Intro
Hi and welcome to the May edition of S40 Local.
Firstly, thank you to everyone who has stopped me to say congratulations on ten years of S40 Local, it's really appreciated and I've been blown away by your messages and positivity.
The cover this month comes from Sally Anderson, a local illustrator who has recently been selected by Penguin books to be mentored and trained by them. Read her story on page 6. There’s quite a lot going on around town over the next few months, we talk to Edge Events who bring the Street Food & Grooves Festival to the town centre and the Food Festival to Queen's Park. We talk to local band Clear Vinyl who tell us about their best Chesterfield spots. We find out about Whit Walks, a local tradition, we share info on the Derbyshire Open Arts exhibition and we have the what's on list of events... something for everyone! A special thanks to the dog walker who helped my son after he destroyed his front wheel whilst cycling, and kindly allowed him to use their phone to call home for assistance. Thanks, whoever you were.
Our partner magazine S41 Local continues to grow in popularity, but on one occasion an individual got in touch to say they didn’t want to receive it and we shouldn’t deliver where it says ‘no junk mail etc’. This has always been a difficult one for us, in the past we’ve had people contact us who haven’t received a copy, but wanted one and on checking it was because they were requesting no junk mail. So, if you do display this message, but want to receive the magazine, please let us know or make it clear on the letterbox and we’ll try and get this right. We obviously don’t want to deliver where it’s not wanted and have a waiting list of people who want your copy! In the meantime, have a fantastic May. Paul.

People
Sally & The Beanstalk Words: Paul Chapman Images: Sally Anderson
Sally Anderson, a local illustrator, wins a fantastic opportunity with Penguin books which will, hopefully, see her lovely illustrations in print in children's books.
“
I applied for a competition on Instagram to to take part in a mentoring programme to be an apprentice illustrator for Penguin books” explains Sally. “It was a scheme by Penguin books aimed at unrepresented writers and illustrators trying to get into the publishing industry.”
“The competition was open to writers and illustrators. I’ve a young family and my youngest is now at nursery so I was looking for a way to get back into illustration. It’s not an easy area to break, children’s illustration, ideally you find an agent and that’s your way in, so this is a great opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.” Sally applied and was invited down to Nottingham with fifty writers and nine other illustrators.
“We were all given a number of presentations from various connected people and I had a 1-2-1 with the art director responsible for children’s books at Penguin. This itself was fantastic, it was so exciting to be receiving advice, guidance and feedback from someone who is normally so unattainable” adds Sally. The group was asked to submit twelve spreads in black and white and one in full colour, from the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Sally was provided with a brief, the type and text needed, and it was down to her to interpret the brief and illustrate and lay out. “I approached it as a project, I had a ten-minute talk from Penguin, I met the CEO from one of Penguins divisions which gave me some confidence. At the end of the day I went
People
away with a list of contacts and the route I wanted to take but still didn’t get too excited” says Sally. “I sent off my illustrations and waited. Excitement started to grow when I got a follow up call saying I’d made the next stage!”
“This involved me sitting down for more feedback and resubmitting a new piece taking into account this feedback.” Sally knew they were taking ten people from the 1,700 applicants and after the resubmission and another interview she left with them saying ‘we’ll let you know’ so was thinking 'they won’t pick me, there’s always a chance but competition was strong'.
“In December I got a call saying I’d been selected I was over the moon.” “We’ve had to keep things quiet until Penguin Random House had announced things on social media. I’m starting to come to terms with how privileged I am and am feeling more comfortable with the process.” Work on the project started in January this year, with Sally having a mentee get-together in February with a tour of Penguin and a meet with the CEO, with another scheduled in November.
Penguin is mentoring her; she sends in her work and receives feedback. Sally explains “it’s so rare to get an opportunity like this in the industry, the feedback is invaluable, and I start each week with chats about the week's sample briefs.”
“The best case scenario is, I’ll have a great relationship with Penguin books as a freelance illustrator.” Sally excitedly explained “I have to pinch myself sometimes and am extremely flattered by being selected. I’m so excited and looking forward to what the future has in store, it may be my way back into illustration as a career.”
“I’ve always drawn, from being a very young child I’ve loved to draw. It’s hard to make a living from freelancing in illustration but perhaps the time is now right to seek out that new route. I’m always busy, with a whirlwind family life, but the project has presented a fantastic opportunity and I have to grasp it as best I can.” If you’ve ever seen a scooter flying past you on Chatsworth Road, sometimes with a child, sometimes just an adult, that might be Sally and one of her four children.
I hope the time with Penguin works out, chatting with Sally briefly makes me feel it will and I look forward to seeing her illustrations in print at some point soon. You can be sure we’ll let you know as soon we can!

“At the end of my time with Penguin, I’ll have a portfolio of work that I can present for freelancing, some great contacts and renewed confidence and focus. In the meantime, they are on the lookout for projects I can take on.” Page 8

Whit Walks A Chesterfield Tradition Words & Images: Bernard Jones (Former Derbyshire Times Chief Photographer)
The first Chesterfield ‘Whit Walk’ took place in 1850. Only four Sunday Schools took part in the original event but it was the foundation for something much bigger. Over the past 169 years, the Chesterfield Procession of Witness has become famous far and wide and often includes as many as 30 churches from Chesterfield and district.
Back in the 1920s the Procession was a great excuse for a family outing. Children wore new summer clothes bought especially for the occasion and the churches created tableaux depicting religious scenes and transported by horse and cart; the age of the combustion engine was in its infancy. Large crowds gathered to watch from the pavements. My mother, who passed away last year aged 95, would reminisce about how, as a six year old, in the 1930 walk, she was separated from her parents whilst trying to buy an ice cream and ended in the police van for lost children! My own memories come from the mid 1950s. As a child I could not believe the size of the crowds! Memories that stick in my mind are the Space Shuttle being towed down Chatsworth Road from the then Zion Church and the recreation of Dr. Who's Tardis to promote the visit of Dr. Billy Graham. Best of all, who could forget the sight of Noah walking down the inner relief road trying to reunite with his Ark after it blew away on a particularly windy Spring Bank Holiday!?! All great memories. Yet, 169 years on, the people of Chesterfield can still join in the fun and make their own memories! This year the ‘Whit Walk’ or Procession of Witness is on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, May 27th. Around thirty churches, led by the award winning Carlton Brass, will be gathering in front of the Town Hall in the presence of the Mayor at 9.45am. At around 10.05am the bands will strike up and the ‘Whit Walk’ begins. The Procession winds down Knifesmithgate and on to Cavendish Street, Saltergate, Newbold Road, Tennyson Avenue, Rose Hill East and back to the Town Hall.
Come along and watch or, better still, take part in this longstanding Chesterfield tradition. ‘What if it rains’ do I hear you ask? There is NO plan B! The ‘Whit Walks’ will go ahead, whatever, just as it has done for the past 168 years. Page 20

I
f you’re thinking of cool events, Chesterfield isn’t typically the first place you’d think to look but Laura Ashby and Richard Alsop from Walton have been working hard to put on events that change this perception. They are staging the Food & Drink Festival at Queen’s Park and the Street Food & Grooves Festival in New Square, Chesterfield.
This year sees them run both events again, with more stallholders, more bands and more music. They are also responsible for organising the Bolsover Food Drink Festival and the Matlock Summer Food & Drink Festival. A very busy pair. “We started Edge Events in 2014” says Laura “offering live music packages, weddings and corporate events in and around the area, hosting events at venues like Casa, Proact and Peak Edge Hotel.”
“I came on board in 2017” explains Richard, “my background was much more festivals and music. I’d worked as a 3rd party promoter, initially at The Grapes in Sheffield and Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow when I was a student, getting people into venues that hold 30 to 40 people but later managing 2000 capacity venues like SWX in Bristol.
"Alongside 3rd party promoting, I also toured with many big bands names, including The Kings of Leon, The Jacksons, Chemical Brothers, Missy Elliott, The Cure, Stone Roses, Sam Smith to name a few... "My role was a in hospitality, making sure they were comfortable and get them to stage on time, not always an easy task!”
Working together, now Laura and Richard have the necessary skills and drive to create unique events in the area to showcase local producers and performers, and offer a safe and family friendly space in which to enjoy the experience. Why Chesterfield, I asked? “We’ve been travelling around the UK working on all the major UK festivals for many years and all the time wanting to put on our own events and create a buzz in our home town” says Richard.
“We were tempted to put on a music event but with Tramlines in Sheffield, Y Not in the Peaks and so much in the cities that surround us we decided music plus food would offer something different and appeal to the local interest,” outlines Richard. Page 24
The idea was sparked when the pair went to see Gregory Porter perform in Slovenia, while there they visited a huge street food event in the city centre where thousands of people gathered to soak up the atmosphere whilst local producers opened up pop up stalls offering food and drink, it made it really inclusive and appealed to all ages from a few years old to senior members of the family. Street Food & Grooves (SF&G) was born from this experience. SF&G kicks off on the night of Friday 10 May with a Launch Party from 6pm in New Square, Saturday 11 May from 9am to 10pm and Sunday 12 May from 9am to 8pm. The Square will be full of life with street food from around the world all from local businesses. For more details, visit edgeeventsfestivals.co.uk.
The Food & Drink Festival at Queens’s Park (2nd to 4th August) in its third year has seen attendance grow each year as the variety of food available increases and word spreads. This year it will feature over 80 regional traders, more details at the web site above.
And in the spirit of inclusivity, all four festivals Laura and Richard organise are free, which is great for attendees and shows the commitment the pair have for the area. “Putting on free festivals opens them up to everyone” says Richard, “it is a risk if the weather is poor, people might not turn up and traders really feel it when footfall drops, however, this hasn’t been the case. Attendance has been good, and I hope the people who enjoyed the day will make a date for this year.” “Last year at Queen’s Park we had quite a large contingent of Steam Punk attendees to see the band Victor and the Bully” says Laura. “The evening finished with them leading the audience on a Hoki Coki around Queen’s Park, a brilliant end to a great weekend, let’s hope they do the same this year.”
If you’ve not made it along to either the Street Food & Grooves or the Queen’s Park Food & Drink Festivals, please put the date on the calendar and get down, support the traders, and enjoy some great food and quality music. edgeeventsfestivals.co.uk edgeeventsweddings.co.uk

Life on the road
Up and coming band Clear Vinyl Words: Jennie Sim Images: Clear Vinyl
T
his month's story starts at the Post Office on Chatsworth Road, as usual I was met with amazing service and all round pleasantries in the form of local business owner Terry - what a legend. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Terry, he always makes you feel like you are the most important customer of the day. On this particular visit, Terry drops into conversation that he has a new-found pastime - roadie...
His son Jonjo and pals James, Josh, Jack and Sam who I feel should be called Jam, just to continue with the J theme, make up the band Clear Viny - I was keen to catch up with them between their UK tour dates to discuss what the future holds, recommendations on local restaurants and gossip that make's for a good read. With my name being Jennie I am also thinking there could be hope for me yet in the music industry joining the J posse although I’m not sure the triangle quite fits the bands profile; ting!
The band formed two years ago after Josh, James and Jonjo met Jack and Sam and decided to take things a little more seriously. Jennie - So Lads, you are touring all over the country now, will you be playing in Chesterfield?
Sam: We’ve not actually played Chesterfield, it’s definitely on our radar!
Josh: Playing your hometown is a big thing for most bands, it will be a big one when it happens!
Being on the road so much you must get home stupidly late? Where do you get your late-night naughty food fix? Jack: Best Kebab - decent cheesy chips.
Sam: Pizza Royale, BBQ Chicken pizza with garlic mayo. Josh: LFC Chicken Strips, chips with chilli.
Jennie: Based on the fact I rarely see past 10pm these days I cannot comment, but the recommendations are there for those of you in need of that naughty late night food fix. Page 28
Have you ever had any random objects thrown at you on stage from admirers? Sam: Not yet but if anyone wants to, I wouldn’t mind being thrown a beer, gets a bit warm on stage
Jennie: Not sure you have thought that through Jam, an unopened beer is an exploding missile waiting to happen.
Talking of admirers .... Valentine’s day has just passed were there any romantic meals out for two and if so where? Josh: Bottle and Thyme was good on Valentine’s Day, awesome food and such a great choice. Jennie: Great vegan options also!
Jonjo: Soulville Steak House is amazing, love it in there! Jennie: Not so great vegan options ha ha ha.
You are stuck in a lift, chose one person to be stuck with. James: Jennifer Lawrence. Jonjo: 100% my dog.
Sam: Louis Theroux and his wry smile. Jack: Gotta be James. Josh: Joe Lycett.
Jennie: At this point I am wondering what Jonjo's dog is called - surely it begins with the letter J? Still stuck in the lift, we can get a takeout to you - where would this be from? Jonjo: Mutiara restaurant.
Jennie: Mutiara a great Malaysian restaurant on West Bars, offers a varied menu to dine in or takeaway. Sam: Zahid Indian! The curries are amazing!
Jennie: Zahid Indian Cuisine, Chatsworth Road has a four-star review on Trip Advisor, 4.6 out of 5 on google, this recommendation I will definitely be following up on.
Josh: Davis Fresh Bake - Katie and Guy who run

the place are absolutely amazing and I recommend the pork sandwiches, maybe not for you Jennie. Jennie: Davis Fresh Bake, located on Elder Way and run by husband and wife team Guy and Katie, everything baked fresh in store by Guy! What is your biggest achievement to date?
Josh: Playing a sold out Leadmill gig with Fatherson and Vistas, the biggest highlight so far. Amazing, seeing so many new faces with people on shoulders during our set! Jennie: From what I have seen on facebook it looked amazing... sweaty... but amazing.
When you are not touring where do you hang out? James: Warehouse Rehearsal Studios on Chatsworth Road. We are always writing and demoing new material. We never stop. Jack: Junction, Bottle and Thyme, Einstein’s.
Jennie: Einstein's gets brownie points - since opening in 2015 they have opened its doors to the elderly, homeless and less fortunate on Christmas day. Einstein's offer a great varied menu to match their extensive drinks offerings.

Advertorial
A Passion for Care Samantha Houdmont, Clinical Director at Willowstone, explains why it's so important to her that they offer the best level of care at home. At three years old, I was shown outstanding passion and dedication for care. Nurses, every day, would show infinite compassion and patience for myself and my family when I received treatment for cancer. They inspired me to do the same. Following my recovery and remission, there wasn’t a member of my family that I didn’t practice my 'nursing skills' on. I remember my very first uniform that my Nan bought me, aged four, with bandages and special creams guaranteed to make anyone feel better, even family pets were 'nursed' back to health! Our old dog patiently sighing as her paws were bandaged for the fourth time in a day! I started my nursing career in early 2003, and after qualifying to practice as a nurse, I started a job in a nursing home, moved to A&E for a year and then spent eight years in the community, nursing people in their own homes, which I loved. Following my community role, I specialised in palliative care, and worked for a national charity in the community out-of-hours team. It is during my time here that my own Nan became ill and I spent my time working and travelling back to nurse her. My Nan was the strongest, most beautiful person in the world, and I was privileged to be with her, not only in the decline of her health, but also when she died - at home, where she wanted to be and surrounded by the people that loved her. Following this I took some time out and worked back in A&E and on a few general wards in the hospital. I was struck by how many people in hospital didn’t need to be there - they just didn’t have the right support at home. It was here that I decided to open my own care company. I want to spread the word that with careful planning and support people can stay safely in their homes and live independently. They can be supported in their decisions with staff that have a passion to work collaboratively with families, friends and anyone involved in that person’s care.
At Willowstone we ask how clients like things done. We encourage people to do what they can, with us ready to assist when needed. Our assessments of needs are carried out by qualified nurses and reviewed regularly. We involve the people that are important to the client, so they can make joint decisions. This particularly benefits people with dementia, and at Willowstone, our staff are all trained Dementia Friends, a campaign by the Alzheimers Society. We are part of the Care Quality Campaign and write guest blogs. We support John’s Campaign, where families are encouraged to accompany their loved one into hospital should they need it, so that they can have an advocate when they are feeling vulnerable. When we visit someone, we offer a minimum of one-hour calls, building our relationship and understanding clients’ needs. At Willowstone we want to be known for our high standards of care. We don’t want to be the biggest company out there - but we want to be the best. What sets us apart from the competition? • We are a nurse led service and we want to promote independence at home and reduce hospital admissions for social reasons. • Our care plans and assessments are carried out by a nurse. • We promote empowerment through education, communication, choice and candour. • We listen and collaborate with clients and their families, for true person-centred care. • Your loved one will be assigned a small team of carers (no more than four) so you have continuity of care. All staff are highly trained and paid a fair wage, with travel time, training and mileage included. We recognise that our staff are our biggest asset, and well looked after staff provide better care. Call us today if you would like more information or check out our website www.willowstonecare.co.uk to read our recent blogs.

Over The Hill!
Bakewell's 'best kept secret' revealed ... if you like garden machines! Words: Paul Chapman Images: Torne Valley
T
orne Valley is a bit of a hidden gem in the garden machine business, located just over the hill in Bakewell. It's a family run business, managed by Robert Sherratt who lives in Holymoorside. It’s the kind of store where you will always walk out with a purchase even if you just go in for a browse! Stocking garden and horticultural supplies, their brands include Viking, Stihl (the only local Stihl stockist), John Deere, Atco, Countax and other quality manufacturers. “We only stock quality brands” says Robert, “cheaper brands really aren’t worth stocking in the long run, as we have learned from our experience. Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Gardening should be pleasurable and not frustrating because machinery won’t start”.
Torne Valley have three branches and is independently owned. The Bakewell store is located on Haddon Road, next to the petrol station, Epworth over in Lincolnshire and head office at Tickhill in Doncaster, which has a heavy farming influence. Each branch tailors its products to fit the geology of the area in which it is based, Bakewell sell a lot of machinery for both small and large gardens alike. “Customers are always surprised at the range of over 30,000 product lines we stock” Robert explains. “Apart from the garden machines and ride-ons, we have a range of hand tools and hardware, garden products, animal feed and products, horse tack, even kid's mini tractors, trailers and cars! It really is a huge range, but machinery is where we excel.” The range of products include lawnmowers, garden strimmers, brush cutters, a full range of
hedge trimmers plus a huge selection of leading edge rechargeable lithium ion products which are light weight. “The Sthil products really are a pleasure to use” adds Robert, “easy to handle, start at the flick of a switch, quiet and great for the environment. We presently have rechargeable Stihl strimmers at £99, which are very popular, we really can’t get enough of them.”
“The same is true of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw, this 31.8cc 14” petrol chainsaw retails at £250 but we’re doing them at £189 and, again, they are selling really well. Whether it’s garden maintenance or cutting up logs for the burner these are a great machine!" At Torne Valley, they spend a great deal of time and effort to ensure they price stock competitively. “We are careful when buying stock, the size of the business enables us to bulk purchase during the off season when we can really push to obtain good prices. This enables us to pass these savings on” says Robert.
“As Spring hits us and the garden bursts into life it’s time to get the old garden tools out and if you’re thinking of replacing them please give us a call. “At Torne Valley we’ll listen to your needs and recommend the right machine for you, we’ll then demo it, and once you’ve decided on what you want, we’ll set it up and run it so you’re really familiar with it. No opening a box and scratching your head as you figure out how to put the new lawnmower together” Robert says.
“If you buy from us, you know it works, you know it’s right for you and you build a relationship that will probably see you coming back time and time again … the internet doesn’t do that!” Robert laughs.
When you next need a garden machine, pop over the hill to Torne Valley and see if they can help, don’t forget to mention where you saw them, and if you feel peckish, take a walk into Bakewell, I’ve heard they have some sort of pudding that’s worth a try!

Meet Margery whose students dance their way to success… Just not while she is teaching at Kip! GCSE students by email during the week so they can seek her guidance before they forget something!
Let me introduce you to yet another amazing member of our team at Kip McGrath Chesterfield! Marg, as she is often known, is a qualified teacher with nearly forty years’ experience and is definitely a master of all trades! Marg is qualified to teach primary students up to Year 6 plus GCSE English Language and Literature, which makes her rather special to our team. Her experience and encyclopaedic knowledge of the GCSE exam system makes her lessons full of strategies and ideas for helping individual students navigate the exam paper. She shows them how to make the best use of their time and talents to achieve the highest grade possible. Incredibly, Marg is often found sitting on the floor with her GCSE English Literature students and showing them how to create huge posters that help them remember plots, themes and quotes for exam questions, covering Shakespeare and poetry. Fun to do and easy to revise, the posters are a trademark of her students on their journey to top Literature GCSE grades. You don’t get that level of assistance in a GCSE class at regular school because of the student numbers involved.
It is because of the lower numbers being taught by Marg that her determination to support her students extends into her own time and she routinely keeps in touch with her
This creative approach to learning added to the amazing Kip resources she uses means that any primary students get the same flair and fun from working with her. She really is an incredible teacher and we are so lucky to have her working with us.
So where does this dancing thing come from? GCSE Dance is another of Marg’s specialisms - though sadly she doesn't teach us to dance at Kip! Dancing is her passion and she is equally successful with her dance students achieving high GCSE grades. She is a keen critic of Strictly Come Dancing performances and very knowledgeable as to their flaws!
When not working hard for our students, Marg loves going to the theatre to watch plays and ballets and spending time with her family.
So, if you want to ‘dance’ your way to success in GCSE English Language or Literature with Marg, come along to Kip at Chesterfield for an assessment. The sooner you begin with Marg, the higher your grades! Don’t wait until the last term to benefit from her techniques, year 10 is ideal! We can’t teach you to dance here though!!! Call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 to get started.
Help your child go far with Kip McGrath Our qualified teachers create individual tutoring programmes for your child, using proven Kip McGrath methods.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Coping... With period changes during the menopause. Words & Image: Shelley Chapman
T
his month I’m going to talk about irregular periods during peri-menopause. This is a really worrying time, as women with often once regular periods can start to have irregular, lighter, heavier, spotting or even missing periods!
Much Heavier Bleeding: With the lighter bleeding, the lining of your uterus was thinner, but when your oestrogen levels are higher the lining of your uterus becomes thicker, which takes more blood to shed it during your period.
This can happen over a number of years (4-8 is the average), whilst your hormones are sorting themselves out. But we’re all different, there are no rules and your journey will be unique to you. It can be a good idea to start using a diary to track your periods.
Dark Coloured Blood: This is ‘old’ blood and can present itself as thicker or thinner than normal, but if it has an odour, go and see your doctor, as it might be an infection.
Periods were regular because your oestrogen and progesterone levels were behaving in a consistent pattern, every month. But when your body starts to go into peri-menopause (from your late 30s and 40’s), your hormones fluctuate, your periods become more erratic, and so does the way you bleed and when.
Irregular or Shorter Cycles: Lower oestrogen levels during the beginning of peri-menopause makes the uterus lining thinner and this makes your periods shorter or lighter. It can be difficult to ‘predict’ when your next period might come because your body won’t stick to the normal oncea-month rule. It can help to carry some pads or tampons in your bag, just in case you get a period earlier than you were expecting.
Spotting Between Periods: This can happen just before or after your period or even mid-ovulation. There’s no need for a tampon, just some spotting in your pants! Again, a pad (and change of pants) in a little bag is good, so it doesn’t affect your confidence whilst you’re out.
If this spotting is happening every couple of weeks, it’s a good idea to go and see your doctor. Longer Periods: Spotting tends to be at the beginning of peri-menopause, but longer breaks between periods (more than 5 weeks) is a sign of later stages of peri-menopause, because your body is essentially trying to reduce the amount of eggs your ovaries produce. Page 40
Again, keeping a diary can help. If you’re bleeding heavily for more than a week, going through tampons or pads like they’re going out of fashion, or having to change them during the night, this loss of blood could reduce your iron levels and result in you being tired or lethargic. Go go to the doctor for a quick check-up and to check your hormone levels.
Missed Periods:You’re not deemed to be in the menopause until your periods have stopped for at least 12 months. For quite a number of women, they can go to 12 months, or maybe even 18 and then, hey ho, another period comes along! This usually happens to women between the ages of about 45 to 55, but be mindful… a lot of women get caught out. So, it’s advisable to use contraception for at least 18 months after your last period (some err on the side of extreme caution and go to 2 years). I’d love you to join my closed Facebook group, where you’ll get help amongst some fantastically supportive women, all going through this menopausal journey. See you next month, Shelley x Menopause Help

Anyone for Tennis? If you happen to be walking close to the village of Holymoorside, you may well hear voices calling: ‘Fifteen-Love’, ‘Thirty-Forty’, ‘Deuce’, mingled with the local birdsong. Holymoorside Tennis Club lies in a picturesque rural setting next to the Hipper Valley Trail.
It's been here since 1973, beginning life in the 1930s in a different village location. Cows would sometimes invade the grass courts, leaving unwelcome ‘deposits’. Nowadays you'll find three, well-maintained Tarmac courts, a small clubhouse with changing facilities, toilets, a kitchen - and enthusiastic, friendly members.
Club’s chair, Keith Singleton, says: "We have beautiful surroundings and you’ll be sure of a warm welcome. There's a ‘drop in’ session every Tuesday and Sunday morning, and members’ club night 6pm on Wednesdays. We have teams in the Chesterfield and District Summer and Winter Leagues, and a Summer Club Tournament with a trophy for the winner. "The Open Day on Sunday 19th May allows you and the family to meet club members for a game."
Current membership for a full year is £70, and £15 for juniors, giving use of the courts at any time during the year, apart from match days. Day fees for nonmembers are £3 per adult and £1 per junior. For more details please see our advertisement or contact Sue Wraith (Secretary) on 0114 258 3631.

Christian Aid Week Christian Aid Week takes place across the week of 12 to 18 May.
Envelopes for Christian Aid Week will be posted and then collected around the Chatsworth Road area. The theme for Christian Aid Week is “All mums should live” (see www.caweek.org for details). Donations can be given online or in the envelope either to the collector or at St Thomas’, Brampton.
Fundraising Mayhem Dan Hunt works at TriumphWorld, Chesterfield and describes himself as an ordinary everyday 30 year-old guy, with a keen interest in cycling.
This year will see him step out of his comfort zone to raise money by taking part in a 24-hour mountain bike race, Mountain Mayhem, competing as solo rider. "This kind of event is very new to me, I cycle as much as I can, and have ridden things like the Ard Rock Enduro, but this 24-hour solo is my first!" says Dan.
"I will be competing in this race, in the hope of raising as much money as possible for Great Ormond St Hospital.
"I'm a father of two young kids, and have been fortunate that neither have needed any form of critical care. But there are so many families out there that are not so lucky. Hopefully, whatever the amount, with donations and help, we can help change their lives!"
If you'd like to support Dan on his 24 hour sufferfest you can donate to his cause at the link below (or search him out on social media).

The MaddiFin Cup Match
‘Since doing the CAP Moneycourse, I feel so much more in control of my finances.’ Would you like to be able to say the same?
Words from Neil Hutchinson
CAP Money is a simple, yet highly effective, money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that really works. This course will help anyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can save and prevent debt. Redeemer King Church, Walton Evangelical Church and St Thomas’ Church have partnered with Christians Against Poverty to offer CAP Money courses in our community. The service they offer is completely free. The next course is at 7.30pm on Thursdays 9th, 16th and 23rd May and will be at Monkey Park Community Centre, 128A Chester Street, Chesterfield S40 1DN. To benefit from the course, all three sessions should be attended.
"We are a bunch of ageing and retired Chesterfield Sunday league footballers that come together every year to play a football match, to raise money for two charities, Bloodwise and CLIC Sargent.
"The game is called The MaddiFinn Cup, after two amazing children, brother and sister Finlay and Maddison Share. Both have had a tough start to life, but with the help and support of these two charities they have managed to battle through and show great courage and strength to now live a normal, mischievous life. "We wanted to say thank you to these charities, and at the same time show our support for Finlay and Maddison. "For the last three years, we have played a fund-raising match and raised over £1000 every year. This year, we'd like to raise more, and would love to see more people come down to support us."
Sunday 12 of May will see the teams play at the Staveley MWFC Ground, Inkersall Road with a 12pm kick off.
Call or text Tim Soar on 07856 417740 to find out when the next course is running near to you. Visit www.capmoney.org.uk to find out more about the course, to register and to see where courses are running in other parts of the country.

Garden Tips
May Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
B
eing in the garden on any sunny day in May has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings… As potato shoots appear do not forget to ‘earth up’ the growing shoots. This serves two purposes – young potato shoots do not like frosty weather, so cover over the shoots with soil for protection, and it also helps to avoid young tubers from turning green with sunlight exposure.
Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: French and runner beans, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and squash as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season.
Towards the end of the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres but are often displayed earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well-watered until they can go into the open garden. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month, seeds for both can be sown directly into the ground. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely.
Sow peas outside now with pea sticks in place early and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. climbing French and runner beans) that will need them later. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch) and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds' nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year.
It's that time of year when spring bulbs are now beyond their best, but as they fade the tidy gardener can't resist the temptation to 'tidy them'. Once the flowers have faded you can cut the head off the flower if you want to, don't cut back the leaves until they are completely yellow, and don't tie them up either, the leaves need to continue to produce chlorophyll (food), the leaf needs exposure to as much light as possible, the bulb needs the energy in the leaf to be reabsorbed into the bulb ready for next year. Once your leaves have completely withered your bulb is now dormant, so you can lift them if you need to thin them out or move clumps that are too big to new areas, they don't generally need feeding they're very self-sufficient.
Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs (parsley, coriander, basil etc.) for regular harvesting.
