website, social media, cartoons (a special thanks to Kelly Sheldon at 13 Bends Design for this edition's celebratory cover, thanks Kel). It's not a huge team, but whether it's an hour you put in or a day, thanks to each of you.
Hi and welcome to the April edition of S40 Local.
This one is a bit special, as it marks the tenth anniversary of S40 Local.
Simon Paterson, my equivalent at newly launched S41 Local, has taken time to interview me, and I hope you think it makes an interesting read. I certainly never imagined I'd be celebrating my ten year anniversary when I started laying out the first edition.
Next up it's the delivery guys. Whatever the weather you've been out and made sure S40 Local gets to all the people it should. Some of you have been doing so almost since I started and you've been fab. Thanks.
It's been an interesting journey and the greatest part has been meeting so many people. Without all those who've advertised with us there would be no S40 Local, a huge thanks to every one of you.
Next my family. I work on S40 Local at the studio at West Studios and quite a lot at home. It can be late nights and I know I can be a bit grumpy, but they're brill. They help me with ideas, writing, website and in so many ways. Another huge thanks.
There are the people who contribute, send in pictures, what's on events, items for sale, interesting stories or articles, news snippets - there are so many ways in which people connect with us and again, thanks to you all.
I'm hoping I haven't missed anyone out - I usually do and it's completely unintentional. And lastly thanks to you, the reader. Without you, we'd be nothing. Here's to April 2029 and our twentieth year.
There's the people who help with producing S40 Local, layout, advert design, proofreading, finances, writing, the

It’s not just for Comic Relief! Kilimanjaro. Words & Images: Denise Glover
D
enise Glover is a GP who mainly sits at her desk and has never done any long-distance hill walking but in July 2018, she decided to climb a mountain, Kilimanjaro. Below Denise shares her story with us.
I read a story about John Goddard who, in 1940 at the age of 15, made a list of 127 things he wanted to achieve in his lifetime. Climbing Kilimanjaro was on his list. After hearing about his story, I thought that climbing Kilimanjaro was something I could do despite the fact that I had never hiked or camped outdoors before. I would literally be starting from ‘the sofa to Kilimanjaro’ and I reasoned that, since it required no ‘technical skills’ to climb, I would be able to reach the summit.
"There’s a lot if information about Kilimanjaro online. I discovered that it was a dormant volcano in Tanzania with 3 volcanic cones 'Kibo', 'Mawenzi' and 'Shira'. It’s the highest mountain in Africa with a height of 5,895 metres above sea level, for comparison Mount Everest is 8,850 metres above sea level. It’s the highest free-standing mountain in the world as it’s not part of a mountain range and is one of the seven summits. Because Mount Kilimanjaro is such a large geographical structure it creates its own weather, which ranges from hot to bitterly cold. It’s said that climbing it is like travelling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of days. Approximately 30,000 climbers and 80,000 porters hike up each year and approximately 10 deaths are reported each year (some say it could be two to three times higher). The main cause of death is altitude sickness, which I was really worried about. Page 6
www.s40local.co.uk

Page 7
People The weather system on Kilimanjaro varies depending on what month you travel. January to March are the warmest months, March to June is the rainy season so not recommended for inexperienced climbers, June to October it is colder and November to December sees a short rainy season. I decided to climb in January due to the comparative warmth over other months. When hiking up Kilimanjaro you pass through 5 different climate zones; Cultivation - 800 to 1800m Rainforest - 1800 to 2800m Heather/Moorland - 2800 to 4000m Alpine Desert - 4000 to 5000m Arctic - 5000m plus
There are seven established routes up Mount Kilimanjaro - Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain (Mweka is only used for descents). Success in reaching the summit depends on the route and the number of days it takes to acclimatize. I chose the eight day Lemosho Route, this includes the first night in a hotel. The Lemosho
Page 8
route is described as the more scenic route with a high success rate, I chose a private trek because I thought it would be tailored to my needs. A private trek includes a guide and seven porters to carry your equipment needed for the trek. Preparation: I walked locally around Curbar Edge and part of the Monsal Trail. I climbed Mam Tor a few times and Thorpe cloud once. Three months before I climbed, I used two different personal trainers who devised an exercise program for the climb and I also used the dreaded step machine!
Equipment: I became a regular at the local hiking shops, learned about layering and merino wool socks, looked at several down jackets and got myself a camelback water system with an insulated tube – useful when things get cold. Hiking boots, four seasons sleeping bag, snack and water purification tablets, baby wipes, and an alcohol gel was essential… you need quite a bit of stuff! The Trip: I arrived in Moshi, Tanzania on Saturday 5 January 2019 after flying with KLM from Manchester, one of the airlines that land at Kilimanjaro airport.
I was picked up by a transfer vehicle and met the manager of the company I was going to use to
www.s40local.co.uk
climb. The next day I met my guide Jonas and was also introduced to a lady who was looking to climb up Kilimanjaro without a group. After meeting we agreed she’d join my group with her own guide plus her porters, between us, a total of 14 people on our trek. We carried a basic rucksack with up to four litres of water, rain gear and a snack whilst the porters carried all the food and equipment (tent, sleeping bags etc) that we required while on the mountain. We also paid for a portable toilet to be carried and used at the camp sites! Each porter is allowed to carry 15kg up the mountain including our items, at every gate items are weighed to make sure they are within the weight limit. We had to register our name in a book at every campsite
The food was better than I thought, fruit, eggs and pasta, beef and chicken, as we climbed higher the altitude reduced our appetite.
The ascent started on day one which surprised me, we continued to climb until we summited, walking between four to eight hours in a day. ‘Pole, pole, slowly, slow’ they would say. If you walked too fast you could not breathe very well and had to rest to catch your breath.
We walked high to acclimatise but then returned to a lower level each day to sleep.
The biggest challenge was ‘The Barranco’. It rose over 830 feet above the Barranco valley and was quite a challenging, we had to use all four limbs at times.
Summit night was a challenge. It was very cold, and we started the climb at midnight on the 12 January, taking 10 and half hours to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro on the 13 January 2019. Then another four hours to descend to base camp. My water froze, the air was thin, and I was very tired. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and I would do it again but not in the near future!
I raised money for the following charities below, should you feel like adding to the total please visit the link: • • •

Everyone
has questions This is your opportunity to explore the meaning of life
Exploring is good. We’re built for it. Explore more about life, faith and meaning with Alpha. Alpha is a series of sessions over ten weeks that give people a great opportunity to explore what Christians believe in a relaxed, informal setting. We look at key themes of Christian faith, such as who Jesus is, why he died on the Cross, what faith is and why it’s important. We also explore those dimensions of Christian faith that connect directly with our personal experiences of life, such as suffering, money and possessions, sin, temptation and addictions, and thinking about how we can make the most of our lives. St John’s runs Alpha every year and all who come find it enjoyable and stimulating.
This is what one person who came on the last course said: “... a huge thank you for leading Alpha in such an inspirational way. I learnt so much more about my own journey with God and do genuinely feel that the “emptiness” I had been experiencing has indeed been filled …! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and sharing experiences...” Our next Alpha is 7:15pm to 9:15pm for ten Tuesdays starting 30th April Meet new people, enjoy a meal, ask your questions and share your views as we explore the meaning of life. Time for bubbly. Paul Chapman celebrates 10 years of S40 Local. Interview by Simon Paterson (S41 Local) Image: Hannah Blueish Illustration
S40 Local is ten years old this month so to reflect on the past 101 editions I turned to Simon Paterson from sister magazine S41 Local to interview me. What follows is that conversion. Did you always want to work in media, and if not, what was your dream job when you were growing up? Well, I suppose there are three answers to this. At one point, I wanted to drive an articulated truck around Europe, although it would have to be a Peterbilt. I then wanted to be the guy that changes the wheels on a Formula 1 car, and both of those things led me to want to work in vehicle design. I’ve always had a love of design and spent far too much of my time doodling cars when I should have been looking at the blackboard! What was the most valuable lesson you learned, from the worst job you ever had, and what was that job? I don’t think I have ever had any bad jobs. Well it’s alright for some!
"I have a job to do and one that I'm lucky to say, I enjoy. Businesses trust me with their adverts and have faith in me that when they advertise with us, they will see a return, which they do." Biggest lesson was when I was working in WH Smiths and I stopped a lad I thought had been stealing. Fortunately, he hadn’t nicked anything, and I had falsely accused him, but it was the 80’s and people just shrugged and walked away! Nice work mate. Why did you decide to create and produce a community magazine? I worked in IT for over 22 years, taking redundancy in 2006, and kind of fell into painting and decorating. Then in 2009, we had a recession. My diary had always been full for around 6-8 weeks. The recession hit, people stopped spending money Page 22
and I was down to just a two-week list of work - I thought, I need to advertise. At the time, I looked around at the publications available and there were two choices, neither of which I felt was right for me. I had seen other A5 publications in other cities which looked great. Nicola (Ed: Paul's wife) also commented “we need one of those A5 magazines like my mum gets in Leeds!" So, that was it, I opened the laptop up and fired up publisher. I started pressing some buttons to see if I could make it work and it did, eventually! You obviously had many transferable skills from working in IT. Yes, I spent a lot of time on spreadsheets, creating and designing Powerpoint presentations. Sticking a magazine together just seemed…sensible! I would say that ‘what I do now feels right for me’, where as perhaps the old jobs just weren’t quite me. So, you found your calling? Yes, I work in design. Ok, I’m not designing cars, but when I put Autoselect’s advert together, I am looking at his stock and thinking, I’ll take the Porsche GT3 and the Focus RS for nipping to the shops and back. We can all dream! What's been your greatest challenge to date, other than working with me? Probably having confidence to walk into a business and say, "Hello, I’m Paul Chapman, a local painter and decorator. I am setting up a local A5 magazine which I am hoping to deliver for free to the local area, would you like to buy an advert from me?" I struggled with that because I expected to be chucked out on my ear by every business. On the first day, Robert and Phil in Newbold Bedrooms offered me coffee. I then went around the corner to Nonsolovino and was offered a glass of wine. I had a chat with both companies, and both later became advertisers and supporters of S40 Local. I was amazed at just how well received and how open they were to my ideas. It was Libby who said to me "you weren’t doing it because you wanted to sell adverts, you were doing it because you wanted to advertise your business, that was the difference."
www.s40local.co.uk
Business So, your biggest challenge was having the confidence to walk in to a business and say, 'I’m Paul Chapman, please buy into me and my magazine.' Exactly, because I didn’t have a product, I could actually show people at this point! I remember the first day of phone calls. My wife and I created a list of businesses to call, and the first business she phoned up had a full-page advert! That was a major breakthrough. This early win and the way I was received by the businesses gave me confidence to go for it. Today, I am so proud to say we do not have a sales team and don't make any sales calls whatsoever! People come to us because they love the magazine and they know it works for other businesses. I am sure if I said that to other people, they wouldn’t believe me! Because what you have done is create a desirable product that markets itself, so you don’t need to sell. Not an easy thing to do by any means! At what point did you think, yes, I can do this, this is going to work? The first two editions didn’t make any money but covered the print costs. The cost was my time, but quickly the magazine became profitable, I was able reduce my time painting and spend more time on the magazine. Eventually, I was able to make the switch to full-time publisher. Being self employed allows me flexibilty with my working hours. This is important to me, as I have a young family and want to spend as much time with them as possible. What is the one skill you wished you learned before becoming an editor? Photoshop! What would you say you need to be better at? I'm really bad at sharing the feedback we get, so much positive feedback comes in, you wouldn’t believe. It’s hard to get my head around how many people read the magazine and how it influences readers. And I hope it encourages them to buy products and services locally and keep money in the immediate economy. After 10 years in print how do you stay motivated, what gets you out of bed in a morning and you can’t say your kids? My alarm? I have a job to do and one that I'm lucky to say, I enjoy. Businesses trust me with their adverts and have faith in me that when they advertise with us, they will see a return, which they do. Before I started S40 Local my ideal job was one where I could go to work in a t-shirt and shorts, and I am very much there now! Page 24
What has been your greatest achievement to date? It has to be reaching 10 years in business as S40 Local and sharing all the positive stories from our community. I’ve supported over 600 businesses and made some great friends along the way. I was hoping you would say that, it’s kind of why I asked the question! What sets S40 apart from other local publications? Well if I tell you that they will all do it! Fair point mate! No, I feel S40 has a sense of community. Many have said to me that they feel it’s written for them and I think that's a really important thing. I'm part of the community and it matters to me. I also have people around me who believe in the same sense of community. Although we don't have an S40 team as such, there are loads of people involved who help make it work. I have designers, photographers, gardeners, friends who write articles, people suggest things and give me very honest feedback, proof-readers, finance support, deliverers, many do a few hours here and there and help make it work. What does the future hold for S40 and Paul Chapman? Another 10 years would be nice. We've now got S41 Local running and as a collective have some great ideas. S41 Local is due to expand in the next few editions, which will make us one of the largest combined publications in Chesterfield, delivering 17,000 copies! Our ideas are all about supporting local independent business and Chesterfield as a whole. How do you wind down after a long day in the office? I cycle home, well, some of the time anyway, and family time is important. Last question. You can invite four guests to a dinner party, past or present, dead or alive, who do you invite? One has to Valentino Rossi, the Moto GP champion, Julius Caesar perhaps for some leadership tips, Caeser Manrique, the Spanish artist, sculptor, architect and activist from Lanzarote, and last but not least, Ben Elton for a bit of humour!

"Happy 10th Anniversary S40! We have been advertising with Paul for over 5yrs and love his working ethos and commitment to supporting 'local' and the community. S40 is a cracking magazine, wishing you continued success from Penk Insurance."
Penk Insurance, Chatsworth Road "Thanks to people in the s40 local area for supporting doorstep delivery, helping local farmers and local business keeping people like myself in work and helping the local community. 'So get yourself a milk delivery and lets start on our doorstep'"
Mick Barratt (Milkman) "I would like to thank you for the support S40 has given to my business and with out a doubt made a possitive impact, as mentioned on the phone I always knew when the magazine was out as an influx of calls would come through."
Wilma - All the Corners "Wow! I can’t believe S40 is ten years old! You still look so young! Paul, congratulations on reaching this milestone and on producing such a worthy publication – full of useful information, excellent contacts to local business and services, interesting articles and a great support to community groups, organisations and local causes. I remember having a conversation with you when you were planning the very first edition. How time flies when you are having fun! Holymoorside and Walton Arts and Film have appeared in What’s On pages in all the relevant editions ever since – and we have enjoyed contributing to occasional articles. Our partnership with the magazine is much appreciated. Wishing S40 a happy 10th birthday and every success for S41 in 2019."
Ann Grinbergs: Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival Society
"Congratulations Paul on your tenth anniversary edition of S40. As you know we have been advertising with S40 Local every edition, since the early days, edition No. 3 or No. 4, I think. We have had a great deal of success with the advertisements, it has helped raise our business profile in the area and we have received many enquiries from S40 Local readers requiring financial and wealth management advice at critical times of their lives, mainly at Retirement planning and Investment planning, a number of which have become long standing clients who have made referrals to us from their own acquaintances and family. It’s definitely true that people do have desire to deal with local businesses and you have made this much easier for everyone to do just that. It is clear from your own editorial articles you are passionate about the success of people and businesses in the area and this is very much appreciated by all."

Advertorial
Opticians invest in new technology The Specsavers of the future!
S
pecsavers in Chesterfield has just invested £50,000 in 3D scanning technology which allows optometrists to view the eye in more detail than ever before.
The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, which will be available in late April for appointments, is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The results are similar to an ultrasound or MRI scan, in that it creates multiple scan slice images that are built up to form a total image. The OCT machine uses a totally safe, laser light source and not x-ray-type radiation.
The scan will be in addition to a thorough eye test, during which the optometrist will use a range of clinical tests and procedures to measure the quality of someone’s vision, as well as taking an overview of the health and function of their eyes and how they work together. The OCT scan takes just a few seconds and is non-contact and painless. A customer’s OCT images will be stored on file to help note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of overall eye health. OCT scans are additional to the normal eye test and can be requested when the appointment is booked or when the customer arrives in store. The cost of this scan (£10) is in addition to the eye test and not covered by the NHS examination.
Chesterfield’s Optometrist Partner, Allissa Charlesworth comments: "This investment gives our team the ability to enhance the services to the local community by identifying and helping to detect or manage conditions, with a level of diagnostic capability which previously would have needed a hospital visit'. OCT technology produces such a detailed picture of the structures in the eye that it allows us to identify signs of diseases years earlier than traditional methods. An example of this is glaucoma, which our Optometrist team are specially trained to spot. Given that nearly half of all sight loss is preventable*, the sooner we can detect these conditions, the sooner we can help manage them or refer people for treatment."

Win a Bluebell photoshoot with Helen Rowan Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Helen Rowan Photography
Helen Rowan captures emotion, personality and the beauty of children that us amateurs can only dream of.
Our children recently had a photo shoot with Helen who got in touch and gave me with an idea of what they should be wearing to fit in with their surroundings, this was pretty easy to work with. On arrival Helen was wonderful, she made the children feel at ease and talked to them about what she was going to do.
Eva is confident and had no problem in posing for the camera, however this wasn’t what Helen was looking for. She was great at distracting Eva with a finger puppet and talking to her, which resulted in a more natural picture and really put Eva at ease. When it came to taking pictures of an elevenmonth-old it was never going to be easy. Helen knew exactly what she was doing! She was ready to get the shots the second I put Florie on Eva’s lap, the results were amazing! I am so pleased with the images and can’t wait to share them with my family as gifts for birthdays. This absolutely takes the pressure off when gift buying!
Helen is very keen to get the youngsters of today involved in photography and to get Chesterfield’s budding photographers busy, she is running an amazing competition! Open to under 10s, the brief is simple. Take a picture that reflects Spring. We look forward to seeing your entries.

Film
Stand up!
On the set with Kai Undrell Words: Simon Paterson Images: Undrell Films
I
am, or was, a movie buff, so you can imagine my excitement when 18 year old Kai Undrell, local film maker and student at Chesterfield College, called to invite us to the set of his new short film, ‘Stand Up’, for an interview! I arranged to go and see ‘Stand Up’ being filmed at The Avenue night club, where cast members and crew were filming a scene.
Kai gives me a quick overview of the film “The lead character is a troubled, loathsome comedian called Daniel Lawrence. He is making a big return to stand-up comedy
after an emotional breakdown. His manager is somewhat of a tyrant which makes for an interesting dynamic."
The script, by Kai, was initially 92 pages long however, Harry Bracken, the Assistant Director, said “never gonna happen, that’s a one-anda-half-hour feature film with no budget, let’s be realistic here, so Stand-Up will be a 40 minute short film”. "It’s important to have someone keeping things realistic and putting me in my place, we work really well together" said Kai. I was interested to find out more about Kai and the film… Have you always had an interest in film?
“Ever since I can remember, from a very young age, I would watch films repeatedly, it was pretty much my life. Over-time it progressed into a desire to work in the industry in any capacity possible. Surprisingly none of my family have a passion for films so I have always felt a like a bit of an odd ball. My father is into DIY and my mother and sister love the outdoors, I’m good with my movies!” What made you pursue a career in film making?
“Well, I am pretty rubbish at everything else but seem to be OK at this, or so I've been told! It’s the only thing that causes a spark and ignites a passion in me. I get an adrenaline rush from almost every part of the production process. To paraphrase Stanley Kubrick: The scariest feeling in the world is when you are about to walk into the studio for a shoot, and the greatest feeling is releasing a film into the world!” What roadblocks have you faced?
“Still being in college carries the stigma of being a student film maker, and it’s hard to disassociate yourself from that and you can be quite overlooked by the industry, but I believe I am at the fore-front of independent film makers and this will change soon enough. Working independently, you aren’t attached to any major production company so you’re standing on your Page 36
www.s40local.co.uk
own two feet. This has advantages, but can also leave you a little bit stranded, there’s only you to build the life-boat!
“The cast and crew are amazing and work so hard, because they believe that the independent film industry needs to be kept alive. In the modern film industry, there is no middle ground between a huge budget and no budget, you’ve either got it or you haven’t. It has always been very a dog eat dog industry and a thousand good moves can be over shadowed by one bad move, you have to be careful…but nothing ground breaking was ever produced without taking a few risks!” When do you anticipate the film will be released and where can we watch it?
“We can’t release the film until after the round of film festivals where you need your own premier, so it’s difficult to say, but please keep an eye on my YouTube channel Undrell Films and our social media pages as I post any updates there. I have couple of short films in there already, in fact one of them was filmed at West Studios, where your office is!” The team were just packing up after a long day on set, but I managed to accost Steve Dolton, the male lead in the film to ask him a few questions. Steve, what’s it like working with Kai?
“It’s great, he’s young enough not to be cynical!” jokes Steve.
“He is on a creative path and has lots of talent, so I knew this would be interesting to do. Some of the best work I’ve done is with new directors, they’re not inhibited by the constraints of the business. He has his eye on the game and his originality will see him go far.” Which filmmaker has influenced you the most?
Steve: “Dustin Hoffman has been a big influence and of course the Cohen Brothers are magnificent. Local director (Nottingham) Shane Meadows is a favourite but so far, he has managed to miss working with me.”. Kai: “I am obsessed with the horror genre so, Carpenter and Cronenberg have a big influence on me. I also love the way Tarantino constructs his characters and the dialogue he writes, well…”
"We are pitching Stand-Up personally to potential investors (production companies and/or funding bodies) toward the end of this year, with the idea of expanding it into a feature-length film!" Ok so last question: you are having a dinner party and can invite one person each, dead or alive, who do you invite? Steve: “Neil Young what a singer songwriter he is…” Kai: “One million percent David Bowie!”
Simon: Wow neither of you picked an actor or director, maybe you should start careers in music!

Will our science tutor knows how to turn science 'pain and suffering' into pass marks! Will is our amazing GCSE science tutor based at the Chesterfield Kip, but he is so much more than ‘just a science tutor’! When Will first met Jo to discuss science tutoring, she was intrigued by his fascinating CV, as well as his experience as a science teacher. First things first… his confidence and ability as a science tutor has resulted in all of last year’s students getting pass grades at GCSE Science. His students appreciate his ability to explain complex issues; his willingness to drop a lesson plan and pick up a topic requested by them which helps them keep up with school work as well as filling in gaps. His flexibility with the curriculum means his one to one relationship with students is totally tailor-made for their needs. It is no wonder he is so successful.
Will graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in Environmental Science in 2006. However, science remained a passion for him so he studied an additional physics course at Nottingham before qualifying as a science teacher in 2012. He has since attended a residential course at Cambridge University to learn how best to prepare his students for the university application and life there as an undergraduate. When you meet Will, you would never know that this calm, quietly spoken man has a hidden passion for extreme sports including running marathons and extreme obstacle courses such as the scarily named ‘The Pain & Suffering’ in Leicester…
Now you can see where his ‘pain and suffering’ experience comes from! His personal inner strength and determination is applied to all aspects in his life, which is one reason he is such an awesome tutor. But it doesn’t stop there… he is also a qualified Commercial Scuba Diver, Rescue Diver and Dive Master. Teaching diving is a very extreme kind of teaching. The outcomes when things go wrong are much more serious, hence the additional Rescue Diver qualification. It starts to make science tutoring look more like a walk in the park, doesn’t it? But there is more! As if establishing a career as a science teacher wasn’t enough, Will has also qualified as an RFC Rugby Union Referee! His weekends are spent running up and down a pitch keeping 30 strapping rugby players under control, when he isn’t watching the Six Nations and other Rugby championships, of course!!
So if you want to meet this amazing man, (where does Jo find such fascinating tutors from?), then I am afraid you need to know someone who could benefit from his help and support for their Science GCSE and enrol them at Kip in Chesterfield. They can learn from this inspirational role model and pass science GCSE as well. However, you don’t have to be struggling in science to benefit from working with Will, because if you are looking at a future career that requires high science grades he is your man as well! Call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 to get started.

Health
Coping... With anxiety during the menopause. Words & Image: Shelley Chapman
This month I’m talking about anxiety, not a ‘symptom’ you’d necessarily associate with the menopause, or peri-menopause. Peri-menopause is the build-up to your periods totally stopping. It's a time when you can suffer with all sorts of different feelings, both physical and emotional.
The peri-menopausal stage can last from 4-8 years but we’re all different, so please don’t compare yourself to anyone else as we’re all unique. You know your body better than anyone else, so the more you know about this stage, the less scary it will be. It’s important to visit your doctor, just in case anything isn’t menopause related so you can nip it in the bud. I mentioned before, this stage can last for a few years and your hormones will be all over the place during this time, and it’s not easy for doctors to definitely say (normally via a blood test) that things are due to the menopause. I’m going to cover a lot of the most common symptoms in these articles, so that you have an idea what to expect.
Anxiety: You might start waking up with feelings of being overwhelmed, of being tense and worried, or start having disturbed sleep, memory lapses and headaches. This can, for many of us, be totally out of character and some women think they’re going completely mad! If the doctor can’t find anything obvious, it could be down to fluctuating hormones and possibly a drop in your magnesium levels. Magnesium is found naturally in the body and is the fourth most abundant mineral (known as the ‘happy hormone’ – even though it isn’t a hormone) and during the peri-menopause, these levels can drop.
Magnesium is vital to our daily life, heart and arteries, and a lack of it can often be associated with; aches, pains, muscle spasms, poor sleep, eye twitching, fibromyalgia, poor memory and personality and mood changes. Which is why, as I said, the more you know about the possible symptoms of menopause (or peri-menopause), the better it is for you, and especially the loved ones around you. Page 44
What should you avoid? There are things that can interfere with your bodies magnesium levels: • • • • •
Stressful situations Carbonated drinks Refined sugars Anything with caffeine Alcohol - causes a Vitamin D deficiency (which like magnesium, is vital to your body).
What can help? • • • • • •
Relaxation techniques Exercise Eating a healthy diet Avoiding stressful situations Having a good support network around you Supplements - Magnesium with B6 (which aids absorption). The recommended dose is 375mg a day, but cut back if you start getting diarrhoea.
With the supplements, if you get anxious during the day, take it in the morning. If you wake up anxious, take it when you go to bed, or have half the dosage in the morning and the other half in the evening. If you are on ANY medication, please check with your doctor before taking any supplements in case they interfere with it. Please note: High anxiety or panic attacks aren’t a normal part of menopause, so go and see your doctor. See you next month, Shelley x Menopause Help

Coffee with Simon Redding, a trustee from Monkey Park, the community hub on Chester Street. Words: Paul Chapman Images: George Krousti
"Monkey Park has four main offerings: • • • •
Monkey Park Works - a co-working space for businesses to rent from just £25 to £95 a month, Community Cafe - for coffee and cake,
The Hub - where the community engages and innovates through activities, workshops and meetings, creating a 'Better Brampton' ,
Cycle Workshop - for cycle repairs and sales of recycled bikes, for people looking for cheap green transport", explains Simon.
The workspaces, above the cafe on the first floor, are available from £6.50 for a day pass. Monthly membership starts at £25 per month for access one day a week and full membership is £95 a month, for full time use. This gives you: • • • •
A shared workspace without the hassle and expense of a lease, Flexible access from 8am to 6pm (outside these times by arrangement),
A social space, where you can work together or quieter spaces, where you can hide away, Superfast broadband, a secure locker, tea/ coffee and A4/A3 printing and scanning.
There is also a private meeting room available to rent at affordable rates.
"The space enables people to share ideas and come together, which is good for the businesses, the community and the local economy.
Page 46
"If you need a photographer, regular workspace user George can help. Not sure how to build a website, we have members who can help. It's great to see the collaboration between people, and this really supports our ethos, of keeping money local and supporting local people and the economy." "Many of the people using the spaces are young business people who are starting up, here they can get established before moving on. Others use the space rather than sitting in isolation, working from home. A bit of social interaction goes a long way to improving productivity and mental health. "We can provide members with access to a whole range of business support services" adds Simon. "It's about growing, nurturing and supporting talent and creating a hub for change."
"Your money is going to a good cause: the workspace is run by a social enterprise & all profits are used to subsidise the community hub & other community services" finishes Simon.
Check out the website monkeypark.org.uk/works for prices and details of workspace membership email manager@monkeypark.org.uk to arrange a visit... or just call in for a coffee and a slice of cake, you can be sure of a warm welcome, the cafe is open Wed to Sat 10:30am to 4:30pm. Friends of Monkey Park A group of Brampton & Ashgate residents have come together to improve and maintain the Chester Street Park.
The Friends of Monkey Park is a newlyestablished, volunteer run community group facilitated and hosted by Monkey Park Community Hub on Chester Street. The aim is to bring local people together to improve and maintain Chester Street Park (a.k.a. Monkey Park). The main aims of the group are:
• To apply for grant funding and raise funds, to replace the old and dangerous play area with new play equipment • To work with the local council, police and community to reduce key issues such as littering, dog fouling and antisocial behaviour • To arrange events that bring people into the park • To act as guardians of the park
The first meeting of the group took place early March 2019 at Monkey Park Cafe. Local councillors and members of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Green Spaces team attended the event.
Kevin Walker, Director at Monkey Park Community Interest Company (CIC), said: “We welcome everyone to our meetings and are keen to hear from all points of view. We want to create a park that is open and accessible to the whole community and would love to hear your views.” For anyone wishing to get involved with the group, they can be contacted via:
Email: admin@friendsofmonkeypark.org.uk Facebook: facebook.com/ friendsofmonkeypark Twitter: twitter.com/friendsofmonkey
The group are actively seeking donations and raffle prizes to help fund the project. They have a crowdfunding campaign running at: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ friendsofmonkeypark for anyone wishing to donate.

Dirty Fun at Ashover
Brews News
Do you want to have some Muddy fun? If so the third annual HARP 5 Kilometre Mud run is being held at High Ashes Rural Project on the 28 April 2019.
More brew's, awards and changes as Brampton Brewery continue to go go from strength to strength.
The HARP (High Ashes Rural Project HARP) project was establish in 2014, with the aim of helping people with learning disabilities and unemployed people to gain confidence and learn at the same time. It's located closeby, between Chesterfield and Matlock. Jordon Bestwick (far right in the photograph) is a volunteer at Harp explained “last year we had really good fun. The mud run is open to everybody, you don’t have to be super fit to do it. You can run or walk the course, the most important thing is that you have fun”.
In the weeks leading up to HARP Mud run, the group work together to create the course, plan the route, build the obstacles and mark out the final course at Ashover.
Until the end of March entry is just £15 (£20 after) and students and young people are £5. Jordon Bestwick said “we are happy if people want to get sponsored and raise money for their own favourite good cause”. www.eventrac.co.uk/listed-races/mud-run www.highashes.org.uk/events
On the Friday of the week that included International Womens Day, Eve from Brampton Brewery was at Ashover Brewery alongside a boat load of other fabulous women brewers, including Lenton Lane Brewery, Neepsend Brew Co and Welbeck Abbey Brewery to take part in International Women's Collaboration Brew Day.
The group have come together previously to do the same and have produced some fantastic brews. This year is no exception and the beer brewed was a delicious 4.7% abv Dandelion & Burdock Porter which will soon be available in both Cask and Bottle, so watch out for it in any of Brampton Brewery's three pubs - The Rose & Crown, The Tramway Taven and The Glassworks. The Rose & Crown has recently been crowned Chesterfield CAMRA Cider Pub Of The Year, so big congratulations go out to Mat and the team at the Rose. The Tramway Tavern has had an external refurbishment and is now fully complete and it really does look fantastic, we hope you get a chance to check it out very soon.
Above: Students , Carers and Volunteers getting ready for 5k Harp Mud Run. Why not get a group together, friends, work colleagues, family etc and go get extremely muddy whilst having a huge laugh for chairty?
See advert on the What's On Pages for more details on entry to the event. Page 48
A great new outdoor space has been created in the yard behind the pub. Fingers crossed the sun comes out soon so we can call in and enjoy it.
Last but by no means least, The Rose & Crown will be holding its annual St Georges Beer Festival from Thursday 18 April - watch FB for details, rumour has it there is every chance Brampton's fantastic 10th Anniversary Ale 'Bramptxn' will be making a re-appearance! www.s40local.co.uk

From The Catwalk Brookfield Community School Parents and Friends Association held their very first ‘Promfest’ on Thursday 7th February. Words: Rebecca Hudson (Brookfield PFA) Images: RW Photography
Wanting to look their best, students and parents from schools across Chesterfield were invited along to an evening that showcased everything they'd need for their much anticipated Prom nights.
Local businesses were keen to get involved and kindly dedicated their time and expertise to help students with their decisions. Blanc Occasions, Ingmans gents wear and M&S Chesterfield offered an extensive array of dresses, suits, shirts, ties, dickie bows, shoes, handbags and underwear.
Spencer’s Barbers and The Look were on board and created some wonderful hairstyles for our models to take part on the catwalk. The Therapy Lounge and Embellish kindly offered their services and the girls make up was stunning. Tammy Marsh of Nail Candy impressed us with her natural looking spray tan techniques and also showed her bio sculpt nails. Gossip Beauty offered nail technicians for the Y11 and Y13’s attending the Proms for classes of 2019.
Page 50
The Love Bus in the Peak and Regency Cars showed their wonderful, high-class rides for hire to escort them to the Prom. The room was decorated to give a real fashion show feel by Talking Balloons.
Over a hundred people attended on the the night, which focused around a catwalk show, brilliantly compared by Ann Marie of Blanc Occasions. Some of the pupils were brave enough to volunteer as models, alongside the pros from the businesses involved. Ann Marie said: "I'm really pleased to be involved in the event supporting local businesses and providing a helping hand to pupils".
Brookfield Parents and Friends Association hope they've helped pupils make their Prom a night to remember. They would also like to thank all the businesses who worked so hard to make the night such a success. For more photos of the night vist Facebook: RW Photography.

Arts
90 Years of Art Chesterfield Art Club celebrates.. Words & Image: Chesterfield Art Club
What would founder member of Chesterfield Art Club, John Wheat, have thought in 1929 had he known it would still be a thriving club 90 years later? 2019 sees the club celebrating exactly that.
John was an accomplished artist and one of his works is hanging in the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, another is part of the permanent collection at the Dudley Art Gallery. Unfortunately John's life was cut short at 31 as he developed pneumonia and died when manning a post for the Oldbury Home Guard. Another founder member Phyllis Anne Hanson was long lived, dying at the grand old age of 84 in 1994. Her portrait hangs in Chesterfield museum as do many of her works of art, which were donated after her death. Her wish was to go to art college, but her father insisted she join the family saddlery business. She continued with her art, becoming an accomplished artist, she must have felt some sort of inner contentment and pride when she and John, along with President P.M.Robinson, chairman S.R. Moyes, secretary E. Cupitt and treasurer F. Haynes, first sat on the Art Club committees AGM in November 1930.
Held in Bradbury Hall, the rules were decided upon and concluded that ‘the aims and objects of the club are to promote interest in painting and kindred Arts’. The club exists to provide a place where a friendly and welcoming group of people meet twice a month, to paint, draw and attend demonstrations from professional artists who share their knowledge and techniques. Pollyanna Pickering was president for 26 years until her death in 2018 and was a conservator of wild-life, not only using it as her subject matter, from majestic snow leopards to the humble hedgehog she also worked tirelessly to draw attention to their causes through her talks, books Page 52
and art work. The Pollyanna Pickering Foundation continues this work. Her daughter, Anna-Louise, has taken over her role as president and continues to award a trophy, in her mother's name, for the best wildlife picture, chosen by her, from our exhibiting art club members annually.
Today the club meets at Whitcotes Primary School, 7:30 to 9:30pm fortnightly on Fridays. Our annual programme includes, work nights, demonstrations and talks. We also nominate a subject that we can all try. You can join in the fun, or, continue with something you are working on. The emphasis is on friendliness and the club provides somewhere to talk art with like minded people. Our members currently work in acrylic, oil, watercolour, pastel, gouache, pencil and silk screening is also used. Visitors are welcome to attend our demonstration nights (for a small fee of £5 to cover costs). These events are eagerly attended so come early if you want to choose a seat. We do not assume excellence as our club rejoices in having mixed abilities. We prefer to think of our club as a friendly social place and we learn from each other. Or join us on one of our outdoor painting days throughout the year. When the weather is nice there is nothing better than whiling away a few hours, sketch book in hand, with a few friends. Each year there are three exhibitions of member's work. This year we are exhibiting in Ashover Parish Hall on Mon 6 May, Beeley village Hall Sat 22 and Sun 23 May to coincide with the Beeley in Bloom event, and finally at the St Thomas Community Centre, Brampton on Sat 26 October. History
Ancient Sites and Artefacts: Cup and Ring Stone, Loads Road, Holymoorside. Words & Image: Colin Harrison
F
ew people in Chesterfield probably realise that the area (mainly to the west) is liberally scattered with small but interesting works made by prehistoric people. Because of its position near the Peak District, where a large number of stone artefacts have survived for thousands of years, the town is a good starting point to visit many of these, most of which are within range of a moderately fit cyclist. The nearest, not far from Loads Road in Holymoorside, is a large stone into which have been carved cup and rings marks and other workings to the surface. Prehistoric art of various sorts is found all over the world, but the lack of caves (with Cresswell Crags a notable exception for Britain) and the abundance of stone, especially in the north and west of the country, means carvings and arrangements like stone circles are quite widespread here. There are no confirmed explanations as to the meaning of many of these, but their spread means there was probably some unifying significance – cup and ring marks are uncommon south of Derbyshire, although that may be due to the lack of suitable material for carving. Burial mounds and cairns are found all around the country, although lots have been slowly flattened by agricultural use over the centuries. The carved rock may not seem particularly impressive, but it was worked by our ancestors from thousands of years ago, and given the effort required must have been important to them. We're accustomed to the British landscape as it now is, but at the time these carvings were made it was probably very different. Land for farming would have to be painstakingly cleared by hand, with only the most basic of tools,
Page 54
so the siting of the rock may have been significant in that context. To understand how important these carvings must have been, try imagining how you would even start to make them - with no modern tools of any sort. It's quite possible that among the rocks piled behind the large one are others that have been carved but that were simply thrown aside when they were moved from their original place in the nearby fields. To get there: leave Chesterfield on the Chatsworth Road, then take the Holymoorside road. In just under a mile, where the road bears left, take the clearly marked right hand fork (signposted Beeley and Darley Dale). Follow this road around to the right and then go straight up for just over a mile, looking for a footpath sign pointing left, by a 6 bar metal gate; it's just after a drive to 'Home View'. Follow the path that goes uphill (at right angles to the road), with a wall on your right, until you reach the bottom of the third field where there is a waymarker sign. Turn left (so the wall is on your left) and just the other side of the next wall is a large rock with it's surface carved into a series of hollows (cup and ring marks), as well as some deep, straight lines. It's at the edge of large piles of smaller stones, cleared from the surrounding fields over time; it's probably not in it's original location, but, given it's size, it's unlikely to have been moved far. Although the surrounding area is now largely farmland it was the original Holy Moor. The site isn't shown on OS maps, but the relevant ones are Landranger 119 or OS Explorer OL 24 (map ref: SK 321 687).

Giveaway

F
ollowing the release of her brand new album ‘Always In Between’, featuring the hits ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Thursday’, Jesse Glynnes first outdoor show kicks off at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 18th May. S40 Local have a pair of tickets to give away to our readers, courtesy of MP Promotions. ‘I always used to think that you’re nobody until somebody loves you,’ says Jess Glynne, singer, star, voice of the street. ‘Now I know that you have to be that person for yourself.’ She smiles as she says it. ‘It’s been a right old journey getting here, I can tell you.’
In her first few years Jess has carved out a unique slot all of her own. Where others were contemplating the aftermath of heartach, she was always about standing on your own two feet. At the start of 2018, she listened back to her, just completed, second album, Always in Between. Like her blockbuster debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, Jesses new album brokers the hinterlands between pop, soul, R&B and house music. When she looks at the statistics that have marked her sky-rocketing career so far, there is a look of mild disbelief on the face of Jess Glynne, as if this might have happened to someone else. I Cry When I Laugh is one of the defining British pop records of its era. At the time of writing this article it's been a chart staple for 138 weeks. It debuted at number one, spawning 12million worldwide singles sales, 39 weeks on the UK top 10, 2.5billion Spotify streams, a sold out UK arena tour, Brit, MTV: EMA, Ivor Novello, MOBO, Q and Glamour award nominations. Page 58
Jess Glynne is a girl from North London who is noticeably free of airs and graces. The stardust she’s gathered surprises no-one more than Jess herself. She sings because she loves to and writes songs because she wants answers to her own emotional quandaries. Her powerhouse vocal and fearless delivery has captured so many under its spell. But for Jess, this was all just about learning who she is as a person. ‘I don’t write songs because I want a hit,’ she says. ‘I never have and I never will. I want to make a great album, that’s it.’
Jess Glynne has found peace through music. ‘I’m in a great place now,’ she says. ‘I felt like I was in between a normal life and a famous life, this or that relationship, and it’s felt at times like I was lost.’ With age, comes understanding. Over the last couple of years Jess has learned one of life’s vital lessons and put it all into her second record. ‘It wasn’t that I was lost, at all. It was about learning to love myself.’ For an action packed day out, why not celebrate a day of racing with friends and family, before dancing the night away with Jess Glynne in concert to finishing off a perfect Summer’s evening. This is a gig not to be missed…

Garden Tips
April Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
By the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We've had a generally mild winter which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators, as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus. 1: If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes, they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.
2: Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil. 3: If you’re not confident about growing things from seed there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house.
4: Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings.
5: If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year now is the time to save a space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops a really good start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month.
6: Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. 7: As the days warm anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout.
8: If you have fruit trees or shrubs their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will to some extent provide their own micro-climate so will suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost), and can be left to take their chances. 9: Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas from pigeons.
Page 62
10: There isn't a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important if the weather is mild! www.s40local.co.uk
