HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM THE TEAM AT S40 LOCAL
Cover Illustration
Kelly Sheldon @ 13 Bends Design
Hello and welcome to Christmas!
We have a bumper edition this month, loads to read, lots going on, some fabulous contributions, new businesses to meet and all the usual stuff.
Christmas is now just a few weeks away and we've included Part 2 of the Gift Guide, suggestions for gifts that you can purchase locally, many made locally, and all served with a smile, as the small business owners do there bit to spread some festive joy!
We'll be taking a longer break over Christmas and New Year, back in the middle of January sometime so look out for us then.
Can I say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has run an advert, contributed an article, delivered a magazine, sent me a classified advert, told me about their event, proof read, mentioned S40 Local when you've called or visited an advertiser, raised an invoice, drawn a cartoon, taken a photo and sent it, tagged or mentioned S40 Local on social media, or simply, made a cuppa and sat down to read what I do. Without you there would be no S40 Local and I salute you, stay in touch, we love to hear from you and please keep mentioning us - it does help keep us going.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a fabulous New year. Here's to 2022, being a bit less crazy.

Take a walk around Chesterfield and seek out all the advent windows
Words: Paul Chapman
Image: Adobe Stock
Page 16 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Christmas
How many of us remember staring into shop windows as a youngster at Christmas?
Perhaps it all sounds a bit overly romantic and Christmas was never like that? Truth is though, before the department stores started competing for the sweetest, overly produced, cinematic TV adverts accompanied with artists covering (some might say destroying) classic tracks in a heartfelt Christmassy way, I really do think that’s what we did as kids.
I can recall Christmas Shop window displays being a thing of joy, standing in the darkening street staring into well lit windows filled with toys, books, games and all sorts of wonders that I hoped might end up under the tree!
Today screens win the competition for our attention and department stores often get our purchases with a mouse click. The internet is searched and large corporations, with vast warehouses, ship out box after box.
It doesn’t have to be like that, our local shops have wonderful gifts. Chesterfield has a great range of small independent businesses, hopefully by now, reading S40 & S41 Local you’ll be picking up on that, and they stock a range of gifts that rival any vast grey warehouse. The thing is you’ll need to go visit them or at least search for their individual websites.
To tempt us out, and make a visit to the town centre a bit of an event and fun for children, Chesterfield's retailers and businesses in town and close by are creating an Advent Window Trail. Businesses will be using the numbers 1 to 24, the days on an advent calendar and displaying them in their Christmas window displays.
Why not wrap up and see how many you can find, some will be easy, some business owners are sneakier and hide away the numbers… a great way to ensure you linger and take in all the display. The shops taking part are in the town centre, the Shambles, Vicar Lane, The Pavements and some a little further spread, Chatsworth Road etc.
Laura Jo from Adorn Jewellers in The Shambles, takes an active role in helping bring the town’s independent businesses together. laura Jo says, “Christmas in Chesterfield is magical. Our beautiful town has the perfect mix of quirky independent shops, a wonderful market and the larger multiple retailers. It’s wonderful that we can enjoy a fabulous shopping experience, choosing thoughtful presents, posting hand picked cards and lingering over a hot chocolate… after all, Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a whole adventure."
Last year Paperstarlights supported the advent window trail by installing fabulous star lights in many of the businesses, looking for stars might help give you a clue to the shops taking part. Look out for the stars and visit their website to purchase your own and help light up the front windows of homes across Chesterfield.
The displays are being planned out as I type and by the time this copy drops through your letter box most of them will be shining bright and awaiting your undivided attention.
And with so many independent cafes and restaurants opening up, you can break up the advent trail with lunch or a hot chocolate whilst you rest your feet. Please do all you can to support our independent businesses and enjoy your day.

A Ginger Christmas
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Sally Ginger Illustrations
www.sallyandersonillustration.com
Here at S40 Local we love everything that Sally Anderson from Sally Ginger Illustration does, remember her stripped back snow covered tree on our cover last December?
Well Sally has been in touch about a couple of great local projects she's been involved in, one which gets you outdoors in the winter sun (hopefully...) with the kids.
Chatsworth: Great Elf Escape
"I was fortunate enough to be approached by Chatsworth to produce ten illustrations for the Great Elf Escape, a children's trail to be held in the Chatsworth garden. Given last year's success of the spectacular light display in the garden at night, Chatsworth wanted an activity for families during the day that was still Christmassy and interactive. Which is where I came in!
"I was invited to have a look around the proposed trail and produce illustrations of the elves carrying out duties and helping the gardeners during this busy time. Chatsworth holds a special place in my heart as I am sure it does to a lot of local people of Chesterfield, and especially at Christmas - we always visit the house and garden so I obviously jumped at this amazing opportunity. A few midnight doodles and several visits later, the elves were done and ready to be viewed via a QR code trail around the garden. I love my job - especially at this time of year, Father Christmas even makes an appearance in his sleigh!"
www.chatsworth.org/events/christmas-in-thegarden
Candlelight Tales
Sally has also worked on a book with a local Author from Hasland, Janet Wilkinson "Janet approached me after seeing one of my illustrations, she has written lots of children's stories and poems with her late husband. Unfortunately he passed away and Janet decided to revisit her writing in lock down. For a lot of people on their own, lockdown was hard and solitary, but Janet focused her mind and began writing again. Her husband had previously drawn the illustrations for her stories so when she approached me to see if I would illustrate some of them I said yes. It was a few to start with, but then she secured a publishing contract and the book was published on the 25 November, called 'Candlelight Tales', it's a collection of ten short stories for children. Very cute and traditional and was lovely to work on!
www.olympiapublishers.com/books/ candlelight-tales
You can also see Sally's illustrations on the windows of Oculi and the Neonatal unit. In her spare time Sally is teaching adult learners locally, one day a week (spaces are available) which keeps her very busy but LOVING IT!
In the run up to Christmas Sally will be producing bespoke family and pet portraits, something a bit different for those hard to buy for people! Details and examples are on her website www. sallyandersonillustration.com or you can email on work.sallyanderson@gmail.com with enquiries.

If you like Sally's work why not visit her online shop where you'll find a selection of individual cards for all events and people, not just Christmas. Her range of illustrated Christmas cards includes 'Merry Christmas from Chesterfield' shown above which is set to be a quick seller this year. Her cards can also be found on the shelves at Libby's, Chatsworth Road.

Kelly Sheldon 13 Bends Design
Text: Paul Chapman
Images: Kelly Sheldon (13 Bends Design)
This month’s cover art is from Kelly Sheldon our regular cartoonist. Kelly describes herself as someone who sits in her cupboard working, listening to podcasts and fitting work around her young family. I’ve worked with Kelly for a number of years, she previously helped me with advert design and layout before leaving to concentrate on her business 13 Bends Design. Kelly suffers from Usher Syndrome, a condition that affects her eyesight which may deteriorate over the years. “I wanted to work for myself as it gave me the independence I need to ensure I don’t end up suffering when I work,” says Kelly.
“It also allows me to work within constraints I set myself. Some jobs I’ve done have put me in situations I felt uncomfortable with, manual elements I struggle with so working for myself has been fab,” explains Kelly. “It’s important that I continue to work and contribute to the family.”
Kelly loves working with local Brampton start ups, but work isn’t restricted to just businesses, she’s been involved in supporting many local community groups and is looking at how she can contribute more. “I work with a disability, and I'd love to offer support and guidance into the world of design, showing others that might be struggling with confidence that there are ways into work.”
“My community work has involved the recent Spadgerfest designs,
Monkey Park's logos and flyers, Wastenot Café menus and Charlies Place, a fabulous animal sanctuary run by Will and Claire. If you don’t know about this place, you should definitely check it out … the 'Hogspital' is fab!”
Kelly trained as a cartoonist before starting Graphic Design and she offers services that cover, logo design, cartoons, illustration, high quality print. Many of her clients are local, you’ll pass her logo designs every day. All this from a Mum of two who loves to spend as much time with them as she can.
Businesses she's worked with include, start up Vegged (Sheffield Road), Ingman’s Cobblers, Brampton Brewery, Meadowfresh, Oculi Opticians, Peak Knives and Sheldon Guitar Repairs (her husband Chris’s business) to name a few. Talk to any of her clients and they’ll tell you how supportive Kelly is, discussing jobs outside of the usual 9 to 5, the only time many people can meet to move things forward, people just like her, mixing work and family.
Outside of her design cupboard you’ll find Kelly singing with Chris, gigging as The Shambles.
I’d like to say a huge thanks to Kelly for the cartoons and covers (she did edition 102 when we reached ten years old) and also for generally being so supportive of S40 Local I still remember her positivity when I started out looking for print prices 13 years ago!

We can all feel a bit down on our home from time to time, but I actually love my home town and the memories Created. This got me thinking about why I love it here, what is it I like?
I started flicking through my pictures and set about finding six images to sum up how I feel. In the end I chose the four shown.
Family: The picture below was taken a few years ago on a lockdown walk, the sun descending and myself and the kids, almost silhouettes against the night sky. That sky features a lot in my pictures, we do a good sunset in the west of Chesterfield.
The Spire: At the top of the opposite page, represents home, the place we return to at the end of the day This picture isn't mine it's an Abode Stock image, and I love the way it connects the place we call home with the Peak District beyond.
Harewood Road: I love this strip of tarmac, the way it winds away from Holymoorside up onto Beeley Moor is fabulous. A few bridleways thread out from the road and if you walk along the one that runs from Harewood Road to Loads Road you are treated to a fabulous view of the Spire whilst feeling like you're hundreds of miles away.
The Peak District: The final pic is the Mam Tor ridge and represents how close we are to the Peak District, I love the outdoors and having the Peak District on our doorstep.
If I was to add two more pictures they'd be Linacre - I spend so much time there it feels like my backyard. Lastly, my daughter suggested Chesterfield's independent shops, Tallbird Records and Curious Goods are her faves.
What is it about Chesterfield that you love?

I’ll give you one guess what Ginners Bar, the latest edition to Chesterfield town centres thriving night-life scene sells? That’s right, gin! And, what a selection, with over 40 to choose from!
Ginners Bar is the kind of place you take pictures of yourself in and post them on Instagram because it’s cool, and by association, so are you! The décor is rustic with the perfect blend of exposed metal and wood throughout, yet somehow manages to create that homely, warm feeling you have when you finally settle down with a glass of your chosen tipple after a hard day.
Ginners is the brainchild of lifelong Cestrefeldian, Jon Burton. I was lucky enough to catch-up with him to sample the goods, I mean interview him!
Jon, tell me a bit about Ginners, please?
"We are (Ginners) a new gin bar in the town centre. You’d be forgiven for assuming we named it after the drink, but we called the bar Ginners in remembrance of my late step dad Ginner who was amazing. We have a wide selection of over 40 premium gins and tonics plus a range of spirits; including rums, vodkas, whiskeys, beers and ciders. So, we are a new bar in town, a nice friendly place with a wide choice of drinks at a reasonable price."
Have you always wanted to open a gin bar, has this been on your long-term goal list for some time?
"Well, initially I was thinking of a micro-pub in a nice quiet village in or around the Peak District, somewhere like Holymoorside. I’ve been keeping a lookout for some time for any opportunities that came up and this bar became available. It was opened briefly by the previous owners as a micropub so It was easy to convert it into a gin bar."
Did you know much about gin before you opened a gin bar, if not I can’t imagine the research was a chore?
"If I'm honest I didn’t. I had only tried a couple of gins previously and didn’t really like it. So, naturally, not liking gin, I thought I better open a gin bar! But since doing my research I have grown to love gin, I am a big fan of fruit gins. With gin it’s about finding the right one for you, there is a gin for everyone and here we have a massive choice, so pop in and get trying, sensibly of course."
At this point I thought I had better sample the goods. Jon asked me a few questions about my pallet before recommending a cloudy lemon gin by Lonewolf with a plain tonic. I drank it. All of it. It was good. I’ll be back
Page 32 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Business Intro
Where do you see Ginners slotting into the Chesterfield high street?
"I see it as more of an early bar, having said that we had people coming in right up until midnight sampling the gins and beers that we do. Being situated opposite the Winding Wheel it’s the perfect spot for a pre or post show drink. It’s the kind of bar you pop into after work with your colleagues for a quick drink before the commute home, or take someone on a first or 100th date. It’s a bar for anyone on any occasion and I can’t wait to meet all of your lovely readers."
Ginners is a wonderful edition to Stephenson’s Place and I have no doubt that it will be here for many years to come. So, pop down say ‘ey-up’ to Jon and post some photos on Instagram, you know you want to.

COMMUNITY APPEAL 2021 Ideal Flooring
Words & Images: Paul Chapman
For the last few years Kevin and the team at Ideal Flooring have lent their support to a local community Christmas appeal.
This year they are supporting ‘Mission Christmas – Cash for Kids’ being run by Hallam FM radio station.
Mission Christmas asks people to buy an extra gift for Mission Christmas if they can, and they’ll make sure that it gets to a disadvantaged child, so they'll wake up to something under the tree on Christmas morning. All gifts should be new and unwrapped, and can be taken to drop-off points across the region, our nearest being Ideal Flooring at 362 Chatsworth Road, just behind the Crown Decorating Centre. There’s plenty of parking so you can just pull up outside and drop off your presents.
“I like to do something each year to support those less fortunate and the Mission Christmas appeal is such a great cause,” says Kevin, owner of Ideal Flooring.
“It’s not asking much of us all to purchase an extra gift, the charities that benefit are all local and it’s lovely to think that through us simply having a box in the showroom we can support young children.”
Pictured below is Kevin, Brad, Callum and Harry with their Mission Christmas collection box. If you can spare a gift, please drop it off before Monday 20 December so they can be collected and delivered in time for Christmas.

The Chesterfield Vocal Studio
Words: Simon Paterson
Images: Laura Alsop
From stadium performances, The Royal Albert Hall to recording her own album, Laura Alsop has done it all. Now, armed with a plethora of qualifications and a passion for teaching, Laura has launched the Chesterfield Vocal Studio.
The Chesterfield Vocal Studio combines Laura’s passion for singing, her talent for teaching and a state of the art technical set-up. Music is my thing, so when Laura invited me down to the studio, I jumped at the chance.
Upon entering the studio, you can see the amount of work, expense and love that has gone into it from the off. It’s the kind of place you’d imagine Beyonce recording her next album. The décor is modern, clean, professional yet welcoming and comfortable. Laura’s partner Richard has to be credited for this amazing set up, which was two years in the making! He has a wealth of experience as a musical equipment technician and is a fulltime electrician. What he doesn’t know about tech, isn’t worth knowing!
All this tech and Laura’s array of qualifications means The Chesterfield Vocal Studio offer a variety of services:
Vocal coaching
Vocal diagnosis
Performance coaching
Recording studio sessions
Audition preparation
Vocal health and problem correction
Show reel creation
Singing exams and qualifications
“I have worked hard to obtain the relevant and required qualifications to register the Chesterfield Vocal Studio as an official centre for educational learning. This means my students can obtain professional singing qualifications, which I am super happy about. We offer these in person and remotely as well,” says Laura.
I asked Laura, who is vocal coaching for?
“It is for anyone who likes to sing and wants to improve, from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. I can help experienced performers manage their vocal health, utilising safe vocal techniques. Children as young as five can come to the studio and sing songs like the wheels on the bus, learn to count rhythm and have fun!"
Tell me about the kit you have you in here?
"We have the teaching space and the recording studio. The recording studio is a fully equipped, soundproofed vocal studio. We cater for a variety of acts from solo performers to small bands. Not only do we have the audio recording facilities, but we also have visual. This means we can create showreels or audition tapes. All our lessons are fully recorded and sent to the students so they can reflect and enjoy them any time. It’s a great tool for learning."
Laura had a huge smile on her face from the moment I walked in. It’s clear she loves what she does and it’s inspiring to see someone who has worked so hard for their dream, achieve it!
The Chesterfield Vocal Studio is open and ready for business and I think a visit to see Laura would make an amazing Christmas present! Be sure to get it booked quickly though as clients are already singing at the door for entry.

Intro To Heathcotes Group
Words: Simon Paterson
Image: Heathcotes Group
Established in 2004, the Heathcotes Group has over 72 residential and supported living services across the country. Heathcotes are specialists in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities, challenging behaviours and associated complex needs. With their head office based in Chesterfield and a fantastic new development on the verge of completion, I was keen to catch up with Natalia (Director of Business Development) to hear more.
"I am very pleased to say Brendon House is due to open in December," says Natalia. "Brendon House on Brendon Avenue is a supported living development comprised of four, self-contained apartments, built to a very high specification. We have been working alongside the Derbyshire County Council to bring this project to life and we are really looking forward to the scheme opening”.
I was born and raised in Loundsley Green and regularly visit my parents there, I can see, over the past few years that Heathcotes have been busy. "That’s right, we are also in the process of re- developing Loundsley House on Cuttholme Road into a supported living service. It will support eight individuals some time now, operating as a residential service, and this transformation means we will be able to offer people a home of their own in the heart of the community. Loundsley House will offer six en-suite bedrooms and twenty four hour care and support. It has a homely, modern feel with spacious communal areas such as the lounge, kitchen and dining room, with a lovely big garden out the back. All of our staff members are NAPPI trained (Non Abusive Physical and Psychological Interventions), where the emphasis is very much on positive behaviour support. We have worked closely with the Derbyshire County Council in relation to the redevelopment of Loundsley House, which is a really positive example of partnership working."
With Loundsley House over-looking the park and being a stone's throw away from Chesterfield Town
Centre, I can see why you chose this location. Will the new developments and facilities create opportunities and jobs for residents in the local area? "We are currently recruiting for a number of positions and have around 20 plus vacancies available. Our Head of Recruitment Jon Burton (recruitment@heathcotes.net) is on a huge recruitment drive to fill the positions. We pay staff significantly over the national minimum wage, so there are good opportunities and reasons for local people to get involved with these services right from the very beginning."
Natalia has been with Heathcotes for over six years and has been the Director of Business Development since 2019. I asked her what she enjoyed the most about her role and the Heathcotes Group? "I think it is the agile nature of our business. We are able to be really responsive to new developments to meet local commissioning need. The development in Chesterfield is a true reflection of partnership working with our local authority colleagues, and that’s exactly how we intend to approach new developments moving forward. Ultimately, these developments will provide fantastic opportunities for the people we support to build upon their level of independence in a supported living setting, and that is why I love my role."
It was great chatting with Natalia, her passion for the Heathcotes developments and the positive impact on the local area was clear to see. In addition to Brendon and Loundsley House, Heathcotes also operates Pennine House; a residential service, also in Chesterfield.

IT'S NOT BEEN EASY
We catch up with Neil Turner and Andy Watterson, owners at The Crafty Dog to see how the last two years have been, running one of Brampton’s favourite pubs.
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: The Crafty Dog
It’s three and half years now since we opened,” says Neil. “At the time we had no idea that out of that period we’d spend 18 months with the doors closed. If we knew, we’d still do it. I feel a bit surprised to hear myself saying that but running my own pub has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it makes me smile every time I walk through the door.”
When lockdown hit Neil and Andrew had no option other than to furlough their staff and shut the doors. They had recently created boutique hotel rooms above the bar, and these remained empty, just like the seats in the pub.
“At the very start was Mother’s Day and we had produce purchased and ready for Sunday,” says Andrew. “We took the decision to offer a collection service for everyone who’d booked a place and we had a busy time getting everything out to ensure things weren’t wasted. This was the last time we opened until the summer.”
The pair lost a few key members of staff before reopening and assumed finding replacements wouldn’t be an issue, after all, bar work is the natural progression for many people studying or looking for part time work. “We advertised and the response was really poor, we lined up numerous interviews but only a handful of people showed up. It was really worrying,” explains Neil. “We are suddenly competing with worldwide names paying cash incentives to people who move into areas near their warehouses and the supply of young workers that fed the hospitality industry has all but dried up.”
“I know it’s not just us that are experiencing these issues, many other pubs and hotels are finding it hard to source the right people. This week things have changed, and we’ve been able to bring some great new people into the team and we’re over the initial panic, but it hasn't been easy.”
“Another issue we face is how people celebrate, it’s too easy to pop a ‘congrats’ on social media, the change in culture the various lockdowns have created is impacting us all. People simply aren’t meeting at the local to ‘wet the baby’s head’, celebrate a birthday or whatever event they’d call in for,” says Neil. “People are staying in, takeaways have changed from just one a week to three or four in some cases, and these are delivered to your door. Many of these people previously called into our local pubs, restaurants and cafes.”
Page 40 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Business
To adapt the pair are making changes to their menus so they too can offer a home delivery service. “We have a great changing menu but some of the choices aren’t right for home delivery so we’re refining things and developing a menu choice that will work for the diners in the pub and also those at home who want a Craft pizza or burger. We are also doing Sunday Dinner takeaways, so give it a go and save on the washing up.”
"Another issue we face is how people celebrate, it’s too easy to pop a ‘congrats’ on social media,"
Neil is keen to see the hostelries along Chatsworth Road and around Brampton pull together. He mentioned the Brampton Mile and how people used to come to the road as a location, known for great pubs. “We have some fantastic neighbours along Chatsworth Road, there has been a change in the quality of offering along the road over the last few years, each venue is different and each has its own loyal following, but we need to shout louder and bring in new customers to enjoy what we have to offer,” says Neil.
“COVID has made us realise how much we’ll need to change our offer over time. We have some ideas about how we can support the pubs around us, and we’ll be opening discussions with them to see what we can do.
“We really do feel the next six months will be a testing time for our local independent businesses, hopefully the summer will see us all back on track, fingers crossed for a busy festive season.
“We love craft beer, we love local people, we love the community we’re in and we look forward to seeing you for a pint or a meal at some point soon.”
Christmas is just a few weeks away and it’s the perfect time to drop into one of the many pubs and restaurants across town. A significant number of new venues have recently opened, we are spoilt for choice, so make a plan and call in to one you’ve not tried. I’ve made a list and pinned it on my iMac, I’ll be trying as many as I can and putting my money back into the local economy. Would be great to see you there too!

I'm dreaming of a green Christmas
Words: Maisie Cook
Images: Adobe Stock & Paul Chapman
Page 42 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Environment
Who doesn’t love an annual Christmas shopping spree, togged up in your hat, scarf and gloves and on the hunt for a bedazzled outfit to deck yourself out in on the big day? Just thinking about it now gives me the festive butterflies. There is no better feeling than spending £30 purchasing the gift of your girlfriend’s dreams (or so you think…) and then packaging it up carefully with shiny, new wrapping paper. After you’ve stuffed yourself silly like a Christmas turkey and scraped the leftover sprouts into the bin, it’s time to roll into the living room and rip open 3 million ‘HO HO HO’ cards from family and friends galore. But whilst all these activities may sound comfortingly cosy and familiar, this year it’s time for a different kind of Christmas. An eco-friendly Christmas. Whilst I let this proposition sink in, allow me to debunk a common misconception which most probably popped into your head upon first reading the phrase. Let visions of hours of handcrafting bespoke gifts made from leaves and twigs fizzle away. Think no more of painful cuts from folding piece of paper after piece of paper in order to make your own Christmas cards and save the dying planet in the process. Being sustainable during the festive period doesn’t have to be physically demanding or time consuming. With all your fears and worries hopefully long gone, take a look at these five trouble-free, painless (and even fun) ways to reduce your carbon footprint this Christmas whilst still having a jolly good time!
1. Rethinking your Chrimbo ‘fit
It’s easy to get carried away in the month of December. Your friends are all ordering a fresh outfit for the 25th and it would just be simpler to use the Internet to purchase that black velvet dress, the one you’d had in mind which you could pair with a black clutch bag and silver heels, except you don’t have those either so… they can go in the basket too! But wait. Don’t you already have a green velvet dress hanging in your wardrobe from last Christmas Day? Admittedly, it’s green not black, but I doubt Auntie Carol is going to remember and at the cost of saving the planet, it’s a much kinder alternative. If this all sounds too much to bear and you can’t possibly wear the same outfit twice, consider a clothes swap with your friends, as they will most likely have a similarly fancy outfit hanging dormant in their wardrobe, or visit your local charity shop where you are sure to find a party outfit, and at a price worth partying for too (rest assured, you won’t have to wear a pair of grandad trousers).
2. Choosing more eco-friendly alternatives for wrapping
Not many people enjoy the task of packaging up Christmas presents. The feeling of rage when you are unable to find the end of the Sellotape is unlike any other. When you open out a bottle bag only to find the champagne cork sticks out of the topthat is when you’ve really hit rock bottom. But what if I were to make a suggestion that might improve this difficult task just a tiny bit? You could help the planet just by reusing wrapping paper. It doesn’t just have to be Christmas-themed either; other suitable celebratory wrapping paper can be used too, provided it doesn’t have ‘Wishing you a happy birthday’ emblazoned across it in bold lettering. Although the temptation to rip open a gift with as much enthusiasm as possible may be too strong for the little ones, it surely wouldn’t be impossible for you to open your presents more carefully and tuck the neatly folded wrapping paper away in a drawer for next year’s gifts, being sure to say your Thank Yous first.
Another sustainable substitute proving to be trendy this year is using off-cuts of
Page 43 Please Mention S40 Local Magazine
material instead of wrapping paper, think discarded t-shirts, pyjamas or any other items bearing bright and cheerful designsthis not only eliminates Sellotape but more importantly, adds a unique, personalised touch to your gifts.
Don’t worry, the death of the Christmas card is not upon us. Consider just sending Christmas cards to elderly relatives and people you rarely see at Christmas time, making use of local sources such as Sally Ginger and Herbert & Rose. You can go completely paper-free, there’s a variety of e-card websites where you can choose your design, enter a festive message along with the recipient’s email address and let those magical things known as airwaves do the delivering for you.
5. Putting those leftovers to good use
3. Considering your gift-buying habits
Staying on the topic of recycling, let’s talk presents. It is reported that each year, the UK spends an estimated £700 million on unwanted gifts and £42 million worth of those end up in a landfill! How many of us receive a pair of garish socks year after year from a distant family member which end up being thrown away? Think about creating an online wish list to ensure loved ones don’t gift you items you won’t use. In addition, buying from local businesses at Christmas time is a great idea, as not only will you be putting money into their deserving pockets, but you can be certain of their origin. A few suggestions, Libby's offers a variety of products from independent UK makers and designers, and M's Gallery and Adorn Jewellery also seek out the best UK makers for items that are both beautiful and quirky.
4. Using another mode to send greetings cards
Another common item which is often discarded unsustainably at Christmas is the greetings card. The London Cleaning System reports that around 1 billion Christmas cards end up in the bin every year, when they could be recycled. Is it really worth the environmental impact, the hand ache from writing ‘Seasons Greetings’ a thousand times over, and the cost of the cards in the first place, just for a two second glance at the generic ink inside? You must think I’m a heartless bah-humbug, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Probably the most damaging effect that Christmas has on the environment is the food waste. We all know that overly full feeling, the point you reach where that last green sphere staring up at you from amongst the mash would cause your trouser button to fly off in despair. ‘I just can’t manage that last mouthful’ or words to that effect leave your mouth. So, the plates are swiftly swept away from under your nose and the remnants from your plate are emptied into the rubbish. That one leftover sprout could have been something. He could have made it big. He could’ve been reborn. Pan-fried into a lovely bubble and squeak or stirred into a casserole with leftover parsnips too. You could even take inspiration (if you dare…) from Paul’s turkey pie recipe. I’m certain a few rogue sprouts concealed beneath the meat wouldn’t alter the taste too much. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying parsnip soup for breakfast, dinner, and tea!

FOR EVERY BUMP IN THE ROAD, WE'RE HERE
Rob Wood, Compliance Manager at Jones & Co.
Nothing ever runs smoothly does it? In my line of work, maintaining order and compliance throughout the business are my main objectives. Striving to ensure things do go smoothly is a key part of the job. But it’s inevitable that there will be bumps in the road along the way for all of us. We never know what’s around the corner, so it helps to know that when you do hit a bump, there’s someone looking out for you.
We’re always looking out for our clients here at Jones & Co. From the first meeting we have with a potential client, we listen and get to know what is important to them. Only by understanding exactly what people need and where they want to be, financially and personally, can we help them to get there. And, of course, with every will in the world, it’s never a smooth road!
We pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our clients. They can rely on us to be there whenever they need advice, a discussion or even just someone to talk to. Change is part of life, and we make sure we’re here when things do change and a bump in the road appears. It’s often at this point in their lives that clients are at their most vulnerable and having a person they trust to support and advise them is crucial.
On a daily basis, we assist people to make difficult financial decisions. Take succession planning for example. Preparing for when you’re no longer here isn’t something any of us want to think about. However, guiding clients through this process and creating a bespoke plan always delivers the same result: a sense of relief and comfort that those they love will be financially secure.
At the same time, we also provide expert advice for our clients who have lost a loved one and received an inheritance. Often people in this situation have an idea of what they would like to do and that usually involves honouring the loved one’s wishes to leave a lasting and beneficial legacy. Once again, it comes down to listening and advising using our professional and personal skills to ensure the best outcome, be it establishing an
investment portfolio, setting up a business, buying a property or simply taking the trip of a lifetime.
We help people all the time. It’s actually what makes us tick because it makes everything worthwhile. We enjoy helping people, watching them succeed and prosper in spite of what life throws at them. Being an independent financial advice firm is as much about people as it is about finance and investment. The two go hand in hand. Oh, and I should mention that Jones & Co is a fully signed up member of the Personal Finance Society’s Financial Vulnerability Task Force, an initiative that encourages IFAs to promote greater understanding, appropriate behaviours and good practice in respect of consumer vulnerability. Another way for us to underline that for every bump in the road, we’re here.

HOUSEBUILDERS RESPOND TO ENERGY CRISIS WITH THOUGHTFUL INCENTIVES
Words: Linden Homes
Following the recent rise in energy prices, local housebuilder Linden Homes is offering a well-timed and considered incentive designed to help buyers reduce anxieties around utility bills.
At Walton Peaks in Walton, Linden Homes is offering to pay utility bills for a year on selected homes, up to the value of £3,000.
Walton Peaks is a collection of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes located to the South-West of Chesterfield, close to the stunning Peak District.
In recent weeks, there has been an unprecedented rise in global gas prices, putting pressure on household energy suppliers and causing consumers significant concern. With potential further increases in utility bills on the horizon, Linden Homes is offering to help lift the burden from prospective home buyers of these rapidly inflating prices.
The pandemic caused the largest reduction in energy demand since World War II, leading to a drop in global gas production of over 3%. But last year’s cold winter and economies recovering quickly following the more recent easing of lockdown restrictions has led to a surge in demand. Gas markets have now reached record highs, leading to a sharp increase in home energy bills and growing fears around the cost of living this winter.
For those considering buying a new home, there are already complex sums to be done as homebuyers look to make their budget stretch as far as possible, so these fears carry even more weight. However, it is worth considering the fact that newly constructed homes are typically more energy efficient than older properties. Indeed, the Home Builders Federation has found that new homes built in England and Wales are, on average, 65% more energy efficient than a Victorian house of the same style. Double glazing, modern insulation and efficient boilers all help new-home owners keep energy usage to a minimum. Homes at Walton Peaks include two-zone heating controls, loft insulation that is significantly above regulation thickness and fully insulated cavities.
in your pocket
Nonetheless, the energy crisis is set to continue. Indeed, experts have warned that consumers can expect another steep hike in bills in April 2022, when Ofcom’s price cap is adjusted once again. Moreover, Keith Anderson, chief executive of Scottish Power, has said Britain’s gas crisis will keep driving energy bills higher until 2023, with the potential for even well-run energy suppliers to go bust.
The Linden Homes utility bill incentive gives new homeowners peace of mind and helps alleviate these costs for the first 12 months in their new home by giving a safety net should there be a further price cap adjustment in April 2022.
The energy regulator, Ofcom, protects customers on some tariffs from rising energy costs with a price cap, limiting how much firms can charge per unit of gas. However, the cap - which covers 15 million UK households - is adjusted every six months to reflect market prices. The most recent change came into force on 1 October 2021, resulting in a steep rise in utility bills. For example, householders on standard tariffs, with typical levels of energy use, saw bills go up by £139 to £1,277 a year, whilst those with prepayment meters saw a £153 increase.
Whilst rising gas prices remain a serious issue, it is reassuring to see homebuilders such as Linden Homes responding to the crisis with thoughtful incentives, like those on offer at Walton Peaks. With Home Exchange and Smooth Move also available on selected new homes, becoming part of the friendly Walton Peaks community, which includes a range of amenities and a variety of Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ schools for children of all ages, has never been easier.

My Running Diary Part 2:
Short Distance Runner to Marathon

Wellbeing
Ihad been inspired by an animated Anime TV (Japanese Animation) show to start running during the first Lockdown. After improving upon my initial time of 26 minutes and 43 seconds, to 16 minutes and 21 seconds covering the same route over 6 months, I was ready for a new challenge!
January 2020 and a second, more deadly wave of the Coronavirus hit the UK. Positive cases were escalating and the chance of starting university lectures in person seemed as remote as Boris Johnson combing his hair! With time on my hands, I rewatched Run with the Wind and the team effort of the characters running their 12-mile sections of a marathon. Inspired, I decided that training for my own marathon would see me through the next period of isolation and dark nights. Originally, the marathon began in Ancient Greece, the Athenians learned that the Persians had landed at the city of Marathon, a messenger called Pheidippides ran to Sparta to request help. On delivering his message, after a 26-mile run at speed, it is said that Pheidippides dropped down dead! The distance between Sparta and Marathon gave the Olympic event its name. I certainly had no intention of dying in the attempt of my next running challenge so I started googling marathon preparation.
During my research, I came across the Conqueror Virtual Challenges; 18 distances that contestants can run, swim or cycle independently or, with a friend. The shortest distance on offer is the distance of the English Channel at 21 miles long and the longest is Route 66 - at an insane 2,280 miles!
As a Japanese TV programme had piqued my interest in marathon running in the first place, I chose Mount Fuji - a distance of 46 miles and registered online, paying £40. I decided to rope in my friend Dec and between us we would clock up the miles.
As we progressed through the distance of our virtual challenge, we received online postcards from actual landmarks of the journey at 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% completion. One such landmark was the Narusawa Ice Cave, these online post cards added interest, motivation and a sense of scale that just couldn’t be found running by yourself. I might not have actually been there, but the immersion this challenge generated gave running a tangible goal. Get to the next checkpoint.
It took 60 days to complete our journey up Mount Fuji and in an act of support, another friend joined us, by bike, on our last 3 miles. Shortly afterwards, a gold medal arrived by post along with a commemorative t-shirt and I was hooked (again)!
I decided to sign up individually for Hadrian’s Walla distance of 90 miles - and train at the same time for a real marathon now that Boris had announced 'Freedom Day'. A professional marathon must be run in one go so I realised that I needed a greater injection of stamina! Mum knew a personal trainer, Rebecca Thomas, and put me in touch.
Rebecca met me on the running track at Queen’s Park, one hot afternoon in May and put me through my paces. A baseline assessment was made and from there a training plan was devised. I continued to meet her once a week throughout the summer – sometimes on the track and sometimes in her converted garage in Walton, furnished with a variety of the latest exercise equipment. Each week, Rebecca emailed me exercises to raise my fitness levels and I invested in my own additional equipment: a 10kg weight and skipping rope. It took some practise and a few choice words to master the skipping – something I had only attempted once a year on Sports Day as a kid, but within a few days, I was skipping like Rocky Balboa!
Rebecca kept me focused; it felt like a joint effort and doubled my motivation. I now had a marathon booked, the 5K Run Alton Towers, and was clocking up miles on my Hadrian’s Wall Challenge.
By September, I’d begun my second year at university and finally got to meet some of the other students on my course! I made the university badminton team, which I felt was a direct result of my increased fitness – friends I had played of equal ability the year before, I was beating decisively.
I was now a long way off the unfit, sluggish, fastfood lover I had been when Lockdown began. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good takeaway now and then but I regulate it with a regular fitness regime and the mental health benefits are long lasting including improved sleep and mood.
As this article goes to press, I will have completed both a virtual and actual marathon. A goal I never thought I could accomplish, all starting with a simple animated film which asked, “what does it feel like to run with the wind? I think if I keep running and one day I’ll find an answer.” From that moment I wanted to know that feeling too.
Read my next article for a planned route to rekindle your love of running or kick-start it. If you mention S40/S41 Local and this article to Rebecca Thomas of Thomas Personal Coaching, she will give you a free initial consultation – I highly recommend it.

Charity Dance Show
Brookfield has a history of incredible dance shows performed to support charities. For the first time in two years, Brookfield held its charity dance show on Thursday 18 November. As always it was a spectacular performance in support of the charity, Mind. As we all know, people’s mental health has been worsened by the pandemic and, through it all, Mind continued its amazing work supporting anyone who sought help. Being creative, whether through dance, art or music helped so many people get through the pandemic and bring us together despite isolation, and the dancers at Brookfield wanted to thank Mind for their phenomenal work and give back to the charity.
This year’s theme was Moments In Time, reflecting on pivotal moments in history. Every year group from year 7 to 13 was represented, with year 7s performing a great 80’s throwback to a Michael Jackson song, and year 8s reflecting
on the suffragette movement. Furthermore, many people’s favourite musicals could be seen with a song from Hamilton and a dance from Six the Musical, bringing history to life. We’d like to thank the year 13’s, Hannah, Gabi, Arwen and Holly for organising the show this year and performing so spectacularly, having taken part in every charity dance show since starting Brookfield in year 7.
At the end of the show, all dancers performed to ‘It’s okay not to be okay’ by Demi Lovato and Marshmello, an uplifting reminder that support is out there. Thank you to everyone for supporting Mind and raising awareness, and thank you to Mrs Carter for her support over the years of running the charity dance show.

Mostly here for the shopping!
BCS geographers ventured forth on urban studies field work while the autumn sun was still keeping the mean streets of Chesterfield at a reasonable temperature. With their feet barely under the Brookfield tables, all year 7 students were given licence to roam in the week that the latest Bond hit the screens.
Still time to change
After being postponed due to the pandemic, COP26 (the UN climate change conference) was held from the 31 October to the 12 November. COP is an annual summit (Conference of Parties) that 'brings together parties to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change'.
I was lucky enough to be able to get to Glasgow to encourage democrats from all over the world to take further action towards combating climate change, specifically avoiding the impacts of global warming above 1.5 °C of pre-industrial levels.
We spent two days with our placards and samba drums supporting and marching with other activists that were all doing the same as us. One of the main highlights was attending a Fridays for Future rally. Young people - all in Glasgow for COP - met up and had the chance to exchange stories of rallies, protests and conversations with MPs and schools. There was an open mic, so along with Greta Thunberg, many other activists were able to share stories of climate change and how it is affecting them. Some of the most poignant of these
Supervised by the geography department and a team of willing conscripts, the pupils spent a day looking at the history of Chesterfield’s urban development – did you know there was a Roman fort at St Mary’s gate? – as well as putting their social skills to use, asking visitors why they came to the town and about their experience.
"We visited the Parish Centre and the Shambles, for land use mapping," said student Noah Young. "We walked to the market area near Market Hall and had to find the four-figure grid references of the points on the map."
Noah Passell and Zara Baker added: "We learnt that a grizzly murder around the issue of tax was committed in the Shambles. We made a quick stop to look at an outstanding statue in Rykneld Square; called The Knife Angel, made out of knives donated during an amnesty by people who realised they don’t need to carry them."
A fun outing… a great trip… our first trip at Brookfield and it was a good one.
Nick Davey, assisted by Noah Passell, Zara Baker, Noah Young.
were the speeches given by activists living in the Global South which is currently suffering the worst effects of climate change.
Being able to hear the stories, voices and anger of young people witnessing climate change destroy their homes first-hand was a reminder of why it is so vital that we demand a better future.
We all know that this world is worth protecting, and we all know that we are not doing enough to prevent the crucial 1.5 degrees of warming we are rapidly running towards.
But there is still time! Time to prevent the effects of climate change and revive parts of the world already damaged. To do this, we must all come together to reach a common goal; to pass on a safe planet to all the future generations.

It's Official: CHRISTMAS IS BACK!
Brookfield Community School Christmas Market
Friday 3rd December 5.30 - 8.30pm.
As a Brookfield student, shopaholic and helper at the 2019 Brookfield Parents and Friends Association (PFA) event of the year, I am excited to inform you of this year's Christmas market. After some strange and difficult times, Christmas is officially back on. Local businesses, gift stalls, raffles, tombola and various other festive activities will be taking place. I personally am looking forward to the mixture of events this year from the choir to gift stalls to food. There will be something, I’m sure, that interests you and your family.
Rebecca Hudson, BPFA Chair, told me: “We’re delighted to be back with our Christmas market and raffle after missing a year due to the pandemic. The generosity of local businesses has been amazing and we really hope everyone comes along to support the school on Friday 3rd December.” Becky Turner, BPFA Treasurer, added: “We’ve been able to help the school lease a new minibus this year and we have lots of ideas for
spending next year. The Christmas market is our main fund-raising event and we are really grateful to all the community that support it.”
Forever Fairies are back again this year. Nicola Dawson said ‘We had a great time at the last market, it was very busy with parents, children and local residents, in fact we sold out of Christmas decorations, so make sure you arrive early!’
Just a few of the other local businesses taking part are: Cleodore Designs, Prince’s Gifts, Wreathbox, Julie’s Gems, Avon, Krizma and Me and Thee. This year, the fair will take place in the Sports Hall at Brookfield from 5:30 to 8:30pm, costing £1.50 for adults and completely free for under 16s!
All proceeds will be going to the PFA to be spent in the interest of students at the school.
So, bring your Christmas spirit (and your money) on Friday 3rd December to support the school and have a bit of festive fun.

Kip in Matlock and Chesterfield is celebrating its 10-year anniversary!
But how did it all begin?
Do you remember the winter of 2010 all that snow and ice that hung around for months? We had seen nothing like it for years. Well Jo was then living and working as the Principal of an FE college in Lebanon and had taken off from Beirut to come home to her family for Christmas… but it wasn’t as easy as she thought!
When she arrived in Heathrow there were no trains to get her to St Pancras station, and no tickets from there to Derby either! She then tried all the car hire firms so she could drive home, but again they had nothing. Travel at Christmas is always a challenge, but Jo was really up against it! Eventually she managed to get a flight up to Manchester where she hired a car to drive home, freezing in her warm climate clothing. So, what does this have to do with the formation of Kip in Matlock?
Well, the Matlock Kip was born over a cup of coffee with Jo’s sister sitting beside a warm open fire and talking about what Jo wanted to do next in her career and where. The snow didn’t put her off the idea of moving back to the UK, but she needed something to work towards. Taking the decision to ‘go it alone’ and set up her own business was a big step (as it is for anyone who has never done this before). So, Jo went back to Beirut and handed in her notice which had to be a year!
Kip offered Jo an outlet for her teaching and managerial talents, so she opened Kip McGrath Matlock in April 2012 and had 1 student and a couple of computers! Chesterfield opened the following year in April 2013 again with one student. It takes time to grow a business and get the marketing into the right places to attract new students and Jo saw a steady trickle of students into Matlock and Chesterfield until today she can proudly claim to have helped 910 young people into their career choices, raised their educational levels in mainstream school and made a lot of new friends with the young people, their parents and grandparents.
Jo gets most of her new students from existing families and word of mouth by parents spreading her success stories. She is now onto her third or fourth sibling in some families. One family has the full set: Charlie in Year 11, the youngest one aged 6 and the middle brothers 10 and 13 already working away with her.
But it’s not just parents who seek her out… local schools use her directly and now the County Council is requisitioning her services with special needs children who need more individualised and personal support.
So, congratulations on your 10th anniversary to Jo and all the tutors and students at Kip!

Out & About
This month we've been out and about putting together a walk starting from Storrs Road car park to Linacre and around the bottom Reservoir. This walk is almost five miles and there are plenty of options to add sections on or continue around all three reservoirs. There is even the option to call in at The Peacock Inn for a drink or meal, so as far as we're concerned, it's a perfect winter warmer.
• Start from Storrs Road car park, cross the pedestrian crossing and turn right along Storrs Road.
• Turn left up Upper Moor Street and right at the end. Follow this path behind Brookfield school classrooms and up between two hedges with the school buildings on the left and the sports fields on the right.
• At the end you enter an open field. Head diagonally across the field following the path to the coppice.
• Pass through between the edge of the school grounds and the end of the coppice and head up the field with open views of the countryside to your right. Stay on the left of the field until you reach the top of the coppice, here head slightly right along the side of the top hedge to a gap in the and head along the gravel path to your right.
• Pass through another bar gate (1) and continue up the path ignoring the left-hand junction, until you reach a T junction of tracks by a house.
• Go right here onto Piper Lane to reach Ashgate Road after a short distance.
• Cross the road and head left towards the corner (just past Caus House Farm) where Woodnuck Lane goes off right towards Linacre (2).
• Follow this wide Bridleway uphill slightly past Hadfield Barns.
• At a junction of paths continue straight ahead following the bridleway signposted to Linacre reservoir (3).
• Stay on this path for quite a while, downhill to reach a bridge (4) go straight over and up to reach the toilet block.
• Just past the toilet block you can detour to the Peacock Inn at Cutthorpe (see next page*).
• If not visiting The Peacock pub, continue up the tarmac path. Before reaching the car park turn left through a gate (5) along a wide track.
• Follow this track until you see the reservior ahead, take the middle path, slighty left, across a wide bridge, (6) and cross the dam wall, below the second reservoir (you can continue slightly right before this bridge and walk round the second and third reservoirs, however, our route only takes you round the bottom reservoir).
Page 67 Please Mention S40 Local Magazine 1 2 3 4
At the far side of the dam wall turn left (7), down a steep descent and then up through the trees, continue to follow the main path with the reservoir on your left.
• At a slight fork (8) stay on the bottom path towards the dam wall.
• Reach a gap next to a gate, adjacent to the dam wall, turn right up the short climb to a wall and turn left, follow this main track (9) straight ahead and then downhill, bearing left, until you reach the junction with Woodnuck Lane passed earlier. The small bridge is on your left.
• Turn right and retrace your steps along Woodnuck Lane back to Ashgate Road.
• Turn right back along Piper Lane taking the path across the fields to return to Storrs Road.
*The Peacock Inn: Cutthorpe
If you decide to call into The Peacock Inn at Cutthorpe just follow the additional section below. It's about half a mile to the pub ... remember it gets dark early at the moment should you accidentally stay too long!
• Head up the small, stepped path on the righthand side (10), (opposite steps heading down to the reservoir) that heads straight across a field up to the Peacock pub.
• You pass through a dry-stone wall at each side of the field (11 & 12).
• Continue straight ahead on a path through the woods, ignore any paths to the left or right, until you see a wall and a footpath sign, cross through the wall (13) and head diagonally left across the field to the Peacock Inn.
Enjoy your walk and be sure to tell them at The Peacock where you found the route!

TIPS FOR A PLASTIC FREE CHRISTMAS
From Plastic Free Chesterfield
ADVENT CALENDARS
In the mad rush ahead of Christmas, don’t forget to take your reusable bags on your trip to the supermarket. Try and make it to the farmers market or greengrocer for those seasonal winter veggies. Get crusty loaves plastic free from the bakers, and take your own airtight containers for meat, sh and cheese. Also if you can, go local and support the independent stores
To keep the food fresh use the now readily available beeswax wraps instead of cling lm.
Instead of the disposable chocolate Advent Calendars which have lots of plastic holders inside, why not try a fabric calendar with numbered pockets or a wooden one?
So in closing, we hope you will try some of these alternative Christmas tips and if you are wanting any ideas for, re lls or changes please go to the Plastic Free Chester eld website or FB page. We also want you share pictures of your Christmas changes so we can post them on all our social media outlets.
These can be filled with chocolate, small gifts or messages and can then be packed away and used year after year.
WRAPPING PAPER
Plastic plates and cutlery, while convenient for a Christmas, we are obviously out for a plastic-free Christmas, but even paper plates and napkins, which aren’t plastic items, do come wrapped in single-use plastic, so will need to be substituted. To eliminate plastic wrapping entirely, choose cotton or linen reusable napkins, and normal crockery that can be washed afterwards..
Shiny wrapping paper looks great but the shininess also makes it impossible to recycle!
Instead try brown paper jazzed up with fabric ribbon or even better, seek out reusable options like fabric wraps or gift boxes that can be reused next year.
Visit our facebook group for more tips on how to enjoy a Christmas which has less impact on our planet.
You can cut down on your plastic use when prepping food, using glass or enamel containers, which are more preferable than throwaway takeaway containers.
Looking back this year has been TRYING to say the least so with that in mind, lots of the things we have suggested can be done as families, and spending this valuable time together maybe better than buying lots of gifts. Please think about this. We have one planet, let’s treat it to a good Christmas, by reducing our plastic usage and the waste that we create. from Plastic Free Chester eld.

Method
1. Preheat your oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5.

6. Add the turkey meat to the pan and stir.

9. Add the crème fraîche, turn the heat up and bring back up to the boil.
Left over Turkey, brussel sprouts and stuff? A while ago Jamie Oliver did a program that showed us what to do with our left over festive food, one recipe that has since become a staple in our house is our take on his Turkey and Sweet Leek Pie.
The pic is one I prepared earlier! Ingredients and methods are below so please have a bash if you fancy it, it really is a great way to use up the leftovers.
With regards to weights and measures, I take a 'chuck it in and see how it tastes' approach, so feel free to chop and change as you wish. The one shown is actually chicken, a couple of breasts from our local farm shop, bacon, leeks and mushrooms. Jamie messes with walnuts and fancy pastry but we don't bother with that. Be aware though, it takes an hour or so to prepare, then 40 minutes in the oven but it disappears in minutes! Good luck fellow pie lovers.
• freshly ground black pepper
• 800g (or whatever you have left) cooked white turkey meat chunks
• 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour
• 900ml of stock (I use 2 cubes)
• 2 tablespoons crème fraîche (not essential)
• 500g puff pastry
• 1 beaten egg
10. Sieve the filling over another large empty pan and save the gravy mixture.
11. Spread some flour and roll out your pastry.
12. In a large (22 x 30cm) baking dish, pour the mixture in and spread it out evenly.
13. Pop the pastry on top, tuck the ends under and score the pastry.
14. Brush with the beaten egg.
15. Any left over pastry can be cut into festive shapes and popped on top, again brush your shapes with egg.
16. The pie needs about 35 to 40 minutes in the oven and will look puffy and golden like the picture.
17. Take it out and serve with plenty of freshly cooked veg, some peas and the hot gravy poured over.
18. ENJOY!

ANY EXCUSE FOR A BEER?
Words & Images: Dave Hattersley
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual trip by Barlow Kingston Rovers FC, (sponsored by Brampton Brewery), from Chesterfield & District Sunday League, to play against a team made up mainly of Stenhousemuir supporters, and to take in a Warriors game. The anniversary would have been last year but delayed due to the circumstances. The trip has been organized by Dave Hattersley, an avid Stenhousemuir supporter for over 50 years, one time director at Ochilview, and player with Barlow KRFC for nearly 40 years.
It had always been a wish of Dave’s to bring a local squad to Scotland, but pre internet days it was nigh on impossible. How do you get there, where do you stay, where and who do you play against, who goes, what kit do you play in and how much does it cost? Eventually, a decision was made and in 2001 (the year of the foot and mouth disease!), 16 people piled into a 17 seater minibus to make the inaugural journey. The trip was so enjoyable and the welcome so typically Scottish, that it was agreed it would be done again the following year, and the year after that etc. In 2002 the journey was made by plane, the same again the next year, and since then by train. The numbers making the journey has varied between a minimum of six, normally in the teens, occasionally in the 20’s, but culminating this year in 33! Over the years, well over 100 different people have made the journey from Chesterfield to Stenhousemuir, many becoming ardent supporters. Many enduring friendships have been made, one player from Barlow having a trial with Stenhousemuir, and even one marriage and emigration from England to Scotland!
The Stenhousemuir lads have been making the return journey for the past 15 years, enjoying the hospitality and nightlife of Chesterfield. The results of the game are largely immaterial, (usually won by the home team with the away side having imbibed too much the previous night!) and soon forgotten! Long may the relationship continue, and here’s to the next 20 years.

WINTER GARDENING TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield
Images: Robert Nixon Betts
Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips.
Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil.
It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too.
Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose Super Aquadulce, a hardy variety. A greenhouse or window sill can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow seeds for peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space.
Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost, but don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all.
Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.
Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year.

See the Sunbirds live at Sheffield, Greystones with a pair of tickets courtesy of MP Promotions - entries in by Friday 21 Jan 2022!
The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS coming to Sheffield, York & Manchester this February 2022.
Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell.
‘Cool To Be Kind’, released in November 2020, signalled the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound.
The band's sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody, like Seattle in the late 80's/90's.
“Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that,

CFC
Fancy a double?
Words & Images: Michael South
Hello again my fellow Spireites. Following last month's article things are going well and we are still on track to be promoted back to the league two of football. Even though however, we have some serious issues in the old injuries department at the squad, defence mainly, we keep marching on.
Gunning is now out for a while with his broken face which he picked up during the victory against Eastleigh. Despite other defensive injuries, with Laurence Maguire, Haydn Hollis and George Carline, we are still heading in the right direction thankfully.
Now, the bright side. You may have heard that Chesterfield Football Club has actually secured their place in the second round of the FA Cup destroying Southend United 3-1 at home last weekend (or a few weeks ago by the time you read this). We normally crash out at the first round or not even qualify for it since we sunk to the National League, so to be in the next round is a top feeling. Shame we aren't at home for it but I'm sure we'll beat Salford to reach the 3rd round to play Man City at home!
Judging by the team spirit and attitude during the injury crisis, the club clearly want to get as far as possible in the FA cup. I actually have a genuine feeling we will get past the 3rd round this season and
show the general footballing public what we are capable of. Watch the Tshimanga goal against Southend back on YouTube, it was amazing to see. Especially as he'd only just been substituted on to the field. And as I keep banging on about, it's all down to the boss James Rowe. So much so, a month or so earlier, Southend even tried to poach James Rowe away from us to improve their own position. Obviously he remains firmly committed to the cause of the master plan at CFC. What more does he want? A young manager with the board's backing, in my opinion he is all set up to become a historical manager for the club and the town of Chesterfield. The young CFC fans of today who come to watch the home games now with the their mates or with family, will hopefully be telling their own kids what it was like to witness Rowes squad play at the ground. He's already notched up over 50 games under his belt for us and he will no doubt deliver the promotion to the fans back to the footballing leagues. Well he best do or I will look a bit daft. Technically speaking, we are currently on course for the league and cup double. That's the beauty of the FA cup. The normal rules of football don't apply, so let's just take a moment here to imagine that.
... Anyway (click of fingers), back to the present.
We currently sit 3rd in the table just a single point below leaders Boreham Woods and level on points with Grimsby. We have a less than fit squad but we are still looking good. The fact that we sign quick loanees to plug the gaps is again credit to the club's presence in the National League and to Rowe. James signed defender Luke Croll from Dag & Redbridge on a shortterm deal to fill in for Gunning. And you know what, he even scored on his debut after just 14 minutes!
Tshimanga too continues to bag the goals, netting his 12th goal in 14 league games. Currently the leading goal scorer in the league at the time of writing but I'd bet my last 50p that by the time you read this, he's scored even more! What a beautiful feeling to have. Seriously if you haven't been to see the guy play yet, get down to the stadium at a weekend to witness him...and the team play. You will not be disappointed. So, come the 15th May against Woking at the last game of the season you will be there, to see us lift the trophy. Remember, That's keep the faith Spireites!

So if you avoid glittery make-up and cards and stick to sparkles that won’t go down the plughole.
To keep the food fresh use the now readily available beeswax wraps instead of cling lm.
So in closing, we hope you will try some of these alternative Christmas tips and if you are wanting any ideas for, re lls or changes please go to the Plastic Free Chester eld website or FB page. We also want you share pictures of your Christmas changes so we can post them on all our social media outlets.
TIPS FOR A PLASTIC FREE CHRISTMAS From Plastic Free Chesterfield GLITTER
You can cut down on your plastic use when prepping food, using glass or enamel containers, which are more preferable than throwaway takeaway containers.
Looking back this year has been TRYING to say the least so with that in mind, lots of the things we have suggested can be done as families, and spending this valuable time together maybe better than buying lots of gifts. Please think about this. We have one planet, let’s treat it to a good Christmas, by reducing our plastic usage and the waste that we create. from Plastic Free Chester eld.
Try and avoid glitter, it’s not good for the environment. It’s just tiny pieces of plastic which can end up being washed down the sink and into our rivers and oceans!
