eat the Street is coming to Chesterfield soon! It's a community-wide game where players tap cards on sensors called Beat Boxes and earn points as they walk, scoot, cycle and run. The further you travel, the more points you earn. You can even win prizes! There will be over 100 boxes all over the borough, typically placed on lampposts, and all primary school children will be given a card to use for their school team. Parents can join in too and earn more points for schools. Anyone can take part by picking up a contactless card from one of the distribution points; Queens Park Sports Centre, Chesterfield Library, Town Hall and Chesterfiel Visitor Information Centre. The game encourages people of all ages to leave the car at home, groups can form their own teams and there are prizes for the winning teams who travel the furthest. When you get your card, you’ll also get a map of box locations. Find the ones on your walk or cycle to work or school. Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, said, “The feedback from players in other towns who have experienced Beat the Street is that people find it quite addictive, are doing great things for their health and also getting out as a family and finding new places close by".
Join the fun, free game and play with all the family
How far will you go? Pick up a Beat the Street card from your library, leisure centre or community centre. See app.beatthestreet.me/chesterfield for more information.

The game was devised by GP, Dr William Bird MBE, in 2010 to get communities active and to make physical activity accessible to everyone. So far, the game has been played all over the UK including East London, Leicester and Liverpool as well as Norway, New York and beyond. Beat the Street Chesterfield is funded as part of a £3.3 million National Lottery funding grant from Sport England; it is supported by Chesterfield Borough Council and delivered by Intelligent Health. The game starts on 26th February until 7th April. Each week has a different theme where certain boxes will have double points! Look out for Beat the Street events with extra points too. Chesterfield residents are also encouraged to enter workplaces, community groups and sports groups into the game. Page 4

efore Christmas, we asked readers to let us know which was their favourite piece of art from the fabulous S40 & S41 Local covers from the last year. We received a good number of entries by text, email and letter, and we're please to let you know that Dave Draws' work came out on top. We've included a copy of the original artwork from which the cover was taken and pass on our thanks to all those who took time to get in touch. This wasn't meant to be a critical review and assessment of each piece of art, it was simply an interest piece to see what people thought.
Page 12
We caught up with Dave to get a few words: "I am delighted to be the favourite cover artist of the year! I was really happy with how the article about my art turned out and I hope that people enjoyed seeing my Chesterfield map on the cover." In addition, Sue Booth from Newbold was chosen, from all those who entered, and will be receiving a copy of her favourite cover, the Christmas cover from edition 99, by Hannah Bluish Illustration. dave_draws Dave draws

Craig Longmuir A-Head in Art Words: Simon Paterson Images: Craig Longmuir
C
raig Longmuir is the Head of Art at St Mary’s Catholic High School and has a first-class degree in Fine Art and Print Making. Craig has always been enchanted by the Peak District and is captivated by Curbar and Stanage Edge.
I was in an exhibition in the Botanical Gardens (Sheffield), Tim Rose (Artist PDA) asked me to apply to join. I was then invited to a panel interview with a selection of my work and was accepted into the fold.
Craig’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed and he is thrilled to have one of his black ink drawings selected for exhibition in the Mall Galleries 303rd RBA Annual Exhibition (London), he hopes you can pop in to see the art during February this year.
You teach Art at St Mary’s School in Chesterfield. If you were 15 again, at school, what advice would you give your younger self before embarking on your teaching career?
We wanted to know more about the local Teacher with an international talent and managed to interrupt his busy schedule to meet the man behind the paintings… What was the first piece of art you can remember doing as a child? It was a painting of a galleon ship on an ocean with loads of waves crashing around it with rigging. I enjoyed making it come to life from a picture I found in a book. I guess I was about 6 or 7 years old. So, that gave you the ‘painting bug?’ Definitely. I remember creating a painting and hanging it up overnight. In the morning I was excited to see how it had changed as the paint dried. You generally paint with oils then? I do, it enables me to blend and make textures, whereas other paint dries too quickly to manipulate it. Oil paint has a lovely greasy texture to it that you don’t get with others. The paintings in this article are of the Peaks, what inspires you to paint Chesterfield’s beautiful back garden? It is a magnificent landscape and I enjoy trying to capture the splendour of it. I like the gritstone and contrast between the up close, panorama in Stanage and Curbar. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
Well, if I was 15 now, I wouldn’t go into teaching because of the university fees. I would advise myself to do an apprenticeship in London. I’d love the buzz of the city and would volunteer in a theatre. I did paint at the crucible as a teenager which was a fantastic experience, one I will always hold dear… If you were trapped in an elevator with three Artists past or present, who would you choose and why? Leonardo Davinci, because he led a fantastic life coming up with new techniques to paint murals. I’d love to know what made him tick. He analysed every detail of his subject before putting brush to paper. David Bomberg, because he wasn’t in fashion in the 1920’s, so he struggled with his career against all the odds despite being hugely talented. I’d love to know how he faced that adversity. Artemisia Gentileschi, she was abused early on in life which inspired her art. Therefore, her art is macabre and turned the tables on her abusers through her art, painting strong women defeating men. I’d love to know more about her mindset and what made her keep pushing to succeed where most people would have crumbled. Craig’s art will be on display: Royal Society of British Artists 303rd Annual Exhibition 2020 London 20th to 29th February 2020

Local Hero
Not all heroes wear capes ... Some drive a lorry! Words: Simon Paterson
W
hen larger-than-life truck driver, John Rastrick, left for work on the morning of the 17th January 2019, he had no idea he would return home a national hero! Loundsley Green resident John Rastrick was driving along the M1 last year when he witnessed a vehicle smash into a small car at speed, which left Pari Mistry's hatchback in flames, and her trapped inside the wreckage! With little to no regard for his own safety, John pulled over the lorry and leapt from his cab to begin his rescue of the 27-year-old from Leicester. Approaching the car, John was met with a thick cloud of smoke and flames rapidly engulfing the car. Pari was in complete shock, curled up in a ball with her knees to her chest. John said, “I saw her car spin two or three times when another car collided with her and her vehicle immediately set on fire. “I just knew at that moment that there was no one else around to help and I had to do what was right. “I hoped to God that whoever was in the car had got out, but when I saw Pari in there, I put all my fears aside and tried to pull her out.”
Page 22
With just twenty-nine seconds to spare John, 65, pulled Pari to safety before her car exploded. John goes on to say: “The real hero here is Pari. She spent four days in a critical care unit with a fractured skull, underwent an eight-hour operation and then had to learn to walk and talk again. That’s real determination and courage right there, she’s a very special lady.” Thanks to John, Pari is on the road to recovery and enjoying life with her husband and family. John and Pari have built a friendship and remain close to this day. Pari will always be grateful to the man who saved her life. We are not the only people who have recognised John’s heroism. The Emergency Services crew who attend the incident have presented John with the East Midlands Ambulance Service Bravery Award for his selfless actions. John has appeared on both BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain, gracing the sofas with his presence. He is very happy to have met Naga Munchetty and had quite the grin on his face talking about Kate Garraway! So, the next time you see John Rastrick in one of our local pubs, buy him a pint will ya, he deserves it!

Garden Tips
March Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
M
id-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes; assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which could affect the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn’t directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year. Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed. Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint, too. It is the time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary too. If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there’s a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long. Seeds to sow indoors in March include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules. Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have. Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year - tying it up prevents this happening efficiently and doesn’t look nice. There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again. The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them – there are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you’ll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas. Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem un-necessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right sort makes a big difference. We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like this say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two.
