Hello and welcome to our first edition of 2022.
This time last year we were in another lockdown, and we held publication of S40 Local until the Spring, this year we’re off to a much better start, let’s hope it’s a sign.
The cover shot was taken just before Christmas on the path up Mam Tor. My son decided he wanted to look at the view from Mam Tor and we had a few hours to spare one Saturday, but the weather was miserable, it was misty and we couldn’t see a thing. We drove over, stopping for a bite to eat in Hope (The Wild Kettle Café - very nice) and then headed off.
As we drove up Winnats Pass I said, "we’re not going to see much", then at the top of the road, just over the cattle grid, the mist lifted and we were treated to glorious sunshine!
As we walked up the path, we emerged from the cloud! It blew us away, absolutely breath-taking, it felt like we were on the top of the world. We felt lucky and privileged to be in the right place at the right time, for once. Again, a good sign, OK it was the end of 2021 but I like to think it was a great start to 2022.

Reflection

I
'm not sure 2021 is going down in history as the most positive year. But, at a personal level I decided to reflect and see whether I could pick out some positives.
I know many people will have experienced pain, loss and hardship, but I hope that there are positives to be found amongst these dark days. I took a minute to scroll through my phone images. In our last edition I looked at images to show why I love Chesterfield. This edition is my positive reflection of 2021! Move from left to right and down the page. You'll be unsurprised that my highlights start with my bike leaning against a tree at Curbar Gap in the snow, memories of a great ride out on a fab day in conditions that kept the motorists at home. An egg butty, using eggs from our hens, lettuce, potatoes and a bread cob, all from Adam's Happy Hens, doing what we can to encourage and support local business. Edwin Starr's 12" single 'Contact' is something I think we were all starting to miss now, a year in from the start of lockdown, 23 March 2020. Grass and sky look fab when you take a moment to frame them. I do miss those huge blue skies with no vapour trails! A typical dramatic Chesterfield sunset, how many of these do we get?

Fresh green lettuce from the market, reminding me of the smiles and banter you get from the team at Ibbotsons. There is always a tennis ball in someone's pocket when we go on a walk; one of the few places we escaped to this year was the beach, and that ball went back and forth for hours. Decisions, that blue sky features again, this time on quiet roads, but which way to go, brings back thoughts of playing baby left, baby right! My kids are constantly amazing me, on a country walk they run ahead and appear in silhouette, and I love the way the hills have layered up in the background on this one. The joy of seeing a live performance, The Horne Section at Buxton Opera House, slightly off the wall, it was very Morecambe and Wise I thought. A huge handbag at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a walk and picnic with friends I'd not seen in ages. Another cracking sunset, this time in the van's mirror. Sometimes it pays to check the reflection. I know it might be difficult but why not take five minutes to reflect on your positives. Goodbye 2021, and here's to a positive and prosperous 2022!

A
few months ago, Bekah and I found ourselves in that rarest of situations; child and work free on a weekday! So, we decided to head out into the Peak District for a walk along the Monsal Trail, starting at Hassop Station. Heading North towards Chee Dale, we'd walked for roughly 10-15 minutes before we stumbled upon a sign that said, ‘Quackers Café - this way!’ We were expecting a quaint cafe, but what we found was a joy. The Quackers Café is on the Thornbridge Estate and is the perfect pit stop for anyone venturing along the Monsal Trail, which I would highly recommend, and it has stunning views of the gardens and hall.

We quickly found a seat outside, checked the menu and ordered a Thornbridge Jaipur Ale sausage roll, a slice of lemon meringue and two flat whites. But what excited us was the outdoor activities available for the children upon paid entry to the grounds. We decided to return the following day, kids in tow, for the whole Thornbridge experience. It didn’t disappoint! Thornbridge Hall was built in the 12th century, and over the years, it has been home to linen merchant's, lawyers, and student teachers, but it's Emma and Jim Harrison whom we owe the splendour of Thornbridge Hall that we see today.

A 15-year-old Emma visited Thornbridge Hall with her youth worker, Donna, and was astonished that places like this existed. She dreamt of buying Thornbridge and gliding down the staircase in a red flowing dress. This dream came true in 2002.
Emma and Jim set to work straight away renovating and transforming the property and grounds whilst preserving its history and elegance. Extensive work was completed on; the Music Room, Carriage House, Gardener's Cottage, North and South Lodges, and building work to link the whole estate. The Begonia collection in the Orangery was crowned the best in the UK by the BBC's James Wong from Gardeners World... be sure to check it out when you visit.
Bekah and I were eager to return the next day, so we set off early to make a day of it and ensure we didn't miss a thing.
We started with a walk around the gardens, which are just beautiful. There are lots of little places for the kids to explore’ like a giant secret garden with ancient statues, a picturesque pond filled with Koi carp, and stepping-stones to traverse on your adventure through to the garden centre and orangery.

After a morning spent taking in the garden and architecture, we ventured on through Daffodil Bank to the children's play area. With hammocks, a den adorned with books, giant chalkboards and chimes, swings, croquet, and the hook-aduck fountain filled with hundreds of ducks and paddling children, it was brilliant! All of this playing, purchasing and perusing was hungry, thirsty work, so we ventured into the Quackers café for the second time in two days. These activities, and the many events at Thornbridge Estate, change with the seasons, so be sure to keep up to date via social media or their website! Florie (aged 3) went for a kids picnic bag (a choice of baguette, either crisps, fruit or a Freddo and Fruit Shoot, milk or water). Bekah (aged undisclosed) had the Thornbridge quiche of the day. I (aged 41) had another Thornbridge Ale sausage roll, and Eva (aged 10) had some lemon drizzle cake because well, why not?
After our late lunch, we sat on Daffodil Bank and read a book to the kids before departing home, full of gratitude and joy. Throughout January, entry to the formal gardens and children's play area is free! When it's not free, it's amazing value for money, and I have no doubt we will see you frequenting Thornbridge many times. ranville’s Woods is a peaceful woodland burial ground a short walk from Matlock Road in Walton. It provides an alternative to a churchyard or crematorium as a final resting place, where the birds sing, animals’ rustle and trees sway gently.
I love the local woods and parkland we have close to home, Linacre, Walton, Holmebrook Valley etc, and the escape they allow us from the noise of everyday life, a place to reset, usually whilst riding my mountain bike. So, what better place to end up, than a lovely restored woodland within walking distance of our home?
I took a walk around Granville’s Woods with Beccy Edgar and spoke to Claire Lyons, both from The Woodland Burial Company, to understand more about the space. “It’s a very special place, which becomes clear once people see it for themselves,” says Claire. “The woodland isn't just a place to be laid to rest. Traditional funerals take your money, and you never see where it’s spent, but people who purchase a plot or ‘nook’ can use the space before it’s needed, building fond memories.”
Some are more experimental, such as the bat boxes aimed at trying to increase the number of bats in the woodland.
“People choose how their nook is maintained. Some want a simple natural space, while others want a consecrated ground within our nondenominational burial grounds. It’s a place where people can serve their passion for wildlife, or their broader environmental concerns,” says Claire.
The burial ground is cultivating a small community with social events, a website blog, quarterly newsletter and events for families; things people can get involved in and that allow them to feel a sense of belonging and ownership of the woodlands. They arrange foraging, litter picking and projects, such as the woodland pond. The woodland is really appealing, and I found myself having a conversation with the family I hadn’t expected to be having. It made me think about the impact I’ll have when I'm gone and the impact my legacy will have.
My family won’t have to sit around a table thinking about what dad might have wanted by planning now.
Simon Holden, the founder, set up Granville’s Woods in his father's name following his death. The family disliked the feel of the typical funeral plan. They felt ‘it simply wasn’t Dad’.
Granville Holden had a keen interest in nature, and they preferred to think of him in the woods, so Simon looked if this could happen. The woods in Walton were the perfect location and before long they were working through the practicalities and hurdles of taking on a commercial cropped woodland.
The woodland has a 200-year lease which passes to a trust to maintain the burial grounds. This will ensure its legacy for families whose loved ones are there – just like any church graveyard. Wood for telegraph poles was previously grown in Granville’s Woods, but as demand dried up, the woodlands became unmanaged, and the pine monoculture took over, preventing light from reaching the woodland floor. Claire explains that, “by thinning out the trees, opening the floor and creating habitat piles nature has returned, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, sparrow hawk, toads, hedgehogs, badgers, and deer, a diverse collection of wildlife.”
In 2022 the Woodland Burial Company will be working with Harold Lillekers & Sons to provide a full funeral service, cremation and transport to the woodland.

Going Out

ot your average 11th birthday party, but who wants to be average anyway?
My birthday is on the 17 December, right in the middle of all the Christmas celebrations and festivities. This year, I decided that I wanted to do something a little different and not Christmas related, so I chose Chesterfield Escape rooms as my party venue and Darwin & Bear for the afterparty with five of my closest friends. We arrived at the escape rooms and met our party leader Brad; he was funny and explained the game very well. I chose to do ‘rob the bank’ instead of the Christmas game or The Crazy Cat Lady game as I like solving mysteries.
Brad explained to us that that some ‘Bank Owners’ had stolen our family's gold, and we needed to get it back. Cousin Angie knows who stole the family gold. It’s midnight, and Angie backs her van into the side of Harman’s Bank. We had one hour to jump out and get the gold back.
When we first went into the escape room, we were bundled into the back of a van. Within a few minutes of us being in the room, Brad (party leader) told us to calm down as we were all very excited and giddy. Brad did some funny accents, which made us all laugh. We couldn’t believe how good he was at them. Now, I can’t say too much about the game as it would spoil it for you all! We had to escape from a series of rooms, which I think got more and more difficult. We also had to pick a Page 18
team captain, who was me (well, it was my birthday after all). I had to keep hold of this remote, and when it beeped, that meant that the ‘Security Guard’ was coming, and we had to hide. That part was exciting and fun. I have no idea how he didn’t hear or see us! We won! We had 60 minutes to escape and did it in 58! In the end, we made it out and stole 60 pieces of gold before breaking free in the van with Angie. Once the game had finished, we got to take a picture with our official ‘we escaped certificates’, and we went back downstairs. It was the best activity I have done for a birthday! We then went to Darwin & Bear, which is a video game restaurant. We played pool, ate pizza, drank Coca Cola and played on some old video games like Donkey Kong and Mario Kart, which I think my parents enjoyed more than us, haha! We loved Darwin and Bear and can’t wait to go back there. Apparently, kids eat free on Mondays!
I just want to thank The Chesterfield Escape Rooms and Darwin & Bear for making this the best birthday ever. It’s amazing what you can do in Chesterfield if you just know where to look.

M
eet George Hope. He’s a graphic designer and neighbour tenant at West Studios. His business, Skullship Design Studio, launched in September 2021, offering graphic design, digital artwork and illustration services for small businesses, charities, voluntary organisations and the public. George is autistic, and Skullship Design Studio is his new design business established by his mother, Christine Hope who helps out with the business management side of things. George is also supported by his PA, Pete Courtney, with funding via the DWP access to work scheme and business support and mentoring from the Princes Trust. George's focus is on creating the graphic design and digital artworks. It’s surprising to learn that 70% of autistic adults have no employment or work experience. One of the reasons for this is recognising and providing workplace adjustments to meet the individual's needs. By creating Skullship Design Studio, George is now able to fulfil his wish to have a meaningful job doing what he loves. George has always been a talented artist; from a young age he enjoyed the escapism that drawing presented. Dinosaurs and dragons were his passion as a young boy. Art was a way to Page 22
visualise his thoughts and share them with others. Senior school presented challenges with a lack of understanding of George’s needs. He moved to Brantwood Specialist school, where he felt more comfortable, and was given great support that allowed him to thrive as a learner. As a result, George achieved a range of GCSEs and a Level 2 BTEC in Creative Media Production. He also returned to drawing and creating character-based artwork with the help of his art teacher. Since leaving school, George has gone on to achieve: •

A Graphic Design Level 3 Diploma using distance learning of; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Aftereffects, Premierpro+ and Animate.

Progress was going well until COVID hit, and George had to work with his mentor to establish a new way of working. At this point George, Pete, and Christine began exploring possible options for employment. They realised that the best option would be to create a business with the right working environment for George.

Minimum pension age rise. What does this mean for pension savers? Mark Jones, Managing Director at Jones & Co.
Did you know that the normal minimum pension age (NMPA) is set to rise from 55 to 57 from 6th April 2028? The rise was confirmed in the UK Government’s Finance Bill in November. It also outlined the conditions that may enable some pension savers to keep a minimum pension age of 55 beyond 2028 and changed a draft rule that closed the window for transferring into a scheme to secure a protected pension age.
So, you may now be wondering how this rise and new conditions might affect you? Let’s explain. Protecting pension savers from scammers
If your pension scheme included the right for you to take benefits when you reach the age of 55 in its rules as at 11th February 2021, that age will be protected for you as an existing member. The original draft rules announced in early 2021 had allowed people to transfer to a scheme which had a protected retirement age of 55 if this was completed by 5th April 2023. That window was closed in November’s Finance Bill following concerns that scammers could force pension savers into rushing a transfer through and capitalising for their own gain.
We don’t particularly see this as a big problem; it’s more important that your pension scheme provides you with the flexibility and choice you need to have a comfortable retirement. If you can afford to retire at 55, there are other tax efficient ways to invest your savings other than a pension including ISAs, bonds and collectives. All of these would be included in your estate for inheritance tax, so it’s wise to reduce this potential liability by accessing them first in a tax efficient way and making the most of tax allowances and lower tax bands. If retiring at 55 isn’t viable for you financially, you could use other savings to bridge gaps but, if you do draw down on pension saving, remember that you’ll have to wait two more years before claiming your state pension at 67. Now’s the time to take professional advice
Whether you have a protected pension age scheme or not, now’s the time to take professional advice to ensure you’re fully in the picture with your pension. It’s also an ideal opportunity to review and potentially revise your retirement plans.
Who is affected by the rise?
If you’re one of those people without a protected pension age, this is what to expect: • • •
If you were born before 6th April 1971 you are unaffected as you’ll be aged 57 before 6th April 2028 when the rise comes into effect
If you were born after 5th April 1973, the earliest date you can access your pension benefits will be delayed by two years If you were born between 5th April 1971 and 5th April 1973, you’ll have a window from your 55th birthday to 6th April 2028 to take your benefits before the rise comes into effect.
Protected pension age schemes – the exception rather the norm
Schemes with protected pension ages are, in our experience, the exception rather than the norm and that means that there are likely to be many people having to accept this rise and wait two more years to age 57 for take their benefits.

My Running Diary Part 3: Grandad's Route Words & Images: Jack Jerram

y sharing my running diary, I wanted to show S40 readers the benefits of taking up a sport accessible to most people, one which requires very little equipment or initial skill and is totally free. I began my journey with a first run, stopping four times to catch my breath and taking an hour to recover but I’m glad I persevered – I’ve gone on to reap the benefits: better sleep, improved mental health and greater energy. Fitness hero of the pandemic, Joe Wicks, is quoted as saying,
“Exercise for your mental health and your body will follow.” I agree. Even Boris Johnson joined in, losing 14kg by running after contracting COVID-19 and wanting to be healthier. In concluding my diary, I wanted to provide a beginner’s route for any reader who has been thinking about starting or re-igniting their love of running - a run mapped out in our local area. When thinking about a circuit, I was inspired by my own Grandad! When he turned 40, he contracted Hepatitis B and was told that the long-term prognosis wasn’t good. Grandad decided that getting fit would give him a fighting chance of survival, so he took up running. I decided to retrace his steps 42 years later (see opposite page). Page 28
Grandad continued to run for five years until a doctor mentioned, in passing, that running wouldn’t help him beat Hepatitis B so he stopped, that very day! He’s still alive and well, still has the disease that almost killed him, but now, with medication, he’s able to lead a full and active life waving to me as I run past his house, using his first run as my new route. Finally, I would just like to personally thank anyone who has read my running articles over these past three months. It has truly been an honour to write about one of my greatest passions and get so much positive feedback. I created this article series to inspire others to run, so if any of my work has fuelled your passion for running too, it means more to me than you can imagine.

GRANDAD'S ROUTE •
Begin in Somersall Park carpark. Run past the old playground on your right, past the first small bridge, following the path to the second bridge.

Turn right over the bridge. Continue to follow the path enjoying the flat terrain, and head for the Walton Dam.

Cross a third bridge and turn immediately right. DO NOT CROSS the main bridge over River Hipper. Follow the meandering pathway until Walton Dam is on your right. Here’s a lovely opportunity to take in the variety of birdlife the water has to offer.

Run the length of Walton Dam, down the incline towards the end, until you reach the pedestrian lights at Walton Road.
•
Turn right up the hill, take a deep breath and brace yourself for a tough incline.
•
Turn right down Moorland View Road where there’s another family connection to my run - my Great Grandad helped to build lots of the houses that line the road here.
•
Run on the flat until you reach Brincliffe Close on your right and turn down it.
•
Follow this road to the fork-off right to Newhaven Close. Continue down Newhaven until you re-join Somersall Park path. Turn right.
•
Continue the path back to the second bridge and make your way back to the starting point.
Congratulations. You’ve survived your first run! A total of 2.6 km or 1.7 miles. Don’t worry if you have to stop running a few times. Just keep moving – carry on walking until the route flattens out or you feel able to try again. Try the route every 2 or 3 days, and you’ll soon stop walking and build up speed as well as a great sense of achievement.

A Green Alternative Words: Skye Harris Image: Niamh Weston With a growing awareness of the urgency we must take with matters surrounding the climate, we know that any plans to improve our surroundings are crucial. One of the simple things we can do to reduce our carbon emissions is to use greener methods of transport. There are many ways to do this - for example, getting the bus, walking, sharing a lift or riding your bike. Some of these are more viable than others at different times of the year and for different areas. Often, I hear that there are barriers to people being able to use green transport, such as the bus routes not covering where people live or no safe way to cycle alongside cars due to the lack of cycle paths.

While a recent open forum meeting held at the school showed mixed feelings about the plan, with passionate arguments on both sides, I'm looking forward to seeing the positive change in our community soon.
This was why I was overjoyed to hear there would finally be a cycle path on Chatsworth Road: a safe way for our children to get to and from school independently, and greenly and members of the local community will be able to travel by bike. It is currently worrying to see inexperienced cyclists rising down the middle of the road to avoid parked card or pedestrians. With the introduction of a cycle path, there will be a quicker and safer way for children to get to school without the help of their parents. Throughout school, many children cycle, and many who would like to be able to cycle, but don't feel comfortable due to the roads they would have to use. A very quick questionnaire in Brookfield’s Sixth Form Common Room - asking and explaining the plan for the cycle route – resulted in an overwhelming majority of students saying they would either benefit from or would like to see a cycle path that means there is another, safer and

On Remembrance Day, marking the end of World War One, Brookfield School commemorated people who have died in conflicts around the world. Students and staff gathered as one community and held a twominute silence to remember those who gave their lives.
Christmas is a time for joy, sharing, and family, but it is also a time of economic stress for many people across the UK.
Several Brookfield students also attended the procession from the church to the town hall, where the poppy cascade of over 40,000 poppies had been installed.
Through the school’s Christmas concert ‘A Tin to a Tenner’, Brookfield raised £200 for the Chesterfield Foodbank - and donated boxes full of food and other essential items, the audience bringing donations instead of paying for a ticket.
As well as wreath-laying, Brookfield’s Head Boy and Head Girl, Jack Mitchell and Alice Woodcock, delivered a solemn and respectful message with poems and speeches on the importance of never forgetting. Many students bought poppies and wore them with pride.

5 million people in the UK lived in food poverty between 2019 and 2020 - a scary 9% of the population, living with concerns about where their next meal will come from. Food Banks are vital to many people, especially around Christmas: last December more than 186,000 people were given three-day emergency food parcels (almost 80,000 of these going to children).
The show's carefully constructed programme featured music, dance and readings. From soloists to favourite Christmas duets and choral renditions; from solo dancers to whole-cast ensemble pieces; and from humorous to thoughtprovoking texts – the evening had something for everyone. One highlight was a sneak preview of a number from the cast of the next school show – 'Back to the Eighties' – scheduled for February. Throughout the winter, many people will struggle as heating bills, and many other costs rise. Donating helps alleviate some of this suffering. Back in 2016 I started working as a Project Manager with a company called Future Foundations. On my first day the COO (Chief Operating Officer), Pete Cuff, gave me a copy of David Allen’s Getting Things Done, stating, “it’s the closest I’ve been to a religious experience; this book changed my life.” So, I thought I had better read it! I learnt that:
The brain is for having ideas, not for holding them!
The David Allen method for stress-free productivity consists of five steps: capture, clarify, organise, reflect and engage. Capture really changed my life. Our brains work at a million miles per hour, constantly coming up with ideas and/or things that we could/should be doing. The first rule of getting things done is: capture everything! As soon as an idea or task pops into your head, write it down. Once you have written it down, your brain is free to move on to the next idea/task. Conversely, if you don’t write it down the idea/task will take up much of your time affecting, your productivity. I have the Microsoft to-do app on the front screen of my phone so I can always capture everything! The two-minute rule
Applying this rule to your inbox is life-changing. If a task takes two minutes or less, do it straight away! You'll find that most emails simply required a response to a question that took me two minutes or less to reply to! Each day I will seek out a local independent business, either one I already know or a new one to me, and send them a positive message, telling them what I like about their business. I'll ask them if they would like me to post out a copy of our magazine and email them a media pack.
I'll do this every day, so over a year, I'll have contacted 365 great local independent businesses, shared kindness each day and increased my chances of meeting new businesses and customers. It’s a daily, atomic habit that could compound to have a significant impact on the magazines!
There are two competing forces in your mind, learn to recognise and control them
Professor Peters explains that there are two sides to the mind: the human side and the chimp side. The chimp side controls emotions, both positive and negative, making decisions based on these. The human side of the brain is rational and calm and makes decisions based on facts. Learning when our chimp is in charge and how to control it will have a profound impact on us all. This was truly a gift that kept on giving Sometimes it is difficult to find a gift for your children or their families when they are proud people and don’t want ‘charity’, yet you know they could be struggling to make ends meet.
I solved this and wanted to share my solution with you. But first a little about my family. My daughter Ruth and husband Mike are both NHS frontline workers, and they have three children Sienna aged 10, Frank aged 8 and little William aged 5. We all get along really well and see each other regularly so that’s how I know that things can be financially tough for them.
With Christmas only a few months away, my husband and I tried to find a way of giving something that would last longer than the latest toy or electronic gadget. I collect the children from school on Tuesdays and Fridays for Ruth, so I know the teachers well now. One week Frank’s teacher stopped me as I collected him and asked how much reading he did at home because he was behind in his reading levels. I was shocked and discussed it with Ruth and Mike, who were aware Frank was a little behind in his reading, but with their shifts, it was really only my husband and I who actually heard him read at home. It worried me, not his being behind, but that Frank thought he was ‘thick’ and that he would never be any good at reading. Then I met an old neighbour of ours, and in a conversation over coffee catching up about our families, she told me that her granddaughter, who is the same age as Frank, had also struggled with her reading until she went to Kip and a lady named Jo. She said that her granddaughter had improved her reading age by two years in six months with Jo.
I contacted Jo who was lovely and was very happy to meet Frank, have a chat and do a free assessment to find his true ability levels in English, Spelling and Maths. Immediately I went round to Ruth and Mike and asked if it was ok to get Frank tested. They were ok with it but very concerned that, as Kip is private, it would be outside their budget. I managed to stop myself offering to pay for it and arranged for Frank to meet Jo the following week.
Jo really got on with Frank and he loved her and came out saying that Jo said he wasn’t ‘thick’ and that every time he made a mistake, it meant he was getting cleverer about finding out how to get things right. Also, his Maths was very much higher than his age which made him very happy and proud of himself. On walking him home, he said, ‘Grandma can I go and see Jo and do some of her fun stuff on the computer next week?’ I said, ‘Well, we will see what mummy and daddy have to say.’ At this point his little face fell and he said ‘They’ll say no because we don’t have any money’. We talked to them, and as Frank was so keen to go back to Jo, we said we would give Frank the present of 10 weeks with Jo and see how that went. They agreed and Frank was really happy with that. So it all began…
Now three years later Frank is still with Jo, and he achieved amazing SAT scores that set him up for his new secondary school in September. So, there you are! A Gift to our grandchild that keeps on giving and will open doors that might have remained closed for the rest of his life.

Through Wendy’s pioneering work, as well as the team of doctors and specialists she has supporting her, not only has the discovery of the BRCA1/2 gene saved this family; but the lives of 100,000’s of others affected by the disease. The NHBCH is an invaluable service, the helpline has directly helped many thousands of women in the UK and indirectly. It could also have impacted many hundreds of thousands throughout Europe.

With lyrics written by Becky Measures (BBC Radio Sheffield) and producer Scott Ford, Thankyou (It’s because of you) tells the astonishing story of the helpline and the family’s history. This is the first time three generations of the family’s women have beat what they feel is a certain fate and defied the odds to be here together. Scott says, “Becky gave me the words she'd written. Chesterfield CAMRA 2022 Beer Festival Walkabout The Chesterfield CAMRA Beer Festival 2022 is on Walkabout! The usual February beer festival is not taking place in 2022 due to time restrictions during the recent pandemic so instead a group of Real Ale pubs are joining in to put on their finest beers, ciders and craft ales are looking forward to welcoming you over two days: Friday 4 and Saturday 5 February 2022.
The pubs taking part are spread over three areas: The Brampton Mile, Chesterfield Town Centre and Whittington Moor. During the weekend some of the pubs will be putting on something special, from Tap takeovers, bands, street food and much more. There is a QR code (shown) which includes details of beers on offer, bus timetables and a bit of info on what is available at each pub.

Transition Chesterfield is planning to hold an event focusing on repair-related issues in the Derbyshire and East Midlands area next year. The event will be held at Chesterfield Assembly Rooms on Saturday 19 March 2022 and is supported by The Restart Project and Chesterfield Borough Council. It will have 2 strands: • •
a networking opportunity for those already running repair cafés (or similar) and those wishing to start one.

The Brookfield Parents and Friends Association, and Brookfield Community School art department have created a stylish 2022 calendar.
Wayne Fallon, head of the art department said, "The quality of entries has been outstanding, with pupils, parents and even teachers giving great thought to how happiness can be captured in a picture and is testament to the creativity within our community."
Rebecca Hudson from the parents and friends association added, "It’s been really exciting seeing the photos roll in gradually throughout the year, some have really made us laugh. Each month has been sponsored by a local business, and it’s great to have their support, many of whom kindly donate to the school every year."

WINTER GARDENING TIPS Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave them empty, doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g., black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes the light, perhaps even an old carpet. This prevents weeds from growing and the goodness leeching away from the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter.
Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose Super Aquadulce, a hardy variety. A greenhouse or windowsill can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow seeds for peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions.
This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though, only plan for plants where there’s space. Winter is the best time to dig the heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost, but don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.
Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop the central heating drying them out. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. The eagle eyed will have spotted that these are repeated from the last edition ... apologies but somehow we got a little ahead of ourselves! Page 48
Make leaf mold. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire into a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it? This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year.

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder and Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS, who are coming to Sheffield, York & Manchester this February.
Having retired from the live scene in 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague and guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’, released in November 2020, signalled the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound.
The band's sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitarheavy melodies, like Seattle in the late 80's/90's. “Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that, Name:

elcome back Spireites and let me start by getting straight to the point. I'll not beat about the bush here. No Siree. I'm going to just cut right to the chase and spit it right on out. Ready? Well let's just take a moment to get focused and I will begin. Err where was I? Oh yeah, we lost. BUT we did score a goal against the kings of Europe, so that's a fantastic memory for Asante after coming on a sub for us in the second half. Anyway, let's move on, back to the bread and butter of league football and getting us back into League 2. But before we do, we should really recognise the significance of that game.
To play Chelsea, the Spireites first had to see off League Two's Salford City. Liam Mandeville and James Kellermann bagged a goal apiece to secure the blues their place in the FA Cup third round draw, the first time since 2015.
Over 6000 Chesterfield fans travelled down to Stamford Bridge to witness what should have been the CFC v CFC cup final of 1997. For many Spireites the game was one for the memory banks, a match to brag “I was there!” The FA Cup is for many a dream cup where normal rules of football don't apply. Giant killings do happen and will continue in the years to come. That's the magic of it all in my book but it wasn't to be for us this season. Now, before we focus on our ongoing league 2021/22 season, let's go back 117 years for brief second. Believe it or not we've played Chelsea before, prior to this season's fixture, 7 times to be exact. It should have been 8 but due to an incompetent referee back in 1997 against Middlesbrough, we got robbed. If you don't know what I mean by that, ask your dad. (Hint, Jamie Hewitt scored that famous header). Anyway, back in October 1905 Chesterfield Town (as we were known back then) played the first ever fixture against Chelsea in the old Division 2, which we Page 60
won with the only goal of the game away down in Chelsea. It was also Chelsea's first ever defeat at Stamford Bridge. All in all, between 1905 and 1950 we played a few more times, losing 4 and drawing twice to be precise. A few were in the FA Cup too. Right, history lesson over, back to the present.
With injuries still a huge problem in the Spireite camp, with key players still out, a few positive risks had to be made by James Rowe prior to the Chelsea tie to stay top of the league. Asante and Gunning started in the squad against FC Halifax and in my opinion sat pitch side, both didn't look 100% match fit. Gunning sporting a face mask from his broken cheek/nose didn't seem as confident as usual in the air going up for the challenging headers and Asante didn't really look as fit as he did last season. Yes, it's been a while since Asante hobbled off the field many, many months ago but maybe Rowe should have rested him longer? He only came on as sub in the next game against Kings Lynn in the dying minutes from the end, possibly just to see the game out. We won though 1-0 with another Mandeville goal on the 51st minute. Jack Clarke also re ruptured his hamstring after being subbed on and then was left injured during the Halifax match. He's now added to Rowes recovery list, and out for the foreseeable future. It's important to mention though to be fair, Clarke did net the equaliser just before he departed to earn a crucial point with a 1-1 draw in a scrappy end, which at least kept us at the top of the league. Halifax started and ended that game in second place. Was funny though to hear their fans chanting “We are top of the league” when they were 1-0 up, until Clarke's goal went in, and we reclaimed the honours of the chant...and the top spot! Now let's just hope we stay there until the season ends and we get back to the football league! COYB's!
