CHRISTMAS COPY DATE FRIDAY 13th NOVEMBER

Intro

Hello and welcome to the November edition of S41 Local Magazine. We're grateful to be able to deliver another top notch magazine created with passion and love for our local community. As a family with young children, one at Nursery and one at Junior School, finding activities to keep them entertained in this new world has been challenging. We have taken to the outdoors and as a result we have found some great parks and been on some lovely nature walks, educating the kids along the way, every cloud! We highly reccommend taking advantage of the weather (before it turns cold) and taking in the beautiful autumnal colours. For most of 2020 we have been printing a reduced edition of S41 due to you know what! We are very happy to say that, with your support we are back up to a 52-page publication, packed with interested local articles and informative business news. In this edition we meet cover artist Maria of me&thee and find out where she got the idea for her products, featuring our fantastic local dialect. Creative writing superstar Molly shares with us her favourite Derbyshire brunches. Aaron is back with episode two of S40 Time, featuring the lead singer with the well-established Matlock band, Patawawa. The actress Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven – Stranger Things) chose one of their tracks to be used in her new cosmetics marketing campaign. Pretty cool! Michael is back with his regular Chesterfield Football Club update and we meet some new, local business owners. We hope you have a great November and we can’t wait to start work on our Christmas edition. Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah and the kids

me&thee Meet local illustrator Maria Brannen. Words: Simon Paterson Illustration: Maria Brannen, me&thee

M

aria Brannen aka ‘me&thee’ is the creative entrepreneur behind this month’s front cover. We’ve been following me&thee on Instagram and love her products adorned with our very own Derbyshire/South Yorkshire dialect; us Chesterfield lot are a mix of both! Maria grew up in Chesterfield until she left on an adventure to Liverpool University to study languages. Her degree enabled her to travel, spending a year studying in Aix-en-Provence, where she grew to love the French life so much that she decided to stay, working as a seasonaire in the Alps, where she met her husband, Craig. After spending two seasons in the Alps, it was time to come back to the UK, and they settled in Edinburgh and began a career copy writing for corporate affairs departments at several different companies.

Just over 10 years ago Maria returned to Chesterfield as a wife and mother to two beautiful children and a crazy dog!

When did you set up me&thee? "I created me&thee out of a love for our rich and often funny local dialect. In all honesty it was a creative outlet while I was on maternity leave with my youngest. That was six years ago! I didn’t do anything with my initial four designs until October last year when I created an Instagram account for me&thee and selling products on Etsy. “The idea came from my time spent away from Chesterfield. New friends would always try to guess where my accent was from, and although they’d rarely guess correctly, they had a lot of fun trying to ‘do’ the accent."

How many different designs and dialects are on your products? "I have 13 designs in total including ‘dead chuffed’ and ‘be reyt’. The initial four were ‘ey up duck’, ‘mardy bum’, ‘gaffer’, and ‘bobby dazzler’. "My designs are a light-hearted take on the way we speak, explained in a dictionary definition style for those who perhaps aren't as familiar with the words and phrases. My main aim is to make people smile, and create cards and gifts that do just that. All my products have a different, local saying on. They provide a sense of belonging, of Page 4

'this is us, and who we are'. And hopefully spark nostalgia as we remember some of the funny sayings our parents and grandparents used."

What do you like about the North Derbyshire/ South Yorkshire dialect? "There’s a down to earth friendliness about our accent and dialect. In my Instagram feed, I talk about what these phrases and sayings mean to me, and it’s mostly rooted in family experiences growing up.

Which local independents sell your products? "It has only been a year in October since I started actively working on me&thee, and I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to work with some brilliant independents. In the past few months I’ve started to sell my products in city centre shops in Leeds and Nottingham. The two local shops that have supported me since the beginning are Shop Indie in Chesterfield and Abode in Dronfield. I prefer to sell exclusively in to one shop per area, so that my products are unique to them. It also allows me to build a relationship with them and keep on top of stock demand." What do you love the most about Chesterfield? "It has to be our proximity to the Peak District. It’s like a big adventure playground, perfect for family fun exploring new places. It’s such a beautiful part of the country and we (the family) love being outdoors."

So, what are your plans for the future of me&thee? "My immediate focus is Christmas. I’m excited to be taking part in a retail pop-up at the Sheffield branch of John Lewis. It’s being run by a company

www.s41local.com

called Curated Makers, who bring together local artists/ makers and stock their products for sale within a high street store. This event runs from 2nd November all the way through till Christmas, so it’s a brilliant exposure opportunity for small independents like mine. "Then in January I’ll be able to take a proper look at my business strategy and where I’d like to take me&thee in our second year."

To celebrate me&thee's first birthday (15th October), Maria is offering 15% off to all of our readers. Visit her ETSY store online:

There must be someone you know who deserves one of Maria's fabulous products? Go on put a smile the face of the recipient!

FIVER FEST: 10 to 24 October Independent businesses coming together to highlight their contribution to the great British high street and Chesterfield is taking part. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Totallylocally

T

o demonstrate the importance of supporting our high streets, Chesterfield is joining with over 100 Independent High Streets across the UK, to put on special £5 offers across two weeks in October, in the TOTALLY LOCALLY FIVER FEST.

£5 massages, £5 local meat packs, £5 best-selling book offers, £5 lunch deals and even axe-throwing for a fiver!

FIVER FEST is a free to join campaign, devised and run by Totally Locally, a grass roots High Street organisation that has been helping businesses and High Streets to help themselves since 2010 with incredible results.

YouGov research has shown that 59% of shoppers have used more local shops to support them during lockdown, so let's continue that support.

Independent shops and businesses make our town special and unique. Businesses appreciate it when we support them, and these offers are to say thank you for that support, showing just what great value local businesses are.”

“We know Fiver Fest isn’t going to change the world”, said Chris Sands of Totally Locally, “But small changes in spending habits can really make a difference to our high streets. By diverting £5 of our weekly spend to local independents we give them a fighting chance to thrive. It’s an action worth taking!”.

This Fiver Fest, Totally Locally is calling on consumers to divert £5 of their weekly spend to support the small businesses in their communities.

At the time of going to print, many people were still thinking about their Fiver Fest offers but those I do know of are shown opposite. Please look out for Fiver Fest posters between the 10th and 24th October.

Fiver Fest is based around the Totally Locally £5 message:

“If every adult in Chesterfield spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £20.4 million per year going directly into our local economy. Which can lead to more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy & a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn’t it?!”

Spending just £5 a week with a local independent makes a big difference to our High Street, and “Fiver Fest” promotes this message.

In 2019, 43 towns joined in and the result was phenomenal with reports of new customers, people rediscovering shops they hadn’t been into for years, and huge sales of £5 offers. Over the two consecutive Fiver Fests, the number of towns taking part has now reached over 100.

Fiver Fest Offers are often imaginative and varied;

Page 8

Even if you don't see a poster, you can still show your support by trying out a new independent business and spending a fiver (or more) with them. Happy shopping.

Call for Help! In Chesterfield we've been talking about Totally Locally now for a while... and it's been a slow build, as no-one seems to have any time or energy to really drive it! If you are local, looking for a voluntary role, know about social media and are not connected to the council - a recommendation from Totally Locally towns that have been successful, please get in touch. I'd love to speak to you about how, together, we can make this bigger and better!

Food

Anyone for brunch? Five of the best brunches our county has to offer Words & Images: Molly Scott

W

Qoozies are also on the City Grab food delivery app so you can enjoy one of their delicious breakfasts from the comfort of your own home.

Here are five of my favourite places to have brunch in and around Chesterfield.

This popular French themed restaurant on Chatsworth Road serves up all the usual breakfast and brunch dishes in addition to a continental breakfast and their famous croque monsieurs.

hether it’s breakfast or brunch, there’s been a huge surge in people eating the first meal of the day outside the home over recent years. I always think it feels like a huge treat to go out for breakfast or brunch. It’s also a much cheaper way to dine out.

Bottle & Thyme, Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield Bottle & Thyme is THE place to go for brunch in Chesterfield. Their eggs Benedict is my all time favourite (just be aware that what’s described on their menu is technically eggs florentine, with spinach, so remember to specify you want bacon too and remove the spinach if that’s not to your taste - personally I love it but definitely want the bacon too. I would also recommend the smashed avocado and French toast. In fact, it’s all good. You won’t be disappointed! The coffee is also exceptional, as is the decor and ambiance. Booking is highly recommended particularly at weekends although they do take walk ins if they have space. Koo, Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield Situated at the top end of Chatsworth Road, the atmosphere at Koo is very much that of a neighbourhood café. It’s really friendly, even to dogs. I love sitting outside and watching the world go by. They have patio heaters and cosy blankets, it's just lovely.

I have worked my way through most of their breakfast menu over the years and with all honesty can say without reservation that it's all delicious. Altough I prefer to order the dishes without hollandaise sauce. Exceptionally good coffee again. Booking is currently essential.

Maison Mes Amis, Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield

It’s also the place to go in Chesterfield for a bottomless brunch. Sharing boards of cheese, pâté and baguette and two hours of free flowing bubbles for £25pp. Restrictions apply and booking is essential. Devonshire Arms in Middle Handley This delightful gastro pub is less than a fifteen minute drive from Chesterfield. I visited recently and had the most wonderful eggs Benedict. The rest of the menu looked equally delicious, and I’ve already got my eye on the pancakes for my next visit. Booking currently essential. Do you have any reccomemdations for days out and restaurants that you'd like to see featured, or just for me to enjoy! Then drop me an email: girlaboutderbyshire@outlook.com or DM me on Facebook and Instagram. Thanks for reading and following. Molly

@girlaboutderbyshire girlaboutderbys www.girlabout.co.uk/derbyshire

Qoozies, Steeplegate, Chesterfield Qoozies prides itself on offering healthier fast food. There are loads of lighter options for breakfast, freshly made, vitamin filled juices and smoothies etc... but I’m afraid I’m usually drawn to the more gluttonous options. My favourites are the biscoff and strawberry pancakes and the cruffin: a muffincroissant hybrid. Delightful! Page 12

Galaxy Travel Supporting the front line

Words: Simon Paterson Images: Helen Rowan Photography

G

alaxy Travel, the go to transport company for wedding cars and airport runs launched their new 24-hour taxi service at the start of August, but with a difference! Local family man and owner of Galaxy Travel, Dave Lewis, is on a mission to not only provide the best taxi service in Chesterfield, but the most community focussed, socially conscious one as well.

Like most of us, Dave was racking his brain on how to help and support the people of Chesterfield during this time of uncertainty. Having seen the monumental effort by our NHS, Care homes and Hospice staff on the front lines…he knew what he had to do. For over 17 weeks Galaxy Travel provided free transport to all Ashgate Hospice staff commuting to and from work! This was an amazing act of generosity and an incredible team effort.

Dave hasn’t stopped there! as a thank you to our selfless NHS, care home and hospice staff, whom we all clapped for every Thursday over the summer, Galaxy Travel offer a permanent discount of 20% on all journey’s both work and personal. When booking a cab tell the operator you work for the NHS a care home or hospice, show the driver your NHS/Ashgate or care home ID badge and Galaxy will discount your entire journey by 20% and thank you for your service.

Page 16

We asked Dave about his generosity and gratitude. He had this to say:

“Being a lifelong resident of Chesterfield, it’s important to give a little back to a town that has given me, and my family so much. Seeing firsthand the amazing work by all the staff at Ashgate Hospice and the Chesterfield Royal, I knew this was a good place to start”.

Galaxy Travel are well on their way to opening their first 24-hour taxi office on Chatsworth Road. To commemorate the occasion, in true Galaxy style they are putting on the ‘Big Bang Raffle’ with some great prizes including £150 cash and a meal for two. Be sure to grab your tickets from one of their drivers on your next journey. Keep an eye out for their super tasty Spooktacular 24-hour bake sale! All proceeds will go to Ashgate Hospice. It's always great to see businesses thrive in Chesterfield, especially the one’s who do so much for our local communities. So, why not make your next journey, a Galaxy journey, they really are a company out of this world. Call: 01246 272727

Introducing Abigail Newest member of the Rosewood team

W

e are delighted to introduce Abigail, as the newest member of the Rosewood Wealth team. Whilst studying Level 3 Business at Chesterfield College, she developed a passion for finance. Abigail’s ambitious attitude at the outset of her career in this sector, her engagement with analytical challenges, as well as her natural talent for business and finance made

her the perfect candidate for Rosewood’s apprenticeship scheme. On top of her skillset and dedication, what makes Abigail such a good fit at Rosewood is her friendly manner and bubbly personality. We’re sure that you will agree when you’re greeted at the office for your next appointment! Welcome to the team Abby! We are thrilled to have you on board.

Toy Appeal 2020 At Rosewood Wealth, we are delighted to announce that this year we will be supporting Chesterfield Royal Hospital by running a toy appeal in which we will be collecting donations of toys for the children who will spend this Christmas on the Nightingale Ward. The importance of providing support in the community has always been a part of our ethos at Rosewood. This Christmas, we could not pass up the opportunity to give back to Chesterfield Royal and show gratitude for all of the crucial work that our local hospital and its staff have done for our town in the last year. We had a fantastic response with last year’s toy appeal and hope to do so again with one extra set of hands at Rosewood. ‘I am so

excited to be able to be part of the toy appeal, it’s an amazing feeling to know that we are making a difference to families who have children in hospital at Christmas’ says Abby, the newest member of our team. To participate in the Toy Appeal, you simply need to donate a new, unwrapped toy and drop it off at the Rosewood Wealth Office on Brimington Road. The gifts can cover a range of ages from newborn babies all the way up to 17 years old. We will be accepting donations right up until the 16th of December.

Charity

Support local charities… Join us online for a quiz, auction and a raffle that includes a Crackerjack Pencil! Words: Paul Chapman

J

oin us on Saturday 14 November between 7 and 9pm, for the Chesterfield Satellite Rotary Club online quiz, raffle and auction. Entry is £15 with all funds going to local charities. The only restriction on numbers in a team is how many are in your bubble and how many people you can get round your screen!

The event has kindly been sponsored by Home Instead, Elliot Mather Solictors and BRM Solicitors, and at the time of going to print tickets had been selling well. With no limit to the number of Zoom attendees able to take part we’re hoping to exceed last year’s amount raised, but that's where we need your help to sell as many tickets as possible. Why not sign up and challenge your, friends, family or neighbours to take part?

For the last few years, the Rotary club has hosted a quiz at the Loundlsey Green Community Centre, last year raising £1,800 for local charities. With COVID restrictions this year it’s taking place online. Thanks to Zoom … if you’ve not come across Zoom, it’s an application that allows video and audio conferencing, (Google it) and what’s more, you can join in the fun from the comfort or you armchair.

In addition to what promises to be a great night’s entertainment we’ve enlisted the legendary Bernie Clifton to get things off to a fun start, and he’ll be popping onto the call throughout the night. We know many charities have found this year tough and we’ll be supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and The Elm Foundation with our event.

The quiz will consist of six of rounds of ten questions, the picture quiz always goes down well plus we hope to do a music round and video clips. They’ll be an auction with items kindly donated from Brampton Barbers, Fred’s Haberdashery, Michael South Photography, S40 & S41 Local magazines, Shop Indie, Specsavers, The Creation Station, and many more.

Page 20

The event normally serves up pie and peas but obviously this can’t happen, but you could preorder a takeaway and maybe accompany it with a local brewed beverage, there is a good choice to be had, I hear!

Tickets (via website) are £15 for a team of any size and covers £10 entry plus 5 x £1 raffle tickets. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased on the night and we're hoping for some great auction bids.

All details can be found on the web and social media, links as below. I look forward to seeing you on the night, virtually of course!

Shining a Light on the Creativity of Chesterfield Kakou and Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership Words & Image: Kakou

K

akou is an engineering social enterprise that aims to bridge the gap between the sciences, creative arts and social wellbeing. We believe that the arts contribute significantly to the artistic, cultural and economic life of communities; building social cohesion, making places special as well as improving the health and wellbeing of individuals. Kakou was one of the first businesses to move into the new Incubation Hub at the University of Derby's St Helena's Campus. Since then Kakou, has grown from strength to strength.

As a response to the Cultural Education Challenge set by Arts Council England, the Partnership was set up to improve educational, cultural and social outcomes for children and young people through strengthening interaction between cultural organisations (including libraries, arts and heritage) and schools, in places where it is most needed.

As well as providing engineering design consultancy, we also deliver regular STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) activities in local schools and community settings. Last October, we launched our Social Fuse platform to showcase organisations that have STEM expertise and knowledge, and act as a matchmaker between the public, private and third sector to develop joint projects that will engage young people and the general public with STEM.

The initiative reflects a drive over recent years by the education sector, to integrate career-related learning into education in order to address a shortfall in young people with STEM qualifications entering the workforce in manufacturing, engineering and technology-based industries.

We also believe that creativity in education is as essential as STEM, Maths and English, and that its importance has been ignored for too long. Being creative and developing creative skills supports mental well-being and resilience during childhood, adolescence and later life and this should be nurtured. At the start of lockdown we released our Chesterfield Pride - St. Helena artwork, a giant canvas of the St. Helena campus (home of the University's College of Health and Social Care), made with the help of the students, teachers and staff of St. Helena, and the festival-goers of Chesterfield Pride 2019. Prints of the canvas are available from our online shop, with the proceeds of sales being donated to #ProtectYourNHS - the charity of Chesterfield Royal Hospital. During Lockdown, we have been working in partnership with Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership to deliver workshops and activities.

Page 24

Through this partnership, we have run the Fusion Music project – an ensemble of musicians, singers and BSL sign-singers from across Chesterfield and surrounding areas coming together to create a virtual lockdown music group; and we are working in collaboration with the Don Catchment Rivers Trust on their Hidden Heritage Secret Streams project – rediscovering the nature and heritage of the River Rother. Our new project is A Climate of Change, which runs until March 2021. We’re inviting the young people of Chesterfield to send in their artwork (poetry, drawings, photography, and music) that captures their experience of Lockdown. It’s a chance for them to express how the social, cultural and environmental changes seen over the past year have affected them. The artwork from this project will be exhibited at our Cultural Lockdown exhibition in 2021, alongside other works produced by the Chesterfield Cultural Education Partnership. I’m proud that my small firm has one of the best reputations in the equity release market, so its most important to me personally, that we only bring in new advisers that share my ethics and commitment to high service standards”. Such is the reputation of Laterlivingnow that the company has been nominated by dozens of solicitors, accountants, clients and even other financial advisers for the Equity Release Awards 2020. Simon is keen to push the boundaries of knowledge, both for him and his colleagues. They’ve successfully completed training as 'Dementia Friends', 'Friends against Scams', and in handling 'Vulnerable’ clients. Simon and Chris hold a qualification in 'Long-Term Care Fees Planning,' with Amanda aiming to emulate this success. Laterlivingnow is a member of the Equity Release Council and Simon now serves on the Advisory Board to The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA). Many people are looking to help and support their families as they struggle with the financial consequences of the pandemic, with record low interest rates fixed for life (from just 2.28% at the time of writing) often attracting them to a Lifetime Mortgage. Laterlivingnow have noticed an increase in enquiries from people seeking to move to a more rural setting, or enjoying the trend for ‘staycation’ holidays. The popular Lifetime Mortgage can be taken on a property that you wish to buy, not only on one in which you already own and live. Simon explained, “Recently, we have helped clients buy holiday lodges, motorhomes, or relocate to Scotland, for example. Many people are seeking a quieter life, following the Covid-19 outbreak.” Laterlivingnow has also found more people taking advantage of the flexible ‘income’ that a ‘drawdown’ type of Lifetime Mortgages offers. Many plans allow you to take a modest initial sum from, typically, £10,000 then to withdraw smaller sums from as little as £2,000 a time. “This can provide a lifeline to someone who has been made redundant, or has a struggling business,” Simon explained. Laterlivingnow’s strength is its independence from the big firms that advertise on TV, as they advise on the whole of the market for Equity Release, not just one or two lenders. Get to Know Nature Better Words: Holly Booker Image: Holly Booker & Adobe Stock

uring lockdown, many of us spent more time in nature than we would usually have done. In our back gardens, local parks and woods we were able to discover things we hadn’t noticed before. As I looked for places to walk from my house for my daily exercise, I consulted the Ordnance Survey map. I found a whole network of footpaths and bridleways around Brampton and Linacre, so I set about exploring and making the most of the weather. On my walks I found out that pied flycatchers make their home in Linacre Woods, I smelled the bluebells, felt the warm sun on my face, heard the breeze blowing through the treetops and even helped myself to raspberries later on in the summer. All of my senses were alive with nature! I am a person who is naturally drawn to nature; I always have been. I feel a strong connection with it and find comfort in it whenever I am feeling down. For the last fifteen years, I have worked for nature conservation charities, such as the RSPB, the National Trust and the Woodland Trust and my focus has been on getting people out into nature, by hosting special events and working on marketing and promotion to attract visitors to nature reserves. I have now turned my focus to helping people to get to know nature and how beneficial it is for their health and wellbeing, by running guided walks that feature nature, discovery along with elements of forest bathing and mindfulness.

There is growing concern that many people have lost their connection to nature – even children are becoming increasingly disconnected and it is not good for people, and even worse for the planet. David Attenborough was once asked “When did you find your love for nature?” and he answered simply, “When did you lose yours?” We all have an innate connection to other living things in the world around us - think of a child’s fascination with a ladybird, or how the sound of birdsong or a flowing river is soothing, or how plants make a room feel better - but we get so wrapped up in the world we have created for ourselves that our connection to the very ecosystem that keeps us alive slips away.

As we lose our connection with the natural world around us, our own health and wellbeing can suffer. Levels of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues seem to be forever on the rise and there are a multitude of reasons for this. However, I firmly believe that there is something we can all do to help improve our own wellbeing, and ultimately the wellbeing of our planet, and the first step is to take notice of nature. There is mounting evidence being gathered by several universities in the UK that experiencing nature in certain ways helps us to deepen our understanding and appreciation of it. By actively putting our attention into experiencing nature in these ways, we can connect on different levels, and ultimately, discover more about both nature and ourselves. I will be running two walks this November on Sunday 15th and Sunday 29th. These first two walks will be free and I will be gathering feedback from those who take part. GSM Electrical Supplies A community focussed family business Words: Simon Paterson Images: GSM Electrical Supplies

A

fter 25 year’s working for a national electrical supply company, Local family man John Millward decided to start his own. He had always had dreams of being his own boss and in 2012 that dream came true. Like most local, independent ventures, GSM Electrical Supplies had a modest start. With a small budget and a big dream, John found some shared office space in Sheepbridge and the next day GSM Electrical Supplies was born. It didn’t take long for John’s hard work, diligence and experience to pay off. In 2013 he was able to expand operations and opened his very own store in Holmewood, creating several jobs in the local area. But John didn’t stop there… Fast forward to the present day and GSM Electrical Supplies have just expanded operations (again) and have a shiny new store on Whitting Valley Road, creating even more jobs and further strengthening our local community. Even more impressive than GSM’s rapid growth is their current list of customers including Sainsbury’s, Tesco and the NHS. Fantastic! John’s not only created jobs for the people of Chesterfield, but for his daughter Lucy as well. Lucy started working for her dad about three years ago whilst studying speech therapy at Sheffield University. She needed a part-time job whilst attending uni and her good old dad stepped in and filled the gap. Lucy quickly learnt the family business and fell in love with it. She now leads on digital media and marketing, has recently completed a course at the Digital Marketing Institute and has some big plans for the future of GSM Electrical Supplies. We asked Lucy what it likes having her dad as a boss and what she loves about working for GSM? “I never realised just how hard my dad worked until I started here. My respect and admiration for him, for all he’s achieved is immeasurable. Plus, It’s brought us a lot a closer and I get to Page 30

see my dad everyday which is great! The best thing about leading on the media and advertising side of things is meeting new people and supporting our communities. We recently sponsored a ‘Wish upon a star’ event and have just started sponsoring the Chesterfield Town FC under 10’s football team which my son plays for. We plan to do more community initiatives soon, it’s always good to give a little back”. “Being a creative person I enjoy creating content for our social media pages. At first it was a tough nut to crack, trying to make engaging posts about light bulbs and electrical cables haha, but I feel I’ve cracked it now”. GSM Electrical Supplies have a range of products in store including bulbs, lamps, cables, switches, sockets and junction boxes. You name it, they sell it! GSM provided an essential front-line service during the lockdown phase of the pandemic supplying not only some the UK’s largest supermarkets, but the NHS as well. Shipping electrical products up and down the country at a moments notice to pop-up hospitals,

ensuring the supply met the demand. So what’s next on the horizon for GSM Electrical Supplies? We asked the man with the plan, John. “At the moment our priority is to get our new Whitting Valley Road branch up and running, and busy! For the long term, we’re hoping to open another branch in a different town. Personally, I’d like to get more golf in, all work and no play is ruining my short game!” Whether you are an electrician by trade or looking to make some home improvements, John, Lucy and the team are on hand to help. From Bulbs to sockets, cables to switches. GSM Electrical Supplies have got you covered. Well Dressed

Celebrating Hercule Poirot & St Leonard Words: Paul Chapman Images: John Botham & Margaret Hersee

E

ach year, wells across the county are dressed up for a few weeks over the bank holiday weekend. This year we had the well dressing teams from Holymoorside and Spital Cemetery get in touch to let us know what they'd been up to. WIKI: Well dressing, also known as well flowering, is a tradition practised in some parts of rural England in which wells, springs and other water sources are decorated with designs created from flower petals. The custom is most closely associated with the Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire. James Murray Mackinlay, writing in 1893, noted that the tradition was not observed in Scotland; W. S. Cordner, in 1946, similarly noted its absence in Ireland. Both Scotland and Ireland do have a long history of the veneration of wells, however, dating from at least the 6th century. The custom of well dressing in its present form probably began in the late 18th century, and evolved from "the more widespread, but less picturesque" decoration of wells with ribbons and simple floral garlands.

Holymoorside: John Botham John Botham has been in touch to let us know that this year they celebrated 100 years of Hercule Poirot! Agatha Christie's first novel, 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles', was first published in 1920. The scene is Poirot and Hastings searching the bedroom - see if you can find all ten clues! (The snails are not clues, they're a Holymoorside tradition!) In the frame, we illustrated four Hercule Poirot novels for visitors to identify. This year we just completed one well dressing, in order to allow us to socially distance. Unfortunately, we decided Page 32

we could not do the children's or teen's well. This smaller frame separates into five pieces, so we were able to spread out. It also helps that we always work outdoors anyway, which is safer. We put up gazebos, but the weather was not kind! It still took longer to complete because of the limited numbers.

The Holymoorside well dressing is always up for two weeks, starting the Friday before August Bank Holiday, so 2021 it will be 27 August to 12 September.

Spital Cemetery: Margaret Hersee As many well dressings have been cancelled this year, we had wondered if we would be able to go ahead. We had planned to do St Leonard for a number of years as this year was the 125th anniversary of the opening of St Leonard's Mission and John Gascoyne had put in a request that we 'do' him at some point.

St Leonard was a Norman abbot in France and England who died in AD559. Always depicted holding a length of chain, he was known for his work with prisoners and for his healing. As in many areas, the local leper hospital from the 12th century was named after him. When the new mission chapel opened on Valley Road in Spital 125 years ago, that too was dedicated to him. The dressing was sited next to where the remains of a leper priest, discovered in a garden opposite in 2000, are buried. Thanks to: Catherine, Helen, Kate, Lyn, Margaret and Sally for publicity and decorative work. Thanks also to Martyn, Liz, Stuart and Alan for help with transport to and from the site in the Cemetery. The additional image shows a salmon in mosaic format which was on display by Don Catchment Rivers Trust at Tapton Lock Visitors Centre.

How to benefit from investing immediately

L

et’s face it, 2020 hasn’t really gone to plan, has it? From enduring a global pandemic, to juggling our days around remote working (and home schooling for many!), our lives and our finances have been turned upside down.

for less money. Short sellers bet on, and profit from, a drop in a security's price. Short selling has a high risk/reward ratio: it can offer profits, but losses can mount quickly and infinitely.

As such, it might surprise you to know that you may be able to benefit from investing, even during these challenging times. Yes, you read that right. There is money to be potentially made in bad markets as well, and here at Jones & Co, that’s exactly what we aim to deliver for each of our investment clients.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused about where to turn with your finances, please get in touch. Our team of independent financial advice experts can take a look at your investment paperwork you’ve stashed in a drawer and help you make sense of your finances. So, call or email us to arrange your free, no obligation consultation and start benefiting from your investments immediately.

If you have an investment or investment portfolio, I can totally understand why you may have avoided looking at any recent paperwork relating to its performance! Values have been stripped since February this year and some investments are still suffering now, so that paperwork probably won’t make positive reading.

How do we do this? As financial advisors, we start by analysing your situation so that we can implement a clear strategy for you. That strategy will include certain tactics, not just diversification, and appropriate recommendations to invest in a variety of investment funds. Investment funds are, in turn, controlled by fund managers – the people who implement a fund’s investing strategy and manage its portfolio trading activities – who deploy both straightforward and complex investment strategies in relation to various market conditions. The desired outcome for both a financial advisor and a fund manager is, of course, the delivery of positive investment returns irrespective of whether the markets are falling or rising.

By utilising a variety of tactics, in essence, your investment seeks positive returns for your investment portfolio through bad markets not just good ones – we don’t stop when the world turns upside down. That’s why now is a good time to review your existing investment or give serious consideration to a new investment, even in what some might consider a volatile or uncertain market.

Mark Jones Dip PFS MCISI, is managing director of Jones & Co

There are lots of different methods used within specific investment strategies. Hedging is one method that is commonly employed. Hedging against investment risk means strategically using financial instruments or market strategies to offset the risk of any adverse price movements. Put another way, investors hedge one investment by making a trade in another.

Short selling is another method and occurs when an investor borrows a security and sells it on the open market with the view to buying it back later Risk warnings: Investments go up or down in value and on encashment you could potentially get back less than originally invested. The contents of this article are for information only and do not constitute financial advice. Always seek professional guidance when investing in risk-based investments.

e keep being told about the challenging time our young people are going to have finding jobs - made more difficult when the traditional routes for obtaining information getting at careers fairs is no longer possible due to restrictions. 'My Future' is an innovative online careers and employability platform, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, and is helping employers reach prospective apprentices and future employees in a virtual, online careers fair.

Page 36

www.s41local.com

It is completely free for young people to use and enables easy access to up to 100 businesses, education and training providers, across ten zones in a virtual careers fair setting. ‘My Future’ provides information about the business and allows apprentice positions to be advertised. Developed by local business Oasis Studios, in response to a tender from a partnership of Chesterfield Borough Council, Destination Chesterfield and the D2N2 North Derbyshire Careers Hub, the platform uses 360expo software.

With present COVID restrictions, faceto-face careers fairs are not able to take place, resulting in young people not being able to easily access information about future apprenticeship positions.

‘My Future’ is designed to provide support for young people, and the platform aims to give local young people access to the widest range of high-quality careers advice, employment support, skills and educational programmes.

I recently attended a virtual breakfast event by Destination Chesterfield that introduced the platform to the local business community. Ahead of its launch, careers leaders in the D2N2 North Derbyshire Careers Hub, who works with schools and colleges within Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, had already reached out to all Year 11 and Year 13 school leavers, encouraging them to access the ‘My Future’ platform. On GCSE results day, more than 150 young people logged on to the platform and spent on average 207 minutes exploring the virtual careers fair. Oasis Studio Associate, Charlie Power explains, “The My Future platform is a pioneer in the world of exhibitions, and is a significant step as we adjust to a new way of life. “As much as our 360expo software allows exhibitions to go ahead whilst social distancing restrictions are still in place, we believe the platform can assist exhibitions in the future once we can attend again.”

James Brand is a D2N2 LEP board member and Managing Director of Chesterfield-based, United Cast Bar, which is featured in the engineering and manufacturing zone on the platform. “’My Future’ is a fantastic platform which we were delighted to get involved with. It’s a great opportunity for businesses to reach out to young people during these challenging times. The platform will offer real support and guidance to school leavers who have been unable to access the careers information they would normally have had, and helps them make informed decisions about their future,” said James. Dom Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager, explained, “Everyone has worked tremendously hard to get the platform up and running. We have been overwhelmed by the support and involvement of businesses and training providers to make ‘My Future’ happen and support local school leavers during this challenging time”. If you are a young person wanting to seek out the learning about the many opportunities available to you, please visit www.myfuture.org.uk. If you are a local business who would like to be featured on the My Future platform, please contact Emily Williams (email: Emily.williams@chesterfield.gov.uk).

Episode 2: Patawawa & Aaron's 'Exennials' Words: Aaron Brown

huge welcome to Episode Two of S40time. It's great to see that after our first episode was posted (online) and printed, our audience numbers increased. With the arts and entertainment industries hit hard financially and emotionally this year, my aim, is to shine a spotlight on our local talent, giving the industry a welcome boost during this uncertain time.

For those who tuned in to the first episode "proper" with Chesterfield film-maker Kai Undrell, you’ll be aware of what an astute, articulate and engaging young man he is; much wiser than his tender 19 years would suggest and one would expect a bright and illustrious career ahead of him. If you didn’t catch it, see our S40time channel on Youtube, where Kai and myself discussed his short film, “Stand Up” (see Amazon), as well as his upcoming documentary on the “British Invasion” of bands to the US in the 60’s, with a focus on local hit-maker Dave Berry. Kai also waxes lyrical about his love of Chesterfield, and his journey as a film-maker starting out at the Royal Shakespeare Youth Theatre, studying the Film and Media course at Chesterfield College, and filming “Stand Up” at Chesterfield’s Avenue venue. It was also Kai who shot rising stars Clear Vinyl’s electric performance at The Leadmill in Sheffield last November, capturing the emotionally charged evening to perfection, and he also speaks passionately about his work with the Melodic Caring Project.

Episode 2; I sit down with Sam Wilmot - singer with Matlock band Patawawa (pictured), who have wowed Festival audiences far and wide in the UK since playing their first ever gig at The Sun Inn in Chesterfield five years ago. At the start of the year, demand was such in Japan that fans funded the flights for the band, enabling them to achieve the dream of a lifetime; and their tune “Patagonia” was even chosen by “Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown to launch her new makeup range. With 6Music and Radio One sessions under their belts earlier this year, and a new album due, 2020 was expected to propel the band into orbit. With a Main Stage slot at the YNot and Tramlines Festivals cancelled for a second time, though, Sam still remains upbeat and excited about the band's prospects, whilst a virtual YNot Festival streamed late July went some way to making up for the lack of a festival scene this year. Page 38

s40time s40 time

I'm excited to say that the S40time team is joined by producer Robert Brooks, and cameraman Tim Fawkes whose usual job is to operate cameras and lighting in arena gigs for the likes of The Prodigy! They’re coming onboard today and their expertise will enable us to not only livestream our podcasts, but possibly whole gigs. We will be recording an episode with one of the area’s best known local musicians - Damon Downs - axeman supremo with Towards The Sun, and tracing his journey from rocking the areas best known venues to crowds as far as Australia and Israel.

On a personal note, I’ve not been able to gig since March, so as well as ploughing myself into the podcast, I’ve been recording my own solo album over the summer with producer and artist Danny Burton. With a working title of “The Exennials”, I’m observing from the perspective of my unique generation which has seen the “before and after” of the internet age, and I’m incredibly happy with the results. With the ethereal sheen of The Verve omnipresent throughout the album, I can’t wait for you all to hear the results in a month or two.

In the meantime, please search for S40time on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and subscribe, engage and make suggestions as much as possible. It’ll really help me make more content and celebrate the rich diversity of talent that the town and county have to offer.

Garden Tips

November Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Pictures: Robert Nixon Betts

f you have been organised enough to order barerooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.

Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.

Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost.

Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.

If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more. Page 42

Chesterfield Football Club The friendlies Words & images: Michael South “It’s just nice to get on the pitch and get playing again. I think they did alright, seeing that they’ve not been together for six months” John Pemberton after the Belper Town friendly. Since my last page, boss John Pemberton has signed a 12 month contract with the club so he is officially our manager now, which I like. He's also retained his players for this seasons campaign. Cropper, Hollis, Smith, Denton, Rawson, Sharman, Hutchinson and my personal favourite, Nathan Tyson have all signed. Since the friendlies it's quite obvious following the Trusts takeover of our club that money is tight, especially as fans at the time of writing are restricted from attending the games which is crippling some clubs. On the field, we must concentrate on building new foundations with limited resources. In my opinion, this will take time as the team needs time to gel and to improve from this month’s poor results. So, how did we do in the friendlies?

Chesterfield kicked off their return to live football after a 6 month break! The first was away to Belper Town which ended with a 3-2 victory. A limited number of fans witnessed new signing Milan Butterfield's first CFC goal on his debut for the club – CFCs first competitive goal since March 2020. Jonathan Smith also scored twice making it 3 for the Spireites. The next match should have been Matlock Town FC away at Causeway Lane, but due to a backroom staff member testing positive for Covid-19, it was called off.

Luckily the 3rd scheduled friendly went ahead, but without Pemberton being present. Assistant manager John Dungworth took charge for a second away game at Alfreton Town. This tie was held behind closed doors and we lost 2-0, so we'll gloss over this result and move on.

The next and final friendly came against Guiseley on 26th September, just 7 days before the start of the National League. This also ended without a win, 0-1 to the visitors. Our new goalkeeper Kyle Letheren was missing from the game due to being suspected of having Covid, so youngster Dylan Wharton stepped up for his first 90 mins as the Spireites' keeper. This, as the boss told the media after the game, may become a repetitive issue for us.

“This is going to be the problem through the season because we’re coming into an environment now where people are going to get common colds but we have to be tested because we have to make sure it’s not Covid. It’s a nightmare.” So there we have it, room for improvement!

See you next month for a review of the first of the league games. Until then, stay safe Spireites. COYB's!
