Hi all and welcome to our May edition.

Yet again it's been a busy edition, we seem to be packed with events, exhibitions at West Studios by Mindscapes, the guys responsible for the cover image, new exhibitions at Level Centre in Rowsley to explore, open days for bowling and Woodland Burial Co., Walk for a Cure for Alzheimers at Sherwood Pines, Chatworth 10k in aid of Blythe House Hospicecare, Derbyshire Open Arts - artists across the county open up their homes, workshops and local venues as exhibition spaces, The Chesterfield Cycling Festival takes place with events in June and we are offered some great savings as some of our Independent Business put on offers for a tenner for us all to pick up when we're in town.

Artist Frank Turner attempts a Music Venue Trust record by playing the most gigs in 24 hours, calling into Chesterfield to play Gasoline Bar on Saturday 4 May, one for Simon from S41 Local, a life long Frank Turner fan, some might even say obsessive.

I'll mention the offers again! Nine town centre independent businesses have put on £10 offers for just two weeks. If you've not been into town for a while check out the offers on page 9 and go do your bit to support a small business or two, or three. Plan your day with an early start and pop into a local cafe for breakfast on the way, stay a while browsing, and then lunch perhaps?

Mindscapes

Mindscapes is a support group for people struggling with their mental health, and was established in 2022 by Tim Adwick, a trained mental health first aider. The group use photography to give people time to focus, be present and reduce stress. Tim is the driving force behind the group and between 3 and 21 June the group will exhibit their work at West Studios. They are also responsible for this edition’s cover image and all the images shown on these pages.

I caught up with Tim and Beccy to learn more about Mindscapes and the exhibition. “Mindscapes is a small friendly group that we’ve built over the last couple of years,” explains Tim. “It’s aimed at people suffering with isolation and loneliness and aims to increase and build people’s self-esteem, connections and confidence levels.”

“We meet on Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm at the Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) Hub at the bottom of New Square in town where we socialise for a short time and then set off into town to find a suitable location for photography, often in Queen’s Park, but we do take trips further afield. “We’ve been to Sheffield, Matlock, Bakewell and Kelham Island. We need transport for these trips so ask for a £5 donation from people attending and we are thankful for the support we get from the team at DVA who have helped establish the group.”

With his Mental Health First Aider qualification Tim can signpost people to other agencies and has a thorough working knowledge of the help available across Chesterfield.

“People are carrying a camera in their pocket on their mobile phone, so photography is accessible for most of us and we use photography to bring people together for a brief escape from their daily problems,” says Tim.

“We choose a theme each week, we look at street photography, buildings, architecture etc, and working as a group, people find their comfort zone and we walk around capturing images. We then gather and discuss what people have achieved.

"We use lived experience, training, creativity and photography to support individuals; empowering, enabling and equipping people to see things differently.

“It’s a great way for people to engage with each other and relax. Everything we do is nonjudgemental, no pressure, just do what you like, what you enjoy.

“I like to think we bridge the gap between service providers when people need support. We also have people who come along just for the company and don’t take photographs, anyone is welcome,” says Tim.

The exhibition at West Studios is open from 3 to 21 June for all to see. About 80 pieces will be exhibited from a group of 10 or so photographers and promises to feature an interesting mix of subjects from across town.

It's all too easy to turn to internet shopping and avoid the high street, but I think the internet lacks soul, social interactions and it's not helping these small businesses.

Tale of a Tenner: In case you need reminding of the benefits to the local economy of spending money with local shops.

When I first mentioned the 'Tale of a Tenner' it was the first edition of 2019 BC (Before COVID) and I asked people to consider a new year's resolution, just one way to make a small difference in 2019.

A video by White No Sugar Productions which was done for Totally Locally (hover your phone's camera over the quick code on the right to take you to the video on youtube - or google 'Tale of a Tenner') - is well worth a watch.

The simple story is, a visitor introduces a tenner into a local business and it's then passed around between others before ending back where it started, it never leaves the local economy.

That message is still as important today as it was when I wrote it over five years ago... to try and encourage each and every one of us to consider where we might be able to make changes and support our immediate economy.

A Watercolour Workshop with Sally Anderson at The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden Workshop behind Libby’s on Chatsworth Road is a new venture, a beautiful space set up to run creative classes and so much more. I was invited to get out of my comfort zone and attended a ‘Drawing and Painting Watercolour Workshop’ in this fabulous new creative space.

As I arrive Sally Anderson has the coffee on and reassures me there is no expectation on anyone, no experience is necessary, you just need to be open and ready to get in touch with your creative self – eek!

I was the first to arrive and over the next 30 minutes as others arrived, coffee was sorted, a quick round of introductions and it appeared I wasn’t the only one who doesn’t paint who had chosen to attend a painting workshop! I was feeling a bit more comfortable.

Sally called an end to the gassing and set about a demonstration covering the basics of Watercolour painting. She’s good. It was great to see her make painting so effortless, she talked composition, how we lay out our scene, she covered a few basic techniques, flat wash, wet on dry, pulling etc and before long she had several images and doodles that showed to great effect how things work out.

We were handed a long letterbox shaped piece of paper, folded into four concertina style and then opened out to compose our scene. Down the centre of the table were a few dried flower arrangements… well it didn’t take long for us to trash these as we ripped pieces from them. I was ready to start painting.

I started to pencil sketch the outline of my scene of mixed dried flowers, keeping things simple and not wanting to

overcomplicate it. Then to the brown paint, a watery outline of the sticks and branches of the heavier parts of my scene, uhm things were going quite well I thought.

My problem, I realised, was that I’m a bit of a ‘completer finisher’ I was too keen to start on the next colour, you need a bit of patience with watercolour, letting the layers dry as you build up your layers of colour and texture. However, I ploughed on.

Sally came to see how I was doing and offered some assistance, showing how to use the watercolour pencils to add areas of more intense colour, how to pay a bit more attention to the fine detail of my subject, then using a fine line pen to add more detail and to lift sections of the painting.

We did stop for cake, (baked personally by Libby… thanks Libby much appreciated) and coffee about halfway through. Time to take stock of progress and see how everyone else was getting on. Discussion was extremely positive, everyone seemed to be pleased with things and the smile was the facial expression of choice.

Sally demonstrated how to fill in the background to lift your image and we all returned to finish our creations. I added a background and then spent time making things worse! I had reached a point where I was happy but chose to continue adding and tweaking, whereas on reflection, I really should have stopped!

Libby called in a couple of times to see how we were all doing, always on hand to make sure we were all happy and not wanting anything. Just before lunch we stopped and gathered for a group chat. Had we enjoyed it? Were we pleased with our results? Personally, yes, and yes, what surprised me was two things. Firstly the resulting painting - it appears I wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, see picture for my painting, Simon at S41 Local described it as ‘disappointingly good’! Secondly was how welcoming it had been to do something completely different for a while, to escape the everyday. My company for the morning had been delightful, all local people with a passion for creativity, my host, Sally, had been encouraging and supportive, the coffee and cake was delicious, the new space very relaxing and all in all - I was happy.

Déjà vu opens it's door during the day with a European inspired Cafe for us to enjoy

'Café Culture' is a new business to Chatsworth Road, think laid back coffees, breakfast with a European feel, light lunches throughout the day, and as day turns to night, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Déjà vu.

The venue is 19 Old Road, Chesterfield S40 2RE, 'Café Culture' by day, and by night, Déjà vu.

Marcella Kirk is well known along Chatsworth Road, she’s been running businesses here for 14 years, and loves to ensure we all have a wonderful experience, influenced by her years in France.

"The clue is in the name with 'Café Culture'," she says. "We really wanted to embody that lovely culture of catching up with a friend over a coffee and croissant, or if you just fancied popping in yourself for a lunchtime baguette and a read of a newspaper - a place where you can be sure of the warmest of welcomes.

"By the time people read this we’ll have had our 'Café Culture’ doors open for a few days," explains Marcella. "I’m really excited to be offering our services throughout the day. "Déjà vu is a collaboration between me and my son, Sam," says Marcella. "Sam DJs and hosts some fantastic events during the evenings."

If you’ve never stepped into the premises, you really should. The décor shouts decadence, the cloud painted ceiling with birds flying overhead, classic artworks with a twist, outside spaces taking hints from Marcella’s travels around the world, it’s an escape from the grey clouds on a dull day. In the summer it’s a sparkling place to relax, watch the world go by, socialise or enjoy gorgeous food and then dance the night away. baker at heart and does some amazing deserts, fresh scones and Napoleon cake. Then we have Rhianna our manager, a breath of fresh air and always there to greet you with a smile."

Sam finishes by adding, "we’re over the moon with Déjà Vu and how our first year has been, and we feel 'Café Culture' is the perfect daytime partner. We have an amazing team here and I’m so thankful to them all. We can’t wait to get going."

'Café Culture' opens from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 9am to midday Saturday, and Sundays are dedicated to the fabulous Sunday dinners from 12:15pm. On Thursday to Saturday the pace pics up after the cafe closes, with quiz nights, comedy clubs and live music with a host of local DJs spinning discs to 10pm on Thursday and into the early hours Friday and Saturday.

“It’s wonderful to meet the people who make our work possible!”

Walking side by side to help find a cure for dementia; both those affected by the condition and scientists working hard in the labs are coming together for this year’s Walk For A Cure from Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Family-friendly and accessible to all, Walk For a Cure is a great way to connect with others, as well as a way to raise money for dementia research.

Following on from the success of the inaugural series of events in 2023, the 5km events are back with six family-friendly routes; the nearest being Sherwood Pines, the largest public woodland in East Midlands.

And there is no better time to take part. Almost one million people are living with dementia in the UK, and for which there is no cure.

However, Alzheimer’s Research UK exists to change that. With the backing of its supporters taking part in events like this, the charity won’t stop until dementia can no longer destroy lives. One walker, who knows just how important dementia research is, is Olive Munro, who is living with vascular dementia.

She took part in Walk For A Cure last year and enjoyed it so much she signed up to do it again!

Olive, who loves a walk and has even completed the 780km Camino de Santiago trek through France and Spain, said: “When I was told I had vascular dementia it was very upsetting. I am fortunate that I am currently still able to live life to the full. But I am constantly aware of my diagnosis

and worried about how things will get worse. I do not know what part of my brain will be affected and what I will lose next.

“I know that developments in dementia research are likely to come too late for me, but I’m determined to do what I can to help scientists find a cure so future generations will not be affected.

“I have six grandchildren and I hope that in their lifetimes dementia will become something that people no longer need to worry about. But this will not happen without support for research. That is why I took part in Walk For A Cure.

“And the event was fantastic! It was amazing to see so many folks who have been affected by dementia coming together to do something to support research. I had lovely chats with people during the walk.”

Similarly, one of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s research fellows, Dr Conceição Bettencourt found it a ‘moving experience’.

She said: “I’ve lost close relatives to dementia, and walking in their memory was a unique opportunity for me to reflect, share stories and to feel part of an understanding community. It’s wonderful to meet the people who make our work possible!”

While researchers give us hope of finding a cure for dementia, Dr Bettencourt reminds us it is a team effort. She said: “For me, Walk for A Cure is a vital part of this teamwork. It was wonderful to be with old and new friends, and to hear their stories.

“Their experiences really touched me, and they were a powerful reminder of why I chose this career in the first place.”

A Call Out for Members & Support

A small group of local people have recently set up a new music centre for children and young people across our town, to step into the breach left when North East Derbyshire Music Centre ceased trading at the end of 2023 leaving 100+ young musicians with no local ensemble based musicmaking opportunities.

I caught up with Victoria Barber (Trustee of the group) to learn more. “I am one of five trustees of a children's music centre,” explains Victoria, “We provide ensemble music making opportunities for children and young people in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. Children at all stages are welcome to join us, with no audition just a passion for making music in an ensemble and we have recently located ourselves in a new permanent venue at Brookfield Community School.”

“We currently have over 100 children aged 7 to 18 attending the music centre each Saturday morning to play instruments in ensembles led by qualified musical directors. Players of stringed instruments, woodwind, brass, and percussion are welcome to join our ensembles at any stage in their musical journey. Our senior groups are planning to get out into the community soon to perform during various events taking place locally, so please come and support us.

“We are a registered charity, set up and run by a team of five volunteer trustees, and we are pushing to form a bank of volunteers to assist with the day to day running and activities of the music centre going forward. To date it has just been the five of us on top of full-time jobs, alongside the ensemble directors/conductors.”

Although they are a new charity, they have provided continuous provision for these young people after a previous service (North East Derbyshire Music Centre) closed down after 50 years. There is no similar provision for orchestral and similar music making for this age group in our region (the nearest being Alfreton and Bakewell).

“It was unthinkable to us that such opportunities would cease altogether,” says Victoria. “We have the support of Derbyshire Music Partnership and have become one of their many delivery partners under the new National Plan for Music Education.

Many of our performers play in County level bands and orchestras, and some go on to forge later careers in music related work. Our music centre provides a direct pathway to these opportunities.

“We are funded by parent contributions and an annual allocation of grant funding that comes from the Arts Council via Derbyshire Music Hub.

Our outgoings are mainly the fees paid to the ensemble directors/conductors, and venue hire fees. Right now, we are unable to provide visits to competitions, or other orchestral events due to our financial constraints. We provide a bursary for young people who would find limited finances a barrier to participation.”

“We are seeking funding opportunities to establish an instrument inventory so we can loan instruments to participants, and fund repairs. We also have a need to purchase a new drum kit, percussion instruments, an amplifier and speakers, and new music.

“We are really thankful for the support we have, but unfortunately the old music centre is unable to confirm whether they will donate any equipment/ instruments, which leaves our young people with a gap. We aim to be self-sufficient and the purchase of instruments for use by our students will be a huge help in attracting new students.

“We will be approaching all the schools in our area and hope to showcase what we do with our older musicians.”

If you have a young person who would like to get involved the group meets at Brookfield Community School buildings every Saturday morning from 9am to 12:15pm term time – look out for the banners on the railings.

“As we look at funding and grant options, we appeal to S40 Local readers to help where you can. Local Support is Music to Their Ears

The business community pulls together to help fund a new sound system at Brookfield Community School.

A team of local businesses have pooled their resources to put an end to crackles and feedback by replacing Brookfield’s old microphones and speakers with a state-of-the-art sound system. This really is music to the student's ears!

The PFA, headed by Greg Campbell, explains more. “As a group of Brookfield parents, we come together a few times each term and raise money for the school. When the opportunity arose to match the school’s funding budget for a new sound system, we were quick to accept the challenge. Having the support of Palfreymans from Chatsworth Road, Specsavers Chesterfield, Validate Consulting and Londis all pull together has been a brilliant team effort.”

"We are very lucky to have such a dedicated and hard-working parent association. The BPFA [Brookfield Parent and Friends Association] work tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds to support students at Brookfield,” said Keith Hirst, Headteacher. “The new sound system is something that will benefit the whole school community and I am very grateful for the support of the BPFA, along with local businessesSpecsavers, Londis, Validate and Palfreyman's - in helping to provide this system.”

Specsavers Chesterfield, were the first company to jump on board. “We love to support Fundraising efforts in our Community, and so we were thrilled to help Brookfield with this project. "I've had a strong connection with Brookfield School for many years because lots of their students come to me for their music lessons,” commented Jim from Palfreyman’s Music. “I love to attend the shows and see the pupils perform, so when the PFA approached me about the possibility of upgrading the sound system I was thrilled to be involved. It was an ambitious project, but the end result is amazing. The Little Mermaid last month

was just fantastic, seeing the students showcased as they should be, was a pleasure to watch.”

Validate Consulting also made a substantial financial contribution. “We have been enjoying performances at Brookfield for many years and it has been a pleasure to be able to support the school in this way,” said Damien Eaves, Managing Director of Validate. “We hope that the equipment will be useful to the school for many years to come.”

A few last-minute expenses meant that the system might not have been ready for the musical, but Londis jumped to the rescue! "As a local business on Chatsworth Road, we welcome Brookfield students & Staff into the shop on a daily basis," said Terry Caton, Owner of Londis. "When we were given the opportunity to give back to the school, we were delighted to support. We hope the students, staff and parents of Brookfield Community School enjoy this new equipment."

Representatives from all the local business were treated to a VIP experience at the performance of the Little Mermaid at Brookfield Community School, which ran the week before the half-term break. Once again, the student performances were outstanding, and the new sound system ensured not a single line was missed.

Bell A-Peal for Ashgate Hospice

Bells at every tower in NE Derbyshire with five or more bells will be ringing on Saturday 11 May in aid of Ashgate Hospice.

Everyone is welcome to go and hear the bells, and donations to the hospice are welcome where and when the bells are ringing.

There will be a café at Old Brampton Schoolroom 10:30am to 12:45pm, selling drinks, cakes and lunch snacks, with drinks also available at Killamarsh, Clay Cross and Brackenfield when the bells are ringing

Focus on Holymoorside Artists

With the month of May fast approaching you may already be looking for something to do over the second bank holiday weekend and if you have an interest in art and a liking for home-made cakes then Derbyshire Open arts will definitely have something for you.

Now in its 18th year, this little gem involves over 200 Derbyshire-based artists who either open their studio doors to show you their work and how they work, or groups of artists who exhibit at a local venue. Some will demonstrate their expertise, but others may even let you have a go. It is completely free to visit and usually happens between 10am and 4pm each day.

The nearest venues to S40 and S41 local are Holymoorside Village Hall (with full disabled access) and the Holymoorside United Reform Church. Between the two venues there are 16 artists showing their work, which includes illustration, painting, jewellery, ceramics, textile art, collage and photography. For some of the artists this is your only opportunity to see them exhibit. Refreshments are available at the venues with all proceeds from these going to local charities. Who knew that there were so many talented people on our doorstep? This event is intended to inspire budding artists as well as allowing artists to promote their work. You could even purchase your own special piece of art to take home with you.

With over 60 venues in Derbyshire there is plenty to see and you could make a weekend of it. The website has an interactive map (shown oppsite) so that you can plan your visit and the brochure has a map showing all of the venues across Derbyshire.

With so many artists involved and so many venues it is easy to see why it goes on for three days… and still not enough time to get around all of the venues or sample all of the home-made cakes! Pick up brochures from various venues in Derbyshire or check out the website to plan your visit.

Cycle Chesterfield, a local community group dedicated to promoting cycling in Chesterfield, is gearing up for Chesterfield’s annual Festival of Cycling. This year's festival runs from 7 to 16 June and aims to show-off the cycle infrastructure we have in and around town, promote cycling as an alternative means of transport and build links across Chesterfield communities.

The festival offers a diverse range of activities designed to cater to people of all abilities and ages. From guided rides at a steady, inclusive pace exploring the town's hidden gems to interesting talks by cycle adventurers, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the festival's highlights is the Holmebrook Valley Park Cycle Funday, where families can enjoy a day of outdoor activities and games. This event not only fosters a sense of community but also encourages residents to embrace cycling as a fun and accessible recreational activity. There will be a variety of themed, free, guided recreational rides which will demonstrate some of the cycling infrastructure in Chesterfield and the wider area, including the brand new section of the East/West route. Rides will generally start in the town centre and will head out in a range of directions, including rides taking in Grassmoor, Holymoorside and Hollingwood. The rides will proceed at a steady, inclusive pace.

In addition to rides, we'll be hosting a talk by author, adventurer and cyclist Emily Chappell. Emily was the first woman to finish the Transcontinental Race in 2016, has cycled across Asia from Turkey to China and has authored two books about her exploits.

Moreover, the festival serves as a platform to showcase Chesterfield's cycling culture. From taster sessions for adapted bikes for disabled adults to BMXers showcasing their skills at Ringwood Park to an exploration of some of the town's public art on the Art Trail ride, the festival celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of the local cycling community.

Cycle Chesterfield has been a driving force behind numerous initiatives aimed at improving cycling infrastructure and awareness in the area. Through lobbying efforts and community outreach programs, the group continues to push for safer streets and better cycling amenities, not only improving the quality of life for residents but also contributing to a greener, more resilient future for our community.

[Isolation] Art Mail by multidisciplinary artist Tracey Meek is the culmination of a project that began in lockdown, where participants collectively shared experiences through art. Similar to a chain letter, they received the beginnings of an art piece and were invited to add / respond to the work. Tracey has created new work in

response to the letters, drawing a celebratory conclusion to the project. This work was selected for the Corridors Commission exhibition, a collaboration between LEVEL Centre and QUAD Derby.

Let’s talk about turning green waste into compost!

There has never been a better time to talk about compost! With spring arriving, people need to dispose of their green waste. We should all find ways to manage food waste, such as fruit and vegetable peelings, rather than dumping those into general waste bins.

Methane gas from rotting organic matter sent to landfill makes a significant contribution towards global heating and climate change. Gas emissions from landfills can even be detected from space.

Composting turns green waste into a valuable soil improver and saves money on buying compost. New to composting and don’t know where to begin? Transition Chesterfield runs free community workshops so that people can learn skills for a greener, more sustainable future.

Malcolm Ward is a keen lifelong gardener and champion for composting. He wants to encourage more people to get started. Malcolm takes up the story of his own compost bin: Bert!

"I have several different composting bins, however my favourite one goes by the name of Bert (pictured above). He gives me more compost with less work than any of my other systems. Bert has a waterproof lid, slits in the side, and is about one metre square.

COMPOSTING WORKSHOP

"His working year starts in April when the front is removed. The top six inches of partially composted material is put to one side and the rest is removed which usually fills six or seven wheelbarrows.

"I leave a couple of buckets of old compost in the bottom which is then covered with the partially composted material from the top. Now Bert is ready for another season!

"The first filling is usually grass clippings mixed with leaves, old straw or shredded cardboard, added in six inch thick layers and always mixing the last layer with the previous layer.

"The second filling is a mixture of materials often including cabbage or sprout tops. A word of caution - don’t put the roots of brassicas in the compost as this could lead to the spread of clubroot. As the garden year progresses so does the type of green waste available for composting.

"Different types of composters require different methods of operating. Bert has many different buddies who come in all shapes and sizes.

Composting is not complicated so long as you get the basics right. You could be well on your way to becoming a “composterator”, a person proficient in the art of composting!"

Saturday 23 March 2024 was a glorious day to be a Spireite. So for this article I have decided to let photography do the talking.

If you were there then it'll be etched forever in your heart and that feeling of returning to League 2 will live with you for quite some time. Unless you're Liam Mandeville or Jeff King that is. They probably haven't forgotten after their celebrations lol.
