Intro Hi All,

Last night (4 Sept) I attended a gig at the City Hall in Sheffield. I went to see Heaven 17, Martyn Ware, one of their line up, was a founder member of the The Human League and has the rights to perform their first two albums 'Reproduction' and 'Travelougue'.

I caught up with some friends and met at the Pitcher & Piano for a drink before hand. Wow! Sheffield on a Saturday night, walking into a pub to the bar and buying a round, no face masks, no restrictions, no fear it appeared.

The City Hall wanted to see our COVID passes, either our cards or phone apps, but other than that and a few masks in-doors it was back to normal. The gig was fab and topped off by a couple of Heaven 17 tracks at the end - two full hours of being a teenager again! I can only hope that it's a positive sign... not the being a teenager again thing, the lack of restrictions etc. This month's edition is packed to the rafters again. Thank you to the family for testing the walk we have in this edition, if you get lost it's their fault! Another thanks to Louise for jumping to task and arranging a proof reader whilst walking with us. It really is a community based effort this. I'll say no more, other than, enjoy it - it's free! Cover Artist

Cover Art: Ian Geary Words & Images: Ian Geary

This month's cover art comes courtesy of Ian Geary, last month's crossword winner! Ian and wife, Anne, moved from Sheffield to Chesterfield just before the start of the pandemic. This has delayed Ian getting involved in the local art scene but he fully intends to contact the Chesterfield Art Club once they start meeting again. Ian was a member of the Heeley Art Club in Sheffield and has won awards at The Great Sheffield Art Show and The Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition, Buxton. In the past he has worked in watercolour and oils, subjects of the landscape and buildings of the Peak District, completed in a conventional realist manner. His current medium is acrylic and he works on what he would describe as ‘themed still life’. Here he describes the influences and themes to some of his artwork as shown. For more of Ian's work see:

Still Life with a Humming Bird An Aztec theme with the Humming Bird portrayed as an outlined figure, based on one of the ancient ‘Nazca Line’ designs found in the Nazca Desert in Southern Peru. The bird is taking nectar from Aztec Arrowhead flowers and attracting the attention of a menacing gargoyle-like carved head. The mini-drama is completed by the Sun-God like roundel looking down disapprovingly.

Still Life with a Mandarin Duck A still life with a Chinese theme. I just loved painting the Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi) seed cases.

Tribute to Tamara Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) was one of the leading painters of the Art Deco style. (Art Deco from the ‘Arts Décoratifs’ of the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925).

Here I incorporate her famous painting ‘Self-Portrait in a Green Bugatti’ (1929). I’ve made a few alterations and included some Art Deco-type buildings, based on ones such as the Chrysler building in New York, in the background, as she used to do in some of her portraits. She was working in Paris at this time, hence the reference to the Eiffel Tower.

Still Life and All That Jazz My tribute to the Staffordshire ceramic designer Clarice Cliff. I have placed her ‘Age of Jazz’ figures of the 1930s in an imaginary Jazz Club setting with Art Deco inspired surround.

A Christmas Still Life A combination of ‘The Constant Tin Soldier’ fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘The Nutcracker’.

LET'S

BMX Words: Simon Paterson Images: Libby Hawkins

BMXs are cool! I know it, you know it, everyone knows it and with our recent success at the Olympics it’s time we got to know more about the sport and the thriving BMX community in Chesterfield.

I was super excited to interview the lady behind the 50-member strong BMX Club in Chesterfield, Libby Hawkins. Libby, currently nine months pregnant and temporarily barred from all cycling by her partner, has been riding, racing, falling off and getting back on BMXs since she can remember.

Libby is the director of Tuff Riders BMX School, club manager and coach for Chesterfield BMX Racing Club, based at Ringwood Park Chesterfield and Mickley. She is a coach and runs coaching sessions for people of all ages and abilities from beginners to international standard. The Chesterfield BMX Racing Club was established in 1984, a year after the cult film BMX Bandits was released, which is mega! When Libby took over the Chesterfield BMX Racing Club, in 2013, it had just two members. Fast forward to 2021 and it has a thriving community of over 50 members competing all over the country The 2021 Tokyo games have catapulted BMX Racing back into the spotlight, which has resulted in a further 17 new riders visiting the Chesterfield Club. BMX’ing hasn’t been this popular since the days of the Raleigh Burner, which I would have swapped a sibling for as a ten-year-old boy, it’s a shame I am an only child! The Olympian and two-time world champion, Ross Cullen visits the Chesterfield club when he can, coaching and helping train potential world champs! Page 10

BMX Bicycle racing takes place on outdoor and indoor tracks throughout the country. Made from compacted dirt and tarmac, tracks are around 400 metres long and feature a large starting ramp, banked corners and a variety of jumps including table-tops, gap jumps and rhythm sections. Getting into the sport has never been easier.

“We have worked hard at the club to remove any financial barriers for people wanting to try out the sport. Anyone can come down and hire a BMX, full-face helmet, gloves and pads for just £6 for two hours. This is reduced to just £3 for members! Coaching takes place on a Saturday and we can see up to 100 kids per day, especially in the holidays." During the holidays the coaching team run outreach programmes and half-term clubs in various areas of Chesterfield including Staveley and Wingerworth. Getting children involved in the sport from a very young age is vital to the club's continued success.

“I teach kids from age two who will use balance bikes. I set up a little assault course with a little bridge and small humps for them to go over. We run these on a Tuesday night from 5pm in Mickley. Keeping the club going is far from easy and requires financial support and funding from councils, the community and local businesses. Sadly, this isn’t very forth-coming at present. “The track at Ringwood was built in 1984 and hasn’t been rebuilt properly since then. The weather has really taken its toll on it over the years. With little to no drainage and mounting

Sport maintenance costs, we are up against it and I am not sure how much longer it will last. We still have the original starting gate which is barely fit for purpose. Almost all clubs now have what's called a barrel gate - a far more modern piece of technology that we are in desperate need of. We are putting a lot of bids in at the minute to try and get some funding and we're always looking for sponsors. We have set up a GoFund me for the club and all donations are gratefully received.” Libby and the team have big plans for the park. “Our long-term goal is to turn the whole area into a big bike park that is fully inclusive for people of all ages and abilities. With a professional track for racing, a smaller one for the youngsters, and some walking and riding trials. We feel we can have a huge impact on the area, the sport and ultimately get more young people outside and active.”

Well, I don’t know about you, but I am sold on the sport of BMX. If you are stuck at the starting gate but want to know more, the club has an open day on the 26 September at Ringwood Lake Park, Ringwood Road, Brimington, Chesterfield S43 1SQ. There will be live demos, racing, music, food and fun. So, get yourselves down with the kids, your little one could be the next Beth Shriever (Tokyo 2021 – BMX Gold Medalist). The club runs sessions every Saturday 10:30am until 12:30pm and they would love for you to pop down and get involved. AN UPDATE FROM:

THE CHESTERFIELD CYCLE CAMPAIGN Words: Paul Chapman Chesterfield Cycle Campaign promotes cycle use in Chesterfield for both leisure and utility journeys and work tirelessly to ensure cycling is considered in new plans for our town. Their work to date has resulted in creation of a number of trails and safe traffic-free routes throughout the area, the route to the station using the station link for instance opens up the East and West side of town via a safe tarmac off-road link through quiet parks and cycle lanes.

By campaigning for a comprehensive network, they aim to improve conditions for cyclists so that cycling becomes a safer and more attractive option than car travel for local journeys.

FRIDAY NIGHT RIDES They also active host rides and events. Recently holding a ‘G for Ghost’ ride around the town, which took place at a social pace and, like all Friday Night Rides, ended at a pub for continued socialising. The campaign host and promote a number of rides throughout the year and details can be found on social media.

CYCLE IN STYLE A few days prior to S40 Local coming back from print the group held a 'Cycle in Style ride', with a ride out to Tapton Lock and back, again at a social pace. The riders are some of Chesterfield's best turned out cyclists... and usually no lycra in sight! Thanks go to Vintage Tea Rooms on Steeplegate for drinks before the start and Cycling UK for funding brownies from Inkerman Bakes half way through the ride.

COUCH TO 10 MILES Local social enterprise Inclusive Pedals encourages and supports new, and perhaps slightly rusty cyclists, out onto their bikes as hosts and promoters of Cycling UK's 'Couch to 10 Miles' programme. A six week series of meets where riders are accompanied starting with a few laps of Queen's Park path around the cricket pitch in week one, through to the final ride out to Hollingwood Hub and back, a distance of 10 miles. All rides are on traffic-free cycle paths or quiet roads, and aim to build rider confidence helping people get on their bike and hopefully giving them confidence to use the bike instead of the car from time to time. The final series of rides for 2021 start on Saturday 11 September, more details can be found at the website below.

COMMUNITY CYCLE RIDES Saturday 23 October see's the Community Cycle Club ride, a choice of either Queen’s Park to Hollingwood Hub and back (10 miles) or Queen’s Park to Rother Valley Country Park and back (23 miles). See below for details.

DOCTOR BIKE This year's final Dr. Bike workshop take place at Inclusive Pedals containers in Queen’s Park on Saturday 2 October 9.30am until 1pm. If you need any free checks or repairs please book a slot using the detail below.

Walk: Holymoorside Words & Images: Paul Chapman Map: Courtesy OS Open Maps We continue our series of walks and rides with a quiet 3.5 mile stroll along the side of the River Hipper to Holymoorside. You can call in at the Bull's Head for a drink half way round and top it off with an ice cream from Adam's Happy Hens. We hope you enjoy it.

Starting from the car park at Somersall Park, off Somersall Lane.

Walk back towards Somersall Lane, away from the park and cross the wooden footbridge (1) on your left before you reach the road.

Cross Somersall Lane and turn left. Turn right through a gap in the field marked with a public footpath sign, just before a driveway (2).

Head up the left-hand side of the field, continuing through two fields until you reach a narrow bridge on the left. Cross the bridge (3).

Take the path which crosses the field diagonally (4). Go through the first field boundary and head for a gate (5) at the end of the next field. Follow the path straight ahead to reach another gate (6) next to the river.

Follow the riverside path going through a gate, a squeeze stile, across a small stone bridge (7), through a squeeze stile next to the river and finally through an opening (8) to pass the tennis courts on your left to reach a metal gate.

Go through the gate and turn right, go up the lane to meet Holymoor Road.

At this point, you can turn left to go to the Bull's Head pub for a drink if you like, and return to this point or you can continue your walk by turning right.

Walk along the road until you reach Pocknedge Lane on your left – an uneven road that heads behind houses marked with a public footpath sign (9).

Page 20

Follow this lane for less than half a mile until you reach the end of the farm buildings. The path turns sharp left then rises for a few hundred yards to a metal gate by a house – go through this gate and follow the lane to reach Chatsworth Road.

Cross the road here – directly in front of you is the entrance to Adam’s Happy Hens Farm Shop, where you can choose to stop for ice creams/drinks before returning to this junction. If you are not visiting Happy Hens, turn right down Chatsworth Road.

Walk a short way until you’re almost opposite Holymoor Road. Take the footpath on the left through the stone wall (10) which skirts past the hen fields. At the end of the path, turn right over a stone stile (11) - turn left and follow the top of the field and cross over 2 more stiles .

Turn right following the public footpath sign, down the side of the field to reach a stone stile – cross this stile and walk towards the end of the next field to a wooden stile. Turn right and head across the top of this field to a stile, through the wall where a yellow footpath arrow points. Turn left and continue down this field through a squeeze style/gap next to a metal gate and then bear slightly right to cross a wooden bridge (12) in the corner of the field.

Follow the path right with the brook on your right, and the houses on your left to a path with a fence on your right hand side until you reach Chatsworth Road.

Cross the bottom of Westbrook Drive and then cross Chatsworth Road by the bollards to take the public footpath straight ahead that runs behind Brookside Glen.

Follow this along the brook to the wooden footbridge and back onto the fields. Keep walking straight forward along the edge of the two fields until you reach the farm buildings – now turn left and retrace your steps back to Somersall Lane, turning left on Somersall Lane and crossing the road back to Somersall Park car park.

Out & About

THE AVENUE COUNTRY PARK Words: Simon Paterson Images: Rachel - Avventura Coffee Co.

If you want to see an example of nature’s incredible ability to bounce back, you need look no further than a rehabilitated reserve, right on our doorstep. The Avenue Washlands in Wingerworth, was once a former coking works and one of the most contaminated sites in Europe. In 2005, the restoration began through a partnership between Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Land Trust, officially opening to the public in 2007. Now, the Avenue is becoming a community favourite for getting out of the house and back to nature. Back in the 1880s, the site was opened as a colliery but was derelict by the time of the Second World War. In 1956 it became an operational coking works, producing smokeless fuel through coal carbonisation with chemical by-products, employing 800 people at the peak of its usage. The coking works closed in 1991.

The formerly polluted waters and soil of the Avenue is now lush with grasslands – the swaying reeds framing a wide, multi-user circular path that meanders around the football pitches and ponds of the nature reserve. The path is bike, wheelchair, and pushchair friendly, easily accessible from the free car park at the top, attracting an array of visitors. For parents, it’s the perfect place to take children of any age thanks to the variety of paths and routes. For younger children, there’s plenty of pleasant short walks, the wooden caterpillar being a popular spot to stop and have a play. The wide paths are the perfect place to practice riding bikes and scooters for older children. The information and viewing boards dotted around provide lots of opportunities for outdoor learning and bring up some interesting topics for discussion.

For nature lovers and bird watchers, there’s plenty to see now that much of the wildlife has been established.

Kingfishers, skylarks and lapwings rule the skies, whilst great crested water voles and newts have made their home here. It’s fair to say there will be many photo opportunities for the keen birdwatcher. Weekends at the Avenue are buzzing with community spirit, with Wingerworth Junior Sports Association often on the playing fields and the local running club, Cannon Events, hosting their running clubs for both adults and children.

In June 2021 a fire destroyed part of a composite decking walkway, and £4,000 was quickly raised to replace and restore the affected area. The support from the local community and the rapid response to this tragedy was testament to how important the Avenue Washlands has become to everyone who visits. The site has such historical significance for the area and has played its part in employing local people and providing job security. It’s heartwarming to think that this area has been restored back to nature and is now at the centre of the local community for all the right reasons.

The Avenue Country Park can be found just off the A61 Derby Road, left at the new roundabout onto Hornbeam Drive - use the postcode S42 6GE.

Business Intro

LIFE'S FINANCIAL JOURNEY Supported by Fawbert Adams Ltd

Chartered Accountants and Financial Advisers

Fawbert Adams Limited are local independent accountants and financial advisers with a focus on life’s financial journey, whether it’s advice on how to set up and run a new business, building up family investments and pensions, selling or passing on a business, or preparing for a comfortable retirement and providing later-life financial planning.

“We are here for the complete financial journey,” explains Antony Fawbert (Managing Director). “We support all stages of that journey, but as well as accounts, tax and payroll services we are unusual amongst small firms in that we provide independent financial advice and prepare Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) and full probate and estate administration services which, until recently, only solicitors could provide. So truly supporting our clients and their families throughout life’s financial journey. Page 28

“Approaching the end of life affects everyone but few plan well for this during their lifetime and this can cause stress to those left behind. Planning properly during lifetime can ensure that your probate is a more efficient exercise and ensures the most tax-efficient legacy. For business owners your accountant is probably best placed to help with this as they are already familiar with your finances, investments and tax position.”

The firm started as John A. Roberts & Co in Chesterfield in 1947, when John Arthur Roberts – a national tax prize-winning Chartered Accountant – commenced working from home, later admitting three other partners of whom two – John and Tom – were his sons. Antony joined as a manager in 1991 and became a partner in 1997. “Advances in technology have allowed us to become a leaner and more efficient firm, offering a wider range of services and support to our clients.

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

As with most other industries, our work is less paper-based and more digital and this enables us now to concentrate as much on the present and future as we do on past events so we are much more proactive”. “My wife Alex joined the firm in 2017. She has taken over the Practice Management role which releases me back to providing proactive advice. She has also taken on the role of developing the use of cloud software for our accounts, bookkeeping, tax and payroll work and developed the “secure client portal” where clients can exchange documents with us in a private and secure area.”

“I assist people as they migrate to new systems. I support them with training and with remote assistance,” explains Alex. “I came from a military and teaching background and came straight into the world of cloud services and support.”

In 2016 the firm fully embraced the digital age and all files are now kept securely off-site in militarygrade parallel servers based in two locations in the UK. Antony explains “when Covid reared its head in 2020 and Boris asked us all to work from home we simply grabbed our laptops, locked the door and all worked from home with zero disruption to the business. The phones were diverted to a business mobile at home and any clients wishing to drop off papers either came to the office by arrangement or we drove to pick up from doorways”.

Supporting Antony with accounts and tax work are John, who joined five years ago, aged 17, and has now passed the AAT exams and is on course to complete the full Chartered qualification shortly, and Daniel who is about to complete his AAT qualification. The team is completed by Ann who joined the firm just after Antony so has 30 years’ loyal service and assists with book-keeping, payroll and reception services. As Antony explains, “with Alex concentrating on Practice Management and helping clients to adopt Quickbooks and other technology, John and Daniel are now pretty much able to run the accounts and tax compliance work together, and Ann providing client reception and other support, we have an extremely efficient and capable team which has allowed me to move to a more proactive financial consulting role”. “The pandemic has focused people’s minds,” says Alex. “Many businesses were introduced to ‘furlough’ and we’ve been able to provide support and guidance to them throughout the past 18 months. Clients have looked to us for

advice and it’s rewarding to think that we’ve supported businesses to negotiate the pandemic successfully”. Antony adds, “whilst the past year has been tough for most people it has probably been my most professionally rewarding year in terms of being able to help people in a real and proactive way, and plan for the future rather than simply working on past figures for them. It is what modern accountancy should be about”.

'Clients have looked to us for advice and it’s rewarding to think that we’ve supported businesses' Alex Fawbert Antony concludes “the pandemic has also taught me that you only live once so you should live it to the full – professionally and socially – whilst you can. It has also confirmed to me that we need to look after the next generation which is why the firm has always trained new accountants. Alex and I want to strive outside of work to develop young people too. We have had fortunate lives and careers and it is time to put something back in”. Antony and Alex live in Walton and outside of work Alex, being from a military and teaching background is a uniformed volunteer with the Chesterfield Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets, based at Wallis Barracks Chesterfield. Antony comes from a brass banding family and has played with Holymoorside Band for 12 years but is now also playing with the Ireland Colliery Chesterfield Band where the new conductor is keen to develop both a training band and a junior band. If you need financial advice, do give them a call, and as always don’t forget to mention S40 Local.

Business Update

Words: Paul Chapman

Anyone looking for a way to improve their sense of wellbeing both physically and mentally really should consider Jujitsu. “Jujitsu’s principals are fantastic in helping children improve concentration, and helping adults improve fitness, self-defence and their mental wellbeing. News and social media seem to be a constant barrage of bad news and it has never been more important to ensure we have a way of coping, and finding some quite mindful space'" says Sensei Mike. The lockdown hasn’t been easy for anyone and whilst anyone in a trade seems stressed coping with the amount of work out there, many businesses have been forced to close their doors, resulting in a very different type of stress. Mind Body Spirit (MBS) Martial Arts on Barker Lane fall in the latter category. Made worse by opening the doors on Monday 23 March 2020 to their new fully fitted out and refurnished Dojo (a place for immersive learning or meditation, traditionally in the field of martial arts). They teach Jujitsu in the old Royal Mail offices on Barker Lane after relocating to the new premises from the Community Hub at the Technique Stadium, home to Chesterfield FC. “I didn’t know that the excitement would change to dismay as I’d close the doors until July after lockdown commenced,” says Sensei Mike. “It had been extremely difficult to keep things going both financially and mentally. Although I absolutely love what I do and seeing the impact we can have shaping people’s lives both young and old, but MBS is a business and so needs to generate an income, which is difficult when your doors are closed.” Sensei Mike, like many of us, scratched his head coming to terms with things, before switching to live Zoom classes allowing him to stay in touch with his students in their homes. Page 32

“I use a company called NEST Management, they are a single point of contact for managing the business side of things, they specialise in Martial Arts and have been fantastic in wading through Government and Sport England guidelines and presenting it back in an easy to understand and actionable format. They really have helped me keep going through the pandemic, one of the really useful things we have done is create a members portal where we’ve uploaded instructional videos, Japanese language information and all sorts of useful info for members to access easily, this will be something that we will continue to build on,” explains Sensei Mike. From July 2020 MBS was able to open under Sport England Guidelines, with none contact training, social distancing, and a lot of sanitiser. Then the second lockdown hit in November forcing us to close again until December, where the younger students (under 18) were able to physically meet in the Dojo and over 18s continuing with the online sessions. Throughout the pandemic, Sensei Mike has invested in some very simple technology changes that have made a lot of difference. “Our first sessions used the internal camera on our laptop - this wasn’t brilliant, OK’ish picture and very poor sound as you’re always distant from the microphone. “We tried our mobiles which gave us better images but still had sound issues, we then invested in a decent web cam and radio mics which resulted in a step change in the quality of the video and Zoom classes we were doing. It all sounds so simple but without technology support it can often be difficult to find the right solution, but we do have a great set up now,” Sensei Mike explains. They reopened in full on 12 April 2021 after 13 months and have been doing live classes for members under 18 along with guidance from the national governing bodies. Adults were then

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

meeting, but restricted to none contact activities. July 2021 saw a move to full business as usual and normal Jujitsu contact activities. “It’s taken us 13 months to get back to where we were in March 2020. I know we’re one of the lucky ones, I really cannot express my thanks enough to those members who have stayed with us throughout lockdown. Without this support, I really doubt if the Dojo would have survived. “We’re looking forward to becoming competitive again, entering events across the country and I’ll be running the AGM for the British Jujitsu Association here at Barker Lane.

“We’ll be running events to support Gracie’s Law, a petition which calls for stiffer penalties for stalkers after the tragic death Gracie Spinks from Old Whittingham. Students will be doing a ‘Tough Mudder’ event and we’ll be selling armbands in support of the cause,” says Sensei Mike. Since reopening there has been a fantastic take up of new members at the Dojo. "It’s been great to see the faces of our younger students light up and to get some social interaction,” says Sensei Mike. The year ahead is looking positive - the new premises now in full use and proving to have been the right move, despite the difficulties.

FEEDBACK

Hi Simon, Hope you are well.

We love it when we get feedback.

The note below from Shruti at the Asian Association dropped into our mailbox the other day following their article in the Summer edition, and for me it proves that people read what we do and that being part of S40 & S41 Local works. Simon over at S41 Local and I would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who contacted them and mentioned our article. Now when's our taster meal being delivered?

All of us at the Asian Association would like to thank you for the amazing articles in S40 & S41 Local! Ever since the issue is out, we have been approached by so many people in person and over telephone, mentioning that they read about us in S40 and interested in all our activities and delicious food from Saffron Kitchen. We had food stalls in the Chesterfield Market on 8 and 10 August. Many visitors to our stall shared that they read about us in S40 & S41 Local and decided to visit us to know more. We are very happy and overwhelmed by the responses we have been getting. Thank you again for visiting our Centre and the fantastic article. Regards, Shruti Vispute

THE ANSWER TO YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN ISSUES:

LYDIA JUNE INTERIORS Words: Paul Chapman Images: Lydia June Edwards

Page 38

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

We watch the Interior Design Challenge and think, this room really could do with a makeover, the Sewing Bee makes us think, I could knock some curtains up! Then, realising that we don’t have the creativity or skills needed to effectively do either of these things, we end up staring at the paint charts in the DIY sheds and then buy some ready-made curtains from the shed next door. Well, help has just landed in S40 Local in the form of Lydia June Interiors, now based on Chatsworth Road and offering a complete interior design service from a single roll of wallpaper for the downstair loo, to a complete end to end home interior design. “I love to see people’s faces when a project is complete, whether it’s a small or a large project it’s great to know that I’ve helped create an environment in which people can look forward to spending their time. I like to think I help make a house into a home,” Lydia explains. Lydia comes from a family of entrepreneurs, her mum has been a beautician since she was 17 years old and together with Georgia, Lydia’s sister, run Honey Beauty, above Little White Dress, on Chatsworth Road (this is where Lydia is based) and her Gran runs She Fashions in town, so she’s not short of advice and company when it comes to running her own business. Lydia studied textile design at Derby University, graduating in 2018. She won a competition for an internship to work with a ‘trimmings manufacturer’ (these are all the bits and bobs you get attached to swags, curtains, interior soft furnishings etc) and this is where she fell in love with interior design. She has then worked in an established interior design showroom in Derbyshire but spurred on by her friends and family has taken the decision to go it alone. “Locally we’re very limited on where to turn for interior design advice. John Lewis has recently closed in Sheffield and many people are missing their services. “I can support people with any interior requirement. I offer a bespoke curtain and blinds service which includes an initial meeting to select the fabrics. It might be that people take away samples to live with them in their home environment for a while to help ensure we get things right. I then design, review with the customer to tweak and revise, before manufacture, and then complete the full installation including poles/tracks and all fittings necessary.

“I do offer a complete interior design service though, not just curtains. I have access to a fantastic range of furniture that can be bespoke made or bought off the shelf to compliment any scheme,” says Lydia. Flicking through curtain samples, piping and furniture, she happily demonstrated how a scheme and look is created to suit customer taste. “I like to start from a single item. I ask the customer to pick out something they really love, it might be a wallpaper design, a bit of fabric they’ve picked up, or a variety of inspirations. I then use this as the starting point, it enables me to pull a scheme together that complements and contrasts to form something beautiful. “That one thing for me is curtains - it might sound strange but the first thing I do each day is pull back my bedroom curtains - designed and made by myself, I love them. It’s a fabulous start to the day.” I was picking up that it’s very much about understanding what customers want, many won’t have a style, some will, but it’s about picking through what the customer is saying and finding that spark that helps tie down requirements, seeking out elements of what people love and from this, creating a brief that will look fab. “I often feel a bit like a peacekeeper, the wife wants one thing, and the husband wants something else but it’s great to bring these different requirements together - to reuse items that might already exist. I love to take a wander around people’s homes, it gives a feel for what I’m aiming for and allows me to pick out what’s important to people.” Lydia is also on a mission to educate the younger generation, to learn that bespoke items create individuality, are an investment that lasts and helps make a house a home. Buying items off the shelf often falls way short of expectations, being replaced over and over and never really making people feel happy. At the moment, Lydia's home visits are free and then she brings people into the studio to create the final brief where the details are confirmed. If you want to turn your house into a home and don’t know where to start, I suggest you give Lydia a call today. I was sold on the idea. T: 07877 601112 www.lydiajuneinteriors.co.uk

50 YEARS CHESTERFIELD SAMARITANS Words: Jane Tweedy (Director Chesterfield Samaritans)

This year Chesterfield Samaritans celebrate their 50th Anniversary 1971-2021. In 1953, an Anglican priest called Chad Varah founded Samaritans - the world's first crisis hotline, to provide telephone support to those contemplating suicide.

On 24 February 1971, a local resident named Ray Jones had read about the work of Samaritans and decided to try and form a local branch so he placed an advert in the Derbyshire Times about a meeting to be held at the local college. The group had to undergo training, find premises to work from and on 5 September 1971 at 3 pm, Chesterfield Samaritans took their first call from their base at Mount Zion chapel in Chesterfield. Ray Jones became the first Branch Director.

Thanks to Ray and his fellow founding listening volunteers, Chesterfield Samaritans has gone from strength to strength, moving to 2 Rose Hill and latterly at the present base at 121 Saltergate, Chesterfield. Samaritans were largely a crisis line for those experiencing feelings of suicide but today we are there to listen 24/7 for anyone who needs us.

We support our callers through the mediums of telephone, emails and will hopefully be operating on-line chat in the near future.

We have supported the local community at various times at the local soup kitchen, events such as Pride, the local markets, HMP Sudbury (prison), Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Network Rail, Chatsworth Show and many more events. Keeping the branch open during the initial Coronavirus lockdown proved a challenge with many volunteers self-Isolating or shielding but we managed to provide a normal service due to volunteers going the extra mile. We also supported Page 42

the NHS, and key workers on a dedicated support line, manned by volunteers from home, a new, innovative way of answering calls during the lockdown.

SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER The Samaritans Picnic at Chatsworth House where we'd love to see you. See our website for details: samaritans.org/branches/chesterfield Samaritans were able to maintain a 24/7 service all through the pandemic. During 2019 volunteers responded to 3.3 million telephone calls, 400,000 emails, 1,100 letters and 23,000 face to face callers.

We have a Charity Shop situated on West Bars. Being self-funding, we rely on our shop and local donations to enable us to keep supporting our local community. We would like to thank the following for nominating us as their ‘Charity for 2021’ - The Mayor of Chesterfield, The East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and Fred's Haberdashery in Chesterfield. We would also like to thank our Patron, the Duchess of Cavendish for her support.

We have various plans to celebrate our 50 years as a branch, a recent BBQ at 121 Saltergate took place, in August there was an 'open day’ at our shop and we supported Pride on Sunday 22 August.

Right now we are seeking volunteers to help with tasks in our charity shop. If you have some spare time and would like to get involved please call our shop direct on 01246 229459.

DISHY DOCTORS A FEW DAYS IN THE LIFE OF A PATIENT ON A NHS WARD Words: Linda Images: Adobe Stock Images

Well, there were some dishy doctors I can tell you. Firstly, the anaesthetist, brilliant man who had climbed Everest, fit as a butcher's dog. Next came the discharge nurse sitting there at the end of the bed, appeared out of nowhere, told me what I needed to know and then vanished in the mist. Page 46

But I will start from the beginning, and it doesn’t get much scarier…. Goes from a routine smear, to a scan, to a biopsy which is done in a most undignified manner but at the end of the day the result was obtained. Maybe

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

it's just part of me, or maybe it's a polyp, or maybe its the dreaded and it was!!! Saw a lovely surgeon who told me I could have a full hysterectomy on Friday so I opted for that slot. Sent for pre-med assessment day before the op, blood pressure through the roof. Day of operation saw the registrar, really nice young woman, beautiful shiny long dark black hair with a full make-up job, taking notes as we spoke, so full of energy and enthusiasm. In the area set aside for operations, names written on a board, my slot number 3. Everyone nervous, some crying, but procedures are procedures and everyone has to go through the door at some point. Got to the waiting area, and the only thing I could think about was that I had left my knickers on! Not a big deal I was told, got bags for everything down here love, which put me at ease. Came round from the operation and was taken to the ward. Can’t remember much about the day and maybe that’s a good thing. Picked up on all the gossip and characters on the ward the following day. Annie on the far side of the ward nearest the door had come in from a nursing home with her face black and blue clutching a teddy bear. Fallen out of a nursing home bed because someone had forgotten to put the side up. Next to her was Nellie, a lady in her eighties who slept most of the day. On the same side as me, nearest the door, was a couple who were swearing and arguing most of the time, as well as other shenanigans. Suddenly the curtains would be closed by her partner, quietness reigned, but the staff nurse was having none of it and whipped them back with some ferocity. Everyone seemed to have a temperature the following day which apparently is called “trauma fever” or were sick, me included. Must be the MRSA virus I thought, that’s it the ward will be shut, but nothing of the sort occurred. Middle of the night, just cat napped, someone walking round and then stood at the bottom of the bed. Oh no! Can they see up my nightdress I thought, then consoled myself by thinking don’t worry you have got your knickers on girl! The mind boggled. Photocopier going, staff nurse walking around surreptitiously, probably with results, putting them secretly in the folders at the end of each bed. Annie is now shouting, “Help, help, leave me alone, I am telling my daughter you are taking my money and give me my teddy bear back”. These outbursts kept me going in the middle of the night. Looked in the gallery on my phone at my lovely dog and bedroom I would be going home to.

Bonded with the lady across the ward from me, we helped one another in times of needs. New patient in the bed at the side of me, came in with her own stash of morphine, diazepam and temazepam which the staff nurse told her they needed to be put under lock and key. I thought poor woman she must be addicted to prescription drugs or her husband is a drugs baron. Came home to my lovely family who I couldn’t have done without. Fantastic husband and daughter who are stars in every sense. My grandsons saying, “Well when can I see them, I am desperate”. He’s as good looking as you have ever seen with a personality to match. Just seen the other grandchildren, granddaughter who is beautiful inside and out and my other grandson who is a fantastic footballer with a window sill full of trophies. Scoobie, my Lhasa Apso, is laid next to the fan to keep himself cool, who has been sleeping on the landing and has one eye either side of the upright on the bannister rail as he looks for us. I have now taken to wearing Bridget Jones large knickers (but don’t tell anyone), not a pretty sight as the itsy bitsy ones dig in where they are not supposed to. My daughter suggested I might need a larger size, not on your nelly it would mean that me and the best husband in the world could get in them together. Asked if he would be a cross dresser for the day to make me laugh wearing Bridget's Blummers but he categorically drew the line at that!! Well, it has been quite a journey, but I am being looked after better than royalty. How lucky am I? We are all so fortunate to have a wonderful Health Service. SO GLAD TO BE HOME! A true account of my stay in hospital and my home which I hope you find interesting and amusing ... if only a little. Thanks to Linda for sending in her account of what must have been a testing journey. It's a lovely way in which to thank our NHS staff at Callow for the fantastic job they do. Thank you NHS.

PATIENT HUB Words & Images: Press Release A new system that will give Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s patients more flexibility to control their own appointments is being relaunched following a successful pilot at the end of 2020. Seven specialties have been made live with a full rollout expected to all 50 specialties by the end of June. Patient Hub is now live and has been in use since November 2020, the app allows patients to check appointments on a phone, tablet or desktop. Once the rollout is complete, patients will be able to request a call back from the booked admission team if you want to discuss aspects of an appointment, including rearranging or cancelling to give more control and choice. Director of ICT and Patient Records, Ian Hazel, said: “We’re pleased with how the launch went last year and can see that it will make a big difference to

Page 48

the patient experience before they even enter the building. It will provide more choice, flexibility and accessibility to their appointment, making it easier for patients to contact the hospital and rearrange an appointment if there is a problem.

“All patients with a registered mobile phone number or email address have access to this improved service. A text message will be sent to the individual that includes asking you to click through to patienthub.chesterfieldroyal.nhs.uk. “It’s all very straightforward and is a system that you will be invited to join. You will be able to view and accept an appointment on your own mobile device; making it less stressful, with the benefit of eliminating the need to print hundreds of thousands of letters each year.”

The link includes reference to your appointment, the clinic and time, so you know it's a genuine email, you will also recognise the link ‘patienthub.chesterfieldroyal.nhs.uk’ from our hospital. Further developments include the ’I’ve Arrived’ module; a new feature of Patient Hub introduced in response to COVID-19 to support social distancing with a virtual queuing system. I’ve Arrived is used for face-to-face appointments and allows patients to feel safe, and remain outside or in car parks until they are actually required to attend their appointment, removing risks of overcrowded waiting areas. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH YOUR INVESTMENTS Mark Jones, Managing Director of Jones & Co.

F

irst off, we’d like to reiterate that we’re all back in the Jones & Co office on Glumangate! We made a return to the office back in April and it was a big milestone for us, as well as many other local businesses. Over the last couple of months, we’ve welcomed several clients for face-to-face meetings, something we’ve missed very much. It’s great to be able to see people in person again and, whilst we will continue to adhere to current social distancing guidelines and offer online consultations, there is a real sense of optimism and enthusiasm for a more ‘normal’ future. This optimism and enthusiasm are shared by the entire Jones & Co team and our clients for whom we have delivered an overwhelming amount of success in relation to individual investment portfolios and wealth management, in spite of the pandemic. Contrary to popular belief, the last 12 months have been profitable for millions of global investors, Jones & Co clients included.

It’s vital that we do our bit to support infrastructure growth and help the economy to prosper…and “every little helps” as a famous supermarket once said!

Here at Jones & Co, we’re ready and waiting to help you to maximise your money and be financially ready for anything. We will do this with bespoke financial advice that addresses all of your individual wants and needs. Arrange your FREE consultation today and let’s get started. Email: admin@ifajonesandco.uk, call 01246 550521 or simply pop into our offices on Glumangate in Chesterfield. We look forward to seeing you!

Alongside the goal of continuing and building on this level of success, it’s important to note that setting up an investment portfolio, if you don’t already have one, will enable you to make a valuable contribution to the rebuilding of the UK economy. As you are probably well aware, there is a huge amount of sovereign debt that we need to start paying back: £2.2 trillion* to be exact. We all have a part to play in that payback. 714,000 UK businesses** took advantage of the Government furlough scheme, for example, in order to continue to employ staff and be in with a chance of re-opening and resuming normal activity. What will now support those businesses to get back up and running AND help to repay the national debt is the creation of growth and opportunities; you can play a key role in that effort by investing.

Interest rates continue to be non-existent but sticking your money under the bed or keeping it as cash is not necessarily the best plan.

Mark Jones is Managing Director of Jones & Co Independent Financial Advice.

Risk warnings: Pensions and investments go up or down in value and on encashment you could potentially get back less than originally invested. Brookfield News

BROOKFIELD NEWS Edited by Aisling Rippin from the Brookfield Journalism Group

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award

Promming!

In July, 25 Year 11 students from Brookfield were able to complete their Duke of Edinburgh expedition, after a year’s delay due to COVID. Always the most anticipated part of the Award, the expedition requires participants to complete two consecutive days of walking. We had to navigate the route using an OS map and a compass: with no google maps, taking us out of our comfort zone. Through rain or shine, snow or hail (any weather that can possibly be thrown at us), the challenge allows us to be independent, from both parents and technology, for the weekend.

The class of 2021 finally got to finish Year 11 and Year 13 in style! After almost two years with few social events taking place, we ended our time at Brookfield with fantastic Prom nights on successive nights. Set in the idyllic Ringwood Hall grounds, the events marked the conclusion of two tumultuous years, filled with the uncertainty of GCSE and A level exams and seemingly endless restrictions.

Instead, the groups walked from Brookfield School each day, illustrating just how beautiful the countryside in our immediate vicinity is. Walking around 35km in total (with only a few instances of adding extra distance due to map reading issues!), we found the days still provided a challenge, allowing us to push our boundaries - navigating, carrying emergency equipment and a lot of food and water.

mock-tail and sit down meal, and between courses were able to go outside, taking photographs and catching up with each other and members of staff.

Usually the expedition would involve carrying all necessary equipment to camp overnight in the Peak District, cooking on a stove in the evening. However, due to COVID restrictions this was unable to take place.

Being able to complete the Award, after many delays and uncertainties, felt like a step towards normality and a welcome contrast to lockdown. Page 52

In front of the manor house an assortment of vehicles - ranging from a vintage VW campervan to an off-road 4x4 - dropped off students who looked ready to walk along a red carpet. Year 13 enjoyed a buffet, awards and dancing in the hotel, whilst Year 11, the following evening, made their way down a fairytale pathway to the spacious marquee that housed their Prom. Students enjoyed a

As night fell the setting started to darken and the gardens came alive with fairy lights and lanterns providing a tranquil escape, with only a faint thump of the music from the disco audible. Inside was a different story, alive with music and dancing.

While some students were unable to enjoy the events because of COVID isolation, for most it was an evening bursting with excitement.

Thanks to Heads of Year – Mr McIntyre and Ms Williams - the prom provided a celebration to mark the end of an eventful two years filled with uncertainties, and the start of the next part of our education.

What values do you put on a grade 4 in GCSE Maths or English? Over the last two years we have seen changes to the ways that GCSE grades were arrived at. The grades for this year in August were done by teacher assessment based on students’ performances throughout the GCSE course work and backed up by academic evidence. Working hard and cramming for the exams or mocks exam grades wasn’t enough! These changes may continue or alter again, but what is very clear is that students need to demonstrate their full potential and ability levels on the GCSE course consistently and show good progress throughout the two years. Without a grade four or above in maths and English the following routes in life are effectively closed to your child… University degree courses, Degree apprenticeships, Practical apprenticeships and many better paid jobs. All these require a minimum of a grade four in both maths and English. We have seen significant grade inflation this year as a result of the changes. In all future options open to your child, competition is increasing. So what has this to do with Kip? Our track record in GCSE grade improvement is exceptional but more importantly we can

improve the performance of our students in maths and English almost immediately by removing some of the barriers they have found in their learning. It may be a particular maths topic or not being very good at answering questions or essays in English. If your child is starting GCSEs this year, and they are at risk of not achieving more than a grade four, then call us now and ensure their future options remain open. Or it may be that they want to achieve the grade eight or nine that puts them firmly onto the next step in their education. One student came to us six years ago needing a grade four in maths (a C grade in those days!) to go onto a practical apprenticeship. He worked with us and achieved his grade four, completed the apprenticeship and is now working in a company and being fast tracked to take on more responsibility and salary. He is now saving for a house. All of this was possible because he got a grade four. Without it he would have struggled. You can bet he puts a high value on his grade four as it has set him up for life! So if your child is embarking on GCSEs this year, put a value on their future and give them the start they want in life: OPTIONS TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY WANT TO DO! Chesterfield Operatic Society Meet Again As a local amateur dramatics group, Chesterfield Operatic Society have been desperate to get back together. One month before Carousel was due to be performed at the Pomegranate Theatre, the nation went into lockdown and the society haven’t been able to have an in-person meeting since. Covid-19 has affected so many and the performing arts industry has been hit in a big way. The society are now looking forward to bringing their musicals back to the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield. “As a society with over 60 members, we have missed being able to get together and do what we love. FOOTBALL FOR FOODBANKS Text: Jack Emmens

My name is Jack and I'm currently setting up a Chesterfield branch of Football for Foodbanks (FFF) with my other half Amy Calpin. We are both teachers, Chesterfield-born and live in Walton (S40).

It's clear that foodbanks have become a necessity for many over the last couple of years and we want to support them as they continue to benefit the local community. How do we do that? In the most basic terms, we play football.

From September onwards, we will be hosting matches across Chesterfield in both our Men's division (led by me) and our Women and Gender Minorities Division (led by Amy). We simply need people to play football with us, pay their subs and raise money for local foodbanks.

We currently run through Facebook, both divisions can be found by searching for 'Football for Foodbanks Chesterfield'. Sign up posts will go live on the group two days before a match, all you have to do is sign up, pay £4, play football and then go home having done something good for your community and had a bit of exercise. We charge £4 because we aim to pool £1 from each fee for the foodbank shop (this may vary depending on how much it costs to hire the pitches).

Foodbanks group. Amy, on the other hand, was a goalkeeper with Chesterfield Ladies until her late teens. The supportive and friendly ethos of FFF in Sheffield has been brilliant for both of us and we can't wait to see it have a similar affect on the Chesterfield residents who join us.

Football for Foodbanks was originally set up in Sheffield but has since spawned another successful branch in Manchester. We are aiming to emulate that success in Chesterfield.

• What we need right now is players.

• The more people sign up to play, the more matches we can host. • The more matches we host, the more money we raise. • The more money we raise, the more we can donate to the foodbanks. Football for Foodbanks Chesterfield

We're open to players of all abilities. I've always lacked the confidence to play with a proper team but loved playing with the Sheffield Football for Page 58

KEEPING THE HARMONY VIRTUALLY A-LIVE!!

WANT TO SING WITH MINERVA?

MINERVA Chorus was founded in 2015 when six friends began singing for pleasure and to develop technique. Within months the chorus had grown and, with the support of two experienced musical directors, established a varied repertoire of unaccompanied songs which demonstrated the well-blended harmony sound we set out to achieve.

After moving rehearsals online, and the group learning new IT skills for singing muted on Zoom, from September they are delighted to be able to make plans to return safely to physical rehearsals and engage with audiences at forthcoming live events.

SHOP IN STYLE AT THE CHESTERFIELD 1940S MARKET Words: Press Release Residents and visitors to Chesterfield can enjoy themselves during half term as the annual 1940s market returns for 2021. Minerva always welcomes interest from women who love singing. There is no requirement to read music, sheet copies are provided, and members also learn through audio learning tracks. To find out more about Minerva have a look at the website where you can also view YouTube clips of some of the repertoire. CAN WE SING FOR YOU? Garden Tips

AUTUMN GARDENING TIPS Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.

When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids some shaping while they are dormant. Remember that next years fruit will appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants.

Page 62

When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.

Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants.

Keep harvesting runner and French beans, many vegetables (including courgettes) will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. There comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few). Now is a good time to think about ordering new fruit trees and moving existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm.

Keep on top of tidying jobs but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year. Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves the Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years! ‘I hadn't sung in a choir since I was at school, so I was full of trepidation. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and I realised that you don't have to be Maria Callas to sing with a choir. I practice when I'm cooking or doing the ironing. I have been a member of Aurora for 12 years and love performing at our concerts. Audiences are so appreciative and I think we sound quite good’.

'I wanted to meet people and I wanted to sing and I thought the best way of doing that was to join a choir. I've made lots of friends from different walks of life and the camaraderie is very good. It doesn't matter what's gone on that day, you start singing and it's all forgotten for a couple of hours. I find singing very therapeutic. I've got chronic asthma and my lung function has improved since I've been singing regularly' Jayne joined Aurora in 2015.

Welcome back Spireites, it's the start of the new football season and unless you've been living under a rock for the last few months, then you can't fail to have noticed the excitement building around the club again for the new campaign. Let me cut to the chase. Promotion, that's what we all want, plain and simple! As we made it to the playoffs last season resulting from the massive turnaround by the new owners and manager, I'm hungry for more and you know what, I can see us getting it, I really can! This is James Rowe's first start to a Spireite season including the pre-season stage and he's not been messing about since close of play last season. There have already been many changes at the club including a new assistant manager and a few new signings, including a couple of keepers. Fundamentally the club continues to give Rowe their full backing to lay down the tracks in shaping his master plan, to eventually start his first football league campaign in League 2. Given what James achieved last season in his first six months for us, imagine a full season with him at the helm. I feel a few bets have been placed among the fans for winning the league outright this time around and I can't blame them. Let's recap on events since the final whistle at the Notts County game back in June, the play-off game that ended our 2020/21 season. Ernie Moss We start with the sad news that club legend Ernie Moss passed away in July. Ernie was given a proud CFC send-off in August. His coffin was driven around the ground on a final emotional lap, on route to his funeral service. Standing at the ground it was very moving for all us fans and staff saying goodbye to the greatest ever Chesterfield FC goal scorer. He won't be forgotten! The Friendlies The Spireites played six friendly games of which they won 5, including away at their annual Matlock Town and Alfreton Town pre-season fixtures. Both at Matlock (where Ernie managed and

won the Derbyshire Senior Cup with Matlock Town in 2004) and at the home game against Bradford there was a minute's remembrance/applause before the kick-off by the teams and the fans, to celebrate and pay tribute to Ernie. Chesterfields only defeat came against Ernie's old club Port Vale where the Spireites fell to a single goal at the Technique Stadium. New signings James has brought in many players, including another 2 goalkeepers (Scott Loach – from Barnet) (Melvin Minter – Harrogate Town) on free transfers. The talk of the town however has clearly been our new striker Tshimanga, signing on a 3-year deal. Who, with Danny Rowe and Asante to play alongside when he returns from injury, will be an unstoppable force! Tshimanga can only be described as a mouth-watering signing of epic proportions. A superb in form striker. He had already banged in 40 odd goals in 2 seasons for his previous club Boreham Woods, so he has some clout behind him and at just 24 years of age, there's more to come. Tshimanga started in the opening match of the league campaign against Aldershot Town and also got onto the score sheet after a penalty slotted home by Danny Rowe, which ended 2-0 to the blues. This took us to 5th in the table after the first game, with a clean sheet. And to be honest, with James Rowe in charge and the players clearly playing for him, I would be amazed if we dropped into the bottom half of the table this time around. This is why I believe CFC, after spending a good few seasons in it, are competing in their final season in the National League. As Del Boy once said “if you don't have a dream, then how you gonna have a dream come true?” Amen to that. Oh, and if you go to the games or listen on the club's new free online app “1866 Sport” to all live matchday commentary, there's only one thing to say...come on You Blues!
