Hi
I hope our November edition finds you well.
We've a packed edition, which I hope you enjoy.
This year we're getting behind the Totally Locally, Fiver Fest celebration, with £5 offers put on by our local independent businesses until the 24 October, please, please get out and support the businesses. We also have our first part of our Christmas Gift Guide encouraging you to buy your Christmas gifts from local independents.
Thanks to John Smith for pointing out a slight error in the last edition. The theatre started as the Stephenson Memorial Hall in 1879, later becoming Chesterfield Civic Theatre (the first municipal theatre in the country) before being renamed the Pomegranate Theatre. It was built in 1879 but as far as we know, has never been the Chesterfield Civic Centre. Apologies for any confusion caused.
I cycled past the theatres and the railway station car park a couple of times last week and was shocked at it being almost empty, reminding me how few people are travelling and are now working from home instead. If you can, please try to get out during the day for lunch perhaps and use our fab local businesses - in a safe, respectful and COVID secure way.
Please also support us and mention S40 Local when you do contact our advertisers - it makes a real difference, encourages people to advertise and keeps the magazine going. Stay safe and see you again for our Christmas editoin! Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

FIVER FEST: 10 to 24 October Independent businesses coming together to highlight their contribution to the great British high street and Chesterfield is taking part. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Totallylocally
T
o demonstrate the importance of supporting our high streets, Chesterfield is joining with over 100 Independent High Streets across the UK, to put on special £5 offers across two weeks in October, in the TOTALLY LOCALLY FIVER FEST.
£5 massages, £5 local meat packs, £5 best-selling book offers, £5 lunch deals and even axe-throwing for a fiver!
FIVER FEST is a free to join campaign, devised and run by Totally Locally, a grass roots High Street organisation that has been helping businesses and High Streets to help themselves since 2010 with incredible results.
YouGov research has shown that 59% of shoppers have used more local shops to support them during lockdown, so let's continue that support.
Independent shops and businesses make our town special and unique. Businesses appreciate it when we support them, and these offers are to say thank you for that support, showing just what great value local businesses are.”
“We know Fiver Fest isn’t going to change the world”, said Chris Sands of Totally Locally, “But small changes in spending habits can really make a difference to our high streets. By diverting £5 of our weekly spend to local independents we give them a fighting chance to thrive. It’s an action worth taking!”.
This Fiver Fest, Totally Locally is calling on consumers to divert £5 of their weekly spend to support the small businesses in their communities.
At the time of going to print, many people were still thinking about their Fiver Fest offers but those I do know of are shown opposite. Please look out for Fiver Fest posters between the 10th and 24th October.
Fiver Fest is based around the Totally Locally £5 message:
“If every adult in Chesterfield spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £20.4 million per year going directly into our local economy. Which can lead to more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy & a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn’t it?!”
Spending just £5 a week with a local independent makes a big difference to our High Street, and “Fiver Fest” promotes this message.
In 2019, 43 towns joined in and the result was phenomenal with reports of new customers, people rediscovering shops they hadn’t been into for years, and huge sales of £5 offers. Over the two consecutive Fiver Fests, the number of towns taking part has now reached over 100.
Fiver Fest Offers are often imaginative and varied; Page 4
Even if you don't see a poster, you can still show your support by trying out a new independent business and spending a fiver (or more) with them. Happy shopping.
Call for Help! In Chesterfield we've been talking about Totally Locally now for a while... and it's been a slow build, as no-one seems to have any time or energy to really drive it! If you are local, looking for a voluntary role, know about social media and are not connected to the council - a recommendation from Totally Locally towns that have been successful, please get in touch. I'd love to speak to you about how, together, we can make this bigger and better!

very year Christmas comes along. To some it's a surprise on Christmas Eve, whilst others have been planning for months, compiling lists, seeking out gifts and writing to Santa. We've put together some suggestions, from our local businesses, which will satisfy the pickiest of recipients. We've also tried to be a bit kind to the planet; some are made locally, support the local economy, are experiences so leave little behind, are antiques (recycling at its best) or simply quality items, built to last. Opposite clockwise; Autoselect Camper Van Hire for a long weekend away in a choice of fantastic campers, Brampton Brewery for locally brewed beers, spirits and wine, Brampton Manor for fine dining and spa treatments, Brampton Picture Framing for fine art
or Gift Vouchers, Chatsworth Chiropractors to start the route to fitness with a personal trainer, Ginspired for a huge selection of gins, spirits and more, Marsh Green Farm Shop for gifts for any food lover, Ingmans Shoes & Clothing for quality shoes and clothing from many top UK brands, make a date night voucher for Darwin & Bear for Mexican food and gaming. Cover Artist
me&thee Meet local illustrator Maria Brannen. Words: Simon Paterson Illustration: Maria Brannen, me&thee
M
aria Brannen aka ‘me&thee’ is the creative entrepreneur behind this month’s front cover. We’ve been following me&thee on Instagram and love her products adorned with our very own Derbyshire/South Yorkshire dialect; us Chesterfield lot are a mix of both! Maria grew up in Chesterfield until she left on an adventure to Liverpool University to study languages. Her degree enabled her to travel, spending a year studying in Aix-en-Provence, where she grew to love the French life so much that she decided to stay, working as a seasonaire in the Alps, where she met her husband, Craig. After spending two seasons in the Alps, it was time to come back to the UK, and they settled in Edinburgh and began a career copy writing for corporate affairs departments at several different companies.
Just over 10 years ago Maria returned to Chesterfield as a wife and mother to two beautiful children and a crazy dog!
When did you set up me&thee? "I created me&thee out of a love for our rich and often funny local dialect. In all honesty it was a creative outlet while I was on maternity leave with my youngest. That was six years ago! I didn’t do anything with my initial four designs until October last year when I created an Instagram account for me&thee and selling products on Etsy. “The idea came from my time spent away from Chesterfield. New friends would always try to guess where my accent was from, and although they’d rarely guess correctly, they had a lot of fun trying to ‘do’ the accent."
How many different designs and dialects are on your products? "I have 13 designs in total including ‘dead chuffed’ and ‘be reyt’. The initial four were ‘ey up duck’, ‘mardy bum’, ‘gaffer’, and ‘bobby dazzler’. "My designs are a light-hearted take on the way we speak, explained in a dictionary definition style for those who perhaps aren't as familiar with the words and phrases. My main aim is to make people smile, and create cards and gifts that do just that. All my products have a different, local saying on. They provide a sense of belonging, of Page 14
'this is us, and who we are'. And hopefully spark nostalgia as we remember some of the funny sayings our parents and grandparents used."
What do you like about the North Derbyshire/ South Yorkshire dialect? "There’s a down to earth friendliness about our accent and dialect. In my Instagram feed, I talk about what these phrases and sayings mean to me, and it’s mostly rooted in family experiences growing up.
Which local independents sell your products? "It has only been a year in October since I started actively working on me&thee, and I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to work with some brilliant independents. In the past few months I’ve started to sell my products in city centre shops in Leeds and Nottingham. The two local shops that have supported me since the beginning are Shop Indie in Chesterfield and Abode in Dronfield. I prefer to sell exclusively in to one shop per area, so that my products are unique to them. It also allows me to build a relationship with them and keep on top of stock demand." What do you love the most about Chesterfield? "It has to be our proximity to the Peak District. It’s like a big adventure playground, perfect for family fun exploring new places. It’s such a beautiful part of the country and we (the family) love being outdoors."
So, what are your plans for the future of me&thee? "My immediate focus is Christmas. I’m excited to be taking part in a retail pop-up at the Sheffield branch of John Lewis. It’s being run by a company
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
called Curated Makers, who bring together local artists/ makers and stock their products for sale within a high street store. This event runs from 2nd November all the way through till Christmas, so it’s a brilliant exposure opportunity for small independents like mine. "Then in January I’ll be able to take a proper look at my business strategy and where I’d like to take me&thee in our second year."
To celebrate me&thee's first birthday (15th October), Maria is offering 15% off to all of our readers. Visit her ETSY store online:

OCULI
Independent Eyewear Specialist Words & Images: Paul Chapman
E
xperienced dispensing opticians and husband and wife team, Chris and Kate Hirst, have been thinking for some time about setting up independently, but it wasn’t until they became aware of the premises at 420 Chatsworth Road, which they felt was the perfect location, that plans fell into place.
The last few months since signing the lease have been a whirlwind, explained Chris. "Between us we have over 50 years of optical experience, I work for Zeiss lenses and Kate has worked as a dispensing optician, and both of us are registered with the General Optical Council."
"Quality of eye care is so important. Any patient will be tested by a fully qualified optometrist and then dispensed by a qualified dispensing optician; Kate is also qualified to dispense contact lenses so we can offer a full eyecare service.
Page 18
"I’ve worked with independent businesses supplying lenses and Kate has worked as a locum, again with a number of independents. We like the way independents can offer support and are excited to be opening Oculi Opticians." ‘Oculi’ is Latin for ‘eyes’ and the couple were inspired by many of the single-word business names along Chatsworth Road.
"420 Chatsworth Road, next door to the Union Jack Fish and Chip shop, is a great location, easy to get to and with ample parking on the road or close by. We’re right in the centre of a wellpopulated urban area where so many people need the services of an optician, and we’re right on their doorstep," says Chris. Both are local residents, now living in Brampton, after moving to the area three years ago to be close to friends and family. Chris was previously
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
from Featherstone and Kate from Pleasley, but since moving they have been impressed by the strong sense of community that exists in Chesterfield and they are really excited to become a part of the thriving business community along Chatsworth Road.
The couple have invested in the business to offer the very latest in consulting room equipment, which allows for excellent eye examinations. Together with the Zeiss quality lenses Chris and Kate are looking forward to offering some great products.
"Zeiss is a large German company; with the core principles of 'pushing the boundaries of optics' and 'social responsibility', they supply high quality precision lenses which align with the key principles of our business," adds Chris.
Oculi have invested in iPad-based equipment which, together with a frame dropped in front of the patient’s eyes will provide measurements for fitting and positioning of glasses but without the need for close personal contact, so vital in these times where social distancing is important. Frames are sourced from quality independent European suppliers, Blackfin, an Italian company that import Japanese Titanium for their frames, Vanni Optical, who specialise in acetate frames, again Italian. Dutz and Lafont frames will also be available - check out the websites for these frames, each was chosen by Oculi for their high quality, independent credentials.
Oculi are already looking into products and services that can coexist alongside their eye care, such as hearing tests offered by qualified audiologists. People who are familiar with Dominic Gage Physiotherapy will be pleased to hear that he remains in one of the upstairs rooms at 420. Oculi will have opened their doors by the time you read this, and I could tell by chatting that Kate and Chris are really excited about the new business and joining the local business community. Oculi will be open Monday and Tuesday by appointment, Wednesday to Friday and Saturday morning for drop in clients.

Business Update
Great news. The scones are back! We meet Andy Crutchley the new owner of the CafÊ at Libby’s as they look forward to welcoming you back. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Libby's & Paul Chapman
Note: Please check the website and social media for any new restrictions in place due to government guidance.
Page 22
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
As we all know, the hospitality industry has been hit very hard by the pandemic and, following the sudden loss of a close friend during the summer, Libby took time to re-appraise the business. Andy has known Libby for a long time as a regular customer and, whilst browsing in the shop one day, asked Libby what her intentions were for the cafe.
"Running a cafe or deli has always been a bit of a pipe dream for me," Andy explained "and when Libby didn't immediately quash the idea of somebody else taking on the cafe, a conversation developed over the following few weeks. We reached an agreement which worked for both of us and I'm really excited to be realising my cafe dream and becoming part of the local business community."
"We will be offering some quality takeaway lunch options and sandwiches," says Andy. Andy runs a business selling advertising on the back of cinema tickets and, when lockdown hit and cinemas were forced to close their doors back in March, 90% of his revenue suddenly switched off. The short and long-term future of the cinema industry is very uncertain with major titles such as the new James Bond film 'No Time To Die' being put back until 2021, giving Andy the time to focus his attention on the cafe. The team will remain as they were and, most importantly for me, the scones are the same! But Covid has meant that the cafe business has had to adapt. Andy and the team have reconfigured inside to allow social distancing between tables. They've put in a takeaway/deli counter on the right of the door, so you can now enjoy Libby's food at home. If you're happy to brave the weather, there is also plenty of space to sit outside.
"All the team were furloughed through lockdown and, I'm delighted to say, they're really pleased to be back at work. I want to maintain as much continuity as possible and offer the same service we have all come to expect at Libby's... great breakfasts, scones, afternoon teas and cake" says Andy.
One thing that will be changing is a little more focus on the takeaway service. "I'm in discussion with some fabulous local suppliers and will be offering some quality takeaway lunch options and sandwiches." No excuses now! Ensure you take a break from home working and walk down to The Cafe at Libby's to get a great sandwich.
Whilst I was there Andy was sampling breads and pastries from Welbeck Bakehouse, one of the suppliers, and I can vouch for their produce... it is fab! He's also been researching other local suppliers. Andy and Emma use a veg box supplier at home and his findings are helping him put together a varied menu that recognises the growth of vegetarian, plant based, vegan and gluten free products. "Using local suppliers is at the top of my priority list. Locally sourced products, welfare of animals, food miles and sustainability all go hand in hand in today's market and we'll be no exception. "We will focus on ensuring we achieve zero waste over time. Local produce tends to come with less packaging so has less impact on our environment, and we'll be using biodegradable packaging for our takeaway food and drinks." The cafe opened its doors on 1st October so, by the time you read this, it will have been up and running for a few weeks. Table numbers may be reduced inside but Andy is keen to ensure the outside space is used when the weather allows.
So, if you've never been, it's a great time to sample the delights of The Cafe at Libby's and, if you're a regular, the same service returns, but with a new twist. The Cafe at Libby's 479 Chatsworth Road S40 3AD thecafeatlibbys

Cobblers To You!
Shoe repairs and sales to your door. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Ingman's
‘
Cobblers To You’… so you could take this two ways, but for Andrew and Darren it’s the start of a new service to one of Chesterfield’s best loved independent retailers and it’s their reaction to COVID-19 and the impact it’s having on their business! Ingman’s cobblers (that’s shoe repairers to those too young to know) and gentlemen’s outfitters are on Burlington Street and I love the way Andy, Darren (pictured) and the team approach stuff. When they encounter a problem, they don’t back away but meet it toe to toe, figuring out a way to fix things.
“It’s all too easy to sit back and hope things get better,” says Andy, “but that’s not the way to survive. Individually, and as a business we need to thrive, many people are staying in their homes due to the restrictions, but with the correct PPE, procedures and careful Page 26
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
“Many people are working from home, some indefinitely, these are busy people who aren’t visiting the town centre at lunch anymore. They are stuck to their home office, most of the time not leaving the house for lunch, when previously they’d have walked out of the office to go buy a sandwich and browse the local shops.”
So, Cobblers To You, born out of COVID, brings shoe repairing and sales direct to your door! Throughout lockdown, Andy has been working alone repairing shoes for customers across the country by introducing a postal service. He’s been doing a lot on social media and the web to tell people about the quality repairs available from his business and news is spreading. “Shoe repairs are coming from every corner of the country, but some repairs were fairly local, so I’d jump in the car and go fetch them. This has developed into a localised service for shoe repairs and I’m also offering shoe fitting and measuring, catalogues or products and a mobile shop with styles to try. The styles I bring are based on a discussion beforehand with the customer,” explains Andy.
Andy adds, "We are the first to offer this service officially, independent businesses need to have this pioneering spirit". The service is right for the moment, an extension of what they do now, face-to-face from the shop, but delivered as a mobile service.
Kids school shoes need a fix? Andy can pick them up Friday after school, repair them over the weekend and have them back to you Sunday night ready for school on Monday!
It’s sad that so many people are staying away from the town centre, it needs people to visit to stay vibrant, and when we do go into Chesterfield, we want quality services which is what Ingman’s do best. Whilst I was there, a customer called in to pick up a purse they had taken to be repaired. It needed a little more time to finish, so rather than asking the customer to call back, Andy took the address and promised to pop it round on his way home. Now that is customer service!
Andy is clearly excited to be bringing this bespoke service to Chesterfield. Look out for the ‘Cobblers To You’ branding on the van and be sure to give him a wave. The van enables Andy to offer a collect and return service for your repairs, a mobile shop with shoes to try in the comfort of your home, and he will be calling into local businesses to set up pop-up shops to spread the news of the services available. “We also have a bespoke handmade Shoeshine chair made by local business, Industrial Revolutions, that can be hired for weddings and we also use for our business pop-ups. We have also added payment plans so people can spread the cost of their purchases,” adds Andy.
Give Ingman’s a call to book a click-and-collect appointment, there’s a dedicated page on the website for it, and don’t forget you can order shoes and clothing online for delivery. Andy explained how important a shoe repair can be to someone. “We had a chap call about repairing a pair of deck shoes, he explained they were in pretty poor condition, but I said send them in and I’ll have an honest look.
“The shoes were really worn, almost ready for the bin to be honest but so I asked the customer ‘how deep is your love for these shoes?’ and he explained they had a real sentimental value and he’d appreciate whatever I could do. They belonged to his late brother and he just wanted to walk on the beach with him one more time. “I spent probably 15 hours over the next few weeks restoring these shoes to near original condition, plus added a personal engraving. Once back with the customer, he called me to say how thankful he was," say Andy. Turns out he is a cider maker and sent Andy a batch to say thank you! It’s service like this that sets Ingman’s apart, and we should be proud to have businesses like this in our town. Another great, independent business in Chesterfield's Market Hall.

Words: Paul Chapman
I
feel like I’ve been on a tour of local businesses over the past few weeks and S40 Local’s virtual bus's next stop was at Ginspired. Based in Chesterfield’s lovely Market Hall it’s a newly established, independent business - you know, the ones we love at S40 Local, and if you like a gin with a difference you’d better call in as they will definitely have something to wet your whistle… and it’s not only gins, they have a fantastic selection of fine Irish and Scottish whiskies, Caribbean rums, bourbons, craft beer and real ales.
Whilst I was in the store, one or two of their regular customers called in and chatted to Daz about what they liked and products they’d purchased from them previously. Daz carefully considered their feedback and offered some clear advice about new products to try. They made the suggested purchases, and will no doubt be back to try more, a friendly local service from a business owner who takes the time to listen to his customers.
Next stop Buxton, Matt saw premises that would give him the opportunity to open a craft beer and real ale store. It was here that Matt refined his model store and The Beer District (great name, that) has been successfully serving the residents of Buxton since November 2018, so if you’re ever in Buxton, please call in.
“Rums are becoming popular, they outsold whiskey over Christmas, which was a surprise but something that has led us to respond and seek out some great products to support this local demand.
The business is owned and run by Darren White and Matt Darken. The pair met in a craft ale business Matt had set up in Dronfield, Daz would call in for a beer to catch up and strangely he found himself calling in quite frequently. A friendship developed, and new ideas were discussed.
Darren came in as business partner and left his career in print to help run the store. The pair have been driving across to the far side of the Peak District for a while and started to look a bit closer to home for a business that would make the commute some days a bit shorter. “The unit in the Market Hall is a gem of local spirits and a growing collection of ales,” enthuses Daz, adding, “there really isn’t anything like it in Chesterfield.” “The majority of our gins and beers are all sourced locally, the whiskies and bourbons come from further afield - whiskies from Scotland, bourbons from around the States.
“We have a great range, but if there is something particular you’d like, we’ll do our very best to source it. If you like a particular flavour or taste, again, let us know and we’ll serve up a few options for you that you may not have tried.” Page 30
As well as being there to support people's love for their spirits, Ginspired is a great place for gifts, a gin from the Rhubarb Triangle for mum’s birthday, perhaps? Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions they can’t offer their usual sample, but they hope to offer a range to suit all palates and the opportunity to check before you buy as soon as they are able … but please be aware, this does not apply to everything!
“Our ales are all of great quality, bottle conditioned to ensure they are perfect when poured and from an ever-expanding range of small independents.”
“We get customers saying, ‘I’ve never heard of any of these’, and that’s exactly what we want to hear,” says Daz. That kind of sums up what inspires Ginspired, as I see it. A range that’s not the norm, is unique, expertly sourced and of the highest quality and will cater for all who call in. With Christmas not far away Ginspired will be a stocking a unique range of Christmas gifts, vouchers and will have advent calendars and crackers, plus much more. Please take a trip into town to check out Ginspired, make sure to say where you saw them... and enjoy a bit of discount with the voucher opposite.

Such is the reputation of Laterlivingnow that the company has been nominated by dozens of solicitors, accountants, clients and even other financial advisers for the Equity Release Awards 2020. Simon and Chris hold a qualification in 'Long-Term Care Fees Planning,' with Amanda aiming to emulate this success. Laterlivingnow is a member of the Equity Release Council and Simon now serves on the Advisory Board to The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA). Many people are looking to help and support their families as they struggle with the financial consequences of the pandemic, with record low interest rates fixed for life (from just 2.28% at the time of writing) often attracting them to a Lifetime Mortgage. Laterlivingnow have noticed an increase in enquiries from people seeking to move to a more rural setting, or enjoying the trend for ‘staycation’ holidays. The popular Lifetime Mortgage can be taken on a property that you wish to buy, not only on one in which you already own and live. Simon explained, “Recently, we have helped clients buy holiday lodges, motorhomes, or relocate to Scotland, for example. Many people are seeking a quieter life, following the Covid-19 outbreak.” Laterlivingnow has also found more people taking advantage of the flexible ‘income’ that a ‘drawdown’ type of Lifetime Mortgages offers. Many plans allow you to take a modest initial sum from, typically, £10,000 then to withdraw smaller sums from as little as £2,000 a time. “This can provide a lifeline to someone who has been made redundant, or has a struggling business,” Simon explained. Laterlivingnow’s strength is its independence from the big firms that advertise on TV, as they advise on the whole of the market for Equity Release, not just one or two lenders. The event has kindly been sponsored by Home Instead, Elliot Mather Solictors and BRM Solicitors, and at the time of going to print tickets had been selling well. With no limit to the number of Zoom attendees able to take part we’re hoping to exceed last year’s amount raised, but that's where we need your help to sell as many tickets as possible.
oin us on Saturday 14 November between 7 and 9pm, for the Chesterfield Satellite Rotary Club online quiz, raffle and auction. Entry is £15 with all funds going to local charities. The only restriction on numbers in a team is how many are in your bubble and how many people you can get round your screen!
Why not sign up and challenge your, friends, family or neighbours to take part?
For the last few years, the Rotary club has hosted a quiz at the Loundlsey Green Community Centre, last year raising £1,800 for local charities. With COVID restrictions this year it’s taking place online. Thanks to Zoom … if you’ve not come across Zoom, it’s an application that allows video and audio conferencing, (Google it) and what’s more, you can join in the fun from the comfort or you armchair.
In addition to what promises to be a great night’s entertainment we’ve enlisted the legendary Bernie Clifton to get things off to a fun start, and he’ll be popping onto the call throughout the night. We know many charities have found this year tough and we’ll be supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and The Elm Foundation with our event.
The quiz will consist of six of rounds of ten questions, the picture quiz always goes down well plus we hope to do a music round and video clips. They’ll be an auction with items kindly donated from Brampton Barbers, Fred’s Haberdashery, Michael South Photography, S40 & S41 Local magazines, Shop Indie, Specsavers, The Creation Station, and many more.
Page 34
The event normally serves up pie and peas but obviously this can’t happen, but you could preorder a takeaway and maybe accompany it with a local brewed beverage, there is a good choice to be had, I hear!
Tickets (via website) are £15 for a team of any size and covers £10 entry plus 5 x £1 raffle tickets. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased on the night and we're hoping for some great auction bids.
All details can be found on the web and social media, links as below. I look forward to seeing you on the night, virtually of course!

How to benefit from investing immediately
L
et’s face it, 2020 hasn’t really gone to plan, has it? From enduring a global pandemic, to juggling our days around remote working (and home schooling for many!), our lives and our finances have been turned upside down.
for less money. Short sellers bet on, and profit from, a drop in a security's price. Short selling has a high risk/reward ratio: it can offer profits, but losses can mount quickly and infinitely.
As such, it might surprise you to know that you may be able to benefit from investing, even during these challenging times. Yes, you read that right. There is money to be potentially made in bad markets as well, and here at Jones & Co, that’s exactly what we aim to deliver for each of our investment clients.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused about where to turn with your finances, please get in touch. Our team of independent financial advice experts can take a look at your investment paperwork you’ve stashed in a drawer and help you make sense of your finances. So, call or email us to arrange your free, no obligation consultation and start benefiting from your investments immediately.
If you have an investment or investment portfolio, I can totally understand why you may have avoided looking at any recent paperwork relating to its performance! Values have been stripped since February this year and some investments are still suffering now, so that paperwork probably won’t make positive reading.
How do we do this? As financial advisors, we start by analysing your situation so that we can implement a clear strategy for you. That strategy will include certain tactics, not just diversification, and appropriate recommendations to invest in a variety of investment funds. Investment funds are, in turn, controlled by fund managers – the people who implement a fund’s investing strategy and manage its portfolio trading activities – who deploy both straightforward and complex investment strategies in relation to various market conditions. The desired outcome for both a financial advisor and a fund manager is, of course, the delivery of positive investment returns irrespective of whether the markets are falling or rising.
By utilising a variety of tactics, in essence, your investment seeks positive returns for your investment portfolio through bad markets not just good ones – we don’t stop when the world turns upside down. That’s why now is a good time to review your existing investment or give serious consideration to a new investment, even in what some might consider a volatile or uncertain market.
Mark Jones Dip PFS MCISI, is managing director of Jones & Co
There are lots of different methods used within specific investment strategies. Hedging is one method that is commonly employed. Hedging against investment risk means strategically using financial instruments or market strategies to offset the risk of any adverse price movements. Put another way, investors hedge one investment by making a trade in another.
Short selling is another method and occurs when an investor borrows a security and sells it on the open market with the view to buying it back later Risk warnings: Investments go up or down in value and on encashment you could potentially get back less than originally invested. My Future
Chesterfield launches a UK first! A virtual careers fair! Words & Images: Destination Chesterfield
W
e keep being told about the challenging time our young people are going to have finding jobs - made more difficult when the traditional routes for obtaining information getting at careers fairs is no longer possible due to restrictions. 'My Future' is an innovative online careers and employability platform, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, and is helping employers reach prospective apprentices and future employees in a virtual, online careers fair.
Page 38
It is completely free for young people to use and enables easy access to up to 100 businesses, education and training providers, across ten zones in a virtual careers fair setting. ‘My Future’ provides information about the business and allows apprentice positions to be advertised. Developed by local business Oasis Studios, in response to a tender from a partnership of Chesterfield Borough Council, Destination Chesterfield and the D2N2 North Derbyshire Careers Hub, the platform uses 360expo software.
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
With present COVID restrictions, faceto-face careers fairs are not able to take place, resulting in young people not being able to easily access information about future apprenticeship positions.
‘My Future’ is designed to provide support for young people, and the platform aims to give local young people access to the widest range of high-quality careers advice, employment support, skills and educational programmes.
I recently attended a virtual breakfast event by Destination Chesterfield that introduced the platform to the local business community. Ahead of its launch, careers leaders in the D2N2 North Derbyshire Careers Hub, who works with schools and colleges within Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, had already reached out to all Year 11 and Year 13 school leavers, encouraging them to access the ‘My Future’ platform. On GCSE results day, more than 150 young people logged on to the platform and spent on average 207 minutes exploring the virtual careers fair. Oasis Studio Associate, Charlie Power explains, “The My Future platform is a pioneer in the world of exhibitions, and is a significant step as we adjust to a new way of life. “As much as our 360expo software allows exhibitions to go ahead whilst social distancing restrictions are still in place, we believe the platform can assist exhibitions in the future once we can attend again.”
James Brand is a D2N2 LEP board member and Managing Director of Chesterfield-based, United Cast Bar, which is featured in the engineering and manufacturing zone on the platform. “’My Future’ is a fantastic platform which we were delighted to get involved with. It’s a great opportunity for businesses to reach out to young people during these challenging times. The platform will offer real support and guidance to school leavers who have been unable to access the careers information they would normally have had, and helps them make informed decisions about their future,” said James. Dom Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager, explained, “Everyone has worked tremendously hard to get the platform up and running. We have been overwhelmed by the support and involvement of businesses and training providers to make ‘My Future’ happen and support local school leavers during this challenging time”. If you are a young person wanting to seek out the learning about the many opportunities available to you, please visit www.myfuture.org.uk. If you are a local business who would like to be featured on the My Future platform, please contact Emily Williams (email: Emily.williams@chesterfield.gov.uk).

This Christmas, we could not pass up the opportunity to give back to Chesterfield Royal and show gratitude for all of the crucial work that our local hospital and its staff have done for our town in the last year. Get to Know Nature Better Words: Holly Booker Image: Holly Booker & Adobe Stock
The pied flycatcher is a summer visitor to the UK. They nest in woodland that has lots of old oak trees, before returning to Africa for the winter. Page 42
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
D
uring lockdown, many of us spent more time in nature than we would usually have done. In our back gardens, local parks and woods we were able to discover things we hadn’t noticed before. As I looked for places to walk from my house for my daily exercise, I consulted the Ordnance Survey map. I found a whole network of footpaths and bridleways around Brampton and Linacre, so I set about exploring and making the most of the weather. On my walks I found out that pied flycatchers make their home in Linacre Woods, I smelled the bluebells, felt the warm sun on my face, heard the breeze blowing through the treetops and even helped myself to raspberries later on in the summer. All of my senses were alive with nature! I am a person who is naturally drawn to nature; I always have been. I feel a strong connection with it and find comfort in it whenever I am feeling down. For the last fifteen years, I have worked for nature conservation charities, such as the RSPB, the National Trust and the Woodland Trust and my focus has been on getting people out into nature, by hosting special events and working on marketing and promotion to attract visitors to nature reserves. I have now turned my focus to helping people to get to know nature and how beneficial it is for their health and wellbeing, by running guided walks that feature nature, discovery along with elements of forest bathing and mindfulness.
There is growing concern that many people have lost their connection to nature – even children are becoming increasingly disconnected and it is not good for people, and even worse for the planet. David Attenborough was once asked “When did you find your love for nature?” and he answered simply, “When did you lose yours?” We all have an innate connection to other living things in the world around us - think of a child’s fascination with a ladybird, or how the sound of birdsong or a flowing river is soothing, or how plants make a room feel better - but we get so wrapped up in the world we have created for ourselves that our connection to the very ecosystem that keeps us alive slips away.
As we lose our connection with the natural world around us, our own health and wellbeing can suffer. Levels of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues seem to be forever on the rise and there are a multitude of reasons for this. However, I firmly believe that there is something we can all do to help improve our own wellbeing, and ultimately the wellbeing of our planet, and the first step is to take notice of nature. There is mounting evidence being gathered by several universities in the UK that experiencing nature in certain ways helps us to deepen our understanding and appreciation of it. By actively putting our attention into experiencing nature in these ways, we can connect on different levels, and ultimately, discover more about both nature and ourselves. I will be running two walks this November on Sunday 15th and Sunday 29th. These first two walks will be free and I will be gathering feedback from those who take part. To find out more about how I can help you to rediscover your connection, get to know nature and start your journey to natural happiness, visit:

Jo, at Kip, helped me to see that I wasn’t struggling as much as I thought with my GCSEs. "Hi, I am Amy and I am nearly 15 and in year 10 at school this year starting my GCSEs like so many of you. I missed so much during lockdown and the school closures and it was really bothering me. However, compared to many I am in a good place with my family but I was worrying about my English GCSEs as my spelling is bad and I can never come up with good things to write about. I have a little brother, Chris, he is only 9 and not doing so well at school so my grandma decided to pay for him to go to Kip to try and catch up. He started in the summer as preparation for going back to school and he is doing great. He has already improved his reading, even I can see that. Anyway I have to take him to Kip for his lesson on a Tuesday, which he loves, and while he is in there I sit and wait and do some of my homework. Jo is really nice and often around. She asks me about what homework I am doing and even let me sit at a spare desk once because they had one free to make it easier for me to do my work. A few weeks ago some kids came in and went into their lessons. I could hear loads of laughing and some clapping at one point. I asked Jo what they were clapping for and she said that one of the students had just achieved reading 100 words, from the 15 or so when he first joined in the summer. Chris told me all about it on the way home. The following week I got really stuck on my English and asked Jo for help. After she helped me, she asked how I was getting on with my GCSEs, particularly Maths and English. She
was so nice so I told her I was not so good at my English and some of the Maths was hard and that I had missed so much I was really scared I wouldn’t get the grades to get into the 6th form college to do A levels. I want to be a teacher so I have to get good grades for both GCSE English and Maths. Jo said that if I wanted to she could do a free assessment in both subjects and then we could see if I really did have gaps or if it was just because I was only starting in Year 10. As she said, you don’t know everything when you start a subject, it comes gradually until you look back and see how much you know. My parents agreed. I was really scared in case I was really bad at them.
I did the tests and Jo sat down and explained that I was actually pretty good in Maths and my English spelling was a bit weak but my overall writing scores were fine. She said that they could help me if that was what was needed but right now I was doing ok. I felt so happy to know I wasn’t behind at all and that if I did get lower marks in the end of year tests or found a particular subject hard to understand they could help me with a few lessons on just that. I don’t think I need it right now but I love knowing Jo is there if I need her in the coming months." If you think you need help with your GCSEs why not ask your parents to get Jo to do an assessment for you. Maybe they or your grandparents could pay for it like mine did for my little brother. Good luck! Amy. Call Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611.

Well Dressed
Celebrating Hercule Poirot & St Leonard Words: Paul Chapman Images: John Botham & Margaret Hersee
E
ach year, wells across the county are dressed up for a few weeks over the bank holiday weekend. This year we had the well dressing teams from Holymoorside and Spital Cemetery get in touch to let us know what they'd been up to. WIKI: Well dressing, also known as well flowering, is a tradition practised in some parts of rural England in which wells, springs and other water sources are decorated with designs created from flower petals. The custom is most closely associated with the Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire. James Murray Mackinlay, writing in 1893, noted that the tradition was not observed in Scotland; W. S. Cordner, in 1946, similarly noted its absence in Ireland. Both Scotland and Ireland do have a long history of the veneration of wells, however, dating from at least the 6th century. The custom of well dressing in its present form probably began in the late 18th century, and evolved from "the more widespread, but less picturesque" decoration of wells with ribbons and simple floral garlands.
Holymoorside: John Botham John Botham has been in touch to let us know that this year they celebrated 100 years of Hercule Poirot! Agatha Christie's first novel, 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles', was first published in 1920. The scene is Poirot and Hastings searching the bedroom - see if you can find all ten clues! (The snails are not clues, they're a Holymoorside tradition!) In the frame, we illustrated four Hercule Poirot novels for visitors to identify. This year we just completed one well dressing, in order to allow us to socially distance. Unfortunately, we decided Page 46
we could not do the children's or teen's well. This smaller frame separates into five pieces, so we were able to spread out. It also helps that we always work outdoors anyway, which is safer. We put up gazebos, but the weather was not kind! It still took longer to complete because of the limited numbers.
The Holymoorside well dressing is always up for two weeks, starting the Friday before August Bank Holiday, so 2021 it will be 27 August to 12 September.
Spital Cemetery: Margaret Hersee As many well dressings have been cancelled this year, we had wondered if we would be able to go ahead. We had planned to do St Leonard for a number of years as this year was the 125th anniversary of the opening of St Leonard's Mission and John Gascoyne had put in a request that we 'do' him at some point.
St Leonard was a Norman abbot in France and England who died in AD559. Always depicted holding a length of chain, he was known for his work with prisoners and for his healing. As in many areas, the local leper hospital from the 12th century was named after him. When the new mission chapel opened on Valley Road in Spital 125 years ago, that too was dedicated to him. The dressing was sited next to where the remains of a leper priest, discovered in a garden opposite in 2000, are buried. Thanks to: Catherine, Helen, Kate, Lyn, Margaret and Sally for publicity and decorative work. Thanks also to Martyn, Liz, Stuart and Alan for help with transport to and from the site in the Cemetery. The additional image shows a salmon in mosaic format which was on display by Don Catchment Rivers Trust at Tapton Lock Visitors Centre.

Garden Tips
November Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Pictures: Robert Nixon Betts

f you have been organised enough to order barerooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.
Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.
Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost.
Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.
If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.
Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more. Page 50

Shining a Light on the Creativity of Chesterfield Kakou and Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership Words & Image: Kakou
K
akou is an engineering social enterprise that aims to bridge the gap between the sciences, creative arts and social wellbeing. We believe that the arts contribute significantly to the artistic, cultural and economic life of communities; building social cohesion, making places special as well as improving the health and wellbeing of individuals. Kakou was one of the first businesses to move into the new Incubation Hub at the University of Derby's St Helena's Campus. Since then Kakou, has grown from strength to strength.
As a response to the Cultural Education Challenge set by Arts Council England, the Partnership was set up to improve educational, cultural and social outcomes for children and young people through strengthening interaction between cultural organisations (including libraries, arts and heritage) and schools, in places where it is most needed.
As well as providing engineering design consultancy, we also deliver regular STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) activities in local schools and community settings. Last October, we launched our Social Fuse platform to showcase organisations that have STEM expertise and knowledge, and act as a matchmaker between the public, private and third sector to develop joint projects that will engage young people and the general public with STEM.
The initiative reflects a drive over recent years by the education sector, to integrate career-related learning into education in order to address a shortfall in young people with STEM qualifications entering the workforce in manufacturing, engineering and technology-based industries.
We also believe that creativity in education is as essential as STEM, Maths and English, and that its importance has been ignored for too long. Being creative and developing creative skills supports mental well-being and resilience during childhood, adolescence and later life and this should be nurtured. At the start of lockdown we released our Chesterfield Pride - St. Helena artwork, a giant canvas of the St. Helena campus (home of the University's College of Health and Social Care), made with the help of the students, teachers and staff of St. Helena, and the festival-goers of Chesterfield Pride 2019. Prints of the canvas are available from our online shop, with the proceeds of sales being donated to #ProtectYourNHS - the charity of Chesterfield Royal Hospital. During Lockdown, we have been working in partnership with Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership to deliver workshops and activities.
Page 54
Through this partnership, we have run the Fusion Music project – an ensemble of musicians, singers and BSL sign-singers from across Chesterfield and surrounding areas coming together to create a virtual lockdown music group; and we are working in collaboration with the Don Catchment Rivers Trust on their Hidden Heritage Secret Streams project – rediscovering the nature and heritage of the River Rother. Our new project is A Climate of Change, which runs until March 2021. We’re inviting the young people of Chesterfield to send in their artwork (poetry, drawings, photography, and music) that captures their experience of Lockdown. It’s a chance for them to express how the social, cultural and environmental changes seen over the past year have affected them. The artwork from this project will be exhibited at our Cultural Lockdown exhibition in 2021, alongside other works produced by the Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership. Episode 2: Patawawa & Aaron's 'Exennials' Words: Aaron Brown
A
huge welcome to Episode Two of S40time. It's great to see that after our first episode was posted (online) and printed, our audience numbers increased. With the arts and entertainment industries hit hard financially and emotionally this year, my aim, is to shine a spotlight on our local talent, giving the industry a welcome boost during this uncertain time.
For those who tuned in to the first episode "proper" with Chesterfield film-maker Kai Undrell, you’ll be aware of what an astute, articulate and engaging young man he is; much wiser than his tender 19 years would suggest and one would expect a bright and illustrious career ahead of him. If you didn’t catch it, see our S40time channel on Youtube, where Kai and myself discussed his short film, “Stand Up” (see Amazon), as well as his upcoming documentary on the “British Invasion” of bands to the US in the 60’s, with a focus on local hit-maker Dave Berry. Kai also waxes lyrical about his love of Chesterfield, and his journey as a film-maker starting out at the Royal Shakespeare Youth Theatre, studying the Film and Media course at Chesterfield College, and filming “Stand Up” at Chesterfield’s Avenue venue. It was also Kai who shot rising stars Clear Vinyl’s electric performance at The Leadmill in Sheffield last November, capturing the emotionally charged evening to perfection, and he also speaks passionately about his work with the Melodic Caring Project.
Episode 2; I sit down with Sam Wilmot - singer with Matlock band Patawawa (pictured), who have wowed Festival audiences far and wide in the UK since playing their first ever gig at The Sun Inn in Chesterfield five years ago. At the start of the year, demand was such in Japan that fans funded the flights for the band, enabling them to achieve the dream of a lifetime; and their tune “Patagonia” was even chosen by “Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown to launch her new makeup range. With 6Music and Radio One sessions under their belts earlier this year, and a new album due, 2020 was expected to propel the band into orbit. With a Main Stage slot at the YNot and Tramlines Festivals cancelled for a second time, though, Sam still remains upbeat and excited about the band's prospects, whilst a virtual YNot Festival streamed late July went some way to making up for the lack of a festival scene this year. Page 60
s40time s40 time
I'm excited to say that the S40time team is joined by producer Robert Brooks, and cameraman Tim Fawkes whose usual job is to operate cameras and lighting in arena gigs for the likes of The Prodigy! They’re coming onboard today and their expertise will enable us to not only livestream our podcasts, but possibly whole gigs. We will be recording an episode with one of the area’s best known local musicians - Damon Downs - axeman supremo with Towards The Sun, and tracing his journey from rocking the areas best known venues to crowds as far as Australia and Israel.
On a personal note, I’ve not been able to gig since March, so as well as ploughing myself into the podcast, I’ve been recording my own solo album over the summer with producer and artist Danny Burton. With a working title of “The Exennials”, I’m observing from the perspective of my unique generation which has seen the “before and after” of the internet age, and I’m incredibly happy with the results. With the ethereal sheen of The Verve omnipresent throughout the album, I can’t wait for you all to hear the results in a month or two.
In the meantime, please search for S40time on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and subscribe, engage and make suggestions as much as possible. It’ll really help me make more content and celebrate the rich diversity of talent that the town and county have to offer.
