DECEMBER COPY DATE FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER

Intro Hi All

It's always a pleasure to write this as it means I'm sending another edition off to print. So last month I received a voicemail from 'Ralph', a fan of S40 Local but not a fan of last month's cover - I'd just like to say thanks for the eloquant message which made me chuckle and 'sorry Ralph'! It's always good to get feedback and it does help us focus what we do! Anyway, hope you like this month's cover Ralph :-). With climate news high on many agendas we have an introduction to the Environmental Committee at Brookfield School. along with other news from school, written by some budding young jouranlists. We've offered them two pages a month to develop their skills and share the school news, so watch this space! I've met a handful of local businesses again this edition, some are S40 Local regulars and some are new. I love seeing behind the scenes and witnessing their passion for what they do - the least we can all do, is try and support them. And on that note... Christmas is just 73 days away, as I write, and we've a few ideas for gifts from our local independent businesses on pages 6 and 7. Please take a look and give the local guys a thought before heading off to Meadowhall or the interweb. Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk Late item: Cap Money Course, at 7.30pm, Tue 19, 26 Nov and 3 Dec at Walton Church, Moorland View Rd and is completely free of charge. 'Since doing the CAP Moneycourse, I feel so much more in control of my finances’ Would you like to be able to say the same? A free course to teach people budgeting skills and a cash-based system that works. All three sessions should be attended. For details www.capmoney.org.uk or call Tim Soar on 07856 417740.

Christmas

'Trust me on the sunscreen' Time to switch off all devices, put on your shoes and shop locally this Christmas Words: Paul Chapman

B

az Luhrmann penned a classic in 1999, taking the words from a hypothetical commencement speech by columnist Mary Schmich, originally published in June 1997 in the Chicago Tribune. The essay, giving various pieces of advice on how to live a happier life and avoid common frustrations, spread massively via viral email.* What's he on about now, what's this got to do with anything? I can almost hear the groans! The last line 'But trust me on the sunscreen', is how I feel about 'shopping locally'. I feel I use the phrase repeatedly, I try and encourage those around me to do the same and through S40 and S41 Local we try and point you to some great local independent businesses run by the very people who might just live on your street. Yet again Christmas approaches and I make no apologies for repeating the text below. Christmas is on the horizon and with it a shopping list of gifts for family and friends. To fulfil your present buying objectives you could go online and await delivery to your door.

* Source wikipedia

Alternatively, you could spend your money locally this Christmas at a small independent business. There's a chance that the business owner or maker will take your money and spend it in another community shop or cafe... and then the next business owner will do the same thing, keeping the money in Chesterfield and benefiting our local economy. Or yes, you could spend it in a chain store and some faceless shareholder somewhere in the world will add the amount to their fortune and it has no impact on our community's economy. I know shopping local takes more time and effort but if you need convincing or you'd like to see how this works, check out 'Tale of a Tenner' on YouTube (quick code below), it's inspiring - and not just because of the cyclists!

Page 6

This edition and next we'll be including some great ideas for gifts and we'll also suggest some great services so people don't end up regifting that 'thing' they didn't want or need, perhaps helping the planet a little. See adverts for more details, contact numbers and addresses. And ... if you're a local business reading this and want something in December give us a call, it'll only cost you an advert. Last thing ... tell them S40 & S41 Local sent you! www.s40local.co.uk

Community

C

hristmas is coming and it’s coming to Chesterfield in style this year, with a plethora of independent retailers, restaurants, bars, cafes and events to get you and all your family in the festive mood.

Festive events in the town centre kick off on Saturday 16 November with the start of the much-loved Christmas Tree Festival at the famous ‘Crooked Spire’ church. Last year there were more than 100 Christmas trees, decorated by local community groups, charities and retailers, on display in all their festive glory. This year there will be even more stunning Christmas trees on display for the two-week festival which ends on Sunday 1 December. Admission is free but donations to the church are always gratefully accepted. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas in Chesterfield however without the annual lights switch on. On Sunday 17 November presenters from Peak FM will be joined by the stars of this year’s pantomime at the Pomegranate Theatre, Jack and the Beanstalk, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Santa and Peter Rabbit, to do the grand lights switch on at 4.45pm. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, with entertainment starting at 12 noon in the Market Place with of stalls, games and rides. And when Santa finishes the Christmas lights switch on, he’ll be taking up residence in his grotto in Chesterfield Market Hall until Christmas Eve. Page 8

Santa will also be enjoying trips on the John Varley boat on Chesterfield Canal. And you can enjoy a trip with him on Santa Special Cruises running every Saturday and Sunday from 23 November to 22 December and on Monday 23 December from Tapton Lock. Make the most of your visit to Santa’s grotto to check out Chesterfield’s shops, stores and market stalls. With new stores opening regularly, like Shop Indie and Rate Cute on Vicar Lane, Chesterfield is guaranteed to have a perfect Christmas gift for all your friends and family including the foodies! Chesterfield is brimming with local produce. Cheese lovers should head to R P Davidson Cheese Factor which boasts around 150 cheeses. For tea and coffee, it has to be Northern Tea Merchants, while Brampton Brewery is the place to go for real ales. You can also sample their ales at pubs in and around Chesterfield, including the Rose & Crown in Brampton and The Glass Works on Sheffield Road. If cocktails and wine are more your thing this Christmas, then head to Chesterfield’s 2018 Restaurant of the Year Bottle & Thyme. Whatever your taste, Chesterfield has something to suit you. Save the petrol, miles and stress and shop, eat and drink local this Christmas in Chesterfield. To keep up-to-date with events happening in Chesterfield this Christmas, please visit

Development

Chesterfield.

There's a lot going on, you know. Words: Paul Chapman

Each year Destination Chesterfield arranges an Investment Summit, this year hosted at Casa Hotel, where developers, businesses and investors gathered to hear the latest updates on progress in Chesterfield. And there’s a lot happening.

The Avenue (Mark Johns)

At the end of the article there are links to various videos and related pages.

The former Avenue Coking Works has seen a massive clean-up operation and the new development by Kier Living delivers housing with a contemporary, open plan feel with a hint to the site's industrial past. The Phase 1 build is in progress, with a release of 252 properties, and future phases taking housing numbers to 469. It also includes commercial units and a school.

Here’s a quick tour of the main highlights. Markham Vale (Peter Storey) Derbyshire’s largest regeneration project established as a result of the decline of heavy industry. This £250m development, includes 200 hectares of trails, woodlands, enhanced wildlife sites and is fronted by a two-mile industrial area along the M1. So far, 52 new companies are based on the site, creating 2,236 new jobs. This already exceeds the number employed at the colliery during its height of operation, the end target is 4,100 jobs. To the north side of the motorway, most businesses have been on site for 12 to 18 months and are already expanding. This is great news for Chesterfield, as although businesses may not be local, they employ skilled people from the immediate area to work in the warehouses, distribution centres, factories and offices. Social Media is the primary tool for filling vacancies. The days of browsing at the job centre have long gone. There are a typically 20 to 25 jobs posted per week at Markham Vale. FB: jobs at markham vale Twitter: @markhamvalejobs To help fill these roles, Markham Vale has its own training facility at the Environment Centre where 1500 people have attended training courses in the past 12 months. Markham Vale is also keen to remember its mining heritage and markhamstorymine. org commemoratives the sad death of 106 miners killed in Markham Tragedies in 1937, 38 and 73. Page 22

The brownfield site on the way to Clay Cross is a prime location for future development and Kier Living have created ‘a new development which blends in sympathetically with its surroundings whilst having a genuine sense of place’.

Chesterfield Borough Council (Huw Bowen) In a whistle stop round up of developments across the Borough, Huw Bowen (Chief Executive Chesterfield Borough Council) brought us up to date on a number of projects. Chesterfield HS2: HS2 is over budget and running late, however it continues to move forward and will bring future economic benefits and jobs. Check out the new video by Whitham Cox Architects (see link) that shows how the walk from the station into town could look, framing the spire, dare I suggest it, almost like a mini Sheffield. The delivery of HS2 will also bring about a depot for Staveley, where Talgo, a rail innovator, will be based, creating 250 jobs and development of the Staveley corridor with 750 homes, a school and creating a new community. Chesterfield Waterside: Avant Homes has acquired the land at the old Arnold Laver site for the development of 177 two, three and fourbedroom homes, with the first homes expected to be released for sale later this year. The development will also include a seven storey office building (planning secured) which will bring in new businesses and investors, who want to be based on the doorstep of the station. Northern Gateway: The new Premier Inn is now fully open and developers Jomast are searching

The Glass Yard

The Avenue (Wingerworth)

Development out tenants for the ground floors. The new multistory car park is open for business, we all have our views on it… I like it. The scheme is also delivering a new Enterprise Centre on the old ‘donut’ car park, with work starting on site very soon; “we’ve had a look and haven’t found any old kings” laughed Huw. Once complete, and with street layout changes to Elder Way, it will deliver a whole new look and feel to the northern entry to town. Others: David Lloyd Leisure has submitted plans for Adrenaline World, Phase 1 of Peak Resort. The Glass Yard leisure and retail development has been approved on Sheffield Road (similar to the development at 131 Chatsworth Road). Vicar Lane will be installing a new LED screen to support events at the amphitheatre junction, outside H&M. “All these projects are helping revitalise our town. Chesterfield is a great place in which to live and work, your money buys a bit more house here, our average price is £184k as opposed to £220k across the country,” added Huw. “The plans to boost town centre living are in progress, the old bank in New Square, and McCarthy Stone are due to redevelop the old North East Derbyshire County Council offices as retirement apartments.” “Commercial demand for the town continues to grow, we’ve already received 400 enquires this year alone. Our great location with sites at Markham Vale, the proximity to Peak District, good quality housing, employment availability that’s supported by training opportunities at Chesterfield College and Derby University, gives us a great future. Yes, we have problems, but development and job creation ensure our town's doing well." Skilling for investment: (Mark Warrilow, HS2 and David Higham, Chesterfield College) Chesterfield College have been working with young and older people, skilling them for the opportunities being created. The Premier Inn saw 20 people trained exclusively for the jobs available. The college continues to retrain the older generation, preparing them for roles in the public sector in hospital, nursing, support and social care roles. HS2 opportunities will exist for plant operators, civil engineers and apprenticeships in the supply chain. The developments hope to inspire young people and show them what happens inside businesses, and give them insight into interesting jobs available, perhaps opening their eyes to roles they didn’t know existed. Page 24

Polly Barnfield OBE (CEO Maybe*) The patent-pending Maybe* platform uses Artificial Intelligence to help organisations listen and engage with their customers through social media, benchmark their results, and optimise the Return On Investment of their activity. Polly has been working with Vicar Lane looking at how they can use social media to increase footfall and sales. “In 2019 we started looking at our devices more than watching our TVs, an active social media user spends 136 minutes each day scrolling through 300ft of posts,” Polly informed us. “National retailers are all using social media to point people at their websites, the ‘What Do You Think Campaign (#WDYT) has been a huge success.” Polly showed a video clip (link below) that demonstrated how a small independent, footwear retailer in Cheltenham has seen a 39% increase in sales as a direct result of social media use. Please visit the links below to find out more about Maybe* and what it could do for your business. Personally, level I struggled with this part of the day. The instant hit creates a reactive response to the post, ‘I want one of those’ etc. but does the recipient actually need it? Last month we talked about avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, whilst I fully understand the need for businesses to be successful, should we carefully consider purchases? It’s a balance, and one I hope we can reach so we have a thriving successful high street but one with a sustainability ethos that supports it. I’ll leave that with you. Cllr Tony King (Derbyshire County Council) Tony wrapped up the day with a few short words to say "Derbyshire is a fabulous place to live work and visit," I can’t agree more. After the morning I went away with a few questions, a few actions and a firm desire to help all the presenters get more people into our town centre. There are many small business owners putting their energy and money into town and trying to make a go of things, and it’s our job to support them and step across the threshold. #shoplocal Links:

inding financial advice that you can trust is a tricky business, and quite often the decision is put on the ‘too difficult list’ or very often, left too late.

Milestone Financial Planning is a local independent business, keen to extend their present client base and with over 50 years combined experience are well placed to offer advice for your circumstances. The team consists of eight people, all are Chesterfield based and the picture shows left to right, Charlotte Pearce (Finance Manager/Administration) Nick Evans (Financial Planner), Jake Bennett (Technical Administrator), Peter Blant (Financial Planner), Craig Croft-Rayner (Financial Planner), Joanne Ali (Client Service Manager/Administration) and seated, husband and wife, Michael (Managing Director) and Jo Heath (Operations Director). The business has grown rapidly to support the demand for high quality advice and the team brings with them a wealth (important to a Financial Planner) of experience and knowledge, plus backgrounds in stock broking, law and large financial corporates. MD, Michael Heath trained as a stockbroker and later worked in a national advisory firm before Milestone was formed. He explains, “I saw a gap in the market for a totally independent advice service. Personal contact can get lost in larger companies and I wanted to offer a local, personal and bespoke service”. “Milestone Financial Planning offers a single point of contact for people, creating a service that’s based around individual needs at specific points in life’s journey. “Throughout life, we have difficult and complex financial decisions to make as circumstances change. We offer clear advice at these decision points; our role is to be with you for the long term ensuring we deliver a plan that’s in line with your needs.” The name Milestone emerged from their commitment to this approach. “We help people who want to plan for and protect their future. This can range from pension planning, to investments and inheritance tax planning” Peter explains.

“Our Unique Selling Point is our independence; we have no ties or links to any other Financial Institution. This gives us total flexibility to offer a truly bespoke service. Being of modest size allows us to be agile, act quickly and deliver a costeffective professional service to our clients. “We have relationships with local accountants and solicitors and through this can offer an end-to-end service, so there is no need to send people off to do their own leg work, we can do it for them. “Today’s financial climate is challenging, the industry is changing, politics are impacting decisions, the superstar fund managers of the past no longer exist, banks and building societies are pulling back their financial advice services, and businesses like ours need to change and adapt to stay ahead.” Michael adds, “At Milestone, we like to keep customers informed, to give them the opportunity to gain confidence, build trust and become more engaged and involved in their own finances.” “At important and volatile times like this, where we have Brexit on the horizon and seemingly no end to the US/China trade wars, it is vital we stay in touch with customers” says Peter. “It’s about relationships, developing trust, regular reviews, consistent results and supporting people when life demands it - we’re in it for the long term.” Based at Dunston, the office is modern and relaxed, with parking outside the door for clients. The team know every client, go above and beyond expectation and always deliver the highest standards of service . Michael says, “It’s important that the team know the journey that individual clients are on. At the end of the day, we want our clients to sleep easy at night, safe in the knowledge their investments are at the centre of everything we do” Want to meet over a tea or coffee for a free, no-obligation chat about your financial future? Then give the team at Milestone Financial Planning a call and see what you think.

Business Intro

Hogg Norton Fruit As Nature Didn't Intend... Words: Paul Chapman Image: Hogg Norton

Like many successful businesses, Cutthorpe-based, Hogg Norton Fruit Liqueurs started as a pub conversation.

“On one occasion, whilst we were tasting, debating and tasting a few more samples we started throwing the idea around that we should do this commercially.”

Adrian Hogg, from Cutthorpe, and Mike Norton, from Holymoorside, are friends who’ve met through involvement with Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club, where their children play.

“This was about four years ago and since those beginnings we’ve developed an award-winning selection of fruit liqueurs that include; Blackberry, Gooseberry, Mixed Berries, Raspberry, Spiced Plum and Strawberry.”

Adrian explains “We started making homemade liqueurs as a bit of a hobby and were being a bit creative with the products. We’d take them to BBQs and parties and ask people ‘would you like to try our new flavour we’re trying out?’. Eventually people started approaching us asking whether we had any those fruit liqueurs? “ Page 32

“Things changed at the start of the year, we decided to take it up a level and give it a real go. We’d been attending food fairs and artisan markets, occasionally straying further afield than Derbyshire, but keeping the local market as a focus.”

www.s40local.co.uk

“We decided to put our products forward for the Great Taste Awards and then took part in a local taste test to supply the new Morrisons store in Bolsover, this involved a panel of 250 tasters and Hogg Norton Fruit Liqueurs were selected for their shelves when it opens in November. They are keen to support local suppliers, which is fantastic news for us.” “We’ve even had people from the taster panel seek us out since at fairs to buy our products.” “Our aim is to produce the finest quality fruit liqueurs, so we use the freshest fruit which gives a great taste, and this has been recognised by our achievement of a ‘Great Taste Award’ this year”, says Adrian. “Great Taste is the largest and most trusted accreditation scheme for fine food and drink, and it’s fabulous to have been awarded a one star. This means our products are ‘simply delicious and deliver a fantastic flavour’, the Great Taste logo is the sign people trust when buying food and drink and we are so proud to have won”, adds Mike. Hogg Norton are proud to be using the best quality natural ingredients, with no additives or preservatives. All their products are gluten free, dairy free and vegan friendly. They only use British fruit and the plums come from Cutthorpe and gooseberries from Holymoorside so keeping it very local. On my visit to their premises in Cutthorpe I was blown away by the professional set up and cleanliness, (they have a 5-star food hygiene rating), and the fruity scent from the batches was something else. The samples I was given (yes, I know, it’s a hard life) were a delight, shared with friends over a camping weekend, and although I’m no connoisseur of fruit liqueurs were thoroughly enjoyed! If you fancy giving the liqueurs a try, they are available in 50ml bottles for £4 (two shots), ideal for secret Santa presents, or larger eight bottle

ENJOYING HOGG NORTON If you’re not familiar with drinking fruit liqueurs, Hogg Norton offer some suggestions on how to best enjoy the drinks; • On its own or with ice; • Add it to Prosecco or Champagne to give it that bit of FIZZ; • Make a long drink with soda, tonic or lemonade; • Flavour other spirits such as Gin, Vodka and Rum; • Use it in cocktails; • Add it over Ice Cream or any dessert … but most of all simply enjoy it.

packs for more deserving friends at £28. Once you’ve decided on your favourite flavour, the 250ml bottles can be ordered for £18.50. If you buy from the website and use code S40 Local or S41 Local up to 31st December 2019, you’ll get 20% off. Adrian or Mike may well appear on your doorstep to deliver the order - what’s not to like. You can also pick up a bottle from local stockist, Londis at 622 Chatsworth Road, Cheese Factor in Chesterfield or the Brampton Brewery shop, as well as all the Hartington Cheese Shops or from local artisan markets and fairs. Thyme To Eat Vegetarian Words: Paul Chapman Images: Paul Chapman & Thyme To Eat

T

he number of people following a vegetarian and vegan diet has increased dramatically in recent years, and as more people aim to eat less meat, for ethical, health or sustainability reasons, having a local café dedicated to vegetarian and vegan food is a real bonus. Thyme To Eat is Chesterfield's only entirely vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Owned and run by husband and wife team Sharon and Jerr O’Carroll, it’s nestled away in the historic shambles right in the heart of town. “We’re unique”, says Sharon. “The closest businesses doing what we do are out of town, we even find that people travel into Chesterfield to eat with us. We make more or less everything in house, we don’t do our own bread for instance, but if we don’t do it ourselves, we source it locally. “There are an increasing number of people with allergies. Being in control of what we do, with control of all ingredients, we know what goes into our products so can be sure of the advice we give to our customers.” Sharon has always worked in catering, restaurants, hotels, sandwich shops, the whole sector. More recently, she ran a sandwich shop in New Whittington but was looking for something that was more a challenge, step up Thyme To Eat. “We move into Thyme To Eat at the Shambles about 5 years ago. It was already operating as a health food business and had always been a vegetarian café, it was still a popular place, but we liked it and took a shine to it. The town centre location was busier and allowed us to look at how we could further improve on the plant-based diet we offer.” “Alongside the food, we offer a small range of products, tea, supplements, flours, herbs etc. It’s not a huge range but we carry the essentials and we’re happy to order things in if there is something specific people want us to find.” The menu at Thyme To Eat is all made in-house as mentioned, a breakfast menu, brunch, soups, lunches, vegan chilli, gluten free lasagne, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, and toasties, salads, Page 36

scones, cakes daily and seasonal specials of sweet potatoes and parsnip curry with rice, or BBQ pulled jackfruit, tacos salad, and sauté potatoes perhaps? Sharon is proud to use local suppliers. Ibbotson's are their main supplier of fruit and veg, bread comes from Jackson's, they use a local milkman, Cheese Factor for cheeses etc and they continue to look for suppliers that fit their ethos. Thyme To Eat they do more than just food; they have hosted music events by invite, small intimate gatherings where people bring their own drinks, enjoy the act and generally have a great night. What strikes me about the café is how laid back the place is, it’s a welcome change from the fast food and large restaurant food chains, it’s another of the fantastic local independent businesses that are growing in number in Chesterfield. A place where you’ll find a friendly bunch and relaxing place in which to eat or drink. It’s not surprising to know that people travel into Chesterfield from the surrounding areas to pay them a visit. “We do have quite an increasing number coming to see us, people are thinking about their environmental impact and choosing vegetarian options, the small things like sourcing our vegetables from Ibbotsons means less waste and helps us support the environment”, explains Sharon. “We have recently been awarded a Blue Plaque by Plastic Free Chesterfield cutting out single use plastic, paper straws, degradable take out boxes, paper bags, having drinks not in plastic bottles, and providing degradable take out cutlery.” “It’s also great to know that other local cafes are sending people to us if they don’t offer gluten free options” says Sharon. “And we’re happy to do the same, we will often send people to our neighbours if they aren’t happy with vegetarian options.” Making the news regularly at the moment is the new location app, what three words, this gave me an idea, asking Sharon ‘what three words would she use to describe Thyme To Eat?’ Healthy. Relaxing. Homely.

Wellbeing In The Workplace Justina Sabido and Sue Brierley bring their wellbeing treatments into your workplace or home. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Wellbeing In The Workplace

N

ew businesses often start when people are exposed to something new. Wellbeing In The Workplace is one such business; one of the founders, Justina Sabido, started going to Reflexology to relieve the stress that came from working as a teacher. It wasn’t until the late 90’s that she had the chance to make any real-life changes and, like many, she felt the need to do something different after parenthood, so took the opportunity to retrain in complementary therapies. Balancing a reduced teaching load, she started to run her therapy business alongside the day job. Sue Brierley was a civil servant for forty plus years and, just like Justina, illness lead her to therapy. Her interest was sparked, and she started to train in various therapies at Chesterfield College. Volunteering at cancer charity, Nenna Kind, for five years helped Sue nurture her caring skills. She is now ready to reduce her civil service hours and, with Justina, provide wellbeing services as Wellbeing In The Workplace. “We like to bring our services to people who need them,” explains Justina. “We take our services to businesses, schools, hospitals, councils etc (we are on the Derbyshire County Councils Approved Vendors list) who provide a small room on their premises and we provide complementary therapies to staff during the working day. The duo are fully signed up and insured members of the Federation of Holistic Therapists and can provide Aromatherapy Massage, Indian Head Massage and Reflexology.

“Our treatments can be useful to help manage pain and symptoms for all sorts of illnesses, such as depression, muscle tension, menopause, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), sinus issues and many more conditions”, explains Sue. “Our treatments can help maintain a sense of balance. Whilst we might not be able to fix the condition, the treatments may help to lessen the impact, or help stop things reaching a tipping point.” “The benefits to employers are significant too”, says Justina. “Staff who feel well have less time off work so fewer working days are lost. Our services also run perfectly alongside traditional medicine so can help those already under NHS care.” As well as workplace-based services, Justina and Sue have been doing some fantastic pamper nights in people’s homes. “Typically, a host gets a group of friends together, provides some drinks and nibbles and we offer treatments for people to enjoy”, says Justina. “These nights are just as much about wellbeing as a bit of a treat”, adds Sue. “We’ve had some great nights and if you fancy booking a session, mention S40 Local when you book, and we’ll give the host a free 20 minute treatment.” If you need to re-establish a sense of balance or have a workplace that could benefit from Justina or Sue’s services, please get in touch. If you know someone who could use a relaxing treat, don’t forget to consider a wellbeing voucher as a Christmas gift.

Behind Business The Business

Dale Montague Electrical

I catch up with Dale and the team at DME Ltd Words: Paul Chapman Images: DME Ltd

ale Montague Electrical Ltd started as a sole trader in 2015 but in four short years has grown to employ an ambitious team of five. Some of the team have joined through the apprentice scheme where, Dale has taken young people from Chesterfield College and continues to support them. We catch up with Dale Montague, Rebekah Tucker (soon to be Montague) and Tom Bargh to take a look behind the business. Dale Montague previously worked for Keith Sanderson Electrical and when Keith decided to retire, Dale set up as a sole trader as Dale Montague Electrical (DME). Within two years, DME had become a limited company and Adam Watts had joined the team as an electrician’s mate. He is now a fully qualified electrician after completing his NVQ and AM2. “Since joining DME I have had various opportunities to better my career, in which I have become fully qualified and built some strong customer relationships”, says Adam.

“It’s great to be in control of our own future, we are quite ambitious, and it just makes it easier for us to control our growth. I’m studying accountancy so we can become a bit more self sufficient. We are a small team of electricians, they all seem to love what they do, they also drive me mad at times but it’s worth it.” Dale adds, “although the commercial work is interesting it’s great to get feedback from people and recommendation on the domestic work. People trust their home to you so you need to respect it and do a good job. On our website it says 'We pride ourselves on being client focused. We aim to build long standing relationships, rather than one off jobs. We are a local, professional and friendly company that takes the time to ensure all jobs are left clean and tidy to help keep customer relationships’, and I like to think we achieve this.”

“Working for DME feels less like a nine to five and more like a family business. Alongside learning the trade, I have also learned some life lessons which I am grateful for.”

DME offer both a domestic and commercial service. Domestic covers household rewires, lights, sockets and vehicle charging points, CCTV, underfloor heating and things like external sockets. “We get a lot of work doing power points for external lights for Christmas lights, and in the spring, more external sockets and lighting schemes for gardens etc”, adds Rebekah.

James McGowan went to college with Dale, and joined DME as a fully qualified electrician in September 2018. “Since joining DME over a year ago, I’ve seen business grow and improve. It’s a great working atmosphere and I’m enjoying my time here with Dale and the team”, says James.

Commercial work includes PAT testing; large-scale industrial installations, motor work and they have recently started installing defibrillators. DME ensure they maintain a training schedule and the team regularly take the necessary time out to achieve the latest statutory regulations.

Tom is the most recent addition to the team, he joined in September this year, and is an apprentice at DME, whilst continuing his study at Chesterfield College. Tom says “I’m thrilled to do my apprenticeship with DME, it’s a brilliant company to work with, they’re all really nice people.”

DME like to support their local community and recently sponsored charity football matches and a snooker event in Sheffield. On top of this you may have seen them on TV, they helped with wiring a sensory garden in Grassmoor, and have completed other electrical work for a disabled guy in Nottingham as part of supporting Alan Titchmarshe's ‘Love Your Garden’ show on ITV.

“I really enjoy industrial work, it’s interesting seeing the larger installations and I love to learn new stuff, we’ve recently been working with large motors on a site and that great to see how it all went together.” Rebekah is perhaps the most important member of the team, she ties them all together, fronting calls, keeping the accounts up-to-date and generally making sure the right people are in the right place with the right equipment to get things done. “I was juggling two jobs before coming to join Dale. I came on board as director in 2017 when the guys needed some support to move the company forward. We have a small base in Sheepbridge, ideally located for the guys and to service our expanding client base in Chesterfield, Sheffield and the surrounding area”, explains Rebekah.

They have also helped wire up a bathroom hoist free of charge, for a girl in Hull recently, this came from NIC EIC who regulate the training and work of electrical enterprises in the UK.

Advertorial

Sometimes it is self-belief not academic ability that can hold you back! When your child is not performing academically at school it is so easy to believe that they are just not academically gifted. You could possibly be quite wrong and what is preventing them from progressing is actually a low self-esteem or self-belief in themselves, but how on earth can you deal with that? Well there are signs to look out for‌ Is your child shy, quiet and very worried about getting things wrong, to the point where they would do anything to avoid having a go if they thought they were going to make a mistake? How many times can a pencil fall on the floor and how many trips to the loo can one child make in a lesson?! At parents evening these might be things to ask about. This was the case with Rosie who came to Kip in October 2018. She was all these things and for her every error, every difficulty seemed like an insurmountable obstacle and her confidence and self-esteem were at rock bottom. She was definitely behind. Her free assessment showed her to be 2 years behind in reading, 3 years behind in spelling and 2 years behind in maths. It all added pressure to her self-belief. Her tutor, Sarah, put together an initial plan, just for Rosie, which took her learning needs and academic gaps into account. They began with looking at some of the spelling rules which, although not perfect, can help children learn to spot spelling patterns. In addition they worked on basic arithmetic skills. As the weeks went by to Christmas, Rosie began to see for herself some patterns in spelling, reading and maths and her

new but true character began to emerge. She smiled as she came in each week. She greeted other students in the room and offered to help new students on their first visit telling them how much it had helped her and how lovely the tutors were. During the spring term she began to understand that getting things wrong is encouraged, as it means you make more progress towards getting things right. Rosie was no longer off to the loo each lesson or distracting herself from working as she loved her progress towards her goals. A new Rosie appeared by the summer term, one who was joining in sports at school, going on camping trips, and tackling new challenges with excitement and a positive attitude. What a transformation! By July 2019, Rosie was ready for her progress assessments. She was bubbling with excitement to see how far she had come, and her face lit up when she saw her results‌Up 2 years in reading, up just over a year in spelling and up a year in maths – all in 8 months! Wonderful progress! She is still with us today and by next spring she will probably be past her age in reading, spelling and maths! Well done Rosie, (and Sarah her tutor of course!) If you think your child might be like Rosie bring them along to Jo for a free assessment.

Brookfield News

Environmental Committee

Brookfield News The latest community update from Brookfield Community School Newsletter edited by Brookfield Journalism Group

Brookfield plays an important role educating our young people and prepares them for life in the working world. Many of the events and achievements are celebrated internally and we'll bring you details of school news and keep you aware of developments.

Brookfield Sixth Form Brookfield Sixth Form has lots of new exciting additions this year. The new areas (The Hive and The Hub), as well as the senior library, provide many opportunities for sixth form students to work in, and relax during their study periods. This is a welcome change in order to provide sixth form students with greater opportunities to revise for upcoming exams. Before these new areas were introduced sixth form students had access only to the library but now have dedicated independent study areas. Brookfield Community School boasts one of the best sixth forms available in the local area and 92% of past sixth form students recommend the sixth form. This is important for the school: their slogan “One School, One Community” shows how it wants to provide the best for its students. A safeguarding issue raised by Ofsted in 2018 has been fully addressed by the introduction of lanyards. This addition allows staff to be notified whether a sixth form student is in or out of the school by a simple swipe of a card. This is a new addition that might not interest the students as much as the new study areas, but it is a vital introduction to identify where the students are at all times which is essential for safeguarding.

A passionate group of year 13 students have formed Brookfield’s first Environmental Committee, a project spearheaded by deputy head girl Kate Ames who’s ultimate goal for the committee is to make Brookfield Community School carbon neutral. This is a long term aim that the committee wishes to accomplish through a variety of methods, including: installing recycling bins within the school, encouraging teachers to car share on their way to and from work, removing plastic from the canteen and starting projects to plant trees in the local area. Some members of this committee further attended a climate change debate at the town hall to demonstrate to the community Brookfield’s support for the town to make progressive changes in a bid to improve the environment within Chesterfield. This debate offered insight into issues that needed to be tackled and inspired these students to take matters into their own hands, evident in the formation of the Environmental Committee. One example of an active change made by the BPFA, Brookfield Parents and Friends Association, has been the implementation of new water fountains within the school in the hope of encouraging students to bring reusable water bottles to school instead of buying a new plastic one everyday, which the Environmental Committee aims to build upon.

Sixth form students have been given a selection of opportunities to progress their career paths. The Brookfield Enrichment programme (the BE programme for short) is a way to provide students with a future career path. Some of these BE programmes include the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, S40 Local journalism and supporting lessons at Brookfield or a local primary school. Also, on the agenda are running the school Environment Group and Young Enterprise – more on which follows!

These small term goals will ultimately lead to long term results by reducing the school’s waste and promoting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. The students within the group and in the lower years also hope to make a visible difference to the amount of litter on school grounds and in the surrounding area through organised litter picks. The drive of these students is admirable and will make a significant difference to the community and the image that Brookfield presents, hopefully strengthening ties between the school and the community.

Brookfield Year 12 Young Enterprise competition up and running! Young Enterprise is a national scheme allowing students up and down the country to innovate, create, and express themselves in the business world - and it’s a key BE opportunity for students at Brookfield. Overseen by Mr Taylor in the business department, teams of students create products, market them and - best of all - sell them to the general public in any way they please. Not only do students keep all profits from the award, they also gain valuable experience in business, preparing them for the future. With help from senior members of local businesses and Mr Taylor, this year’s Y12 edition is coming along nicely with both teams having products in the pipeline as well as ethical objectives in mind. EcoEssentials' idea is to create personalised handmade coasters, meaning they appeal to everybody; they will also offer seasonal coasters such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day specials. As well as this, EcoEssentials will offer straws made out of grass to help the environment. Sourced from a family run business in Zimbabwe, joint Managing Director Harry O’Neill’s goal is to sell these straws to local restaurants as a replacement for the currently used plastic straws which harm the environment. The students have already started marketing the business with Instagram (@ecoessentialsye) and Facebook accounts (@Eco Essential). The aim of Urban Jars is to get more people involve in the declining hobby of gardening and to create a product that can be universal in most home environments. Selling glass jar plant decorations, succulent flowers and personalised bundles, the business’ plan is to make people more aware of climate change. Unlike EcoEssentials, Urban Jars are sourcing their products from local businesses in order to reduce their carbon footprint. They also have an Instagram account (@urban.jars). Text: James Sadler

Cover Artist

The Art of Running Meet cover artist Dave Elsom Words: Annie French Images: Dave Elsom

T

he artist Dave Elsom recently had his first solo exhibition at West Studios, and I was fortunate enough to have spent some time with him discussing Art and running, interests that we both have in common. Dave told me that as a child he was always drawing and doodling, creating cartoons and comic books. His mum tried to encourage him by taking him on a visit to the Winchester School of Art. ‘That was my idea of hell, with all those posh kids. That’s the thing with art, it’s perceived as a middle-class thing when you look at the price of paintings, and it’s only for those who can afford them. The magic for me is when you get a street artist who is recognised as a legitimate artist. People like Phlegm who exhibited in Sheffield, this was one of the best exhibitions that I have ever been to” AF: How did you get back into art as an adult? DE: It was when my daughter was really young, her drawings were incredible. It got me thinking about my own drawings. I went to night school at Hillsborough College and signed up for a drawing and painting course. I felt like a fish out of water in the first three weeks, I was doing what I had been taught at school, tiny life-like drawings. Then my tutor got hold of my hand and made me draw really big circles and got me drawing really loosely. At the end of the ten weeks, I had really come on and with her encouragement I signed up for another course doing graphic design. Unfortunately, the college could not get enough students to run that course, but had places on their print making course. I loved it from the start and continued onto a second ten-week block. Like many colleges, with funding being cut for adult learners, the course came to an end.

Page 48

AF: So how did the running theme start? DE: Running has been my refuge from the world, I have struggled with mental health and depression. One of my problems is that I cannot switch my brain off, everyone I know who is creative has the same problem, it the price you pay. Running has been my go-to, if I’m having a particularly bad time, it’s not always easy to go out and run, but I always feel the benefits when I do. I have also had the support from Ian and Baz at Art and Minds, based in Killamarsh. I now help out at the centre as much as I can. Dave runs with the Clowne running club and runs most Saturday mornings at the Rother Valley park run. The theme of his recent exhibition at West Studios was mainly running. With a combination of lino cut prints and photography. Dave’s experimental style is quite obvious with his silhouetted photographs of runners and typography layered over them, using quotes of fellow runners describing what running means to them. DE: What I really like about running is finding the rhythm of your breathing and the meditative thud from your shoes. Art provides a similar feeling, so I wanted to combine the two. Confidence comes from experimenting with my art, this has influenced my running challenges that I have taken on. I completed a couple of marathons and now enter ultra-events, last year I did a 24-hour race. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do these things a few years ago. AF: So, you have survived your first solo exhibition and an ultra-marathon, what next? DE: I want to continue with the running theme, people appear to like that. I like the idea of getting the message out there about the benefits of running, so if I can

www.s40local.co.uk

do that through my art everyone wins. I need to work full time as my artwork doesn’t pay the bills, so I run the occasional weekend workshops at West Studios. I want to develop my Etsy shop, but any sales just go back into buying new materials. AF: You’ve mentioned Art and Minds, how did you get involved with them? DE: I donated an old CD rack which I thought would be useful for an art project, we got chatting and they followed me on Instagram and gave me loads of encouragement. It’s another refuge for me, at weekends when I have my daughter we go in and have cup of tea and a chat, mess around with my artwork. Ian is one in a million, he’s worth more than ten doctors, I just love what they do and all the support they give to people. Talking to Dave has been an absolute pleasure, he has restored my faith in the Art World as it’s not all about exhibitions and making money. We have so many wonderful organisations and talented creative people in our town, they should be celebrated and recognised. If you have an art storey and would like a cuppa and a chat, please contact us at S41 Local. News The £600 Toddle Wingerworth mothers and toddlers completed a sponsored walk on the 2nd July. The walk was organised by Wingerworth Tots & Todlers and was a huge success raising £602 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital! Mothers and toddlers walked from the parish rooms in Wingerworth, down New Road, past Deerpark school then past the ponds and onto finish at the park! The children stayed in the park to play on the equipment and enjoy some snacks. Nicola Ambler from Brampton says, "Although the walk was in Wingerworth, and myself, Alfie and the rest of our family live in Brampton, I’ve run the playgroup for numerous years and since Alfie’s shock diagnosis of severe haemophilia last year, the children’s hospital very quickly became Alfie’s lifeline. Raising awareness and funds for the hospital is extremely important to us and we’d just like to say how grateful we are to everyone who took part in the day."

Running in Memory of Kimberley Words: Dave Trickett "I am running the New York Marathon on 3 November 2019. "I have been fund raising for the last 10 years having entered 12 marathons including the Atlantic Challenge, London, Brighton, Chesterfield and Great North. I have been doing this because I was so grateful for the holistic care provided to my daughter Kimberley throughout the 2 year period of illness. "Kimberley was initially diagnosed with cancer when she was 6 years old and underwent treatment for a number of years. Following the series of treatments, Kimberley was diagnosed with breast cancer on her 18th birthday and was referred to Weston Park Hospital where the Teenage Cancer Trust is based." Page 50

News It's All Happening At The Old Grammar School

Titanic - Refloated

Annual Remembrance Service 2019: Organised by the Old Cestrefeldians' (OC) Trust, takes place at the Old Grammar School, Sheffield Road, Monday 11 November at 10.45am, the service will be conducted by our fellow OC, the Right Rev. Bill Godfrey, the former Bishop of Peru, seen below left with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

More than 100 years since its sinking, RMS Titanic is being refloated by Chesterfield Operatic Society at the Pomegranate Theatre. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the “unsinkable ship” slowly sank after hitting an iceberg. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century in which 1,517 people, young and old lost their lives. Based on real people, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and moving production, focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own.

It will include readings of war poems and a special dedication to OC brothers, 'Jock' and Billy Wilson, who died while serving in the RAF during WW2. We will also have The Last Post played before the two minutes silence at 11am. Descendants of any OCs who gave their lives in the service of their country are also cordially invited. There will be time afterwards to catch up with old friends over a cup of coffee. Trust membership forms will be available, if you wish to support our future activities. Copies of Philip Riden's book A History of Chesterfield Grammar School will also be available for sale on the day price £35. Cash or cheque only. OCs ties will also be available at £10 each. Commemorating William E Glister: The Trust has also commissioned a brass plaque to commemorate the outstanding headship of W.E.Glister (affectionately known as 'The Boss) from 1947 to 1968, which will be placed on the wall immediately outside his former study at Sheffield Road. It will join the plaques to other previous Heads and, very appropriately, will be unveiled at around 11.30am by Ms Sheila Glister, the Head's daughter, who is now in her 80s and lives in Sheffield. Exhibition - The Boys Are Back In School: In the 425th year since we were founded, and in conjunction with the Sheffield Road West Studios, we have also arranged a small exhibition of Chesterfield School artefacts and memorabilia. This will take place in the Gallery area and run from Monday 11 November to Friday 13 December. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. Tea/coffee available while you browse. Offers of items of interest are invited. Please email Frank at frankdukes70@aol.com. Page 52

Operatic society chair Sarah Morrell, who plays the role of aspiring middleaged American Alice Beane, says the musical is full of stunning music. “While the story is one of tragedy,” she said, “the musical itself tells the story of the passengers’ hopes of a new life in America. With a cast of nearly 50, I am sure audiences will love this dramatic production.” Directed by Carole Copeland, Nick Stacey as musical director and Alison Doram as choreographer, Titanic sails at the Pomegranate from November 20 to 23 with a Saturday matinee. Early bird tickets (£16) are available from chesterfieldoperaticsociety.com or £17.40 when the theatre box office opens on October 31.

Chesterfield Garland Dancers

Fancy a go at Garland Dancing? Chesterfield Garland Dancers are always keen to welcome new dancers and musicians to their sessions throughout October and November. Kathy Farr says “If new dancers want to give us a try this autumn, it gives them time to learn some of our dances over the winter months. The dancing out season starts in May, but we practice every week from October to Easter. The main benefits of taking part are learning a new set of skills … definitely good for your brain, especially as you get older!... and also having some weekly dancing exercise which is highly recommended for people who sit at a desk all day at work, as I do. We are a lovely group of sociable people who also enjoy keeping a bit of our heritage alive. I joined

the group two years ago as part of my plan to try new things now that my children have moved on to student life. Wearing a colourful costume and jangling bells all adds to the fun of the experience! We practise at the Methodist Church Hall, Jawbones Hill, Derby Road, Chesterfield, S40 2EN, on Tuesday evenings 7:30 to 9:30pm, September to April. New members (female dancers and male or female musicians) are always welcome. If you’d like to come along, please contact us first at enquiry@chesterfieldgarland. org.uk For more information, see our website www. chesterfieldgarland.org.uk or contact Katrina on 07545 774592. From Tin Tabernacle to Church Centre Re-roofing Project

Andy Holmes (Beighton Construction Ltd), Rev. Tracey Harris (Church Minister), June Partington (Fundraiser), Barry Hodgson (Merlin Design and Survey Partnership).

There has been a Methodist or Wesleyan church on the site of Storrs Road Methodist Church since the early 19th Century, and the first chapel, a corrugated metal building, was opened in 1841, known locally as the ‘tin tabernacle’. It closed for a while, reopened later in the century by Thomas Irving, a local agricultural merchant. He handed the building over to the Bible Christians who did ‘glorious work’ but it then closed again due, it is said, to the influence of false teaching. In 1892, a small band of leaders and helpers from Old Hall Road Wesleyan Methodist Church took over the building, established a congregation and Sunday School and the work prospered. On 18th July 1899, the foundation stone of the present church building was laid and completed on the 21st Feb, 1900 with a dedication service. This was followed in the early 1900s with the erection of a wooden building where the church centre building now stands, known as the Schoolroom. This was used for youth work, church groups, and social events. In the 1960s this wooden structure was coming to the end of its useful life and it was agreed to build a Community Hall in co-operation with the Local Authority and other local organisations. The land was leased by the church for a peppercorn rent for 28 years on the understanding that at the end of the lease the building would revert to the control of the Methodist Church. The foundation stone was laid on the 6th Nov 1971 by Mr. Phillip Robinson and opened on the 24

March, 1973, by His Grace the Duke of Devonshire. The building was handed back to the Methodist Church on the 25 March 1999 and a rededication service held on the 18 April. A re-development of the church interior was completed in December 2006 and a refurbishment of the church centre interior was completed in 2012. In 2016/17, a Re-roofing Project for the church centre was started and with the help of Merlin Design and Survey Partnership, tenders were sought and Beighton Construction Ltd appointed. Work started on the 16 Sept 2019, and should be completed by the beginning of Nov. June Partington says 'We've received generous support from fund holders towards the project costs, the Duke of Devonshire’s Charitable Trust, The Chesterfield Methodist Circuit, Allchurches Trust Limited, The Garfield Weston Foundation, Viridor Credits, Councillor J. Boult’s Community Leadership Scheme, plus church members and friends, local fundraising events supported by Chatsworth Road businesses, and all who've supported us". The Church Centre is a busy, vibrant place with a wide range of activities for the church and local community. This latest project will provide a watertight and improved environment to a building which is a long established, integral part of the Brampton locality and for the benefit of all the church and community groups who meet there.

Garden Tips

November Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind. Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seedheads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter. Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more. Transition Chesterfield Potato Day The twelfth annual Transition Chesterfield Potato Day will take place on Saturday 25th January 2020 at The Pavements Shopping Centre in the town centre. To get the best prices consider making an online pre-order before 3rd December 2019 for your seed potatoes, onion and shallot sets, garlic bulbs, pea and bean seeds etc. see our website: www.potatoday.org.uk or text 07834 838076 with your name and address for the 2020 leaflet and order form.

Come on in .. the water's lovely! We meet Chesterfield Swimming Club who are doing a fantastic job of developing the squad.

I

Words: Paul Chapman Images: Chesterfield SC

t’s a cold and wet Sunday evening but inside it’s warm and wet. I’m at Queen’s Park Sports Centre meeting with Peter Bradshaw whose daughter, Ellie, swims with the Chesterfield Swimming Club. Peter is responsible for social media for the club looking after Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and also picks up the tab for marketing activity. “I love swimming,” says Peter, “but it’s not convenient for me to swim too much at the moment, I’m hoping to join masters when my lifestyle will allow it.” It’s 5:30pm and the pool and poolside at Queen’s Park is bustling with activity. The Academy swimmers, the youngest group, are well represented in half of the pool, moving across the lanes the ages increase as does the speed! The Chesterfield Swimming Club was established in the early 1980s in its present form but existed before this having used Walton Dam and the old open-air swimming pool that used to be on the site now occupied by Chatsworth Business Park. The club cater for all ages, children can start swimming with the ASA School of Splash based at Highfield School on Highfield Land, Newbold up to the age of three. Right now, they have a healthy number, but there’s space for more. The children swim in groups of up to six and the teachers are in the water with the kids. “One of our instructors is Jo Fish” adds Peter, “great name for a swimming coach! These classes are for beginners and early improvers, it gives them confidence in water and the right skills to begin to learn to swim. Groups have a great deal of focus and Jo aims to bring young children on as quickly as possible.” After Splash, children start local authority lessons, the club used to do this but now they hand children over to the council who teach them through to stage eight which is ability based, children are typically 8 to 10 years old when they reach this level. Once a child achieves stage eight, they have the option to continue with the local authority until they each stage ten or more typically children come over to the Chesterfield Swimming Club.

Page 60

Here the focus is on the competitive side of swimming. Coaches start to cover all elements of technique from entering the water, diving, through stroke technique, turns, finishes, training away from the pool, land training to focus on strength and conditioning and also cover nutrition. “We have experts come in and do talks and presentations, we also have goal setting sessions which focus on a plan for each individual, we cover swimmers’ personal targets and the training they need to achieve it. “It’s not all about winning though”, adds Peter, “it’s about developing the young person and improving at whatever level they perform at, a very individual approach.”

“I love the way people encourage us to perform and the support we get." Oliver Hadfield

Recently the club has some celebrated successes. Sophie Baker won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the recent National Championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. Amber Downham came away from the British Championships in Glasgow with two silvers for 100m and 200m freestyle and a bronze in the 200m individual medley. At the Open Water National, held at Rotherham’s Thrybergh Country Park, Chloe Stennett took silver in the 5k, she is presently one of the top swimmers in the country in her age group at the distances in which she competes. “The coaches at the club are fantastic”, says Peter, “we have three main coaches, Mark Tanner is head coach and has been with the club for eight years, Max Ward is a reasonably new coach at the club, and used to swim with them and Ian Richards

When I met, the fund-raising community was meeting, a large group and I’m pleased to report that as I write Matt Randall, landlord from The Rose and Crown has just cycled solo from Morecombe, covering the 170 mile coast to coast route. Raising over £500 in much needed funds for the club, where his daughter swims. Chesterfield Swimming Club meet on Sunday evenings to train plus use the pool at Queen’s Park outside of public times. If you have children who want to get into swimming or you simply want to train and improve, the club would love to hear from you. So, what’s the best thing about the club I ask Peter? “It’s an extension to the family, a nice escape for children, a club with a great social side but one with expertise at its heart.” As we chatted Oliver, a young person who swims with the club came over to chat, so I asked him what he loved about the club? “Gala events” he answered. “I love the way people encourage us to perform and the support we get. I’ve been in the club three years now and am moving from county to regional level.” Proof that the club works.

Chloe Stennett - Silver at the National Open Water

“The club helps develop young children, giving them experiences and learning that will be helpful as they progress through life” Peter enthuses.

Jack Blair, Amber Downham (medal winner) and Chloe Stennett, all qualifiers at the British Champioships.

“In addition, the club has some dedicated parents who provide support, and we have a number of junior swimmers who are taking coaching qualifications.

Sophie Baker - Gold at the Swin England Champioships

is an ex water polo coach playing his part it taking Sheffield University and England water polo teams to high levels.
