SUMMER COPY DATE FRIDAY 17th JULY

Hi and welcome to our July edition. It’s been over 100 days since I last wrote an editor’s letter for S41. Since then the our lives have changed, our world has changed. Over the past few months we have seen an unprecedented humanitarian effort filled with kindness, empathy and determination. As a town and a nation we have pulled together to protect and support the most vulnerable in our society. Millions of households stood outside applauding our NHS staff for their heroic and selfless efforts. We ditched cars for bicycles and walked in the sun. Rainbows appeared in our windows as a symbol of hope. The air got cleaner and the birds could finally be heard… As we go to press many local, independent businesses that we have grown to love and rely on are adjusting to the 'new normal'. It’s a challenging time, but with our help and support together we can ensure that they will not only survive, but thrive. Many of our businesses are yet to open resulting in this edition of S41 being slightly smaller than usual, but it's still jam-packed with quality features that will bring a smile to your face. When the high street does open up let’s pledge to buy our fruit and veg from Ibbotson's, our Father's Day cards from Shop Indie, our coffee from the Society and our lunch from Odyssey Greek Restaurant. Man, I've missed our high street! It's true that you never know what you've got ‘til it's gone. As a semblance of normality resumes, let us be mindful of those who have lost loved ones, be grateful for the people in our lives, and thankful to those who have risked their lives on the front line so that we don't have to. Peace, love and positivity. Simon & Bekah

Chesterfield is OPEN

Chesterfield Is OPEN: News Creative Project Words: Paul Chapman Image: Peter Barber

W

hen Peter Barber isn't hand painting murals for Gucci, Farrow & Ball, Omega or helping pain the largest painting in the UK at Pembroke Castle, he's back at home in Chesterfield creating fabulous murals and artwork, H&F, Maison Mes Amis, Brampton Potteries, the Rainbow behind the Spotted Frog are all his work and these are just a few of his local projects (check out his Facebook).

So when lockdown hit his creative started whirring and turned his attention to any old piece of wood he could lay his hands on at home to paint a colourful collection of OPEN signs. He popped them on social media offering them to businesses to display as they opened their doors again following lockdown, and the response was overwhelming.

Step up Helen Rowan, from Helen Rowan Photography who offered to help Pete get some photos of the business owners proudly displaying their signs ready for the time when they can open their doors. As I type 29, businesses have been snapped and they are all shown on the following pages.

I'll be sharing each one on social media and my website as they open their doors. Many are already trading, offering delivery or collection and some essential businesses have never stopped. Page 4

Hopefully by the time you read this, the retail businesses will be open again and pubs and restaurants will be just a few days from opening.

Please support them, support local and support Chesterfield's economy by paying them a visit, but please be respectful of social distancing measures they have in place. Thanks to Peter and Helen for letting us at S40 & S41 Local play our part in this fantastic project.

Odyssey Greek Restaurant A taste of the mediterranean on your doorstep Words: Simon Paterson Images: Monkey Business Studios

W

henever we walk past the Odyssey Greek Restaurant on the corner of Knifesmithsgate one of us always comments how nice it looks. Peeking through the windows at the traditional Greek setting awaiting soon to be happy customers.

So, earlier this year, I decided Bekah and I should have a ‘proper’ Valentine’s night, at a classy restaurant. I booked a table for two 14 February, picturing the brownie points awaiting me as Bekah took her first bite of halloumi, she always orders halloumi.

After what seemed like a lifetime to wait (five days) it was 14 February. The kids were at the grandparents and we were on our way to the Odyssey Greek Restaurant. We were greeted by a big smile, asked us our names and shown to our table.

Looking around it was like stepping through a teleportation portal and landing in Athens! From the beautifully crafted bouzouki hanging on the wall to the authentic tables, chairs and framed pictures of the culturally rich Mediterranean country, it was clear to see the restaurant wasn’t just somebody’s business, but their life and passion! The restaurant has a warm, communal feel, full of positive energy. A complete contrast and a great break from the miserable weather outside, just what we needed on a rare, child free evening.

Bekah ordered the prawn skewers, I know she enjoyed them as she didn’t speak for the whole ten minutes they were on the table and the plate was spotless when the waiter came to collect it! For dessert Bekah ordered a coffee, she was full from the generously sized starter and main. I, on the other hand, never miss an opportunity for dessert. I opted for the Kormos, a Greek word for ‘tree log’ and named after its shape. Kormos is a mixture of biscuits, butter, cocoa, milk, sugar and a bit of brandy, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. When it arrived, I knew I wouldn’t be eating this alone! Bekah shared it, a perfect end to a fantastic evening at the Odyssey Greek Restaurant and we look forward to going back soon. By the way, we also had a bottle of Greek fizzy wine, don’t tell the kids.

At present the restaurant is only doing takeaway, but you can grab an authentic Greek meal in the comfort of your home by calling on 01246 721573 or downloading the City Grab app to your mobile from the app store and ordering a delicious Odyssey dish (or two) to your front door. www.citygrab.co.uk odysseychesterfield www.odysseyrestaurant.co.uk

We were handed menus and wasted no time in perusing them. Spoilt for choice and true to form we ordered the grilled halloumi with fresh tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. The halloumi had a strong savoury flavour, a creamy texture and salty notes. Perfect. On to the main...

I was torn between the Greek meatballs and the pork souvlaki (pork skewers), so I asked the waiter. He suggested the latter, he was right to do so. The pork skewer arrived on a white and blue traditional plate accompanied by a homemade, Greek rice. The pork was tender and carefully seasoned with a special recipe. I made short work of the main! Cover Artist News Andrew Rowan: A Return Pens Andrew Rowan is husband to Helen Rowan, the local photographer whose pictures have graced our cover a few times and is a great friend of the team at S40 Local. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andrew Rowan

H

elen describes Andrew as ‘yet to be discovered talent’ but judging by the cover I think he’s well on the way! So, what makes him tick, how did he arrive at the cover image, why has he not picked up his pens for so long and what’s it like to be part of such a creative family … and what is his day job? I caught up with him to find out, his words follow.

"In my normal life, I work for Derbyshire County Council supporting Schools and Academies across the county and doodling in the back of my notebook during meetings.

Outside of work, I like the same things I’ve liked since I was a kid – records, comics and making people laugh. At least two of those things always find their way into my drawings. I’ve always spent time drawing cartoons with my two sons (who appear on the cover of the magazine!), but during the COVID-19 lockdown, I found myself drawing more often and more seriously. Drawing helps me relax, gives me a massive sense of achievement and – most importantly – it’s fun.

After years of telling me I should do something with my drawings, my wife Helen (who runs her own creative business at Helen Rowan Photography) finally convinced me to set up a dedicated Instagram page. From there, I started working on the cover of this magazine. My idea for the cover was to include as many Chesterfieldrelated things as possible – some of which would be pretty obvious, and some of which would be obscure. So alongside the Crooked Spire, there’s a reference to a theatre, Chesterfields’ most famous drummer, a football legend and a building in another country that has a connection to our town. My personal favourite thing on the cover (apart from my children!) is my attempt to draw Barbra Hepworth’s Rosewall, which feels like a great asset to the town that we don’t make enough of.

I’m currently working on an exciting project related to my obsession with music and still drawing for fun. Follow me on Instagram (@a_r_transmissions) for drawings of hot dogs and Easter Island statues, or send me a message if you want me to draw something for you!" a_r_transmissions

I should Koko Nails, lashes, tanning & all things pretty Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Ross Frisby

t seems like quite some time ago that I popped out to see Missie and Ross at the newly opened KoKo’s salon on The Spires Estate. I am so pleased to feature them in this month’s S41 and thrilled that they will be re-opening their doors on the 4th of July. I’ll be sure to pop down for a glass of fizz! Local couple Missie and Ross are the dynamic duo behind KOKO Tanning and beauty in Bolsover. After smashing their goals and building their business, they decided to take the leap and open a second salon. This came with many challenges from deciding on the right location, renovating a retail unit to sourcing quality and ethical products that represent their brand. March 2020 saw the doors open for the first time and the diary was quickly filling up. Missie has over 10 years’ experience within the beauty industry and has a real eye for anything creative. This became obvious from meeting Missie, she is edgy, quirky and super cool!

Missie and Ross away from the salon are simply mum and dad, this is their driving force behind the KoKo brand, they really want to leave a legacy for their family, I love that about them. They are big supporters of all things local, from the Dave Draws artwork in their salon to using local services for their bookkeeping and shop fitting. They feel it is the duty of Chesterfield businesses to ensure we support each other. We are all for that!

Page 14

If you are looking for ethical, vegan treatments, a warm welcome in a cool salon, then KoKo’s is for you. Top up your lockdown tan, grab a coffee and put the world to rights with the salons in house entertainment – Ross. Your visit to KoKo’s isn’t just about getting your nails done or popping on the sunbed, it’s an experience that will give you a boost and leave you feeling amazing for the rest of the day.

Let’s face it I think after the past few months we could all do with a little boost!

KoKo’s are now taking bookings online for the following treatments: Sunbeds – there are two stand up and one lay down bed, take advantage of the in-house advice and use the top of the range products for the best tan. A 60-minute block booking is currently the bargain price of £20. Nails - Gel polish including nail prep, acrylic extensions and infills - the best products are used such as Gel Bottle and Glitterbels, and safe removal bookings are also available.

Brows and Lashes - Lash and brow tint, natural lash extensions, LVL lashes and safe removal appointments available.

History

Florence. A machine. Words & Images: Ian Kinniburgh

W

ritten prior to lockdown by Ian Kinniburgh, this article feels more relevant three months later as we give appreciation for her life and to the NHS and nurses for their work and sacrifices always but particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic. Florence Nightingale lived from 1820 to 1910 and had local connections to nearby Lea Hurst at Holloway effectively the family's summer retreat.

• • • •

May was the 200th anniversary of her birth and to commemorate Ian has collated a few of the lesser known facts about Florence Nightingale's life.

She nearly died in Crimea and was ill and bedbound for much of her life.

Shunned publicity - travelled back from Crimea incognito as Miss Smith.

Her proven influence was worldwide, UK, USA, Canada, India, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Finland, Egypt, Turkey, Austria & Australia.

• • • • • • • • • •

Born to a very wealthy family, but fame and wealth meant nothing to her.

At the age of 17 she nursed her family through a national flu epidemic.

After the Crimean War she wrote a 900 page report for the War Office.

Powerful organiser, a strict disciplinarian, but with a real sense of humour. Helped soldiers in Crimea to save and send money back to relatives in UK. A genius with facts and figures, and a member of USA Statistical Association.

Trained nurses who made an immediate impact throughout the World.

A “Nightingale” nurse successfully tended the second son of Queen Victoria when he was shot in Australia in 1868. Fluent in French, German, and Italian, she frequently visited these countries. She also met Garibaldi who helped unify Italy.

Page 16

• • •

Brilliant writer and wrote novels eg Cassandra, and a very good mimic.

Involved with the formation of the Red Cross and Geneva Convention. Designed and advised on hospital construction throughout the World.

A huge impact in the liberalising of British colonial policy in India.

God “called her to his service” in 1837 but to what service is unclear.

Declined several marriage proposals and her parents opposed her nursing ambitions, but of course later relented. USA asked her advice on treatment of casualties in the American Civil War.

Single handedly created nurses as the professionals we know them today.

The first UK Air Ambulance (1933) was in Surrey and named “Florence Nightingale”.

To obtain his inheritance her father changed his name from Shore to Nightingale at age 18. William Smith, Florence’s grandfather fought for the abolition of slavery in the early 1800s. He worked with Charles Babbage the founder of early computers and is this from where Florence learnt her mathematics? Her mother, one of 12 children, lived until age 92 and was nursed at her death by Florence. Perhaps her reforms laid the foundations for the creation of the NHS in 1948. She battled for hospital cleanliness to stop infections - a fight that it is still being waged today, 200 years later!

Your local, whole of market mortgage adviser.

B

uying a property is one of the single most important purchases you will make in your life, so it is important to make sure you find the most suitable mortgage for your specific requirements. Local mortgage advisers, SMH Residential Mortgages are here to shine some light on the mortgage application process, and how using a specialist adviser can be a lot more cost effective than a DIY job.

Chesterfield based Dan Lukic, Head of SMH Residential Mortgages explains this in more detail for readers of S40 Local magazine. What is a mortgage adviser? A mortgage adviser, like SMH Residential Mortgages, are qualified mortgage advisers who specialise in finding lenders who will meet your specific needs for a mortgage. We do this by providing you with advice and recommendations on the mortgages most suitable for your circumstances, and managing the completion of your mortgage application at every step of the process. Why should you use a mortgage adviser over finding your own mortgage? As a mortgage adviser, SMH Residential Mortgages will only recommend mortgages that are the most relevant to your individual requirements. We can access mortgage deals not available to the public, even if you go to the lender directly. We have specialist knowledge of which lenders are most Page 18

likely to accept your mortgage application, increasing your chances of reaching a quick, and successful conclusion.

Using a mortgage adviser like SMH Residential Mortgages removes a lot of the paperwork and hassle of applying for a mortgage directly, meaning you can save time as well as ensuring you are getting the most appropriate mortgage deal for your specific requirements. Local advice, on your doorstep SMH Residential Mortgages is headed up by Dan Lukic, a CEMAP and CEFAP qualified Mortgage Adviser based in Chesterfield.

His wealth of experience allows SMH Residential Mortgages to have the ability to find out what is important to each client, making sure the most appropriate lender is found for our clients specific circumstances.

Dan comments: “As a client of SMH Residential Mortgages, we will ensure you get a personal service by finding out what truly matters to you. We value each and every client, and no mortgage application is too big or too small.

Quarantine Cuisine Cooking up a storm

Words: Simon Paterson Images: Edge Events

R

ichard and Laura Alsop are the brains and beauty behind the Facebook movement ‘Quarantine Cuisine’ and some of Chesterfield’s biggest and best events, including the Street Food and Grooves and the Chesterfield Food and Drink Festivals. Together they are Edge Events, a dynamic duo on a mission to bring the flavours of the world to the residents of Chesterfield during lockdown and beyond. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 they have had to cancel several of their events. I know, I’m as gutted as you are. I will not be getting my twice-yearly fix of Disco Fries! However, being the entrepreneurial foodies that they are, they had an idea. A great idea!

When we announced that all our summer outdoor events were postponed until next year, we got an overwhelming response of sympathy from the public that we weren’t expecting at all. In response to this we came up with the idea of ‘Quarantine Cuisine’. The concept was straight forward and would enable us to show our appreciation for the publics support over the years, because without them our events simply wouldn’t exist. We created a community platform via a Facebook group page where people share their ‘food & drink’ related photos, recipes and step by step instructions, which people can then replicate in their own kitchens. The group welcomes food from all around the world and we also ask for their favourite tipple to wash it down with. It’s a fun idea and it offers a tiny bit of distraction during these tricky times. At the end of the day who doesn’t like to dance around their kitchen cooking their favourite meal and having a few drinks at the same time? Page 20

Richie kindly sent us an invitation to join the group shortly after it was set up and it began to grow, quickly!

“We reached over 1,000 group members in a week and have since hit the 2,000 mark, which we are really chuffed with! I think people find it welcoming, interactive and interesting due to all the new recipes introduced to them. It also offers a productive distraction during these strange times, bringing like-minded people together (foodies) in a safe place”.

The group has members from all walks of life and cooking abilities. From John, the Head Chef at the Three Cottages to me, reasonable with a toaster and a microwave. Whether you’re a professional Chef looking for new recipes, or just looking to try something new. There is something for everyone here. “There are so many tasty dishes and what we offer is a nonjudgement page. There are lots of chefs in the group and a lot of people who have less experience or just started cooking. What we do is make sure the page is welcoming to all levels .The page is offering so many different cooking styles and food groups.

Meat, seafood, vegetarian, vegan, there really is something to match all pallets”.

Despite most of the country being on lock-down at the time of writing this, many of our local independent food suppliers are open and in need of our business. There has never been a better time to shop local and support our economy. Sourcing your ingredients locally is a great way to do this.

www.s41local.com

The best way to source ingredients, whether it’s fresh meat and veg or ground spices for a curry, is to ring the local businesses or message them via Facebook. Ask what they have in stock and tell them what you need. We are really trying our hardest to spread the spend across as many businesses as possible to make sure we at least give a bit to help them through these tricky times. Especially, if there is no delivery service as it means we can really help spread our spending. Many outlets are being so helpful when we contact them.

Some have even delivered the food within an hour, which we couldn’t believe! Communication is the best way to work with these businesses and to source the ingredients. Edge Events plan on keeping ‘Quarantine Cuisine’ going and have some innovative ideas on how to keep us all engaged and entertained during this challenging period.

We already have some plans in place to give it longevity. The cook-a-long sessions we are filming from our own front garden is showing our intent of trying to build on the group and keep moving it forward. We have guest chefs lined up from the group and production are on board. It’s relaxed, informal and a lot slower than how the professionals do. I’m sure people will be able to keep up or maybe we won’t be quick enough!

glazed windows, UPVC conservatories, composite doors and more recently orangeries.

Thirty-eight-year-old Linacre entrepreneur, Lee, runs the business alongside his long-term girlfriend, Michelle from Walton.

Lee openly admits he is no salesman and during visits he simply advises potential customers on the best products for their home and leaves them a free, no obligation quote.

ocal couple Lee Miller and Michelle Joyce are the brains and the brawn behind Chesterfield based firm The Window People.

Founded in 2016 by Lee, he bought himself a van, registered as self-employed and set off on a mission to provide fantastic customer service and great products at an affordable price. Mission accomplished Lee!

"Me and Michelle live and work together in harmony haha. Seriously, we do make a great team. Michelle handles all the office stuff brilliantly, which I’m not a fan of and I handle all the installations, ensuring the highest standards are met," says Lee.

“Orangeries are proving a very popular addition to our range, and like all of our products they are backed by a ten-year guarantee. They are an all year usable room with a bit of the wow factor. Our products are manufactured locally, keeping money in the local area and are ‘A’ rated energy efficient”.

If you would like a chat with Lee, then give The Window People a call on 01246 900981.

Lee saw success early on in his business adventure and expanded the company quickly. Having met Lee in person I have no doubt his outgoing and friendly personality played a huge part in his early success with him out in the field everyday chatting to customers and leading on installations.

"Running a business in Chesterfield is great as it’s a town on the up. In many ways it feels like living in the big city, but with a community feel about it. The people are always so friendly, and we get a lot of our work through recommendations from friends, family and previous customers”. The Window People’s expansion has created jobs in the local area, now employing two fitters and two apprentices. Lee has over 20 years of experience in the industry and is happy to be able to pass on his expertise to the team. "Being able to employ local people and offer apprenticeships to the next generation is important to me and something I never dreamed of when I bought my van back in 2016. I have a great team behind me and hope to create even more jobs and opportunities in the future, passing on my knowledge and skills along the way," Lee goes on to say, "over the years The Window People have expanded their product range installing double Page 22

Pram Cleaning & Refurbishment

ormer teacher and local mum of two Anna Higham is the ‘mumtrepreneur’ behind As Fresh As A Daisy pram cleaning, restoration and refurbishment. Anna started her venture around six months ago after leaving the education sector and was ready for a new challenge. Scrolling through social media (as most of us do) she saw a pram for sale at just £10. "I was browsing one day on an online marketplace, saw a pram for sale and thought 'I can do something with that’. Looking at the pictures I was sure they didn’t tell the full story, but for £10 it was worth a punt. I went ahead and bought the pram. I was right, it needed quite a bit of work, but I was willing to put the time and effort in, learning some new skills along the way. Upon inspection I could see the handlebars needed re-covering with leather, all the plastic needed buffing up and restoring, and the fabric required some stitching and a bit of TLC. I set to work right away and sometime later (quite a lot of time) it looked like new! I was really happy with the work I had done and was able to sell it on for a profit. It was at this point I thought ‘this could be a really good sustainable, environmentally friendly business’ and ‘As Fresh As A Daisy' was born". Anna moved to Chesterfield 13 years ago with her husband, Jon. She taught in nursery and reception years at a school and loved her time with the children.

There’s a big push to reduce, reuse or recycle and my business is doing its bit to help."

Anna buys all her supplies from local, independent ventures like herself and is a big high street fan.

"I love the fact you can just pop into town and pop out again! I’ve lived in cities before where it’s difficult to do that and venturing in the centre is a big job! My favourite shop is Fred’s Haberdashery, they have a wonderful selection of products and I pretty much get all my supplies there. It’s important to support local businesses and keep money in our local economy. Starting my business has led me to be more mindful of where I spend my money". Anna works from home and it’s clear she enjoys what she does. Her services start from just £2.50 and she sells restored, good as new prams from as little as £50.

"For many families buying a new pram simply isn’t affordable. I love being able to offer less well-off families top branded prams such as Silver Cross and Mamas & Papas for as little as £50! If you are thinking of throwing your old pram away, don’t! I can bring it back to life and make a local family who can’t, or don’t, want to spend hundreds of pounds on a pram very happy." At S40 and S41 we love Anna’s environmentally friendly company, and we are sure she will be ‘pushed off her feet’ in no time.

"I really enjoyed my time as an early years teacher. At this age they are still amazed and excited by the simple things in life but I knew I was ready for a fresh challenge and wanted to build something of my own. I do miss the pupils though, well, most of them anyway haha". As a mother of two herself she was all too familiar with how worn out, damaged and tatty pushchairs, strollers and child car seats can get overtime.

"Pushchairs, prams and child car seats are so expensive these days, some cost well in excess of a thousand pounds! It makes sense to look after them, service them every now and a§gain, and repair them if they break. We have a tendency to throw things away once broken and buy new. Page 24

Georgie Mills The next big thing, in a small package Words: Simon Paterson Images: Joanne Mills

Georgie Mills

I

f you haven’t seen Georgie Mills sing yet, you better be quick as this time next year she could be a global mega star, yes, she is that good!

The 14-year-old Outwood Academy Newbold student has already won a plethora of accolades including: • Chesterfield’s Got Talent (winner) • Eckington’s Got Talent (winner) • Dronfield’s Got Talent (winner)

• Peak FM Homegrown Talent (winner) • Trades Got Talent (winner) • Teen Star (finalist)

• The Voice Kids BBC (invitation to participate) • Got what it takes (BBC winner)

As well as winning several local events, Georgie was a finalist on Teen Star where she was picked up and asked to audition on the hit BBC show The Voice kids! She had the pleasure and challenge of singing to WILL.I.AM, Pixie Lott, Danny Jones and Jessie J.

So, your mum is your biggest fan, agent, manager, cheer leader etc…she taxis you all over the place including Manchester to appear on the The Voice Kids! How did you end up getting such a great opportunity? A talent scout spotted one of my performances at Teen Star on Youtube and invited me to a Producers audition. Over 10,000 young people were invited to audition, and I made it to the last sixty. I sang to Will-I-Am, Pixie Lott, Danny Jones and Jessie J. Pixie was just about to press the button when the song finished. I got to meet them all backstage and Pixie Lott told me to keep going and never give up, so I won’t. During the summer holidays (2019) you lived in the Music Mansion, as a contestant on the CBBC show ‘Got What It Takes’. The grand prize was to sing on the main stage at the BBC Big Weekend Festival, in front of 20,000 people. What an unbelievable achievement and opportunity. How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner?

Brilliant! Who do you most admire as an Artist?

I couldn’t believe that I had been voted through by the public. Singing in the final in front of the judges was just amazing and I was speechless when the winner was announced, I really didn’t think I was going to win. All the other contestants were so good. It was such a Close competition and I have made friends for life. We still aren’t sure what the prize is. The BBC are keeping in touch and promise something when things are back to normal.

I really like Freya Ridding’s, she's a massive inspiration because she has dyslexia and she hasn’t let it hold her back, I can relate to that. I also like Billie Eilish because she chills me out.

What are your ambitions for the future, Georgie? I want to be a singer, it’s all I’ve ever wanted. It’s my passion, my life, I can’t see myself doing anything else!

What is your most memorable performance, the one you most enjoyed?

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this homegrown superstar and wish her all the best in her career. Go Georgie!

We were keen to interview Georgie before her future world tour starts!

How old were you when you realised you could sing? I was about six years old; I think. There was a talent competition at Abercrombie Primary School which I entered when I was seven, and I won it. I have been singing ever since.

It has to be Birkfest! It’s ran by Andy Birk to raise money for Fairplay in Chesterfield. I sang with the band Rogue for the day and it was so much fun. Page 26

Garden Tips

July Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

Page 28

There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. 1. If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept well-watered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway. 2. Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly. 3. Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them. 4. Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use. 5. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds) - harvest these before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway. Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway. (Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap at the Brampton Food Fair in October). 6. Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed. 7. If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell. 8. Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway! 9. There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and make sure they have been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover. 10. Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way. Children like to see instant results, so use these as a way of introducing them to gardening. www.s41local.com

Chesterfield Football Club Seaon review Words & images: Michael South

H

ello, and welcome to my new football page dedicated to bringing you all the footy action direct from the Proact.

I'm Michael of Michael South Photography. A local bloke who supports and photographs Chesterfield F.C, and I am very happy to be aboard! 2019/20 - The season that never was. When the season kicked off back in August who would have guessed how it would have played out and how it would all be for nothing! There were, however, a few highlights along the way: club legend Ernie Moss' attendance for his 70th birthday in October, which was marked with a minutes applause on the 70th minute! The previous season saw the Spireites fail to regain promotion back to the football league. Chesterfield ended up sitting quite comfortably in the lower half of the National League (the Conference in old money).

During the football break Chesterfield fans had hoped that John Sheridan's reprisal at the helm would continue his winning ways by bringing back the bounce to the club.

However, the following seven months would show just how wrong they were. After the friendlies were out the way (winning just two of the six games) the seeds of doubt were sown, as the opening match of the campaign ended with a home 1-1 draw against Dagenham and Redbridge... and to be honest, the season didn't get much better after that!

The next ten matches didn't go Sheridan's way either, winning none. This got some fans starting to question whether Shezza was the right man for the job. Where had the fight gone after bailing them out following Martin Allen's departure last season? The players it seemed, didn't want to play for him anymore. The rumour mill started, had Sheridan lost the dressing room? As the results continued to slide from Chesterfield, so were the play-off’s and eventually the league seemed to slip away from the blues once more. After the boxing day fixture, Chesterfield were down to 23rd place and things looked bleak.

losing 3-0 away at Solihull was the final straw. For the second time in his CFC career, John Sheridan was sacked having lost 13 games, drawn nine and winning only four of the 2019/20 season. Ironically though, another ex Spireite manager replaced Sheridan!

John Pemberton was offered the job on a temporary basis and immediately the players seemed to play for him. The Spireites won four and drew two in his first nine games in charge. The memorable home games for me came with an impressive comeback in February against Wrexham. With Curtis Weston's 94th minute winner bouncing in and out across the goal line, (see pic) reminiscent to the club's 1997 disallowed semi-final goal in the FA Cup. This secured the valuable three points for the Spireites with a 3-2 win.

The following home game saw Chesterfield destroy Ebbsfleet 4-0 at home and create a new club record with a second half, 23 minute hat-trick by Nathan Tyson coming off the bench. The first CFC player EVER to be subbed on and proceed to score three goals! Currently, at the time of writing the UK is on lockdown, and the Spireites have had their season cancelled after the league clubs voted in April, to void the season. Of the 46 fixtures only 38 matches were ever played. Chesterfield's last competitive game of the season was played away at Dover, on the 14th of March from which the Spireites returned with a point and continued their climb up the league, finally pulling themselves out of the drop zone where they had spent a lot of the season hovering. So, the future? At the time of writing this it’s unclear when the national football league will get back to normal, but one thing is certain. When it does, I will be bringing you my monthly Spireite report with photography to match, So I'll see you then!

By the blow of the final whistle on the first game of 2020, Sheridan's fate was sealed. Chesterfield Page 30

Environment Sport

One Man's War On Plastic Words & Image: Greg Hewitt

H

i I’m Greg, I’ve lived in Chesterfield for nearly a year and a half, and I’m a person who is passionate about taking environmental action.

Before moving to Chesterfield, I had previously been involved in a campaign to stop fracking for gas in the UK, where I learnt about national companies wanting to frack in Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire and use the gas as a feedstock to produce plastics. Around the same time Blue Planet 2 aired, David Attenborough passionately enthused thousands of people to think about our impact on the planet due to the huge swathes of plastics entering our oceans, causing pollution and deaths of marine life. April 2020 and a new documentary is released called ‘The Story of Plastic’, bringing attention to plastic production. Since Blue Planet 2 a big focus has been on cleaning up plastic pollution - beach, river cleans and money invested in technology to collect plastic from the ocean, without attention being drawn to what is really driving our plastic pollution crisis - the oil companies spending billions of dollars on plastic production. The UK government’s move to put a moratorium on fracking in the UK has helped switch attention.

Having watched The Story of Plastic, I disccover that $204bn has been invested in 334+ new petrochemical facilities to help produce more plastic. Communities in Indonesia and India were cleaning up their coast from the swathes of plastic pollution, yet every day more and more pollution was continuing to pour in. Clean-up of plastic pollution is still important, and the work that Don Catchment Rivers Trust does around Chesterfield’s rivers and streams is incredible, however, the focus needs to shift to doing something about the $5.2 trillion of subsidies for the fossil fuel industry producing more and more plastics. Now we are faced with a global pandemic and more people were starting to think ‘what happens as lockdown ends?’ A national poll revealed that only 9% of Britons wanted life to return to ‘normal’. On social media I saw the graphic shown. There seems to be a growing appetite for a ‘new normal’, and the theme appears to be for an environmental improvment. Lockdown provides us with the opportunity to reflect on and pursue positive environmental changes. ‘The Story of Plastic’ suggests we ‘turn off the tap’ to stop Page 32

plastic pollution at the source. Perhaps a potential opportunity is through the upcoming piece of legislation, The Environment Bill. So I urge people to investigate plastic production, the Environment Bill, and write to your MPs (www.writetothem.com). As well as calling for international and national action, I also feel it is very important to take action locally. So in June 2019 I set up Plastic Free Chesterfield to work across the whole community, with businesses, schools, and community groups to take action on single-use plastic. Almost a year on, over 40 businesses, 20 community organisations, and nearly 10 schools have signed up to the campaign where: • Businesses make at least three “swaps” away from single-use plastics • Community organisations pledge to reduce single-use plastic in their group/organisation • Schools sign up to the Plastic Free Schools programme

A recent survey from Surfers Against Sewage revealed that COVID-19 has made people realise they want to do more to reduce plastic use. I love this quote from Anne Bonneau: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” So if you’ve already started or are about to embark on your plastic-free journey, Plastic Free Chesterfield would love to hear from you. Join our Facebook group ‘Plastic Free Chesterfield group’, introduce yourself and share your story. Stories can be incredibly empowering, inspiring and motivate others to act. I look forward to seeing you there. www.plasticfreechesterfield.org.uk www.facebook.com/plasticfreechesterfield www.twitter.com/plasticfreechez www.instagram.com/plasticfreechesterfielduk
