Intro
Hi and welcome to our Autumn edition.
It's been six weeks between editions as we take a break to slot in a couple of weeks off over the summer.
We managed to escape to the western tip of the Lake District, away from the honey traps that are Ambleside and Windermere. We walked some hills; the kids swam in some tarns and I even braved a waterfall shower on the day when temperatures felt like they were going to blow the thermometers.
Social distancing could be put aside in the hills as there weren't many people around, and we managed to wind down, although it did take me a good three or four days to get into holiday mode. Whilst away I was thinking about new ideas and articles and it occurred to me that by going out less due to COVID, I'm not meeting people and talking about stuff that's happening, so I'm asking for your help. Has COVID meant your community group meets outside now? Are your church services streamed live? Perhaps you have a short story, poem, photographs to share, or an event you're organising? You could nominate an amazing person and we can share their story - or just tell us your community message.
Please also support us and mention S40 Local when you do contact our advertisers - it makes a real difference, encourages people to advertise and keeps the magazine going. Stay safe and see you again in the November edition. Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

Herbert & Rose Meet local illustrator Ali Scothern from Herbert & Rose. Words: Simon Paterson Illustration: Ali Scothern, Herbert & Rose.
P
erusing Instagram, we stumbled across Ali Scothern's (Herbert & Rose) images and we knew we had found our next cover artist.
Her Instagram feed featured her beautiful illustrations of some of our most cherished and historic buildings so we approached her to take on this edition's cover. Ali lives in Chesterfield with her husband and two teenage boys, she is a local teacher who loves being out in the Peaks and browsing the local market. We asked Ali about her unique style, her inspirations and what she loves about living in Derbyshire. How old were you when you started drawing? "I honestly cannot remember, starting out in primary school I enjoyed drawing and painting. It was my teacher in secondary school who encouraged me to hone my skills. As a teenager, I steered my studies towards a career in art and design. In my late teens I lost confidence in my artistic abilities however, and pursued a career teaching languages instead."
How did your unique style of illustrating evolve? "When I began painting again as an adult, I fell in love with watercolours, I love the different effects they create. I also love to draw with ink and a dip pen, so many of my illustrations combine the two."
How did Herbert and Rose come about and where did you get the name? "Herbert was my grandfather’s name and Rose, my mother’s name. When mum died a few years ago I felt compelled to really push my art and wanted to create a brand name, it seemed fitting to choose the names from two prominent figures in my family and I thought Herbert and Rose sounded perfect. I didn’t choose my Dad’s name, because his name was Ron, and I didn’t think Ron and Rose sounded quite as good!" Which is your favourite piece of work? "My favourite has to be ‘Say hello’, an illustration of a young and older hare. It was one of the first pieces I made into a print and it continues to be a best seller." Page 6
What inspired you to illustrate Chesterfield’s Theatres and Museum? "We’ve only lived in Chesterfield for the past couple of years and I couldn’t believe how many beautiful, old buildings there were and I wanted to challenge myself to try something different. In time I'd like to illustrate more of them, there are so many to choose from."
Who do you admire in the Illustrator world? "I love Quentin Blake’s illustrations as they are so playful, and his uneven or exaggerated lines create the most delightful characters. I also admire Helen Oxenbury’s work, she uses watercolours effortlessly to create wonderful children’s illustrations."
If you could illustrate for any author, who would you choose and why? "Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows was a childhood favourite. Endowing animals found in British wildlife with human characteristics and creating the imaginative stories really appealed to me as a child. To illustrate these stories would have been wonderful. Having said that, Robert Ingpen’s whimsical illustrations would take some beating!" What’s your favourite piece of Derbyshire artwork or sculpture? "It has to be the Green Man in the woodland area at Crich Tramway Museum. When my boys were younger, they loved going to find it."
What’s next for Ali and Herbert & Rose? "My cards are available in a few lovely shops in Derbyshire and Yorkshire and I hope to expand to more shops nationwide. I would also love to create an illustrated map of Chesterfield, but it might take me a while!" herbertandrose.co.uk @Herbert&Rose

S
40 and S41 Local magazines work hard to champion our fantastic local businesses. Many of these businesses have been hit hard by Covid-19, but probably none more so than our beloved museum and theatres. So to complement this months cover and support local venues we set about learning a little more about these wonderful buildings, what memories they carry and what the future holds.
The Winding Wheel First opened in 1923 as a picture house, The Winding Wheel is one of Chesterfield’s most prominent venues when it comes to functions. Inside the Grade 2 listed, tudor-style building you can see a plethora of events being held each week. From West End Musicals to stand-up comedy, and music concerts to community events, there is something here for everyone. The space inside is home to a stage bar and three regularly used rooms – the Auditorium, Function Room and Ballroom which boasts a beautiful stained-glass dome over the dance floor. Over the years it has brought us some of entertainments biggest names including The Proclaimers, Paddy McGuiness and Sir Bob Geldolf! The cinema closed in 1981 and, reopening in the 80s, The Winding Wheel has opened its doors to a wide variety of acts. Reasons to make a visit in the remainder of 2020 include popular tribute acts, comedians with household names, and some hidden gems of the UK music scene. • The Cavern Beatles (Tribute) - Thu 29 October • An Evening With Kevin & Joanne Clifton - Wed 11 November

Pomegranate Theatre A two-minute walk from the Winding Wheel is another of Chesterfield’s prestigious venues, The Pomegranate Theatre. Formerly the Stephenson Memorial Theatre and before this The Chesterfield Civic Centre, it recently celebrated its 70th birthday. In the 1950s you could find; Wilfred Brambell (Costar of Steptoe and Son), Donald Sutherland (from the Italian Job and The Hunger Games), Diana Rigg (The Avengers and ‘Olenna Tyrell’ in Game of Thrones) and in more recent history the Oscarwinning star Gary Oldman and Claire Sweeny from ‘Brookside’ (the TV series, not the area!). The theatre stages several live shows each year, along with satellite shows of the UKs most soughtafter performances and events. Here's a taste of some of the upcoming events. Chesterfield Museum Established in 1994, on St Mary’s Gate is the Chesterfield Museum. Here you'll discover the story of Chesterfield from its origins as a Roman stronghold, the creation of the Medieval Market, said to be over 600 years old, through to the Industrial Revolution and beyond! Built in 1879, as The Stephenson Memorial hall named after the father of the railways, George Stephenson, who spent much of his life in Chesterfield and is buried just up the road at The Holy Trinity Church on Newbold Road. Although, at the time of writing, the museum is closed, they are engaging us in local history with online sessions, on both their website and social media, you'll find the different ways they are keeping all ages both entertained and informed with activities to do at home such as: •
Dusting for fingerprints
•
The Tudors
• • • •
Vikings
Fantastic Fermentation Wartime recipes Local history
On their Facebook page you can find a ‘Building of the week’ quiz and old photos from around the town. Head on over to Chesterfield Borough Council’s Youtube Channel and you will see three virtual events on behalf of the museum. If that’s not enough then on the museum’s website you’ll find things to do at home, past exhibitions, highlights from the collection, and lots more! As the arts once again opens its doors and pulls back the curtain, it’s up to us as a town to ensure the comedians, actors, musicians and staff are met with big smiles and a full auditorium, albeit from a safe social distance. For further information on all three venues please head over to the web. Chesterfieldtheatre.co.uk Chesterfield.gov.uk/museum

Building Confidence Through Martial Arts Mind Body Spirit Martial Arts move to their new home on Barker Lane. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Mind Body Spirit

M
ind Body Spirit Martial Arts provide fun, exciting and rewarding traditional Martial Arts for children and adults in Chesterfield and have recently moved to a larger location on Barker Lane in Raincliffe House. They’ve now opened their doors to offer COVID secure classes, not only in the dōjō, but online too! Sensei Mike Holden has been a friend of ours for almost ten tears now. Our son and his friends joined Mind Body Spirit at the age of four and we’ve watched them progress to having achieved cadet black belt before deciding to quit Jujitsu to allow time for other activities. So, we have seen first-hand how Sensei Mike promotes a positive learning culture, and develops confident, resilient and courteous students in an excellent environment.
'They provide excellent tuition aimed at all abilities where all kids are treated as individuals. Mike and Kathy provide a safe, positive environment to their students.’ Katie, Toby's Mum. “I started martial arts when I stopped playing football due to too many injuries,” laughs Sensei Mike. “I was looking for a new activity and gave it a go. I wasn’t hooked at first but stuck with it. It was when I bought my uniform from Sugg Sport in Sheffield that I thought ‘this is it’. Jujitsu has since become a part of my life, given me friends across the world and enabled me to help some fantastic young and older people develop their skills, physical activity levels and self-confidence.”
Mind Body Spirit offer traditional martial arts through age specific classes from 4 years old, through the Warriors (age 4 to 7) foundation programme, the Young Masters (age 7 to 12) and adults’ classes, plus a 40 plus class for the more mature student. “The hardest part is to get people through the door,” explains Sensei Mike. “Once they get through the initial nerves, we help build confidence, learning self-defence, and improve people’s social skills, focus and concentration.” “People come along for different reasons, many simply want to learn the art of self-
defence, some lack confidence, focus and concentration, some parents have issues with bullying and want children to be involved in a physical activity.
“The benefits are many, self-discipline and structure. It’s the softer things, it’s not just about learning a martial art. Respect is so important throughout everything we teach, and it applies to all aspects; our structure, grading and award system, safe training environment, the standards we apply and it’s this detail that leads to a more positive outlook and its fun for all students,” says Sensei Mike.
Sensei Mike started training in 1987 and now holds the rank of Sichidan (7th Dan), due to his continued, loyal and dedicated service to the British Ju-Jitsu Association GB (BJJAGB). Sensei Mike’s rank is not all about technical ability but is also awarded for the work and support he has given as head of antidoping for governing body and his teachings through the UK and Europe. He started full time coaching in 2001, training in sports halls, leisure centres, village halls and community centres, but needed to make decision about his longterm future. Establishing the area's first full-time martial arts academy, he set up in Peel House, Brimington Road. A member of the British Jujitsu Association, he qualified as a level 4 coach in 2006, which is renewed every three years to ensure continued professional development.
In 2013 they moved premises to the Chesterfield FC Community Hub, (Sensei Mike is an avid Chesterfield FC fan) where they continued to develop the programmes and academy before moving to Barker Lane in March this year. “The new facility is much larger than our old space, we have conference facilities and have become one of four UK centres of excellence for the BJJAGB where we will be running coaching days for the East Midlands dōjōs.
“My team of coaches supporting me focus on what students can do rather than what they can’t and are amazingly enthusiastic about what they are doing.
“This is all great but our timing with COVID 19 could not have been worse; our opening date at Barker Lane was 23 March.
Please Mention S40 Local
Page 17
Business Intro “Surprisingly it’s been quite beneficial to us, as we have developed an online portal for members where we offer instructional videos, online bespoke classes, and since we reopened in July, we’ve live-streamed classes so people can follow them in their own home. “It’s been a really positive addition to the dōjō, but the services wouldn’t have been added without the push from lockdown,” explains Sensei Mike. “I’ve learned technologies I’ve been avoiding for years and they’ve enabled us to expand and develop our brand.”
At the dōjō they are running COVID-secure classes - non-contact, socially distanced, with full hygiene protocols in place. People are still returning, and class numbers are growing each week.
“We use throw down spots on mats to help visualise where students should be etc and we’ve had some great fun with children online creating their own grappling dummy, or if they have a sibling that attends, they can do the exercises together as a family,” adds Sensei Mike. If you’re looking for a way to improve yourself, physically and mentally, Mind Body Spirit might be just the thing you’re looking for, and if your children want to learn a martial art or develop, it’s a great place to start.
'Being involved with Mind Body Spirit is like being part of a family. It provides excellent grounding in discipline and respect. Mike’s a total legend who the kids admire and want to please.’ Kate, Connors Mum.
After spending seven years attending Mind Body Spirit with a group of close friends, I asked my son what he took away most from his time learning Jujitsu. ‘A six pack’ was his response, but as his parent I know he got so much more – we have witnessed Sensei Mike engage, encourage and develop the kids he teaches, and the way he quietly and sensitively deals with challenging behaviours and builds selfconfidence. I suspect we also have Sensei Mike to thanks for his core strength and confidence that have helped him in his new activities and the way he has accepted exercise as an everyday necessity. Thanks Sensei Mike.

Celebrate
Derbyshire Day 22 September 2020 Words & Images: Howard Borrell (Pictured)
Local councillor Howard Borrell is leading the charge on Derbyshire Day celebrations - after all, we have so much to celebrate! Derbyshire Day has been around since 2006 when Radio Derby decided that Derbyshire needed a day to celebrate what makes it special - just like many other counties have done for many years (Yorkshire Day was created in 1975). They settled on the flag (above) and the date 22 September after the two were chosen by listeners in a vote. The flag will hopefully be flying above the town hall on the day. Since then it's only really had any presence in the south of the county and, even then, only when Radio Derby had the resource to organise events.
hope that the idea catches on and becomes a fixture in the calendar as we celebrate how fortunate we are to live in what, I'm sure many of us believe to be, the most beautiful county in the country. You may wish to celebrate the day as a family or with friends (suitably social distanced, of course) but if you choose to eat at home why not, at least, support some of our wonderful local food producers and maybe end with a beer, wine or gin also produced in Derbyshire? If you are one of those producers, why not use the day as an opportunity to promote the huge range of quality products on offer?
For a long time, I've felt it odd that there has been no promotion in our "neck of the woods" and decided to try and find out a little more. A few emails eventually triggered contact from Radio Derby, who confirmed that the date is fixed but celebrations were sometimes held on the nearest Sunday to gain a bigger audience and there was nothing to stop other parts of the county participating.
So, let's make 2020 the year when we launch Derbyshire Day in the north of the county. So many activities and events have had to be cancelled this year that it seems too good an opportunity to waste. Already several organisations have expressed an interest - for instance, both Casa and Peak Edge restaurants will be producing a menu on the day that uses solely Derbyshire produce, Brampton Brewery and Brampton Manor will also be participating, and Brimming with Beer at Brimington intends to celebrate the day by highlighting Derbyshire brews.
Of course, major events may occur in the future but they're never going to feature during a pandemic. Let's start small, sow the seeds and Page 20

Out & About
Derbyshire's Best Five great days out across our county Words & Images: Molly Scott
W
ith movement still restricted and indoor meet ups limited to a few individuals Molly Scott has highlighted a few of our local outdoor spaces that enable us to visit and stay safe.
Chatsworth House Chatsworth is undoubtedly Derbyshire’s finest country house. Jane Austen is believed to have based her idea of Pemberley on Chatsworth House. More recently, it has featured in the cult classic Peaky Blinders.
Chatsworth has extensive, exquisite interiors; breathtakingly beautiful all year round, but something truly magical when the house is dressed for Christmas. The 105-acre gardens are equally impressive. Famous for their rich history, there is something for everyone. On a sunny day, grown-ups and children alike enjoy paddling in the Cascade, so don’t forget to pack a towel. Families with younger children would enjoy the farmyard with animal handling and milking demonstrations, and large woodland playground with rope park, trampoline, slides and water and sand play.
Take a picnic or enjoy the range of catering facilities at Chatsworth. The Carriage House is ideal for families and serves freshly made, seasonal dishes using local ingredients in a canteen style. For a more refined experience, The Flying Childers restaurant offers the ultimate English indulgence – a luxurious afternoon tea served on Wedgewood china. Be aware that currently all tickets must be pre-booked, check out the website for details. chatsworth.org
Calke Abbey Derbyshire is blessed with several magnificent National Trust properties, but Calke Abbey has something for everyone and is probably the most family-friendly. Page 22
Prior to arriving at the main car park, turn right when signposted for ‘Calke Explore’, a new outdoor recreation area. After you’ve explored there you can drive (or take a 15-minute walk) up to the main car park for the house.
You can picnic throughout the grounds at Calke Abbey - but one insider tip is to park in the overflow car park facing the parkland to enjoy your own idyllic little spot (and save you lugging the food around with you all day). As a family, we love exploring the extensive parkland, but you can visit the house if you wish. The walled garden features an array of beautifully maintained flowers. Interiors fans will swoon with delight at the faded beauty of The Orangery.
There’s a good adventure playground for younger children right near the main car park (although this is currently shut), which is also close to the toilets and café. Children will also enjoy exploring the long tunnel and the ice bunker! All visitors must pre-book tickets, which are released every Friday night for the week ahead. Social distancing measures are in place and I felt really safe here. nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey/whats-on
Matlock Bath Matlock Bath is the closest to a seaside resort you’ll find in Derbyshire, with fish and chips, amusement arcades and local, independent cafes and pubs.
If you can find a spot, parking at the station is a good base to explore. Start with a coffee or a gluttonous freakshake at F’Coffee then cross the road and the river using the bridge opposite. You can then have a very pleasant, fairly shaded walk along the river which takes you past a playground. Cross back over the river at the next bridge you come to and then meander back up the main drag of Matlock Bath. Highlights include the fishpond (the actual pond containing huge ornate fish, and the pub of the same name - check out their
www.s40local.co.uk
beer garden to the rear to the pub), an aquarium, arcades and lots of souvenir shops. Remember, it’s pretty much obligatory to have fish and chips. You are at the faux seaside after all!
If you’re in need of further entertainment, The Heights of Abraham has cable cars affording magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Or, for something free, we like Matlock Meadows, a small, working farm with free children’s playground when you use their café or buy some of their handmade ice cream.
Bakewell The pretty market town of Bakewell is rumoured to be where Jane Austen wrote and based Pride and Prejudice, whilst staying at The Rutland Arms. If you’re feeling similarly romantically inclined, visit Weir Bridge to see the love locks left by starry eyed lovers. Please do consider the environmental impact before adding your own, sorry to be a killjoy!
Otherwise, feed the ducks during a riverside stroll. Mooch around the local shops and then take home a Bakewell pudding from one of the numerous bakeries or cafes. The hot new place for coffee is at Coffee by Lovage, the side hustle of chef Lee Smith, who has recently set up a fine dining restaurant of the same name.
Dovedale (and a quieter alternative) Dovedale stepping-stones is an iconic Derbyshire spot - which also makes it really popular. To enjoy this site without the crowds you really need to get here very early, pick a random weekday, a day with less favourable weather - or ideally all three! Hathersage stepping-stones are equally pretty but much more of a hidden gem. You can even have a paddle a little further downstream. For details of where to park and directions for an easy walk see: peakdistrictkids.co.uk/hathersage-stepping-stones

Write the life story you want
M
ost of us have an idea of how we’d like our life to go and where we’d like to be in the future. The question is: will you always have the money you need to live the life you’d like?
As soon as you begin your working career, you start to accumulate wealth. So, if you want to write a good life story, it’s imperative that you protect your wealth as soon as you can. It is possible to write the life story you want, and it starts with something called ‘wealth planning’. Here at Jones & Co, we work with people of all ages and backgrounds to protect and enhance their wealth. It’s all about enhancing your current financial situation and that begins by knowing what your short, medium and long-term goals are. What are your specific aspirations? Where are you going, and what does it take to get there, financially speaking?
You’ll then need to use your accumulated wealth to support you for the rest of your life and, hopefully, have a lump sum to ultimately pass on to your loved ones.
Irrespective of your age or personal circumstances, it’s our job to ensure that your wealth works as hard as it can, it is protected and preserved. With professional advice, all of this and more can be achieved. Please don’t think you can’t afford to work with an independent financial advisor either. You can and it could be the best money you will ever spend. Afterall, writing the life story you want is priceless.
Once we understand your personal circumstances and agree your goals, we ask clients to complete a risk profile questionnaire and we then look at what you’re currently saving and/or investing every month. We also take into account any employer’s pension you may have and ascertain if it’s actually working for you. We always look at the whole picture, this is so important. With all this information to hand, we will advise and create a bespoke wealth planning strategy that could encompass a wide variety of financial products and services from a private pension and investment plan, to income protection and life insurance. No two wealth planning strategies are the same because we’re all different.
Our objective is to grow your assets so that you are able to provide for your own future and that of future generations if you have children and family. If you’re in your 20s, you might just be stepping on the career ladder and hoping your income will rise over the years. You may be in your 30s and wanting to start a family, buy your own home or both.
Or perhaps you’re in your 40s or 50s and your children are heading to university and you’d like to pay off your mortgage and retire soon. Either way, as every week goes by, you’re accumulating wealth, and you may even inherit money one day. There will always come a point, however, when you stop work and move into retirement.

Conservatory or Orangery? The Window People have answer
Our most frequently asked question is: ‘What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?' Well, an orangery is a cross between an extension and a conservatory. It has a brick base, solid pillars, large windows, and a partially glazed roof. They feel very much like an extra room integrated into the house with fantastic space and light! Conservatory or Orangery Extending the size of your home with a conservatory or an orangery gives you that extra space to relax in day or night and can add significant value to your home. But which one is right for you? Orangeries Orangeries date back as far as the 15th Century. Originating (no pun intended) from the renaissance gardens of Italy, when
Page 26
technology had progressed enough to produce large sheets of glass.
Used to grow citrus fruits (hence the name) and house trees and plants in the colder winter months. The Dutch led the way in Northern Europe by building them on residential properties as fashionable green houses, a sign of wealth and prosperity.
Orangeries can easily be adapted to fit the space available. If you are looking to extend your kitchen, dining or living room then an orangery is the way to go. We recommend a sliding bi-fold door with a flush finish to the garden patio, perfect for those who enjoy being outdoors in the summer, come rain or shine. Whether you have a lot or a little space, a square or a rectangular space, The Window People are on hand with no obligation expert advice.

Conservatories Conservatories came along in the early 16th century. Like orangeries they were used by wealthy landowners in the Mediterranean to grow and cultivate a variety of fruits, plants, and small trees. Coming to our shores in the 18th Century, Kew Gardens in London is a world-famous and beautiful example of a greenhouse conservatory, so big it not only houses plants and trees, but supports a variety of wildlife as well.
Modern conservatories come in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. If your aim is to make the most of your space, with its elegant lines, then a square or rectangular Georgian may be the one for you. Its high sloping glazed roof floods it with light making it an uplifting, mood enhancing place to relax and unwind. The aptly named P-Shape conservatory can be installed on a single storey extension as well as a bungalow. Combing an Edwardian roof with either a lean to or double hinged, ensures its versatility. T-Shape conservatories are hugely popular adding beauty and statement to any property. Like the P-Shape they get their name from there appearance and can be installed on single storey properties.
If you are seeking something a little more classical and subtle you may opt for a striking Victorian or a dignified Gable. The Victorian is the most popular conservatory in the UK. It compliments all styles of homes from new builds to period properties. The most popular has five facets, a bay front and five main windows at wide angles. The Gable conservatories roof is the same style as a traditional house with two sloping sides. The body is either square or rectangular and has a very regal feel to it. Expert advice There are a plethora of options available to you when it comes to conservatories and orangeries. The Window People have a wealth of experience and can give expert advice so you can find the right style, shape and size to fit your needs, with an almost endless selection of customisable windows, bricks and roofs. Call The Window People today for a free, no obligation quote and you could extend your home in time for Christmas with your dream orangery or conservatory, or add new life to your existing one.

Economy
Support Local Words: Paul Chapman Image: Totallylocally
C
ovid-19 has inevitably had an impact on our shopping habits - be that short term or long term, and the difficulties for town centres has been making headline news, as the number people working at home reduces the number of shoppers.
economy if each adult in Chesterfield spent just £5 with an independent and not a major retailer or chain store each week.
So, perhaps it's time we asked ourselves what we can do about it... we might not be budding shopkeepers keen to open up a cool new business, BUT we are all consumers who can make choices and purchasing decisions everyday.
Totally Locally, I’ve mentioned them before, are doing some amazing work to help independent businesses thrive, to help support towns and to encourage us to set up new initiatives, like National Fiver Fest where they ask independent businesses to set up deals for a fiver to encourage new customers across the threshold. At the moment, they are assessing dates for the next Fiver Fest, and I’ve set up a FB group Totallylocallychesterfield where I’m hoping independent businesses can talk to each other, share problems and concerns, and help cross-promote each other.
Chesterfield Town Centre appears to be coping fairly well, although we've seen a number of retail casualties in recent months. I suspect what we all want to see is a thriving high street of interesting, useful, practical shops run by friendly and cheerful local people - and occasionally we bemoan the fact that it's not as fabulous as we'd like!
Many of us are now working at home? No need to drive to an office, so we've got some extra time to play with. Don’t sacrifice it by doing extra work, take a lunch, slam the laptop shut and get out as often as you can and meet the people making a living by operating fabulous shops, cafes, market stalls and restaurants in our area. Some fruit and veg from the market, or a pie for tea from a butchers perhaps … these are just suggestions there are plenty of other options!
‘The new normal’ - Perhaps IT IS NOT ten hours sat at the desk with a constant stream of interruptions as deliveries arrive at the door. IT IS the same eight hours at work but with an hour out and about picking up the days essentials, a great way to deal with the stress levels! The location for the job might have moved but the stress is still there, I bet. I’ve talked before about the benefits to the immediate economy by spending money locally. £20.4 million directly into the local Page 28
To quote Adam at Adam’s Happy Hens, when we walked up recently to pick up some food, we chatted as we do (another of the beauties of independents - you create a relationship and get to interact and socialise), and he mentioned how things work. “You buy from me and support our business, so I have an advert with you and support yours,” says Adam. That sums things up nicely for me, the money we spend is simply moving around the local economy, not siphoned away to make the rich richer.
I’ve also met with a small group of Chesterfield Champions, where we discussed our view on why people don’t come into the town centre as often as they could and things we’d like to see to change, to widen the appeal and to increase footfall. I’ll share the outcomes of this when the time is right. So, if you do one thing differently, could it be shop in town or your local shops? Give it a try, there’s a whole bunch of business owners who’d love to see you.

Mario Would Love It
Darwin & Bear combines 80s gaming and Mexican food ... and we love it! Words: Simon Paterson Images: Darwin & Bear
M
any of us will remember the 1980s for its questionable outfits, haircuts and pop music. From Flock of Seagulls to Nick Kershaw, and shell suits to perms, it was a decade which pushed boundaries not only in pop culture, but in technology as well. It was the decade home consoles became a must-have. Fast-forward 35 years and you’d be hard pushed to find a UK household without a console, PC, or iPad. We have become a nation of gamers. From Nannas playing Wordscape and Candy Crush on their phones, to kids using VR headsets in their bedrooms, gaming is here to stay.
But what about those games we played as kids on the old consoles such as Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter 2 and Tetris? For many years these have been lost to the archives, never to be enjoyed again. Well, that’s what we thought, cue Darwin and Bear.
Darwin and Bear are the 'New Kids On The Block', bringing the old school back! They are Chesterfield’s first, and only, gaming restaurant and bar! Scrabble, Monopoly, Nintendo Entertainment system, Sega Mega Drive, PlayStation - you name it, they’ve got it. Darwin and Bear is the brainchild of Ben Kirby, a passionate gamer who wanted to share his enthusiasm for video and board games with the residents of Chesterfield. With over 20 years’ experience running bars and nightclubs, it made perfect sense for Ben to combine the two. But Ben didn’t embark on this adventure alone, this is a multiplayer game! Page 32
www.s40local.co.uk
No stranger to a PlayStation herself, Antonia joined Ben on this exciting adventure. With over eight years’ experience in the hospitality industry and an eye for detail, Antonia is responsible for most of Darwin and Bears interior design.
The bar has wooden gaming booths with built in screens, with a variety of consoles to choose from. Whether you were a Sega, Nintendo or PlayStation person, Darwin and Bear have the booth for you. At the side of the bar you will find a stack of board games and upstairs there is an American pool table. It’s the perfect place to meet friends, go on a first date, or bring the kids to show off your skills, whilst enjoying some great food and a relaxing drink. If you’re lucky you may even win a game! Darwin and Bear have a tasty and varied menu. We asked Ben and Antonia what their favourite dishes are:
"Chesterfield is a great fit for what we wanted to do. There is nothing else quite like Darwin and Bear in Chesterfield, we are quite unique. Chesterfield has a great mix of old and new, from the market, which I love, to the new independent shops such as Shop Indie. It’s cool and we love it here. Our town centre location on Glumangate is just off the main strip, meaning it’s easily accessible but quiet as well, perfect," says Antonia. Ben and Antonia have big plans for the business (post covid), from gaming competitions to speed dating and board game nights. Darwin and Bear is a most welcome addition to Chesterfield town centre and another great reason to visit the high street. So, warm up those thumbs and visit Darwin and Bear today.
"I’m leaning towards the chicken fajitas. I’ve always been a fan of Mexican food and we do a mean fajita! Washed down with one of our fruity cocktails, of course," recommends Antonia. "My favourite dish must be the deep-fried beef chimichanga, with a Brewdog IPA. So glad we put it on the menu. I probably eat far too many, if I’m honest", exclaims Ben.
Ben and Antonia moved to Chesterfield from Derby and love it here.

Cooking Up A Storm With Richard and Laura from Quarantine Cuisine. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Quarantine Cuisine
R
ichard and Laura Alsop are Edge Events and the husband and wife team behind the Facebook group, ‘Edge Events presents Quarantine Cuisine’. They are behind some of Chesterfield’s key events, including the Street Food and Grooves and the Chesterfield Food and Drink Festivals, and are on a mission to bring the flavours of the world to Chesterfield during lockdown and beyond.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, they’ve had no choice but to postpone most of this year’s events! However, being the entrepreneurial duo they are, they had an idea. A great idea! "When we announced that all our summer outdoor events were postponed until next year, we were overwhelmed by the sympathy we received," says Richard.
"In response, we came up with ‘Quarantine Cuisine’, a thanks for everyone's support over the years, and a way to bring together the community through food. "We created a community platform via a Facebook group page, enabling people to share their ‘food & drink’ related photos, recipes and we provided step by step instructions for people to replicate in their own homes. The group welcomes food from all around the world and we also ask people to share their favourite tipple to wash it down with. It’s a fun idea and has offered a tiny bit of distraction during these tricky times, a chance to dance around your kitchen having a few drinks at the same time… or is it just me? "We reached over 1000 group members in a week which we were really chuffed with, and today we have in excess of 2000 members," says Richard.
"There are so many tasty dishes, and what we want to offer is a non-judgemental page where everyone can share. There are chefs in the group, people who have less experience and some have just started cooking. The page offers so many different cooking styles, food groups, meat, seafood, vegetarian and vegan, there really is something to match all palates and abilities." "When the group started during lockdown, access to many ingredients was difficult, but as restrictions lifted it's easier to shop. However, we always encourage the use of local independent suppliers and businesses as the first point of call for ingredients!
"We have been sourcing ingredients, whether it’s fresh meat and veg or ground spices for a curry, from local businesses wherever we can, calling them or visiting their Facebook pages to order.
"It’s important to learn what each supplier stocks so you can build up a virtual shopping list of local produce. We are trying our hardest to spread the spend and to continue supporting these suppliers as people drift back to the supermarkets. "We really must pass on our thanks to many of the suppliers who have helped by delivering items to us, some have even delivered the food within an hour, which we couldn’t believe! Communication is the best way to work with other businesses and to source the ingredients," enthuses Richard.
"The book will also be donating a percentage of each sale to desperately needed funds for Ashgate Hospicecare" It wasn’t long before Richard and Laura’s driveway was home to their first ‘cook-along session’, launched on Saturday 9 May. The first session featured Edge Events, it was relaxed, informal and a lot slower than what the professionals cook! "It was great fun! It was a first for us, but we did manage to create a tasty dish at the end", laughs Richard.
To accompany the Facebook group and make the recipes available to a wider audience, Edge Events have partnered with Bannister Publications to produce a cookbook using the recipes submitted to them. "We’re almost there! We’ve had some fantastic, mouth-watering recipes and images so far," Richard says excitedly. "We’re hoping people who submitted recipes will purchase a copy to see their work in print and will take away a little positivity from what is still a very difficult time for us all to navigate. We’re hoping to have the book available before Christmas so we can promise a great stocking-filler!" "We will also be donating a percentage of each sale to provide desperately needed funds for Ashgate Hospicecare", adds Richard.

Dream Walker
elf-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are phrases used a lot these days, but how successfully we apply them to our own lives varies greatly. When Jenny Exford achieved her goal of making Regional Manager for a large retail chain before her 35th birthday, hers all but disappeared.
Words: Annie Littlewood Photo: Jenny Exford
“I thought my job defined me. As I drove up and down the country, taking on bigger and bigger roles, I measured my value by my professional performance. I missed family gatherings and holidays because I was too busy with work to attend.”
Jenny began to re-evaluate her priorities and realised that the two were not compatible. “I could either be a corporate success or the person I wanted to be. I was never going to find my happiness working constantly.” Jenny’s first love had always been animals, and so, with the support of her fiancé, she quit her job and fulfilled her passion, caring for horses. This change in lifestyle also gave her more time to spend with her dogs, Martha and Jasmine. The stables she worked for were impressed with her animal-handling skills and trusted her implicitly. When they asked her to take on the additional role of walking their dogs for them, Jenny realised this could be another way of supporting herself.
“I had never thought that these things could be revenue streams for me. They were things I did for pleasure. Getting paid to do tasks I enjoyed was a revelation.”

Happy Paws was established and, based in Holymoorside, Jenny now covers the Chesterfield area. She is fully insured and has the knowledge and experience to take on any dog. Her confidence with animals is immediately apparent, as is her love for them.
“I really am living my own dream now,” beams Jenny. “I like who I am better, I have softened, and my change in career allows me to focus on the things I truly care about.”

You may have heard about ... The government’s National Tutoring Programme (NTP) which is a £1 billion coronavirus catch up package for children whose education has been most affected by the long school closures. Many parents with eligible children have not! The package is designed to allow Tuition Partners to work with small groups of children or on a one to one basis to boost their progress significantly. This is based on high quality evidence from randomised controlled trials by the Education Endowment Foundation and is designed to supplement the quality classroom teaching as a powerful tool for schools after such an unprecedented difficult time. It has been proven that the more disadvantaged children will require additional tutoring and support to shore up their lack of progress during the closures. The Government has established the NTP to be accessed by schools for their pupils as the best way to make sure tutoring is effective and linked to what pupils are learning in school. So, where does Jo at Kip fit in? Jo was approached by a large local academy which manages many schools and who wanted to take advantage of the NTP scheme. Kip meets all the criteria for being a Tutoring Partner because it employs only qualified teachers, can assess and measure the academic level of a student at the beginning and end of the tutoring programme and demonstrate in detailed terms the actual measurable progress that has been made. It is acknowledged as a safe guarding organisation and mirrors the school curriculums. The academy asked Jo to provide tuition for around 100 students from its schools during the summer and looks set to continue the extra support provision going forward. The tutoring is funded by the NTP government scheme making it available for parents who would not normally be in a position to access private tuition for their child. Each child has a customised personal programme to address their specific educational needs and is part computer based and part tutor led. Kip offers places in small groups thus ensuring each child has maximum tutor interaction without being overlooked throughout the session. It can accommodate family or small group ‘bubbles’ in compliance with the Covid 19 regulations. Access to the scheme is only through your child’s school if they are participating in the NTP scheme. The school is in the best position to know you, your child and their education levels to make these decisions and if you want to know more you can ask them yourself or look on the website for more information www.nationaltutoring.org.uk/faqs Hope this has been helpful but whether you can access the tutoring via NTP or not, Jo continues to offer her own assessments and tailor-made plans. Call Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611.

Dr. Bike in Lockdown Words & Image: Alastair Meikle
T
he fantastic weather of March and April weeks has now gone, and having breakfast before our first Dr Bike workshop of the year due to Covid-19, its pouring with rain!
We need to get to our storage containers where we hold our workshops early, because to aid social distancing, we’ve set up a booking system with twenty appointments and they all went within 48 hours! As I get my bike out to cycle down, the rain stops thank goodness and I’m first of the three volunteer mechanics to arrive. Tasks on arrival;
• Get the donated bikes out and on display, they are available for anyone and we just ask for a donation. • Get the gazebo out and ready to put up when the others arrive. • Tool kits sorted and ready. • Workstands out.
Soon the others arrive, and we get the gazebo up, we’ve worked out a plan so that we can social distance and each of us still have access to the stock of spares and more specialised tools. An addition is a bowl and soap, and one of the mechanics has brought hot water for us to wash with - luxury!
It's 9.30am and our first appointments start to arrive. For the next four and a half hours, we three are constantly busy and we have another helper who chats to people when they arrive to ‘triage’ their bikes. It's mainly fairly basic stuff - adjusting gears and brakes, occasionally replacing cables and brake blocks. Sometimes a more extensive repair is needed, which we will do if we have the parts, but more likely our mechanic who runs his own repair business will give a quote.
up, we have a few people come to look at the bikes we have available. Despite quite a bit of interest on Facebook, only one is taken on the day - although one lady swaps her bike for one of ours and a couple of days later another person who couldn’t get there asks for a bike. As often happens just before we are scheduled to finish at 1pm several people arrive with bikes that need a lot of work and we finally finish just after 2pm after twenty-eight bikes have been checked, adjusted and repaired! Then we pack everything away, lock up, and go back home. We’ll be back next month.
Dr Bike in Chesterfield has been running for three years now with eight workshops per year, the smallest number of bikes we’ve had on a very wet day was twelve and we regularly see twenty plus. We all really enjoy it and it serves a real need for those who probably don’t consider themselves as ‘cyclists’, they just use a bike to get around. Chesterfield’s free Dr. Bike surgeries take place in Queens' Park, Chesterfield on the first Saturday of each month between 9:30am and 2pm, the last two of the year take place on Saturdays October 3rd and November 7th.
There's a couple of no shows from our list of bookings, which is disappointing, but find out later that a chain snapped on one bike on the way down, we sort him out a few days later! If only bike owners would use a few drops of oil on their cables! Most of the problems we see, especially with gears are corroded cables not moving easily through the outer cable.
As well as the repairs both booked and just turning Page 40

Garden Tips
Autumn Garden Tips
I
f you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.
When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all Words: Inspire Community Garden the hybrids some shaping while Picture: Robert Nixon Betts they are dormant. Remember that many of these appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants. When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.
Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes), they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really
have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few).
It is time to think about ordering new fruit trees and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm.
Keep on top of tidying jobs but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.
Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

Dave Hemingway, founder member of The Beautiful South releases his debut album with his new band Sunbirds. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy with guitarist, songwriter and collaborator Phil Barton, with Cool To Be Kind signalling the arrival of the new band, new songs and a new sound.
The music Sunbirds make takes on board all of the bands and artists Dave and Phil have loved over the years. It chiefly blends the musical instruments of rural America with an occasional twist of grungy guitars and sets them against lyrics that remain very much at home in the towns and cities of England. "Although a lot of the songs have a Country feel," says Dave "they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire." The formation of Sunbirds also sees the introduction of new discovery Laura Wilcockson on vocals and violin. Laura comes from a classical/orchestral, as well as folk, background. If you’re lucky, you might spot her busking around Mansfield. Completing the line-up is legendary UK session drummer, Marc Parnell, who has toured with Joan Armatrading, The Blockheads and Jethro Tull, to name but three. Marc can be heard on recordings by Girls Aloud, Pet Shop Boys and Gabriella Cilmi's hit single ‘Sweet About Me’. Cool To Be Kind is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary Name:
themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. "There’s no exact science here," says Phil. "We’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want, whether it’s about love, greed, social isolation or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts."

Music
S40 Time
New to Youtube and championing Chesterfield's music scene, past and present. Words: Simon Paterson Image: S40time
S
40time (pronounced "Showtime") is a new Youtube channel/podcast celebrating the music, arts and culture of Chesterfield, Derbyshire and The Peak District. It's the brainchild of singer/songwriter Aaron Brown - formerly of legendary Chesterfield bands The Dazy Age and The Chasers, who now sings with The WonderWhys, who've twice played The Ally Pally to over 6,000 in London, recorded with Arctic Monkeys' producer Alan Smyth and supported The Happy Mondays when they came to Town in December 2018!
The pilot episode, aired in June, saw Aaron interview his first guest, David McPhie, taking him back to the very place where he recorded Joe Cocker's demo reel on Chatsworth Road (his old flat, but now Palfreyman's Music Shop), which secured him his record deal in 1967 and shot Joe to stardom. With over 15,000 views at the time of going to print, Aaron’s debut is proving rather popular. David McPhie also championed the music scene in Chesterfield in the 60's and 70's by bringing world class acts like Pink Floyd, Free, Bill Haley, Fleetwood Mac, Little Richard and Jethro Tull to town. As well as running his own vinyl shop, 'Some Kinda Mushroom', he somehow found time to manage seminal Chesterfield band, Shape of the Rain. David will have his own future episodes on S40time - interviewing some of the most prominent musicians and figures from the town's past, and featuring local jazz pioneers Al Needham and Denny Lawson have already been recorded over the summer, along with Jonathan Rowlands - who managed Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck, and now runs Bakewell Music Festival. He also sat down with John Cuttriss - who wrote a book about the Carlton Club down on Whittington Moor in the 60s.
Aaron, however, will stick to what's happening in the here and now, and the first episode to air sees him in conversation with Chesterfield film-maker, Kai Undrell, whose film 'Stand Up' is available on Amazon Prime. Infectious Matlock dance outfit Patawa is the following show, where singer Sam Wilmot joins Aaron ahead of their imminent album release to talk about their recent session on Tom Robinson's show on 6 Music and Radio 1, as well as a tour of Japan. In the pipeline are interviews with Stevo, of the area's best-known live music venue - Realtime Music; Liam Walker, who appeared on The Voice last year; and Trash's, Daniel Longmore. Having earned a regular prime slot at Elastic FM, the region's latest and growing FM station, Aaron will also be previewing all his guests for S40time on there, as well as here (S40 and S41 Local magazines), and hopes S40time can provide a much-needed boost to musicians and artists who are especially struggling at this time. With a presence on all major platforms including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, S40time promises to bring Chesterfield and Derbyshire up to date by delivering a slick digital experience, showcasing even more reasons to be proud of our town.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted. Live theatre returns to Chesterfield Chesterfield Borough Council is pleased to announce that Chesterfield Theatres will again be hosting live performances from October. The first three live shows scheduled to take place are part of the Autumn Play Season, which takes place from Tuesday 13 October until Saturday 14 November at the Pomegranate Theatre. Customers will be able to purchase tickets to all three plays for the price of two. The tickets will go on sale from Friday 4 September.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The return of live performances to the council’s theatres represents another step forward in Chesterfield’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. “I know the team have worked hard to make this possible and we very much look forward to welcoming our regular theatregoers as well as lots of new customers to our Covid-19 secure theatres.”
The three plays for the Autumn Play Season are Love Upon The Throne, Dead Certain and Live Bed Show. Each play will feature two different performers, drawn from the same social bubble, in order to help limit contact with other performers and audiences.
The Pomegranate Theatre is already open for cinema screenings and council staff have received lots of positive comments from customers about the safety measures that have been put in place.
The council has also followed the latest Government and UK Theatres guidance on how to re-introduce live performances to ensure the safety of performers, theatre goers and staff. Tickets for the first three live shows and for other live performances as well as tickets for cinema screenings can be booked on the Chesterfield Theatres website.
When booking tickets online, customers can also spoil themselves by pre-ordering tasty treats including ice creams, sweets and drinks at a reduced price. Snacks and drinks can also be purchased when attending the Theatres, but staff will only be accepting card payments.
The Theatres team are looking forward to welcoming you back and are grateful for the messages of support that they have received from theatre goers through this difficult period.

News
Scooby Doo Where Are You? News I'm running the length of Chesterfield Canal twice in a day! David Smith has run the full length of the Chesterfield Canal and back in a day, the equivalent of 3½ marathons.
He did it to raise money for the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s 2027 Appeal. Just to make it more interesting, he was dressed as Scooby Doo! David is a Life Member of the Trust, he is also a pharmacist and having done a morning’s work, he left Chesterfield at 2:40pm on Saturday 29 August. He ran all 46 miles to West Stockwith on the River Trent, arriving just after 1am, he then turned around and ran straight back to Chesterfield, arriving back at 1:46pm.
He covered 94.7 miles in 23 hours and 6 minutes, burnt 8,657 calories and took 185,367 steps!
David said: “Huge thank you to everyone who has donated. It really helped when I was tired, in pain and struggling to keep going, that the run was making a difference. I had a great time despite bramble hacking through Renishaw, crawling under fallen trees at Kiveton Park, tripping in the dark at Retford, getting lost at Drakeholes and having constant wet feet thanks to the rain. But it was so worth it! We have a great canal and it needs restoring and maintaining so everyone can enjoy its delights for many years to come.”
Pictures: Above - Dave and his wife Ann, Middle - At the start and Below - Collecting on route, I'm amazed he carried that bucket all the way!
If you're quick, it's still possible to donate to David’s crowdfunder page which will be open until 25 September. Just search for Chesterfield Canal Trust and follow the links or go to:
bit.ly/92canal
David is no stranger to raising money for good causes, but this year all the usual public marathons and half marathons have been cancelled. He often does training runs along the canal, so he decided upon this new challenge. The Trust’s stated aim is to complete the restoration of the Chesterfield Canal by 2027, which is the 250th anniversary of its opening.
Originally 20 miles of the canal from Worksop to Chesterfield lay derelict, but 12 miles have already been restored along with 11 bridges, 37 locks and 2 marinas. Some of the work has been done by the Trust’s volunteers, including restoring four locks and building two new ones. There remains just over 8 miles of restoration still to be completed. Just over 1½ miles of this is covered by the planning application that the Trust has recently submitted to Chesterfield Borough Council. Page 54
