Intro

Hi and welcome to our summer edition. I recently attended Create Change's second day organised by Clare Gage at the Assembly Rooms in town. One fact that hit home, was that 97% of scientists now agree that human impact is the cause of climate change. From Greta Thungerg's school strikes for climate change to Extinction Rebelion's activism and Sir David Attenborourgh's awareness of plastic pollution on Blue Planet, human's impact on the climate and environment is getting increasing attention. Clare is a local mum and ceramisist, who through her membership of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) has been encouraged and supported to bring people together to form a 'People's Assembly' and put action into the hands of individuals. Toby Perkins (MP for Chesterfield) and Amanda Sarjeant (Deputy Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council) made appearances, a reassuring sign for the attendees that local council and government alike are recognising the concerns of local people on this issue. The session worked through a number of key issues, and smaller groups will continue to look at how these can be addressed. The fact that 70 Chesterfield residents are prepared to give up their Sunday to attend demonstrates the increasing concern over these issues. I'll talk more to Clare in our next edition. Enjoy this edition. Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

ell, what a busy couple of months it’s been! It was lovely to see my Jack and the Beanstalk illustration on the cover of May’s S40, and I received so many warm wishes and a couple of proposals, which I will get on to in a minute! My journey is still continuing with Penguin. I was fortunate enough to be invited to one of their corporate events at the Palladium in London last month to showcase Penguins many talents. It was so exciting, I couldn’t believe it was happening to me! As part of the ‘Write Now’ cohort, we got to sit and watch short performances showcasing Penguins up and coming talent, as well as more established writers. Authors would read a chapter of their latest book to be released and artists gave intimate interviews about the premise of their work and the books which supported it. It was mesmerising. Worldwide artists, Ai WeiWei, and authors Malorie Blackman and Bill Bryson were speakers and, of course Stormzy to cap it off! Truly exciting, overwhelming and surreal mixed into one.

Inspired and ready to work further with Penguin I have spent most of June completing my Jack and the Beanstalk project, which I submitted in rough format a whole year ago! It has come a long way since those early black and white scribbles and now, I’m proud to say, resembles a proper children’s picture book. Penguin haven’t acquired the artwork, but I am hoping to get the book printed to demonstrate my ability to complete a book to fruition and show to agents and publishers alike. Let’s hope this is the first of many! My recent project has been as a result of the S40 article in May. Anyone who knows me as a local to the area, knows me for my love of several things; my drawing, love of dungarees, my big brood (obvs!) and my love for cake… well in particular, scones! I am known to frequent the local cafes in Brampton, so I am no stranger to the best scones on Chatsworth Road, probably Derbyshire…Libby’s.

Please Mention S40 Local

Page 7

People After seeing the article Libby approached me (being a regular scone tester!) and asked if I would like to create a range of cards for the shop based around my characters of small children. Of course, I said yes! Not only was it the tempting thought of planning images over the best ‘Chubby Rascal’ in my mind but also, Libby always stocks such poignant cards, so I was honoured to be asked. So, I set to work! I have designed twenty-five cards initially in the range varying from ’New baby’ to ‘Good luck at school’, alongside children’s birthday cards for ages 1-5. I love drawing little tots so really this was no chore at all! Inspired by school assemblies (I spend my life at them!) and local sausage dogs (which I love), there is quite a range of cards to tickle your fancy. As both Libby and I are local to Brampton, I really wanted to use the local printer Minuteman Press. The team there have been so helpful and patient with my chopping and changing. Jon helped me with layouts and printed out tests to gage the card thickness required. The beauty with staying local is that visuals can be seen quickly, and you can go and see how the product will look and feel - I will definately use them again! By the time you read this, I should have (hopefully!) agreed on the finer details, and which cards to print in time to present a small window display at Libby’s on Chatsworth road. The full range will be available to buy as well as a couple of original drawings. As I am writing this, I am preparing to organise my brood so they can cope without me for the day whilst I swan off to another event! I have been invited to Penguin’s children’s book summer party hosted at the Natural History Museum London and I simply cannot wait! The party is for all the published authors and illustrators to get together for a shin dig (and networking of course!) and schmooze with the famous folk in children’s book publishing! I can’t wait to see who is there, especially if they have purple prickles all over their back (Sssssh!) eeeeeek. I am nearly halfway through my journey with Penguin and I really don’t want it to end. I am having an amazing time and finally realising my dream. Who knew I needed to have all those babies first in order to learn how to draw them well! My mum always said there was never enough books to read in the Anderson house, but there will be soon! Watch this space! Page 8

The Cake Culprit Meet The Cake Culprit Words: Paul Chapman

N

eed a freshly baked lemon drizzle cake for the weekend to impress friends? Or planning a special occasion or wedding? Then the Cake Culprit can create something truly bespoke for you. Claire Morris is the brains, baker and buttercream maker behind the business. “The Cake Culprit offers ‘a slice of rustic luxury’”, she says. But how's she got here? Baking wasn’t Claire’s first career. “I studied International Fashion Marketing at University, I loved the creative side of this and graduated after 4 years with a First-Class Honours degree.” After this Claire started working in marketing for a large catalogue business, which she enjoyed, but it did not entirely satisfy her creative streak. “Whilst working in this job, my cake journey began, completely by accident as I started baking for everyone in the office, from birthday cakes to just a Friday afternoon treat to keep up morale. I began to love baking; it became infectious as I could see how happy it made people.” After realising this was more than just a hobby, Claire took the plunge and went back to college in Sheffield to do an NVQ Level 3 in patisserie and confectionery. She worked in cafes and baked cakes for family and friends whilst at college to get by. “I was busy, and it was hard to juggle everything, but I was learning the trade firsthand, so I knew that once I’d qualified I would have the confidence and experience to set up my own business.” Claire’s first opportunity came when some friends of a friend were opening a café in Matlock. “They asked me to supply their cakes and also to work for them in the café. This was a great opportunity as it enabled me to see for myself customers responses to what I was creating.” Why the name The Cake Culprit? Claire says this came from wanting something unique, that stood out. “It was an amalgamation of the main product offered being cake and the idea of being ‘guilty’ of creating something wonderful that’s a bit naughty.” Small independent businesses have always been a part of Claire’s life from being a small child her dad is Ian Morris of Ian Morris Antiques and Page 20

her mum is Libby Morris, owner of Libby’s on Chatsworth Road. Starting her own business seemed inevitable. Supporting local people and small businesses has always been something Claire has been passionate about, “All my branding has been lovingly created by local illustrator Sally Anderson (IG - @sallygingerillustration), and I have fabulous creative assistance from one of my best friends I’ve known since school, Jessica Webster-Gray (IG – @livingonthebrook).” After struggling with allergies for most of her life Claire experimented with alternative ingredients in baking after undertaking various exclusion diets herself. “This experimentation gave me the understanding of the needs of today’s complex dietary environment. I’ve developed recipes to suit gluten and dairy free diets as well as vegans, all of which are very popular at the moment. Approximately half of my business is made up of special dietary cakes, with the other half good old conventional ones.” All the cakes that leave Cake Culprit HQ are baked from scratch with quality ingredients. Flavour is something Claire is passionate about. “I try and develop new flavours on a monthly basis, but sometimes you just can’t beat the traditional flavours with a twist.” Over the last year, Claire has broadened her business to create celebration cakes including wedding, christening and birthday cakes. “There is nothing more satisfying than receiving photos of a happy bride and groom or birthday boy or girl tucking into one of my cakes.” Claire’s cakes are getting rave reviews and her approach of quality over quantity is paying off, so demand is already high. Drop Claire an email if you need a cake for an up and coming celebration but get in there quick…. If she needs anyone to try The Cake Culprit’s cakes, for quality control purposes… I’m always up for that role. The Cake Culprit Walton, Chesterfield

Crooked Spire Cafe. Perth. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Crooked Spire Cafe, Perth

When Chesterfield resident Jonathan Strutt emigrated to Australia over ten years ago, he thought he may never set eyes on the Crooked Spire again! So, imagine his surprise, when strolling through Perth he spotted the 'Crooked Spire Cafe'. Jonathan is Simon's cousin (S41 Local Editor) and messaged him the same day to say 'hey, have I got a story for you'. Simon got in touch with the cafe's owner Mike Matich to find out more... that's Mike and some of his team on the far left.

Do you know the history of the Crooked Spire?

How did you hear about the Crooked Spire?

You have some great art on the walls, have you any Chesterfield based artists on display?

When we were getting ready to start building the cafe, in March 2015, a good friend of mine was travelling through Chesterfield and posted this amazing picture of the Crooked Spire. I commented that the name would be perfect for a pub, he replied “or maybe a coffee house”. And that’s how it happened:) I also loved the idea that due to a series of mistakes there is now a building that is a beautiful piece of art. I love the idea that we are all artists and out of a mess can come something beautiful. Do you have any artwork of the Crooked Spire on display? If not, I am sure we could send you some? We have a poster with a picture of the spire with a story of its origin. Have you ever had anyone in from Chesterfield, before my cousin? I’ve had a few and they love the story and the reminder of home. We get called the Crooked Squire and the Crooked Spider too, which always gives me a smile. The café looks pretty cool on the website, what can we expect if we were to pay you a visit? It really has a community vibe; we want everyone to feel not just welcome but like it is their place too. Where everyone is included. You can also expect brilliant coffee and food. We were lucky enough to receive two awards last year, Customer Service of the Year Award and Small Business Of the Year in the Chamber of Commerce Awards. Please Mention S40 Local

I believe I do. (ED: For those that don't, the most reliable story is that the black death killed off so many skilled workers that when the spire was constructed, the carpenters were unskilled and used untreated timbers, which twisted and warped as they dried out... it definitely wasn't the result of the spire bending down to take a look when a virgin got married in the church!)

No Chesterfield artists but I am open to them. We also have some well used Chesterfield couches as a nod to the home of the original Crooked Spire. Have you ever been to Chesterfield and visited the Crooked Spire? The real one, in Chesterfield, obviously! I have never been, but it is on my bucket list now. We have what seems like hundreds of kids at the moment (five, to be precise), with our youngest only three and travel can be be a bit hard. But I’m definitely looking forward to a visit soon. If you are ever in Perth and fancy calling in for a coffee, the Crooked Spire Coffee & Art House can be found at the address below. Crooked Spire Coffee & Art House 71 Victoria St Midland WA 6056 Australia Look out for Paul and I wearing 'Crooked Spire Cafe' T Shirts at some point soon, thanks to the team at Perth.

Robert Nixon Betts

What influences a man to take pictures? Words: Paul Chapman Images: Robert Nixon Betts

R

obert Nixon Betts’ photos have been a regular feature of the S40 Local gardening pages for quite some time. He started sending photos to me out of the blue and we’ve built up a routine and exchanged short emails, so I recently suggested we meet up so I could find out a little bit more about him. Little did I know, that by using his photos S40 Local had also been helping Robert to build his confidence and find an outlet that’s been so important to him. Robert lives in Walton - you wouldn’t know to look at him, but he struggles with self-confidence and many of the day-to-day interactions most of us take for granted. Robert has been sharing photos he takes with me for some time and we regularly feature his pictures of flowers, plants or the insects that are attracted to the flowers on our garden tips page, they are a timely reminder of what’s happening outside. I met Robert for a coffee at St Thomas’ and he explained, “I came to Chesterfield from Grimsby as a young lad and have always suffered with my selfconfidence. I tend to shy away and back off from any situation I’m not comfortable with, it can lead to me being extremely nervous.” It transpired that meeting with me today at St Thomas’ had taken some doing. “Things people have no problem with, meeting a new contact or person or going somewhere for the first time, I find extremely stressful”, he added. In the past he’s avoided such things, but just recently he’s started putting himself into uncomfortable situations he would have previously avoided. Each situation is about overcoming his worries and learning to cope with more and more of life’s everyday tasks. Robert simply likes to take photos. “It’s part of my coping mechanism, it removes some of the stress, but I do also find it stressful at the same

Page 30

time. Remembering the functions of the camera is difficult, I often forget how to do certain things” he explains. “I try to have the camera in manual mode and not let it make the decisions for me. This approach works OK 90% of the time but I do drop back to auto mode when needed”, perhaps a perfect illustration of the simple becoming difficult for him. However, Robert went onto explain how his use of the camera has given him a way to escape. “Through sending the photos to S40 Local, it’s resulted in my joining Sheffield Photographic Society. They’ve been amazing, it’s been great to be welcomed by the group and it’s doing wonders for my confidence”, Robert smiles, happily. Attending the group involves a bus ride out to Sheffield, Robert gets himself there and back and feels like one of the group. He points out that the members have been so supportive, and it’s created an environment he feels comfortable and secure in. “I wouldn’t have even thought about doing something like this a couple of years ago”, he adds. I asked what is it about photography he really likes? “I just enjoy the experience, I don’t really have a favourite picture, it’s all about the process of taking the photograph.” Robert has recently bought a wide-angle lens for his main camera and will be experimenting with it, all part of the learning process. He recently did a part-time photography course at Chesterfield College and, although he enjoyed the course, he wasn’t happy with the darkroom experience. To finish off our chat I asked about his inspirations? “Villager Jim and I really enjoy taking photos around Whitby”, Robert replied. “I’d love to produce some products... pictures, a range of cards, I do give my pictures to friends and neighbours, and people are appreciative”. Thanks to Robert for sending in the pictures each edition and who knows, I might be letting you know about his range of cards.

Mark Travers conquers Loads Road Everesting Race Words: Paul Chapman Images: Dawn Queen Photography

O

n Saturday 28 June, the hottest day of the year so far, I received a call from my neighbour Richard, from The Bulls Head in Holymoorside, saying that someone was Everesting Loads Road. I popped up, where I witnessed Mark Travers, about four repetitions from completing the task, chatting with people and looking very relaxed. Mark completed the challenge and joined an elite club of cyclists… with 165 miles, 46 rides up (and down) Loads Road, and 8,992m or 29,501feet of vertical ascent under his belt in 21 hours 41 min… and all because he bought a new bike! I also contacted Adrian Beckett, who is still planning to attempt this same feat on 2 August, to break to news to him. He was surprisingly relaxed about the news… and has since met up with Mark who’s shared top tips and has offered to ride with Adrian through the night to support him. Mark laughed, “I’ve been filling up on cake since finishing, so I’ve got a few calories to burn!” I also met Mark the week after his ride. So, a reminder of the rules; no time limit, as many breaks as you like, but no sleep, same hill up and down. Mark, from Hasland, has cycled all his life and rides with Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club. At 52 years old, he realises he’s probably not going to get any faster, but wants to stay active and still loves riding. His favourite pursuit is hill-climbing, and he had been on the lookout for a new bike for this. So the new bike… Mark had ordered a new Bianchi… but he spotted a special edition frame to celebrate Marko Pantani’s Giro d’Italia stage victory. He got up early and the next morning was hammering on JE James’ door at opening time to see if he could cancel his order and get his hands on a Bianchi, Pantani Specialissima! “These things are so special” explained Mark “you almost have to pass an interview with Bianchi to get one.” He laughs. “The strange

Page 34

thing is, I made it through and took delivery of the only frame to come to the UK in my size. The bike, built up, weighs in at just over 6kg … that’s 13 bags of sugar.” This bike was so special to Mark that he wanted to do something to celebrate. Marks works at R82, a company who manufacture seating, standing and walking aids for disabled children. “We work closely with a charity, New Life, so it was a sensible fit to do something for them, and combine my celebratory challenge, with raising some money for them.” “I could have done a 100 mile ride but decided that wasn’t tough enough. The children supported by New Life are on a tough journey, I felt I needed to do something equally challenging, and that’s how I got to the Everesting idea.” The attempt started at 11pm Friday 27 June. “I realised very early on, that on a ride like this, you never really get warmed up. It was quite a cold night with clear skies, and once you reach the top of the climb you are turning around, plummeting back down the hill at 40 to 50mph, and any warmth you’ve built up is lost. Colin Williams rode through the night with me, I needed someone to make sure I stayed safe.” Mark’s target was 18 hours (most people achieve an Everest attempt in under 24 hours), he’d planned 8 stops of 15 minutes, but as mentioned, the Saturday was the warmest day of the year so far. “As people started turning up to ride with me, my schedule started to slip a bit.” “When I hit 20,000 feet of climbing, I started to feel the first signs of heat stroke. My friend Katy supported me, and between 1 and 3pm as I was struggling to eat or drink. Katy whisked up a mixture of electrolyte tablets and carbohydrate drink, which I think got me through the hottest part of the day. The temperature hit 35.8C (96.5F) and on each climb I was just focusing on that single rep, not the overall goal.

www.s40local.co.uk

Fundraising links wonderful.org/fundraiser/ markseverestingchallenge justgiving.com/fundraising/Beckett-Everesting

“I got really emotional on one rep, my mind telling my body to go to sleep, I had a wobble and bit of a scare, but fortunately this woke me, and I got through it. “At 4pm, the temperature dropped by a degree. It doesn’t sound much, but it made a massive difference, and it coincided with me spotting mates from the Spire Club returning back home from their days ride. They came towards me across from Beeley and my spirits lifted. Andy Hicklin, Ian Johnson, Bryan Harrison and Stuart Knight, from the club, then rode with me.” “Andy said to me that the last two reps will be easy. I’ve no idea how he knew but he was spot on. The last rep felt really easy, I felt like attacking it! I finished at The Lamb at 8:30pm to be a greeted by a sizeable crowd. “I was elated I’d done it and I’m thrilled to appear in the everesting.cc/hall-of-fame where 3,738 Everestings have taken place (ED: At the time of writing) across the world in the 20 years it’s been a thing.” Undeterred by Mark’s success Adrian Becket from Brookside, will be attempting to Everest Loads Road starting on 2 Aug to raise funds for Meningitis Now, after suffering from the illness. See our website or last month's edition, if you missed it, to find out more. Mark’s advice to Adrian: • Keep an eye on the wind direction - a head wind makes 1.5 minutes difference to each rep. and has been the main reason people haven’t completed the challenge in the past… I got lucky with the wind direction. • Have a backup plan and be prepared to adapt it. • Ride with someone through the night.

• Good lights are essential for the descent at night. So, I asked Mark… would you do it again? “I suspect I probably would”, he said with a laugh!

Advertorial

"Who would have thought that Kip could have helped my granddaughter at her Beaver Scouts’ colony?" By Alison's Grandmother When I took my eight-year-old granddaughter along to Kip some months ago, it was because she had been lacking in confidence and ability at school, and anticipating herself as a failure in her future. My neighbour’s child had been going to Kip for a while, so I thought it time to give it a go for Alison too.

volunteering to go first on occasion. Now Beavers, as you will know, is a mixed age range with both boys and girls all from a variety of schools. It is a real mixing pot of the community. Initially, Alison hung out with the couple of children she knew from her school, but recently she has really branched out much more.

We were pleasantly surprised at how thorough the assessment of her reading, spelling and maths was, and Jo really understood Alison’s fear of being behind at school and her reluctance to get something wrong. Anyway, now seven months later and her end-of-term assessment shows she has increased her reading by two years, her spelling by one year and, most wonderful of all, her maths by one year as well. It seems we are gaining on the challenges and she is improving faster than ever, so we will be giving Kip another go next term.

The highlight for all of us, and we are so proud of her, was when she went to a recent Group Scout Camp and stayed for her first overnight stay with the other Beavers. She coped so well, and the Beaver leader told us she was brilliant, helping to settle some of the less confident children as well during the sleepover. She loved it all and was beaming with happiness when we collected her, full of stories of what she had done, like archery, making dens in the woods and suchlike.

What we hadn’t appreciated was the fundamental changes we have seen in Alison, in her confidence and willingness to join in more, even with children she hardly knows. My husband has been a long-time Scout Leader, so we enrolled Alison in Beavers and, although she always said she liked going, her Beaver leader did say she was finding the rough-and-tumble a bit much, and could be a bit stressed at times and quite withdrawn. The scouting organisation is very good at integrating children with all backgrounds and abilities, so we weren’t worried. However, what we have seen, and her Beaver leader also commented on it as well, was how as Alison’s academic levels have grown, so has her confidence in herself, and she has begun to take part more in the activities, even

Who would have foreseen that the timid little girl who went to Kip feeling a failure has now become a confident chatty child with a ‘can do’ attitude to everything in life, including her school work? Her schoolteachers have commented too. For us, it is a massive ‘Thank you‘ to Kip and Alison’s tutor, Sarah.

Take your child along to Jo for some Kip sessions and increase their academic ability but, most importantly, their confidence and belief in themselves. You can’t lose! Call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 for an assessment now!

An Inspirational Young Man Joshua Tann Words & Image: Paul Chapman

2280 days without a day off sick - can’t image it? Well, that’s what Joshua Tann at Brookfield has achieved. There are 190 days in the UK school year and 12 years from infants to the end of year 11, 2280 days in total or six and a quarter years, if you did them end to end with no weekends! So how is it that Joshua has managed this? “I love to learn, reading a wide genre of books, trying to eat a healthy diet, I simply love to come into school. This, together with the support and encouragement of my family and the teaching staff at school, have helped to make it achievable.” How does it feel to have achieved this feat? “It’s a great sense of achievement; I can’t help but feel a sense of pride associated with coming into school each day to learn.” “We’re immensely proud of his achievement”, add Jenny and Richard, Joshua’s parents. “His grandfather was Phil Johnson of Tinny Johnson's on Chatsworth Road. His father, Richard and grandfather, Phil, alike have both worked hard and diligently at the much-loved ironmongers.” Has the achievement been celebrated in school? “I’ve had a presentation made at my leavers assembly for which I was very thankful, and The Derbyshire Times have also made a feature of my achievement.” Mr Davey, form teacher: “Joshua was presented with an award for his attendance at the school leavers assembly, and his strong attendance will ensure he makes the most of his opportunities. There is a strong correlation between attendance and performance. “Future employers would look for this and, if he ends up running his own business, he’ll be setting a great example. “Joshua is mature beyond his years and it’s been a pleasure to teach him.” Headteacher, Keith Hirst, said “This is a fantastic achievement by Joshua and everyone at Brookfield is very proud of him. Attendance is vitally important for anyone if they are to achieve their potential, both at school and Page 42

beyond. Joshua and his parents can rightly be very proud of this accomplishment.” Joshua will start at Chesterfield College in September where he’ll undertake a two-year extended level three diploma in Business. "I have chosen this course to further my entrepreneurial ambition to open a local establishment in the future. My inspiration derives from my family' s tradition for business acumen." Is there a secret to your attendance? “Not really, you might say I’ve just been a bit lucky, I have had illnesses, thankfully short, and they’ve typically hit me at the weekend or holidays.” There must have been some days when you wanted to pull the duvet up and not go in? “No, not at all, I’m usually the first in the tutor room and eager to learn.” Joshua has played in the chess club, which has led to him competing at national competitions and was the Derbyshire Champion in 2016, 2018 and 2019 for his age. It’s the start of a new academic year in a few weeks, what advice would Joshua give anyone coming into Brookfield for the first time? “You only have one chance at education, make it worthwhile. Your future depends on it, so make the most of it and enjoy it.” Away from school, Joshua is a young leader at 3rd Brampton Scout Group, has achieved The Chief Scout Gold Award and completed The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award while at school. He plays crown green bowls at Robinson Bowls club at Walton Dam and is a keen golfer, playing at Stanedge.

Wellbeing

The Benefits of Yoga

Five years ago, whilst moving to a new house, I ‘put me back out’ incorrectly lifting a wardrobe out of the back of a van on my own! If only I'd paid attention during the manual handling course at work! At the time, I felt like I would never walk without pain again, let alone play competitive sport - I use the word 'competitive' lightly as I am now over 40! A friend of mine mentioned they did a similar thing some time ago and after practicing yoga they are, pretty much, as good as new. I took their advice and, childcare permitting, I can once again compete at sport. So, what is yoga and why should you do it?

Words: Simon Paterson

Yoga originated in India around 5,000 years ago. Over the years it has been adapted to suit all ages and levels of physicality, and is commonplace in leisure centres, schools, hospitals, community centres and homes around the world. But what is it and why is it so good for you? Yoga is a form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. It comprises of a series of movements and holding poses whilst regulating breathing, which naturally instils calm in the mind. There is scientific evidence to suggest that practicing yoga on a regular basis is beneficial for; stress reduction, anxiety levels, inflammation reduction, heart health, quality of life, depression, chronic pain, sleep quality, flexibility and balance, migraines, breathing, strength and eating habits. The list is endless! You can start yoga at any age, and if you went to a club you would see classes being run with primary school students to pensioners in their 70s and beyond! There are yoga classes for every age and group. You don’t have to be fit or flexible to take up yoga, and some classes are chair-based! Yoga has had a huge impact on my quality of life. I recommend you find the time to practice yoga just a few times a week and it may be enough to make a positive difference to your mental and physical health - it definitely has mine. PS: The picture is not me! Page 46

iDeal Carpets new range of www.chesterfieldcarpets.com Project Flooring. 131 Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield, S40 2AP

In a world where brands become so well known, it’s not uncommon for the brand to replace ‘the Offer applies carpetsactually over £11.99M². T&C’s apply. thing’. AVAILABLE HooverNOW for instance, we toare vacuuming, but the brand has become ‘the thing’. *

“It’s like that here for me,” says Kevin Howarth, of Ideal Carpets on Chatsworth Road. “Certain flooring brands have become so large they dominate when actually there are some great alternatives. Project Floors, for example, provide fantastic Luxury Vinyl Tiles. A German brand, it has the usual high quality we come to expect from Germany, it’s made in Germany and not in China like many of the competitors' products and it really is more than equivalent to some of the more wellknown brands.” Kevin has now been at the 131 Chatsworth Road development for eight years, and set up on his own after a life in carpets and flooring, working for the large retail chains. “I had a wealth of experience and contacts so the transition wasn’t too painful, although what I never expected was how much more time I’d have at home, I used to travel a lot, and how much I’d feel like part of the community.” “You build relationships when your customers are nearly all local. Do a good job and people recommend you to family, to friends and word starts to spread.

Page 48

“It’s also nice to be away from the constant ‘offer syndrome’, where no one ever knows the true price for a product. I keep my prices keen all year round, offer free grippers, door bars and underlay etc on products above a certain price. It keeps things simple.” Kevin has also started offering an uplift service, where, for a small fee, his installers will remove your old flooring and take away all the rubbish before installing your new floor. Kevin is looking forward to a brief respite over August before people start on the prep for Christmas. “September is a busy period as people get their holidays out of the way and start thinking about refreshing things for Christmas and the New Year, get the room decorated and a new floor down.” If you are looking for new flooring there is a wide selection on display in the showroom, including luxury vinyl tiles, hard flooring, laminate, engineered and real wood flooring plus a huge range or carpets… and if you do call in, tell him you saw him in S40 Local! iDeal Carpets 131 Chatsworth Road Chesterfield S40 2AP FB: iDealCarpetsChesterfieldDerbyshire www.chesterfieldcarpets.com

Garden Tips

Summer Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

• Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted, they usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them, but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. • Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. • Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over, and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. • Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. • If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. • Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. • Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. • Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... • Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.

Music

Chesterfield Rocks

The County Music Bar gig in support of Musicians Against Homelessness. Words: Simon Paterson

I popped into The County Music Bar in Chesterfield to find out what Phil, the new owner, had been up to with the venue and to catch up about some events. I was greeted by the legendary Hendrix the dog; he looks a bit like a wolf. (I wasn’t scared at all.) The place looks fantastic - with some tweaks and the addition of a stage it’s a great music venue for up-and-coming bands. The artwork is amazing, and the feel of the bar is very cool! The County Music Bar have lots of great events coming up but there was one event that really intrigued us. I was lucky enough to meet with the event organiser, Louise, and she told us all about what she has in store and the charity she represents. "The Musicians Against Homelessness charity is a nationwide charity which directs funds into Crisis, aiding many homeless people to gain the tools to get back into work and tackling the problem at an MP level. The charity founder is a lady called Emma Rule and the patron is Alan McGee." The founder, Emma, arranges some major events with bands such as Cast, Dodgy and The Happy Mondays, but is keen for people to get involved in the local area. Emma and her team are aiming to bring the events to local communities and get Derbyshire’s up-and-coming bands on board. Louise is the driving force behind the Chesterfield events and volunteers her time on top of her busy workload as a Project Manager. "I am very lucky that The County Music Bar is helping the charity by providing a free venue. We have some great bands such as The Rooves, Alpaca Factory and Marvin’s Revenge. I really want to help get this charity on the map in Chesterfield as well as getting young talent interested in playing. The event not only supports the charity but also brings the community together to support some local talent." Musicians Against Homelessness takes place on the 28th September at 12pm, and is one not to be missed! At only a fiver on the door, it’s a bargain! The event has bands playing throughout the day, some great beers on tap and the epic Pizza Pi will be on site to cater to your hunger needs. You can purchase tickets from Wegottickets.com and be sure to check out their Facebook page for updates. County Music Bar 3 Saltergate, Chesterfield S40 1JS
