Hi and welcome to our Summer edition. Thanks to everyone who got in touch to say how glad they were to see us back in print. It was lovely to hear how many of you had missed your S40 Local fix. We also had quite a few advertisers say they'd had a great response, it’s fantastic to know that people are supporting the independent businesses who place their trust in S40 Local.

On a sadder note, it’s disappointing to see shops closing in the town centre, and talking to some of the businesses who supported us through the pandemic when we avoided the supermarkets, many have already seen business drop off as people return to the supermarkets.

Our independent shops are a bit like muscles, use them or lose them! Please try to support them when you can. Like so many things, work experience was cancelled, but we decided to carry on and did it remotely. Thanks to Aisling Rippin from Brookfield, for writing articles for this edition - I've been really impressed.

George Stephenson (1781 to 1848) Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative pays tribute to one of the country's most influential industrial innovators... who happened to reside in Chesterfield. Words: Paul Chapman Illustration: Phil McDonald, Defeye Creative

O

ur cover this edition features an illustration of George Stephenson, created by Phil McDonald from Defeye Creative, in honour of one of the area's most famous residents.

Stephenson also built the first public inter-city railway line to use locomotives in the world, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.

An early success, Stephenson designed the miner's safety lamp, a lamp that would burn in a gaseous atmosphere without causing an explosion.

Perhaps not so well known is Stephenson's cucumber straightener. A keen fruit grower, he ordered blown glass cylinders to be made for his garden at Tapton House, where he spent the last ten years of his life. The elongated glass funnel was placed over the cucumber at an early stage to encourage the fruit to grow straight - not sure he'd have been a fan of Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall's campaign to encourage us to embrace our wonky veg!

Stephenson, born on 9 June 1781 was a British civil and mechanical engineer, known as the "Father of Railways", he's a great example of the Victorian desire for improvement in the industrial world.

A rail pioneer, Stephenson's railway work is one of the most important developments and inventions of the 19th century and key to the Industrial Revolution. He (and his son Robert) built the Locomotion No. 1, the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.

Stephenson's chosen rail gauge, sometimes called 'Stephenson gauge', was the basis for the 4 feet 8 1â „2 inches (1,435 mm) standard gauge used by most of the world's railways. Stephenson's Rocket was an early steam locomotive built for, and winning, the Rainhill Trials held by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in October 1829. Page 6

George Stephenson moved widely around the country pursuing his career in rail, living at Alton Grange (now part of Ravenstone) in Leicestershire until 1838, before moving to Tapton House in Derbyshire.

Stephenson is buried here in Chesterfield, in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church, on Newbold Road. A plain memorial slab is positioned in the floor of the sanctuary and the stained glass window at the east end of the church was erected by his son Robert Stephenson. The lowest interest rates ever seen for equity release! Chesterfield based, Simon Chalk from Laterliving now! expands to cope with increased demand. Words & Image: Laterliving now!

E

quity release Lifetime Mortgages are increasingly popular, helped by interest rates falling to record lows, tempting homeowners that have seen pensions and savings ravaged. The lowest interest rates now start from under 2.50% and with options to pay monthly, or to simply pay nothing and roll-up until the home is later sold, it’s understandable that more homeowners are considering Equity Release to support them in retirement. Simon Chalk of Laterliving now!, Chesterfield’s only specialist Equity Release firm, believes that there has been no better time to consider this option for providing capital or boosting income for the over 55s. During the current crisis, Simon has noticed a sharp rise in people looking to pay for care privately at home, with Equity Release providing a means of meeting the cost.

"Anyone looking to unlock tax-free cash tied up in their home to help themselves or their loved ones, can now benefit from access to substantial sums of money at the lowest interest rates.” Simon’s company has taken on two new advisers – Chris South and Amanda Hunt, to cope with the increase in demand for its award-winning service. Many people are looking to help and support their families as they struggle with the crippling financial consequences of the pandemic. “Equity release can be a sensible solution to a problem, but it isn’t always the right one, so sound financial advice from an independent specialist is essential. Clients often turn to us, having been swamped with sales brochures and emails from large national firms advertising on TV and internet. People want clear advice, not being sold something that might be completely wrong for them”. Under the current social-distancing rules, Laterliving now! offer safe home visits, and free consultations by phone, Facetime, WhatsApp or Zoom. They can help people decide if Equity Release is right for them, without needing to actually meet.

"Being based in Chesterfield makes us easily accessible" said Simon. "We have specialised in later-life planning for many years and being truly independent, means that we’re not tied to a limited number of lenders. We only recommend Equity Release from providers that, like ourselves, are members of the Equity Release Council. I served on its Standards Board, helping to form the rules that keep homeowners safe, and I’m now performing a similar roll on the Advisory Board to The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)." For any information regarding equity release, please feel free to call Laterliving now! or visit the website: laterlivingnow.com.

Business News

Brampton Manor Bouncing Back News ... again! Words & Image: Paul Chapman

L

ike every business Brampton Manor has had some uncertainty to deal with of late, and not just due to the Coronavirus!

The gym (or squash club as some still refer to it) closed its doors in November last year after over 40 years, and for a while the future of the 16th Century Manor House was uncertain.

However, adversity has brought opportunity for Managing Director, Craig Lynch, and the time during lockdown has been spent refurbishing and reopening the venue as a stand-alone meeting, socialising and relaxation venue open to local people and visitors heading to the Peak District National Park. “Brampton Manor has seen a great deal over it's 400 years and is now back to where it was in the 1960s as a valuable Community Heritage Asset available to the public. It has been great to re-open and return the staff from furlough to their jobs, both on the bar & restaurant side and in our salon. Due to the wellreceived, successful re-opening we are creating even more positions as we gradually and safely re-open”. “We have used the outdoor space to create a spacious environment for reopening in a ‘Beach Club’ style for the Summer. There is still a family feel and the spaciously positioned tables, private rooms and booths mean the venue is ideally suited to safe distancing within a social environment.” As well as measures you would expect such as sanitising stations, protective screens in the CND Shellac Nail Bar and disposable food condiments, there have been some unique innovations such as individual table ‘caddies’ with a full complement of sanitising equipment and even individual packs of complimentary Haribo! Page 12

The venue is back open seven days a week and the forthcoming ‘Sundown Sessions’ will see Brampton Manor supporting local musical artists and DJs getting back to plying their trade on the purpose-built outdoor stage. All safely and within the noise and non-dancing guidelines of course! Craig also shared with me some of the exciting possibilities for future developments at the venue;

“This is the third ‘evolution’ of the venue during my 15-year tenure after the redevelopment of the whole venue in 2005/6 and the sale of the Sports Club and redevelopment and re-opening of the Manor House in 2014. The next few years will see more changes. We have made pre-application submissions to the Council for our plans to reinstate the original rooms at the first floor of the Manor House to turn the premises into a boutique hotel, with bar, restaurant and salon, including a Japanese style ‘Garden Spa’ that will be open to the public. We hope that our trackrecord of working with the Borough Council’s Conservation Officers over the years to sensitively restore the original features of the Manor House, and the employment opportunities we can create and retain with this project will be well received in the current environment.” With all these new developments, Craig is keeping it in the family. The venue is now managed by his youngest daughter, Alex. Alex previously ran the salon and has now taken the reigns of the whole venue. Brampton Manor is once again back on the map! bramptonmanorsocial

Out & About News Cycling: Local An Opinion I was recently asked by Dom Stevens from Destination Chesterfield 'what I love about riding a bike around Chesterfield?' Words & Image: Paul Chapman

"Where do I start and how many words do you want, was my initial reaction! Why? Simple, I just love to cycle, always have and always will.

"Cycling when I was young was how you got to your friends after school. There were a few years where I abandoned the bike as motorbikes and cars took over, but it wasn't long before my commute across Nottingham to Boots Head Office each day involved cycling. "7am slicing through winter traffic and dropping onto quiet cycle paths and towpaths through the suburbs is fab, there isn't anything like it, a real wake up before work. The introduction of the mountain bike had me driving up to the Peak District every weekend, and this was prior to suspension on a pushbike, painful stuff but still addictive!

"Years later, I now live on the edge of the Peak District, 25 minutes of pedalling from my front door and I can be at the top of Beeley Moor. The hills and valleys looking like all my favourite toys spread out on the lounge floor!

"I've competed a few times but only for a bit of fun, I've never been that quick, but now sees me in a much more serious competition - competing with my 14 year old son to get the odd 'King of The Mountain' (see Strava). But mostly I just try to hang onto his back wheel downhill as I watch a vision of my past youth, blind to the dangers involved, and clearly, loving it as much as I do." "Chesterfield is a great place to ride, we have some very useful bits of infrastructure and a network of bridleways that take you away from tarmac. I've drawn up an 11 mile route around the west side of town, Strava says it's 14% road, 55% Page 16

dirt and 31% unclassified. It should take around an hour and if you take my suggested directions you can avoid many of the road sections." What would you ask for the Chesterfield cyclist in the future?

"It would be a cycle superhighway out to the Peak District. This would create an additional benefit of providing a safe route for people on the west side of town to get into the town centre, out of the way of the lorries and vehicles that travel along Chatsworth Road."

You can plan your bike rides in and around Chesterfield by either downloading the Chesterfield Cycle Map, produced by Chesterfield Cycle Campaign or going online to the Cycle Streets website. Take a browse and see if you could use a bike for your commute or escape to the quiet lanes. Once you have explored the bike rides and cycle routes in Chesterfield, why not discover the rest of the The Peak District and Derbyshire, easily accessible from town. From family-friendly cycle rides on a traffic-free trails, or some more challenging mountain biking on rugged terrain, there is something to suit all abilities.

Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire have produced a range of Cycle guides for the wider area including routes and videos to plan you next cycling adventure. Chesterfield Cycle Campaign has further information and routes to explore the area. chesterfieldcc.org.uk/maps-leaflets/

Out & About

West Side Bimble. The cycle route is about 11 miles around the west side of town, Strava says it's 14% road, 55% dirt and 31% unclassified. It should take just over an hour to get round at a good pace, or simply slow down and enjoy the ride. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

• Start at the entrance to Walton Dam (1) and ride through to Somersall Park (Hipper Valley Route) and to the car park on Somersall Lane. This track is good in summer but after rain or in the winter can be muddy.

• Pass The Peacock at Cutthorpe, or perhaps call in for refreshment! As you pass the Peacock you round a left hand bend, shortly after this you need to turn right into Greenlane (8).

• As you leave Somersall Park turn right up Somersall Lane, this is one of the few road sections but unfortunately is the only option.

• Drop all the way to Holmebrook Valley Park. Take care through Hall Farm as it can be muddy, or if you time it badly, the cows may have crossed!

• At the end turn left and proceed East up Chatsworth Road, again on the road.

• As you enter the woodland at the bottom of this track stay right and follow the bridleway until you see the fishing pond at Holmebrook Valley Park.

• At the junction with Brookside Bar (2) the pavement becomes much wider and it's usually possible to ride safely using this until you reach the junction with Holymoor Road. Please keep a look out for any cars leaving or entering driveways and pass any pedestrians courteously. • Reaching Holymoor Road cross to the pavement on the opposite side of the road and continue up to Westwick Lane. There is a wide tarmac access road section that keeps you off Baslow Road until you reach the garage. • Turn right back on yourself onto Westwick Lane, away from the busy roads and you can continue along here until you reach Ashgate Road (4), take a left for 100 metres and then cross to join the well surfaced bridleway, Woodnuck Lane, that will take you into Linacre reservoirs. • Take care on the descent, it can be a bit slippy when wet but is safe enough if you take your time. • Dropping into Linacre you will approach an old bridge with a wide uphill path on the left, (5) take this and climb to reach the lower reservoir where you need to take the middle path through the gap in the fence to join the concessionary path around the lower, and onto the middle reservoirs. • As you see the top reservoir turn right across the front (6), please do not ride around the top reservoir as it is a wildlife area and cycling is not permitted on this path.

• Take a right turn over a bridge (9) then immediately left to follow the trail, take care as you cross the car park entrance and pass under Loundsley Green Road. • Go round the edge of the playing field to reach Pennine Way, where care must be taken to cross the road and pick up the marked cycle route signposted into the town centre. • Cross Purbeck Avenue and be sure not to miss the left turn to pop out on Ashgate Valley Road (10). • Turn right onto Holmebank East, cross Ashgate Road and proceed down Chester Street for a few hundred metres. Shortly after the park you need to look out for a left hand turn that will take you on a cycle trail towards town, passing behind the old gas cylinders (only one remaining). • Take the right at the end of the path and around the edge of the car park for the bingo hall. • You will arrive through an arch onto Chatsworth Road at Wheatbridge (11). • Follow the cycle route across the path around the island and then over the traffic lights at Wickes. Stay slightly left and take the short path to reach Dock Walk and turn right following Dock Walk. • Continue onto Goyt Side Road (12) and carry straight on along the cycle track through the old Walton Works site.

• As you reach the far side of the reservoir turn right downhill and follow this path until you reach a gate (7).

• At the end turn left along Walton Fields Road (13) then immediately right to join Bobbin Mill Lane.

• Go through and turn left, follow this steep tarmac climb to its end with the B5060 Main Road, Cutthorpe and turn right. Again, although there are suitable paths and tracks from the reservoir there are no bridleways so the cyclist is forced to take a short road section.

• Stay on Bobbin Mill Lane by turning left to meet Walton Road and back to your starting point at the dam.

Health

Time for Change? We catch up with Ian Waller, Chesterfield Borough Council (CBC) Assistant Director for Health & Wellbeing. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Adobe stoock

D

uring the first few weeks of lockdown the only outdoor activity people were allowed was an hour walking, running or cycling as residents could be seen looking after their health.

The government pledged to improve walking and cycling infrastructure to support this and allocated money to suitable local initiatives. CBC made changes, which are initially short term, and although useful to some creating safe routes away from traffic for pedestrians and cyclists, they were not very far reaching. We have seen some really ambitious changes in neighbouring cities, why

Page 20

can’t we do this in Chesterfield and enable real change in the way people move around with less dependency on our cars? I chatted to Ian, over the phone, to see how our council is reacting to this question.

“The ‘Beat the Streets’ project was a great indicator that people are looking for change” explains Ian. “People were encouraged to walk, run, cycle or scoot between Beatboxes. The Sport England part funded project, which was also supported by Derbyshire County Council and Chesterfield Borough Council, engaged primary

www.s40local.co.uk

schools specifically, as well as other schools and organisations. All local primary schools approached came on board. People registered and then tapped as many of the 120 Beatboxes as they could, installed around the borough. “Feedback from parents and carers is that kids now want to walk”, Ian says. “The uplift in physical activity has a positive impact across all ages, it wasn’t just children who took part in the scheme.

“Unfortunately, the programme was halted due to lockdown, but 13,820 people registered and covered 143,000 miles between them, to obtain their points. The technology in Beat the Street was a great hook to get people involved.”

During lockdown many people started cycling, many returning as they dug out an old bike from the back of the shed or visiting local cycle shops to buy new. Stock was stripped at all price points from £150 to £7500, you still can’t easily find a good stock of bikes. “British Cycling research has highlighted that a reason for people not cycling is concern regarding riding on busy roads. As roads quietened down during lockdown people picked up their bikes and went out, indicating a desire to change when concerns are removed”’ explains Ian.

Chesterfield has a growing number of segregated safe walking and cycling paths, but I asked if some of the recent changes, for instance on Crow Lane, the route to the hospital, and around the town centre, would become permanent or whether others could be adopted? “For ongoing change, we need to create the infrastructure for people to change, so people will use it”, answers Ian. “All change should be an integrated part of our overall plan, and we’re working on a strategic assessment of integrated transport within the Borough to support our communities make the transition to sustainable modes of transport. For instance, lockdown created a massive upswing in walking and cycling so we will look at how we can support this to ensure sustainable transport becomes part of everyone’s way of moving around” Ian explains.

Council, as the transport authority, will undertake include all elements of town travel; public transport, engaging with taxi operators, HS2 impacts, the railway station and looking at how people get to and from the station in as green a way as possible.

Another of Ian’s roles covers the Climate Emergency. “In 2019 we declared a climate emergency” says Ian. “I was the lead officer for the development of our climate change action plan which covers a range of key themes impacting on climate change. We produced the plan through cooperation and collaboration with a working group of residents and councillors. This plan, approved in February, has a vision for Chesterfield to become a net zero Borough by 2050, the lockdown has had an impact on some of our activities, but as lockdown conditions change we will be well placed to carry on our work on the plan.” For many of us who are able, working from home over the past few months has shown that maybe we don’t need to travel into the office as regularly. Technology has enabled people to work effectively and it’s unlikely that people will drift back to the office in the same way as before lockdown. Services have continued to be provide and it’s been a bit of an eye opener for the future. “The working from home agenda is now at the top of many people’s way of working and it’s important that we embrace and work with it. “An integrated transport system would need to support this, a real change away from the traditional 9 to 5 to reduce peak hour congestion. Not everyone can work at home but where people can they’ll hopefully continue with this, where appropriate”, Ian says.

Ian gave me the impression that there is a desire to make change, but that change needs to be part of the bigger picture and an integrated plan. Once this is sorted, they will know where to start and can start putting building blocks in place.

“Sustainable transport means different things for different people’, says Ian. “Not everyone, wants to or can easily walk or cycle, so our challenge across the borough is to deliver an infrastructure that is easy for people to adapt and use."

Business Intro

The greatest wealth is health From CBD to infrared saunas, 360 Wellbeing has it all Words: Simon Paterson Images: 360 Wellbeing Centre

H

ealth & Wellbeing is at the forefront of everyone’s mind right now. I was eager to meet some of the team at the 360 Wellbeing Centre on Chatsworth Road to hear what services they offer and how they help the communities of Chesterfield, by offering a range of traditional and progressive treatments, products and therapies. I caught up with Samantha, Kelly and Andrew at 360 Wellbeing.

How did 360 Wellbeing get started? It’s quite the venture…

Kelly: I met Samantha and Andrew in 2019 when they were referred to me by a friend. They were seeking a professional nutritionist, one who would understand their supplement range and add value and expertise to the business. After meeting with them and going through their product range and plans, I was completely on board!

Samantha: I personally fell into this world from being in a corporate environment and having very much a structured mapped out life. Sadly, I lost my father and little dog very quickly and wanted some help with the grieving process. This brought me into the wellbeing world, I needed to understand and improve my own wellbeing, both mental and physical. Finding the help I needed wasn’t easy, so I wanted to support the residents of Chesterfield by making it accessible at a local level. Looking at the wide range of qualifications and experience the 360 team has, it’s clear they have all the bases covered from Registered Nurses and Counsellors to Clinical Directors, Colon Hydrotherapists and Psychotherapists. Page 24

Kelly, you are the Head Nutritionist here at 360, what does your role consist of and what is your approach to Health & Wellbeing?

Kelly: My speciality is working with the gut. I am very passionate about advising people on how to nourish the body. It’s not just about weight management or counting calories. I advise on how to nourish the body to repair it, ensuring we get the best performance out of it. Whether you are a topclass athlete looking for marginal gains or just want more energy during the day, I can help you. From what I understand everything is tied into the gut?

Kelly: That’s right, the gut has a huge impact on not only your physical, but mental health, playing a vital role in the brain's functionality. It’s important to not only consider what you eat, but also how you eat it. There’s a famous phrase ‘you are what you eat’. That’s not strictly true. It would be more accurate to say, ‘you are what you absorb’. You may have a good diet, but if you aren’t absorbing it you won't feel the benefits. My one tip would be to eat what’s around you, what’s in season. Juicy green salads are great in the summer months. Walking into the 360 Wellbeing Centre has an instant calming effect, from the quirky sofas and table, to the hand painted art on the wall by talented local artist Sally Ginger Illustrations. It’s clear on that a lot of love and thought has gone into the décor, making it a place you want to visit time and time again.

www.s40local.co.uk

What can someone expect from their first visit to 360?

Samantha: At 360 we believe in starting at the beginning. When you walk through the door we ensure we go through everything we offer, how we can help you and take the time to get to know you. The more we know - the better we can help you, and we can help everyone. A lot of people come in here because they want help with getting to the bottom of something, whether it’s regular headaches, IBS, insomnia, menopause, depression or aches and pains. A good place to start is with an intolerance and blood test. Our testing is amongst the best in the world and something we are very proud of. The information we get from both these tests enables us to treat most things with excellent results.

The 360 Wellbeing Centre has the only infrared sauna in the region. What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

Kelly: The infrared red penetrates deep into the muscle tissue, increasing the blood flow and encouraging the muscle to repair quicker. We had one lady in who had been in a car accident, she had tried everything to reduce the pain in her back. Naturally, she was sceptical when entering the sauna. When she came out almost completely pain free, she couldn’t believe it! One of our local running clubs use the sauna and a couple of runners have seen this reduce their times by over a minute!

Samanta: As mammals we can have a lack of CBD, which is a cannabinoid found in all animals. CBD can have a positive effect on pain relief, seizure prevention, anxiety and depression etc… We are running a road show, when it is safe to do so called ‘CBD and ME’ which helps people understand CBD, which one is best for them and how much to take etc… Our Nutra 7 supplement consists of seven key ingredients that improve mental health, boost blood circulation, aid weight loss, improve sleep quality and protect you from illnesses such as the common cold, amongst other things. Vitamin boosts seem to be all the rage in Hollywood right now, with celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Madonna and Simon Cowell swearing by them, and let’s be honest they look pretty good. This is something you offer here at 360 isn’t it? Samantha: We offer a range of intravenous vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

since the 1960s to increase people’s energy levels, detoxify the liver and kidneys, speed up the metabolism and improve hair and nail health. I think the A-list celebs have vitamin boosts as it slows down the aging process!

Out & About

Wentworth Woodhouse Looking for somewhere to visit or meet friends this summer?

Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Louise Porter & Sophie Chapman

W

entworth Woodhouse is just 45 minutes away, one junction up from Meadowhall, and possibly Rotherham’s best secret.

'One of the finest and grandest Georgian houses in England and at 606 ft, is famously considered to have the longest frontage, being twice the length of Buckingham Palace'. It has a rich and varied history, having links to the start of the English Civil war, the home of prime ministers, visited by Queen Victoria and used by military intelligence during World War 2. It was later used as a teacher training college where the beautiful ballroom was marked out as badminton courts for PE lessons. This same ballroom has more recently featured in the Netflix drama Victoria, and BBC’s, Gentleman Jack. The house was sold to a private owner in 1999 as a family residence, before a trust was set up in 2017 to manage the house. At the moment the delights of the house, which can usually be seen by joining a tour, are not available due to the restrictions. So, the trust have opened the gardens to the public, which are usually only accessible on a tour. The delightful gardens are on a par with any National Trust property but with a less commercial feel, entry is £5 for an adult and £2.50

for children (with a bookable ticket). Handwritten signs point you to areas of interest, but one of the friendly and enthusiastic guides informed us “the best way to see the garden is to get lost, there are things of interest hidden in the most unexpected places”.

There are wide open spaces and hidden spots, with areas to picnic and a catering van near the house serving drinks, snacks and ice creams - and it feels like a safe, pleasant place to spend a day socially distancing and getting some fresh air. For the children there’s a bear to find and an outdoor kitchen area for making mud pies. The garden also boasts a 15ft decorative punch bowl, apparently the size of your punch bowl denoted your status in the 1800s, a grand family indeed! There is also an 18th Century Ionic temple and a magnificent Camellia house, who’s state of slight disrepair adds to its charm. The South Terrace delivers fantastic vistas across the surrounding countryside and area, bordered by a 1500 ft. long retaining wall which you can promenade alongside, Pride and Prejudice style, admiring the views.

Wentworth Woodhouse is set in the village of Wentworth, a pretty traditional village with an impressive garden centre, previously the vegetable garden of Wentworth Woodhouse. The garden centre has its own grotto style garden, a farm and a maze - itself worth a visit. Don’t go expecting manicured perfection, the ‘in progressness (!?)’ of the Woodhouse adds to its charm, and, by visiting, you’re supporting the important work to get this interesting and historical beauty restored.

I recommend visiting both the house and gardens, when we can, but for now it’s just the gardens. You can visit another time to discover the treasures of the house (in the past they did a full house and gardens tour, which took 4.5hours, so unless you’re a die hard, it’s perhaps better to do it in stages). And if you do visit, we’d love to know what you think. www.wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk

Chesterfield Specsavers Back Open for Business

Words & Images: Specsavers

NOW OPEN, but with a safetyfirst protocol in place, Matlock and Chesterfield’s optometry director, Allissa Charlesworth, tells us about the in-store changes to expect, how she kept busy over lockdown (even starring in a national tv ad!), and why it’s really important for us to get our eye tests booked in after 100 days of lockdown.

We’re delighted to be back open for our customers in Chesterfield. Although we were open for essential care and emergencies throughout lockdown, it definitely wasn’t the same without being able to welcome in the smiling faces of our regulars for a catch-up and a chat.

Along with the rest of the town, we kicked off our lockdown by looking to keep ourselves busy by helping the community and charities that might need it. As part of this, we launched a Page 30

fundraiser that paid for half a dozen electronic tablets for local care homes, so elderly residents could still keep in touch with their families while in lockdown. It was a true team effort which we’re all really proud of. You might have even seen a sneak appearance of yours truly talking about it on the recent national tv ad! As things start getting back to normal, we understand you might be feeling a bit nervous about coming into store again. But with all that screen-time working from home, it's certain 100 days of lockdown will have taken a toll on our eyesight over recent months. We’re also really concerned about potentially dangerous issues such as glaucoma or retinal issues which may have gone undiagnosed, which is why it’s great to get people back into store.

To make this happen, we’ve made some changes to our normal practices, making sure our stores are as safe as possible for customers and staff alike. We've even opened a "pop up shop" just to the rear of the store. This will give us additional space to spread out our footfall, and will also give us an extra staff room for our team to enjoy their breaks safely while adhering to social distancing. If you need a sight test you’ll be able to book appointments as normal, but we’ll give you a call back to make sure you’re getting the right help – whether that’s in store with us, or talking to us remotely using our brand new RemoteCare. All collections and adjustments will now be at the Pop Up Shop, to increase safety and reduce waiting times.

www.s40local.co.uk

Here's what else we’re doing We’re sticking to the social distancing guidelines, so the number of people in store will be limited, with one member of the household at a time (unless you’re with a child or vulnerable adult), and we’ll also ask that you keep at least two metres apart to keep each other safe.

Following government guidelines, our store teams will be wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for their protection as well as yours. You are also invited to wear a face covering.

You’re more than welcome to try on as many glasses as you’d like, but after you’re done we’ll ask you to give them back to us so we can give them a good clean before we put them back out for the next person to touch or try on.

After each person we see in our test rooms, we are thoroughly disinfecting the room and all the testing equipment used during the eye test, ready for the next appointment.

We’re also going to avoid using cash, so if you can, please pay by card or electronic payment instead.

And, if you buy a new pair of glasses after your eye test, ask us about home delivery. There’s no need to come back in store, and you can get them direct to your door. If you’ve got an appointment booked, but you’re not feeling well or you have any COVID-19 symptoms, we’d ask that you don’t come in until you’re feeling better. And we’ll make sure to arrange for a later date. As you’ll see, we’ve spent a long time over lockdown getting our practices in place to reassure staff and customers back to store. I personally can’t wait to welcome the smiling faces of our customers back in store again! If you’d like to speak to us about your eye health, please call us or visit our website.

Tipple Adventures.

Bespoke pop up mobile bar, plus grazing boxes to your door. Words: Paul Chapman Images Tipple Adventures

T

ipple Adventures was established in 2018 and has adapted to offer bespoke Grazing boxes, due to Covid. Grazing boxes are tasty boxes of food and a choice tipples, delivered to your door. Emma Garlick is the owner of Tipple Adventures and brought me up to date with progress since starting her business.

“It all started in 2018 after I left my job in the events industry” explains Emma. “Working with so many different customers, it became clear there was a gap in the market - people wanted an impressive, memorable celebration or party, but they often wanted it at their own home or in a unique exclusive environment. I decided to set up a business to ‘bring the celebration to you’, and Tipple Adventures was born.

“Grazing boxes offer the opportunity to enjoy our fantastic food accompanied with fine wines, local craft beers and cocktails in a jar. Customers are missing their holidays as much as we are, so I have created Grazing boxes, specific to continental regions; Spain, France, Italy, a local Derbyshire grazing box for those missing their local pub and a breakfast box to satisfy your brunch fix. The majority of our produce is from local suppliers; Cheese Factor Chesterfield, The Bulls Head, Holymoorside and Frutura, Wingerworth. I’m proud to be a local business supporting local business.” “Tipple Adventures also offer a complete pop-up mobile bar that can be set up at an outdoor or indoor event and we can accompany the pop-up bar with ‘Whinny’ our converted horsebox bar.

We can also provide stylish settings, lights and a marquee to ensure you and your guests can stay comfortable, should the British weather do its best to dampen spirits. Page 34

“I’ve worked with experienced Mixologists, people skilled with inventing, preparing, and serving mixed drinks, or cocktails - the primary focus of any party is the bar and having a fantastic array of quality drinks available for guests to enjoy, really enhances the event!” “The events business has been going well and 2020 was set to be our biggest year, with two events booked every week during the Spring and Summer. But, like all businesses I got thrown a curve ball in March and had to think creatively about how I could adapt my business”, explains Emma. “So, at the start of lockdown we obtained the necessary food hygiene ratings, picking up the highest rating, the correct permissions and licensing from our local council and set about bringing the party to your doorstep through the Grazing boxes.” The Grazing boxes are available to order for delivery and have become a permanent service that Emma will continue to offer, even once the guidelines on events have changed.

With regards to outdoor events, Emma is happy to talk to anyone looking to host a bespoke, private party, “this is the ideal way to host an event post lockdown; your own bar, a location of your choice which you can ensure is safe and a guest list you control” says Emma. She is keen to stress that she will only be offering the full mobile bar once it’s safe for her, her staff and her customers alike. @tippleAdventures www.tippleadventures.com

You're In Safe Hands Jones & Co.

C

hesterfield’s award-winning financial advice firm, Jones & Co, is now bigger and better and ensuring its clients are in even safer hands than ever before.

Founded back in 2009 by Mark Jones, Jones & Co is located on Glumangate in the very heart of the town centre. Its offices are a source of great pride for Managing Director, Mark, who has spent a great deal of time and effort to create a highly professional and hospitable environment for clients and colleagues alike. A very warm welcome “Everyone who visits our offices is guaranteed a very warm welcome by every member of our team,” enthuses Mark. “Danielle, our Office Manager, and Laura, our Financial Services administrator, are usually the first faces you’ll see when you get to Jones & Co and they’re always smiling, I’m not sure how they do it!

Page 36

“It’s really important that people feel at ease whenever they come to see us because we firmly believe in establishing long-term working relationships with each and every one of our clients. I’m very happy that we’ve managed to create that here – friendly faces on reception and exceptional financial advice and services from our highly qualified advisors, just two of the many reasons clients spontaneously recommend us to friends and family.” Unbiased, bespoke and jargon-free advice Continues Mark: “Over the last 10 years, it’s been my focus to grow the company sustainably by recruiting the right people who wholeheartedly support our ethos of providing unbiased, bespoke and jargon-free advice with the aim of preserving or accumulating wealth and security for our clients. “We now have a team of four financial planning professionals in place – Suzanne Jeakins, Pauline

www.s40local.co.uk

Fernandes, Kirk Yeomans and I – who are committed to meeting the financial needs of people of all ages and backgrounds from across the UK. From pensions and retirement advice, to wealth management and business protection, we’re here to provide effective and efficient financial planning advice, and we have an exceptional track record. We’re also proud to be in a position to nurture new talent as well as acquire other financial services practices in the industry and, as such, we have a trainee independent financial advisor, Warren Parkin, who has been with us for just over 12 months. Building a stable future “When it comes to retirement planning, we don’t believe it’s all about pensions – that’s just one way to build a stable future. We work with individuals who are at all stages of retirement from 18-year olds who have no retirement plans in place to those who are imminently about to retire with company and personal pension plans. “Whatever the situation, it’s our job to develop a financial strategy that will help each client to achieve their own personal retirement goals. It’s all about helping people make the right decisions and assisting them to gain the maximum income possible from hard-earned savings made over the years. A totally unbiased and professional view “When it comes to investment advice and financial planning, we’re here to unravel and make sense of the myriad options available on the open market from basic high street deposit accounts to complex risk-based investments.

“Whatever a client’s requirements, we will always start with a conversation about what and where that person sees themselves and what they’d specifically like to achieve from wealth management. As such, we use an in-depth questionnaire that we go through with every client to find out more about them and their approach to risk. This then enables us to devise a bespoke structure or portfolio to ensure we can advise on the right solution for their circumstances. And that’s something that we formally review on an annual basis or whenever each client wishes. Many clients simply pop in to see us for a catch-up if they’re passing, that’s how we operate, we’re always here to help and advise over a cuppa!

Vision Portfolios exclusively from Jones & Co – outperforming the sector “In order to continue to provide our clients with an unrivalled level of service, back in May 2019, I began work on creating a brand new range of investment portfolios. Our Vision Portfolios launched in June last year and delivered beyond my expectations in the first 12 months of going live, with our medium risk fund achieving positive growth results through a volatile market loss in February 2020 due to Covid-19*.

“Not only have they outperformed the sector benchmarks for risk rated funds, they have outperformed the Rayner Spencer Mills (RSMR) Portfolios across all risk levels, which were the range of portfolios used previously**. This clearly demonstrated, at an early stage the quality of the Vision Portfolios, and I’m confident that they will continue to grow and succeed in the future. What’s more, our investment committee now boasts Chartered Wealth Manager, and previous Brewin Dolphin and Charles Stanley team member, Pauline Fernandes.” In ever safer hands “During these unprecedented times, we are focusing on providing all of our clients with independent financial advice remotely, whenever the need arises. We call this ‘remote working’ and it enables us to protect our team and our clients whilst providing the very best service we can, exactly as if we were meeting up in person. So, not only are our clients’ financial plans in even safer hands than ever before, so is everyone associated with Jones & Co.” To arrange a free, no obligation consultation with Mark, Suzanne, Pauline or Kirk, please call 01246 550521, email: advice@ ifajonesandco.uk or visit www.ifajonesandco. uk *Source: Financial Express Analytics report 09/07/2020 **Please note, past performance has no bearing on future returns.

Meeting Mr Hirst Brookfield’s Head teacher Words: Aisling Rippin

A

parent at the school for many years, Mr Hirst became head teacher at Brookfield just over a year ago. Working in education for the majority of his career, he started off as an economics teacher. Since then he has progressed to become head teacher, despite not having that goal at the start of his career. Making what he called a natural progression, Mr Hirst says he strives to be the best as possible at whatever he does. As a local resident, Mr Hirst feels a sense of never being off duty; he regularly bumps into students and parents whilst walking his dogs, and has students as his neighbours. However, despite the constant responsibility, Mr Hirst loves where he works, saying living locally helps him feel invested in the school. Brookfield has a reputation as a successful school, with many families wanting their children to attend. Mr Hirst drives to deliver a thriving school and hopes to continue improving the school. Whatever pathway students choose, he wants them to have the self-confidence to go into the world, and feel able to achieve with a sense of pride and success. Being head teacher can have its pressures and throughout the past few months I think we have all learnt how to cope with stress. Mr Hirst enjoys walking his dogs and playing sport (being a loyal supporter of Barnsley football team). Most of all though, he enjoys reading, finding it an excellent way to relax. As with probably the vast majority of people, the biggest challenge in his career has been the recent COVID-19 crisis. The strangest thing for him is having virtually no interactions with students, which he considers an important and rewarding part of his job. However, one positive from lockdown has been how hardworking the staff are, with Mr Hirst receiving many comments from parents thanking the staff for their continued support and efforts to make home learning as rewarding and Page 40

engaging as possible. He says the staff have been determined to support the plans that have kept evolving through lockdown. Everything has been a team based effort and Mr Hirst takes pride in this. Through lockdown, Brookfield school has been open to the children of keyworkers and more recently, open again to year 10 and 12 students. The partial reopening of school has been good to see and the staff of Brookfield have found it helpful to see students face to face and discuss how they are doing, instead of communicating from behind a screen. Obviously, these times are strange and no one knows quite what to expect when school restarts full-time in September. However, Brookfield is certain that all students should be in school and doing all of their lessons, which Mr Hirst feels is important. As well as this, Mr Hirst is aiming for a smooth transition back into school. School won’t start with 100% intensity, with the sole focus on catching up on lost time. Instead, Mr Hirst wants a re-acclimatisation period for the students, so as not to cause more stress in this already stressful time. Brookfield recognises the hard work and dedication of students through lockdown and is looking forward to continuing student’s education in a more usual way next year. He says school will also identify those students who need additional catch up support and provide that support, despite it being a tall order. When asked to describe these last four months in a few words, Mr Hirst chose humbling and gratifying. He says these words reflect the way staff, students and parents have come together and worked together throughout these challenging times. It seems clear that in Brookfield Community School the community is the most important.

This year we celebrated 75 years since our victory in Europe. 75 years ago Great Britain was a different place, a time of hope and optimism shared by every man, woman and child. The Streets were filled with Union flags and the happy laughter of children playing. Stepping through the door of the Vintage Tearooms in Chesterfield you are filled with a sense of emotion experienced by our ancestors 75 years ago on that oh, so glorious day. From the union flags adorning the walls to the staff in period attire, The Vintage Tearooms is a classy eatery, an experience not to be missed. Fragrance tea and the sweet smell of cake greet you at the Vintage Tearooms and there’s a timely and varied menu. With a range of teas even the Queen would be enviable of, Earl Grey, Green Tea, Chamomile, Darjeeling and English breakfast tea... each sip takes you to its place of origin.

What is tea without a slice of cake? With an array of cakes even Mary Berry would be proud of, there’s something for everyone, all freshly baked from a local, independent supplier, soft and moist, not a soggy bottom in sight! Red Velvet, Sticky toffee, Neapolitan, Victoria, Orange polenta, Vegan Chocolate, and kid‘s favourite, the Jammy Dodger!

It’s not only ladies who lunch, or breakfast, or brunch! The Vintage Rooms offer a great range of afternoon tea options and a menu to suit even the most discernible pallet, there really is something for everyone. The full English breakfast, consisting of bacon, poached egg, sausage, beans and a grilled tomato but if a full English isn’t to your taste you may wish to choose one of the freshly baked scones and wash it down with a flat white or latte from the coffee menu. When the weather graces us with sunshine, the Vintage Tearooms has the most delightful outdoor space with traditional wood seating and good old British bunting. Should you wish to share their selection of tea’s and cake at home, takeaway options are also available.

Pizza The Vintage Rooms has two very welcome new additions; the woodfire pizza oven and make your own at home pizza kits. Meat, vegi, vegan and gluten free kits are available and proving very popular since their launch just a few weeks ago. Each kit makes two pizzas feeding up to four people. They’re a fun and tasty learning activity to do at home with the kids, or impress your partner or party guests with your pizza skills! The Vintage Tearooms serve woodfired pizzas, Thursday Friday and Saturday, and are two for the price of one, permanently! The woodfire pizza oven has made the Vintage tearooms the perfect place to relax, kick back, enjoy so some great food and a good cuppa. Brookfield News

Brookfield News From three students in years 11, 12 and 13, we find out what lockdown meant to them. Edited by Brookfield Journalism Group

My Lockdown: Anja Raine Y11 2020 Many people have learnt lessons in lockdown. I started lockdown in shock, of having my focus of GCSEs suddenly changed due to exam cancellations. The majority of my learning had focused on learning to be examined. For the next few weeks I was still given work in relation to my GCSE courses; although we were no longer doing the exams, many of our teachers still wanted us to complete the course, and have the thorough and balanced education many teachers are passionate about. I realised that it is not just the number on the exam that mattered but the content we are taught. Education is so vital, I don’t think anyone should ever feel truly done with learning, else we will end up fixed in everything we know. Through lockdown, I have had low weeks and high weeks for motivation. At the end of them all I have found learning points; such as not to read the news at night; instead, why not consume it in the morning? Or, to utilise the time without being flat, writing lists and emptying my head in a journal to help me feel less drained. Or in one of those high weeks for motivation I have managed to watch a Ted-Ed talk on creative writing.

After the first few weeks of lockdown, we were no longer being set work daily, and instead, given longer tasks to bridge the gap to A Levels; with longer deadlines and done a little bit at the time. As a result, I have been learning for preparation. This preparation learning allows me to read sources which will tool me for the next two academic years. Some of this learning may be entirely new for me and allows me to create more balanced views - on current affairs for example. Another kind of learning in lockdown is learning for enjoyment, such as spending my time reading novels and magazines, for no reason other than enjoyment.

My last kind of learning is learning from privilege; for example, in light of recent events such as the murder of George Floyd, I have been learning more on topics such as race and trying to listen to stories of black lives and experiences. This is learning from privilege because some of it I wasn’t aware of - it hasn’t been my experience. This kind of learning is vital as we need to hear the stories of people from all backgrounds. Overall, I have learnt that education goes further than exams.

f

My Lockdown: George Harris Y12 2020 Aside from all the new music I’ve discovered, and the books I’ve read, and the TV shows I’ve binged, I think the biggest thing I’ve got out of this lockdown is better time management.

I know that’s not exciting at all: I could have learnt to do something glamorous - sword swallowing or spitting fire - but I definitely think it’s helped in my day to day life. Before COVID-19 turned all of our lives upside down, I don’t think I was very good with time management. Long ago when everything was normal I didn’t like deadlines: I didn’t hate them or anything but any deadline I got gave me a sense of dread - because I knew I’d put that work off right until the last minute. But now, because I’ve been stuck at home I’ve had the chance to finish work in advance, I’ve felt more proactive and motivated. It probably comes from the fact that I’ve got nothing better to do, but hopefully when everything goes back to normality (whenever that is) I can carry on spending my time wisely and not putting everything off ‘til the last minute.

My Lockdown: Vic Ruck Y13 2020 If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from being under lockdown and seeing barely anything or anyone apart from the confines of my house, is that I really should make the most of the time I spend with people. It’s a massive cliché that every adult reels off to make sure you don’t 'lose' your best years, but, in all honesty, it’s true. Having to stay at home for 3+ months made me realise how lucky I was to see my friends as often as I did when the world wasn’t as crazy!

Community

Why ... Words: Paul Chapman Images: Rotary Chesterfield

... am I a member of Chesterfield Satellite Rotary Club? It’s so I can give a little back. For over 11 years I’ve created a living from local businesses and the community around me, being a member of Rotary gives me another way to support my local community and raise funds for some of the great causes I hear about through S40 Local – oh, and they run a classic car show, and I’m always up for that! The group understands that I'll do what I can, and I won’t be able to attend every event and meeting. Like many others, I don’t have unlimited time and have other commitments – and that’s fine!

The Satellite Club was formed in 2016, as a way of attracting new members. Like many historical organisations times change and groups need to change with them. Members grow old, numbers drop and younger people don’t want to get involved.

The Chesterfield club decided to make a change, to attract a more youthful membership, a different way of operating to attract people that weren’t always retired and free to meet up. It’s been successful, today there are 20 members in the Satellite Club, the youngest being 23 and a fairly even split of women and men.

At my first meeting, held in Loundsley Green Community Centre, I was impressed by the funds the group had raised, presentations took place to Bluebell Wood, The Children’s Hospital charity and Helens Trust, £6000 given to thankful causes. Page 44

What struck me about the services the various charities provide was that I assumed their service was part of our National Health Service, but no, most of these charities exist to plug the gaps in statutory services. Air ambulance for example, is called out to major incidents across each county, but each county runs as a stand-alone charity, finding funds.

In the two years I’ve been attending club meetings the events we’ve covered include, the annual Classic Car Shows at Renishaw and Ashover, marshalling for the Chesterfield Half Marathon, helping marshal at the Scarcliffe Soapbox Derby, a Swishing event held early this year, two annual quizzes held at Loundsley Green Community Centre (great fun and always a sell-out), local school Art Exhibitions held at St Andrews Church on Newbold Road, inter school public speaking competitions, running a jumble sale at Ashgate Croft School, presently we’re saving 2 litre plastic bottles to make an Eco greenhouse for Walton & Holymoorside School and held the junior verse competition. This is just the stuff I can recall, every event is about building the community or raising funds for local charities. I have to admit to initially feeling a little out of my comfort zone. It takes me a while to feel comfortable as part of a new group, and to be able to feel that I can make a suitable contribution but everyone has different skills, experience, contacts and energy, and it’s the combined effort that

www.s40local.co.uk

enables the events to come together and the funds to be raised.

Due to COVID-19 the classic car show at Renishaw Hall was cancelled, this is the main fund-raiser for the club, so everyone was devastated. Not to be beaten though we developed an online event, entrants posting their classic vehicles on Instagram and making a small donation to do so, we also sought sponsors as usual. This saw £4000, donated to support Ashgate Hospicecare, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, The Elm Foundation and Weston Park Cancer Charity. An amazing achievement and demonstration of the club’s ability to adapt and commitment to supporting the charities. Rotary was originally formed when a group of business owners got together to see how they could support each other and their community, each time they would meet at the next business owner’s location and thus the name was sorted. Today Rotary is a worldwide organisation with 2.3 million members, who all work to the moto of ‘Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best’.

There is a minimal cost to being member, but it all goes into the funding pot, and the minimum level of involvement is to turn up to the monthly meetings (5:30 to 7pm) on the first Wednesday of the month at the Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club. There are social events, pub nights, BBQs, bowling, walks, axe throwing etc, but you’re not forced to go, and what I like about the club is you can contribute whatever skills you have. I do a bit of design work here and there, have towed the 1970s caravan around and am presently trying to figure out how we can get back to Rotary’s roots of supporting local businesses. If, like me, you want to do your bit to support the local community, the Chesterfield Satellite Rotary club might be a good way to do it. Paul Davies (T: 07753 605 272) deals with membership, so give him a call to arrange a visit to our next meeting. Hopefully, I’ll see some of you there.

HELP! How do I get my child ready to go back to school? Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic Kip has continued to work with their students with an online support plan. They have had plenty of time to talk to their parents about their concerns about school reopening and the safety measures in place for their children. Let us share how we are advising them to best prepare their child for a return to school and allay any fears the child may have of catching the virus and giving it to grandparents or mummy and daddy. Have you spoken with your child about the virus much? Are they fearful of meeting others? Do they worry about making a mistake and catching the virus? If you are nervous about sending them back to school, they will pick up on that and it will increase their fears. We are the adults, we can think logically and be realistic about the risks, but our children are the sum of what they hear us say, what they see and what other people say within their hearing. No 1. Talk to your child during August about how their teachers have been working in and around the schools all the time they have been at home. By September the teachers will know exactly what the children need to do to stay safe and will have plenty of time to explain it to them.

No 2. Start making play dates with their friends at home in your garden or in the park. Familiarise them with reconnecting with their friends face to face and having fun. Picnics where you all prepare your own food can be fun. Make sure they use gel on their hands when out and wash them very well each time they come home.

No 3. Ask them their views on your family’s experience of lockdown. Highlight the good bits and the hard bits. It is easing now, so the way it was different in lockdown can be contrasted with how much fun it will be to be back at school with exciting things to do in class. Ask them how they feel about going back; what are they concerned about? Bringing it out into the open means it is ok to talk about it. No 4. If you have been home schooling as part of the routine it is ok to continue with this to keep them engaged, but it is also ok to make a ‘holiday’ from schoolwork. If you can go away on holiday, then fine, but if not make ‘days out’ the holiday for this year. Many parents worry that their children have missed a lot of education, but if you look at the length of school life then students spend a minimum of 11 years in full time education. 3-4 months won’t make or break their lives. Students doing exams are in a different situation and there will be innovative ways to overcome this. Finally enjoy your summer as a family. Let them get back into school and if at the end of September you feel your child would benefit from extra support then contact Jo for an assessment. The ‘gap’ may not be as wide as you think! Kip can do catch up support sessions with no obligation to a long term learning programme.

Contact Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611.

Garden Tips

Summer Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

• Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted. They usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them, but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. • Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. • Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. • Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. • If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. • Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. • Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. • Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... • Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.

Introducing: Sian Greenwood Registered Manager for Willowstone Care in Chesterfield: Specialists in Home Care

important to be patient and handle each situation with a calm and collected attitude. Building confidence and trust enables us to support people in the most compassionate way. There is a great deal of responsibility ensuring the people we support have the life and care they require and deserve.

Words: Sain Greenwood.

Respect for privacy, physical and emotional wellbeing, the right to make your own choices and treating with dignity at all times is key. Our clients are empowered and encouraged to take control of their life, for even the small choices and decisions.

To work in a social care role you need to love what you do, it's evident to the person receiving care. It's not just a job, it’s a vocation, this is why we only provide carers who are passionate about their role and want to provide outstanding care. Working closely with our nurse owner, allows us to identify possible problems before they arise, and use clinical knowledge to reduce the chance of hospital admissions.

Growing up in a tight knit family inspired me to work in social care. We supported my, very much loved, Auntie who had varying disabilities and whom I was close to.

My career started as a support worker, supporting people with learning disabilities and mental health challenges. This gave me experience in supporting people to be independent and focus on person centred care.

At Willowstone we specialise in holistic home care, that is right for you and your family. Getting the right care in place is simple, just contact us for your free consultation and let us guide you to make the right choice for total peace of mind.

In the last six years I have used my knowledge and experience to manage at a well known charity and became involved in supporting carers and clients, changing and improving the way we deliver care. Wanting a new challenge, I changed direction and started working with adults in the community for Willowstone. We provide high standards of care, and work in partnership with clients and their families to promote independence. We keep people safe in their own home, a priority for people who want to remain surrounded by the people they love. We offer support from simple companionship to complex and palliative care. At Willowstone we support vulnerable people with a variety of needs which is incredibly challenging, but also extremely rewarding, we can make a positive improvement to lives on a daily basis. A loss of independence can be difficult and showing empathy, being able to connect and help people through really makes a difference. It's Page 50

Looking for Sponsors: Chesterfield FC Women

Chesterfield FC Women are looking for local sponsors for the senior and girls academy teams, which provide a pathway for local women and girls to the first team.

Sadie Henson says "We have around 120 girls and women playing for the club. We rely a heavily on local sponsorship, even though we are affiliated with the men’s team our finances are completely separate and we are self funded.

"We have a lot of new and exciting things planned for our players. I understand it has been a difficult year so far, but we are hoping that football will start again in the not too distant future and we want all our girls to have things in place."

If you own a business that is able to help, please contact Sadie as below to discuss the various sponsorship levels available. Contact: Sadie Henson 07708 957563 or email women@chesterfield-fc.co.uk

Defibrillators

W

hen used within the first 3-5 minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest, a defibrillator can dramatically increase the chance of survival from less than 5% to as much as 70%. That’s why knowing the location of defibrillators could be vitally important. When someone has a sudden cardiac arrest every single second counts and the knowledge could mean the difference between life and death. In 2018 the British Heart Foundation started a project, in conjunction with Microsoft, to set up ‘The Circuit’, a National Defibrillator Network. Their aim, a defibrillator location database for use by all UK NHS Ambulance Trusts, meaning when a 999 call comes in, the Ambulance Service can direct the caller to the nearest defibrillator. The national database isn’t open to the public, only the NHS, but needs everyone's help to input the location of local defibrillators. With all defibrillators mapped out the NHS can guide the caller to the nearest defibrillator, helping to save lives. Less than 1 in 10 people survive an outof-hospital-cardiac-arrest, but accessible defibrillators should change that statistic.

Defibrillators are designed to be used by virtually anyone with little or no training or experience. Most defibrillators have voice guided instructions, meaning you can respond and provide immediate lifesaving treatment before the ambulance service arrives. Please note: the most important thing is to dial 999 and state 'start CPR'. If you're on your own don't interrupt CPR to go get a defibrillator.

Find The Blessing St Thomas' Brampton created this brightly coloured blessing notice, as we emerged from lockdown, and set off to place it on the large community noticeboard on the Morrisons side of the roundabout.

Unfortunately the board has vanished without a trace! St Thomas’ Church took responsibility for the community noticeboard in 2016, and are baffled by its disappearance, no one has been in touch to let them know it was being removed.

Does anyone know where it is? The church would love to know, please contact Jane: jane.stthomasbrampton@gmail.com, if you can shed any light. St Thomas' have placed 12 smaller, A6 sized, laminated, versions of the blessing around Brampton. For a small prize, please see if you can find them all, send your entry with the locations, by post to: Jane Simmonds, St Thomas’ Church, Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield, S40 3AW before 31 August.

St Thomas' have also opened the church for private, individual prayer during the week. The same at St Peter's church, Holymoorside (Sunday afternoon). Check the times in the advert below if you want to go and find a time for peace and prayer. They are also pleased to say that the coffee shop is open again, Monday to Friday from 9am to 3:30pm, they have space inside and out, and offer a takeaway menu. Chesterfield Foodbank

Foodbank Donations

Words: Aisling Rippin

Words: Paul Chapman

These times have been challenging for everyone, but hunger is a challenge no one should face.

That’s why, throughout lockdown, Chesterfield foodbank has been providing vital support to those who need it most. They provide nutritionally balanced emergency food for three days and support to local people in crisis. The foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

Last edition, in our Intro, we suggested that people come together as a street or neighbourhood and make up a basket of goods to donate to your local foodbank.

As well as providing emergency food supplies, before lockdown, Chesterfield foodbank invited clients into its centres (located in central Chesterfield, Brimington, Loundsley Green and New Whittington) for tea, biscuits and a supportive chat. They believe emotionally supporting their clients is important, and are looking forward to restarting this service, once it's safe.

RICHARD'S STORY

"WITHOUT THE FOODBANK I DON'T THINK I'D BE HERE TODAY" Since lockdown began, the foodbank has increased their deliveries, helping them to reach isolated areas. This has helped those in financial difficulty who are also isolating.

So far in 2020, Chesterfield foodbank has fed 1,787 people. Last year, they provided 3,262 threeday emergency food supplies to adults in crisis. I think we can all agree the foodbank does incredible work in our community. But they can’t do this without the support of the community. If you can, please consider donating long-lasting food items or money to this incredible cause. You can donate to your local foodbank at many supermarkets, including, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and Iceland. Donations are also taken at Chesterfield library.

Jo Borroughs, of Somersall, dropped me a note as below. "Your comment in last month’s S40 about doing a street collection prompted me to ask neighbours on Queen Mary Road to drop contributions off at my door... three weeks later and I have 62 items to drop off at Morrisons... a great community response, everyone has been very generous." Kate, on our street, also arranged a street food collection after spotting a post on a facebook group asking for donations for the Chesterfield Community Food Hut.

She contacted everyone on the street and started taking donations from people, within a few days ten bags and two boxes of food were collected and handed over to a very grateful foodbank and they even came out to collect. Can we add our thanks from S40 Local to Jo and Kate for coordinating something that's so simple yet so effective and important to so many in our community at the moment. And also, a big well done, to all the volunteers running foodbanks across the county, for all the hard work they do. Chesterfieldcommunityfoodhut

Opinion

Consequences: Of a Plastic Free Chesterfield. Words: Paul Chapman & Barry Twigg

G

reg Hewitt is a campaigner and activist highlighting the concerns and environmental issues relating to the use of plastic. Last month Greg’s article ’One Man’s War on Plastic’ prompted local resident and chairman of National Flexible, Barry Twigg, to respond.

Barry’s company is the UK's largest distributor of polypropylene, laminates and special films, and after a career manufacturing plastic goods, he wanted to put the record straight about the virtues of this strong, innovative, robust and important material. Barry said...

“I read last month’s article proposing ‘A Plastic Free Chesterfield’ with considerable interest and felt it may also be of interest to your readers to consider some of the consequences what would occur should we adopt the proposal of a Plastic Free Chesterfield. For example;

1. The NHS fight against the virus. The NHS is currently using circa 1 billion pieces per month of ‘single use plastic’ for gowns, masks, visors, gloves, shoe coverings, etc. No doubt the Royal Hospital is using its share and welcomes its weekly supplies. The Government has just placed an order for 28 billion more PPE items as demand Worldwide continues to grow. 2. Pharmaceuticals. In the UK, some 30 million people per day take tablets, add to this the millions of creams, salves, ointments and medicines, all of which come in ‘single use plastic’. These figures give just some appreciation of how much our sick and elderly rely on the safe storage and portion control of single use plastic for their medication.

3. Food Waste. Food waste is estimated to be the World's third highest contributor to global warming. China and USA being numbers 1 & 2. This is due to methane gas emissions which are 10 x more toxic than CO2 in our atmosphere. Underdeveloped nations waste up to 50% of all food produced as it is not packed due to lack of packaging in handling, storage and distribution. The UK food lost is below 10% in manufacture, distribution, storage and sale, this difference is primarily due to Single Use Plastic packaging of virtually all our perishable food. One good example is the shelf life of a cut cucumber. Unwrapped, this is 3 days, plastic wrapped it is 14 days. Page 62

4. Saving the Earth’s resources / reducing global warming. Multiple international life cycle analysis (LCA) confirm that plastic uses less of the Earth's resources and generates less CO2 emissions in manufacture than any of the alternative materials, be they paper, board, glass or tin. One example is the 2019 report from European Institute of Environmental Research which concluded that a reduction of 22 million TPA pf CO2 emissions could be achieved if these other materials currently used for packaging were all replaced by plastic. 5. Finally, all plastic is 100% recyclable, either mechanically or chemically. In the UK, we simply don’t bother to collect and separate it for recycling and reuse. With regard to plastic pollution in the oceans, the UK contributes just 0.02% of waste plastic in the oceans, this is mostly discarded fishing gear and plastic refuse thrown from boats.

The Plastics Industry, in 2019, paid £280 million for collection and recycling of waste plastic, however, the Environment Agency does not check how this money is invested and simply allows the plastic waste to be exported.” Barry’s points remind us that no environmental action or change is straightforward, and the complexities at play in reducing the use of plastics cannot be achieved by ‘One Man’s War on Plastics’.

We all have a responsibility for reducing ‘single use, unnecessary plastics where they are not saving lives or reducing food waste – by saying ‘no plastic’ where we can, we can all have an impact. We can re-use the plastic we do have, I would never advocate throwing away good strong plastic containers as a way to go plastic free, that would be counter intuitive. I would love to see better recycling and reuse, and for more people to dispose of plastics responsibly, I’ll continue to do what I can but I’m just one small cog of a very large machine. For now, I’m going to agree with both Barry and Greg – I’ll appreciate that plastic has some very positive applications and I’m going to continue to reduce my personal use where I can. I’ll leave it with you to form your own opinion.
