NOVEMBER COPY DATE FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER

Intro

Hi and welcome to our Autumn edition.

What struck me this month is how much we care about what we write at S40 Local. We want to share info and keep people up-to-date with things happening locally, we also want to encourage people to support local business and also consider the impact of purchases.

It's difficult sometimes to get the balance right - to give some facts, to be honest, to maintain integrity whilst at the same time trying not to promote a personal views. This month we have a follow up article on Create Change Chesterfield, a hard one to reach a point of balance.

I never expected when I set off trying to sell a few adverts that I'd end up having to think so carefully about my words! Last mention of Everesting ... congrats to Adrian Beckett who achieved his Everesting challenge on Loads Road in August. His 48 reps of took him 17 hours 59 minutes, covering 265km and climbing 9137m. Thanks to all who donated to his cause, Meningitis Now (justgiving.com/fundraising/beckett-everesting).

Congratulations to Willow from Newbold who was lucky enough to win the £20 voucher from Penk Insurance's Spot The Difference competition. Thanks to all who entered, our post bag was heaving that week! Enjoy this edition ... it doesn't seem right that we've only two more editions until Christmas! So we'll be starting the shop local gift guide next month. Paul.

Environment

Create Change Chesterfield We follow up on our promise to bring you more and chat to a local expert. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Bottle & Thyme

I

n the last edition our introduction talked briefly about the Create Change workshops organised by Clare Gage that took place in July, and we promised to bring you an update. One of the outputs was to provide more clarity and information to help people better understand the facts and science around climate change and to help people who want to act.

I’m meeting Emma Knight-Strong to find out more. Emma is a Sustainability Coach with over 10 years' experience. Her business, Green Arch Consulting, helps businesses work with the environment to deliver more sustainable and resilient products and services. Her professional role is to help businesses to be climate resilient, no matter the size and sector - and to help businesses fully understand their dependencies, map the risks and target the opportunities. We’re tapping in on Emma’s knowledge to help readers become more climate aware. But why should we care? “Environmental impact is not just climate change, it’s a whole host of consumption and lifestyle impacts that are damaging the planet, including how we feed everyone, how we deal with waste, how we run our businesses, build houses and offices, and how we shop. For those who want to know more about it, the information out there can feel quite overwhelming and complicated.

Page 6

“Climate change is causing increasingly strange weather patterns around the world and impacting business supply chains. Modern supply chains rely on efficiency measures such as ‘just in time’ ordering to avoid costs associated with storing and stock piling. This means weather events elsewhere in the world may have impacts on business which weren’t predicted. A hurricane or tsunami in a different country is reported as being devastating to local communities,

and it is, but it also has big knock-on effects to businesses around the world. They have a very real effect on the price and the availability of the things we buy. “For example, in 2017 Southern Spain had too much rain at the ‘wrong time of year’, and the price of courgettes went up by 60% ... some might say that’s no bad thing, but food prices are very sensitive to weather as you can imagine!

“On top of weather issues, intensive farming damages the soil, and we’re now seeing the impact of poor soils on food productivity and prices. The ground becomes less productive, and a shortage in crops makes them more expensive - it affects us all. “In 2011, floods in Thailand destroyed factories where hard disk drives were made, this led to supply issues across the world and 10,000 people worldwide in computer manufacturing lost their jobs.

“Weather change across the world: droughts, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, etc, all impact food production and supply chains, and affect us, wherever we are.” If you could encourage people to take action, where would you start? “One of the main all-encompassing sustainability principles is to follow the waste/resource hierarchy: REFUSE (avoid), REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, in that priority order. Thinking about what you buy and the waste it generates with ‘do I need this?’ and, where possible, avoiding the purchase in the first place. “And there are, of course, more sustainable ways to buy – for example, charity shops are recycling pre-loved items and reducing landfill as well as supporting communities.”

For businesses, Emma encourages reinforcing positive behaviours by not asking the customer whether they want a bag or straw etc… and definitely not just providing

Environment one (even paper is a valuable resource). “If businesses assume people don’t want additional packaging but still happily provide it if asked, use will naturally reduce, as would business costs. It’s simply switching the conversation to apply the resource hierarchy”, says Emma. A second focus for Emma would be to encourage people to consider reducing consumption of red meat. “Red meat is an issue for the environment. Farming animals requires a lot of water, land and food and that’s before you get to the point where you need to transport the animal for slaughtering and processing. This is a big deal environmentally. So, if you want to make an impact consider ways to reduce your consumption of red meat. Meat Free Mondays was a popular campaign started in 2009 by Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney that gives a focus to your changes.” Reasons to be optimistic “I’ve worked in this industry for a decade and been interested since I was eight, when I decided I wanted to be David Attenborough. Until four or five years ago, people didn’t understand what I did, but in the last four years the scale and pace of change has been unprecedented. People want to talk to me about what they can do, people want to know the facts and are inspired to do more. “The Paris agreement is a global agreement, signed by all 195 United Nations countries, to limit global warming to 2 degrees above historical average, and preferably 1.5 degrees. A key deciding factor in driving this agreement was that, for the first time, there was significant lobbying from businesses and other influencers. Leonardo DiCaprio, with his 19.2 million followers on Twitter, is consistently ranked as a top climate influencer. Pope Francis’ papal encyclical letter, “Laudato Si” called on the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics to join the fight against climate change. These things, and many more, sent shockwaves out in to the wider business and political community that had, up until that point, really seen the climate change debate as one for policy makers and scientists. “The BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, Financial Times, Sky and others have accepted that climate change is real. In the interest of balance, they might discuss the best actions to improve the situation, but will no longer Page 8

have the ‘is it happening?’ debate - they've accepted the scientific community view.

“The David Attenborough effect in 2017 drove public involvement and interest to a new level. Ten years ago, David Attenborough decided he had witnessed with his own eyes, enough evidence to convince him that humans impact on the planet was detrimental, at which point he decided to put his considerable influence behind communicating that change. In that, he has been highly successful and can be credited with driving a huge degree of public awareness and governmental policy change. “The carrier bag tax has reduced carrier bag consumption by 86% since it was introduced.”

“It’s not all as bad as the headlines. Not many will be aware, but even when/if Donald Trump takes the US out of the Paris Agreement on climate change, ten US states have already signed a declaration to say they will follow the Paris Agreement anyway (www.wearestillin.com). “ALBERT has been massive! www. wearealbert.org is a scheme administered by BAFTA, which works to support the TV and film industry to broadcast information about climate change. In a similar way that TV and film changed perception of on-screen smoking and drink driving, the scheme makes broadcasting and depicting people being sustainable as natural and normal - which is an exciting and inspiring change.

“Change is happening, and people are taking positive action. I’d just encourage more people to get involved and to make small incremental changes, to change the way they live and consume. Only by making these changes will individuals drive business and government action. “For someone who’s passionate about the planet, climate and environment, the step change I’ve seen in public opinion and interest has been phenomenal, I’m excited and optimistic and want to continue to support businesses who want to do more.”

Stanedge Golf Club Changing the Accessibility of Golf

Words: Fame Tate (Director of Stanedge Golf Club)

Stanedge Golf Club is open to the public for play under the new ownership of Fame Tate, PGA Professional and former Ladies European Tour and Asian Tour player.

Since taking over the club in February 2019, Fame and her team have totally transformed the club. Fame has set out a vision to make the club an accessible, affordable, family friendly, warm and welcoming place where people of all ages, gender and backgrounds can come and enjoy the golf course and socialise in the clubhouse.

Located in the delightful Peak District of Derbyshire, Stanedge Golf Course is a beautiful and well maintained 10 hole moorland/parkland course. It provides idyllic and sensational views stretching over four counties. The course suits all levels of ability with an engaging and varied test of golf, with three par 3s, six par 4s and one par 5. The course layout provides a variety of options and loops to play as many holes as you wish without ever being too far away from the clubhouse. A round of 9 holes at Stanedge should not take more than a couple of hours but if you are constrained for time, you can pay for 3 holes £4 or 6 holes £7. Equipment and trolley hire is also available.

The Clubhouse offers food 7 days a week. Their breakfasts are hugely popular with members and visitors, with all of their ingredients are locally sourced from Highfield Farm Shop. The fully licensed bar offers a wide array of drinks including nespresso coffee, teapigs, artisan gins plus free wi-fi for their members and guests.

For those who would like membership there are some fantastic offers such as Family Membership (Husband, Wife & Children U17) for £950, for a family of four this equates to less than £20 per month per individual. Full Adult Membership is £580 per annum or £50 per month. 18 to 35 Membership is £250 per annum or £25 per month. The club is also keen to grow Junior Golf and introduce young players to the game - at £50 per year this is less than £1 per week, with no day or time restrictions.

In addition to Fame giving lessons at the club, she is joined by her colleague and PGA Master Professional, Peter Ball. Between the two of them, they have a wealth of expertise and knowledge, providing a number of different weekly group and individual coaching initiatives to suit every age and ability. Fame said: “I am determined to make Stanedge Golf Club to be the best it can possibly be for its members and visitors, and myself and my team will do everything that we can to achieve this. You don’t have to be a golfer or a member to come to the club, everyone will always be welcomed by our friendly team and it is a super facility to come and enjoy the scenic views and have some home cooked food.” To find out more information please visit: www.stanedgegolfclub.co.uk

Everyone

has questions This is your opportunity to explore the meaning of life

Exploring is good. We’re built for it. Explore more about life, faith and meaning with Alpha. Alpha is a series of sessions over ten weeks that give people a great opportunity to explore what Christians believe, in a relaxed, informal setting. We look at key themes of Christian faith, such as who Jesus is, why he died on the Cross, what faith is and why it’s important. We also explore those dimensions of Christian faith that connect directly with our personal experiences of life, such as suffering, money and possessions, sin, temptation and addictions, and thinking about how we can make the most of our lives. St John’s runs Alpha every year and all who come find it enjoyable and stimulating. This is what one person who came on the last course said:

“... a huge thank you for leading Alpha in such an inspirational way. I learnt so much more about my own journey with God and do genuinely feel that the “emptiness” I had been experiencing has indeed been filled …! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and sharing experiences...” Our next Alpha begins with an open event at St. John's when we will hold a BBQ and show the introductory session 1 of the new Alpha series. This will be at 7:15pm on Tuesday 17th September 2019. The whole course runs from 7:15pm to 9:15pm for ten Tuesdays. Meet new people, enjoy a meal, ask your questions and share your views as we explore the meaning of life. Book your place with the office now.

SOMETHINGNEW September is the month when students of all ages are off to school/college/university – some are returning and some are going for the very first time. It is a very exciting time, but can also be a little bit daunting, something to remember in our prayers. For those of us no longer in education, whatever age, September can be a time to try something new for ourselves. An opportunity for a fresh start, a new venture, a learning opportunity or simply something to enjoy and relax with. At St John’s there are many opportunities to try something new in your community – friendship groups, young people’s events, exercise and dance classes, baby massage, social singing for those living with dementia, concerts and

Ingmans The Boutique Store for Gentlemen Words: Paul Chapman

ndrew Ingman, from Ingmans cobblers, footwear and clothing boutique, is well known in Chesterfield. He’s been repairing shoes here for 33 years. In keeping with an environmental ethos, their products are high quality, designed to last – no throwaway fashion here, and when your footwear gets worn or needs reviving, they’ll provide a highquality repair, to bring them back to life. Check out their website, www.ingmans.co.uk, for a video showing what they can do. You know you’re getting high quality when you’re visiting a cobbler who’s been acknowledged by one of the finest English Shoemakers, Barkers of Earls Barton Northampton, for their art – “Barkers see us as great representatives for their brand, we stock their shoes and we’re a trusted repair shop for them”. The quality of the footwear particularly will no doubt cost more initially, but it’s about being able to reduce the amount you buy, reducing your environmental impact, your product miles, supporting local. Many of the products are UK brands, Andrew and his team are all local, so the income stays in the local economy. His design work is by Kelly at 13 Bends Design (who pens our cartoons), “keeping things local is important” he stresses. Ingmans is based on Burlington Street, in one of the original Burton stores, a gentlemen’s outfitters, so it seems a fitting that Ingmans stock a fantastic collection of clothing; gent’s suits, shirts, t-shirts, polos, wax jackets, jeans, alongside their ladies' and gents' shoes. “It might be easier to say that the only thing we don’t sell is underwear”, jokes Andy. They also stock luxury brands of handmade leather products. Cobb England, produce some of the finest wallets, belts, luggage you’ll find, “these products are designed to last a lifetime and made upstairs, you’ll struggle to find better craftsmanship anywhere”, says Andy. You can buy your Barkers, Loakes, Trickers and Church’s footwear and clothing UK brands such as Gibson, Guide London plus some fine European brand such as Mac jeans… plus of course their own signature Ingmans range of leather goods. “Joseph Cheaney & Sons of London recently commissioned a handmade and hand-stitched briefcase, that is sold from their flagship store on Jermyn Street. We’re super proud of what we’ve done for them.” I plan to catch up with Andy for a more in-depth chat about the business in the next edition, but in the meantime, call into 14-16 Burlington Street for a browse and to reacquaint yourself with a traditional cobbler and quality outfitters. www.s40local.co.uk

Environment

Green Bottles... and Thyme Words: Paul Chapman

W

e know Bottle and Thyme for it's good food, friendly team and relaxed atmosphere, but this young dynamic lot are passionate about looking after the planet and over the last six months have been working towards delivering the experience you’re used to, but in a more sustainable way. I went along to meet Gavin Grainger over a cup of their ethical coffee, to see how they’re approaching things.

“The waste we generate and the impact we have is something that’s been playing on our mind for some time, so we’ve decided to work towards going green and zerowaste” says Gavin. There’s a flyer in the shop that you can pick which explains more about it.

“I know many businesses are starting on this journey and an easy win on the plastic front has been to swap straws, but for me it’s about doing more than that and changing our business ethos. “We’ve been looking at everything we do, starting from a zero waste perspective… we’ve been looking at every item that comes through the door, and more importantly, everything that goes out the door!”

“Across a year, we estimated we produce 220,000 litres of waste just from our business. So, we’ve started making huge changes. The four frequently referred to principles are REFUSE (unnecessary packaging), REDUCE (food wastage), REUSE (any containers we do have get put to use to store other things) and RECYCLE (using commercial composting and unavoidable waste and recycling glass, cardboard, paper and plastic). We no longer have a grey waste bin – everything is being reduced or gets recycled.” Page 22

Gavin explains “We’re looking at every piece of single-use plastic. Our straws are PLA, which is made from renewable biomas, but is more robust than paper paper breaks down too quickly in drinks so we need something that lasts until the last sip” explains Gav. “These still need to be commercially composted and we’re doing that. We’re making takeaway cups available and also containers, so if you can’t finish everything on your plate, you can take it home.

“Some things are more difficult. Our steaks are vac-packed due to food hygiene standards, we can’t do anything about that immediately but over time we’ve hoping to find a solution. Our organic veg is delivered in boxes that are returned and reused” explains Gav. With food waste they are monitoring what people return, what’s left on plates, and acting accordingly and making changes.

Fruit and veg is ordered daily to reduce waste and everything is tightly controlled so they only have what they need. Unfortunately, there is a small amount of leftover food which has to go somewhere - this goes into food waste and is commercially composted along with straws and cup lids, etc. “There is virtually nothing left each day; some leftover foods are used in soups etc but each day there is little to use”, adds Gavin.

“Bottle and Thyme source all organic fruit and vegetables. The lack of pesticides results in more sustainable soil, treated soils need long periods to recover. I eat organic at home so I see this as something I should be doing with the business.” If you are a small organic supplier, Gavin would be interested to hear from you. They are happy to work with

www.s40local.co.uk

non-certified suppliers, so they can support local suppliers and invest in the community.

reusable cups, should you want to buy one in store.

“We’ve changed our fish supplier, to a more sustainable source, which is MSC certified. This assures us that the fisherman consider how they fish, how low they drop their nets etc, and lessens the impact.” Bottle and Thyme have reviewed their meat sources and their beef comes from a grass-fed source, whilst poultry and pork are both free-range. Even the coffee supplier has changed recently - the new supplier is ethical, and you’re able to source the beans back to the farmer and ensure a process that’s fair to all in the supply chain.

Importantly from a climate change perspective… Bottle and Thyme also have a great range of vegetarian and vegan options for people who are choosing to reducing their environmental impact by reducing their meat consumption. “We are keeping a close eye on developments, and where it makes sense for us to change, we’ll adopt the new products.” If you call in with your own cup, for a takeaway coffee, they’ll give you a 10% discount, and they’ll soon have their own

“It’s taken us six months of hard work to get where we are. For any business, no matter how big or small, cutting down on plastic and waste takes time, but it is possible.”

There is also a cost to all this change which has to be soaked up or passed on to clients. “For us at Bottle and Thyme, we feel we’re doing the right thing and we haven’t increased our prices. Our hope is that people see what we’re doing and come to us where they can be assured we’re doing out bit.”

Gavin admits that there are still things to do, but every action makes a positive impact. “We really are welcome to new suggestions on anything you might spot, so do come and talk to us”. Check out the new website which covers the changes in more detail and be sure to call in to sample the menu … and make sure you don’t leave anything! The Scent Styling Co. Words: Paul Chapman Images: The Scent Styling Co.

T

he Scent Styling Co. is a luxury retail and fragrance service, new to Chatsworth Road. Originally established by Jane Helliwell (pictured above) in 2016, Jane is excited to be providing her luxury home fragrances and scent workshops from her new Chatsworth Road base. Originally launched as Champagne and Flamingos, Jane works to pair clients to fragrances that capture their personality and reflect their preferences, pairing people or businesses with their own scent that is unique to them, “I won’t sell the same scent to any other client”, explains Jane. We all have scents that bring to mind a person, place or memory, and Jane will use this as inspiration to build new memories or invoke positive feelings.

“I offer bespoke wedding services, I’ll work with a couple over a period of time to pair a scent for their special day, which can infuse all elements of the wedding from scented invitations, the venue itself, the wedding favours and wedding gifts people can take away to treasure. “More and more people are looking for unique ways to personalize their special occasions and I Page 26

can help add a difference that will stay with guests and create lasting memories”, explains Jane.

Jane’s business has featured in the national press; Hello, Brides, You and Your Wedding and The Cheshire magazines have all run articles on Jane’s services… so you’re in good company! She works as the main scent supplier in high quality venues, including The Grand Hotel in York and Bawtry Hall, Doncaster. Jane works with people to pair unique scents for their home, this can be simple touches like personalised candles or across a wider variety of products including diffusers, room and linen atomizers and scented ceramics. The new retail premises will also stock a range of home fragrance products, including candles and diffusers, making lovely editions to any home and fabulous gifts. Scent can also be used to the advantage of businesses, and Jane works with businesses to pair their signature scent for anything from stationary to the physical business environment. “At The Scent Styling Co. I offer a range of products for businesses to provide a private scent label. You probably don’t even realise, but your nose guides you through many in-store

experiences. Major brands have run successful experiments with scent; and proved that people will buy more (as much as 50% more) and at increased prices in a scent-managed store than in the same non-scented store selling identical and cheaper products!

“A brand with its own ‘scent logo’ gives a perception of quality, increases sales and leads to higher brand loyalty. Pair scent with food and wine, senses of smell and taste, together enhancing any dining experience”, adds Jane.

“All our fragrances are hand poured in-house at The Scent Styling Co.’s new premises at 245a Chatsworth Road, using fragrance oils manufactured by a leading fragrance house. The products are suitable for vegans as well as being Phthalate and Paraben free. Jane will be running a number of events in the run up to Christmas from her workshop, details of these are shown on the right or visit her website for more info.

During September/October Jane will be offering a free candle gift worth £12 with any purchase over £20 from The Scent Styling Co. If you are looking for a new way to create a lasting impression, be that for an event, in your home or for your business, or for a unique gift, please contact Jane.

Jane’s highly sought-after services at The Scent Styling Co. bring a new element of luxury and style, and are a welcome new independent addition to the business community on Chatsworth Road.

Business Cover Art

John King This Edition's Cover by West Studios Tenant, John King Words: Annie French Images: John King (Photography by Defeye Creative)

F

or anyone who has visited West Studios in Chesterfield, you will have noticed the large portrait in the entrance, you really cannot miss it. It’s a portrait of John King, painted by his son the artist John King in the 2014.

I first met John in 2009, when as a mature student I enrolled onto the Foundation Art and Design course at Chesterfield College. John taught painting and life drawing classes, so it is a great pleasure for me to have this opportunity to interview John and talk about his artwork, how artists have to juggle to make a living and the importance of life drawing classes for all artists. AF: John, did you always want to do a portrait of your Dad?

JK: The painting of my Dad was going to be one of a set of six, the title for them was going to be Big Heads. They were going to be paintings of people who had figured as important and somehow, they found a switch that had changed something in our lives or theirs. My Dad was an obvious one because he was such a selfless, deeply loving parent, I thought it was appropriate for him to be the first one. He was becoming much older because of his pneumoconiosis, ‘Pit Disease’. He was becoming very frail, I had to start painting. AF: Did your Dad sit for that?

JK: He sat for some photographs, I worked from one primary photo and the others gave me suggestions for how the light would be needed to shift around and get the shape of his face. I produced a small A1 sketch first, before attempting the final painting.

AF: Sadly, your Dad passed away, did he get to see the finished painting? JK: He was around when West Studios first opened and saw the photograph of Toby Perkins MP standing in front of it. It wasn’t finished, but my Dad died shortly after that, and then I had this period where I couldn’t concentrate on that painting, it was too difficult. Page 30

AF: You said it was going to be a set of six, who are the other people you are planning on painting?

JK: They will still be of people that flicked that switch and made a difference to me. One of them will be my old art teacher, who spent most of his time living in France. I also have the need for their faces to be interesting. AF: The portraiture of your Dad is larger than life - why is the scale so large?

JK: The larger surface gives me a chance to explore clumsier, cruder brush strokes. It gives me a chance to be less fussy with the painting. Anyone who knows John or has attended his life drawing classes knows that he ordinarily paints people, from the large-scale paintings of Alison the life model to the larger-thanlife painting of his Dad. So, when John and I shared a studio in 2016, I was amazed to see large-scale paintings of flower meadows. I asked John what brought about this change in direction. JK: It was a moment of madness, I thought I should be doing something that is commercial and try to sell them in galleries.

A flaw in the plan was that John would have to go and tell people about them and show them. This is a normal dilemma for many artists, - they enjoy the process of making and painting, but not being the centre of attention when it comes to exhibitions. One of the key skills that artists have to learn is how to price their work and to be realistic with their time. JK: I limited myself to spend eight hours on each painting over a period of a month. When galleries take 50% commission and then you have to buy materials, that doesn’t leave much at the end. As an artist, you have to juggle between earning a living, and fulfilling your passion and the need to draw and paint. AF: Did you always want to be an artist?

JK: My Dad didn’t want me to work in the mines. I studied A’ level Art then went on to do the Art Foundation at West Mansfield College. I started a BA in Fine Art at Newcastle Poly, but

www.s40local.co.uk

dropped out in the first year. With a new family to support I had to find work, so I ended up working in the pit for three years. I then went on to become the world’s worst salesman for a furniture store. Eventually John started to draw again and achieved his BA in an odd mix of Illustration and Fine Art at Bradford College. John currently works for a nonprofit organisation working with groups of adults with learning disabilities. Alongside this he runs regular life drawing and painting classes at West Studios. AF: John I can remember how nervous I was on my first life drawing class at the college, can you talk a little about why life drawing is an important skill to have?

JK: When learning a set of drawing skills, you have to genuinely look. When you are not an artist, it could be argued by a lot of people as inappropriate gaze because somebody you don’t know is unclothed in front of you. What you are doing is striving to produce that surface and shape as accurately as you can, so there is a long stare and a return to the drawing, and the process repeats itself again and again. While looking, we are seeing more, and we are adjusting and changing shapes and moving the drawing on the paper. As marks and lines become more successful, the drawing say more about the person doing the drawing rather than the model. The Dark Flower paintings can be seen at the Leabrooks Arts Complex in Somercoats, Derbyshire. https://leabrooksartscomplex.com

Drawing and Painting classes take place at West Studios on Wednesday evenings, twice a month.

We live in a time when reviews can be bought online so although we might read the feedback online, how much of it is genuine? And what's more without this knowledge we let it unfluence our choices.

On the flip side advertiser Simon Chalk from Laterliving now! has been in touch to say how well his early adverts in our sister publication S41 Local are doing. It's great to hear that people are reading the magzines and taking action.

We were looking for a competent electrician and turned to your magazine for inspiration, and chose Dale Montague from your small trade adds.

At S40 Local we have no online review button for you to press (although there is on Facebook: S40Local). If someone does a good job for you all you can do is tell them, talk to people about it, recommend them. Good news travels fast.

Very reasonable, very friendly, happy to do anything and I’ve had several jobs done by him, only small … but I’m absolutely delighted with him and I could recommend him highly. Thank, Carol

Kip's GCSE Students. Who are they? As we start the new school year, many of us with children in Years 10 and 11 have eyes firmly fixed on GCSEs. They will come to dominate our time, our thoughts and sometimes, our worries!

It can be a daunting two years for parents and children alike. Most parents and guardians, when trying to help, will be familiar with the cry of “But we don’t do it like that at school!” It can also be difficult to work out whether your chid could benefit from the extra, tailor-made help that is available at Kip. So, here are some examples of students we’ve helped in the last couple of years: Tom is Dyslexic and this affects both his maths and English. It makes it hard for him to store and recover long term memories and he needs plenty of time to get his thoughts down on paper. He had been coming to Kip for three years and had responded well to the mixture of 1-2-1 support and independent learning. There were times when he found learning exhausting, frustrating and just downright difficult but, with the support and encouragement of his tutor, Tom made steady progress and tackled his GCSE exams with a positive attitude. He passed both maths and English with good grades and is starting his preferred college course in September!

Lucy also finds learning difficult. Last year she struggled with GCSEs and failed to pass both maths and English. This year she has started an apprenticeship and has started to study Functional Skills for both subjects. Her tutor at Kip helped her get to grips with a different exam style and started to rebuild her confidence. Within the first six months Lucy was able to pass her first maths exam and two English exams! She is well on her way to achieving her educational and professional goals! Lily came to Kip in Year 8. She was not having any problems at school, but her mum thought she could do with some extra help to achieve her full potential. She began to study English with Kip and then added maths in Year 9. As time went by, her grades began to improve, and Lily began to see that she really could achieve more than she ever imagined. When the GCSE results came out at the end of August this year, Lily was on the phone to Jo at Kip to share her good news: she had grade 6 for English, 7 for maths and 8 for science. Wonderful! So, if a child you know is a Tom, Lucy or Lily, call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 and book a FREE assessment today!

Music

The Kicklips talk haircuts, influences and their gig highlights Words:Simon Paterson Image: The kicklips

H

aving recently had a track played on the TV show Tattoo Fixers, played Tramlines, Ynot and the Isle of Wight festivals, I thought I'd better interview the Kicklips before they are too big for a local community magazine! They are a threepiece band from Dronfield consisting of: Beck Harley on bass and lead vocals, Mo Ghani on guitar and Dan Siddall on drums. Who came up with the name the Kicklips?

Beck: Mo and I came up with the name The Kicklips one night in The Dronfield Arms; we thought it far beat our original name, 'Poems For Children'. Mo: Just for the record – I had nothing to do with that dreadful pre-Kicklips branding. 'Poems For Children' would cause real problems for parents using Spotify when your adult, rock and roll anthems start playing! How did you guys meet?

Beck: Will have to be Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker and a fair bit of John Lennon. Mo: Metallica, Hendrix, and Pink Floyd are the big three. Dan: Toto are definitely a big one for me. Toto were quite big in Africa for a while! How would you describe your sound?

Mo: We like to use the term ‘Garage Rocknroll', but we’ve been described as ‘indie’ before. Beck: Yeah we don’t really like the term ‘indie,’ as it’s gets thrown about far too much. I’ve heard Oasis and George Ezra described as ‘indie’ in almost the same breath – what’s that all about? Oasis, definitely, maybe, could be rock and roll stars (you see what I did there). Who has the best haircut? Beck: Mo.

Beck: Mo and I have known each other for around 13 years – having met in the first year of primary school. Dan: I got in touch with the guys over Facebook after seeing their advert looking for a drummer around two years ago now. I bet Beck and Mo have some good stories to tell having grown up with each other! I look forward to hearing some of these on the Late, Late Show with James Corden. What’s your song writing process?

Beck: Bloodshed, shouting, tears, and the occasional Greggs. Mo: Beck usually comes into the rehearsal studio with a few songs written, tries them out with us, throws out most of them, and we end up with a tune or two. Page 40

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Mo: Beck. Dan: Me I guess – but definitely Mo. I love it how Beck said Mo but clearly thinks it’s himself. Hair like that doesn’t manage itself, Beck! Where have you performed, and which is your favourite gig of all time?

Mo: We’ve played all over really – when we first kicked things off we were bouncing around Sheffield venues like Plug, The Leadmill and Café Totem, but since then we’ve been on two tours and hit festival season. The best gig for me so far must be either the Lincoln date of our February tour, at The Engine Shed, our recent hometown headline show, or Ynot Festival 2018. Beck: The favourite for me would either be

www.s40local.co.uk

our recent Sheffield headline or Isle of Wight festival this year. Dan: Definitely Ynot 2018 so far. Ynot and the Isle of Wight festival are pretty big names… I have to say I am very jealous. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Mo: Just do it. Don’t try too hard to be something specific; you don’t want to end up looking like a tribute band. Beck: Don’t worry about looking stupid, because that’s inevitable.

And they say rock and roll is dead!

If you could collaborate with anyone past or present who would you choose? Beck: I think I’d donate my left leg to an Oxfam if it meant I could have a sit down with Elvis Costello. Mo: Almost certainly Pink Floyd. Dan: Gotta be Toto. I’m with you here, Mo. Pink Floyd is a good shout.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened on tour, please bear in mind that your parents read this? Mo: Blackpool. Need I say more? Beck: I mean I got a fine for going in a bus lane in Nottingham. I’d say that’s pretty rock'n'roll.

Dan: Beck accidentally stole my wallet in London and it almost caused World War III.

News West Studios Exhibition White Light White Peak – The Live Experience. Written, photographed and performed by Simon Corble, stage direction by Alice Bartlett.

The award-winning playwright, poet, photographer and performer, Simon Corble, pulls together his varied talents into a unique evening of Peak District experiences, which is touring across the region and beyond, alongside the publication of his book, White Light White Peak. West Studios Theatre Space, 10 October 7:30pm.

Starting in the depths of a snowy winter, both book and live performance are a journey through a Peak District year, including encounters with the weather, wildlife and people; some amusing, some thought-provoking and many involving a springer spaniel...or two. Simon delivers his poems from memory and in a conversational style. More like miniature short stories, complete with twists and some happy endings, or, as Buxton Festival Fringe reviewer, Jim Marriott wrote, “this is a conversation he is holding with you in a quiet corner of a local pub on a winter’s evening. Words and metaphors flow delightfully and with ease. Spellbinding writing…”

accompanying soundscape, captured locally - and in all weathers.

The hardback book (signed copies of which will be on sale after each performance), with a colourful foreword by fellow White Peak poet, F. Philip Holland, has already had some fantastic reviews. One is by Helen Moat, well-known Peak District author, travel writer and book reviewer: “A joyous book - one to be slowly savoured…Simon Corble produces a little bit of magic in White Light White Peak…This is a book to keep and cherish.” West Studios in Chesterfield are also hosting the travelling exhibition from 3 to 10 October of prints from White Light White Peak. This is a Found Theatre production, in association with Rotherham Underground. www.whitelightwhitepeak.com

The White Light is all in monochrome photography: Atmospheric landscapes, wildlife shots and enigmatic moments, reflecting the images and moods heard in the poems and projected onto a large screen throughout the performance with an

Brampton Brewery Cleans Up

"The winners from the SIBA competition are officially the best independent craft beers in the UK, something brewers should be extremely proud of" Ian Fozard, SIBA Chairman.

Brampton Brewery took home 2 Gold Medals, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze across multiple categories in both Cask and Bottle at the SIBA Midlands Region Independent Beer Awards, which took place at Peterborough Beer Festival last week. The winning beers included:

Menin Gate 7.4% - won Gold in the bottled Strong Beers category, and is a premium Belgian Dubbel style ale. Speciale 5.8% - won Gold in the bottled IPA category, and is a true English style IPA.

Tudor Rose 4.6% - won Silver in the bottled Premium Pale Ales category, and is a hoppy, refreshing pale ale.

Wasp Nest 5.0% - won Silver in the bottled Premium Bitters category, and is a true English Best Bitter.

Impy Dark 4.3% - won Silver in the bottled Dark Beers category, and it a traditional dark mild ale.

Brampton Best 4.2% - won Bronze in cask Best Bitters category, and is a quintessentially British Best Bitter.

Page 44

The SIBA Midlands Region Beer Awards judged a huge range of beers across a number of styles in separate cask and bottle, and can competitions. As the awards are judged mostly by brewers, industry experts and beer journalists the SIBA Independent Beer Awards are very much seen as the prestigious ‘Brewers’ Choice Awards’ by the industry. In total the Midlands Region supplied 177 different cask ales and 107 beers in bottle or can which were all judged on the day. Brampton Brewery M.D. Chris Radford had this to say on their win. “It’s another fantastic achievement for us and testament to the dedication and hard work of all the team we have at Brampton Brewery. Winning awards is not necessarily what it’s all about, but it’s always better to be winning them than not. It feels particularly special to win here – your peers, industry experts – there’s no higher compliment. We had a great year last year too, but we’ll do what we do – get our heads down and go again.” www.bramptonbrewery.co.uk. www.siba.co.uk/awards/

News Chesterfield Repair Café: New Home Chesterfield Repair Cafe is moving to new premises. They’re going to be at Chesterfield Baptist Church from October onwards, open for repairs from 10am to 1pm, last orders for repairs at 12.30 pm.

The Repair Café will attempt to repair broken or damaged items. Items can be put back into use and given an extended lifespan. This way we also send less waste to landfill and use up fewer resources when replacement items don’t need to be bought. Their repairers can often show you how to repair and maintain your own items, or advise you how to increase their useful lives and how to dispose of them when they cannot be repaired. To help facilitate the move, they're keen to attract more helpers, not necessarily fixers as they're planning to offer refreshments at the new venue. Any help greatly appreciated. Garden Tips

Autumn Garden Tips

If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.

When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all Words: Inspire Community Garden the hybrids some shaping while Picture: Robert Nixon Betts they are dormant. Remember that many of these appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries & blackcurrants. When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.

Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really

have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic, and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few).

It is time to think about ordering new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm. Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.

Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

Dobb Edge Stone

The next in our series of ancient sites and artefacts near Chesterfield. Words & Images: Colin Harrison

A

ncient sites and artefacts near Chesterfield: Dobb Edge cup and ring-marked stone (near the Robin Hood Inn).

Cup and ring marks are found across most the world, although given that the design is a series of concentric circles that could just be a coincidence; those in Derbyshire are the furthest south they have been found in the UK. They are quite mysterious. Their simple design makes them difficult to age; they are thought to be Neolithic, so thousands of years old - there is no way of knowing what, if anything, they were for. Sometimes several can be found on the same large rock, but the one at Dobb Edge is on a single flat stone, embedded in the ground. It was found just a few years ago when the nearby path was being maintained. How to get there: the path starts near the Robin Hood Inn, so either leave Chesterfield on the Chatsworth Road or go through Old Brampton, staying on the same road (to Baslow) until you reach the pub. The latter is quieter but narrower in places – if you go up the main road you can join it by taking the clearly marked turning to Cutthorpe just after Wadshelf and then bearing left at the first junction. If cycling, this is certainly nicer coming back, when you won't be going as fast as on the way there as it's uphill; either way, it's just over 5 miles from Storrs Road.

The stone is less than a mile from the Robin Hood, but the path's surface is quite variable. From the pub, walk down the hill until you see, on the other side of the road (just before the S-bend road sign) a footpath sign by a gap in the fence. Cross the road (carefully!) and go down the steps (which are quite steep), then across the bridge and up the other side, ignoring the Page 52

track which crosses the path diagonally. Then take the path sign posted 'Beeley via Swiss Lake'. It's rough (and slippery when wet) in places, and at a few points it passes directly next to the edge, where the path is quite narrow. It's safe but might not be suitable for excitable children or dogs – or people with vertigo, as there a couple of places with sheer (but not particularly high) drops from it.

Keep on this path, turning left after you go through a gap in a stone wall, and then, just over a dodgy style, turn right and follow the path until you come to some concrete steps let into a wall. On the other side turn left and walk up the slope; after about 200 yards you'll pass a stone basin, and, about 120 yards further on, there's a deep hollow in the bracken on your right. Just before you come level with that, there are some low rocks near the path; between them, level with the ground, is a flat, pale stone, with the ring markings carved into it. This can be a bit overgrown at some times of the year, and, depending on the weather, the rings can be a bit indistinct. If you follow the path for about another ¾ of a mile, you'll come to the ponds and lakes that feed the Chatsworth House water features; Beeley is about another 1½ miles from there. The path is concessionary and isn't shown shown on the relevant OS Maps (Land ranger 119 or OS Explorer OL 24) although it is on some map apps. The rock itself isn't shown either; its map reference is SK 2874 6923. Useful web sites: Megalithic Portal: www. megalithic.co.uk Derbyshire Heritage: www.derbyshireheritage.co.uk
