Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Apologies for the early Christmas wishes, I don't really have much choice based on my delivery dates! I think this edition's cover is fantastic, by local creative, Josh Bramley, I know it's not all that Christmassy but I love the sense of community it portrays. As always we'll be closing the doors at the studio of S40 Local, S41 Local and Unhampered, whilst we enjoy a bit of an extended holiday over Christmas and New Year. Our next edition will drop week commencing 15 Jan 2024 and will be all delivered by Sunday 21 January 2024... I wonder if we'll have had any snow by then? Part 2 of our Gift Guide is full of ideas for gifts, and where possible, please support our independent businesses. We've a few entries in the guide from businesses along Chatsworth Road that suffered in the recent floods, these guys really need our help... I'll leave that with you.

Community

Lifehouse Church

Have faith, help is on the way Words: Simon Paterson Images: Lifehouse Church

People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care!” These are the words that will resonate with me for a lifetime, spoken by Pastor Paul Hollingworth during our chat at Lifehouse Church. When the River Rother overflowed its banks in Chesterfield, it was Lifehouse Church, or more specifically, the dedicated individuals who work and volunteer there, who stepped up and took the lead during the most significant crisis Chesterfield has faced in many years. I caught up with Pastor Paul over a coffee to hear about the pivotal role played in supporting the communities affected by the floods. “My son sent me a picture of the river down by the Junction Bar, and I thought wow, that is high. So, I went down to the bottom of Alma Street, spoke to a couple of concerned residents and less than one hour later it had breached the flood defences and started coming up the street,” says Paul. "The water rapidly started infiltrating the church's cellar, leaving us helpless in that regard. Our focus shifted to the main hall and auditorium. We swiftly arranged tables and chairs, assigned someone to the café area, and decided that anyone seeking refuge should be welcomed with a warm drink and a safe haven,” affirms Paul. It wasn’t long before the residents of Brampton began to seek shelter at the church. “Over the next eight hours, up until about 9pm that night, people just kept walking in. Some of them would be clutching pets, bin liners full of valuables, all of them cold, wet, and seeking help. Page 6

We tried our best to make people feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for,” says Paul. The church also provided a base for the emergency services to work from. "The fire brigade established their operations at the church, and we did everything in our power to provide support, sustenance, and refreshments for them. Our church was right at the heart of the crisis, allowing us to fulfil the core mission of any church, which is to care for and serve its community. By the day's end, the emergency services, as well as all of us, were physically and emotionally drained,” Paul shared. Just after 9pm Queens Park Sports Centre was declared a base for anybody affected by the floods. This gave Paul and his team of selfless volunteers time to breathe and plan for the next stage of the operation. "The following morning, I woke up early with a deep sense of responsibility to return to Chatsworth Road and evaluate the extent of the damage. The scene was chaotic, with cars scattered haphazardly, and the area was covered in sludge and debris. We observed residents who seemed disoriented, reluctantly discarding their belongings on their doorsteps. It was truly heartwrenching to witness treasured photo albums and family heirlooms amidst the discarded items. We couldn't stand by, so we decided to act.

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

"We headed to Greggs, bought a generous supply of sandwiches, and distributed them to those affected. We then hired some skips and located them in the church car park and a couple of spaces on streets where parking was available. Our team of volunteers assisted the residents with the clean-up and whatever they required,” says Paul. "Later that evening, we collaborated with local businesses, including Pizza Pi Mobile Catering, to provide food and drinks. Our primary goal was to convey our genuine care for the community. One of my guiding principles is that 'people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.' It was on that Saturday that people truly realised the depth of our concern and compassion for them." But Paul and the team didn't stop at providing immediate relief. Recognising that many of the flood victims would need financial support to replace lost possessions and repair their homes, they took further action. They initiated, with other community leaders, the Flood Victims Appeal, aiming to offer a modest contribution to each of the 700 homes in need. (See QR code to donate). “Thanks to the generosity of the people of Chesterfield our initial target was achieved very quickly. We are currently sat around £85,000 and we hope to hit £100,000. It would be wonderful to give every home something. If it’s not a massive amount, hopefully it will make a difference,” smiles Paul. In the coming days, weeks and months, the church is actively seeking volunteers to contribute to the renovation of homes. They are especially interested in hearing from tradespeople who could spare a day to plaster a room, lay a floor, or fit a kitchen cupboard, among other skills. If you're willing to lend a hand in any capacity, please reach out to the team on 07711 260992. S40 and S41 Local Magazines extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who offered support to the victims of the floods. Your exceptional kindness makes us proud to be part of the Chesterfield community.

Drink Local! Over the past couple of years our local pubs, restaurants and cafes have had a bit of a hard time. Adjusting to COVID, shutting for months or adapting to home delivery, then rising costs results in less spare cash in people's pockets and then mother nature rolled in Storm Babet bringing chaos and destruction.

pubs and eateries along Chatsworth Road give us all. Right now these businesses, just like the retailers, need your support, a pint or G&T in one of these will go along way to helping the recovery. Cover Artist

Chesterfield

From the Workman's Hands Words: Paul Chapman Images: Josh Bramley

J

osh Bramley is the creative talent responsible for the 2023 Christmas cover. Josh’s work is outstanding, working mainly with pencil sketches, he splits his time with his art and teaching Royal Naval trainees how to operate on helicopters. Josh was born in Brockwell and spent all his youth in Chesterfield, he wasn’t interested in college or heading off to university, he’d always wanted to be a pilot in the forces. Unfortunately, Josh suffered from a migraine at a young age which basically cut short his military plans. He worked at Tesco for a few years, but his heart wasn’t in it. “I went to see my military careers advisor again and we found a way for me to fly in the services,” says Josh. “I started as an Aircrewman splitting my time hunting for submarines and search and rescue, all on helicopters.” “I spent ten years working across the world. A typical day, whilst on deployment, would be six hours airborne at a time, in a very high-pressure environment. I was also based in Cornwall, a long way from home, especially after meeting my girlfriend, Lucy from Chesterfield.” Josh moved to the Defence Flying Training School which he admits is a much more relaxed environment in which to work. “I’m now based in Shrewsbury during the week, I commute home at the weekends but the time on site is five days 100% in the naval frame of mind,” Josh explained how the Navy have their own lingo, everyday sayings coming from a naval background. ‘Three square meals a day’ as an example, square meals, served on square plates, easier to use and store on a constantly moving ship. Ten years on and Josh is now married, has set up home in Hasland and their first child is on the way, due in March. In 2017 he started drawing again to switch off after a day’s teaching, it wasn’t until settling in Hasland though that he started to take his art a little more seriously. “I put my first drawings on social media and response was really positive,” says Josh. “The first was a drawing of my wife Lucy, I posted this on Facebook and people loved it.”

Page 22

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

Cover Artist “This gave me the confidence to put a post on Facebook Marketplace to see if anyone would like me to do a commission, these were priced at just £30 for an A4 drawing and I started filling my evenings in Shrewsbury drawing and sketching for people.” Josh’s work is drawn working from photos and usually includes people or animals, he’s even created pieces that merge lost loved ones together with their family to produce images that never existed. He admits that people’s response to the finished pieces are often very emotional. “I enjoy drawing, it turns out I’m quite good at it and I love the feedback I get,” says Josh. “It’s a great way to pass the evenings whilst away at Shrewsbury. “I’m starting to build a social media presence, I’m not the world’s biggest fan but it’s essential to grow the business. “It’s going to take a little more time to balance work and life when I become a dad but I’m looking forward to it, both being a family and enjoying my art, long term it would be great to make art a full time living, we’ll have to see how it develops,” Josh laughs. Take a look at Josh’s social media feeds, below, be sure to check out his murals that he’s done at his training grounds (shown below) and locally at Ashgate Croft, where he volunteered his time to do a woodland themed commission for a student quiet room. He’s always happy to discuss these larger commissions but you’ll have to work with him as they can be time consuming, so he’d need to fit them around his time at the weekends.

Page 24

I’d like to thank Josh for his cover art. I love the way he’s bought together many of the sites and artwork we pass daily, 'Chesterfield from the workman’s hands'. Happy Christmas!

ollowing the success of last year’s Be a Star campaign, independent businesses of Chesterfield have come together once again to raise awareness of the fantastic range of businesses across the town, and the importance of supporting their local area with their Christmas Music Trail. This year, independent businesses across Chesterfield are displaying musical inspired scenes to bring the festive spirit to the town centre. Business Update

New Be'GIN'nings A fabulous established business with a new home and a new name, Street Spirit. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Street Spirit

"We are very excited to be relocating, to Vicar Lane at 10 Steeplegate, Vicar Lane," says Matt Darken, owner of Ginspired, now Street Spirit. "We will continue to bring you the best quality and range of bottled alcohol we can source, in a lovely new space on the high street!" If you like a gin with a difference you’d better call in to Street Spirit! They will definitely have something to wet your whistle… and it’s not only gins, they have a fantastic selection of fine Irish and Scottish whiskies, Caribbean rums, bourbons, craft beer and real ales. Matt has spent four wonderful years in Chesterfield Market Hall but the time is right to move on. Originally he set up with his business partner in Dronfield, then Buxton before settling in the Market Hall, today Street Spirit is Matt's business alone and he can't wait to see customers old and new in his much larger new premises. "The majority of our gins and beers are all sourced locally, the whiskies and bourbons come from further afield - whiskies from Scotland, bourbons from around the States.

"Our ales are all of great quality, bottle conditioned to ensure they are perfect when poured and from an ever-expanding range of small independents." "We get customers saying, ‘I’ve never heard of any of these’, and that’s exactly what we want to hear," says Matt. That kind of sums up what inspires Street Spirit, as I see it. A range that’s not the norm, is unique, expertly sourced and of the highest quality and Matt will cater for all who call in to see him.

"We have a great range, but if there is something particular you’d like, we’ll do our very best to source it. If you like a particular flavour or taste, again, let us know and we’ll serve up a few options for you that you may not have tried.

Street Spirit stocks a unique range of Christmas gifts, vouchers and will have advent calendars and crackers, plus much more.

"With Christmas approaching our rums are popular, they outsold whiskey last Christmas, which was a surprise but something that has led us to respond and seek out some great products to support this local demand.

Streetspiritdrinks Open: Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm.

Gallery Beauty Room A quick intro to Caroline and her new Holymoorside based business. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Caroline Nugent

C

aroline Nugent is the proud owner of the Gallery Beauty Room, her business offering beauty, electrolysis and holistic therapy treatments from her home studio on Gallery Lane, Holymoorside. Caroline was previously at 521 Chatsworth Road at Chatsworth Beauty Therapies, the old Post Office on the corner of Vincent Crescent. This was home for 22 years but recently the business closed as others stepped down to retire, so Caroline needed a new place. “I offer a full range of beauty treatments including holistic and electrolysis,” says Caroline. “I’m one of the few in the area that can offer electrolysis and many of my clients come to me specifically for this service.” “Some of my advanced cosmetic procedures were previously something that you would have to get from a GP. Today, with the correct training and qualifications, we are able to offer them without the need to see a doctor and from the comfort of the studio.” The list of services at the Gallery Beauty Room includes many advanced skin based cosmetic procedures such as, thread vein removal, broken capillaries, skin tags, blood spots, warts, brown spots, milia, moles, spider naevus and syringoma. Caroline also offers; hand and feet care, depilatory waxing, electrolysis, eye treatments, ear piercing and gents waxing and grooming. The list of services doesn’t stop here; pamper and holiday packages, body treatments and a list of holistic and relaxation services including, reflexology, Indian head massage, hopi ear candle and hot stone massage.

Page 36

“My beauty room on Gallery Lane in Holymoorside is easy to access with parking right outside,” says Caroline. “It’s so lovely to be able to continue offering my services to clients both old and new from the convenience of my home.” Caroline is a born and bred ‘Cestrefeldian’, she moved away to Oxford for five years but soon returned when the option presented itself. She has been friends with Marie from Chatsworth Hair & Beauty for many years, and it was following a conversation with Marie that she decided to attend college studying Beauty. Caroline became one of the team at 521 Chatsworth Road until the business closed. Alongside the treatments Caroline has a fabulous range of beauty products from Nimue skin technology, “products that sell themselves,” she adds. “Once people have experienced the Nimue products as part of a treatment they typically end up buying the products which are very select and only used by a small number of salons, they are not available over the counter from major retailers.” With Christmas approaching Caroline can provide vouchers which can be redeemed against any of her services, so please give her a call to pick up your gifts. Caroline is clearly excited about the move, and is looking forward to seeing some friendly faces at the Gallery Beauty Room.

Words: Paul Chapman Images: KORE Academy Meet Michelle Carlisle. Michelle offers KORE and holistic therapies to help increase your healthspan through complementary medicines. Michelle has recently moved to a new comfortable and private treatment room at 622 Chatsworth Road behind Londis.

KORE Therapy differs from many others, instead of looking at 'what' the problem is, it focuses on 'why' the problem is there and where it's coming from. KORE Therapy uses unique muscle testing to pin point the root cause of the problem and then treatment techniques such as Spinal Release, Pelvic and Cranial Balancing, Qi Gong, Acupuncture, Tuina, Anmo Fu, and much more can be applied. The most common symptoms people experience that use KORE treatments are back and neck pain, hip pain and headaches. For instance, how many of us spend too much time sat at the desk working on screens and experience discomfort? "Treatment is fully clothed and techniques are gentle so as not to cause pain. It's all about evaluating what your body is doing and working from here," Michelle adds.

With over 20 years experience with holistic therapies Michelle is a qualified sports massage therapist and alongside this and the KORE Therapy she offers Swedish Massage, and Reiki Healing where she is qualified to master level. Facial Gua Sha, Jade Roller and Dry Cupping are tools that allow for a very gentle relaxing treatment. This includes facial cups that are smaller and softer and don’t leave marks on the skin. Facial cupping benefits by promoting cell repair, decreases puffiness and minimizes fine lines, plus it rejuvenates the skin. Cupping and Gua Sha can also help reduce muscle tension in the face, eg: for people experiencing jaw pain from teeth grinding. Michelle can also offer Fire Cupping where fire is used to create vacuum in the glass cups and Dry Cupping which involves plastic cups that are applied with a pump. You can choose which treatment you are more comfortable with. Give Michelle a call on 07467 700319 and arrange to pop down for your treatment.

"Anyone can benefit from a KORE assessment, it can help athletes achieve better results or simply enable you to go about your daily life with a little lest fatigue." Providing Professional Complimentary Healthcare KORE Therapy truly investigates the causes of illness and provides a rapid return to health and optimum performance. Typical conditions we treat in our clinics include • Back Pain • headaches • Joint Pain • Migraine • • Insomnia • Arthritis • Menstrual Difficulties • • Fatigue • Stress • IBS / Crohn’s Disease • • Constipation • Diarrhoea • Frozen Shoulder • • Neck Issues • Skin Complaints • Infertility • • Sports Injuries and more...

Charity

What Would You Do? I chat with the team at Pathways about the fabulous work they do for the homeless in our community. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Pathways

P

thways is a Chesterfield based charity, a with offices and a separate drop-in centre on Saltergate. They offer services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, and Bolsover. I met up with Claire Douglass who is the Volunteer and Activity Coordinator at Pathways. "We help people in our community, if people get support early enough, evictions can sometimes be prevented, or new housing options can be found" explains Claire. "We operate from the generosity of public together with funding from the councils and other grant providers who are listed on our website. We are always looking for additional funding though! We are a small team, just 10 staff, 2 mental health nurses and a team of volunteers, this allows us to run a very lean operation ensuring most funds go to those needing help." Claire explained that there are lots of vulnerable people out there, pressure pots at home, relationships breaking down and the increasing costs of living, all factors that may push someone from home to becoming homeless. "It is important that people contact us as soon as they can see difficulties approaching, we can assist in so many ways, tenancy problems might be something we can help with, but we need to get involved early," says Claire. Pathways adopt a holistic approach to each case; it is not always as simple as rehousing someone who is homeless. Without the correct 360 degree support they are often likely to just bounce out again. "We have to look at why someone became homeless, what else do they need support with to enable them to move forward," says Claire. "The holistic approach includes referring clients to other support agencies to ensure their needs are met. This could be mental health support, welfare advice, substance dependency support and accessing healthcare services." "I'm an activity group coordinator, running sessions for people to drop into for company and encouragement, to do something creative, producing a product they can be proud of."

Page 42

"We run a furniture restoration group, where we provide lunch and drinks and the opportunity to talk whilst creating something unique. These pieces of furniture are given to people moving into new properties." "We have all sorts of parallel services from which people can benefit. A Derbyshire community dentist team run a drop-in service offering free dental care to those accessing Pathways. A good set of teeth, something most of us take for granted, could be life changing for our service users," Claire explains. Pathways is about to launch a Peer Mentoring programme for people who have lived experience of homelessness and who are wanting to help others within the service. These individuals will undertake a training course and gain qualifications and are eager to give back. "We are so proud to launch this project we want them to feel empowered and use their experiences to help others as volunteers."

'£5 a month or £1 a week donated to Pathways goes such a long way to helping someone in our community' "Everyone who is rough sleeping has their own story as to what led them to become homeless, and it is essential we work with the person to get an understanding of what support they need. Recent research has shown that over 90% of people who become homeless have suffered childhood trauma which continues to impact on their lives. Coupled with the trauma that homelessness itself brings with it, can make moving forward feel extremely difficult for people. Trying to cope with this level of trauma can have a detrimental effect on people lives particularly impacting mental health. "We run a women’s group and women’s drop-in service, with referrals coming from organisations such as the Elm Foundation, a charity for people fleeing domestic abuse. The group helps women take their minds off their traumas, laughing and crying at the same time, they bake, enjoy sound baths, do yoga, painting and make jewellery, for example. We have some really powerful conversations as a result of these sessions," explains Claire. "People ease up and start to talk openly when you occupy them with an activity that allows escape."

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

"Homelessness can happen to people so easily,"explains Claire "It might start with the loss of a loved one, then your mental health is impacted, the simplest things get forgotten, bills go unpaid and before you realise what’s happening, you’re homeless". Right now, Pathways could use some sleeping bags, it’s the first defence against the cold for many people. When funding is available, they provide basic kitchen items and bedding to get people started. They can be assembled for as little as £150 and go such a long way to helping. If you would like to offer any items to Pathways, they’re always looking for sleeping bags, rucksacks, warm, practical clothing, and food which doesn’t need to be cooked such as pot noodle, crisps, cereal bars, biscuits etc. You can contact Pathways on the numbers below to donate any items you have. Christmas will be here shortly, this can be a really difficult time for people experiencing homelessness, with the focus being on spending time with family and loved ones and many not having these support networks. Alongside this, contending with the winter weather conditions can make things feel extremely hard. Many of the people they support struggle more with mental health at this time of year than any other. Pathways try to offer additional emotional support and are pleased to have a nursing team to help them do this. On the 20 December Pathways are holding a Christmas party. This is always a nice event with a lovely lunch, games, and giggles to try and keep peoples spirits up. There is a Christmas lunch run by the churches on Christmas day. I felt moved after my visit to Pathways, it’s eye opening to see how easily things can turn, I think many of us struggle with the continual rises in the cost of living, moaning about heating etc but always doing what we can to put food on the table and keep our houses warm, the things we take for granted. As little as £5 a month or £1 a week donated to Pathways goes such a long way to helping someone in our community, to feed them and provide shelter, and there are details of how you go about this below. If you can’t help with a monetary donation but feel that you can help volunteer your time, the team at Pathways would love to hear from you, again the contact numbers on the right.

Charity

Let's B:Friends Words: Sara (B:Friends)

O

ver nine million people in the UK say they are often or always lonely, a frightening statistic! b:Friend is a national charity working on a local level to end loneliness. b:Friend started five years ago in the garage of Mike Niles. Having been a befriender in London he moved back to Doncaster and realised that it wasn’t just London that was lonely. The charity snowballed and in 2018 b:Friend received National Lottery funding to roll out across South Yorkshire. In December 2021 it expanded to Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. In August 2022, the new CEO, Colette Bunker, took over from Mike Niles, and thanks to recent funding from corporate supporters, Strata, b:friend is looking to expand to new areas in Nottinghamshire I caught up with Rayella Broomhead from the charity to find out more. "We work to reduce social isolation in people aged 65 and over by pairing them with a volunteer befriender who pledges to visit once a week to provide company. We don’t ask our volunteers to do anything other than provide company - no jobs around the home, no shopping etc... just a cuppa and a chat for an hour a week in the person's home. "There is no cost to the older person and it is an open-ended thing with the hope that an organic friendship develops. We often find many pairings have gone on for years. "The volunteer has the support of a volunteer coordinator who they can contact at any time with any worries or concerns they may have, or to tell us they are enjoying it! We ask that the first few visits are made in the person's home but after a while if the pairing wish to go out for a coffee or a bite to eat there is no reason they can't do this. "The impact our volunteers have is huge. I don’t think they always realise just how big that impact is. Many of our older people may have lost their spouse, may have restricted mobility so can’t get out, or have lost their confidence to go out after being in for so long. "Having a befriender visit every week has been life changing for some of the people we work with. It is someone they know they will see every week, giving them something to look forward to. Page 44

"Some of the people we work with don’t see or hear from people for days at a time and often when they do it may be a person in passing. "Our volunteers are amazing - they are friendly, warm and giving. It is hugely impactful on the volunteer. Many report learning a lot from the older neighbour they are paired with and hearing fantastic tales about their life. A lovely thing about befriending is that it is just the older neighbour and the volunteer, neither know anyone from one another's life so it is quite a special relationship. The conversation is often rich, not just questions about one another's welfare or whether tablets have been taken. I befriended a gentleman who would tell me about the time he was 10 feet away from a tiger in the Malayan jungle when he was in the army or the time, he was a little boy and living on a farm. He saw a duck hatch and he was the first person it saw so it followed him around like he was its Mum. The stories we have the honour of hearing are so varied, all of our older neighbours have led such different lives." "We currently have hundreds of pairings across South Yorkshire, and thanks to fantastic community support, we have made several pairings since we started working in Chesterfield, NE Derbyshire and Bolsover. However, we have many more referrals to pair up so we are always looking for more volunteers." Danielle is one of the volunteers and had this to say: "I don't have any grandparents. it’s just me, my husband and the kids. I have been looking forward to this for a week." Older neighbour Janet says her befriender made a real difference: “I can go two or three days without talking to anybody. There are days when I haven’t heard my own voice. But now, it’s lovely to know that somebody is coming.” To find out more about volunteering or using the b:friend service please contact them using the details below. Opinion

2023 What a load of rubbish! Words: Lynda Volli Images: CBC

M

y goodness what a year it's been. Half the world on fire, at war or washed away in floods, cost of living crisis with mortgages, rent, and food prices rocketing, and strikes, strikes and more strikes. Then to cap it all storm Babet flooded away so many homes and shops, my end of town was left with drives, gardens, and skips full of ruined furniture and a muck. The effects on those involved ranged from inconvenient to tragic. Our hearts, and in many cases, our hospitality and kindness went out to them as it always does. But back to the strikes: Anyone old enough to remember the 1970s will recall inflation at 30% and what seemed like almost everyone on strike. Coal miners on strike meant homes and businesses had electricity restricted to specific times. I lived in Gleadless then, and the Sheffield Star printed the outages for each area. The equivalent today might be Walton electricity off 6 to 10am then 4 to 9pm, whereas Newbold would be off 9am to 1pm and then 5 to 10pm, so best make a note and don't get mixed up. I remember a neighbour giving my mum 50p to put her pie in our gas oven because their oven was electric. Vacuum flasks full of tea and hot water came in handy. You probably didn't have to watch all this reported on the news because the television was off too, which left a grumpy game of cards round a lantern or a very early night. Some shops stayed open, but you needed a candle or torch to find whatever you came in for. Your five-day working week was cut, often along with your pay, to three days, always assuming you could actually get there, as buses and trains were on minimal service, and you'd face a long queue for any petrol that was to be had. You could, of course use those dark evenings to write all those long-promised letters but the postmen were on strike and your bins hadn't been emptied for at least six weeks. Foxes and strays ripped bin bags open, and it's had a fieldday. So, although its meagre comfort to the sad souls in dire need of an operation, I assure you it could be worse. For one thing we've been spared the loss of one important and unappreciated service - that of our refuse collections. Heaven forbid! Our hard-working bin men get a decent wage, though it’s nothing to write home about, but bear in mind they start at 6:30am, often in weather you wouldn't leave your house for unless it was on fire, trotting along for about five miles and risking injury, infection, and even abuse at every turn. Some days will be fine and dry, many will be roasting hot, pouring rain, heavy snow or blowing a gale with half the bins blown over - so please have a care. If you know a storm is coming make sure the bin is stable enough to resist the wind - better to leave it ‘til next time than have your rubbish strewn all down the road. If it's hot, keep it in the shade if you can. If not, you can buy disinfectant or toilet cleaner very cheaply. Sprinkling some on top should help. After collection get the bin off the payment as soon as possible or ask a neighbour to. It's awkward to juggle a pushchair or mobility scooter around bins and if it's icy underfoot it's downright dangerous.

Page 46

When I divorced some years ago my ex managed to evade making any payments towards me or our daughter, so money was very tight indeed. A takeaway fish and chips or chinese meal to share was a big treat, holidays out of the question. My mother was a bit ‘you made your own bed’, but my dad used to sneak me a large loaf and maybe a chicken on Saturdays, so that was a week's worth of food sorted for me, my daughter, and the dogs. Careful budgeting, planning cooking and freezing meant we ate healthy home-cooked meals and most importantly we were happy. Birthday and Christmas presents may have been small or even a voucher for a ‘Pamper Morning or ‘Spring Clean Your Kitchen’ voucher (I'd like that now - wouldn't you?) but it mattered to me that I always found a spare £1 to tip the bin men because I never forgot how important they are. That was then, this is now, and I'm not skint anymore, though I'm still careful with my pennies, so I'll give them all £10 around Christmas to say, ‘thank you.’ It's about 19p per week. No doubt some of you can't spare £10 a pop with so many other expenses but I hope some of you will remember our bin men worked right through COVID to keep us safe, and maybe spare £1. If you're never in when they call find someone you trust who is. Even if you can't spare any money at all a friendly wave and a ‘Thank you - Happy Christmas!’ will brighten their day. And yours.

Sparkles & Spangles at the Brookfield Tower Ballroom In late November – the week Strictly fans like to call “Making it to Blackpool” - Brookfield holds its biannual charity dance show - entirely choreographed and planned by Y13 students Chloe Johnson, Scarlett Dunwell, Freya Cooper and Issy Meades. Themed ‘A Night at the Movies’, the evening showcases the talent and dedication of all those involved, especially the Y13s working towards their A levels whilst simultaneously organising the entire night. The show involves students from every year, ranging from courageous new Y7s to skilled experienced Y13s – meaning the audience is spoiled for choices of dance style as performances included jazz, ballet, lyrical, musical theatre and more. In addition, it isn’t just performers involved as the school has a talented technical crew responsible for controlling the lighting, sound and making sure backstage runs smoothly. This further portrays the talent and community at Brookfield. As well as highlighting the incredible ability of Brookfield students, the show always goes to a heartening cause, this year raising important funds for the charity ‘Mind’ which aids those with mental health problems to speak out and get the support they need. The sum raised is not only through tickets but from a raffle and cake sale helped by the BPFA*. This additionally demonstrates the sense of community, as it involves not only staff and students but wouldn’t be possible without the support from parents and carers. Head of Dance Mrs Carter said: ‘I am exceptionally proud of all those involved, and the incredible amount we raise each year for charity.’ Exciting, entertaining, enjoyable: it really is like a night at the movies. If you missed this evening but have been inspired to come to another event, there Page 48

are plenty of choices throughout the school year including – next up a Christmas showcase (Tin to a Tenner on December 21st), another dance show, a summer showcase and a whole school musical production. In February, students from every year group will participate in a production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ which they are already working hard at. Don’t forget to get tickets: details will appear on the school website. Katrina Prior *BPFA - Brookfield Parent and Friends Association. Please contact school for details.

Secondary to Sixth Form Are you wondering what it’s like to make the transition from secondary school to sixth form? Are you scared or nervous? Or are you excited? In this article, we’ll be exploring all aspects of this change. On the first couple of days, it’s intimidating, we can absolutely agree. You’re in a new school - or maybe you’ve been there all along. Perhaps you don’t know anyone; or - possibly - you have loads of friends already. Whatever your case, it’s a scary experience; but especially for those like us, who come from different schools, with few friends maybe only the three or four they know. Lucky for us, we came to a great school, with supportive staff and welcoming students. On day one, we didn’t know what to do on our free (although Mr Daveys told us to call them “study” periods). We didn’t know where to go, or who to talk to. Fortunately, everyone was really friendly, and asked us to join them in some of our Sixth Form common areas: the Senior Library, the Hive (Quiet Study), Haven (Silent Study) or Hub (Common Room/café). We easily soon found that we carved out our own little areas where we could go, study or talk... more talking than studying to start!

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

It was a bit scary trying to navigate the school on the first few days, as it was much bigger than either of our old schools and is structured differently. We found that we were late to some of our first lessons, but teachers seemed to understand this and just offered to help us out with finding our rooms and getting to where we needed to be. Entering into new subjects we’d never done before, like Psychology, Politics, and Criminology, was daunting. It was a sudden jump from subjects we’d always done, like English and Maths, to these subjects that might as well have been a foreign language to us! But our teachers really helped to make this transition much easier, explaining things well and going at whatever pace we needed to understand the content we were covering. There is a wide range of clubs, under the branch of ‘Stellar’, a programme which encourages extracurricular involvement. We found that there was something for everyone in this programme, and it really helps to include anyone and everyone, with clubs like the LGBT club open to anyone who wants to join, or the ability to offer help to students who are learning English as their second language.

Brookfield Community School www.brookfieldcs.org.uk

There’s also plenty of fun clubs, such as drama club, or Journalism! This made us feel like the school was a welcoming place catering for everyone, not just one specific sub-group of students. While at first the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), like Mr Hirst and Mr Robinson, might seem unapproachable, they are actually really nice and speak to you like human beings. They’re there to help and understand what a weird change this is for you. While one of us had this experience at their previous school, the other didn’t, where the SLT tended to keep to themselves and not really talk to the students. Life at sixth form is very different, but not in a bad way. Everyone is welcoming, and teachers are understanding. It quickly becomes like your new home. If you’re making this transition soon, don’t be worried: it’ll all work out well! Gemma Hutchinson and Charlize Candlin. Edited by the new S40 team, including Daiz Grove, Caitlin Pook, Grace Croley and Megan Gavan.

'Ey Up Duck' Sol and James Cowie (of Positive Electrics!) recently completed the mighty 'Saint Tropez or Bust' Banger Rally Challenge across Europe to raise money for b:friend, a befriending charity supporting lonely and socially isolated older neighbours in South Yorkshire and parts of Derbyshire. The couple set off from Cornwall on 23 September on their seven-day journey to the South of France, driving a 17-year-old blue convertible Astra, ‘Ducky’, which they decorated with duck stickers.

part in 55 bangers, all dressed in their own fancy dress, raising money for their chosen charities. “It was exciting, it was long, it was tiring, it was thrilling, it was everything, just every emotion you can imagine, it was amazing, ” says Sol. “It was quite a moment when James and I eventually arrived at the Citadelle in Saint Tropez. As we were driving into Saint Tropez, it was one of our challenges to sing the French National Anthem. We did get some funny looks then! But when we got there, it was amazing.” Sol and James have so far raised over £1,100 to support the charity’s befriending projects. Sol said: “We are so grateful to everyone who donated. We will leave our JustGiving page open longer and hope people will still donate a few pounds if they can.” Sara Kopecsni, b:friend’s Communications Officer, said: “Sol and James are absolute superstars. We couldn’t be more grateful to them for taking on this huge challenge to support our older neighbours. Their fundraising efforts have been outstanding, and we all loved the Ducky car!” Supporters can donate to Sol and James' fundraiser by visiting justgiving.com and search ducky-bfriend or scan the QR code below.

“We chose b:friend, because we love the idea of the charity, and we have a connection with it due to a family member who works there,” Sol said. “We like the idea of it being about friends, that’s why we picked ‘Ey Up Duck’ as our theme because it is something friendly people say to each other, especially in the North.”

As part of their epic adventure, the Cowies slept in an inflatable tent and had to complete various fun challenges throughout their journey. From Karaoke (Banger in Banger), selfies at various picturesque locations, quizzes and scavenger hunting that took them off the beaten track, they got to see amazing sights like Kandersteg in Switzerland, the Simplon Mountain pass, Casino square in Monaco, two laps around the F1 track in Spa and many more amazing sights. They travelled over 3000 miles through seven countries, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Italy and Monaco. There were 130 other enthusiastic participants who took Page 50

Wanted: Not Pavarotti! Not many people locally are aware that Chesterfield is the home of a highly regarded Male Voice Choir. Formed in 1922 in the aftermath of the Great War, and the Influenza pandemic that followed it, by men of the local industries, Coal Miners, Railway Workers, ex-servicemen, and many other residents of the town. And sang on through the 1929-39 Great Depression playing until today. "Our membership covers all aspects of society and nationality," says Walter Beaney from the choir. "Based at the Whittington Moor Methodist Church, we aren't a religious choir and sing everything from traditional Male Voice music to modern and popular music, including excellent good medleys from Les Miserables and other shows. "We are a charitable organisation and have donated many thousands of pounds to local and national charities, next year's spring concert will be in aid of the Marie Curie Hospices, a wonderful charity that helped my late wife to leave us peacefully at home. Last Christmas we helped raise £4,000 for relief for Ukraine, people who are suffering terribly." Recent performances have included The Royal Albert Hall, Derby Cathedral, Nottingham Cathedral, Chatsworth, Baltic Cruise Liners, and Latvia, The Spirites football stadium, BBC Songs of Praise, their 100th Anniversary concert in the Winding Wheel, local care homes and venues, and of course our own Crooked Spire Church. "We need new members," says Walter. "The recent COVID pandemic saw us lose eleven members, and several retirees since then due to age or conditions. You don't need to be Pavarotti, none

Dancing for Health Local church congregation in Newbold, Chesterfield have raised over £2600 in funds for Dancing for Health CIC to enable their partner dance class to continue for vulnerable people. St Andrew’s United Reformed Church in Newbold, Chesterfield have organised fundraising and donations through the church congregation and local community to ensure this valuable class can continue its good work. Dancing for Health CIC are a not for profit community interest company. They create and deliver specialised dance therapy programmes for vulnerable people. They hold a weekly Partner Dancing session at St Andrew's church hall for those who find physical activity hard to access within their community and for those whose health conditions prevent them from joining a public dance class. The dance classes are specifically adapted and designed with these challenges in mind, they are particularly suitable for older people, those with reduced fitness levels, those with long term health conditions, such as cancer, Parkinson’s or Stroke, or others that feel isolated or lonely. It is a fun, friendly and social group. The modified dancing sessions improve physical and emotional wellness. The group was originally set up with funding from Parkinson’s UK to support people affected by Parkinson disease. Although the class size was small the sessions made a huge impact on the participants involved. When that funding came to an end the class was in danger of closing. The church came to the rescue. The funding raised through the church will now enable the classes to continue for several more months while the class can build in size and hopefully become sustainable and self funded. Cathy, a participant, says, “Having Parkinson’s can make my body freeze and I feel like I have

concrete boots on, but since coming to Dancing for Health Classes I haven’t froze. My GP has said he has noticed a vast difference and improvement and my joints aren’t as stiff.” All participants have been amazed at how dance tailored to suit their conditions has restored mobility and renewed their self-confidence. Cheryl and John say “The classes have put some fun back into our lives, the dance instructors are very professional, patient and understanding of Parkinson’s sufferers needs.” Tracey Barnes, Managing Director and instructor for Dancing for Health CIC says "it is particularly helpful for Parkinson’s sufferers. Volunteers are on hand to support participants without their own partners". Dancing for Health Classes are held every Thursday at 1pm Refreshments are served after the class, giving participants a chance to rest and chat. There is a small charge of £4. Contact Tracey Barnes on 07721 046757 for more information or come along on any Thursday afternoon. Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend or come on your own. dancingforhealth.org.uk

Garden Tips

December Gardening Tips

any people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips.

Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts

Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose Super Aquadulce, a hardy variety. A greenhouse or windowsill can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow seeds for peppers (sweet & chili), tomatoes & onions. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost, but don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbor diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent overwintering spots for essential wildlife. Reduce the watering of houseplants and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mold at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all the leaves you can collect within it. This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year.

Unbelievable Football!!! Hello again Spireites. Well, does football get any better? The short answer is no. The league and getting promoted is going as planned and so far, crossed fingers, so is the Cup. Truth be told, I assumed after our FA Cup win against Portsmouth I'd be focusing on that game here, as the fixture coming up against Barnet would be a close run game probably resulting in a draw, as Barnet are the club in second place (and still in second place I may add lol). But that game in itself was literally a game of two halves. But I'll explain later. So first things first, that cracking game against Paul Cook's old club. On Sunday 5 November Page 78

(Gunpowder, treason and plot) League One leaders Portsmouth came to town. The game would be live on ITV 1 with two football legends, ex Arsenal Ian Wright and ex Spireite Kevin Davies in attendance, standing pitchside with microphones in hand, delivering their comments on the telebox. The game was a near sellout, so the scene was set for what the FA Cup does best, delivering a cup upset. And that is exactly what happened in the 32nd minute. It's reported that around 500,000+ TV viewers saw the ball hit the back of the net from the head of Tom Horton, delivered from the boot of Mandevilles freekick (after DJ was brought down just outside the box). Horton, the former Portsmouth player, headed us into the second round of the greatest football competition in the

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

world. What a sound echoed round the ground when that went in! Our 1-0 win continued our unbeaten record at home and just as important, another clean sheet! Luckily the second round tie was also drawn at home, at the SMH Group Stadium. So not only will that be another sellout game no doubt, but we will get to hear that glorious and contagious sound of the kop chanting with all its might. The game against Leyton Orient is set to be played on 3rd December, so watch this space for that. In fact by the time you read this it has probably been played and we are in the 3rd round where the top flight teams enter the competition. Who would you want to be drawn against? Home or away tie? Personally I'd love to see us play Liverpool at Anfield! Now back to the league. Saturday 11 November was not only the top of the table clash it was the day we remembered the fallen. After the impeccable minute's silence came an eruption of cheer from the sellout game as we showed Barnet just who deserves to be THE top of the league team in this league. Yes the first half was a test but we dealt with the pressures at the back and turned Barnet round with our fortress of defence with counter attack after counter attack. At half time it was as I predicted a draw, 0-0. But then, as Chesterfield started the second half and as usual in the final 45 we stepped up and battered them. I can only recommend you check out the highlights on YouTube of this. There can be no doubt, we have a League One side with the amount of quality of players in this squad. If you do see the goals on the t'internet, you will see the determination of all the players, including the subs, to win the game and get us back into the football league. Dobra, Grigg, Jacobs and Quigley scored the goals and they speak for themselves. Other than injuries I can't see the Spireites failing to get promoted. As it currently stands, we are five points clear and have a game in hand. We are unbeaten at home, unbeatable in the last 15 games now and scored 47 goals this season. The best in all five English leagues. And it isn't even Christmas yet. Good isn't it! COYBs!
