Intro
Hi and welcome back. What a roller coaster of a ride the last few months have been. The initial panic. Stress and adapting. Getting used to the virus and the lockdown. Terry at Londis stepping up quickly with his army of volunteers delivering food to the vulnerable and those self-isolating. Many, many businesses adapting, doing delivery and collection. The COVID-19 support group on Facebook giving people a way to support each other and sharing info. The scarcity of online shopping slots. The rainbows. The NHS clapping. The wonderful key workers, braving the unseen every day and providing care to those where visitors couldn’t be with them. The scarecrows. The neighbours and friends coming together. VE Day. The fabulous weather. The clear skies. No vapour trails. Less pollution. Empty roads. The garden. New places discovered. Bluebells and wild garlic. Exercise. The cyclists, runners and walkers. But people have lost their lives, people have lost loved ones, people have struggled with loneliness, jobs and businesses have been under pressure and the economy is suffering. However the first weeks of lockdown worked out for you, I hope you’ve been able to see some rainbows in all your days and if not we can only hope things start to brighten up for you soon. If you’re lucky enough to be in good health, please continue to offer support to others... • Support local businesses where you can… Amazon don’t need your money - people who live and work in our community do! • Foodbanks are struggling for supplies so please, if you can spare some items, search out your local bank and donate, why not ask the street to do it as a community gesture? • And perhaps most importantly, continue to support those who are isolating, vulnerable and still needing help. We hope the next few months start us on the way to recovery and thank every single person who has made a positive contribution during the last few months. Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield is OPEN
Chesterfield Is OPEN: News Creative Project Words: Paul Chapman Image: Peter Barber
W
hen Peter Barber isn't hand painting murals for Gucci, Farrow & Ball, Omega or helping paint the largest painting in the UK at Pembroke Castle, he's back at home in Chesterfield creating fabulous murals and artwork, H&F, Maison Mes Amis, Brampton Potteries, the rainbow behind the Spotted Frog are all his work and these are just a few of his local projects (check out his Facebook). So when lockdown hit, his creative mind started whirring and he turned his attention to any old piece of wood he could lay his hands on at home to paint a colourful collection of OPEN signs. He popped them on social media offering them to businesses to display as they opened their doors again following lockdown, and the response was overwhelming.
Step up Helen Rowan, from Helen Rowan Photography who offered to help Pete get some photos of the business owners proudly displaying their signs ready for the time when they can open their doors. As I type, 30 businesses have been snapped and they are all shown on the following pages.
I'll be sharing each one on social media and my website as they open their doors. Many are already trading, offering delivery or collection and some essential businesses have never stopped. Page 4
Hopefully by the time you read this, the retail businesses will be open again and pubs and restaurants will be just a few days from opening.
Please support them, support local and support Chesterfield's economy by paying them a visit, but please be respectful of the social distancing measures they have in place. Thanks to Peter and Helen for letting us, at S40 & S41 Local, play our part in this fantastic project.

Adam's Happy Hens
Also happy sheep, goats, donkeys, cows & humans! Words: Paul Chapman Images: Adam's Happy Hens

ordering Brookside is Adam's Happy Hens, you may have seen their animals on the right as you pass Holymoor Road on the way to Baslow. Many of you may have walked through the farmyard in recent months as you’ve taken your ‘daily exercise’, they really are part of the community. Adam's Happy Hens started out in 2014, selling a few eggs, he never expected they’d have to close their doors one day as demand for their services outstripped their ability to cope safely!
The farm itself, ‘The Yews’ is a traditional dairy farm and Adam is the third generation. His grandma was a ‘land girl’ in the war, developed a love of farming and took on the farm. She was well known locally, delivering milk to Holymoorside using a horse and cart. Adam’s Dad continues the family business operating a herd of dairy cows although the herd size has reduced in recent years as retirement beckons. “I can’t see Dad stopping though”, laughs Adam, “he’ll have a herd after he ‘stops’, probably a few beef cows as a hobby.”
Alongside the cows, the hens roam in fields in front of the farmhouse and share space with ducks, geese, sheep, goats and the donkeys Beatrix and Bramble.
Page 12
“It's Dad I have to thank for the business”, Adam says. “I’ve grown up running around the farm. I started with 40 hens in a small barn and was selling eggs each day from a wooden box I’d made with, an honesty box, next to the house at the end of the drive to the farm. “Dad said ‘no one will ever drive down here to pick up eggs’, well that was it, like many sons I vowed to prove him wrong.”
The number of eggs they sold started to increase and Adam needed a bigger box, then a small wooden ‘Wendy’ house and today they run a small, friendly farm shop which has already expanded to twice its original size. And it’s not just eggs, Adam's Happy Hens have expanded their range of local products.
“We pride ourselves in supplying groceries from local producers”, says Adam. “We have some great people producing some fantastic goods, meat from Redferns in Buxton, bread from Henstocks, dairy products from Peak District Dairy, a selection of pies, vegetarian and vegan options from Peak Feast at Youlgreave, flour from Cauldwell's Mill, Derbyshire Oatcakes, sauces from a number of very local makers, including Teresa Lambarelli's pasta sauces, potted meat from Granny Mary’s,

Business Intro local honey from Derbyshire Honey, Peak Dairy Ice Cream, fudge from The Bull Baking, brownies from The Rocking Rocky Road ... I can’t list everything but be assured they have a large range available and as mentioned a good range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free products. In addition to food they also stock firewood by the bag, hay and straw, chicken feed, plants and you can even buy your own hens from them, so you can enjoy eggs from your own garden, plus they have a small range of hand painted greetings cards by local artist, Charlotte Norman Art.
Quickly thinking, the team started an order and collection service helped by others including Harriet’s sister Charlotte, placing their stock list on Facebook, taking orders via FB Messenger or over the phone, they’d sort orders for the next day, call people for payment details and ask them to come up and collect their shopping. This process has been really successful during lockdown and it’s only recently they have opened up their shop to drop in customers, serving people from a hatch, not letting people into the shop and controlling numbers by still offering orders.
It’s been a hectic time for the farm but one that has put Adam's Happy Hens on the shopping list of many people in the community. During lockdown, and still, they offered a limited delivery service to those who were vulnerable or self-isolating. “Throughout the lockdown many local independent businesses have had to adapt rapidly to the new way of working. Some, like us, opening up to collection or delivery services, Mark at The Bull’s Head in Holymoorside established The Bull Baking Co - he produces fudge, bread and pastries some of which we stock in the shop.”
Harriet and the team at one of their recent charity events, the last coffee weekend raising £1667.07 for Ashgate Hospicecare. “The plan has been to diversify, and it's been successful. Harriet (Adam’s partner) has always helped out in the shop but left her old job to work full time in the business in 2019 after we had a problem with a bit of shop lifting which made it clear that the honesty box had to go.”’ says Adam. “When I came along it enabled us to look at what we were doing and step up a gear”, Harriet explained. “We were able to extend the product range and provide a real farm shop service. It’s taken a while, but it was about this time that it started to be something which earned us a living.”
So, the last few months. On Sunday 22 March, when lockdown had just started, they were forced to close the shop to reassess how they were going to operate to meet the massive swing in demand.
“People stopped going to supermarkets and looked for alternatives, where they wouldn’t bump into so many people”, explains Adam. “But, it only took a few days for the same problem to hit us here at the shop, too many customers in a small space, risking both us and customers alike, so we had no option but to close and figure out a way forward that would work for everyone.” Page 14
So, what’s next I ask? “We’ve a couple of mediumterm plans, a single larger hen house which will allow us to grow the flock to 1000 birds, we have about 700 at the moment and then to improve the driveway to the shop.”
“Longer term it would be great to have a new purpose-built shop with more space, perhaps a café and somewhere that we can continue to allow people and children exposure to the animals, I love them and want to enable others to get close up to them, something simple and accessible.” Today Adam's Happy Hens are open midday to 3pm every day at the hatch, where they ask that you respect social distancing measures, hand sanitiser is available, and collections placed are available to collect on Tues, Weds, Fri & Sat.
But what Adam and Harriet, and I suspect all local independents, including S40 Local want you to remember is, as lockdown eases and supermarket delivery slots become easier to obtain… our local independents who came to the rescue when things were tough NEED YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT, it’s the only way they can thrive and be here every day for us! Thanks to Adam and Harriet for taking the time out to talk to me and oh, if you’re a fan of pies… I can wholeheartedly recommend their homities! Adam's Happy Hens Farm Shop

Cover Artist News Andrew Rowan: A Return Pens Andrew Rowan is Helen Rowan's husband, the local photographer whose pictures have graced our cover a few times and is a great friend of the team at S40 Local. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andrew Rowan
H
elen describes Andrew as ‘yet to be discovered talent’ but judging by the cover I think he’s well on the way! So, what makes him tick, how did he arrive at the cover image, why has he not picked up his pens for so long and what’s it like to be part of such a creative family … and what is his day job? I caught up with him to find out.
"In my normal life, I work for Derbyshire County Council supporting Schools and Academies across the county and doodling in the back of my notebook during meetings.
Outside of work, I like the same things I’ve liked since I was a kid – records, comics and making people laugh. At least two of those things always find their way into my drawings. I’ve always spent time drawing cartoons with my two sons (who appear on the cover of the magazine!), but during the COVID-19 lockdown, I found myself drawing more often and more seriously. Drawing helps me relax, gives me a massive sense of achievement and – most importantly – it’s fun.
After years of telling me I should do something with my drawings, my wife Helen (who runs her own creative business at Helen Rowan Photography) finally convinced me to set up a dedicated Instagram page. From there, I started working on the cover of this magazine. My idea for the cover was to include as many Chesterfieldrelated things as possible – some of which would be pretty obvious, and some of which would be obscure. So alongside the Crooked Spire, there’s a reference to a theatre, Chesterfield's most famous drummer, a football legend and a building in another country that has a connection to our town.
My personal favourite thing on the cover (apart from my children!) is my attempt to draw Barbara Hepworth’s Rosewall, which feels like a great asset to the town that we don’t make enough of. I’m currently working on an exciting project related to my obsession with music and still drawing for fun. Follow me on Instagram (@a_r_transmissions) for drawings of hot dogs and Easter Island statues, or send me a message if you want me to draw something for you!" a_r_transmissions

Re-made In Britain Ingmans' Shoes have embraced the online world but can't escape tradition. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andrew Ingman
F
or a while now, Andrew Ingman has been promoting his postal shoe repair service, he’s been organising pop up shops in banks in cities including Canary Wharf (London), Birmingham and in Derbyshire too. He’s also been talking to Northampton Shoemakers to become an authorised repairer for their shoes (ie Barkers, Loakes & Joseph Cheaney) and he’s been promoting the business in the online world. Andy, in his own words ‘is humbled by the fantastic Google reviews that ‘Ingmans’ have received.’ His amazing web design team ‘creativitysells.com’, who are Chesterfield based, have been quite simply a dream to work with, they’re so transparent and so technically gifted, nothing seems too much trouble for them.
quality is not compromised. Ingmans use only the best components and they refurb the uppers with Saphir polishes and creams as standard on every repair.
"This week I received a pair of shoes to repair", says Andrew. "It lifted my spirits and there are three more to come. The first pair will be almost £200 to repair; my first pair of Graziano & Girling shoes from a Saville Row tailor. Call me a shoe geek but these are fantastic shoes to work on and I have to admit I’m pretty chuffed with the repair I’ve done.
"We can't wait to open our doors again to our lovely customers. We hope you’ve been walking a lot, your shoes need fixing and you feel like treating yourself to some new shoes and clothes", laughs Andy.
And all this hard work has now started to pay off.
"It’s the small things, if you take a pair of Loakes, they stitch the soles on with seven stitches per inch, the Graziano & Girling shoes are nine stitches per inch, not everyone has the ability to stitch this close. I sat back and smiled after hitting every hole spot on, perfection! This repair also needed extensive work on the inner lining of the shoes so we needed to make our own three dimensional templates." Andy learned this technique from his former guru, and it really came in handy on this pair of high end, English made shoes. The shoes were fully refurbed like a factory repair but done in a fraction of the time, unlike sending it back to the original maker, however the
So as Andy says, "The service we have built up over the years in Derbyshire can now offer repairs nationally and globally, we've recently repaired a pair of shoes from Australia. The shoes were British manufactured funnily enough and came back home to be repaired!"
"We are trying to embrace the way the world works now, but our service and work ethic are from bygone days and have never wavered. It's quite surreal really that some things don’t advance with time, like the wheel. Goodyear welted shoes have stood the length of time and don’t need improvement only refinement and refurbishment.
There are thousands of small businesses like Ingmans at the moment, waiting to see their customers back and it’s our job to support them. It’s never been more important, but I already feel that a ‘Re-made Britain’ will look very different to today’s landscape and if people all have Andrew’s desire to succeed, I’m sure we have reason to be optimistic for the future. Acupuncture: Is it for you?
We meet Robin Croley from Chesterfield Acupuncture Clinic. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Adobe Stock
R
obin Croley offers acupuncture from his treatment room in Holywell House Annex on Holywell Street where I met up to understand more about the therapy and how it can help. Acupuncture is one of the longest established forms of healthcare in the world. Acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for thousands of years. the focus is on you as an individual and not just your illness, and all symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to affect the flow of your body’s qi, or vital energy. *British Acupuncture Council
“I’ve always been interested in health and Eastern philosophy, tai chi etc. ” explains Robin, “and when, in my 20s, my Mum’s tennis elbow was treated with acupuncture, that really sparked my interest.” “Acupuncture seemed to fit with my interests and beliefs, so I researched courses and found a college in Leamington Spa that offered an authentic course rooted in the Classical Chinese theories, that was almost 25 years ago.”
門
Page 24
CHESTERFIELD ACUPUNCTURE CLINIC
Robin now practises Five Element Acupuncture which, together with the theory of Yin-Yang, forms the basis of Traditional Chinese medicine theory, diagnosis and treatment. The five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water show how our internal organs, systems and structures are categorised and connected. In practice the five elements Robin applies are acupuncture, herbs, dietary therapy, body work (muscles) and exercise (Tai Chi). The elements consider the whole person, not just physical wellbeing but the mental and emotional wellbeing associated with any symptom, illness or sickness. “A person arrives with a set of symptoms; I look at the person as a whole and assess their potential for health. Treating them and then ideally keeping them well so they don’t get sick in the first place” outlines Robin. “Often modern medicine doesn’t look at the complete picture, the body, mind and emotions. We all make choices that become habits. I look at what people do day in day out, things that are not conducive to health, by changing some things, we can see if they make a difference.”
Acupuncture is traditionally associated with pain management, eg: necks, backs, knees etc but can also treat stress related symptons including migraines, headaches, insomnia and digestive problems. Call Robin to see if acupuncture may be able to help. Free half hour consultations available.
T: 01246 273462 M: 07931 657712 Holywell House • Chesterfield Est. over 25 years • Fully qualified • BAcC registered
www.s40local.co.uk
How do you treat people I ask? “There are two main treatments, needles and moxa, dried mugwort, a herb much prized in the East, that is burnt on points on the body.
So who should come and why? “I can help treat almost anything, acupuncture can be used alongside western medicine and other alternative therapies.
“The two used together, effectively bring warmth to promote blood flow, helping build vitality and vigour.
“It’s important to mention that you don’t need to be ill to come. It’s a great way to relax and relieve the stress of modern life, it might just be a case of a more complete you, it might become just one of the coping mechanisms you employ to enjoy a long and healthy life.”
“The needles are extremely fine, 0.16mm thick with copper handles, conductive, they are used at points in the body, up to a dozen in a treatment. By use in the correct meridian lines they access the interior of the body, they can be used to treat a vast number of symptoms; stomach problems, anxiety, over thinking situations, acupuncture is often used to treat the electrical pathways in the body that can become blocked. “Many acupuncturists use acupuncture treatments themselves; it’s used to promote a long and healthy life, the ideal is if you live to 90 for instance, you have 90 years of good health and a short final illness. “People that come to see me tend to be of a certain mindset” explains Robin. “They are open to alternative medicines; they acknowledge that they want to make a change and look after themselves.”
I enjoyed my chat with Robin, nutrition and exercise are important to me and my family, and although I don’t currently use acupuncture, I can definitely see how it would fit alongside our lifestyle. If you are wondering, just give Robin a call to arrange a chat, his google review reads ‘Without doubt, the ultimate professional’ what more could we possibly add!

Odyssey Greek Restaurant A taste of the Mediterranean on your doorstep Words: Simon Paterson Images: Monkey Business Studios
W
henever we walk past the Odyssey Greek Restaurant on the corner of Knifesmithsgate one of us always comments how nice it looks. Peeking through the windows at the traditional Greek setting awaiting soon to be happy customers.
So, earlier this year, I decided Bekah and I should have a ‘proper’ Valentine’s night, at a classy restaurant. I booked a table for two 14 February, picturing the brownie points awaiting me as Bekah took her first bite of halloumi, she always orders halloumi.
After what seemed like a lifetime to wait (five days) it was 14 February. The kids were at the grandparents and we were on our way to the Odyssey Greek Restaurant. We were greeted by a big smile, asked us our names and shown to our table.
Looking around it was like stepping through a teleportation portal and landing in Athens! From the beautifully crafted bouzouki hanging on the wall to the authentic tables, chairs and framed pictures of the culturally rich Mediterranean country, it was clear to see the restaurant wasn’t just somebody’s business, but their life and passion! The restaurant has a warm, communal feel, full of positive energy. A complete contrast and a great break from the miserable weather outside, just what we needed on a rare, child free evening.
Bekah ordered the prawn skewers, I know she enjoyed them as she didn’t speak for the whole ten minutes they were on the table and the plate was spotless when the waiter came to collect it! For dessert Bekah ordered a coffee, she was full from the generously sized starter and main. I, on the other hand, never miss an opportunity for dessert. I opted for the Kormos, a Greek word for ‘tree log’ and named after its shape. Kormos is a mixture of biscuits, butter, cocoa, milk, sugar and a bit of brandy, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. When it arrived, I knew I wouldn’t be eating this alone! Bekah shared it, a perfect end to a fantastic evening at the Odyssey Greek Restaurant and we look forward to going back soon. By the way, we also had a bottle of Greek fizzy wine, don’t tell the kids.
At present the restaurant is only doing takeaway, but you can grab an authentic Greek meal in the comfort of your home by calling on 01246 721573 or downloading the City Grab app to your mobile from the app store and ordering a delicious Odyssey dish (or two) to your front door. www.citygrab.co.uk odysseychesterfield www.odysseyrestaurant.co.uk
We were handed menus and wasted no time in perusing them. Spoilt for choice and true to form we ordered the grilled halloumi with fresh tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. The halloumi had a strong savoury flavour, a creamy texture and salty notes. Perfect. On to the main...
I was torn between the Greek meatballs and the pork souvlaki (pork skewers), so I asked the waiter. He suggested the latter, he was right to do so. The pork skewer arrived on a white and blue traditional plate accompanied by a homemade, Greek rice. The pork was tender and carefully seasoned with a special recipe. I made short work of the main! Brookfield News The latest community update from Brookfield Community School Edited by Brookfield Journalism Group
My Lockdown (Un)productivity As someone affected by the cancellation of school, as well as A Levels, I feel like lockdown is teaching me things about myself that one can only learn when one is self-isolating, lacking face-to-face contact with the outside world - apart from through a small screen (praise be to the realms of modern technology). The time I’ve spent at home has been unproductive, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, although we are encouraged to stick to routine to bring a sense of normality to our lives. I know there are people on the Internet, notably Facebook, sharing what they’ve been up to: tidying the house, getting into yoga, trying different fancy coffees, cooking extravagant four course meals, climbing the tallest mountains in the world, eliminating world hunger, driving to the moon (with members of your own household, of course). All of that is great. The sudden abundance of “free” time
Page 32
which we now have is definitely a great opportunity to do everything you would never have done whilst you had to go to work or school, but I feel it’s important to have time to yourself where you don’t feel like you need to do something outstanding just because you have to stay at home.
It’s important to take a few days to just relax and do something fun; I know lots of people have taken advantage of the surprisingly cheap subscription fee to Disney+, other subscription networks apply. It is said we are living through a mass-crisis, therefore I think we are well-justified to have time off. It’s okay to spend most of the day in bed. It’s okay to leave some work until tomorrow. It’s okay to wear pyjamas instead of “normal” clothes. It’s okay because you’re definitely not alone when doing so; the rest of the world staying at home, me included, is doing the same. Guys and Dolls, 2020 The Brookfield stage was recently illuminated by the annual show - this year being “Guys and Dolls,” and in all honesty, I loved it (a bushel and a peck.)
As always, the performing arts department presented a theatrical delight, following several months of hard work and long nights rehearsing. From comedic moments peppered throughout the show to tear-jerking songs, “Guys and Dolls” was yet another spectacular performance and an asset to the school. With its vibrant mix of New York gangsters, unlikely romances, and salsa dancing which transported the audience into the middle of
f
Havana, the show this year was definitely one of a kind. The students, teachers and people involved in the show, whether it be with the incredible set, music or tech, once again put together a musical comparable to that of a West End production, receiving an abundance of praise, and even selling out for the Saturday night. Environment
Fast Fashion A Prevalent Issue in Today’s World Words: Isabella Kellock (Journalism student) Image: Adobestock
I
t could be argued fashion is a necessity, allowing many people a means of escapism, expression and freedom. Trends have come and gone, influencing people’s styles. Fashion allows people to blur gender boundaries, more so with luxury labels, in contrast to high-street brands who have a stronger focus on ‘men’ and ‘women’ clothing. Fashion has allowed people to show personality and character in a fun, expressive way.
However, fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world. One branch of fashion, ‘Fast Fashion’, where clothing items are purchased with minimal understanding of the impact fashion has on the environment or the workers in the supply chain.
“Buy Less. Choose well. Make it last.” Vivienne Westwood ‘Fast Fashion’ describes mass-production of on-trend, fashionable clothing sold inexpensively. The consequence is a huge impact on the environment and in the garments, the quality and durability is likely be reflected through the low cost. Clothing sold by fast-fashion giants is affordable for their target market, i.e. 14 to 24-year olds, for students who live on a constrained budget, inexpensive clothing and accessories are ideal for their lifestyles. However, fast fashion leads to over-consumption of clothing; sales, Page 34
discounts and low prices entice customers into purchasing more items than they need. Many of those items may only be worn a handful of times and are later disposed of.
One of the biggest changes the world faces is the growth of the human population, resulting in more clothing manufacture. However, access to fashion without using valuable resources needs to be considered. There is a constant cycle of clothing and accessories being produced, bought, sold and potentially never worn. The habit of purchasing new and on-trend clothing has increased substantially, partly due to high street and online fast-fashion brand. These brands constantly provide new collections to mirror the current high-end catwalk trends. With new trends constantly entering the market, what happens to the previous ‘trendy’ clothing purchased?
There are many issues created by the fashion industry; climate change, pollution, the use of hazardous chemicals, diminishing resources, and modern-day slavery are all key, relevant issues within the industry. Climate change is a global concern, the CO2 emissions in the atmosphere have already exceeded and surpassed levels which scientists consider safe. Clothing which is disposed of ends up in landfill sites and non-biodegradable materials can sit there for hundreds of years, emitting methane (a greenhouse gas). Another concern is water use in clothing manufacture - according to UNICEF, ‘785 million people don’t have access to clean water near home’. The production of cotton consumes a surprising amount of water - to make one cotton t-shirt, it can take up to 2700 litres
of water, a standard lemonade bottle is 2 litres. If one cotton t-shirt is worn just a few times then disposed of, that water has been wasted unnecessarily. Polyester is used as an alternative material in some cotton products. However, polyester is a synthetic, man-made fibre containing a common plastic and therefore is not a sustainable material. Sustainable fashion is slowly being introduced into the industry, helping to improve important environmental and global issues which fast fashion has partly created. Sustainable fashion is a positive environmental move improving the fashion industry’s footprint and increasing awareness of the social injustice behind fashion. As Barack Obama said, “We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.” There are many ways where customers can make a positive impact within the fashion industry. Before buying clothing, consider and research the ethical stance and values the brands uphold – that the workers are treated with equality and are not discriminated based on their race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, gender or age and the workers should be working in decent working conditions with suitable pay. Instead of disposing of unwanted clothes, consider donating them to charity shops, selling them if they are in a satisfactory condition or recycle them. But firstly, think before you buy. #30wears campaign – encourages you to only buy an item if you know you’ll wear it at least 30 times.

Kip exam tips for English Language and English literature GCSE that every student should read! Our two key English GCSE tutors have kindly shared their main tips to help GCSE students get higher marks in the exam. If you use these revision and exam answering tips, it can make the difference of a mark or two and that in turn can move you up a grade as well.
Think about how you like to revise. Do you like to listen to music or is it distracting? Posters and things like Mr Bruff videos can help if you are a visual learner. Practice planning answers for the Big Beast 40 mark questions on the Language papers. A couple of minutes spent on a good mind map will pay dividends and will help with content and timing issues.
Margery’s favourite tips:
Julie’s favourite tips:
Make a poster. Detail characters, themes, plots and include relevant quotes to illustrate. Use different colours, sticky notes and arrows to make connections and explanations. Having a strong visual image can help when recalling information in the stressful exam hall.
Techniques for answering the ‘How does the writer use language?’ question:
Cards can also be used to detail the features examiners are looking for when asking specific questions. For example: when asking about the meaning of a specific word from the text, the examiner is looking for explanations of context and connotations. Tone is referring to the writer’s attitude to the subject and can include friendly, serious, comic and arrogant. Create revision cards with grammar terms, their meanings and examples. This helps with analysis of text. Pick two or three examples of complex punctuation and make a special effort to know how to use them. Jot them down as you start the exam and tick off as you use them. Examiners love the correct use of colons and semi-colons!
PETER paragraphs will help achieve a higher mark. Point, Example, Technique, Explanation, Response Timing: Don’t spend too much time on questions with lower marks! For example: English Language Paper 1 Qu 1: 4 marks – 5 minutes; Qu 2: 8 marks – 10 minutes; Qu 3: 8 marks – 10 minutes; Qu 4: 20 marks – 20 minutes. When writing your answers remember to vary the length of paragraphs use a variety of paragraph openers such as consequently, significantly, alternatively and vary sentence length. We wish you all the best of luck and if you think you could do with our help then contact Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 .

Garden Tips
July Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
Page 44
There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. 1. If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept well-watered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway. 2. Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly. 3. Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them. 4. Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use. 5. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds) - harvest these before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway. Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway. (Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap at the Brampton Food Fair in October). 6. Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed. 7. If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell. 8. Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway! 9. There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and make sure they have been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover. 10. Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way. Children like to see instant results, so use these as a way of introducing them to gardening. www.s40local.co.uk

Behind The Business
Johnson Surfacing 28 years of local service Words: Paul Chapman Images: Johnson Surfacing
J
ohnson Surfacing is a 15 strong team who specialise in tarmac surfacing, block paving and resin bound surfacing and have completed many local driveways. They also take on commercial projects; footpaths, car parks, access roads, commercial yards, housing estates, sports and school playground surfaces and have worked in and around Chesterfield for 28 years now, so I thought it was time to catch up with Director Sebastian Johnson, for a chat… over the phone of course. You’ve hopefully spotted their advert in S40 Local and may have seen them working in the local area. “We’re a local authority approved civil engineering and surfacing contractor. Our offices are on Ashgate Road and I live in Walton, so we are thoroughly local”. In fact, Sebastian can often be found walking with his family in Walton. Philip and Heather, Sebastian’s parents, founded the family business in 1992. Philip had spent his life in construction and decided to make the move to be his own boss. Johnson Surfacing has a vested interest in Chesterfield, it’s where they live and work; they’re a part of, and supportive of, the local community. Spending money with Johnson Surfacing, as with any of our local businesses, means your money stays in the Chesterfield economy.
driveway of the business owner or one of the staff where we are working, and it’s this mix of jobs that keeps it interesting” explains Sebastian.
“We’re also local authority approved, which means we can carry out works to drop kerbs, crossings, pavements and we’re fully insured and licenced.
“We’re committed to quality, value and customer service, much of our work is by recommendation and these values are important to us. We are approved members of Derbyshire County Council Trusted Trader scheme and have been since 2009, another sign that both quality and the customer are important to us, plus it’s a great way to attract customers.” “The majority of work is very local but we are do complete residential and commercial jobs spread further afield, Sheffield and Derby mainly."
I asked what Sebastian and the team have been up to during the lockdown? “Like all businesses we’ve been impacted significantly. We had a small number of projects in progress as lockdown started and it was necessary to complete these, where possible, and to leave sites safe.” “This involved a small amount of work at the beginning of lockdown, with PPE and careful planning, it was possible to work safely. It was important to make sure people were happy with the way jobs were left.
“Now we have returned to work we have begun a number of new projects that were lined up as lockdown began. We are getting back to those people who sent enquiries through during our lockdown period and we are contacting those customers who requested work as lockdown began to inform them when their works can now be completed.”
“We have a really great balance of residential and commercial work; some people think we only do large jobs, but we complete around 60 driveways a year, large and small, in addition to a number of larger commercial jobs”, says Sebastian. The commercial work often leads to residential jobs; “we might be asked to provide a price for a Page 48
“During lockdown supplies were difficult to obtain, local plant hire firms and merchants closed which made sourcing supplies extremely hard. Merchants were only supplying suppliers for essential works. “It has been important for us to support the stay home, stay safe message which is why we closed for eight weeks to make sure our staff and our clients were safe. We have now returned to work; our staff have received full training in our new COVID-19 measures and have all been provided with the relevant PPE”.
www.s40local.co.uk
“During the lockdown we’ve updated our website, www.johnsonsurfacing. co.uk which now contains a great gallery of local jobs, and we have received a great response from new and old clients alike.

The Window People Quality products and great customer service Words: Simon Paterson Image: Lee Miller
L
glazed windows, UPVC conservatories, composite doors and more recently orangeries.
Thirty-eight-year-old Linacre entrepreneur, Lee, runs the business alongside his long-term girlfriend, Michelle from Walton.
Lee openly admits he is no salesman and during visits he simply advises potential customers on the best products for their home and leaves them a free, no obligation quote.
ocal couple Lee Miller and Michelle Joyce are the brains and the brawn behind Chesterfield based firm The Window People.
Founded in 2016 by Lee, he bought himself a van, registered as self-employed and set off on a mission to provide fantastic customer service and great products at an affordable price. Mission accomplished Lee!
"Me and Michelle live and work together in harmony haha. Seriously, we do make a great team. Michelle handles all the office stuff brilliantly, which I’m not a fan of and I handle all the installations, ensuring the highest standards are met," says Lee.
“Orangeries are proving a very popular addition to our range, and like all of our products they are backed by a ten-year guarantee. They are an all year usable room with a bit of the wow factor. Our products are manufactured locally, keeping money in the local area and are ‘A’ rated energy efficient”.
If you would like a chat with Lee, then give The Window People a call on 01246 900981.
Lee saw success early on in his business adventure and expanded the company quickly. Having met Lee in person I have no doubt his outgoing and friendly personality played a huge part in his early success with him out in the field everyday chatting to customers and leading on installations.
"Running a business in Chesterfield is great as it’s a town on the up. In many ways it feels like living in the big city, but with a community feel about it. The people are always so friendly, and we get a lot of our work through recommendations from friends, family and previous customers”.
The Window People’s expansion has created jobs in the local area, now employing two fitters and two apprentices. Lee has over 20 years of experience in the industry and is happy to be able to pass on his expertise to the team. "Being able to employ local people and offer apprenticeships to the next generation is important to me and something I never dreamed of when I bought my van back in 2016. I have a great team behind me and hope to create even more jobs and opportunities in the future, passing on my knowledge and skills along the way," Lee goes on to say, "over the years The Window People have expanded their product range installing double Page 52

History
Florence. A machine. Words & Images: Ian Kinniburgh
W
ritten prior to lockdown by Ian Kinniburgh, this article feels more relevant three months later as we give appreciation for her life and to the NHS and nurses for their work and sacrifices always but particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic. Florence Nightingale lived from 1820 to 1910 and had local connections to nearby Lea Hurst at Holloway effectively the family's summer retreat.
• • • •
May was the 200th anniversary of her birth and to commemorate Ian has collated a few of the lesser known facts about Florence Nightingale's life.
•
•
She nearly died in Crimea and was ill and bedbound for much of her life.
•
Shunned publicity - travelled back from Crimea incognito as Miss Smith.
•
Her proven influence was worldwide, UK, USA, Canada, India, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Finland, Egypt, Turkey, Austria & Australia.
•
•
• • • • • • • • • •
Born to a very wealthy family, but fame and wealth meant nothing to her.
•
At the age of 17 she nursed her family through a national flu epidemic.
•
After the Crimean War she wrote a 900 page report for the War Office.
•
Powerful organiser, a strict disciplinarian, but with a real sense of humour. Helped soldiers in Crimea to save and send money back to relatives in UK. A genius with facts and figures, and a member of USA Statistical Association.
Trained nurses who made an immediate impact throughout the World.
A “Nightingale” nurse successfully tended the second son of Queen Victoria when he was shot in Australia in 1868. Fluent in French, German, and Italian, she frequently visited these countries. She also met Garibaldi who helped unify Italy.
Page 54
• • •
Brilliant writer and wrote novels eg Cassandra, and a very good mimic.
Involved with the formation of the Red Cross and Geneva Convention. Designed and advised on hospital construction throughout the World.
A huge impact in the liberalising of British colonial policy in India.
God “called her to his service” in 1837 but to what service is unclear.
Declined several marriage proposals and her parents opposed her nursing ambitions, but of course later relented. USA asked her advice on treatment of casualties in the American Civil War.
Single handedly created nurses as the professionals we know them today.
The first UK Air Ambulance (1933) was in Surrey and named “Florence Nightingale”.
To obtain his inheritance her father changed his name from Shore to Nightingale at age 18. William Smith, Florence’s grandfather fought for the abolition of slavery in the early 1800s. He worked with Charles Babbage the founder of early computers and is this from where Florence learnt her mathematics? Her mother, one of 12 children, lived until age 92 and was nursed at her death by Florence. Perhaps her reforms laid the foundations for the creation of the NHS in 1948. She battled for hospital cleanliness to stop infections - a fight that it is still being waged today, 200 years later!

Lime Living: Life as a business in the 'new normal'. Words: Jamie Wajs In line with Government guidance for the Estate Agency Industry, we recommenced our return to work on Monday 18 May, implementing the guidance.
Although we are resuming our usual services, the office door remains closed until further notice, with office visits by pre-confirmed appointments only.
All property viewings and market appraisals for selling or letting are now subject to adhering to the social distancing measures and the guidance we have to follow; face coverings where social distancing cannot be maintained, gloves and hand sanitiser. We are going through these measures with applicants for each appointment and so far these measures are being adhered to. Many of our properties now have video walk-thru and these have proved to be very popular with potential viewers, and are the new first phase of viewing a property before a physical viewing takes place. We have had positive feedback to the walk-
thru’s, this also cuts down on unnecessary travel and property visits and helps keep our staff safe.
So far it has been an encouraging return to work in terms of business levels and property interest remains buoyant. We have taken both sales offers and rental applications from prospective home buyers and movers, overall we remain confident that the local property market is showing signs of bouncing back. We are seeing strong demand for family style properties especially to rent in particular those with three bedrooms and this is the same pattern for the sales market, where family movers are showing strong buying interest.
If you are looking to sell or rent a property, please do make contact via our website at limeliving.co.uk or call 01246 275559, we would be delighted to help get you moving.

Life In Lockdown Writers, photographers, contributors wanted! Words: Charlotte Higgins CF DVA Image: Wynn Ryder Derbyshire Voluntary Action is to publish a book titled ‘Life in Lockdown’ documenting the Covid-19 Pandemic as seen through the eyes of residents in Chesterfield and surrounding areas…but we really need your help in doing this. • Do you have interesting photos of bad haircuts, VE Day celebrations, rainbows in windows, volunteer’s delivering food parcels, deserted streets and queues outside supermarkets? • Have you kept a diary during this time or have you expressed yourself in a short story or poem? • Have you been drawing, painting or crafting? • Maybe you now feel inspired to create something?
Photographic/electronic submissions will be welcomed from amateur and professional artists, poets, photographers, creative writers, crafters, whether you are young, elderly, volunteers, survivors of Covid-19 or bereaved… everyone has their own unique story that deserves to be told and preserved for future generations. This book aims to unite us through a common goal, celebrating
how we rose to an unprecedented challenge and showed that community spirit is alive and kicking.
Allow your creativity to record your experience and consider the ways you’ve dealt with the changes, the ups and the downs, the feelings of isolation and loneliness and let’s not forget the heartwarming stories, the acts of kindness towards strangers and elements of lockdown we may not want to lose!

Environment
One Man's War On Plastic Words & Image: Greg Hewitt
H
i I’m Greg, I’ve lived in Chesterfield for nearly a year and a half, and I’m passionate about taking environmental action.
Before moving to Chesterfield, I had previously been involved in a campaign to stop fracking for gas in the UK, where I learnt about national companies wanting to frack in Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire and use the gas as a feedstock to produce plastics. Around the same time Blue Planet 2 aired, David Attenborough passionately encouraged thousands of people to think about our impact on the planet due to the huge swathes of plastics entering our oceans, causing pollution and deaths of marine life. April 2020 and a new documentary is released called ‘The Story of Plastic’, bringing attention to plastic production. Since Blue Planet 2 a big focus has been on cleaning up plastic pollution - beach, river cleans and money invested in technology to collect plastic from the ocean, without attention being drawn to what is really driving our plastic pollution crisis - the oil companies spending billions of dollars on plastic production. The UK government’s move to put a moratorium on fracking in the UK has helped switch attention.
Having watched The Story of Plastic, I discover that $204bn has been invested in 334+ new petrochemical facilities to help produce more plastic. Communities in Indonesia and India were cleaning up their coast from the swathes of plastic pollution, yet every day more and more pollution was continuing to pour in. Clean-up of plastic pollution is still important, and the work that Don Catchment Rivers Trust does around Chesterfield’s rivers and streams is incredible, however, the focus needs to shift to doing something about the $5.2 trillion of subsidies for the fossil fuel industry producing more and more plastics. Now we are faced with a global pandemic and more people are starting to think ‘what happens as lockdown ends?’ A national poll revealed that only 9% of Britons wanted life to return to ‘normal’. There seems to be a growing appetite for a ‘new normal’, and the theme appears to be for an environmental improvment. Lockdown provides us with the opportunity to reflect on and pursue positive environmental changes. ‘The Story of Plastic’ suggests we ‘turn off the tap’ to stop
plastic pollution at the source. Perhaps a potential opportunity is through the upcoming piece of legislation, The Environment Bill. So I urge people to investigate plastic production, the Environment Bill, and write to your MPs (www.writetothem.com). As well as calling for international and national action, I also feel it is very important to take action locally. So in June 2019 I set up Plastic Free Chesterfield to work across the whole community, with businesses, schools, and community groups to take action on single-use plastic. Almost a year on, over 40 businesses, 20 community organisations, and nearly 10 schools have signed up to the campaign where: • Businesses make at least three “swaps” away from single-use plastics • Community organisations pledge to reduce single-use plastic in their group/organisation • Schools sign up to the Plastic Free Schools programme
A recent survey from Surfers Against Sewage revealed that COVID-19 has made people realise they want to do more to reduce plastic use. I love this quote from Anne Bonneau: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” So if you’ve already started or are about to embark on your plastic-free journey, Plastic Free Chesterfield would love to hear from you. Join our Facebook group ‘Plastic Free Chesterfield’, introduce yourself and share your story. Stories can be incredibly empowering, inspiring and motivate others to act. I look forward to seeing you there. www.plasticfreechesterfield.org.uk www.facebook.com/plasticfreechesterfield www.twitter.com/plasticfreechez www.instagram.com/plasticfreechesterfielduk

ormer teacher and local mum of two Anna Higham is the ‘mumtrepreneur’ behind As Fresh As A Daisy pram cleaning, restoration and refurbishment. Anna started her venture around six months ago after leaving the education sector and was ready for a new challenge. Scrolling through social media (as most of us do) she saw a pram for sale at just £10. "I was browsing one day on an online marketplace, saw a pram for sale and thought 'I can do something with that’. Looking at the pictures I was sure they didn’t tell the full story, but for £10 it was worth a punt. I went ahead and bought the pram. I was right, it needed quite a bit of work, but I was willing to put the time and effort in, learning some new skills along the way. Upon inspection I could see the handlebars needed re-covering with leather, all the plastic needed buffing up and restoring, and the fabric required some stitching and a bit of TLC. I set to work right away and sometime later (quite a lot of time) it looked like new! I was really happy with the work I had done and was able to sell it on for a profit. It was at this point I thought ‘this could be a really good sustainable, environmentally friendly business’ and ‘As Fresh As A Daisy' was born". Anna moved to Chesterfield 13 years ago with her husband, Jon. She taught in nursery and reception years and loved her time with the children.
new. There’s a big push to reduce, reuse or recycle and my business is doing its bit to help." Anna buys all her supplies from local, independent businesses and is a big high street fan.
"I love the fact you can just pop into town and pop out again! I’ve lived in cities before where it’s difficult to do that and venturing in the centre is a big job! My favourite shop is Fred’s Haberdashery, they have a wonderful selection of products and I pretty much get all my supplies there. It’s important to support local businesses and keep money in our local economy. Starting my business has led me to be more mindful of where I spend my money". Anna works from home and it’s clear she enjoys what she does. Her services start from just £2.50 and she sells restored, good as new prams from as little as £50.
"For many families buying a new pram simply isn’t affordable. I love being able to offer less well-off families top branded prams such as Silver Cross and Mamas & Papas for as little as £50! If you are thinking of throwing your old pram away, don’t! I can bring it back to life and make a local family who can’t, or don’t, want to spend hundreds of pounds on a pram very happy." At S40 and S41 we love Anna’s environmentally friendly company, and we are sure she will be ‘pushed off her feet’ in no time.
"I really enjoyed my time as an early years teacher. At this age they are still amazed and excited by the simple things in life but I knew I was ready for a fresh challenge and wanted to build something of my own. I do miss the pupils though, well, most of them anyway". As a mother of two herself she was all too familiar with how worn out, damaged and tatty pushchairs, strollers and child car seats can get overtime.
"Pushchairs, prams and child car seats are so expensive these days, some cost well in excess of a thousand pounds! It makes sense to look after them, service them every now and again, and repair them if they break. We have a tendency in society to throw things away once broken and buy Please Mention S40 Local
