Intro Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of S41 Local Magazine. This month our cover artist challenge was taken on by the amazing Rosana Coll who is the creative mind behind the Chesterfield Arms artwork. Rosana is a local artist who gets her inspiration from simply taking in her surroundings and turning them into works of art. You can find out more in our cover artist interview! We are really trying to get out and about more over the summer, we want to meet our wonderful community and share our experiences in the magazine. We had the pleasure of attending the Derby Tup opening which was great, fab job! We also popped into Jaceys to meet owners Becky and Steve. This is my new favourite micro pub! We sat chatting to the locals for hours and even got in a game of Jenga! This month's local hero was a corker! It's the one and only Finley Wake, Fin was an absolute superstar and you can see his feature later on in the magazine. A huge thank you to our local businesses that got involved in donating gifts! We hope you enjoy our Summer edition as much as we enjoyed writing it. Peace, Love and Positivity Simon and Bekah. T: 07538 268761 E: bekah@s41local.com

Crooked Spire Cafe. Perth. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Crooked Spire Cafe, Perth
When Chesterfield resident Jonathan Strutt emigrated to Australia over ten years ago, he thought he may never set eyes on the Crooked Spire again! So, imagine his surprise, when strolling through Perth he spotted the 'Crooked Spire Cafe'. Jonathan is Simon's cousin (S41 Local Editor) and messaged him the same day to say 'hey, have I got a story for you'. Simon got in touch with the cafe's owner Mike Matich to find out more... that's Mike and some of his team on the far left.
Do you know the history of the Crooked Spire?
How did you hear about the Crooked Spire?
You have some great art on the walls, have you any Chesterfield based artists on display?
When we were getting ready to start building the cafe, in March 2015, a good friend of mine was travelling through Chesterfield and posted this amazing picture of the Crooked Spire. I commented that the name would be perfect for a pub, he replied “or maybe a coffee house”. And that’s how it happened:) I also loved the idea that due to a series of mistakes there is now a building that is a beautiful piece of art. I love the idea that we are all artists and out of a mess can come something beautiful. Do you have any artwork of the Crooked Spire on display? If not, I am sure we could send you some? We have a poster with a picture of the spire with a story of its origin. Have you ever had anyone in from Chesterfield, before my cousin? I’ve had a few and they love the story and the reminder of home. We get called the Crooked Squire and the Crooked Spider too, which always gives me a smile. The café looks pretty cool on the website, what can we expect if we were to pay you a visit? It really has a community vibe; we want everyone to feel not just welcome but like it is their place too. Where everyone is included. You can also expect brilliant coffee and food. We were lucky enough to receive two awards last year, Customer Service of the Year Award and Small Business Of the Year in the Chamber of Commerce Awards. Please Mention S41 Local
I believe I do. (ED: For those that don't, the most reliable story is that the black death killed off so many skilled workers that when the spire was constructed, the carpenters were unskilled and used untreated timbers, which twisted and warped as they dried out... it definitely wasn't the result of the spire bending down to take a look when a virgin got married in the church!)
No Chesterfield artists but I am open to them. We also have some well used Chesterfield couches as a nod to the home of the original Crooked Spire. Have you ever been to Chesterfield and visited the Crooked Spire? The real one, in Chesterfield, obviously! I have never been, but it is on my bucket list now. We have what seems like hundreds of kids at the moment (five, to be precise), with our youngest only three and travel can be be a bit hard. But I’m definitely looking forward to a visit soon. If you are ever in Perth and fancy calling in for a coffee, the Crooked Spire Coffee & Art House can be found at the address below. Crooked Spire Coffee & Art House 71 Victoria St Midland WA 6056 Australia Look out for Paul and I wearing 'Crooked Spire Cafe' T Shirts at some point soon, thanks to the team at Perth. Charity What's On
Frocktails
Pump & Grind's charity night with a difference Words & images: Bekah Anstey I headed down to Pump & Grind this month to support the team in raising funds for the wonderful Mind Charity. They held an event called Frocktails that involved an evening of fun, fashion and cocktails. They had some amazing cocktails on offer called Emmeline, Sink the pink and Apples & Pears - £1.00 from every cocktail went to Mind. My favourite had to be Sink the Pink – filled with pink gin, raspberry, lemon, cranberry and sherbet it was perfect for that momentary heat wave we had! I got to meet some great local businesses, one of which was called Salteria. Beth is the owner and she had some wonderful little bags and accessories available – great birthday gifts or just a little treat for a loved one! Beth Salt set up her business back in 2017 after studying Art at Leeds and travelling around Australia (lucky lady), she’s been inspired by sea-life and botanicals which is clear in her designs, she’s simply a lovely local lady trying to turn her passion into a business. You can find her wonderful creations at Bloom Beauty in Chesterfield (pop in and have a manicure with Emma while you’re there), Studio 1 in Hasland. I also got to meet Laura Karin – fashion stylist and blogger who had some top tips and bargains on offer from new branded clothing, vintage pieces and lots of glitter! Laura had this to say: ‘this event is very important to me as it’s close to my heart, I would love to raise some funds for Mind but it’s also about raising awareness for the charity. There’s a stigma around mental health and by running these events we can help to change that’ For further information on Salteria and Laura Karin head over to: Salteria – www.salteria.com Laura Karin – www.laurakarin.couk

In a world where brands become so well known, it’s not uncommon for the brand to replace ‘the Offer applies carpetsactually over £11.99M². T&C’s apply. thing’. AVAILABLE HooverNOW for instance, we toare vacuuming, but the brand has become ‘the thing’. *
“It’s like that here for me,” says Kevin Howarth, of Ideal Carpets on Chatsworth Road. “Certain flooring brands have become so large they dominate when actually there are some great alternatives. Project Floors, for example, provide fantastic Luxury Vinyl Tiles. A German brand, it has the usual high quality we come to expect from Germany, it’s made in Germany and not in China like many of the competitors' products and it really is more than equivalent to some of the more wellknown brands.” Kevin has now been at the 131 Chatsworth Road development for eight years, and set up on his own after a life in carpets and flooring, working for the large retail chains. “I had a wealth of experience and contacts so the transition wasn’t too painful, although what I never expected was how much more time I’d have at home, I used to travel a lot, and how much I’d feel like part of the community.” “You build relationships when your customers are nearly all local. Do a good job and people recommend you to family, to friends and word starts to spread.
Page 20
“It’s also nice to be away from the constant ‘offer syndrome’, where no one ever knows the true price for a product. I keep my prices keen all year round, offer free grippers, door bars and underlay etc on products above a certain price. It keeps things simple.” Kevin has also started offering an uplift service, where, for a small fee, his installers will remove your old flooring and take away all the rubbish before installing your new floor. Kevin is looking forward to a brief respite over August before people start on the prep for Christmas. “September is a busy period as people get their holidays out of the way and start thinking about refreshing things for Christmas and the New Year, get the room decorated and a new floor down.” If you are looking for new flooring there is a wide selection on display in the showroom, including luxury vinyl tiles, hard flooring, laminate, engineered and real wood flooring plus a huge range or carpets… and if you do call in, tell him you saw him in S40 Local! iDeal Carpets 131 Chatsworth Road Chesterfield S40 2AP FB: iDealCarpetsChesterfieldDerbyshire www.chesterfieldcarpets.com

Finley Wake
Finley's road to recovery Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Finley
T
his month’s local hero needs no introduction, he’s basically a legend and can teach us all a thing or two about positivity, resilience and courage and he is only 11 year's old! Finley is a local boy, who, at the start of this year was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Shortly after his diagnosis Finley decided to turn a negative into a positive and started a Facebook group to share his journey to recovery with the world. There’s lots of informative videos that I can imagine other children at the start of Finley’s journey will find comfort, hope and encouragement in. Finley talks openly about his experiences and manages expectations, whether it’s information on what chemo is really like or what happens when you’re having a bone marrow transplant. Finley talks you through the journey in such a way that it isn’t a problem and you just ‘get on with it’. We’re up to Day 106 with his journey and each day brings joy and determination to us all. There’s never a down day, even when he’s tired and groggy, Finley always has a smile on his face and greets us all with that wonderful ‘Hi guys’. I have sat and watched Finley’s videos and he’s becoming a pro in front of the camera! I’m just waiting for him to start his own YouTube channel! (no slime involved though Finley please, we’re all slimed out). It’s clear to see that Finley has a great support network, his family can often be heard in the background of his live feeds and we’ve seen many friends join Finley in his videos - shout out to to his class mates at Abercrombie along with Annabelle, Lexi, Jacob, Loretta, Coral, Pearl, Lailah, Autumn, Brooklyn and not forgetting his little brother Charlie and cute cousin Ava.
Page 22
I particularly loved watching the drinking water challenge recently! I’m sure Finley would agree that his happiness and positivity are instilled by Mum, Dad and brother Charlie. What an amazing job mum and dad are doing with their beautiful boys! Finley you are a true inspiration to not only the younger generation, but to us all. I am privileged to share your journey with you and humbled by your spirit. I would like to say a huge thank you to the following local businesses for donating some lovely gifts to Finley:
Unit 1 Martial Arts donated a month’s free training classes, thank you Dave Cartawick JJ’s Florist donated a beautiful bouquet for mum and dad, Thank you Jessica Hodgson Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club donated a tennis party with goody bags in association with Disability Tennis. Thank you Coaches Andy and Charlie. You’ll see us getting stuck in with this so keep a look out on our Facebook page! Galaxy Travel donated a luxury limo for the family to take them to the Marvel Show in Sheffield that we surprised Finley with. Thank you Dave Lewis.
What an amazing group of local, independent businesses and a great example of social action. Thank you one and all.

Cover Artist
Rosana Coll Want-trepeneur
Words: Simon Paterson Images: Rosana Coll
Meet the hugely talented local artist and mum of three, Rosana Coll.
So, what was your creative process for designing the front cover?
Have you always wanted to be an artist?
Rosana: First I asked Bekah (S41 Editor) what she had in mind and then I headed off into town for some inspiration with a camera and a sketchbook. I sat on a bench near the market, had a few chats with some people about town. What did strike me was the number of empty shops in the town centre. Predominantly left by large chain stores. I then noticed that keeping the town alive are old and new independent, local businesses and at the heart of it is the market and I wanted to reflect that in the image.
Rosana: I have always loved art and had an urge to create things from a very young age. I am in my element when I am covered in muck, splashing paints around. Prior to being a self-employed artist, did you do any other jobs? Rosana: I’ve had mainly office jobs but found myself doodling a lot! I may have been told off a couple of times for doodling. Prior to this though I went to Chesterfield College and studied art and design, then I went on to Manchester Uni, but at the time I was a little bit more into my social life than my studies and left before I finished the course. Weren’t we all at that age… Manchester is a good uni, so you must have been pretty talented from a young age? Rosana: I hope but I wouldn’t like to say so… So, you contacted us to take on our cover artist challenge. I take it you read our magazine. Rossana: Well, I went in to get a tyre fixed at John’s tyre’s… Quick plug there for John’s tyre’s, that’s where I go as well. Rosana: Haha, S41 magazine was sat in the waiting room, the one with the front cover that Brenden Jones did (Issue 6 – June, mega!) which made me pick it up. I saw inside that there is a competition to design your front cover art. I decided to get in touch and here we are. I recognised Brenden’s work as we know each other from hanging round in similar social circles years ago and we follow each other’s work on Instagram. I hope he doesn’t mind me entering the competition. Brenden’s a pretty chilled guy, I can’t see him getting upset with anyone really…His front cover is amazing. Page 24
I agree. What we are seeing is a rise in locally owned businesses entering the town centre, providing either services or experiences, which is great. Rosana: I think they make the town more diverse and interesting. Coffee shops don’t seem to be struggling though. Two jobs and two kids, coffee is the only thing getting me through the day right now! So, you mentioned you have multiple children, how do you find the time to be creative? Rosana: I don’t have a TV, well technically I do, but don’t have any channels. If I have any free time, which can be rare, I’m pretty much sat drawing and painting. I do watch the occasional documentary and YouTube video I must admit. I have a great family around me, my mum and dad help with the kids, which frees me up a little. Well, they say it takes a village to raise a child! I don’t know what we’d do without the grandparents, aunties and uncles etc…. How many kids do you have? Rosana: I have three children; Elanor, Mia and Lucas. Elanor is the oldest at eleven. She attends a SEN school in Shirebrook who are fantastic with her as she has additional needs. I can’t really work a 9 to 5 at present as I need my hours to be flexible for my family. I’m just getting my portfolio together. At the moment I am a ‘want-trepreneur’.
www.s41local.com
Want-trepreneur, brilliant! Once you have a full portfolio, West Studios has artists exhibiting their work regularly. Rosana: I know West Studios quite well. I go to John King’s (artist based at West Studios) life drawing class and he’s given me lots of fantastic advice about my work along the way. I know Helen as well (Helen Rowan photography), she’s also been lovely and very supportive. So, who are your influences in the art world? Rosana: I like a lot of fine art. As opposed to rubbish art, no one wants that! Rosana: Haha! Well It’s subjective, so who’s to say what’s rubbish? I just like the idea that mark making can evoke feelings in people. I love Maggi Hambling’s work. I love illustration too though. As a kid I was a bit of a book worm. Some illustrations add magic to children’s books. I had a massive Roald Dahl phase where I read every book he’d ever written and the illustrations by Quentin Blake are just like childhood in ink. Please Mention S41 Local
What’s next for Rosana then? Rosana: In September I am doing two murals. One in Pilsley Primary School and one in Cavendish Junior School. I’m also doing an album cover for LeftyChris, a fantastic local songwriter and musician. I’m working towards hopefully doing my own small exhibition of the faces I’ve been painting which has been an ongoing project of mine for the past year. I’ve also just agreed to do an illustration for one of Mark Gwynne Jones’s poems. He’s a performance poet and his work is brilliant! I look forward to seeing them, Thanks for your amazing front cover and time Rosana: Thanks for having me. CollRosana Rosana Coll

Wellbeing
The Benefits of Yoga
Five years ago, whilst moving to a new house, I ‘put me back out’ incorrectly lifting a wardrobe out of the back of a van on my own! If only I'd paid attention during the manual handling course at work! At the time, I felt like I would never walk without pain again, let alone play competitive sport - I use the word 'competitive' lightly as I am now over 40! A friend of mine mentioned they did a similar thing some time ago and after practicing yoga they are, pretty much, as good as new. I took their advice and, childcare permitting, I can once again compete at sport. So, what is yoga and why should you do it?
Words: Simon Paterson
Yoga originated in India around 5,000 years ago. Over the years it has been adapted to suit all ages and levels of physicality, and is commonplace in leisure centres, schools, hospitals, community centres and homes around the world. But what is it and why is it so good for you? Yoga is a form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. It comprises of a series of movements and holding poses whilst regulating breathing, which naturally instils calm in the mind. There is scientific evidence to suggest that practicing yoga on a regular basis is beneficial for; stress reduction, anxiety levels, inflammation reduction, heart health, quality of life, depression, chronic pain, sleep quality, flexibility and balance, migraines, breathing, strength and eating habits. The list is endless! You can start yoga at any age, and if you went to a club you would see classes being run with primary school students to pensioners in their 70s and beyond! There are yoga classes for every age and group. You don’t have to be fit or flexible to take up yoga, and some classes are chairbased! Yoga has had a huge impact on my quality of life. I recommend you find the time to practice yoga just a few times a week and it may be enough to make a positive difference to your mental and physical health - it definitely has mine. PS: The picture is not me!

Music
Chesterfield Rocks
The County Music Bar gig in support of Musicians Against Homelessness. Words: Simon Paterson
I popped into The County Music Bar in Chesterfield to find out what Phil, the new owner, had been up to with the venue and to catch up about some events. I was greeted by the legendary Hendrix the dog; he looks a bit like a wolf. (I wasn’t scared at all.) The place looks fantastic - with some tweaks and the addition of a stage it’s a great music venue for up-and-coming bands. The artwork is amazing, and the feel of the bar is very cool! The County Music Bar have lots of great events coming up but there was one event that really intrigued us. I was lucky enough to meet with the event organiser, Louise, and she told us all about what she has in store and the charity she represents. "The Musicians Against Homelessness charity is a nationwide charity which directs funds into Crisis, aiding many homeless people to gain the tools to get back into work and tackling the problem at an MP level. The charity founder is a lady called Emma Rule and the patron is Alan McGee." The founder, Emma, arranges some major events with bands such as Cast, Dodgy and The Happy Mondays, but is keen for people to get involved in the local area. Emma and her team are aiming to bring the events to local communities and get Derbyshire’s up-and-coming bands on board. Louise is the driving force behind the Chesterfield events and volunteers her time on top of her busy workload as a Project Manager. "I am very lucky that The County Music Bar is helping the charity by providing a free venue. We have some great bands such as The Rooves, Alpaca Factory and Marvin’s Revenge. I really want to help get this charity on the map in Chesterfield as well as getting young talent interested in playing. The event not only supports the charity but also brings the community together to support some local talent." Musicians Against Homelessness takes place on the 28th September at 12pm, and is one not to be missed! At only a fiver on the door, it’s a bargain! The event has bands playing throughout the day, some great beers on tap and the epic Pizza Pi will be on site to cater to your hunger needs. Dan Malloy
I'll just 'take the seven' Words: Jennie Sim Images: Dan Malloy & CHG
T
his month we catch up with Take The Seven front Man and Chesterfield Hockey Club striker Dan Malloy. How old were you when you started playing Hockey? Dan: Roughly 5 or 6, my earliest memory is the day before my first ever mini hockey session. My dad was playing against Beeston and after the game we played in a lacrosse goal. How did you get into Hockey? Dan: My dad, he started playing in University and started taking me to his games when I was really young, and I just started playing. Biggest achievement to date in your Hockey career? Dan: Scoring on my first team debut is up there! I think being selected for Derbyshire and winning the County Championships was the best achievement for me personally. The chesterfield 1st XI have now had two back to back promotions finishing 2nd both times, we need to win the league this year for 3 promotions on the bounce and that will be insane. What top tip would you give to any young person looking to take up Hockey? Dan: The hockey community has given me so many opportunities like playing for Chesterfield or for Sheffield University when I studied there. Enjoy your hockey, don’t get down about a bad session or a bad game, learn from it, get stronger, move forward.
Page 32
www.s41local.com
You have won the final ... where do you go for a slapup meal to celebrate? Dan: Gulab. The first team and pretty much the rest of the club have our team meals in there. Christmas - Gulab, End of Season - Gulab. It’s tradition, wouldn’t go anywhere else with the Hockey team. You are also in a band called Take The Seven where did the name come from? Dan: Mini golf. We went to Skegness early on in the band forming and we were generally not very good and the max shots you’re apparently allowed is 7. Majority of the time we spent our time taking a rubbish shot and just saying “I’ll take the seven”. Did you have singing lessons or are you selftaught? Dan: I suppose I’m selftaught. I’ve got a pretty big Irish family so most of my childhood was spent singing Irish folk songs with all my family. My dad and aunt were always the first to sing and generally the better singers, so I suppose it came naturally! If you could duet with anyone who would it be? Dan: That’s tough. Living, I would probably say Tom Waits, that guys voice is phenomenal, so much hurt, I’d love to write lyrics with him more than anything. Dead, there’s plenty; David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Aretha Franklin, Chris Cornell are the first names to spring to mind, but I’d have to say Ray Charles in that category, again, to write with him would be insane.
Where would you take them for a pint afterwards? Dan: Chandlers, It’s my go to bar in Chesterfield. Cocktails are really good and the staff are great people. I could see Tom Waits maybe wanting a pint so I might take him to the County Music bar! Where has been your favourite local gig to date? Dan: Oh, that’s not easy to answer at all, we played a show at Real Time Music with Ovacast and Escape Plan recently, it was a sellout and probably the best this year. The County Bar is probably my favourite venue, we always seem to have a great show there. Halloween last year was pretty special!
Talking of dates where would you recommend to anyone looking to take their partners out for a romantic meal? Dan: My favourite restaurant in town is Lombardi’s. I go with my Fiancé Ellice all the time! The food is exceptional with service to match. I highly recommend the Lamb, oh my…. the lamb.
Training sessions for Chesterfield Hockey Club start again on the 6th September see the website for further details.

Simon Paterson Strangers!
Words & images: Simon Paterson
T
he big news is; I’m now mates with Frank Turner! Well, mates is a bold claim, but he is aware of my existence! But who is Frank Turner I hear you say? Frank Turner is a poet with a guitar, is the voice of my generation and his last album went in at number two, no less! He has been my musical hero for over ten years and I even have one of his album covers tattooed on my forearm! So, how did you meet him I hear you say? (You lot ask a lot of questions). Bekah’s dad is an agent (not FBI, although that would be very cool) in the music business. He had an act on at the ‘Folk by the Oak’ Festival which Frank was headlining. As Bekah’s dad is a bit of a legend, he got us all artist pass wrist bands meaning we got to hang with all the performers for the day, including Frank! Florie was far cooler about this than I was, and Frank seemed impressed to have his photo taken with her! We all loved it, especially Eva as we pulled her around in a trolley for the day!
Because the pub is small, micro to be exact, you can’t help but talk to the strangers next to you. Now, the best thing about talking to strangers, is that they are no longer strangers anymore! We had the best evening chatting to a couple who met in Australia and playing Jenga (shout out to Adam and Steff). I’m sure our paths will cross again, in the meantime you best work on those Jenga skills! We have done so much this month including a walk to raise awareness and funds to fight cystic fibrosis with Dave Brough and his family, who raised over £300. A big well done to everyone involved, thank you for the invite. To Chesterfield Pride, celebrating our differences which in turn brings unity! Here’s to strangers becoming friends. Peace, love and positivity Simon
Bekah and I went to the grand opening of the Derby Tup and met the new owner Rob and his team. I remember Rob from my teenage years as the lead guitarist in a band which was fronted by the late and great Mark Peabody (take it easy up there matey). The place was buzzing, the beer was excellent and we were gutted to leave just before the rhythm and blues band started! We will be back very soon and wish you all a prosperous adventure. After leaving the Derby Tup we went to check out the Micro pub (Jacey’s) just up the road and got chatting to the owners Steve and Bex. Steve and Bex were lovely and have asked us to mention the fundraiser they are doing for the children of the late Laura Norris. Sadly, Laura passed away and has left four young children behind. Steve and Bex are doing a raffle with some great prizes on offer for a very worthy cause. Please check out their Facebook page for further info. Jaceys Micropub Page 34

hat a busy month July has been, I’ve covered lots of fantastic events and met some inspiring local businesses. A lovely local business that stand out is Salteria and the fab Beth, a genuinely nice lady that I could have easily sat and chatted to for hours. Go check them out in my Pump & Grind review! The highlight for this month is getting asked to be a bridesmaid at Simons cousin Becky’s wedding next year, you’re never too old to be a bridesmaid, right? I’m very excited to start wedding dress shopping and getting into ‘say yes to the dress’ mode. The champagne will help too obviously… I’ve also celebrated my best friends 40th! I’ve known Rachelle for over 20 years, and she hasn’t changed a bit! It was lovely to spend time with her family and we got to go and see The Bodyguard in Nottingham which was fantastic! Happy 40th Year Rach! We had Eva’s sports day this month that lasted 2 hours (yes 2 hours), Eva is in the juniors now and they take sports day very seriously. In total there was over 30 different races and I think Eva was in 3. It’s a good job I took a blanket to get comfy! She did very well and we’re looking forward to her starting some athletics training very soon. It's festival season! We went to Folk by the Oak this year with the family, it was amazing! The girls loved it and Simon was in his element as a superfan! The weather was perfect, music was epic and it was just a fantastic family day out. They had lots of activities for the little ones which made the day zero stress! I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a family friendly festival. We’ve made it to edition seven which I am genuinely proud of, it’s such hard work trying to juggle it on top of work and the children but worth it when we get to do our local hero surprises and give something back to the community. We’ve received some lovely feedback lately which really does drive us so keep it coming! Thanks for reading! Bekah

Interview tips

ou’ve got a big job interview coming up. This could be it! Your one shot at the perfect job. Then the nerves kick in.
Unfortunately, that pre-interview anxiety can really sabotage your performance on the big day. A bad case of nerves can lead to serious interview mistakes including blanking out, blurting, babbling, sweating, and fidgeting. Employers are aware that some candidates are more nervous than others at interview and make allowances for that. But how can you beat those interview nerves? Check out our top 10 tips!
Be Prepared Role play your interview! Grab a friend or a family member and have them play the part of the interviewer. If you’re interviewing with a company and you already have a friend that works there, even better! Ask them to run you through what they went through. Then ask them if they have any advice for you and what you can do to make yourself really shine and don't foget to research the company! Page 38
Do a dummy run Take the hassle of not quite knowing where the company is, or if you can park by popping over beforehand. That way you can plan your journey, identify traffic hot spots and know if you’ll need any loose change for parking.
Exercise before the interview Another great way to relax is through exercise. Not only does doing exercise give you a mental edge that will help you stay on top of all of the details needed for your interview, but it also releases endorphins in your system that will naturally help calm you down.
Arrive early Always arrive early! Being late will add un-necessary stress and pressure on top of your interview nerves. 5-10 minutes early is great, any earlier can place unnecessary pressure on your interviewer

Briefly review your notes
Accentuate the Positive
You should be doing research, preparing, and rehearsing. But if you made any notes for yourself, this is a good time to briefly look them over to refresh on any points that you really want to get across.
Once you have prepared, tell yourself you are ready. Listen to upbeat music, songs that energise you and make you feel good about yourself and the world in general! In the interview itself focus on your positives, what are your ‘best bits’ and why do you stand out? If you plan this beforehand its easier than having to think on the spot.
Be open about nervousness At the beginning or during the interview or if you start to stumble on a question, it’s ok to say something like, “I apologise, I’m extremely nervous. This is my first interview” or “It’s been quite some time that I’ve been in this position.” This will only make you appear more human and the interviewer may just be able to relate to you more. Who knows, the interviewer may even be just be as nervous as you are!
Find some common ground & be yourself Finding common ground with the interviewer will put you at ease and take your mind off the pressure of the interview. Whether it be a shared interest, hobby, holiday destination or previous workplace it gives you something to discuss outside of the ‘formal’ interview. But how can you find that out? LinkedIn is a great place to start. Previous education, employment and interests are all on there. Outside of that other ways are if you know anyone that works there – they can give you an insight on the person. Or, in the conversation itself things may naturally get spoken about which will give you an opportunity to discuss yourself from more of a personal level.
Watch your pace, posture and tone of voice Nerves tend to make us speed up. Be aware of that and take time to breathe and watch your pace. Take the time you need to answer the questions honestly and fully. If you have a mental blank there’s nothing wrong with asking to come back to that question to buy yourself more time. Garden Tips
Summer Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
• Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted, they usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them, but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. • Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. • Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over, and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. • Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. • If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. • Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. • Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. • Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... • Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.
