Intro which means that the interesting articles are closer to the front!
Hi and welcome to Christmas It’s only November. I’m one of those that thinks Christmas decs should go up the weekend before Christmas and come down straight after new year ... or before, if I’m back at work.
Also one thing of note is that this is my largest edition yet! A full 100 pages, not all adverts, 45% editorial and hopefully a great read to keep you occupied as you munch on a mince pie!
But in S40 world Ineed to get my head around putting Christmas gift guides, adverts and text together early in October. It also seemed wrong to help the crew at West Studios out with a lift down to St Mary's with the tree for the festival in mid November.
Thanks to John Smith for pointing out my text for Mellors and Kirk’s ‘timeless watches’ apparently he’s got a several like that which are correct twice a day ... funny how when your typing sometimes, what you mean isn’t capture correctly by the words you chose.
By the time this edition is being delivered they'll be three weeks to Christmas, so if your reading this and have not got any presents yet, you need to start!
I’m looking forward to some time off, to chill out for a few days ignoring email and the phone.
We’ve got part two of our gift guide and try to encourage you to support our local independent stores and businesses. A purchase from them makes much more impact than from the World Wide Web. I know the web is easier but in the long run we’ll regret it I'm sure ... no one likes an empty high street.
See you in 2020... is it just me that wants to write ‘vision’ after 2020 every time I write it... come on Specsavers a marketing opportunity there me thinks!
This edition I’ve moved the 'what's on' to the back, just before the regular events, so all the eventy stuff is together

Christmas
Green Christmas. Words: Paul Chapman Main Image: Helen Rowan Photography
C
hristmas is just around the corner and hopefully we'll all get a few days off and some time with the family, eat some food, play some games and perhaps be lucky enough to open a present or two. We put a call out to people to see how we might be able to make some changes and have a slightly more sustainable Christmas. Claire Neale leads the Plastic Free Schools initiative suggests buying people experiences rather than physical gifts, and challenge yourself to cut out Sellotape; use paper which looks good, tied with ribbons Claire says "think really carefully about the wrapping you're using, if it's foil or plastic covered it's really difficult to recycle - do the rip test, if it tears easily it can be recycled" Make your own gift tags from last year's cards. If your clothes have ribbon loops, rather than cutting them out and throwing them away, you could save them and use them to thread through your homemade gift tags.
Christmas decorations that were hand-made in the 1950s and the stories they tell when we see them each year are worth far more than a temporary fashion statement. “How much food do you actually need? It is tradition to buy all of the trimmings, virtually bankrupting ourselves in the process, but 2 million turkeys, 5 million Christmas puddings and over 74 million mince pies are thrown away each year! Think about food, do we always buy too much and never eat it all? Take a stand this year and avoid buying it in the first place.” Kelly Bond from 13 Bends Design will be printing her own Christmas wrapping paper. "Elsie and Jack are making their own wrapping paper this year using spud painted sheets of paper. We are also using ribbon which can be reused, we are adding finishing touches to our special gifts using twigs and leaves which we will hunt for out and about nearer the time."
Second hand and charity shops can be a great source of quirky gifts, giving items an extended life. Does Santa have a 'recycle grotto' where secondhand toys are given to a new owner to love and enjoy ... personally I like to think he does this already, what do you think? Louise suggests "A family a secret (or not so secret) Santa approach to presents. This year we're putting names in a hat of the adults who want to opt in, drawing a name out and only buying for that one person in the group - we've agreed a price limit to keep it reasonable and fair." Emma Knight-Strong suggests we; “Think about decorations; there is a lot of ‘disposable decorating’ as TV or social media tries to convince us to renew our Christmas decorations every year. Go old-school; upcycle and re-use the family decorations; swap decorations with friends and neighbours if you want something new and built to last. My grandmother still has Page 4
Whatever you do over the next few weeks, enjoy it, relax a bit, take some time to go outside, breathe the fresh air, and give yourself some space to prepare for 2020, whatever it might have in store for us. Have a great Christmas and here's to 2020. Paul. www.s40local.co.uk

We are always in search of new travel experiences which would be of interest to our clients. Our favourite latest offering is from Regent Seven Seas Cruises who have recently introduced new local tours connecting passengers to communities through a range of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. A stop off in Bordeuax is elevated from what usually might be a tour of its 18th and 19th century architecture and a tasting of its famous wines, to a traditional dinner in a French family home in the heart of the medieval region. Diners will learn how residents live day-to-day and gain insight into seasonal ingredients, plus they may be bestowed a secret recipe that’s been handed from generation to generation. All tours are complimentary and keep up with the company’s promise to offer a truly unrivalled experience. We continue to develop our knowledge by experiencing destinations through our own eyes. We believe that to confidently recommend a product one has to experience it. We recently joined First Class Holidays to experience a tour across the West coast of Canada, from the vibrant city of Vancouver, through the spectacular Rocky Mountains, to the Columbian Icefields and Athabasca Glacier ending our journey at the Banff National Park. Be inspired by our journey, the full travel blog is available to read on our website.

ebra Menswear is one of Chesterfield's independent businesses. As they approach 34 years in business, having opened their doors in March 1986, owner Stuart Smith, has seen many changes but what hasn’t changed is the level of service and the range of quality gentlemen’s products you’ll find at 17 Holywell Street, to make sure you stand out from the crowd. Stuart Smith had a varied background working in record shops until 1983 when he moved to a fashion shop on Knifesmith Gate. He quickly picked up all the knowledge he needed to set up his own store and took a single unit, a few doors down from the Winding Wheel. “This was at a time when you couldn’t find a retail unit” Stuart explains, “high streets were busy and demand out-stripped supply. “Next clothing had just rebranded from Hepworth’s and there was an explosion in men’s fashion. People wanted something different, men started to pay more attention to their looks, and there was a real aspirational and cultural change.” The fashion chain that Stuart worked for is long gone, but Zebra are still offering the same personal service they set out to provide in 1986. The store is situated next to the Winding Wheel. Dave Towndrow, manager and buyer adds, “people might recall when Zebra was at one end, ‘Jimmy Jones’ our casual store at the other, and sandwiched between the two, Newport Women’s Wear. Newport moved onto Cavendish Street and we converted to the single space we have today.” Dave has worked for Stuart almost since the beginning, he’s not from a traditional clothing industry background but was ‘into his fashion’. Following a serious accident in the building trade, Stuart asked if he wanted to work with him and he’s been part of the furniture ever since. Dave is responsible for buying and uses a rule of thirds to ensure Zebra carry a range that pleases everyone. One third is last season providing staple products, a third take a twist on these for something a bit more unique, and then there is a third of new adventurous lines, with more of a risk. Chloe Sanderson works part time, with experience in both men's and womenswear in retail, and wholesale, previously working in Newport. Stuart has been the full owner since 2005 when his original business partner moved on and since then has had total control of the reins. “Today’s clothing market is fully developed,” he says. “When we started out you had 100% exclusivity on suppliers, people would travel to Chesterfield to visit us as we were the only store that stocked what they wanted.
“The internet has wiped out many businesses, as manufacturers short-cut the supply chain and started selling direct to customers; but without the personal service, without a smile and a friendly greeting. It’s things like this that make shopping with an independent business different. “We have customers who have been shopping with us since we opened. They bought their wedding suits from us, have been back to dress their sons for their weddings and then return for the grand children’s christenings… plus all their casual needs in between! “We have to say a massive thank you to these customers and the loyalty they have given Zebra over the decades.” Stuart loves quality products; he dismisses cheap products with low quality and simply won’t allow anything that’s below par through the door. The stock is mainly European and UK based brands, Barbour, Burlington, Pal Zileri, Nudie Jeans, Remus Uomo, C.P. Company, Edwin Denim, Barker shoes, Saucony originals, to name a few. There are many more in store and it’s very tempting to let myself get distracted and start shopping whilst I’m supposed to be talking business! If you’re looking for Christmas gifts, Zebra have a complete range of clothing, from pants and socks to made to measure suits and everything in between. Barbour beanies at £29.95, Burlington striped socks from £12 and Hom underwear from £25 (for two pairs) look like they’ll be selling well, so you’ll need to be quick off the mark. Zebra also take a pride in being part of the independent business community in the town centre, working with the neighbours, such as Pump and Grind in the summer where they helped with a joint fashion event to raise money for local charities. Zebra is a vibrant store offering an alternative to the ‘sameiness’ of the high street, a laid-back environment where you are served by and greeted by the owners and managers, where customers become regulars, friends. If you are looking for quality men’s clothes and perhaps even some style advice save yourself a trip to Nottingham, Derby, Meadowhall or Sheffield and support your local store. Some Burlington Fair Ilse socks and a pair of Saucony trainers for me please, Santa. Zebra Menswear 17 Holywell Street S41 7SA.

Over the past ten editions our sister magazine, S41 Local, run by Simon Paterson and Bekah Anstey have been engaging local artists to produce one off covers, or they have simply allowed us to use an image they have already produced. When we looked back at the ten editions, we were blown away by how fantastic they were. Something needed to be done, to celebrate this talented bunch of artists who had worked on the covers. We would love to know which is your favourite, but what we'd like to do a little bit more is to give a one off, signed, mounted copy away to one of our lucky readers. All we need you to do is get in touch and let us know which is your most loved cover.

Behind The Business
Suddenly, as if by magic. The shopkeeper appeared. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Ingmans
T
he radio is on, there’s a smell of glue and Andy Ingman is talking passionately about beards and three-piece suits. I’m back at Ingmans Gentlemen's Outfitters, catching up with Andy and Abbey for part two of our discussion about the business.
I love a job where you can have the radio on, something you can’t do in a ‘real job’ as I used to call mine, it creates an environment that’s a bit more human, and through the door in the cobblers area where Andy is most at home. I start with a chat with Abbey Proctor, assistant manager. Abbey has been at Ingmans since opening at Burlington Street. “I love to offer a personal approach to what we do”, says Abbey. “The smaller brands are more exclusive but come without the massive designer price tag, something an independent business can offer, and something our customers love from the fantastic feedback we receive.” Always working towards something new, I’m taken upstairs to check out progress on the ‘dressing room’. “We’ve created a personal wardrobe,” explains Abbey. “Got a wedding coming? Ingman’s can lay out a room of products that match your requirements, brown brogues and grey three piece, no problem. We’ll dress the room and you can spend some time selecting your outfit. “It’s a personal bespoke outfitting service. You can try a great range of quality shirts, ties, suits with a selection of shoes that match, all with a coffee whilst you see what you need to look your best for your special event.” The new service was launched on Friday 8 November with a small party and I can’t help comparing it to Mr Benn, which, for those who don’t know, was a cartoon dating from the 1970s where Mr Benn selects an outfit to try, and is whisked away on a related adventure. Go check out youtube… I never realised how little animation there was in this! Ingman’s have been stocking a range of gentlemen's clothing alongside their shoes since 2004, 15 years ago. Andrew explains that “at first it was a small range, but we’ve expanded over the years to include products from Baileys, Gibson London, Giordano, Guide London, John Victor, Knightsbridge Neckwear, Leonard Silver, Mac Jeans, Olymp Shirts, Peregrine, Tootal, Trapper, Tresanti & Viyella. “I was originally inspired to add the clothing range after reading ‘Gentlemen: A Timeless Fashion' by Bernhard Roetzel. It tells of a time when gentlemen wore beards and dressed in three-piece suits and I decided it was time we started doing attire. “It was a great move, a small range of quality brands, some UK, some European but all quality and small enough to be different.” The clothing is traditional gent, stylish and sophisticated. The range covers all ages, from young to senior years - you might describe it as Peaky Blinders meets country gent.

Behind The Business The success of the introduction of clothing has been supported by Ingmans being selected as finalist in the Chesterfield Retail Awards. Abbey adds “We have a quality feel to what we do but our prices aren’t what you’d expect either. Our suits start from £200, high street prices for something that will be more unique and of a much higher quality. “For instance, the wax jacket from Peregrine as featured in last month’s advert in S40 Local, is £205. A UK brand made in Bristol, with Tom Hardy as their ambassador, set yourself apart from the high street.” The footwear range at Ingmans includes Loake, Joseph Cheaney, Barker, Trickers, Duca del Cosma and La Chapeau. The footwear repair side of the business is flourishing. People of Chesterfield have been using Andy’s services for years and there’s a resurgence in people wanting to avoid waste, so they’re buying better quality and getting things repaired. What gets me whenever I call in is Andy’s attention to detail. He takes time over each job, every one gets the attention it deserves. “What comes in as a simple job might well develop into something that takes time,” he enthuses. “It’s great to see things having an extended life, something destined for the back of the cupboard brought back to life, ‘reloved’ you might say.” The news about the quality of the repairs being done is spreading. “Ingmans is well known outside of Chesterfield,” Andy beams. “We’ve created a niche product that meets demands, we offer consistency and a quality found in very few places today. This has been rewarded by Joseph Cheaney using us for their repairs and we are the only official Barker repairer in the country.” Check out the google reviews for Ingman’s, it’s testament to the hard work the team put in, and Ingman’s offers some fantastic options for those looking for the perfect Christmas gift. Andrew’s passion for his business is summed up in his last comment, “I think my business is the best thing since sliced bread, and I love a bit of banter with the customers.”

For Independence and Supporting the Makers...
Shop Indie Words: Paul Chapman Images: Shop Indie

“It’s through these markets that we met a number of people similar to us, making their own range of quality products, selling them at markets and then packing away until they appear at the next similar event.
Shop Indie isn’t new though, as partners – in life, and in business - Lisa and John, have been in business for ten years as Altered Chic, embracing ecommerce and offering their range of products online from their own web shops and through online platforms such as Etsy and Notonthehighstreet.
“This got us thinking. What if we brought a number of makers together under the same ‘virtual’ roof and sold them together with our products. We started talking to people and it wasn’t long before we had a way to bring these fabulous makers into the public eye. 2018 saw Shop Indie launch online , it was great, response was good but certain products were limited as they are very difficult to sell online.
hop Indie is the new independent name mixing it with the high street big boys of Vicar Lane. Selling gifts, cards, homewares and quirkiness they offer a fantastic range of products from small makers near and far, something that has been made with a bit of love.
Altered Chic is run from a space in the Clocktower Business Centre in Staveley where Claire, Lisa’s sister, is employed to fulfil orders and stay on top of everything needed, a real family business. I like the way Lisa and John work together. Lisa is the creative, she produces her range of cards, wall art, decorations, printed ribbons, laser-cut products, and so on. John is the technical one, sorting out the website, making ecommerce work and also lugging the odd box or two. The pair run the business around their young family, the independence giving them the flexibility that coping with the hectic timetable of events being parents demands of you. Getting the work life balance right, although I’m sure it doesn’t feel like that all the time! “We often take our products out to craft and niche markets,” explains John, “to get some feedback face-to-face from people about what we’re doing and the lines we sell. Page 30
“Candles and scented products typically don’t go well, I suppose it’s difficult to sell these as no one really knows what they smell like, and it’s from here that we started discussing the idea of a physical shop.” The pair started looking for a shop premises in addition to the unit at Clocktower, they spoke to the council to see what might be available, there wasn’t really anything that was a) the right size, b) in the right location and, perhaps most importantly, c) at an affordable rent! “We were then put in touch with the new ownership team at Vicar Lane,” says John. “They were looking for ways of increasing the number of independent retailers in their units, in line with feedback they’d been getting from shoppers. “Vicar Lane put together a lease package that we couldn’t refuse, and we are still extremely thankful to them for helping us make this step onto the high street. We also have Rate Cute close by, another independent retailer, and Vicar Lane
www.s40local.co.uk
are really keen to increase the mix of independents to large retail stores, which will help make Chesterfield town centre more interesting for shoppers.” The pair clearly love what they do, they have taken a brave move to open up a real store selling real products, made by a bunch of really talented people both locally and across the UK. “I like to think we offer something that isn’t just following a trend, our products stand out. When we think about what to stock, we try and place ourselves in the position of the customer, would we like it if we saw it in-store? “The range is more personal, many are made lovingly in small batches, and we also have a selection of products which can be personalised. If you give one of our products as a gift, it feels a bit more thoughtful, more carefully selected perhaps.” If you are a local maker, Lisa and John would love to understand a bit more about your products as they might be just right for their store. Contact details are at the end.
As Christmas approaches, be sure to add Shop Indie as a destination for your gift buying. And if you don’t see anything first time be sure to call in again, as stock and lines change frequently due to the nature of the small numbers in which they are produced. Shop Indie are also promoting the ‘Just A Card’ campaign, which enables you to show your support to independents, as any small purchase - even just a card here and there - can make all the difference to a small business surviving on the high street. I wish them all the best for the venture, and if you do call down to check them out, as always please mention where you heard of them, S40 & S41 Local. or the tastiest local produce for your Christmas meal, not to mention Christmas gift ideas for family and friends – Chesterfield has all you need.
Ibbotson's fruit and veg stall has been standing on Chesterfield market since 1945 and is run by the third generation of the Ibbotson family. They recently merged with Ayres fruit and veg stall and stand on the market six days per week, offering top quality fruit, vegetables and salad produce. Owner Nick Ibbotson says, “We now have much more room to display the produce – meaning we are able to stock more produce and offer more variety for our customers. Their produce is, where possible, sourced locally to reduce the mileage involved and the impact on the environment. Nick says: “We source as much as we can locally – everything is much fresher than you would get in a supermarket. “The big sellers at Christmas are carrots, sprouts and parsnips – people tend to buy them for Christmas lunch whether they like them or not. The ones we have here will have been growing in the ground yesterday and are here on the stall today, ready for you to cook tomorrow.” Chesterfield Market Hall also hosts a variety of stalls to offer you the ingredients for your perfect Christmas, including: W Hodkin Butchers offering a variety of meat and poultry; Lamb’s cupcakes, offering

Christmas cakes, biscuits and traybakes; and the Fruit and Nut Centre selling dried fruits for your cakes and puddings and nuts for after your Christmas meal. The outside of the Market Hall also has Davidson’s Cheese Factor for stocking your Christmas cheeseboard; Thanks a Bunch Flowers and Gifts offering all you need for your festival floral displays and gift ideas. To give you a break from the shopping and the chance to warm up with a hot drink and a mince pie – call into Chesterfield Market Café in the Market Hall. There is a market taking place each day from Thursday 12 December to Monday 24 December (selected traders standing on non-market days) - this includes the usual general markets, the flea market each Thursday and the farmers’ market on Thursday 13 December. There will also be festive-themed artisan markets on Sunday 24 November and Sunday 22 December, held in association with The Market Co, offering the very best produce from local providers as well as unique gifts and crafts. ast month, the community was rocked by the the tragic death of Paula Kingdon. Incredibly, Mrs Kingdon's work at Westfield Infant School spanned her entire forty-year career, from graduation to retirement, and over that time her impact is without measure. The toll the news has taken can be seen on the faces of her colleagues and friends, the families she embraced, and the children she taught and nurtured, whatever their age. Anyone whose life she touched knows what a special woman Paula was. A unique mixture of strength and empathy, vigour and humour, resilience and compassion, she had the ability to put anyone at ease. Able to manage a vast workload, while never too busy to give everyone the time they needed. Relentlessly driven, and yet with such care and attention to detail that, on her retirement, when the students from Brookfield flooded the playground to wish her well, she remembered every single one of them. A force of nature who treated everyone as an individual and, regardless of age, as an equal. After starting at Westfield straight from college in September 1976, Miss Sharples, as she was then known, quickly became an integral part of the school. She credited her teaching assistant, Elaine Graham, with providing the support she needed to settle into her new role, and the two worked together until Mrs Graham retired two years before her in 2014. They remained firm friends, and continued to meet weekly for countryside walks in retirement, along with Mrs Trickett, Mrs O'Sullivan, Miss Harrison, Mrs Fretwell and Mrs Soar, in a group Paula affectionately called 'The Old Bags'. Over the twenty years Paula spent in the classroom, her kindness and charisma made her everyone's favourite teacher. I still remember listening in delight as she shared her love of Liverpool FC and Bruce Springsteen ('Bruciebaby'), and was one of many children entertained by her reading of Flat Stanley. Without needing to implement strict discipline, Paula commanded respect and admiration from her pupils. Paula took the role as head in 1996, and her influence on the running of the school was able to flourish. Her commitment to the school library embodied her belief that every child should have access to books and an opportunity to enjoy them. Working with staff, she established Westfield as an Eco School, Please Mention S40 Local

and was careful to allocate funds from the school budget to improving the grounds and growing vegetables. This project encapsulated some of her core values - the importance of children being outside, and developing practical skills as part of a holistic education. Yet alongside her vision and precise management style, Paula's super power was her huge, seemingly-bottomless heart. Hugs were never in short supply for anyone who walked into her classroom or office, and she engrained in the school an ethos of compassion. Every year at Christmas, she collected money for the local women's refuge, determined to ensure that every child would have presents at Christmas. While donations were being made, the children would sing her favourite carol, Away in a Manger, and Paula could never make it to the end of the song without crying. Maybe it was because of the warmth she emitted that she managed to say the most direct things without causing offence. Never one to mince her words, she had a nononsense eloquence and timeless wisdom which she deployed without warning. And when she did, you felt like a six-year-old
being picked up by your dungaree straps, dusted briskly down, and planted back on your feet. Paula's commitment to her staff, old and new, continued after her retirement in 2016. Still a huge support mechanism for the remaining teachers, her legacy stretched beyond employment. She remained an integral part of the school until her death and, without a doubt, will continue to influence the Westfield Way for many years to come. There is no way of describing the sense of individual and communal loss being experienced at this time. I know to many of us the grief feels more like that of a family member. The combined emotion of the thousands of lives that she not just touched, but significantly impacted, is unprecedented in our community. But when I see the groups huddled at the school gates, tears flowing, arms of comfort wrapped around, I know she continues to bring us together. And one thing is for sure, if Paula could see us now, she would tell us all to stop faffing and get on with it.

Brookfield News
Brookfield News The latest community update from Brookfield Community School Newsletter edited by Brookfield Journalism Group
Brookfield plays an important role educating our young people and prepares them for life in the working world. Many of the events and achievements are celebrated internally and we'll bring you details of school news and keep you aware of developments.
2020 Lesotho Plans This term, Year 12 Brookfield students have been given the opportunity of a lifetime. A new programme has been started by the charity ‘Africa’s Gift’ which will be sending a group of students to the small African nation Lesotho in 2020. The Kingdom of Lesotho is a country, roughly the size of Belgium, completely surrounded by South Africa. It has a population of over two million people and is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres. It gained independence from the British Empire in 1966. The students will go to Lesotho - also known as The Kingdom in the Sky - and will undertake a variety of educational and environmental tasks in partnership with communities, and of course see some beautiful animals and scenery on a safari in a stunning National Park.
The trip will obviously be costly so students will have to raise the £2000 needed to take part. There have already been fundraising efforts by a group of students who had a bake sale, raising nearly £100 in just a single lunchtime. Sam Whitehead, a year 12 student wanting to take part in the trip, described why he wanted to do it. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to truly make an impact on the lives of the communities we are going to visit,” Sam explained. “I’m very excited about this charity trip because it’s a great way to help people. We plan to help teach sustainable farming using the soil they have and without deforestation.” This exciting trip is sure to be an experience never to be forgotten, not to mention the year of fundraising to be able to go there. Good luck to all students taking part. Text: George Harris

Taking in the Tate & More This term has been one filled with exciting trips for Art and Graphics students, many beginning new courses seeking inspiration to support learning. A September London residential enabled A-Level art, graphics and textiles students to gain inspiration and context for their creative artworks. They visited multiple art galleries, namely the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Modern, featuring incredible artists such as Van Gogh and Ed Ruscha. As well as this they also attended the B.P. portrait award, an award given to and coveted by the best artists in Britain. Overall the trip proved informative and inspirational to the students and furthered their understanding upon options and techniques to pursue in their independent studies. In late September sunshine, Brookfield’s year 12 A-level graphic students ventured to Chatsworth to aid their coursework and further their understanding of the brief they were working from: to “Present original design work for stationery, cards or gift wrap that could be sold in Chatsworth’s Orangery or Stables stores.” It needed also to “authentically reflect a visit to Chatsworth’s grounds.” This trip allowed them to contextually understand the type of products purchased upon the Chatsworth grounds as well as take photos of Chatsworth breath-taking sculptures, architecture and flora to serve as inspiration for their creations. After which they began doing their own drawings to reflect their discoveries on the day, whilst still surrounded by the breath-taking sights of Chatsworth. Thankfully the weather proved accommodating and the students attained lots of ideas and context to assist them in their coursework. A perfect autumn visit saw the year 10 GCSE art students take part in a trip to further inspire and mould their artistic studies. Their morning adventure centred on Hepworth Wakefield, an award- winning gallery in West Yorkshire. This features Barbara Hepworth’s greatest sculptures and paintings collected together for the public's viewing. During the afternoon students then visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is a sculpture museum spanning 500-acres of land, as well as holding the prestigious honour of being the first sculpture park in the U.K. Hence the art that was featured has attained historical importance whilst simultaneously being magnificently innovative. The visit provided students with the irreplaceable breadth of work that yielded choice and opportunity in their own creative endeavours. Advertorial
When your English Literature student moans about some of the ‘boring old books’ they have to read at school maybe it is time to explain that in fact it is so much more than just reading a book! It may be time to highlight some of the amazing skills and lessons that are gained by studying for a GCSE in English Literature. We asked Elaine who is our GCSE English Literature specialist why her subject is so important and what it gives to her students. Here is what she said: The study of English literature is still relevant and necessary for the modern GCSE student and helps them make sense of the world around them. Historical texts, the good old classic favourites many of us studied at school, give them a context for today’s society and how some things have changed socially but many concepts and behaviours remain the same. The modern more recent texts help students understand society around them because the subjects are relevant and identifiable to their age and experience.
Books on the syllabus such as ‘A Christmas Carol’ offer all of the above along with a cautionary tale on human kindness. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ examines young love. It also delves into parent child relationships and how hard it can be for different generations to talk to each other. A situation all young people relate to! ‘An Inspector Calls’ offers up thought provoking comments on social care and responsibility - issues that are just as relevant today as when it was first written, and these are just a small selection of the treasure trove of texts on offer on the current GCSE syllabus. Elaine has been teaching Literature, which is also her passion, for over 10 years. She gained a B.A. Hons. in English Literature and truly believes that it helps her students understand the past, present and consider the future, as well as supporting other core subjects such as History, Sociology, Drama, Art and Personal and Social Education.
Even the study of poetry offers a more abstract way of thinking and can encourage students to think outside the box and dare to put their own ideas on what something might mean to them.
Getting her students talking and commenting on other characters and situations through the medium of a literature analysis discussion is never ‘boring’ for them or her!
There are no wrong answers in English Literature; where else do you find that! Literary texts also allow young people to examine key themes such as love, conflict and how people relate to each other as well as political and social issues: giving students experiences of human life in a ‘safe’ way where they can explore their feelings and talk about them because they are referencing it to a character in a book. It can even act as a rehearsal for understanding and adapting to real life situations.
So if your son or daughter says that English literature is ‘boring’ then send them to Elaine so they too can learn to grow, mature and develop a sharp critical mind of their own.

Local Business Hero
Dave Trickett
Over £130k raised and still going strong Words: Paul Chapman Images: Alan Wilkinson
W
e meet up with Local Hero, Dave Trickett, a man who has run 30 plus marathons and half marathons, and in doing so has helped raise over £130,000 for local charities. The motivation behind Dave’s run fest is a sad one though, losing his young daughter to cancer inspired him to help those who might suffer in the future. Kimberley was just six years old when she was first diagnosed with cancer. Treated and cleared of the illness she had ten years of good health before developing breast cancer at the age of 18. Treatment again followed and she started a nursing course at University. She made a good start with her university education but developed a brain tumour and came home for treatment. The illness this time was severe, and Kimberley admitted herself to Ashgate Hospicecare where she spent 5 weeks before sadly losing her battle on 6 July 2009, aged just 20. Kimberley’s family have since been on a massive fund-raising drive which continues to this day. Dave is well known locally for what he does. His parents used to run a nursery at Walton, and as a result he has a love of the outdoors and runs his own landscaping business. Like many people I speak
Page 50
to, within two minutes of chatting you realise you both have so many common acquaintances and begin putting the world of Chesterfield right. Dave and his family started fundraising to support Ashgate Hospicecare and as ten years of fundraising approached, they realised that, with a push, they could burst through the £100,000 mark, which they achieved earlier in the year. Alongside Ashgate Hospicecare, Dave and his family have been supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust, an organisation that played a key role in supporting Kimberley and the family during her illness. As we speak Dave’s fundraising has raised over £30,000 for this charity and there are many more activities planned. “The thing with charity is, many of us simply don’t know who’s out there and what they do until we need them,” says Dave. “MacMillan Nurses do an amazing job, the support I’ve seen first-hand has been fantastic. “The Teenage Cancer Trust also do an amazing job. They treat teenagers, ranging in age from 13 to roughly 26, suffering from cancer at Weston Park, Sheffield, and even being well funded it’s estimated that they only get to treat 50% of those that need treatment, they simply need more help from us to get to everyone.”

Dave after completing the New York marathon 2019.

Page 51
Local Business Hero Dave had run at a younger age, completing the first Chesterfield Marathon at age 23, “I ran with Ron Hill one year, the man behind the brand, he won the Boston Marathon one year and always ran in a string vest!” Dave adds. The families fundraising started 15 years ago with Dave running the Sheffield Half Marathon. This year it’s ten years since Kimberley passed away and Dave wanted to do something special. He’d listened to Chris Evans after he returned from the New York Marathon, and in 2018 Dave contacted the Teenage Cancer Trust to see if they could help him get a place at the largest marathon in the world.
“It was 4:25 when I crossed the finish in Central Park, it was still light, and I was full of beans. “It’s great to have such a supportive family behind me, Ross, Beck, Katy and Kimberleys mum Tracey, not forgetting my Dad, Bob, these lot and the memory of Kimberley inspire me to do what I do.”
There is also a strong family link to New York. Kimberley’s was celebrating her 12th birthday on 11/09/2001 when the terrible events unfolded, from then on she always felt sad that her birthday coincided with such an event. “I did visit Ground Zero whilst I was in New York, the stories people have to tell are incredible, I chatted to a fireman who had been in a building right opposite who describes the day's events as like taking part in a movie. “I also took a ride through Central Park to see the fountain that features in the Friends opening, it’s a place that feels special in so many ways.” On the day of the New York Marathon Dave joined 52,000 other runners from every corner of the world. Things start early, as you need to get to Staten Island either on the ferry or on one of 800 buses that are laid on. Due to the numbers you start in batches of 13 to 15,000 at a time (Chesterfield's recent half marathon was approx. 1,500 runners for comparison) with 20 minutes between each batch. Dave set off at 11am.
So, I asked what’s next? “Having a rest,” Dave answered, and then went on to tell me about a spinning event that's taking place in Queens Park on 23 November, one that somehow, I ended up volunteering to do! Three hours on a spin bike, not so sure it sounds like fun to be honest. Writing after the event I can confirm that I did it together with 40 or so other supporters and have set up a just giving page as below if you’d like to support Dave via me. All funds raised go to The Teenage Cancer Trust in support of Dave’s fundraising. Hats off to Dave, Kimberley's mum Tracey and his family for all their hard work for some great local charities. A true Local Hero.
The course takes you over five bridges, past world known landmarks and finishes with a hill in Central Park. “The crowd carry you round this race. It’s like no other. I’ve done the London Marathon last year and it compares, although I buried my mum, Dorothy, on the Thursday before, so I was inspired to run to celebrate the life she’d lived.”

Twists & Curls at KINK Salon London stylist Mary Pidcock has recently taken over the Silver Scissors Salon on Old Road, refreshing the premises and offering something new, whilst maintaining the same quality personal service for clients both old and new. Mary trained at Vidal Sassoon in London and has a wealth of experience working in a number of quality salons for 25 years, more recently in Cheshire where she has spent the last ten years. Originally from Sheffield she was made aware that the business was for sale, jumped at the opportunity to move closer to home and took over the reins in March this year. “I love a challenge and the time was right for running my own salon,” says Mary. “I love the personal side of hairdressing and working with a team of old and new staff to Old Road, I’m looking forward to greeting people at the KINK Salon.” Mary is joined by Gina Johnson, daughter of the founder of Silver Scissors, with 15 years’ experience and a well-known stylist to customers.

Emma Stevenson, owner of M's says "I picked up the keys to the new shop on 1 November and we've worked hard to have things ready for our opening a few weeks later."
Anthony Hawkins, a ladies and gents stylist, who has worked in town centre salons and comes with 14 years’ experience. All the team are supported by a number of younger up-and-coming stylists including Bailey Wright, previously from Chesterfield town centre salons. As Christmas approaches, we all want to look our best and KINK would love you to call in and let them take care of you. They cater for all ages, male and female, and if you’re after a little incentive to book a consultation, they’re offering a half price Olaplex conditioning treatment for any booking made in December. “We have been well supported by the previous customers of Silver Scissors and we offer treatments at reasonable, affordable prices,” says Mary. “We’re taking bookings for Christmas and are confident you’ll be very pleased with our service, we offer town centre quality but with a little local knowledge, plus you can park a few short steps away from the salon. “We look forward to offering you a warm welcome.” KINK Salon 23 Old Road. Thyme To Eat Go Plastic Free
Kick Start Christmas
Plastic Free Chesterfield are working hard with local businesses to encourage use of single use plastics.
Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir’s Christmas Concert will be held this year on Sunday 15 December, 2:30pm at St. Mary’s and All Saints Church (The Crooked Spire). Why not join them, take the family along and get Christmas off to a festive start! Steven Roberts will be conducting with piano accompaniment from Liz Heath. Prices are adults £12 and students, unemployed and children (under 16) £6. Tickets can be obtained from www.chestphilchoir.org.uk, choir members and Chesterfield TIC.
Thai Thai All Change Under new management 'Thai Thai' is looking forward to a bright future. With Chairat Kongkasmut at the helm, the old Siam Palace at 9 Lordsmith Street just a short walk down from St Mary's Church (the one with the twisted spire) is set to become the go to destination for an authentic taste of Thailand for Chesterfield's good food lovers.
We've talked in a previous edition about the Surfers Against Sewage initiative, where businesses are rewarded for removing three items of single-use plastic such as drinking straws, takeaway cutlery and plastic bags. Greg Hewitt, from Plastic Free Chesterfield, recently presented a Plastic Free award to Thyme to Eat, making them a Plastic Free Champion. Sharon Ocarroll from Thyme to Eat says, "We've looked at many of our key products and cut out the single use plastic, we're using paper straws, degradable take out boxes, paper bags, selling drinks that are not in plastic bottles and providing degradable take-out cutlery. "It's great to support Plastic Free Chesterfield and our certificate and award are proudly displayed inside the cafe." We'll keep you posted on Plastic Free Chesterfield's progress as more businesses step up to the mark and make changes for the good of the environment. Pictured are Val Searson (left) and Tyler Turner (right) with the certifcate and award.
Once you've climbed the steps you are greeted by a Thailand street scene, a restaurant like no other in town. First change is the introduction of a Curry Night every Wednesday. On offer are a range of authentic currys, Gaeng Kiew Wan for instance, which the menu describes as, a choice of meat in an aromatic flavour of green curry paste, coconut milk, aubergines, bamboo shoots, green beans and carrot enhanced with the flavour of kiffir lime leaves and sweet basil - just one of the selection on offer. Trip Advisor comments include; "An interesting journey up the stairs takes you up to a spotless Thai restaurant." "Excellent Thai Food & Other-Worldly Restaurant" Thai Thai 9 Lordsmith Street, S41 7RW. T: 01246 271998 Page 56

Ellipsis Writers
The pieces that make up Jigsaw Words & Image: Rosie Gillingan
"
Onlookers and fellow customers are often curious about us," admits Gaynor Roberts, one of five locally-based individuals who call themselves Ellipsis Writers …. "We come to St Thomas’s Centre Café every other Wednesday morning, we huddle around a table studying documents and papers, and we’re obviously busy doing something important! Perhaps we’re planning a coup d’etat – or something less ambitious such as a children’s tea party! Whatever it is, it’s clearly more than a social gathering." Rosie Gilligan, another member of Ellipsis Writers …, takes up the theme. "People approach us to ask what we’re doing. We’re happy to tell them we’re writers, meeting regularly to help one another with our own work, share ideas and perhaps plan our latest writing project." "Being a writer isn’t easy," Sue Pacey adds. "We spend most of our time alone at home with our thoughts, our notebooks and laptops. Writing can be a lonely experience and without others reading and commenting on what we’ve written, it’s easy to end up producing something secondrate. We enjoy and value our Wednesday morning sessions." Recently, the group have produced an anthology of mainly locally-based short stories and poems, titled Jigsaw. Having used Amazon’s self-publishing facility to produce his own work, Steve Hewitt volunteered to turn the group’s contributions into a physical book. ‘The others asked me to show them how to do it. Now they have the skills to self-publish with Amazon by themselves,’ he says. Work began on Jigsaw in the early part of summer 2018, and there was much to do before the five writers could see and hold a hard copy of their work. "We all wrote stories and poems and then passed them around one another for editing,
Page 58
an important aspect of book publishing," Celia Renshaw, the fifth member of the group, explains. "We read each story, checking everything from spelling and grammar, and we had to decide if there was sufficient range and variety in the stories." "We decided to call ourselves Ellipsis Writers … because we spend so much time discussing minor points of punctuation, such as the ellipsis (…)," Gaynor explains. "We’ve set ourselves high standards." Jigsaw is a joint effort but many of the five have already committed their work to print. Gaynor, writing under the name Gaynor Lynn Taylor, has written two historical novels set in the early Roman Empire: The Herodian Stones and The Cleopatra Papers. A story set in Viking times is planned for publication soon. Sue’s three published novels are influenced by her time as a midwife: Listening to Linnie, A Silent Cradle, and Beyond the Blue Swing Doors. She’s also written a true story, A Voice for Stan, about a local, critically-disabled man’s struggle for rehabilitation and justice. Her latest story is being set in South Africa. Steve’s interest in horror and fantasy led to A Voyage Round My Head, his own collection of short stories, and to a series called Forbidden Knowledge, with the first volume out and the second due later this year, both published using Amazon. Celia is in the process of presenting her novel, based on her great-grandmother’s time in 1870s Sheffield, to publishers. Rosie writes for Reflections Magazine and has had success in selling her short stories to Take a Break’s Fiction Feast magazine. Her work is included in two short story magazines, Scribble and Scrittura, and she’s focussing on writing a novel called The Red-Haired Sisters. Rosie is also an artist and has designed the cover and illustrations for Jigsaw. "Finding somewhere suitable to meet hasn’t been easy," Steve says. "We’ve tried a number of places, but two years ago we decided to give the Café a try. From the first day we were made very welcome. It’s a pleasant and comfortable space to work in, and the food and drink are excellent. Just what we need for all the mental energy we use." Jigsaw, by Ellipsis Writers … Rosie Gilligan, Steve Hewitt, Celia Renshaw, Sue Pacey and Gaynor Lynn Taylor is available on Amazon, and is for sale in Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre at £6.99. And on Thursday 12 December, Ellipsis Writers … will have a stand in the main area in Chesterfield Library, from ten till three o’clock, chatting about their work and selling their books.

Garden Tips
December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. If you have a greenhouse or window sill, it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2020 Potato Day (January 25t). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late spring planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in). Pre-ordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 3rd December 2019.
