2020

Intro Hi and welcome to our Winter edition. The mad rush that is Christmas is over, the New Year has been seen in and things start to feel a bit more, dare I say it, 'normal'. I meet local artist Wynn Ryder in this edition, his work was recently exhibited in West Studios and looked great, documenting people in time and drawing attention to scenes that exist in Chesterfield that many of us may not be aware of. I feel we're being a little rebellious in this edition by meeting up with the people behind local activist group Extinction Rebellion. When I talk to local young people about what matters, many will focus on the environment and our impact upon it. I think it's my job to tell you what local groups are doing so you can make up your own mind. We have an update from Plastic Free Chesterfield and Create Change Chesterfield, both groups are trying to help lessen our impact on the planet by encouraging people locally to make both small and large changes where they can. My 'intention' for the new year is to be a bit more sustainable, be that walking or cycling to the studio, growing some veg at home or buying shampoo in bars and reducing the plastic we use. And before you say it 'but you're using paper?', I struggle with this, but an environmental consultant explained that S40 Local encourages the use of local business, products and services, reducing product miles, encouraging a sense of community, reducing our carbon footprint etc - so I feel a little reassured. My final ask is for your input through 2020. I can't possibly keep up to date with everything going on and the activities, milestones and achievements of local groups, so please get in touch and I'll do my best to share your stories. So, it continues. Happy New Year for 2020. Paul S Chapman.

ynn Ryder exhibited at West Studios in October last year, and his portrait work using paint markers brought new attention to not only his fantastic work but also the strong Northern Soul music scene in Chesterfield. We chat to Wynn and Charlotte Higgins from Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) to find out what inspires him and how the exhibition came to be. Wynn has had an interest in art since he could first draw, he attended Chesterfield art college in 2001 and started to develop his style using layered pen work, a technique that is unique to Wynn and results in a look of layered acrylics. “At the start I attended traditional art education classes to improve my painting skills, but I couldn’t get to grips with paint and brushes. I was much more comfortable using pens,” explains Wynn. “I love painting on scrap pieces of cardboard, rather than throwing boxes away, drawing on them, I love the texture and finish it gives.” Wynn called into a pop-up shop hosted by Public Health, the event focused on mental health and Wynn was introduced to Charlotte Higgins from DVA. Charlotte is involved in ‘Connect to’, a project that connects people in Chesterfield and Dronfield. She previously taught art and was amazed at how Wynn worked. They started talking about Wynn’s work and the possibility of holding an exhibition locally. Wynn jumped at the idea of showing his work. “I had around twenty-five small portraits from previous years' work, and I’d started a project documenting the Northern Soul scene in a series of paintings of people I’ve met and friends I’ve made at Northern Soul nights. It’s a personal and special series of paintings and I decided to use it as the theme for my show.” I feel the Northern Soul scene locally is like many things in Chesterfield - there is a cultural scene, there are things happening, but often they are hidden away... maybe it’s S40 Local’s job to spread the news, like Wynn and his artwork?
“Charlotte’s enthusiasm for my work really ignited a fire in me and inspired me to complete ten new large portraits in the run up to the launch date, some of my best work yet,” says Wynn. Sarah Bell volunteers at DVA, and she helped Wynn and Charlotte get the exhibition set up and spread the news that it was ready to view. At the launch Wynn invited along many of the people featured in his work. They had no idea he was planning the exhibition beforehand. He had never really exhibited in the past and had never seen his work displayed and hanging together. He was apprehensive would people come and look, how would people react, what would they think? He needn’t have been concerned; people’s responses were great. “I was overwhelmed by how positive they were,” says Wynn. “Art is very important to me, I love it. It gives me a purpose,” he explains. And he does it well. It’s testament to the quality of his work that feedback was so positive. Wynn has been supported through the process by DVA. “They gave me the opportunity to be creative and let me work in their office in the town centre. Having a change of environment helped my creativity. “I believe the most valuable thing anyone can give you is their time, so from the bottom of my heart I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to come to my show. Special mention must go to Sarah for her excitement and Charlotte for believing in me,” says Wynn. Wynn is presently working on a number of private commissions and is progressing a book that features the Northern Soul scene, which he hopes to exhibit at soul events in the future. Watch this space for more info. It was a pleasure to chat with Wynn and Charlotte, to see how a little support, time and belief can make a significant change to an individual’s outlook and self-esteem. Wynn Ryder Art
The pieces are all monochrome, black, white and grey. “The work for the exhibition was all based-on photos; I met a photographer on the soul scene and we worked collaboratively on the pictures” Please Mention S40 Local

Business Change
iDeal Carpets is no more.
Welcome to iDeal Flooring! Words & Images: Paul Chapman
T
he same high-quality friendly service you’d expect from our local business remains, but Kevin Howarth from iDeal Flooring is excited to now offer a range of carpets on the roll to take away, and a selection of roll end bargains.
“It’s also nice to be away from the ‘offer syndrome’ where no one ever knows the true price of a product. I keep my prices keen all year round, offer free grippers, door bars and underlay etc on products above £11.99 a square meter. It keeps things simple.”
“The move to 362 Chatsworth Road took place over the Christmas period, we literally picked up the old shop but have added stock to take away. The new unit is larger and much easier to access, I now stock roll ends and a selection of carpets from the showroom direct. No need to order, just roll up, choose what you need, and either take it away, or we can arrange delivery and installation”, explains Kevin.
Kevin still offers an uplift service, where, for a small fee, his installers will remove your old flooring and take away all the rubbish. They also have Snap Finance available which allows you to spread the cost of your new flooring.
The unit is the old Chatsworth Motor Spares unit, next to Crown Decorators Centre and opposite the Curtain Studio. “You can see the back of my unit from the car park at Morrisons, we back straight onto it, so a short walk from the store or drive round and park right outside, there’s loads of parking space right next to the door” says Kevin. The same range of flooring to order is still available and there is no shortage of products, including carpets. There are a wide selection on display in the showroom, plus luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), laminate, engineered wood flooring plus the new addition, of roll stock, roll ends and laminates in store to take away. You may recall us saying back in the summer how Kevin had been at 131 Chatsworth Road development for eight years and set up on his own after a life working for the large carpet and flooring retail chains. He is keen to repeat that “with the wealth and experience from a long life in the flooring trade, I was able to transition to my own store without much pain, although what I never expected was how much more time I’d have at home, as I travelled a lot, and how much I’d feel part of the community. “You build relationships when your customers are nearly all local, do a good job and people recommend you, word starts to spread. Page 8
The thing I noticed is how much like his old showroom the new one looks. Same open ceiling, same white walls, same flooring samples underfoot, just a lot wider and with the new stock to take away on display. “It’s been a busy few weeks getting everything ready and moving across to the new location but I’m very happy with how it’s looking. “People have been very positive about how it looks and feels. It’s also great to be so close to the other home-based stores. People have called into Crown for paint, popped in to browse and ordered new carpet in the same trip, something the old location couldn’t offer. “It’s like a DIY store, flooring, paint and soft furnishings all in one handy location. “If you're a landlord, the new roll stock is very competitively priced so ideal if you have a property that needs completely reflooring.” Kevin is clearly looking forward to life at 362 Chatsworth Road, offering the new additional services and in his new location. If you are looking for new flooring, be sure to call in and, as always, please don’t forget to tell him you saw him in S40 Local! iDeal Flooring 362 Chatsworth Road Chesterfield S40 2DQ

ave and Helen Oxley are the owners of the family business, 1st Class Kitchens, and have been providing quality kitchens to Chesterfield since
As they prepare to celebrate 25 years in business, Helen brings us up-to-date with developments and the latest kitchen technology. “The old, formal house layout of kitchen, separate dining room and formal lounge is becoming outdated,” says Helen. “People today want a central hub in the home, a place where people can come together to eat, live and entertain. “Often, people start looking at new properties with a view to moving, but it’s very often possible to create the home you want by rearranging the space you have. No need to move, much less hassle. “It sounds so simple to knock down a wall and create a large family space, but it takes experience to open up the area effectively. You need to think carefully about layout, storage, lighting, appliance etc, all selected to suit your needs and fit your lifestyle.” Taking out a wall might be all that’s needed to create your dream space, and Helen and Dave have a wealth of experience to see the project through from start to completion. Dave explains, “Taking out a wall might need additional support and we are able to install the necessary RSJ to make sure it meets the required building regulations, so you can rest easy that the work is done professionally and safely.” 1st Class Kitchens are supported by a fulltime team that can cover all the services needed. We’ve mentioned design and building regulations but also on the list are plumbing, drainage, electrical, lighting, gas, Page 12
ventilation, plastering, carpentry, painting, decor, tiling and flooring. They really can take care of every detail, so all you need to do is sit down with Dave at the start to get the plan and design spot on, choose your style of units, finishes, work tops and appliances and look forward to the completed installation. “Today, total integration is the key to effective design,” Helen explains. “Cupboards and drawers designed for specific purposes, integrated hobs and appliances, single appliances that combine jobs, combi-oven-microwaves, washer dryers etc, all help with the layout, space, finish and look of your new kitchen.” “Island kitchens offer huge possibilities to free up space and maximise every inch of the new kitchen, plus make a great place to meet and socialise whilst food prep takes place. All you need to cook can be stored within easy reach, and it really does create a new central hub to the house.” If you’ve been thinking about taking out the wall between your kitchen and dining area, or simply want to replace your tired kitchen, call in to 1st Class Kitchen’s showroom at 456 Derby Road. There is a constantly changing range of units, styles and appliances on display to help you come up with your perfect new kitchen. Dreams can come true with a little help from magic dust sprinkled by Kip’s tutors! Jo bumped into Laura’s parents in a cinema queue a few weeks ago and was thrilled to hear that Laura she is on the last lap of her accountancy training and is planning to take things to the next level. One dream almost achieved, and new dreams on her horizon. Laura’s dreams of becoming an accountant seemed just that …a dream three years ago when she first came to Kip. Her journey began like many others at Kip after the October half term and the first parent/teacher meetings of the year. It had gone well, and she had predicted grades of 5 for her GCSE Maths and English but to get an accountancy apprenticeship she needed a minimum of a 6 in both subjects. Laura was distressed and under tremendous pressure. Jo sat down with her and prepared a specific plan for her Maths and English and introduced her to her tutors, Margery and Sue. Over the next few weeks Laura worked her way through those specific topics that were giving her trouble. By the new year Laura was more relaxed and positive having seen her grades improve, but Margery and Sue kept her focused and helped with her schoolwork as well. Laura came to Kip right through the exam period where she had help with revision planning, time management and exam techniques. Our tutors are very hot on this as many are exam markers in their own right, so they know what to look for to achieve a quick mark increase. They also specialise in exam technique, or how to tackle the exam paper when you sit down nervously and the teacher says’’ Turn the paper over, you may now begin’’. It is a skill that can be learnt and once learnt is an asset for the whole of your life.
We are very protective and caring of our students and Laura’s last session was very emotional. Then came the wait. The long summer holiday stretched before us and exam results day crept ever closer. When the big day arrived for Laura… SEVENs and EIGHTs!!! An amazing result for her and her tutors. Once our exam students have finished, life at Kip continues with those students who aren’t sitting exams and new students are always joining the team. Watching our students develop and grow is a great privilege and to see them blossom is a joy. We invariably get told of the exam results but from then on, our students move onto the big wide world and it is only by chance that we sometimes hear of the longer term results. Jo was thrilled to meet Laura’s parents once more. They were effusive in their praise for their daughter’s achievements, quite rightly, as it had all seemed just a dream to them all three years ago. Now they looked forward to a daughter in a recognised profession with real job security due to her skills. Soon she would be able to do their tax return, they laughed with Jo! So, if you know someone who has a dream but is feeling overwhelmed by the challenge, bring them to Jo at Kip and let them start their journey together with some real support along the way.

Brookfield News
Brookfield News The latest community update from
Brookfield Presents Guys and Dolls 4th to 8th February 2020
Brookfield Community School Edited by Brookfield Journalism Group
A Night At The Movies Brookfield recently hosted its charity dance show, A Night at the Movies, to raise money for Sands, which helps families who have been affected by stillbirth and also helps to reduce the number of neonatal deaths. The process of preparing the show started in July, when ideas about which charity to support were discussed, eventually leading to the students selecting Sands. Dancer Sarah Dave, one of the organisers, said: "The dance show went really well. We chose Sands because we felt as a group of young women it was important to us and we have family connection with the charity. Sands also has a Peter Pan memorial in Chesterfield which inspired the theme of a Night at the Movies. It's a part of the community that we wanted to honour." The Year 13 A-Level Dance Group independently organised the choreography, music and costumes to pull off the tremendous event, as well as co-ordinating rehearsals in their free time to work with members of lower school. A Night at the Movies featured an array of dances and songs from films such as Moulin Rouge, Guardians of the Galaxy and Pitch Perfect, as well as a tribute to the charity, and involved students right through from the year 7 Dance Club to the Sixth Form boys’ dance. Sarah reflected: “We aimed to include both dancers and non-dancers, particularly the boys’ group who worked really hard to pick up the dances, as well as learning how to dance with a partner.” Alison Leigh, dance teacher, added: “I am extremely proud of the hard work of every one of the Y13 students, and a total of £1350 is the highest ever amount raised by a charity dance show. Well done to them all and bring on next year!” Text: Victoria Ruck
Guys And Dolls • Based on a Story and Characters by Damon Runyon • Music and Lyrics by FRANK LOESSER • Book by JO SWERLING and ABE BURROWS • This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (EUROPE) • All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI Europe - www.mtishows.co.uk
Brookfield’s yearly performance is just around the corner, and from the 4th to the 8th of February, the performing arts department will be bringing “Guys and Dolls” to the school stage. The cast has been working hard since September to put together this amazing show, featuring stunning dance numbers and amazing songs, including Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat, as performed in the school’s summer showcase last June. “Guys and Dolls” truly is a classic not to be missed. The story follows gambler Nathan Detroit who is looking to relocate his game and bets that his rival, Sky Masterson, can’t go on a date with Evangelist Sarah Brown; Sky eventually negotiates with her to bring people to her mission in exchange for a date. Each Brookfield production has been a huge success, and “Guys and Dolls” certainly won’t disappoint. Tickets are available to be purchased online at: ticketsource.co.uk/bcs-pa Text: Victoria Ruck

Young Citizens One way in which Brookfield encourages active citizenship and participation is in the Parliament trip for Year 13 politics students, including a fascinating tour of Westminster where we strengthened our political knowledge as well as taking part in a legislation workshop. However, the trip took a surprising turn when we discovered after exiting parliament that there had been a terrorist attack on London Bridge, a very sad turn of events but expertly accommodated by the staff in charge who quickly adjusted our schedule.
We also saw democracy in action when Brookfield hosted an “Any Questions” debate that all students of politics were able to attend. This debate, chaired by Chris Mason and produced by Lisa Jenkinson, had a panel including Richard Burgon, Sir Patrick McLoughlin, Wera Hobhouse and Tommy Sheppard. A thrilling insight into the different views regarding pressing issues was further beneficial for politics students when, after the debate, students were able to meet the politicians and ask their own questions. Text: Amelia Hardwick
Christmas at Brookfield: Some things new, established and re-cycled As all schools should, Brookfield’s community enjoyed celebrating the festive season. The “new” angle – a huge success but not likely to be repeated – was when the crew and presenters of BBC radio’s “Any Questions” took over the hall for its pre-election edition. On the same evening, the Brookfield Parent and Friends Association held its annual Christmas market - and once again it was a resounding success. Relocating to the sports hall this year, all involved agreed that it was a better venue. More than 30 stall-holders, both external providers and students, offered items ranging from jams to jewellery, snapped up by the 300 visitors. The Christmas mood was assured by the school’s performing arts choir, who sang a range of carols. The money raised - £2,300 - will go directly back to the school, to help provide students with ‘extras’ that perhaps the school budget can’t. If you would be interested in supporting the BPFA in any way, please email: bpfa@brookfield.derbyshire.sch.uk. They would love to hear from you! The re-cycled part of proceedings saw the (generally!) welcome return of the staff pantomime, enjoyed by the whole school community on the last day of term. Led and directed by Head of Maths Kevin Styles, a team of willing volunteers recreated the Chesterfield of 1019 in “Jack and the Beanstalk”, the giant’s tumble providing the perfect explanation for our beloved crooked spire. Costumes, lines and jokes were tweaked for new audiences but most of the show was borrowed from panto’s long tradition. Thanks to Cathi Thacker of the BPFA.

Chesterfield XR We chat with Chesterfield Extinction Rebellion to understand why they are fighting for our planet. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Adobe Stock
Page 28
www.s40local.co.uk
X
R, or Extinction Rebellion to use their full name, have a growing number of supporters who believe that the world we inhabit is not an endless resource to be used and abused, and it’s down to us to make some changes to ensure that future generations can enjoy a long time as custodians. XR have gained notoriety for their recent protests in London, where their profile has been raised through peaceful action, bringing traffic in the city to standstill. A poignant comment I heard came from radio and TV presenter Chris Evans on his morning breakfast show. He mentioned how clean and peaceful the city of London was without the traffic. It was a pleasant place to be and people occupied the streets and moved about without any difficulty. Some commented how close together parts of the city are when you can walk without the noise and pollution affecting your personal wellbeing. Children get it, but it’s our actions today that will have a greater impact on their futures. When XR went into Spire Juniors to explain who they are and why they act, they were met by suggestions from the children including: a pool of electric cars, use one from the pool when you need it; and about how they love wildlife and creatures and want to save them all. In past S40 Locals, when we have asked young people of senior school age to contribute articles to the magazine, many of the topics considered and published - have focused on the environment and climate change. Whatever your views, 97% of scientists now agree that our planet is changing, and we are the cause, so I feel it’s right to talk about XR and let you make your own decision. The group are active locally and trying to raise awareness of the issues we face; I am meeting Michelle Cadet-Rose and Colin Harrison from Chesterfield XR. “People think it’s about getting arrested” says Michelle, “but that’s not the case at all, for every single person that does get arrested there are ten that do not. “Not everyone is out there demonstrating. We have support from many people, doctors, lawyers, senior people, young people and this support comes in many ways, behind the scenes, nonviolent directaction training, legal support training, social media support etc to name a few. “Colin and I have taken part in events locally and in London where the depth of support has been amazing.”
What exactly is XR? “XR is a rebellion against us becoming extinct.” Scientists say we are heading for a disaster quite quickly; our Government want carbon neutrality by 2050 but the scientists say we need to act much sooner. “The scientists say there is a ‘tipping point’, a point where we see a change in our environment that cannot be reversed, this is when our carbon production from gases and waste exceeds the rate at which the planet can deal with it”. “30 years ago, scientists made predictions about signs on climate change that would be apparent by 2050, but these signs are here today, 30 years earlier than forecast.” Michelle continues, “the things I take from XR are the facts: sea levels are changing, coastal areas are being affected now, people crises exist as people migrate inland and towards the global north. “More locally, we see widespread repeats of ‘once in a lifetime floods’ in Catcliffe, and vast fires in the Peak District. Signs that things are changing.” XR have no political affiliation, they are completely aimed at the environmental crisis and promote love and understanding. They are nonviolent in every way and have no single leader, people take positions within the group, it’s more like a community where people take roles that suit them and contribute overall in the end goals, which are to: 1. Tell the truth and repeat what the scientists are saying 2. Act now 3. Form Citizens Assemblies The group believe in deliberative democracy, a form of democracy in which deliberation is central to decision-making and in groups that represent all demographics. How have XR acted locally? In Chesterfield, the group have taken action against Derbyshire County over pensions investment choices. They have “photo-bombed” a polar bear (apparently not a real one) used as a festive attraction by Chesterfield Borough Council on Vicar Lane, to highlight the bear's environments disappearing; and most recently choregraphed a routine next to Hornsbridge Roundabout to raise awareness of traffic pollution related deaths. What is the best response an XR action can have? “For people to realise that the crisis is real,” answers Michelle, “to look at the science that’s out there and make some choices about what difference can be made personally”.

Page 29
Community “We need local and national government to make positive change. For instance, we see councils declaring climate emergencies but then agreeing new airports”. “We need real infrastructure change, citizens' assemblies to help deliver localism, solutions that meet the immediate needs of the communities we live in. Give people the background info they need to consider how they can make a change.” “There are some pockets of excellence that already exist. From these groups, ideas result that are implemented and can be replicated. In Europe, some citizens have agreed to pay more tax to fund local change as they see the immediate outcome and are prepared to pay for it.” Locally there are a number of organisations that exist and to some extent share common aims Plastic Free Chesterfield, Transition Chesterfield, the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign and Create Change, for instance. I can understand how some people may not want to be associated with XR, they don’t want to appear militant. Michelle assures me they are not trying to be difficult but sometimes you need to make a step change and raise awareness … and it might be a bit painful for some for a short while. “Some people’s view is that XR won’t make a difference, but what if no one took a stance? All we are doing is simply trying to raise awareness and would welcome anyone to get involved. People can bring whatever skills they have to help the cause”. “XR brings people together, we meet on the first Tuesday of the month at Monkey Park and if you want to be part of the change, drop us an email or search us out on FB.” In January and February, the film ‘2040’ will be shown locally. It depicts what life could look like if we successfully make the changes necessary in line with scientific suggestions; and on 21 March 2020, XR will be holding a fundraising evening at the Phoenix Room, Chester Street. If people want to help but don’t want to be activists, XR hold introductory sessions on the first Tuesday of each month, at 6:30pm, before their usual meeting at Monkey Park. That way you can find out what they're like and see if you want to become more involved - they have all sorts of subgroups for different activities. XRChesterfieldandNEDerbyshire XRCaNED

Some Sample Facts • The climate is extremely complicated; a 1.5 degree rise in global temperature doesn't mean everywhere will get slightly warmer, as the air over land masses will heat up considerably more than that over the oceans; • The current disruption to local weather (droughts in Australia, floods in Indonesia, temperatures well above freezing in Moscow etc.) is exactly what was predicted by climate scientists - it's just happening much, much sooner than anticipated; • Subsidies to fossil fuel industries in the UK are over £10 billion a year; • The world's insect population has fallen by about 60% since the 1970s; you might not like insects, but they are essential for all life on earth. • Lake Chad in Africa has reduced to 10% of it's previous size in the last 50 years; • At current rates of warming, all the world's coral reefs are likely to die in the lives of people alive today; • 1% of British residents are responsible for nearly a fifth of all oversees flights; the 10% most frequent British flyers took more than half of all international flights in 2018. 48% of the population did not take a single flight abroad in the last year; • The 11 warmest years ever recorded have all occurred since 2002; • It is predicted that all New Zealand's 3000 glaciers will disappear completely by 2100; • Domestic CO2 emissions have fallen 27% in the UK between 1990 and 2014; however, once imports from trade in goods is included this drops to only an 11% - and excludes shipping and aviation!

Park Gate Stone Circle Ancient sites and artefacts near Chesterfield Words & Images: Colin Harrison
W
e know about many stone circles to the west of Chesterfield, although not all are in good condition - rather wonderfully, there's one near Eyam that consists of a single stone. Park Gate, on the far side of Beeley Moor (about 6½ miles from Storrs Road), is in relatively good condition, at least for something built in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age (so about 5000 years old) and on an exposed moor. Most of the stones are visible, but like a lot of these sites, some are hidden by vegetation; it's about 14 yards across, and not particularly circular, which is around the normal size and shape for local circles. To get there, leave Chesterfield on the Chatsworth Road, going up the hill until you reach the turning for Holymoor Road, turn left and head towards the junction with Loads Road, opposite the park. Here you have a choice of two challenging climbs, Loads Road or Harewood Road both of which are usually fairly quiet. Turn right to start the climb up Loads Road. You will eventually descend to a bridge over the start of the River Hipper, continue to climb beyond this until a small road crosses the one you're on, where you need to turn right again. OR: going straight on at the park in Holymoorside, up the hill past the Bulls Head will take you up Harewood Road until you meet the crossroad junction as below where from Harewood Road you go straight across. This road joins another one coming from the left; turn right and, a few hundred yards along, where the road turns sharp left, there is a clear track on the right (there are often several cars parked there or on the left of the road). This track is very rough in places, with deep potholes that can be full of water; mountain bikes should be fine, those with road tyres definitely not and intermediates OK with care. Go along the track for about 500 yards, to the second wooden gate on your right. There are steps in the wall next to it; climb over these and walk up the stone surfaced path for about 350 yards, looking for some vehicle tracks on the right (just before the very brow of the hill). Go along these for about 100 yards and you'll see, on your left, some of the larger, more upright stones of the circle – there are some paths through the heather to it (the trees to your left also form a line pointing roughly to the circle). Although this is open access land, in spring and early summer there might be ground nesting birds in the area, so please don't leave the tracks. Given the number of stone circles - over 20 are currently known about within 10 miles or so of Chatsworth House - it's possible that the actual act of building them was of importance, as it's not unusual to find several close together. Larger circles, such as Arbor Low, a couple of miles from Youlgreave, might have had more spiritual or ritual significance. The fact is, for all the speculation about such places, including well-known sites like Stonehenge or The Ring of Brodga in the Orkneys, we really don't know what they meant or were used for. Stone circles are found widely across Europe and in parts of Africa, so may have had different significance for different people and cultures. What is sure is that many of those nearby are in wonderful landscapes, accessed by quiet roads with few obstructions by way of hedges or fences, allowing far-reaching views and providing a link to a mysterious past and beliefs we can hardly start to imagine. Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk
The circle is shown on OS maps (Landranger 119 or OS Explorer OL 24, map reference is SK 2803 6853) but isn't named. Useful web sites: Megalithic Portal: www.megalithic.co.uk Derbyshire Heritage: www. derbyshireheritage.co.uk

Garden Tips
Winter Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor, sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or windowsill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though - only plan for plants where there’s space. 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. 10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire into a container, and put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2020 Potato Day (January 25th). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late spring planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in).
