Intro Hi

During this month I've had the pleasure of working with two students from Brookfield who'd joined me for a week on work experience. A huge thanks to Jess Hall and Victoria Ruck for their enthusiasm and the work on editorial, Victoria's piece on the climate is on page 22 and Jess's article on the band, Alpaca Factory will feature in July. It's refreshing to gain a younger perspective, at a time when climate change is such a focus and Victoria chose this for her article. I also attended the finals of the Young Enterprise awards and again focus and attention was on the climate and environmental impact of the choices we make... congratulations to the regional winners, St Marys and good luck in the finals. Seeing the younger generation's concerns over climate and plastic, I did wonder how many of them are making daily change? It was Mental Health awareness week recently and we have a piece about a group set up by a couple of guys who just want to make a difference. We also have a new advertiser offering therapy if you or people you know need it. We've been out and about a bit too; I went to Kai Undrell's excellent film preview - 'Stand Up' at Chesterfield College, we went to the Street Food & Grooves Festival in New Square, cheered the runners at the Holymoorside 10K race and we ran the HARP Mud Run. There is so much going on in the area and it's down to us all to make these events a success and support our community, so please get out and support them. The Classic Car show at Eckington is in a few weeks, is an excellent evening out and through the local Rotary Clubs raises a significant amount for local charities... make a date of 12 June. Anyway, ciao for now, perhaps we'll see you at a local event. Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Frazer Longford & Jason Cotton

I

n January 2018, Frazer Longford’s friend decided to take his own life. He wasn’t the first friend to do so, he was the third. This had a big effect on Frazer and he struggled to come to terms with it, he wanted to understand why it happened to so many men, what had motivated them? He wondered why blokes don’t open up and ask for help. “It was whilst discussing this on my journey to work with my car share buddy, vocalising my thoughts, that I figured out I wanted to help men friends and colleagues, who might be struggling, I wanted to reach out and say ‘look whatever you’re going through, I’m here for you’.” It was a brave step that Frazer took next - he booked a meeting room at work and invited all the men along at 9:15am one morning. “All the men turned up, wondering what was going on, and I stood up and told my story, shared my experiences and said just that…‘whatever you’re going through I’m here for you’.” Jason Cotton was one of the men in the meeting room that morning. Page 6

“What Frazer said really resonated with me, I’d struggled with my mental health, I’d had similar experiences where people close to me had taken their own lives, leaving me and the people around them without answers and what Frazer did fired me up to do something.” Frazer and Jason decided they’d book a meeting room, again at work, and invite men to come along to a safe space where they could talk. They put up posters in the lifts and the gents' and walked round talking to people. Jason admitted “I found this really awkward, it was difficult to broach the subject with men and talk to them about their mental health and emotions, I could sense the tension as we approached, there was a lot of stigma around the whole subject. Whereas Frazer seemed much more comfortable”. Around 20 people attended that first session; Frazer and Jason had no training or experience but wanted to help men talk. They kicked off the session with no plan and no idea how to run the session.

Frazer described poor mental health as, "an illness that makes the mind fuzzy, by talking you’re clearing the clouds"

People “Looking back at the first session, it was a little clinical”, explained Jason, “but we’ve learned and adapted along the way. At the session Frazer told his story again, to the group of men sitting around a meeting table. We developed a confidentiality rule, what’s said in the room, stays in the room, which we reiterate at each session – and people opened up.” “We want to provide men with a space where they can speak and express themselves, or where they can just listen to others and say nothing. For some people just hearing from others who’ve been there helps. There’s absolutely no pressure to speak, there are no expectations.” After 14 months running sessions at work, Frazer and Jason have recently expanded to offer the same style sessions at Stonegravels Parish Centre. Jason explained, “the sessions are for men over 18, there’s no need to book you can just turn up, there’s no need for an appointment and they’re free of charge. People can stay as long as they want to stay, some people leave after 30 minutes if they have other commitments, other people stay much longer. We welcome everyone who arrives, but they don’t have to introduce themselves, there’s no register… people are met with a handshake, a cup of tea, coffee, biscuits and snacks. "We have six people welcoming men as they arrive; Frazer Longford, Jason Cotton, Lisa Longford, Francesca Whyld, Rebecca Tustin and Trisha Black, women who’ve been affected by men, in their lives, who have committed suicide. The women are sometimes invited to talk at the beginning of the session, to provide another perspective, but then leave and the men talk amongst themselves. At the session connections form, based on shared experiences, the people in the room tend to pick up on something said by someone else, something that resonates with them, and offer their own perspective.

or family breakdowns, men struggling with financial problems, divorce, abuse, addiction. The reasons people come are wide and varied, everyone is welcome – the sessions are simply for men who are struggling to cope and want some support and someone to talk to.” Frazer described poor mental health as, “an illness that makes the mind fuzzy. By talking you’re clearing the clouds, it can help you see things with some clarity. If you don’t clear the clouds, it will get worse and worse.” Jason describes how the atmosphere in the room changes from the beginning of the sessions. “We’ve seen men arrive in tears but leave looking as though a cloud has lifted, feeling lighter and less weighed down. This is just by talking, being listened to, and sharing time and space with other people who understand.” “Coming along to a session can be a turning point for people, it’s a really big and brave step to take and we recognise that. We do everything we can to make sure people feel comfortable and to offer support. We’re not counsellors, therapists or medical in any way, we’re just two guys who have experienced what people are going through, who want to support other people, to have positive impact on their mental health and stop people feeling the only option is to commit suicide.” The next Stonegravels session is on 13 June at 7pm. You can find out more on the facebook page: Men-Talk. Men-Talk will also have a stall at Chesterfield Pride this year on Sunday 21 July.

Concerns On Climate Change. From Someone It’ll Affect. Words: Victoria Ruck (Brookfield School Work Experience) Images: Adobe Stock

60

% of our wildlife has disappeared. 80% of marine litter is from land-based sources. By 2050, sea levels are expected to rise by between 1 and 2.3 feet due to glaciers melting. If these statistics scare you, it merely emphasises the urge that we, as a whole, must do something to prevent our world from future disaster. I am one of the young people who will be affected by climate change, as a repercussion of the actions of those above me, whether it be the people in charge of our world, or simply the people who I see everyday. We must all take responsibility for our actions and come to terms with the fact that we are all contributing to it, whether we are aware of that or not. Global warming is happening, and it is real and it must be stopped. We simply cannot sit back and wait for everything to be solved. Instead of looking up to the leaders of the country, I have since started to gain my inspiration from the likes of young activist Greta Thunberg, who has recently gained the attention of the media for being a strong voice of the people who want to take a stand against climate change. The Extinction Rebellion movement has demonstrated a sense of unity against the lack of action to tackle climate change through peaceful protests located across the world.

Page 22

If we want to save our world, we all need to contribute, because if we continue to turn the other cheek and ignore the problem, it is only going to get worse. I know we’ve all been told to cut down on our meat intake, use public transport and recycle, and it may seem blindingly obvious, but doing these can genuinely help save the Earth, before we reach the point at which we can’t reverse the effects of climate change. Whilst reading this, you may be thinking “Doesn't this sixteen-year-old girl have better things to do than ranting about global warming?” and yes, you may be right. I am certainly no expert and am definitely underqualified to educate the masses by writing an article on climate change, however, I am concerned for the animals that are dying as a consequence of the society I am part of. I am concerned for the irreversibility of our actions that have built an abundance of litter, because humans are careless with the world we’ve been given. I am concerned not only for the first world’s future, but for third world countries, who are more dangerously affected than we are. And yes, I may just be someone who’s an insignificant cog in the big machine that is the world, but if one person can make a difference and inspire many others, then I know that there is still hope left for us.

Cover Artist

Cover Art: Brenden Jones What influences Brenden during his time at Tattoo HQ. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Brenden Jones

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and did your parents know? I was 15. I had all intentions of getting a tiger tattooed but didn’t have enough money, so I ended up with a tiny butterfly on my ankle. My parents didn’t find out until we went on holiday later that year. My mum didn’t seem to mind at the time, so I had a wizard on my arm … this time she did mind, I got a clip round the ear and she didn’t speak to me for over a week. What was the first thing you tattooed on someone else, who was it and was it any good? My first tattoo was done in 2001 on a lad from Scotland, a tribal style sun with extremely wobbly lines. So, I have one tattoo, it is a Frank Turner album cover (Love Ire & Song, best album ever, give it a listen) done at Tattoo HQ no less. When did you set up Tattoo HQ and what has been your biggest challenge to date in running your own business? I set up tattoo HQ in 2009 with my business partner Chris. We’ve just celebrated our 10th birthday in the shop. I would have to say that the biggest challenge is keeping going for another 10 years! What advice would you give to someone looking to get their first tattoo? I would advise anyone looking at getting there first tattoo to take their time. Find an artist whose work you really love and make sure the image is something that you want on your body for the rest of your life. Definitely don’t go for the cheapest, it may well cost you more in the long run getting it covered up.

Thank you very much. Graphic Design is something I want to get into, the cover art is all hand drawn, not a computer in sight. I’ve recently been looking at doing a BA honours in illustration/graphic design to broaden my skill-set. It’s something I’ve always been interested in doing and it will help me grow as an artist. How did you come up with our front cover design? By accident really, I was initially going to do a traditional tattoo-style panther, but when I sat down to draw, the rose idea just popped into my head. What or who inspires you? In the art world, there has been a bunch of people over the years. M C Escher caught my eye as a child, I would say my favourites by him are House of Stairs and Other World. In the mid 80s, I got into graffiti art which I think translates into my tattoos. Mode 2 was, and still is, my favourite graffiti artist. You can give one piece of advice to your younger self as you're about to leave school, what would you say? Work hard to achieve your goals and enjoy what life brings. Our thanks to Brenden for taking the time to produce two stunning, unique cover designs for us, S40 and S41 Local cover pages. Check out his social media to keep up-to-date with his work. bren3000 Tattoo HQ

Not only are you an exceptional tattooist, but clearly a talented artist. Our front cover is graphically designed, is this line of work something you may explore in the future? Page 26

Is Therapy Facing a Revolution? Paul Shepherd, Gritstone

In early 2018 I found myself in a training room in Lowestoft being asked if I would be happy to take part in a demonstration of a technique called EFT, commonly known as ‘tapping’. It was part of a course I was undertaking, and I had to recall something that caused me to feel anxious or even a memory or behaviour that I would like to change. No problem I thought, having lived a full and adventurous life, I had plenty to choose from, so I recalled the experience of a primary school teacher who used to beat me up for talking in class when I was 10. Something I had long ago confined to memory. Forty-five minutes later I felt completely different and suddenly this childhood event, that I now realise had shaped my experience as an adult, was gone. I knew where the memory was, but it no longer mattered! It was weird. I had experienced something very special and wanted to know more so I could use the technique in my business environment and to help friends and family. Having worked in the learning, development and training sector for the last 20 years I am always drawn to ways we can improve our personal and working lives. As an NLP Master Practitioner and Resilience Trainer, the awareness and practice of EFT has become a powerful and special technique I now use in my business, to great effect. The History and Background of EFT In the 1970s, it was discovered that by verbally focusing on a problem or issue (emotional or physical) – while manually stimulating acupuncture

Page 28

points, doctors could bring surprising relief in their patients – particularly about fears, phobias and physical responses to stress. One of the medical students, Gary Craig, made it into a more simplified form, adding key NLP (neuro linguistic programming) concepts, and called it EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT Tapping enables us to tune in to the negative patterns that we form around our uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or troubling memories. We ‘tap’ on the correct pressure points while bringing the thoughts or emotions into consciousness. The aim is to find relief, relaxation, and promote healing around the emotional or physical issues that hold us back. The therapeutic effects of this technique are recognised around the world, and recently the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended EFT for further research in dealing with post traumatic stress disorder. You can use EFT tapping for anxiety, weight loss issues, pain, stress, cravings and many other aspects. So, is therapy facing a revolution? Find Out More I’ll be running a workshop on EFT at the St Thomas’ Centre, Chatsworth Road, Brampton where you can learn more about this technique and how it can enhance your wellbeing - more details below - or please call me on 07957 836521. Or visit www.eftinternational.org

Raising the 'Rooves' The next big thing?

ut back to Easter bank holiday at the O2 Academy, Sheffield. Two friends and I went to see, possibly, the greatest band in all the seven kingdoms; The Rooves. Melodic indie riffs, perfectly blended with the unmistakable ‘Sheffield’ sound, with their ‘Jaws 2’ single being compared to the Arctic Monkeys, it’s clear these guys have the potential to go far and S40 & S41 Magazines are behind them all the way! On the drums we have Brendon Potgieter, on guitar we have Dan Haines and Leyton Ramsdale, playing the bass is Ross Castledine and on lead vocal is Charlotte Henry. Nathan: Firstly, thank you for taking the time to do this interview and congratulations on a great gig at the O2. So, where did you guys all meet and how long have you been together? Charlotte: We’ve been together almost two years now. We all went to the same secondary school (Brookfield Community SChool in Chesterfield), but it wasn’t until Sixth Form when we formed the band. Brendon, Ross and I were at a friend’s house party and I was with a couple of my mates playing the guitar and singing, just as a joke. Brendon sent Dan a video of me singing ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears and it kind of all just took off from there. I remember him showing me a demo of ‘Games Without the Fun’ without vocals, I wrote the lyrics to it the next day and brought it to rehearsals, and that was the first song we ever wrote together! Nathan: Hope we get to see a Toxic cover at your next gig! I like it though, and where did the name ‘The Rooves’ come from? Dan: We needed a name for ages and our old bass player was talking to Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers about our band, it was on the roof of The Avenue Club (Chesterfield). He suggested "The Rooves" as a name. None of us liked it at the time but it was better than just saying we had no name, so we went with it.

Nathan: That’s got to be up there in terms of most random band name stories! So, how would you describe your sound and who are your influences? Dan: Indie rock kinda vibe but with funky guitar riffs thrown in every now and then. Brendon: We started off covering a lot of songs by ‘The Strokes’ and ‘Arctic Monkeys’ at practice and ever since then we’ve enjoyed including them in our setlists. I would say they’re our main influences. Charlotte: Or at least that’s where our sound is rooted. Ross: Initially, we were strongly influenced by large indie rock bands as can be heard in songs like ‘Jaws II’ and ‘Nausea’. But as we began to explore our sound, we branched out becoming more individual, taking slightly jazzier inspiration from bands like ‘Boy Pablo’ and ‘Her’s’. Nathan: You can definitely hear that in your songs. So who writes the songs and where do you get your inspiration from? Charlotte: We don’t really have a set way of writing songs; our songs seem to stem from either little guitar riffs or melodies we think sound groovy. I’d say we all contribute to this too, it’s kinda difficult writing songs now with us all being at different universities but we’re constantly sending voice memos into the group chat with new ideas. Lyrically speaking, Brendon and I wrote all the songs on our first EP together. On our more recent EP I wrote a song called ‘Blue, 1903’ which took inspiration from Picasso’s Blue Period amongst other things. Leyton: We began writing Nausea with a riff that I made about 6 months prior to finishing it. Me and Brendon weren’t fond of the song originally but decided to stick with it, luckily, as it’s one of our most popular songs to play live!

Nathan: So fortunately, there won’t be any disputes over who gets the royalties and an ‘Oasis’ style break up. Do you have any pre/post gig rituals?

Nathan: Cheers, I’ll be sure to check them out. To finish off then, what have you got coming up and where can people keep up to date?

Ross: During our recording sessions at 2Fly in Sheffield, we’d go to eat at Nando’s during the breaks, this eventually developed into the first choice for food after soundchecks for a large majority of our gigs.

Brendon: In terms of new music, we’re releasing a new song called ‘Television’ soon. This is a track we’ve all put a lot of effort into, we spent a few days in Liverpool recording it at Sugarhouse productions, they have recorded with the likes of Pale Waves, Viola Beach, and more.

Leyton: Eating at Nando’s has become an essential part to our pre-gig routine, I’m not sure we’d play the same without it. The free beer helps too. Nathan: If you could date any musician past or present who would it be and why? Dan: DJ Steves from Kurupt FM, he seems like a nice lad. Ross: Gotta be Cal Chuchesta for me, best teeth in the game. Who's the biggest diva in the band? Brendon: Dan is the diva. Say no more. Nathan: Who was your favourite teacher at Brookfield?

Charlotte: BBC introducing have asked us to play YNOT for them on the Friday which we’re all very excited about. Leyton: We’re also planning to do a small tour in the summer. So far, we’re playing in Nottingham early June, Manchester on the 5 August and headlining the Leadmill in Sheffield on the 9 August. Hopefully, followed by a gig in London. Brendon: Keep up to date by checking our social media and to listen to our music just search ‘The Rooves’ on all the major music platforms.

Leyton: It has to be Mr. Styles, he was actually in his own band called “The Recroots” and was the one who told us about 2Fly studios where we recorded our first 2 EPs. Nathan: So, who's your tip to be the next big thing? Dan: ‘Brown Lion Zoo’ and ‘Redfaces’ are worth checking out if you haven’t heard of them. I went to 'Brown Lion Zoo’s' “Lifeline” release show in Nottingham where both bands played, and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Ross: ‘SPINN’, while having made massive leaps recently, are definitely on the brink of something huge. Really nice group of guys, it was a pleasure to have supported them last year.

The findings come from a survey conducted by the BCA, which unearthed that 21% of people locally don’t take any action when they experience back or neck pain and 11% wouldn’t seek help from a health professional if they were experiencing these issues. Chiropractic Awareness Week aims to educate people about the easy ways they can avoid or alleviate back pain, which, on average, 80% of the nation has experienced. Regularly changing posture and remaining seated for no longer than 30 minutes at a time are just a couple of the simple ways to prevent or reduce pressure on the back. Lyn Bryce from Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic on Chatsworth Road, commented on the findings: “There are so many people in the Midlands living with neck or back pain because they don’t know what preventative steps they can take, so we want to shine a light on the simple changes which can help. Chiropractic Awareness Week is designed to educate everyone on the best ways to prevent and tackle back or neck pain, from changing your posture when sat at a desk, to sleeping on the right mattress.” “Easy changes to your day-to-day life can make a significant difference, but if your pain doesn’t reduce or is prolonged, you should always see a health professional for further guidance.”

Other things which people can bear in mind include: Lifting and carrying: Remember to bend from the knees, not the waist when lifting heavy items. Face in the direction of movement and take your time. Hold the object as close to your body as possible, and where you can avoid carrying objects which are too heavy to manage alone, ask for help or use the necessary equipment. Sleep comfortably: The Sleep Council recommends buying a new mattress at least every 7 years. Mattresses lose their support over time, so if you can feel the springs through your mattress, or the mattress is no longer level, your mattress is no longer providing the support you need. Everyone has different support requirements, so when purchasing your mattress ensure it is supportive for you. If you share a bed and require different mattress types, consider two single mattresses which are designed to be joined together, to ensure you both get the support you need. Straighten Up!: The BCA has created a programme of three-minute exercises, Straighten Up UK, which can be slotted in to your daily schedule to help prevent back pain by promoting movement, balance, strength and flexibility in the spine.

GR Glazing Totally Outnumbered Meet Gareth Richards, who, like many of us, manages family and business with equal importance. Words: Bekah Anstey Dancing, gymnastics and swimming are amongst many of GR Glazing’s talents. Well, he can talk you through just about everything, but ask him to bust out a back flip or a pirouette and he may struggle. The owner of GR Glazing is a proud dad of two girls, AKA dad's taxi, costume maker and a blank canvas for make-up application. Gareth is totally outnumbered at home, with partner Sarah and two very cute daughters. Introducing the proud owner of GR Glazing - Gareth Richards GR Glazing is a double-glazing company based in Chesterfield, which has been giving complete satisfaction to customers for many years. With high expectations, owner Gareth really does pride himself on his standard of work and quality of the materials he uses. Gareth is extremely experienced and had lots to say about his business. "We used Gareth to install a new front door, kitchen window and new facias, soffits and guttering. He and his team have done an outstanding job. He is timely and ultra professional from start to finish and I can’t recommend him highly enough. I will definitely use him again." Phil Green "Really impressed with Gareth. He was honest, reliable and straight forward. There was no sales jargon or pressure. He came on the day and did exactly what he said he would do and got loads done in just one day. Charged exactly what he said he would. Tidied up well and was trustworthy enough for me to let him lock up. Would highly recommend" Abi "Really great job by Gareth. Advertorial

‘’I wish we’d started this earlier!’’ ‘’Oh, why did we leave it so late?’’ ‘’We didn’t know the difference that you could make to us’’ Sadly these are the most frequent things we hear at this time of the year from both parents and some students just before they go off to sit their GCSE Maths or English exams! The stress suffered by all parties during that all-important year 11, usually around the mock exams, parents and students wake up to the fact that they are in danger of not getting the grades they want or need for their life’s ambitions. It is all very well saying the student must do more work or try harder, but more of the same rarely works. In our experience the student has some real gaps in their learning and often a low level of confidence in their ability. Constant previous exam papers during class in the run up to the exam only exacerbates the situation with the result that the student loses what confidence they had, feels a lower selfesteem and generally settles for a lower grade than they really wanted or are capable of. Kip offers GCSE Maths, English language and English literature bespoke tuition for your teenager’s needs, but even we need a bit of time to pull the rabbit of higher grades out of the hat. We have reported many times on the ‘predicted’ to ‘actual’ significant improvement in grades and as we await the start of this summer’s exams, we are confident our students will do it again!

Some stories from this year Richard came last October, giving himself plenty of time. He was very relaxed and laid back, unlike his mum! He was hovering around a grade 3 and Lynda, our maths tutor at Chesterfield knew it

would take more than luck to get him to a Grade 4… a change of pace and attitude was effected by her, and now he is soaring and mum is happy. Claire came in March, very stressed and anxious to get a GCSE Maths 8 or 9. She lacked confidence but was ambitious. Sue, our Maths tutor at Matlock, soon turned her around and she is confidently tackling 8/9 questions with ease. Rachel arrived in June for her GCSE Maths next year, in 2020. She knows what she wants, and she and Sue sat down and devised a plan to get her there. One relaxed and confident young lady, she now knows what needs doing and by when to get her grades. Big smiles, sensible girl! George arrived a mere 10 DAYS before his exam to work on his GCSE English literature with Julie, having had something of a pre exam meltdown. A single session helped to steady his nerves and focus his mind, but think how much more she could have done if he had come a bit earlier! The moral of this tale is … don’t be a George, be a Rachel. Come along as early as possible in the GCSE journey, and give yourselves, and us, more time to help you enjoy the progress, gain the confidence and get the results you are really capable of. You can have a free assessment anytime and the investment for the sessions over the year will pay dividends in your teenager’s career and confidence for ever more. Call Jo now on 01246 220224!

Health

30 Symptoms... That might give the menopause away. Words & Image: Shelley Chapman

I thought one of the most beneficial things I could give you is knowing what the top 30 Symptoms of the Menopause are, so that if the doctor can’t find anything wrong with you, these will hopefully help alleviate your fears. They aren’t in any order, they’re just the most common ones!

Allergies: Itching eyes, sneezing, rashes, dizziness, swelling or cramps. If worried, see your doctor. Burning Tongue: Lips or mouth, bad breath or bad taste in your mouth. Change in Body Odour: Common but not wanted!

Irregular Periods: Light/heavy/spotting/none for months. But you can still get pregnant, until you haven’t had a period for at least 12 months (18 is safer).

Osteoporosis: Dropping oestrogen causes loss in bone mass and density.

Hot Flushes: A sudden feeling of heat spreading through your upper body, arms, neck and face.

Tension in your Muscles: Strained or tight muscles in neck, shoulders and back, maybe an increase of stiffness, soreness, aches and pains throughout your body.

Night Sweats: BIG hot flushes when you’re asleep, that wake you up! Memory Lapse: ‘Brain Fog’, forgetting things, why you went into a room etc., but if you’re at all worried, seek an appointment with your doctor. Tiredness: Changes in your hormones causing irritability and feeling totally exhausted. Loss of Libido: Loss of sexual desire and vaginal dryness. Bloating: Changing your eating habits can really help, but if it persists, see your doctor. Hair Thinning or Loss: More brittle and drier or your scalp becoming more visible. Mood Swings: Frequent during menopause due to your hormones changing. Sleep Problems: Often because anxiety levels are increased due to your other symptoms! Palpitations: Heartbeat increasing, shallower breathing, a feeling of terror or panic. Urine Infection: Lowering oestrogen levels can make you more sensitive to infection. Weight Gain: Changing hormones can have a significant impact on your weight. Incontinence: Bladder ‘leaks’, often during jumping, running, laughing or sneezing! Dizziness: For a few seconds or maybe longer which can end up in a fall. If this happens, consult a doctor. Digestive Problems: In the way your body digests the food you eat.

Itching Skin: Can get dryer, thinner and look less youthful.

Tingling: Like ants crawling over your skin, or a burning sensation, get an appointment with your doctor. Irregular Heartbeat: Palpitations and arrhythmias. Go to your doctor immediately, just to be on the safe side. Difficulty Concentrating: Due to oestrogen deficiency, generally returns to normal after menopause. Anxiety: Reduction in oestrogen and magnesium levels, which play a vital role in regulating your mood. Depression: Can happen at any time, at any age. Breast Pain: Or tenderness in one or both breasts. If persists for a couple of months or is severe, consult your doctor, just to be on the safe side. Joint Pain: Early treatment can often bring a cure or lessen the chance of developing arthritis. Doing Ordinary Things Exceptionally Well Meet the team and new advertisers Pinewood Properties. Words: Bekah Anstey (S41 Local) This month saw the Estate Agents of the Year Awards (ESTAs) 2019 held in London, I am lucky enough to get the low down from one of Chesterfields top Estate Agents Pinewood Properties, well, actually they are officially the ‘Best Estate Agent in the East Midlands’. I met up with Stacey Davis-Bowler, Director of Pinewood Properties, to have a chat about the awards and his teams’ achievements. Stacey congratulations on your success, you are all clearly still buzzing from your trip to London, can you tell me a little about the ESTAs and the awards your team won? The ESTAs to Pinewood Properties are so important, we look forward to them every year. They are the largest independent customer service feedback and awards scheme for the residential property industry in the UK. This year we were lucky enough to win 7 team awards and 1 individual award which is a huge achievement for us and I’m extremely proud of this. • Best Estate Agent in Derbyshire • Best Estate Agent in the East Midlands • Best Agent with 2 to 5 Branches • Best Letting Agent in Derbyshire • Best Letting Agent in the East Midlands (as voted for by landlords)

Stacey, running a successful business for many years must mean you have a secret formula, can you share this with our S40 and S41 Local readers? I absolutely do have a secret formula but I’m afraid I can’t share this, however what I can tell you is that at Pinewood Properties we offer a unique service and it keeps bringing our customers back to us. I have clients from back in the day (2004 to be precise), these clients I specifically remember cold-calling from my spare bedroom when I first started my business and they have stayed with me all this time. Customer service is something we’re very good at here at Pinewood Properties, we value our customers and treat them with respect when we visit. Sometimes it can be something as simple as making sure you take your shoes off when you walk in, being respectful is key. Stacey what are you most proud of from the last 12 months? There are 29,000 agents in the UK, some have huge portfolios and have been running many years. I only launched our premium service 15 months ago and it has really taken off. I’m proud of the team for not only achieving some fantastic results but for winning some amazing awards not only at the ESTAs but also with EA Masters, Mansfield Chad, Allagents.co.uk and the Derbyshire Times Business Awards where we were highly commended in the Customer Service category. Calling Future Apprentices Words: Jason Lippitt MD of Blachford UK

An open letter to schools, parents and young people, from Jason Lippitt, Managing Director of Blachford UK.

I

t may come as a surprise to young people and their teachers, but it’s not A grades or firstclass degrees that are top of the list for many employers. I want to employ young people who have a strong work ethic, initiative and a desire to learn and get on, and I want to give them apprenticeships. I run a successful manufacturing company in Chesterfield, but I rarely get speculative approaches from young people enquiring about apprenticeship opportunities. I know that Blachford is not alone in this. This is why I am calling on all schools to position apprenticeships as golden opportunities for careers with all their pupils, regardless of how they perform academically. Apprenticeships give young people both the qualifications and a head start on the career ladder. Better still, they are university debt free. With the right attitude, there are no boundaries to career potential, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Give me a young person who is keen to learn and progress, and I will ensure the Company invests heavily in their future. I will put them on the right apprenticeship path for them and happily fund their degree if that is what they choose. Driven by the current skills shortage, the career opportunities for young people in the manufacturing and engineering sector are limitless. There’s a current shortfall of 173,000 skilled workers as 89% of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) businesses struggle to recruit. The situation is getting worse as, with Brexit on the horizon, new STEM roles are expected to double in the next 10 years. We need school leavers now to fill these roles. These school leavers are the senior engineers, managing directors and business leaders of the future. Schools, young people and companies in the STEM sector must talk to each other. Until then, neither the sector nor many young people in this country will reach their true potential.

Page 54

If we do not collectively encourage young people to consider apprenticeships alongside A levels and university, we are risking the country’s economy. The engineering sector alone contributes more than a quarter of the UK’s total GDP. This figure is likely to rise in the face of Brexit - however, with a skills shortage, this sector cannot perform to its potential. The lack of young people entering the STEM sector when they leave school is also, I believe, down to an outdated view the nation has of jobs in engineering and manufacturing. Jobs in these sectors where traditionally seen being dirty and hard. Thanks to technology, times have changed. The use of technology has also opened up more exciting and progressive career opportunities which are often hidden from view. Walk around manufacturing and engineering companies today and the shop floor is only a small part of the business. Behind Blachford’s shop floor, we have laboratories, engineering workshops, IT, an international sales team, HR and finance departments – all offering a variety of roles for aspiring young people. Don’t expect jobs like this to find you though. An internet search on a jobs’ website will not always reveal opportunities like this. You have to create them. Convince MDs like me that you could be their next employee. Be proactive and start with that speculative letter or email. I promise you it will open doors. If you’re the parent, friend, teacher or relation of a young job seeker, I urge you to share this letter with them. I believe that in life we make our own opportunities, and a career is no different.

Garden Tips

This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered. 1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your current bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded.

June Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

3.Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too! Please feel free to pop in to see us at the ‘Inspire Community Garden’ at the bottom of the public car park on Ashgate Road, Chesterfield (S40 4AA). See our website for opening times and the programme of FREE WORKSHOPS running on Sundays throughout the summer. inspirecommunitygarden.org.uk
