The Simple Things. It's very easy to focus on the next task, the 'to do' list, the laundry, the lists, but how many of those lists focus on ourselves, our health, wellbeing, nutrition ... even our sleep? Maybe you're lucky and have the perfect balance, time for you, not too much time at work, time for the family and time to relax ... I suspect most of you reading this are closer to the former. The cover image was snapped whilst out for a run around Linacre reservoirs on the day when we had a dusting of snow. It's moments like these that I think are worth savouring, time to clear my head ... my wife would say 'it doesn't take much to do that!' I know many people don't make space for down time and in this edition we catch up with Jason Cotton who's tirelessly working to ensure Men-Talk gets to as many people as possible to help with mental health across town… and it's not just for men anymore, with his team he's also created groups for women and teens. Also, I recently met Derbyshire Voluntary Action who are launching a new initiative which hopes to bring services together in a single Community Hub, a great project with big ambitions to improve access to services. I hope you enjoy all the usual stuff, and if you're not already doing it, try to create a bit of down time each day to reflect and give your mind time to relax... who knows what you might find out about yourself! Enjoy. Paul S Chapman.

Men • Fem • Teen TALK Words: Paul Chapman Images: Jason Cotton
Y
ou may recall we met Jason Cotton in June last year. He and his friend, Frazer Longford, were running Men-Talk sessions at Royal Mail, where they work, and in the community from a base in the Parish Hall, Stonegravels. This month we’re catching up with Jason again to see what has happened since. It’s been an amazing six months, with services expanded, and four external awards received including Peak FMs ‘Community Hero’, The BBC/SYCFs ‘Outstanding Champion’, The Voluntary Sector's ‘Most Innovative Project’ and the Derbyshire Times 'Business Excellence Award for Community Contribution’. Testament to the work Jason and the rest of the team have put in, and the impact that work has had locally. Men-Talk was instigated following the suicide of one of Frazer’s friends and a realisation that for many men, when they feel at their lowest, they often feel they don’t have anyone to talk to. In recognition of this Frazer booked a meeting room at work, invited all the men in the office along and told his story. He said that if anyone ever felt like that, they could talk to him. Jason was one of those colleagues who was going through a tough time. Having not spoken to anyone about his situation, he realised that as time went on, he was experiencing suicidal ideation, feeling overwhelmed with stress and depression, thinking about suicide more and more. He approached Frazer, shared his story and felt immediately better and much more positive. And so, on the back of this revelation, they decided to help others by setting up the Men-Talk sessions; providing a safe and confidential platform for guys to speak openly without stigma and fear of judgement. The sessions have since moved to the Ernie Moss meeting room @The Hub, located to the rear of the Proact stadium , from 7pm to 9pm every second Thursday of the month. You just drive round to the back of the stadium, where there’s plenty of parking, and the meeting rooms are there. The format tends to be; a warm welcome from the team, a chat about the background of Men-Talk from Jason or one of the other team members, and a short talk from a guest speaker, often from a local supportive charity or organisation. Once
the guest speakers have spoken, the meeting becomes an informal chat for men only 18+ where people can feel free to speak or simply listen as others share their stories. Recognising that men aren’t the only ones struggling with mental health problems, the team have now established Fem-Talk, using the same format as the men only sessions but for women. These are in the same place, the Ernie Moss room, but take place on the first Thursday of the month. These sessions, run by Rebecca Tustin and Cath Jones, offer help, support and a safe and confidential place for women to talk.
'You see people's confidence return and lives being changed and that gives me the biggest buzz.' Jason Cotton
Other opportunities to provide support have emerged and the team have run sessions at The Hartington mental health suite at Chesterfield Royal with in-patients. Jason explained, “it’s often difficult to bridge the gap between receiving care from the hospital and returning home to try and cope. The aim of the sessions at the Hartington suite is to provide on-site support, raising awareness of what we have available to people when they return home, to encourage people to come along to the Men-Talk and Fem-Talk sessions, if they need them.” They’ve also run sessions at the Chesterfield FC Football Academy for 16-18 year olds, encouraging young people to talk about their mental health, breaking down stigma and empowering them to take control.
Please Mention S40 Local
Page 7
Health More recently they’ve started Teen-Talk, “a project really close to my heart”, Jason explained. “If we can intervene early, and give young people a chance to talk, with information and support, I feel we can make a real difference. My aim is to work with all sixth forms in Chesterfield. So far, we’re working with Chesterfield College and Brookfield Community School where we deliver assembly speeches, classroom talks and a variety of innovative engagement opportunities reaching out to as many young adults as we can, making our plea and encouraging them to talk about their mental health so they feel empowered enough in crisis to know what to do, to know what to say and to know who to say it too. The Teen-talk programme is mainly but not exclusively for the lads.” The team working in the Teen-Talk programme are: Clare Black, a mum whose son and brother both took their own lives last year. Clare’s story is very powerful for any child considering suicide. Bradley Littlewood, a 20-year-old who has been through some tough times. He came to a MenTalk session, shared his story and talked about his hopes and how he’d like to speak and inspire others. Jason and the Men-Talk team gave him the opportunity to try speaking in a supportive environment and he’s since found his way as a motivational speaker.
It doesn’t matter what the problem or past trauma may be, there's always a solution and once you’re committed to thinking outside the box. Together with help from the local community, you can help make the impossible, possible. The future is looking bright as Men-Talk grows and diversifies, expanding its awareness campaign services, integrating mental health champions into gyms, workplaces and colleges, partnering with even more local businesses and service providers, and reaching out through greater use of technology. “Our next projects are about raising awareness and we’re hoping to start work on some hardhitting two-minute films to prevent self-harm and suicide. We’re currently looking for support to film, edit and get the project off the ground if anyone wants to help.” And so with Men-Talk, Fem-Talk and TeenTalk, the community brand continues to offer a safe place to talk, encouraging and empowering through group meeting and one-to-one support, either face-to-face or online. If anyone would wish to volunteer or become a sponsor then all help is gratefully appreciated. If there is anything they can help you with then please feel free to get in contact through the facebook Men-Talk or Fem-Talk page. Men-Talk
Adam Bingham is the other member of the team; he runs the Chester Street Gym and has had his own struggles. He speaks to young people about the benefits of exercise and good health, and offers the gym as a place where mental health support is available. Cath Jones, one of the facilitators from Fem-Talk, offers an available female-led support group. When I asked Jason what he was most proud of, he explained “it’s when I’m involved with people who have really struggled. Through the meetings they might start to open up or become quite emotional. Rather than just signposting, it's rewarding to link people up or introduce them to a community group or activitiy and to witness them changing their lives. You see people's confidence return and lives being changed and that gives me the biggest buzz. It’s inspiring and fulfilling to connect people innovatively, healing diverse and highly complex trauma via the simplest of means. I want to help them become unbroken, to see them reshape their life, creating a new one with zest and enthusiasm which empowers them to not only help themselves going forward but to help others too. Reasons to Seek Financial Advice in 2020
N
ow that January is out of the way and the evenings are getting lighter, most people turn their minds to spring cleaning. In our case, prospective new clients are looking at their finances, perhaps thinking of retirement or worrying about inheritance tax. It costs nothing to have a conversation with us to see if you are likely to benefit from our expert advice. Here are a few reasons someone might want to consider seeking our advice; 1. Pension Consolidation You have lots of different pension pots with different amounts all invested in different funds. This can make it hard to keep track of your likely pension income and make it hard to plan for retirement. There may be advantages in consolidating a number of different pension pots. We will review the individual pension plans to see if that could be the case for you First of all, it is important to know what your existing pensions are. Some might have enhanced benefits which, if transferred, would be lost. It is also important to consider any exit charges from your current plans. We can review all your existing pensions and provide a full report along with a specific, tailored recommendation based on your retirement goals. 2. Planning for Retirement You’ve worked hard all your life and built up pension savings. How do these pension savings translate into retirement income? What is the best and most tax efficient way to use your pension? After the pension freedoms reform in 2014, retirees now have lots of different options when it comes to retirement income. We will have detailed discussions with you and devise an income plan which can be monitored and, if necessary, adjusted over time. We work with you to regularly review your pension savings and investments to ensure that you won’t run out of income in retirement. 3. Inheritance Tax Planning The inheritance tax rate is current 40% of the value of a person’s estate over £325,000, or £650,000 for a married couple. This threshold will continue up until at least the end of April 2021. The average inheritance tax bill in the UK is £179,000, according to a recent article in the Financial Times. By planning now, you could save your loved ones most, or all of the tax bill. There are different ways of managing an inheritance tax burden on your loved ones and Milestone can provide advice on the various options available, based on your needs ensuring that more of your estate is left to those intended. The first step is to consider whether you will be caught by inheritance tax. We can obtain details of the total value of your estate, speak to you about how you want to leave your estate to loved ones and make specific recommendations.
Page 10
4. You’ve Received a Sum of Money It’s great to come into some cash, however it can be daunting knowing how best to use a lump sum and whether there are any tax implications. It depends on your own objectives, but usually you would want a lump sum to grow as much as possible and reduce any tax that might be payable. The HMRC is constantly changing tax rules and any benefits would depend on your circumstances and other assets. We can make sure that you make the most of any tax reliefs. We’ll also consider whether you want an income from the lump sum, growth or a bit of both and make tailored recommendations for you. 5. Personal Biases and Behavioural Coaching You might already be a keen investor, managing your own money. You’re keeping costs down – which is great, but each of us has our own personal biases and investors are prone to make knee jerk decisions, which could cost in the long term. You might have heard of the technology stock bubble of early 2000s and have avoided technology shares since – if you have you would have potentially missed out on some years of significant growth that technology shares have seen since the crash. Contrary to popular belief, more often than not, selling shares in a falling market is probably the worst thing you could do. The stock markets ebb and flow like the tides, by selling shares in a falling market you are locking in the loss and not allowing an opportunity for the loss to recover. We can help you mitigate the risk of your investments by creating a well-balanced and diversified portfolio tailored to you, which aims for sensible growth, and peace of mind that you always have an expert hand on the wheel. Business
The Evolution of Chameleon Words & Image: Paul Chapman
C
hameleon is closing down, not due to financial or economic pressures, but “the time being right, to look forward to a happy retirement”, adds Tracy Oldfield, owner. What to many might look like a place to buy wool and all the associated bits and bobs is a lot more than that, it’s a community hub where like-minded knitters and crafters come to meet, socialise and spend time together… and will be missed very much by the those who step through the door. I first met Tracy when she was excitedly opening up the ‘Image and Colour Emporium’, tucked away in the courtyard behind the Real Ale corner on Chatsworth Road. The business offered colour consultations, image and style advice and started selling scarves, accessories, and jewellery to compliment the colour consultations. This was 2011, nine years ago and there was no wool in sight. “We’d been open for a while and ladies started asking about wool, and could we supply some? Ball by ball the range of wool we stocked started to increase”, explains Tracy. She describes herself as ‘falling into the world of colour’. “I’ve always had a passion for colour. I remember going for a consultation with my mother, I watched as things progressed and could see all the comments and suggestions being made, I thought ‘I’d love to do that’. To help people understand what makes them look good and help them choose colours and styles that suit them.” Before opening up the business Tracy worked as a primary school teacher, but personal and family circumstances required a change. “It wasn’t until a chance comment when talking to my hairdresser that I was encouraged to make the change. I commented that I didn’t want to carry on teaching, she asked what I would really like to do, 'colour consultations' I replied.” The seed was sown. Tracy searched out some training, got it booked and started looking for premises. “We started doing knitting groups at Image and Colour, the ‘shady ladies’ we called ourselves, we met on a Friday night, about five of us at the start. “The ladies started wanting more wool, things evolved and I started stocking more wool and extra groups started meeting. We had three groups meeting each week and mini-knits for children on Saturdays. A social scene had been created, bringing people together with a common interest.
Page 12
“I soon realised that the premises were too small, within a few months we’d moved into 420 Chatsworth Road. Wool was now my main business, the groups continued to grow and meet in the rear room, workshops took place with people coming in, and things have ticked over nicely for the last five years at 420. "I've loved meeting the wonderfully talented and creative people who have crossed my path, the ladies who regularly attend the groups, my regular customers and those who drop in for a chat. “We really have become a hub of all things wool. People exchange ideas, patterns, a swap shop, discussion strikes up in the shop as people bump into each other. “It’s great to have brought people together, to encourage and develop people's skills, whilst thoroughly enjoying it plus enjoying their support." She mentioned her suppliers, an opportunity to work with local, national and international businesses, whilst always supporting ethical companies through fair trade, and British yarns from businesses such as West Yorkshire Spinners. My children still have jumpers using yarns from Tracy, lovingly arranged into jumpers by Grandma. “Thanks must go to my family, without whose support it would never have happened. I’ve always been a reluctant knitter but they helped me change this. Thanks to customers, past and present, every sale has been appreciated. It is hard in the present economic climate, but small business can succeed if you do it right, you need to be flexible. Customer service has always been important, to create a place where people want to come. I never dreamt I’d end up with a wool shop, it’s been a fantastic and wonderful chapter in my life”, says Tracy. I was chuffed when Tracy thanked me for my support through S40 Local, for always championing the small independent business and the importance of shopping local. Thanks Tracy, and good luck with your next endeavour. Tracy ended adding, “I will miss the social community we’ve created but some groups will continue, and I look forward to being a participant but it’s time for a new chapter.”

hesterfield Jazz Club, formed in 2012, has moved venues. From 2020 onwards, it will run at the Olde House, Loundsley Green Road, on the third Thursday of every month, doors at 7:30 pm and concerts begin at 8pm.
RELOCATION The ChesterfieldJazz Club Words: Wendy Kirkland
The club was set up by touring jazz musicians Wendy Kirkland and Pat Sprakes, who invite other musicians from the UK, US and beyond to perform with them at the club. Past guests include Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Karen Sharp, Phil Robson, plus a host of other jazz musicians who are the cream of the jazz world. In December 2019, Wendy and Pat played at the Chesterfield Library theatre, as they have done for around 4 years. Andrew Marples, who curates the Saturday concert series at the library, launched a campaign to replace the grand piano there. Andrew has overseen the concerts since 1990 and decided that a change of instrument would be good – but the existing piano still had plenty of life in it, and Andrew was asking a good price. Nobody had taken him up on his offer, so Wendy stepped up and purchased the instrument for their new jazz club launch in April! To further aid the funding of the new piano, which cost £7000, Wendy and Andrew came up with a plan – to hold a two-piano concert in the library, showcasing both pianos. Wendy invited one of the UK’s top jazz pianists, Steve Melling, to join her in concert. Steve has worked with a plethora of jazz giants in the UK and US including Elvin Jones, Ravi Coltrane, Delfeayo Marsalis, Stan Tracey, Mornington Lockett, Martin Drew, Alan Skidmore, Pete King, Claire Martin, Georgie Fame, and has worked at Ronnie Scotts. Steve and Wendy have put together a special duo duet? programme, which includes some of the arrangements they performed last March at the Steinway Two Piano festival at Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho. This concert takes place on 27th March at 8pm.
Jazzwise
Tickets for this event are priced at £15 and are available from Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre or from the library at Saturday Concerts which start at 11:45 every week; or online from www. chesterfieldjazz.com. All profits go to the piano fund. The Observer
Chesterfield Jazz Club concertgoers can also get tickets for the Two Piano Jazz Concert at the next jazz club night which is 20th February, featuring top saxophonist Chris Bowden with Mike Green, indemand bass player from Birmingham. ChesterfieldJazzClub Chesterfieldjaz

Question: How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One leg at a time! An old joke, maybe, but very apt when revising for your GCSE Maths exam. We know that exam revision techniques can be taught, and we do exactly that at Kip at this time of the year with our GCSE Maths students to help them improve their grade. We asked Sue, our super experienced Maths GCSE tutor and an exam marker to boot, what her top tips were for revising Maths topics before the exam. Here is what she advises our students to do… 1. Short regular periods of revision can be more effective than long cramming sessions. For example: 4 x 30 mins rather than 1 x2 hours. 2. Try some of the useful internet revision sites such as: mathsmadeeasy.co.uk, onmaths. com or revisionmaths.com. Print off past papers or use online tests to get instant feedback. There are even some smartphone apps available but avoid these if your phone is a tempting distraction! 3. Memorise the formulae and trig facts you need to know. Create a poster or revision cards and don’t forget to check with your teacher or Kip tutor that you have them all. 4. Regularly use the calculator you will use in the exam. Make sure you know how to use it correctly including negative numbers, fractions, standard form, powers and trig buttons. If needed, make a note of correct keying sequences by your answers so you can review them when revising. Different calculators have their own quirks so don’t get caught out!
5. How can you tackle those long, wordy questions worth 4 marks? Try breaking them down sentence by sentence and ask yourself: Why is this line important? What can I calculate with this information? 6. Be clear with your working out to gain maximum method marks. Underline or highlight key pieces of information to help them stand out and to help you get back on track if you get confused or distracted. 7. Practise pacing yourself through old papers. Most papers have 80 marks to earn in 90 minutes, so roughly one per minute. 8. Take advantage of any revision sessions offered at school. Go prepared with questions you’ve found difficult and get advice and support on specific topics. Sue says she is happy to share her tried and tested revision techniques with all young people facing their Maths GCSE exams in the Spring and wishes you all ‘Good Luck ‘with your revision. If you are feeling that there are things in Maths that you are still finding difficult or don’t quite understand, there is still time… just… to come along to Kip and tackle one or two specific topics with Sue.

Local Hero
Not all heroes wear capes ... Some drive a lorry! Words: Simon Paterson
W
hen larger-than-life truck driver, John Rastrick, left for work on the morning of the 17th January 2019, he had no idea he would return home a national hero! Loundsley Green resident John Rastrick was driving along the M1 last year when he witnessed a vehicle smash into a small car at speed, which left Pari Mistry's hatchback in flames, and her trapped inside the wreckage! With little to no regard for his own safety, John pulled over the lorry and leapt from his cab to begin his rescue of the 27-year-old from Leicester. Approaching the car, John was met with a thick cloud of smoke and flames rapidly engulfing the car. Pari was in complete shock, curled up in a ball with her knees to her chest. John said, “I saw her car spin two or three times when another car collided with her and her vehicle immediately set on fire. “I just knew at that moment that there was no one else around to help and I had to do what was right. “I hoped to God that whoever was in the car had got out, but when I saw Pari in there, I put all my fears aside and tried to pull her out.”
Page 24
With just twenty-nine seconds to spare John, 65, pulled Pari to safety before her car exploded. John goes on to say: “The real hero here is Pari. She spent four days in a critical care unit with a fractured skull, underwent an eight-hour operation and then had to learn to walk and talk again. That’s real determination and courage right there, she’s a very special lady.” Thanks to John, Pari is on the road to recovery and enjoying life with her husband and family. John and Pari have built a friendship and remain close to this day. Pari will always be grateful to the man who saved her life. We are not the only people who have recognised John’s heroism. The Emergency Services crew who attend the incident have presented John with the East Midlands Ambulance Service Bravery Award for his selfless actions. John has appeared on both BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain, gracing the sofas with his presence. He is very happy to have met Naga Munchetty and had quite the grin on his face talking about Kate Garraway! So, the next time you see John Rastrick in one of our local pubs, buy him a pint will ya, he deserves it!

Most Loved Cover The results are in!

efore Christmas, we asked readers to let us know which was their favourite piece of art from the fabulous S40 & S41 Local covers from the last year. We received a good number of entries by text, email and letter, and we're please to let you know that Dave Draws' work came out on top. We've included a copy of the original artwork from which the cover was taken and pass on our thanks to all those who took time to get in touch. This wasn't meant to be a critical review and assessment of each piece of art, it was simply an interest piece to see what people thought.
Page 26
We caught up with Dave to get a few words: "I am delighted to be the favourite cover artist of the year! I was really happy with how the article about my art turned out and I hope that people enjoyed seeing my Chesterfield map on the cover." In addition, Sue Booth from Newbold was chosen, from all those who entered, and will be receiving a copy of her favourite cover, the Christmas cover from edition 99, by Hannah Bluish Illustration. dave_draws Dave draws

Brookfield News
Brookfield News The latest community update from Brookfield Community School Edited by Brookfield Journalism Group
Young Enterprise Update With this year’s Young Enterprise competition approaching crunch time, Brookfield’s Year 12 entrepreneurs prepare for markets, presentations and judging. The two businesses, Urban Jars and Bright Buddies, faced a full day on the Chesterfield market on Thursday 6th of February. In the morning, they had the difficult task of selling their products to the general public - just like an entrepreneur would. However, in the afternoon they confronted an even more demanding challenge, presenting to the judges. Senior businessmen and women from the North Derbyshire region questioned the students, putting them under pressure they had not previously faced, meaning the groups needed to know their facts and figures. Contrary to popular belief, in the eyes of the Young Enterprise scheme, it’s not the company with the most profit that gets judged the best; companies who work well together, are ethical and immerse themselves in the local community are the ones the judges will be impressed by. Both groups have done very well so far with Urban Jars attending multiple markets already and with sponsorship from the Chesterfield Garden Centre; they are starting to build their brand and make a name for themselves in the local community, selling glass jar plant decorations as well as herbs and flowers in bundles with the aim of trying and get more people involved in gardening. Brookfield’s second Year 12 Young Enterprise group, Bright Buddies, focus on the important matter of road safety. They sell road safety packs for children to ensure that the dangerous walk home is fun and safe, the packs containing keyrings, stickers, dog tags and much more, all with an illuminous twist. They are now reaching out to the local community by going into primary schools and conducting a lighthearted assembly on road safety with a more serious message in mind.

Brookfield’s learning support area has been relocated to a more prominent position situated by visitors’ reception. It offers an easier accessibility for student use and newly refurbished classrooms equipped to accommodate students’ needs. These new bigger, more accommodating classrooms serve as an open space for students to receive one-on-one support and assistance from qualified staff. This airier, vivid space generates a lively atmosphere that maintains the communityspirit and caring nature of the pervious learning support in a more accessible, open space. For students this area has been invaluable in providing a space to learn and aid their general studies in lessons as well as break times, where students can often be found diligently working away. Moreover this learning support area has also proved important for 6th formers, such as myself, who still require the attentive support and bespoke care this facility provides. Text: Shannon Palmer

Lesotho Adventure - New Year update Fundraising for the trip to southern Africa is in full swing and Brookfield’s Year 12s have been very creative in the ways they have raised money to fund their visit to develop projects in Lesotho. One event - a staff versus students badminton tournament – was organised by Y12 student Rebecca Riley. Students paid £1 to watch their friends go up against their teachers. The event was a success: “It was really good that so many people came to support the teachers and the cause,” said Rebecca. “And after a great performance from both teams, the students were victorious.” Teachers from various subjects took part and over £70 was raised through the competition. A similar competition is to be held later in the year - this time being a staff versus students dodge ball tournament, which is sure to be entertaining and full of tough competition.
Other money raising schemes include a sponsored silence, a staff and students quiz competition, a bake sale and two students being handcuffed to each other for an entire school day. A school-wide non-uniform day was also held on 24 January, all proceeds going to fund not the students but the projects that the students will undertake while in Lesotho – such as tree-planting and sustainable farming methods. Congratulations to everyone behind the badminton competition and all of those who competed especially the victors. We look forward to all of the other things thought up to raise funds for this exciting trip. Text: George Harris

Fairtrade Fortnight Monday 24 February to Sunday 8 March 2020. Words: Nicola Chapman
F
airtrade is a way to make sure that the people who grow the products we consume are treated fairly for what they do and to fight poverty.
Who doesn’t want to make choices that improve the lives of the farmers, workers and the people in the supply chain, rather than line the pockets of faceless multinational companies?
Fact! Actually, almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty, 60% of them live in extreme poverty.
Fairtrade fortnight runs every year to encourage us to make conscious decisions about what we buy and to select products that provide a better life for the producers.
Fairtrade.org.uk
There are over 6,000 fair-trade products available to buy including; coffee, bananas, cotton, flowers, clothing, tea, wine and of course chocolate! There are lots of fair-trade options available in the supermarkets, but whilst you’re doing good, you could pop down to the Brampton Food Market where, alongside the other stall holders and local purveyors, you’ll find Alison and Graham Wells’ Traidcraft stall selling coffee, tea, chocolate, cereals, dried fruit, nuts, olive oil, a selection of greetings cards, children’s toys, crafts and my favourite, bamboo socks - much softer than they sound! Traidcraft is just one of many organisations working towards fair trade, and supporting the principles of fair prices, safe working practices and environmental sustainability. All fair-trade products display the Fairtrade mark, making it easy for you to recognise that you’re choosing a product produced ethically. eat the Street is coming to Chesterfield soon! It's a community-wide game where players tap cards on sensors called Beat Boxes and earn points as they walk, scoot, cycle and run. The further you travel, the more points you earn. You can even win prizes! There will be over 100 boxes all over the borough, typically placed on lampposts, and all primary school children will be given a card to use for their school team. Parents can join in too and earn more points for schools. Anyone can take part by picking up a contactless card from one of the distribution points; Queens Park Sports Centre, Chesterfield Library, Town Hall and Chesterfiel Visitor Information Centre. The game encourages people of all ages to leave the car at home, groups can form their own teams and there are prizes for the winning teams who travel the furthest. When you get your card, you’ll also get a map of box locations. Find the ones on your walk or cycle to work or school. Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, said, “The feedback from players in other towns who have experienced Beat the Street is that people find it quite addictive, are doing great things for their health and also getting out as a family and finding new places close by".
Join the fun, free game and play with all the family

Garden Tips
March Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
M
id-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes; assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which could affect the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn’t directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year. Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed. Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint, too. It is the time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary too. If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there’s a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long. Seeds to sow indoors in March include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules. Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have. Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year - tying it up prevents this happening efficiently and doesn’t look nice. There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again. The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them – there are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you’ll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas. Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem un-necessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right sort makes a big difference. We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like this say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted. Barbrook Stone Circle 1 Ancient sites and artefacts near Chesterfield Words & Images: Colin Harrison
T
here are three stones circles known about on Barbrook Moor (also known as 'Big Moor') on the other side of the Sheffield Road (the A621), which runs from the large roundabout at the bottom of the hill near Baslow. Number 1 is in the best condition of any in the Peak District (number 2, just a little way away, is virtually invisible, and number 3, a few hundred yards to the north, is less complete). It is close to a good path, easily visible, and about the normal size and shape for a circle on any of the moors near Chesterfield. To get there, either leave Chesterfield on the Chatsworth Road or go up through Old Brampton. If using the Chatsworth Road, at the top of the hill take the road signposted to Cutthorpe and then turn left, where it joins the road that comes up from Old Brampton. After a few hundred yards, where the road you're on bears sharp left, there's a turning on your right (Clodhall Lane), signposted to Curbar - take this. After about 50 yards it goes over another road and is then almost completely straight, with panoramic views of the moors to the west, for about 2 miles, where it reaches the Sheffield Road, where you turn right. In under a mile you'll see a large white gate on your left, which is the access to the track you need to go along. There are parking spaces on either side of the road but nowhere obvious to lock a bike – if cycling, the best plan is to take your bike through the pedestrian gate and then attach it to one of the fence posts on the right, rather than to the large gate itself which might be needed for access. Mountain Rescue use the moors for training some weekends, so it's not safe to assume it won't be used, even on a Sunday. The track is OK for mountain bikes, but it's only a few hundred yards to the stone circle from the gate anyway, which is about 6.5 miles from Storrs Road, depending on your exact start point.
Go along the track for about 600 yards and you'll see, to your right, the larger stones of the circle. At the point where it is closest to the track there's a path leading to it – it's only a few yards. A little further in the same direction is another, more recent structure, a wellconstructed solid circle of stones with many more piled inside it, whose origin and use are uncertain. One of the more obvious paths going to the left leads to another large circle of stones, forming a decent wall, which was an animal enclosure. The whole moor is covered in ancient artefacts such as cairns and barrows, evidence that there was a pre-historic settlement of some sort on the moor. Cairns are piles of stones; some mark burial sites, others may have had ritual significance, while some are probably just piles of stones! It can be hard to tell, and it's not unusual for a pile of stones to be declared a cairn and vice-versa. It's quite easy to lose your bearings when wandering along the many tracks (this is open access land), but you can regain them by locating the noise of traffic from the Sheffield Road, which will be to the east. The circle is shown on OS maps (Landranger 119 or OS Explorer OL 24, map reference is SK 27855 75583, but it isn't named.
