The Chesterfield Arms A taste of the country, in town! Words: Simon Paterson Images: Chesterfield Arms
When it comes to a Christmas pint or a mulled wine (preferably both), there is only one local pub that springs to mind, The Chesterfield Arms. Emma and Josh took over the Chesterfield Arms in November of 2017, right before the Christmas rush. They had, but a couple of weeks to make the pub their own and create a positive, festive feel for all who visited. So, it’s a good job is Emma is a highly experienced Publican with a vision on a mission! Emma’s CV includes the Tramway Tavern on Chatsworth Road, which, with the help of her team played huge a part in its revamp… her parents ran The Rutland pub for over 17 years, which was a go to pub in our beloved town centre for many a decade, so it’s fair to say she knows her way around a local boozer or two (in a very different way to most of us). Walking into the Chesterfield Arms is like entering a 19th century tavern. It has bags of character with its rustic feel, cosy warm fire and relics that dawn the walls from a time gone by. A warm and comforting aroma tantalises your nasal passage, pulling you towards the bar where a plethora of fine beverages are available. Page 8
With a bank of 12 pumps, there’s a drink for every pallet. Permanent fixtures such as Bass Bitter, the ever changing Thornbridge beers and the rest coming from far and wide, with a selection of fantastic local brews from in and around Derbyshire! Emma and the team haven’t missed the gin revolution either, with Pigeon Fishers and Grain artisan Gins made at Barlow, and Chatsworth Gin, made on the historic estate itself, to name but a few! Emma’s commitment to innovation has led to some unmissable events at the Arms including stand-up comedy nights, quirky quizzes and a Christmas singalong with the Honeybelles this festive period. So, get your family and friends together this Christmas and I’ll see you at the Chesterfield Arms, mines a ‘Scary hairy’, quite fitting really!

Swim 121 Words: Simon Paterson Images: Swim 121
O
ur eldest daughter Evangeline learnt to swim at Swim 121 in Hasland, but swimming isn’t the only life-skill she learnt. Having swimming lessons enabled her develop confidence in and out the water and was a springboard for her to go on to ride a bike, learn to sing and perform on stage. Without the perseverance, resilience and willpower instilled in her by the Instructors at Swim 121 she may never have gone on do any of those things at such a young age. Why we chose Swim 121 First and foremost, Swim 121 are a family run business and that’s very important to us. When you choose an independent business, you are supporting a local family, plus, someone told us they are the best at they do (they were right). With over 25 years’ experience Glyn and Lynn set up Swim121, and quickly saw it grow into the largest independent 121 swimming programme in Derbyshire and were industrially recognised by the STA as the first independent swimming school to achieve STA accreditation. The pool is in the grounds of the Croft, in an intimate semi- rural setting. depending on the swimmer’s progress, unlike group sessions where lessons are static. This worked well for Evangeline as she is a fast learner. The team at Swim 121 pride themselves on being a fully inclusive service and have a long history of teaching children and adults with additional needs. Having successfully taught individuals with cerebral palsy, autism, downs syndrome, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, dwarfism, partial paralysis, hearing and sight impaired, Amputees, Epilepsy, ADHD, and Learning difficulties. The benefits of swimming for these individuals are endless…Joseph’s mum Rose had this to say “My son Joseph has cerebral palsy; Joseph has now completed his bronze challenge and bronze personal survival completing the Swim121 award programme, we choose to continue to keep Joseph enrolled within the programme as his physio has commented on his improved flexibility and Joseph really enjoys the lessons provided.” Rose- Ashgate Bekah and I cannot recommend Swim 121 enough. Business Intro
For Independence and Supporting the Makers...
Shop Indie Words: Paul Chapman Images: Shop Indie
S
“It’s through these markets that we met a number of people similar to us, making their own range of quality products, selling them at markets and then packing away until they appear at the next similar event.
Shop Indie isn’t new though, as partners – in life, and in business - Lisa and John, have been in business for ten years as Altered Chic, embracing ecommerce and offering their range of products online from their own web shops and through online platforms such as Etsy and Notonthehighstreet.
“This got us thinking. What if we brought a number of makers together under the same ‘virtual’ roof and sold them together with our products. We started talking to people and it wasn’t long before we had a way to bring these fabulous makers into the public eye. 2018 saw Shop Indie launch online , it was great, response was good but certain products were limited as they are very difficult to sell online.
hop Indie is the new independent name mixing it with the high street big boys of Vicar Lane. Selling gifts, cards, homewares and quirkiness they offer a fantastic range of products from small makers near and far, something that has been made with a bit of love.
Altered Chic is run from a space in the Clocktower Business Centre in Staveley where Claire, Lisa’s sister, is employed to fulfil orders and stay on top of everything needed, a real family business. I like the way Lisa and John work together. Lisa is the creative, she produces her range of cards, wall art, decorations, printed ribbons, lasercut products etc. John is the technical one, sorting out the website, making ecommerce work and also lugging the odd box or two. The pair run the business around their young family, the independence giving them the flexibility that coping with the hectic timetable of events being parents demands of you. Getting the work life balance right, although I’m sure it doesn’t feel like that all the time! “We often take our products out to craft and niche markets” explains John, “to get some feedback face to face from people about what we’re doing and the lines we sell. Page 18
“Candles and scented products typically don’t go well, I suppose it’s difficult to sell these as no one really knows what they smell like, and it’s from here that we started discussing the idea of a physical shop.” The pair started looking for a shop premises in addition to the unit at Clocktower, they spoke to the council to see what might be available, there wasn’t really anything that was a) the right size, b) in the right location and, perhaps most importantly c) at an affordable rent! “We were then put in touch with the new ownership team at Vicar Lane ” says John. “They were looking for ways of increasing the number of independent retailers in their units in line with feedback they’d been getting from shoppers. “Vicar Lane put together a lease package that we couldn’t refuse, and we are still extremely thankful to them for helping us make this step onto the high street. We also have Rate Cute close by, another independent retailer, and Vicar Lane
www.s41local.com
are really keen to increase the mix of independents to large retail stores, which will help make Chesterfield town centre more interesting for shoppers.” The pair clearly love what they do, they have taken a brave move to open up a real store selling real products, made by a bunch of really talented people both locally and across the UK. “I like to think we offer something that isn’t just following a trend, our products stand out. When we think about what to stock, we try and place ourselves in the position of the customer, would we like it if we saw it in store? “The range is more personal, many are made lovingly in small batches, and we also have a selection of products which can be personalised. If you give one of our products as a gift, it feels a bit more thoughtful, more carefully selected perhaps.” If you are a local maker, Lisa and John would love to understand a bit more about your products as they might be just right for their store. Contact details are at the end.
As Christmas approaches be sure to add Shop Indie as a destination for your gift buying. And if you don’t see anything first time be sure to call in again as stock and lines change frequently due to the nature of the small numbers in which they are produced. Shop Indie are also promoting the ‘Just A Card’ campaign, which enables you to show your support to independents, as any small purchase - even just a card here and there - can make all the difference to a small business surviving on the high street. I wish them all the best for the venture and if you do call down to check them out, as always please mention where you heard of them, S40 & S41 Local. Your Place... In Our Market Dom Stevens from Destination Chesterfield Words & Images: Dom Stevens
For the tastiest local produce for your Christmas meal, not to mention Christmas gift ideas for family and friends – Chesterfield has all you need. Ibbotsons fruit and veg stall has been standing on Chesterfield market since 1945 and is run by the third generation of the Ibbotson family. They recently took merged with Ayres fruit and veg stall and stand on the market six days per week offering top quality fruit, vegetables and salad produce. Owner Nick Ibbotson says: “We now have much more room to display the produce – meaning we are not able to stock more produce and offer more variety for our customers. Their produce is, where possible, sourced locally to reduce the mileage involved and the impact on the environment. Nick says: “We source as much as we can locally – everything is much fresher than you would get in a supermarket. “The big sellers at Christmas are carrots, sprouts and parsnips – people tend to buy them for Christmas lunch whether they like them or not. The ones we have here will have been growing in the ground yesterday and are here on the stall today ready for you to cook tomorrow.” Chesterfield Market Hall also hosts a variety of stalls to offer you the ingredients for your perfect Christmas including: W Hodkin Butchers offering a variety of meat and poultry; Lamb’s cupcakes offering Christmas cakes, biscuits and traybakes Page 26

and the Fruit and Nut Centre selling dried fruits for your cakes and puddings and nuts for after your Christmas meal. The outside of the Market Hall also has Davidson’s Cheese Factor for stocking your Christmas cheeseboard; Thanks a Bunch Flowers and Gifts offering all you need for your festival floral displays and gift ideas. To give you a break from the shopping and the chance to warm up with a hot drink and a mince pie – call into Chesterfield Market Café in the Market Hall. There is a market taking place each day from Thursday 12 December to Monday 24 December (selected traders standing on non-market days) – this includes the usual general markets, the flea market each Thursday and the farmers’ market on Thursday 13 December. There will also be festive-themed artisan markets on Sunday 24 November and Sunday 22 December held in association with The Market Co offering the very best produce from local providers as well as unique gifts and crafts. Beyond Chesterfield Market check out the pages of S40 & S41 Local for a great independent traders with plenty of unique and distinctive gifts. CRAFT BEERS Three beers to try this month Words & Images: James Crawley
AION Brewery: Alpha Delta Brewing Style: Double IPA ABV: 8% Alpha Delta Brewing are a brewery based in Newcastle. They’ve recently appeared shrouded in mystery but with quite a bit of hype. They’ve clearly got good pedigree and their first two releases, a Double IPA and an Imperial Stout have received great reviews. I look forward to seeing what’s coming next from these guys. When something is being hyped up, it can often fall short, thankfully this DIPA lives up to the hype. Lots of fruity aromas, mango, passionfruit, melon and peach. It’s got great body, really thick and smooth and has a nice juiciness. Lots of mango and passionfruit flavours up front with some soft peach, some tangy citrus and a dank, nicely bitter finish. They’ve set the bar high with this, a great debut.
Triple Fruited Gose – White Guava, Pink Guava and Mango Brewery: North Brewing Co Style: Triple Fruited Gose ABV: 4.5% Based in Leeds and founded in 2015 North produce a small core range alongside seasonal specials. They’ve been on top form this year producing some fantastic beers in cans that showcase some great, distinctive artwork from Refold. They have become renowned for their Triple Fruited Goses and are arguably the best at producing that style in the country. This is another cracking fruited gose from North. Big fruity aromas as you’d expect, plenty of guava and mango with hints of citrus. It’s thick, smooth and creamy, really fresh tasting. Lots of chewy mango flavours with juicy, tropical guava, a nice tartness, then a nicely rounded, slightly dry, sweet but salty finish. A very nice, refreshing beer. I picked this up online but it should be available from most good craft beer shops in and around Chesterfield.
Page 28
www.s41local.com
If you fancy a cold and alcoholic coffee which raises a bit of money for charity, then you can pick this up at The Beer Stop at Dronfield and most good beer shops. Please note, I’m not suggesting this replaces your morning coffee!
The low-down IPA – India Pale Ales are typically hoppier than Pale Ales and have an ABV of around 6-8%. US style IPAs are often referred to as West Coast or East Coast (or New England style). West Coast tend to be clear, more resinous, piney and bitter with fruity hop flavours. East Coast IPAs tend to be hazy in appearance with the hops used primarily for flavour and aroma with intense fruit flavours but generally low bitterness. DIPA – Double IPA, a bigger IPA, more hops and more booze, usually weighing in at around 8-10%.
Nazerbier Brewery: Cloudwater Style: Porter ABV: 6% Cloudwater are one of the biggest names in the UK craft beer scene, founded in 2014 and based in Manchester they’ve built up a reputation as one of the best. Keep an eye out for their Friends, Family & Beer festival in February, one of the best beer festivals around. This was brewed in memory of George Nazer who worked at Cloudwater’s London taproom. If you check out the Cloudwater website there’s a blog post on it, George sounded like one of the good guys who sadly passed away far too young. This was brewed using George’s favourite coffee and all the proceeds from the beer go to the SEDEP Action charity, so as well as enjoying a delicious beer, you’re doing a little good in the world.
Porter – A dark style of beer developed in London in the 18th century. Very similar to stouts, the history of stouts and porters is very much intertwined. It is thought that stouts developed from strong porters that were sometimes called “stout porters”. Gose – An old German style dating as far back at the 13th century. A sour beer traditionally brewed with at least 50% wheat, coriander and salt. Modern day versions are often made without wheat and have fruit added. For more beer reviews and the occasional food review check out my Instagram page.
jcrawley81
This has huge coffee aromas up front backed up by roasted malts with hints of chocolate and vanilla and a subtle smokiness. It’s got good body for the ABV and it’s smooth and rich. Lots of sweet coffee flavours at first with roasted malts and chocolate, some subtle burnt flavours before a nice bitter coffee finish. Please Mention S41 Local

When we looked back at the ten editons we were blown away by how fantastic they were. Something needed to be done, to celebrate this talented bunch of artists who had worked on the covers. T
he NCS (National Citizen Service) programmes have now finished and my team and I are now enjoying a bit of down time after our graduation events.
This year over 650 young people graduated from our NCS programme. Between them they completed over 33,000 hours of social action and charity work! The positive impact these socially conscious young leaders have made on our local communities will be felt for years to come. NCS not only changes the lives of young people across the country, it has had a profound effect on mine. I have become a far more tolerant, resilient and progressive individual, always ready to challenge those who are not! For this I am truly grateful. The Christmas edition marks a full year at the helm of S41 Local Magazine and what a year it has been. It hasn’t been without its challenges and almost monthly I question myself as to whether I can go on running a business, co-parenting two children and not only holding down a fulltime job, but being the best I can be at it, because that's what NCS deserves! Just when I think ‘that’s it, last edition’, either a local business or a reader tells me how much they enjoy reading it and/or how have supported their business.
Page 32
So, don’t worry we aren’t going anywhere… The day job requires me to commute and work from the big smoke occasionally. Last month we had a team strategy day in Oxford Circus. Our leader Jon (CEO) had arranged for us to work at a very cool place indeed. The building was home to a plethora of environmentally conscious companies and groups including Extinction Rebellion. I met one of the most inspirational and empowering men, ever! His name was Tony and he was worth in excess of over 500 million pounds! So, what does a man with this amount of money do with it all? He employs Radical Lawyers, Activists and Story Tellers. He pays for them to fight injustice in the world and free those imprisoned in less tolerant countries for trying to make a positive change to society. Tony, you are the man! If only the world was full of Tony’s. Peace, love and positivity Simon

Local Business Hero
Dave Trickett
This months Local Hero Words: Paul Chapman Images: Dave Trickett
W
e meet up with Local Hero, Dave Trickett, a man who has run 30 plus marathons and half marathons, and in doing so has helped raise over £130,000 for local charities. The motivation behind Dave’s run fest is a sad one though, losing his young daughter to cancer inspired him to help those who might suffer in the future. Kimberley was just six years old when she was first diagnosed with cancer. Treated and cleared of the illness she had ten years of good health before developing breast cancer at the age of 18. Treatment again followed and she started a nursing course at University. She made a good start with her university education but developed a brain tumour and came home for treatment. The illness this time was severe, and Kimberley admitted herself to Ashgate Hospicecare where she spent 5 weeks before sadly losing her battle on 6 July 2009, aged just 20. Kimberley’s family have since been on a massive fund-raising drive which continues to this day. Dave is well known locally for what he does. His parents used to run a nursery at Walton, and as a result he has a love of the outdoors and runs his own landscaping business. Like many people I speak to, within two minutes of chatting you realise you both have so
Page 36
many common acquaintances and begin putting the world of Chesterfield right. Dave and his family started fundraising to support Ashgate Hospicecare and as ten years of fundraising approached, they realised that, with a push, they could burst through the £100,000 mark, which they achieved earlier in the year. Alongside Ashgate Hospicecare, Dave and his family have been supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust, an organisation that played a key role in supporting Kimberley and the family during her illness. As we speak Dave’s fundraising has raised over £30,000 for this charity and there are many more activities planned. “The thing with charity is, many of us simply don’t know who’s out there and what they do until we need them,” says Dave. “MacMillan Nurses do an amazing job, the support I’ve seen first-hand has been fantastic. “The Teenage Cancer Trust also do an amazing job. They treat teenagers, ranging in age from 13 to roughly 26, suffering from cancer at Weston Park, Sheffield, and even being well funded it’s estimated that they only get to treat 50% of those that need treatment, they simply need more help from us to get to everyone.” Dave had run at a younger age, completing the first Chesterfield Marathon at age 23, “I ran with Ron Hill one year, the man behind
www.s41local.com
the brand, he won the Boston Marathon one year and always ran in a string vest!” Dave adds. The families fundraising started 15 years ago with Dave running the Sheffield Half Marathon. This year it’s ten years since Kimberley passed away and Dave wanted to do something special. He’d listened to Chris Evans after he returned from the New York Marathon, and in 2018 Dave contacted the Teenage Cancer Trust to see if they could help him get a place at the largest marathon in the world.
“It’s great to have such a supportive family behind me, Ross, Beck, Katy and Kimberleys mum Tracey, not forgetting my Dad, Bob, these lot and the memory of Kimberley inspire me to do what I do.”
There is also a strong family link to New York. Kimberley’s was celebrating her 12th birthday on 11/09/2001 when the terrible events unfolded, from then on she always felt sad that her birthday coincided with such an event. “I did visit Ground Zero whilst I was in New York, the stories people have to tell are incredible, I chatted to a fireman who had been in a building right opposite who describes the day's events as like taking part in a movie. “I also took a ride through Central Park to see the fountain that features in the Friends opening, it’s a place that feels special in so many ways.” On the day of the New York Marathon Dave joined 52,000 other runners from every corner of the world. Things start early, as you need to get to Staten Island either on the ferry or on one of 800 buses that are laid on. Due to the numbers you start in batches of 13 to 15,000 at a time (Chesterfield's recent half marathon was approx. 1,500 runners for comparison) with 20 minutes between each batch. Dave set off at 11am.
So, I asked what’s next? “Having a rest,” Dave answered, and then went on to tell me about a spinning event that's taking place in Queens Park on 23 November, one that somehow, I ended up volunteering to do! Three hours on a spin bike, not so sure it sounds like fun to be honest. Writing after the event I can confirm that I did it together with 40 or so other supporters and have set up a just giving page as below if you’d like to support Dave via me. All funds raised go to The Teenage Cancer Trust in support of Dave’s fundraising. Hats off to Dave, Kimberley's mum Tracey and his family for all their hard work for some great local charities. A true Local Hero.
The course takes you over five bridges, past world known landmarks and finishes with a hill in Central Park. “The crowd carry you round this race. It’s like no other. I’ve done the London Marathon last year and it compares, although I buried my mum, Dorothy, on the Thursday before, so I was inspired to run to celebrate the life she’d lived.” “It was 4:25 when I crossed the finish in Central Park, it was still light, and I was full of beans.

Age Concern
Launch befriending project Words: Age Concern Images: Age Concern Age Concern Chesterfield & District were delighted to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Gordon Simmonds and Kate Caulfield to the launch of their new befriending project - Active Age. The launch took place at their base at South Lodge, Boythorpe Avenue in Chesterfield. The aim of the project is to reduce loneliness and social isolation among the over 55s by encouraging and supporting them to join some of the many community clubs and groups around the areas of Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. The service will provide an excellent compliment to the existing telephone befriending service where lonely people can receive regular calls from our trained volunteers. The new Active Age project has been funded by the National Lottery Community Fund for the next
two years. Both projects are only possible with the support of volunteers. For more information on any of the Age Concern projects or about volunteering then:
Tel: 01246 273333 E: enquiries@ageconcernchesterfield.org.uk Age Concern Chesterfield & District is a small local charity and is the chosen charity for the Mayor’s Appeal this year.

Garden Tips
December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Sometime can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet can find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2020 Potato Day (January 25th). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late spring planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxed to chit the tubers in). Pre-ordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 3rd December 2019.
