March COPY DATE FRIDAY 31st JANUARY

Hello and welcome to the winter edition of S41 Local Magazine. As we enter our second year and decade, publishing S41 Local Magazine, we reflect on a fantastic 2019 and look forward to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020. In 2019 we distributed over 60,000 copies of the magazine over ten editions, with over 100 local businesses choosing to advertise with us! We are humbled... This month's front cover pays homage to the lead gutiarist of the band PULP, Mark Webber. Mark was born and raised in Chesterfield and won the Mercury Music Prize for the album 'A different class'. Not bad for a town lad! In this edition we reveal who won our Cover Artist of the year competion, meet up and coming band the 'Levis' and learn how to set intentions for the year, as opposed to resolutions. We have an update on all the major developments happening in Chesterfield in 2020 and learn more about the amazing community group, Spital Arts. As always our What's on pages are jam packed with fantastic local events for all the family. If you wish to list your event, group or community, please do get in touch, it's absolutely free to be listed. We simply cannot thank you all enough for reading our magazine in 2019 and making a conscious effort to buy services and goods from our local advertisers. All that is left to say is happy new year and we hope this one is as good as the last. Peace, Love and Positivity Simon and Bekah. T: 07716014002 E: simon@s41local.com

Three Cottages Reflect and progress

Words Simon Paterson & Nicky Wisniewski Images: Andrew Haslam & Three Cottages 2019 was a big year for John, Nicky and the team at the Three Cottages and the pub is thriving, creating its own family and sense of community. We asked John and Nicky to reflect on their 2019 journey and what exciting events and developments we can expect to see in 2020! The tasting events went really well, particularly the whiskey and gin one’s. We even had a private booking for a 40th birthday. There was a lot of gin tasting at that one! Says Nicky Our August bank holiday family fun day was a huge success, attracting families from all over Chesterfield. We made lots of new friends that day, the weather was fantastic, and the pub was thriving. Same time next year? Christmas was a massive success, with over 500 people choosing to visit us over the festive period. It was lovely to see the S41 family dining with us on Christmas day alongside over 40 other families. Thank you to everyone who chose to spend their Christmas day with us. The Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival was a real highlight for me, says John. Cooking our Cambodian Street Curry, in front of a live audience was scary, but very exciting! It was a fantastic experience and I hope to be back next year. 2020 sees some big developments at the Three Cottages. With a new, big, car park and a full kitchen makeover. We are looking forward to the completion of our orangery and garden, also enjoying a drink in the sun this summer with our customers. With valentines and mother’s day bookings already over 40% full, it's sure to be another busy and successful year at the Cottages.

ike many artists, Amy Marples is quiet, unassuming and not a fan of blowing her own trumpet! So, given her abundance of talent, I thought it best we do it for her. After following Amy’s Instagram page and being very impressed by her unique, instantly recognisable style we asked her to design us an S41 Christmas Card and were blown away by the result! It perfectly captured our historic and beloved town centre at the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas. We sent out the card to many of our friends, family and advertisers and the response was fantastic, with many of them taking a picture of it and posting it on social media. We wanted to know more about the local girl born and raised in Clowne, so we asked her to design our first front cover of the decade and interviewed her about her inspirations and ambitions. What was the first drawing you can remember doing as a child? I can’t remember exactly what it was. Fairies were always a very popular choice, but any sort of figures really. My sister and I both had dolls houses, and I’d draw any new characters for us to make stories with. I’d also make them different outfits and hairstyles that we could change them into, and then attach them on with Blu-tack. That must have been some of my earliest ‘art’ besides random scribbles! How old were you when you realised you had a talent worth sharing? There’s a lot of people I have to thank over the years for giving me the confidence to share my art and help me improve. I think it was in Junior school where I realised that I liked art, and that other people liked my drawing too. I always went to the afterschool art club, and we had a school Christmas card competition. I think I won that two or three times! Even now I still make homemade cards for my relatives. If you were stranded on a dessert island and could only have one of your illustrations with you, which one would it be?

Page 6

I’ve done a few drawings of my sister over the years, but recently I painted her in gouache. A lot of the time I have mixed feelings about my art, but I really like that painting. It’s A5, so it would be easy to take with me, and she’s always been extremely supportive of me. Maybe if I had that I’d feel like she was with me and it would give me some motivation! Does art run in the family? I’m probably the one most into drawing, but we’re all a very creative bunch and like the arts in one form or another. My mum studied art at college, and she was always very helpful with critiquing my work. She had the perfect balance of praise and criticism. My sister is also an excellent photographer. I understand drawing isn’t your only talent and you have just graduated from University with a degree in creative writing (go you). Are you looking to combine writing and drawing? You could be the next Roald Dahl/Quentin Blake…rolled in to one! I did an illustration to go with the very first poem I wrote for my MA called ‘Stars of The Night’, as I thought my blog would look better if I had some images to go with the text. But I do love the idea of combining my writing and art together. A while ago I tried to do a couple of characters, but I’d like to redraw those now. During my last year at university, I started getting into graphic novels, and I thought that maybe I’d like to try something like that in the future. As we start a new decade, if you could live in any past decade, which one would you choose and why? Maybe the 1960s? I love nostalgia for the past, but it’s hard to pick one when you start to think of all the downsides. But there was a lot of good things that started then too. I’m also quite a fan of pop art and psychedelia as I love bright colours, and a lot of the music I listen to seems to be from the 1960s. I blame my parents for that…

Amy E Marples Art amyemarplesart

Aside from being an Artist, if you could do, or be anything else, what you be and why? I can’t imagine not drawing or writing. For ages I was really sure about being a vet once I’d left school, but I changed my mind. I think really I’d have to say an author, since books and writing are some of my other passions. Hopefully that will come true one day! What’s was it like growing up in Clowne in the 90’s? Has it changed much since you were a kid? In some ways it almost seems like a different place, it feels so much bigger now. Sadly, it’s lost some of its highlights over the years. We were once known for our Christmas lights display which was incredible to me as a kid. It felt really magical seeing all of the houses completely covered in lights. Unfortunately, one year a lot of our neighbours suffered really badly from theft and vandalism, so nearly everyone stopped doing the lights. On a more positive note, there’s recently been some new additions, as a few local businesses have now opened up in some of the empty buildings. If you could host a dinner party and invite three guests to join you, who would you invite and why? Do they have to be living? If not, first choice would be John Lennon as he had many interests similar to mine, which I think would make good conversation. I’m a little bit obsessed with him! I’d also invite Grayson Perry as I’ve always admired his ability with different art forms. Finally, I’d like Angela Carter. She’s one of my favourite authors and I aspire to be as good as her. I think that would make a very interesting guest list! What’s next for Amy Marples? As much as I’ve loved being at university, I’m ready for doing something else now. I’m definitely up for trying to publish some of my writing, and getting onto the next steps with my art. I’m currently in the process of putting both onto a blog as it feels like my art and writing are still very separate things, and I’d love to bring them together. Hopefully, this decade will be the start of a new creative journey for me.

Business Change

iDeal Carpets is no more.

Welcome to iDeal Flooring! Words & Images: Paul Chapman

T

he same high-quality friendly service you’d expect from our local business remains, but Kevin Howarth from iDeal Flooring is excited to now offer a range of carpets on the roll to take away, and a selection of roll end bargains.

“It’s also nice to be away from the ‘offer syndrome’ where no one ever knows the true price of a product. I keep my prices keen all year round, offer free grippers, door bars and underlay etc on products above £11.99 a square meter. It keeps things simple.”

“The move to 362 Chatsworth Road took place over the Christmas period, we literally picked up the old shop but have added stock to take away. The new unit is larger and much easier to access, I now stock roll ends and a selection of carpets from the showroom direct. No need to order, just roll up, choose what you need, and either take it away, or we can arrange delivery and installation”, explains Kevin.

Kevin still offers an uplift service, where, for a small fee, his installers will remove your old flooring and take away all the rubbish. They also have Snap Finance available which allows you to spread the cost of your new flooring.

The unit is the old Chatsworth Motor Spares unit, next to Crown Decorators Centre and opposite the Curtain Studio. “You can see the back of my unit from the car park at Morrisons, we back straight onto it, so a short walk from the store or drive round and park right outside, there’s loads of parking space right next to the door” says Kevin. The same range of flooring to order is still available and there is no shortage of products, including carpets. There are a wide selection on display in the showroom, plus luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), laminate, engineered wood flooring plus the new addition, of roll stock, roll ends and laminates in store to take away. You may recall us saying back in the summer how Kevin had been at 131 Chatsworth Road development for eight years and set up on his own after a life working for the large carpet and flooring retail chains. He is keen to repeat that “with the wealth and experience from a long life in the flooring trade, I was able to transition to my own store without much pain, although what I never expected was how much more time I’d have at home, as I travelled a lot, and how much I’d feel part of the community. “You build relationships when your customers are nearly all local, do a good job and people recommend you, word starts to spread. Page 12

The thing I noticed is how much like his old showroom the new one looks. Same open ceiling, same white walls, same flooring samples underfoot, just a lot wider and with the new stock to take away on display. “It’s been a busy few weeks getting everything ready and moving across to the new location but I’m very happy with how it’s looking. “People have been very positive about how it looks and feels. It’s also great to be so close to the other home-based stores. People have called into Crown for paint, popped in to browse and ordered new carpet in the same trip, something the old location couldn’t offer. “It’s like a DIY store, flooring, paint and soft furnishings all in one handy location. “If you're a landlord, the new roll stock is very competitively priced so ideal if you have a property that needs completely reflooring.” Kevin is clearly looking forward to life at 362 Chatsworth Road, offering the new additional services and in his new location. If you are looking for new flooring, be sure to call in and, as always, please don’t forget to tell him you saw him in S40 Local! iDeal Flooring 362 Chatsworth Road Chesterfield S40 2DQ

Spital Arts Culture and cakes Words: Lyn Pardo Images: Lyn Pardo

S

pital Arts are a group of friends and neighbours who are interested in the arts, and who put on events for likeminded people in the area.

We started off at a party when some of us were about to retire. We have long known that our four streets contain a wealth of talented people, and we decided to put on an exhibition of their work. That first 'Arts Spectacular' showcased photography, calligraphy, painting and lino cuts, jewellery and crafts. In the evening we had a fashion show and concert, and it was all well received. Since then the events have split into two strands, the arts exhibition every summer, and evening concerts and events running throughout the year We have received sponsorship over the years, enabling us to buy a stage, a screen and a basic sound system. Our local Councillor and the Central

Page 16

England Co-op have been most generous. We also bought cushions for the chairs at St Leonard's Mission, where we hold all our events, so our guests can sit in comfort! We have our own tables which we make available for other users of the Mission. Our mugs feature three of the artists we have enjoyed. All our events involve cake and I am convinced that is why people return, loyally, so often. Some of our bakers are legends, and we try to always have a gluten free choice. Over the six years of our existence we have added to our artist list and have watercolours, pottery, printing, woodworking, quilting, enamelwork, stained glass and more. Work is exhibited either as a display or as a selling stall. So long as the artist has a Spital link, all are welcome, and we are very fortunate to have so much talent locally.

www.s41local.com

Our evening events have included music from soloists, bands and choirs; dance; a spinning and weaving workshop; plays; films and storytelling with accompanying installations. We have some events from the Live and Local support network, which enables us to put on events we could not otherwise afford. We maintain a mailing list so interested folk will always know what is coming up, and we have a comments book at the Arts Spectacular Exhibition where potential exhibitors can get in touch. A lot of our artists make themselves known in this way, or by word of mouth, as we are all local.

Recently we have provided a card reading facility, and tickets are available from Eventbrite in advance. People can book online and by phone, so it is easy to come, whatever your circumstances. We do sell out some events, so make sure you are on our list! Spitalarts spitalarts@gmail.com Our venue: St Leonard’s Mission, Spital S41 0H

We publish a guide to forthcoming events which is available at events and at the local Tourist Information Centre. We also have a Facebook page.

S41 Presents:

The Levis Influences, pot noodles and gigs Words: Simon Paterson Images: The Levis

T

he Levis are an up and coming four-piece indie/garage band from Derbyshire. With 22,000 streams on Spotify in 2019 and listeners in over 62 different countries, it’s time for us to champion and support them as they strive to achieve their dream of Rock ‘n’ Roll stardom. Listening to their track ‘Clear Skies’ it’s clear they have been influenced by early 90’s Britpop, and the noughties Sheffield scenes. With melodies reminiscent of Catfish and the Bottlemen and Milburn. So, who are the Levis? Leading the charge on vocals and guitar is Max, bringing up the bass is Toby, banging the drums is Jack and adding the melody on guitar is Tommy. So, how did you all meet? Max: me and Toby have been mates since school, we both weren’t really interested in playing music at school at all and we both hated music lessons. Toby: I just used to mess about in lessons to be fair! Max: then, in our last year we just decided to start a band. We taught ourselves how to play guitar and bass with YouTube videos. Simon: I laid a wooden floor in the house with my mate’s tools and the power of YouTube videos. It’s the way forward! Toby: then we found Tommy through Instagram 'Cos he’d been posting all these guitar videos, I just asked him if he wanted

Page 20

to come and play with us in Max’s garage without ever meeting him or owt, and he did! Max : Jack is Tommy’s brother and is mint on the drums, so just made sense to get him in the band as well. How would you describe your sound? Tommy: I’d say it’s like raw indie garage rock, we’ve all listened to bands like the strokes and the cribs for years so we’ve got a similar sound to them. Max: yeah a lot of the simple guitar riffs are inspired by that late 70s post punk sound with bands like ‘Television’ I’d say. Toby: simple catchy tunes. It works. It’s 1am, you have just finished a gig in Chesterfield town centre, and you are starving. Where do you go to eat and what do you order? Max: gotta be LFC, think that’s the only place me and me mates have ever gone after a night out in chesterfield, got to give my mate max hartshorn a mention in this if we’re talking about LFC, cos he loves that place. Jack: maccies all day! Tommy: i’d buy a king curry pot noodle from big Tesco Toby: the Best Kebab Pizza, and get a sloppy Donner with garlic mayo and chips Simon: The body is a temple and all that lads, I get it!

www.s41local.com

Which do you feel is the best song you have written and why? Max : if we’re talking about all of the songs, I’d probably say our new tracks that we haven’t released yet. Out of the released songs I’d say ‘underrated’, it got played on BBC introducing… Jack: undderatted, has to be! Tommy: favourite, is probs honey I’m alright, the guitar riff after the chorus is banging… Toby: open your eyes 'Cos we’ve played it for ages, and we open all our sets with it

Simon: Not fans of the Strokes then! You can catch the lads playing the following gigs in January and February: 25th January – The Leadmill, Sheffield 4th February – Café Totem, Sheffield 29th February – Suckerfest, Sheffield The LEVIS Thelevisband The LEVIS

If you could support one band on tour in 2020 who would it be? Max: the Strokes or the Cribs Jack: the Strokes Tommy: would have to be the Strokes Toby: the strokes Cos the first song me and max learnt to play together was someday

Growth

Comfort is the enemy of progress Be SMART about your intentions Words & Images: Nathan Hamer

T

his Article came to life through a 'Christmas Catch up' with Simon, Bekah, 'Nanna Sue', and Florie (aged 2). All of us; even Florie in her own nonconversational way, being positive people, it was only natural something positive would come out of it. In this case we got talking about me writing another article. 'Pilock in Poland' was mentioned a few times as I'm living in Poland until July, and at times can be compared to Karl Pilkington (An Idiot Abroad). However, in the end it was decided that I should write one on 'New Year Resolutions' or rather 'New Year Intentions'. So here it is: The concept of New Year Intentions was through Simon's input, and rightfully so, as resolutions are 'resolute' and imply that they are final; whereas intentions are more flexible and allow more space for adjustment. Flexibility and being free to adjust are key components of setting goals. This is because if your target is rigid and fixed, and if you are not achieving that target, it will only make you feel worse and like you are losing. On the other hand, if you feel free to adjust based on your performance, then there is more chance of you achieving your goal and feeling like you're winning. For example, if I set a goal (a resolution) to stop smoking, every cigarette I have through that process would feel like a loss, and in a couple of weeks I would probably give up. But if I set a goal (an intention) to smoke three less cigarettes a day, then I have more freedom to find a target that suits me best in each step of the process. Such as in the first week, only one cigarette less because I’m finding it too difficult, or after one month increase to five less because I'm beginning to feel comfortable. Which leads onto the next point:

Page 22

Comfort is the enemy of progress! To achieve anything in life you need to step outside your comfort zone. This may be difficult at first but once you get past that first hurdle of mental resistance, then you will start to gain momentum and the results will start to show. If you are a more visual person then you can see the diagram on the right hand page. I'll do my best to explain this. Firstly, we have your 'comfort zone'. Now this might be you, retreated in your covers, binge watching a series on Netflix, stuffing yourself with left-over chocolate from selection boxes; although that is a little on the extreme end! Your comfort zone is exactly how it sounds - the place you feel most comfortable. Now please don't get it confused, we all need our comfort zone and it is there for a reason. After a long week we all need a few hours to switch off, and just like physical growth, you need rest for effective mental growth. However, the danger comes when you spend too much time in that place and start to stagnate. Next there is your 'fear zone' this is that voice in your head, in Buddhism it is referred to as your 'monkey mind', that tells you "No we don't 'need' to do that what's the point?" or "It's best to do it tomorrow when you haven't got X or Y going on". This is something you need to work past, and the mental resistance I mentioned earlier. It is potentially the most dangerous zone to be in when working towards a goal, as your emotions will take over and you will not only let your own thoughts get in the way of your progress, but other people’s opinions too. As awful as this state is, there is no way around it, and requires you to recognise you are there and just push through.

www.s41local.com

After you have pushed through though, you are rewarded by being in your learning zone. This is the place where you start to see things more systematically and approach your goal head on. It will materialise by you doing some research into the subject you wish to improve, or if research doesn't apply to your goal, then this could also be you learning more about yourself and how you make the most progress with the least resistance. Lastly comes your growth zone, here is where you will reap what you have sown and begin to see the improvement in yourself. Which could be you stepping on the scales and seeing yourself 6 pounds lighter, taking a sigh of fulfilment after finishing that book you were given for Christmas, or seeing a clean and empty email inbox. You will have found purpose and feel confident in your ability to continue improving yourself. I hope that came across as clear as I intended, but please also remember that this isn't a linear process and will be a journey of ups and downs.

Unfortunately understanding and recognising your current position in your journey is only a small part of achieving a goal, the rest is simply hard work. I know at the start of a new year it also almost like there is something in the air (the winds of change if you want to get poetic about it). But always remember that with each passing day, hour, and minute there are new possibilities and space to achieve your full potential as a human being. Now I understand that there is a lot of new information to take in there and nothing really to guide you in creating goals, so here are a few things that I found helped me in getting stuff done. The most effective tool I use is setting 'S.M.A.R.T targets': Specific, Measurable, Attainable, and Time Based. In a world where everything is becoming 'Smart': Smart TV's, Smart meters, Smart lights, and Smart houses. It is vital to ensure you keep with times and make your targets smart as well. An example of a SMART target would be - I will go to Queen's Park gym three times a week before/after work. This is specific because I've stated a date

Please Mention S41 Local

Page 23

Growth and location. Measurable because I've stated three times (Like in the first paragraph this is free to adjust).

Don't beat yourself up if you fall, a mistake is only a failure when we choose not to correct it!

Attainable because three times isn't out of reach for where I'm at personally. And time based because I've said each week. I love SMART targets because they're extremely subjective and I can suit them to exactly what I need.

I truly hope these words will spur you on to take lasting action and please understand this article is only a fragment of information out there to guide you. Just like we have our physical diet, we have a mental diet. So, make sure for every Netflix series you watch, you listen to a good podcast or a read a good book.

As well as setting SMART targets one of the best things to do is form habits and routines. Once you are in a routine it makes it much easier to move through the different 'zones' and takes a lot less resistance. It is said it takes 30 days to break an old habit and 30 days to form a new one, although this is just theory. Finally, something to never take for granted is the company you keep. It is massively invaluable to spend your time with positive people, as W. Clement Stone said 'you are a product of your environment. I have both seen and experienced that firsthand. To recap: 'Comfort is the enemy of progress' 'Each new day, hour, and minute is a chance to achieve your full potential', 'You are a product of your environment, so if you're not happy then change it'. And my final piece of advice is that 'Perfection doesn't exist, and 'perfect is the enemy of good'.

Chesterfield XR We chat with Chesterfield Extinction Rebellion to understand why they are fighting for our planet. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Adobe Stock

Page 26

www.s41local.com

X

R, or Extinction Rebellion to use their full name, have a growing number of supporters who believe that the world we inhabit is not an endless resource to be used and abused, and it’s down to us to make some changes to ensure that future generations can enjoy a long time as custodians. XR have gained notoriety for their recent protests in London, where their profile has been raised through peaceful action, bringing traffic in the city to standstill. A poignant comment I heard came from radio and TV presenter Chris Evans on his morning breakfast show. He mentioned how clean and peaceful the city of London was without the traffic. It was a pleasant place to be and people occupied the streets and moved about without any difficulty. Some commented how close together parts of the city are when you can walk without the noise and pollution affecting your personal wellbeing. Children get it, but it’s our actions today that will have a greater impact on their futures. When XR went into Spire Juniors to explain who they are and why they act, they were met by suggestions from the children including: a pool of electric cars, use one from the pool when you need it; and about how they love wildlife and creatures and want to save them all. In past S40 Local’s when we have asked young people of senior school age to contribute articles to the magazine, many of the topics considered and published, have focused on the environment and climate change. Whatever your views, 97% of scientists now agree that our planet is changing, and we are the cause, so I feel it’s right to talk about XR and let you make your own decision. The group are active locally and trying to raise awareness of the issues we face; I am meeting Michelle Cadet-Rose and Colin Harrison from Chesterfield XR. “People think it’s about getting arrested” says Michelle, “but that’s not the case at all, for every single person that does get arrested there are ten that do not. “Not everyone is out there demonstrating. We have support from many people, doctors, lawyers, senior people, young people and this support comes in many ways, behind the scenes, nonviolent directaction training, legal support training, social media support etc to name a few. “Colin and I have taken part in events locally and in London where the depth of support has been amazing.”

What exactly is XR? “XR is a rebellion against us becoming extinct”, scientists say we are heading for a disaster quite quickly, our Government want carbon neutrality by 2050 but the scientists say we need to act much sooner. “The scientists say there is a ‘tipping point’, a point where we see a change in our environment that cannot be reversed, this is when our carbon production from gases and waste exceeds the rate at which the planet can deal with it”. “30 years ago scientist made predictions about signs on climate change that would be apparent by 2050, but these signs are here today, 30 years earlier than forecast.” Michelle continues, “the things I take from XR are the facts: sea levels are changing, coastal areas are being affected now, people crisis’ exist as people migrate inland and towards the global north. “More locally, we see widespread repeats of ‘once in a lifetime floods’ in Catcliffe, and vast fires in the Peak District. Signs that things are changing.” XR have no political ideology, they are completely aimed at the environmental crisis and promote love and understanding. They are nonviolent in every way and have no single leader, people take positions within the group, it’s more like a community where people take roles that suit them and contribute overall in the end goals, which are to: 1. Tell the truth and repeat what the scientists are saying 2. Act now 3. Form Citizens assemblies The group believe in deliberative democracy, a form of democracy in which deliberation is central to decision-making and in groups that represent all demographics. How have XR acted locally? In Chesterfield, the group have taken action against Derbyshire County over pensions investment choices. They have “photo-bombed” a polar bear (apparently not a real one) used as a festive attraction by Chesterfield Borough Council on Vicar Lane, to highlight the bear's environments disappearing; and most recently choregraphed a routine next to Hornsbridge Roundabout to raise awareness of traffic pollution related deaths. What is the best response an XR action can have? “For people to realise that the crisis is real,” answers Michelle, “to look at the science that’s out there and make some choices about what difference can be made personally”.

Page 27

Community “We need local and national government to make positive change. For instance, we see councils declaring climate emergencies but then agreeing new airports”. “We need real infrastructure change, citizens' assemblies to help deliver localism, solutions that meet the immediate needs of the communities we live in. Give people the background info they need to consider how they can make a change.” “There are some pockets of excellence that already exist. From these groups, ideas result that are implemented and can be replicated. In Europe, some citizens have agreed to pay more tax to fund local change as they see the immediate outcome and are prepared to pay for it.” Locally there are a number of organisations that exist and to some extent share common aims Plastic Free Chesterfield, Transition Chesterfield, the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign and Create Change, for instance. I can understand how some people may not want to be associated with XR, they don’t want to appear militant. Michelle assures me they are not trying to be difficult but sometimes you need to make a step change and raise awareness … and it might be a bit painful for some for a short while. “Some people’s view is that XR won’t make a difference, but what if no one took a stance? All we are doing is simply trying to raise awareness and would welcome anyone to get involved. People can bring whatever skills they have to help the cause”. “XR brings people together, we meet on the first Tuesday of the month at Monkey Park and if you want to be part of the change, drop us an email or search us out on FB.” In January and February, the film ‘2040’ will be shown locally. It depicts what life could look like if we successfully make the changes necessary in line with scientific suggestions; and on 21 March 2020, XR will be holding a fundraising evening at the Phoenix Room, Chester Street. If people want to help but don’t want to be activists, XR hold introductory sessions on the first Tuesday of each month, at 6:30pm, before their usual meeting at Monkey Park. That way you can find out what they're like and see if you want to become more involved - they have all sorts of subgroups for different activities. XRChesterfieldandNEDerbyshire XRCaNED

Some Sample Facts • The climate is extremely complicated; a 1.5 degree rise in global temperature doesn't mean everywhere will get slightly warmer, as the air over land masses will heat up considerably more than that over the oceans; • The current disruption to local weather (droughts in Australia, floods in Indonesia, temperatures well above freezing in Moscow etc.) is exactly what was predicted by climate scientists - it's just happening much, much sooner than anticipated; • Subsidies to fossil fuel industries in the UK are over £10 billion a year; • The world's insect population has fallen by about 60% since the 1970s; you might not like insects, but they are essential for all life on earth. • Lake Chad in Africa has reduced to 10% of it's previous size in the last 50 years; • At current rates of warming, all the world's coral reefs are likely to die in the lives of people alive today; • 1% of British residents are responsible for nearly a fifth of all oversees flights; the 10% most frequent British flyers took more than half of all international flights in 2018. 48% of the population did not take a single flight abroad in the last year; • The 11 warmest years ever recorded have all occurred since 2002; • It is predicted that all New Zealand's 3000 glaciers will disappear completely by 2100; • Domestic CO2 emissions have fallen 27% in the UK between 1990 and 2014; however, once imports from trade in goods is included this drops to only an 11% - and excludes shipping and aviation!

S41 Family

The Dad Diaries Words & Images: Simon Paterson

D

espite getting made redundant from my fulltime job mid-December, this Christmas was the best one yet! I am not including the Christmas I received a Super Nintendo with Super Tennis. My dad purchased the console two months prior to Christmas so he could practice and beat me on Christmas day. He was hugely disappointed when I dished out what can only be described as a severe whopping on my first go! To this day I am still unsure as to whether it was pride on his face or disappointment, I suspect the latter. December is a busy time for us with several birthdays, including our eldest’s Eva’s. This year she was presented with the option of either having a party with her mates or going to a new city with her family, making memories and gaining life experience. She chose the city break with the family. This was Bekah’s brilliant idea and we proceeded to book a couple of days in Dublin over the festive period. What I did find very confusing was that on the day of her actual birthday, I was told we were going to Laser Tag in Sheffield and I was to collect several of her friends on the way. After Laser we were taking them out for food and the girls will also receive party bags at the end! Now, forgive if I am wrong, but this sounds suspiciously like a child’s birthday party? I pointed this out to Bekah, but was ignored as usual, so I did what any self-respecting dad would do in that situation, I drove the kids to laser tag and systematically destroyed them all with the skills I developed playing Call of Duty on the Xbox. #winning

Last Christmas our youngest Florie was only nine months old and was quite ill over the festive period. In fact, we ended up in A and E with her, twice! This year not one of us fell to illness and we were able to enjoy the holidays with only the usual stressors: kids searching and finding Christmas presents, Florie deciding she does not require sleep to sustain her lifeforce, ya know, the usual… Bekah always goes above and beyond to make Christmas extra special. The thought she puts into every single detail is astonishing. From the decorations inside and outside the house, to the festive buffet that seems to last for a whole two weeks. Needless to say, I am festively plump (I was an adonis in November, shame). This year I asked family members who usually get me a gift to donate to Crisis instead. Crisis are a homeless charity and for £28 a homeless person can have a bed for the night and a Christmas dinner. I am happy to say that several people donated to Crisis on my behalf, meaning three people were able to eat Christmas dinner and stay warm for the day. Best present ever! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas. Peace, love and positivity, Simon

Garden Tips

Winter Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor, sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or windowsill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though - only plan for plants where there’s space. 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. 10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire into a container, and put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2020 Potato Day (January 25th). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late spring planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in).
