Intro

Hello and welcome to the December edition of S41 Local Magazine and the last one of 2020!

Many of you will be looking at Santa on our front cover and trying to place his face, so we will put you out of your misery. Our festive front cover designed by the hugely talented Mike Sklavenitis of Zero Tattoo Gallery, pays homage to the late and great actor, Sir John Hurt. Sir John was born in Chesterfield in 1940 and is best known for his portrayal of John Merrick in the Elephant Man. Sir John grew up in Shirebrook where his father was the local Anglican Minister, before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1962. Sir John's acting ability lead to him playing complex characters with the dignity and accuracy required of the role. We love Mike's Sir John Hurt Santa and feel it captures his on screen presence and charisma perfectly.

In our final edition of 2020 we meet Chesterfield's record breaking gold and diamond miner, read all about one families trip to Lapland in 2019, reminding us of the spirit of Christmas and how wonderful life was before 2020, and will be in 2021!

We have a fantastic giveaway by new, independent business Lumberjack Games, with two board game packages up for grabs, ideal for those winter nights at home and a fabulous Christmas Pudding tree decoration from Adorn Jewellers. We get you up to speed on the latest developments at Chesterfield Football Club and learn more about our front cover artist, Mike and his newest venture Zero Tattoo Gallery.

We want to thank from the bottom of our hearts every single reader and local business in 2020 that has supported our humble publication. We weren't sure if we would make it to 2021 but boy are we glad we did! Thank you, thank you, thank you! All that's left to say, is have very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Peace, love and positivity

Chesterfield puts the magic back into Christmas Chesterfield Borough Council has launched the Christmas in Chesterfield Campaign with some brand-new Christmas experiences.

T

he council, in partnership with Destination Chesterfield, has created the magical story of the Chesterfield Elves and how they saved Christmas. The story is told through a series of Christmas experiences around Chesterfield Town Centre. The Chesterfield Elves wanted to put the fun back into Christmas after a difficult year. The elves travelled to the North Pole over the summer and brought back some magic technology, which will bring Santa to Chesterfield in a unique and Covidsafe way, as well as a few other Christmas treats for everyone to enjoy.

The elves have set up The Amazing Magical Santa House with magical technology, known as the ‘Santa Zoomer’ – a video link to chat with Santa!

The Amazing Magical Chesterfield Santa House in the Town Centre will open its doors on Saturday 5 December. As well as the chat with Santa via the video link to the North Pole, visitors can pose for an Augmented Reality experience in which Santa will magically appear. The resulting video is sent directly to the mobile phone of visitors at the end of the experience. Also launching is The Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game (Elf Trail), a fun trail around the Town Centre.

The Chesterfield Elves are letting everyone know where they live by giving a few clues to their locations. When an Elf is found, residents can scan the ‘QR Elf Code’ and gain access to a short story about the elf, as well as gift guides to Chesterfield’s fantastic range of independent shops, plus some special offers.

The full story of The Chesterfield Elves Save Christmas, can be downloaded and is the perfect bedtime story for families.

Cllr Kate Sarvent said: “While this year, there won’t be the usual large-scale events in Chesterfield Town Centre, we have created these very special and unique experiences to make Christmas in Chesterfield as fun and magical as it always is. Page 6

“It's been a tough year for many of us, and the Santa House and Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game, will bring plenty of fun and show that Chesterfield can still celebrate Christmas.

“Public safety remains our priority and the Santa House experience has been designed to be Covidsafe. But can I ask everyone to play their part by wearing a face covering, social distance and follow the latest guidance, by doing these few things, we will all have an enjoyable and healthy Christmas.” Residents and visitors to Chesterfield will also be welcomed and wowed by our improved Christmas lighting, across the town centre, including redressed tree lights and snow fall light features.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield said “In these challenging times it's never been more important to support each other. I am delighted that Destination Chesterfield and Chesterfield Borough Council have continued this year to work collaboratively on the Christmas in Chesterfield Campaign. Combining our efforts reinforces the Support Local message. Making the decision to choose an independent retailer for your gifts and food both now and beyond the pandemic will make a huge difference to our high street.” Visits to the Amazing Magical Chesterfield Santa House must be pre-booked via: www.chesterfield.gov.uk/christmas www.chesterfield.co.uk/christmas The Santa House opens on Saturday 5 December and each Saturday and Sunday until 20 December. There is no charge to visit but spaces are limited, watch out for extra dates bring announced. The Christmas lights are on and The Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game launches on 7 December.

Full details on everything happening this Christmas, including gift guides and shopping offers for our many unique and independent shops can be found at the web sites above.

Cover Art

Mike Sklavenitis Meet this month's cover artist Words: Simon Paterson Image: Mike Mithos

M

ike Sklavenitis, lead artist and coowner of Zero Tattoo Gallery, is this month’s front cover artist. Born and raised on a beautiful Greek island Mike now lives in Chesterfield. We caught up with him to find out about his inspiration, what he likes about living in Chesterfield and his wonderful creation of John Hurt as Santa! Mike has been an artist for as long as he can be remember, creating pieces for his family since he was a toddler and winning competitions as a student. As a teenager, he became competent with a spray can and developed into quite the graffiti artist. We asked him about his early influences.

"Ino is a famous mural artist, undertaking commissions all over the world, he started out as a graffiti artist many years ago when it had a bad name and was arrested several times. Now street art is everywhere, and Ino is a well-respected artist. His art really communicates with his audience and has a strong message," says Mike. "I like so many famous, historical fine artists, but one who stands out to me is El Greco, a Greek painter from the 16th century. His use of colour is very dramatic which has influenced my way of working.” Like many people, Mike had his first tattoo as a teenager, but with a difference - he did it on himself! "I still have my first tattoo, it’s bad! I had already made up my mind that I was going to be a tattoo artist, so I wanted to see how much it hurt, it hurts haha! I have kept it as it is my first one, but I am sure I will get it covered at some point."

Growing up on a small, less affluent island in Greece, Mike knew that earning a living as a tattoo artist was going to be tough. "I have always done fine art and even won a few competitions back in Greece as a young man. Making money as a fine or tattoo, artist where I lived was unlikely, so I studied graphic design at college and then university. Page 8

"I worked as a graphic designer for a good few years whilst tattooing on the side with friends and family etc… slowly, through word of mouth, momentum grew and I was able to quit my graphic design job and become a full time tattoo artist." Mike’s ambition and talent as a tattoo artist took him to London where he lived and worked, honing his skills, learning from some of the best in the business, before moving to Chesterfield, which he now calls home.

"I love living in Chesterfield, it has the best of both worlds. I am never far away from the hustle and bustle of many of England’s greatest cities, yet I love living the quiet life in Chesterfield and enjoying the Peak District. I am very happy here." Over at S41 Local, Simon set Mike the challenge of designing their Christmas front cover, asking him to combine two things: something ‘Chesterfieldy’ and ‘Christmassy’.

"I did a lot of research on the history of Chesterfield, famous landmarks and people. My research led me to world famous actor John Hurt, who sadly died in 2017. As a tribute to the late Chesterfield-born actor, I made him into Santa. I hope your readers like it. It was fun to create." I am sure you’ll agree Mike’s John Hurt Santa is a fantastic piece of work, and we wish Mike and all the team at Zero Tattoo Gallery a very Merry Christmas. ostas and Mike have been close friends for many years, in fact Mike helped Kostas set up the fabulously authentic Odyssey Greek Restaurant in town. Their shared passion for the finer things in life such as food and art has led to them opening a second venture, Zero Tattoo Gallery. Walking past Zero Tattoo Gallery, on the outside of the market hall, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a fine art gallery. In fact, this is exactly the look they are going for. “Traditional tattoo studios have been a little on the dark side, we wanted to offer something different and classy. At Zero we want people from all walks of life to come in, feel ‘wowed’ and yet at home,” says Kostas Kostas and Mike have always had a passion for art, and it shows in the décor. Entering the gallery is a veritable feast for the eyes. The walls are adorned with art created by both local, and international artists and many of the furnishings have been made to order by local crafts people such as Elphius Flux on Crow Lane.

Zero Tattoo Gallery is set across two floors with the ground floor currently being developed into an art gallery. The team have big plans and intend to use this space to support aspiring artists and students from Chesterfield College. “Downstairs will be our art gallery. It’s our aim to showcase some of the country’s, and Chesterfield’s top talent. We will display and sell pieces by artists including tattooists, ceramicists, fine artists and sculptors, and we intend to work with Chesterfield College to put on regular exhibitions of their student’s work. It’s important to us to do our bit to help Chesterfield’s budding artists and give them a stage to showcase some of the amazing work they do,” says Mike. Zero Tattoo Gallery offer a unique, 360 experience from consultation to tattoo and aftercare, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Whether it’s your first or 30th tattoo, the team at Zero are on hand with expert advice, guidance and of course, an abundance of talent! So why not pop in for a chat, enjoy the art and make your next tattoo, a Zero tattoo. Oh, and did we mention the coffee is rather good as well?

The team consists of Mike, Kostas and local artist, Meg. Meg is a lifelong Cestrefeldian and has been a professional tattooist since 2018. Meg comes from a realism background and has found a love for traditional and neo traditional styles, using colour and dot-work whilst tattooing

Business Intro

Lumberjack Games A local, online alternative to the web giants for your board games and more.

L

Words: Paul Chapman

umberjack Games is a relatively new business offering a local, independent service from their base in Walton, selling board games online, delivered to your door.

No matter what our best intentions to shop local and support independent retailers it can be quite difficult, so it's exciting to find someone providing a local online alternative and making it easy for us. Lumberjack Games is husband and wife team, Gareth and Katie. The pair are well known locally as members of a local church and Gareth, in a previous role, sat next to me at S40 Local helping with design work.

Lumberjack Games launched in January this year ... and we all know what happened on 23 March 2020 (if you need reminding it was the start of lockdown). Great timing as we all looked for ways to keep ourselves entertained whilst being stuck at home.

'10p from each order goes to Home for Good, a UK based charity committed to finding homes for vulnerable children and families' Gareth Simmonds Gareth is keen to point that "We're not real life Lumberjacks, but the idea of living in a cabin in the woods certainly appeals to us, mostly so we could light a fire and play a good board game without worrying about any phones buzzing or TVs blaring. If you're anything like us, you long to get back to the basics, when life was much simpler, and sleep came much easier.

"Our aim is to make life easy for you. We want it to be easy to find a game to suit everyone, whether you're a hard core

Page 14

www.s41local.com

board game nut, or you're a regular Jack who hasn't played a game in 20 years. Hopefully our website is really easy to find your way around, and really easy to see something you might fancy." To sum the business up perfectly - they're friendly, a kick back at technology - using the tag #GoodOldFamilyFun - spot on.

Gareth and Katie know that not everyone has the privilege of a loving family to spend their evenings and weekends with. Every year over 40,000 children in the UK have to go into care, to put that into perspective, that's one child every 15 minutes. So 10p from each order goes to Home for Good, a UK based charity committed to finding homes for vulnerable children, and supporting families. They also aim to ship responsibly using recyclable or reusable packaging.

Please see the advert below for contact details and think of them for your Christmas shopping. The cut-off for orders to get to you before Christmas is 22 December, and they aim to deliver all local orders the same or next working day. A big thank you to Lumberjack Games for offering two games packs as prizes in the competition on the page opposite, one for children and one for adults.

Experience

Lapland 2019 One local families trip of a lifetime Words & images: John Willacy

W

ith our eldest son Thomas recently progressing to Junior School, my wife and I decided to take him to see Santa in Lapland to experience the magic this country has to offer.

I booked flights to Rovaniemi in Finland with Easyjet, returning with Norwegian Air. Here I made a mistake, confusing Gatwick with the easier to drive to Heathrow meaning a rather long journey down to the airport (typical northerner). We booked to have four full days in Lapland travelling a day either side, staying in an apartment in Rovaniemi City Centre. Although we didn’t go down the usual route of staying in a log cabin in the woods, our apartment was great value for money and even came with its own sauna and Netflix; much to the delight of our son. In preparation for the cold we bought thermals from Chesterfield market, my wife bought some good quality boots from Bakewell and I made do with my trusty Rockports from the 90’s. A friend gave us clothes and boots for Thomas and we were all set.

We gave Thomas a letter from Santa the day before departure inviting him to go visit and meet the Elves in Lapland, this resulted in one very excited little boy. Day 1: We went to the Santa Claus Village on the Santa Express. Here we went on a short huskie sleigh ride through the snowy woods, stopping to meet all of the dogs. We cosied up for a magical reindeer sleigh ride and Thomas enjoyed racing around the children’s snow mobile track making his Mum somewhat nervous as he sped past the other boys and girls. There were lots of shops and places to eat, plus the chance to meet Santa, however you were unable to take personal photos so we decided to wait and see Santa the next day at Santa Park instead which had had some great reviews.

Day 2: We went to the Santa Park, again using the Santa Express. Santa Park is an impressive underground cavern where the magic starts as soon as you arrive. Page 16

www.s41local.com

One of Santa’s Elves met us at the cave entrance, and we went on to meet Santa, take parts in arts and crafts activities and then attend an elf training school where we became qualified elves! There was an excellent stage show, a fun adventure ride, an ice bar with ice sculptures, a tunnel under the Arctic circle plus many other fun attractions.

I took it in turns to drive the dogs and Thomas sat in the sled. In the evening we went Northern Lights hunting, not far away is a frozen river which has limited light pollution to increase your chances of spotting them, we walked down and were joined by a tour also hunting the lights, did we see them, we are not sure, we saw something but who knows?

Day 4: Having experienced the snow mobiles yesterday, we felt the huskie ride at the Santa Village was not the true experience, so again the credit card took a hammering and we booked a three hour huskie driving experience with the same company as the day before. We were led by Rovaniemi’ s oldest musher, (he owned and raced huskies in many competitions throughout the year) leading the way on a snowmobile while Sherie and

Seeing Santa in Lapland was amazing but the final two days made the break unforgettable. Riding the snow mobiles and racing the huskies through the Finnish forests is a memory my family and I will treasure for life.

Day 3: By the third day we were feeling we had not really had the outdoor Lapland experience yet and so we decided to push the boat out, with the help of tourist information centre we booked a snow mobile two hour experience. This was absolutely amazing, Thomas was sat with the instructor and with my wife Sherie and I followed on our own snow mobile, taking it in turns to drive through the forest was thrilling and amazing, we even caught a glimpse of wild reindeer running in the snow.

Top tips to offer from my experiences; firstly fly from Manchester if you want to stay in your wife’s good books! Secondly, I would book a set of activities before you go and don’t be afraid to ask for a discount if using the same company for several different activities. And finally, if you are going it alone like we did rather than going with a package holiday, buy your winter clothes in the UK as it’s far cheaper than hiring clothes in Finland and you can use them over again.

“I pay Libby’s On Chatsworth a visit at Christmas. It’s beautifully decorated and I always find a gift or two for the family. I’ll be sure to pop next door to Koo for a homemade Viennese mince pie and mulled wine as well, it would be rude not to.”

Meet Steve Maloney: Chesterfield’s record-breaking gold and diamond miner. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Steve Maloney

T

he accolade of ‘local legend’ is probably used more than it should be, but not in Steve’s case! From gold and diamond mining, to setting world records, Steve Maloney from Newbold has done it all. For as long as he can remember, Steve's been digging holes. Now with over 40 years’ experience, Steve is the go-to guy for training, advice, guidance and equipment hire with his new business Steves Diggers! Following in his father’s footsteps, Steve decided from a young age that he was going to be an excavator operator, a decision that has taken him all over the world. “Stick a pin in a world map and I’ve probably been there,” Steve says. Steve’s mining career started back in 1979, open cast mining in Staveley as a teenager.

Page 20

"I’d see all the experienced staff operating the big machinery and every day I’d pester the line manager asking him to let me have a go and he’d say, ‘Steve you’re too young’".

Eventually, Steve was offered the opportunity to work on one of the ‘big ones’ on a job in Stoke. Steve’s passion for machinery and hard graft quickly saw him reach the top of his profession. A German company visiting the UK sites to see some of their equipment in action was so impressed with the skill and speed at which Steve operated, they approached Steve’s boss and asked if they could borrow him. This led to Steve being flown all over the world to demonstrate some of the world’s leading excavation technology and, later, achieving a WORLD RECORD!

www.s41local.com

In 1997 Steve was flown out to Canada to test and operate a prototype hydraulic face shovel.

"On the 25 December 1997, starting at 7am and finishing at 7pm, I moved over 10,000 tonnes per hour of material. This was classified as a world first and the record still stands to this day. It was tough but the adrenaline kept me going and I could hear people over the two-way radio saying, ‘Keep going Steve, this is incredible!’ I’ll never forget that day." Steve has mined almost every conceivable material; gold, diamonds, uranium and platinum.

"My experience of Diamond mining was amazing. I was in Lac de Gras, a diamond mine in Diavik (Canada), it’s surrounded by water, so you fly in and fly out, like in the movies. In the wintertime it’s so cold the sea freezes over and you drive across, going across in the pick-up truck is a sight to behold, it’s strikingly blue and clear. Every truck I loaded had over £800,000 of diamonds in it! Unfortunately, I haven’t stashed any for retirement!"

and has recently launched his own business in Chesterfield, the aptly named Steves Diggers. Steve made the decision to start his own equipment hire business after being stuck in Mali, Africa, for four months during the first lockdown, and is really enjoying tutoring his customers, who include builders, landscapers and DIYers. When hiring excavation equipment from Steve’s Diggers not only do you get the best machinery, but the best advice and guidance in the world.

We know who we will be coming to when it’s time to look for gold in the garden, digging holes for decking or patios, or clearing the way for that dream extension or conservatory.

The demand for Steve’s experience has seen him travelling all over the world and for five years in a row, he only spent 27 days at home in Chesterfield. He is a consultant and trainer for HMS Dortmund in Germany and Caterpillar,

Many of you will recognise the name Gareth Richards as the man behind the long established and well-respected GR Glazing. In fact, a lot of you will have had new windows, doors or a conservatory fitted by Gareth and his team. Gareth’s passion for transforming properties into stylish homes has led him to his latest venture, GRend. Established in 2020, GRend are quickly becoming the go-to company for property rendering in Chesterfield and the surrounding area. Gareth set about hiring the very best renderers in Derbyshire and it shows in the quality of work and finish. What is rendering and is it right for me? House rendering is a form of cladding applied to the outside of a home, in the same was as plaster is applied to interior walls. Rendering comes in a variety of colours and materials and Gareth and the team are on hand with expert advice to ensure you choose the right one for you, and your home.

g rend

There are two main reasons to have your home rendered: Appearance Rendering the exterior of a home will brighten up the property and give it a new lease of life. It can hide tired old brickwork and a join where a new extension meets the existing property. Render comes in a variety of colours and finishes and can be tailored for both traditional and contemporary styles of houses, with options to suit most budgets. Protection and insulation Rendering the outside of a house protects the brickwork from the elements, which over time can look tired, worn and stop providing the insulation it once did. In addition to cavity wall insulation there are several types of render that provide that extra bit of warmth during the winter months, helping reduce fuel bills, saving you money. So whether you are looking to give your home a makeover and/ or insulate your house, Gareth and the team at GRend are on hand to help. Cocina Familiar A taste of Mexico in Chesterfield Words: Simon Paterson Image: Jennie Sim Former S41 Local Magazine contributor Jennie Sim, has opened her own family restaurant in their home village of Wingerworth and it's going down a storm.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the friends and family night back in October and got to sample some of Jennie's fantastic home made Mexican recipes. Jennie has always had a passion for cooking and it shows in her delicious dishes. Over the space of an hour Jennie treated to us several of her fabulous recipes, my favourite being the Mexican inspired mac and cheese. It wasn't until I had cleaned my plate that Jennie told me it was vegan! Who would have thought that vegan cheese would taste so good? Translated into English 'Cocina Familar' means family kitchen and this is precisely what it is. Front

of house and clearly loving helping their mum out are Ryder and Bobbie-Eve, welcoming customers with a big smile and showing them to their seats. Jack of all trades and mainly just doing as he is told is Jennie's husband, Mark.

With Jennie's talent in the kitchen and support from the family I can't see this scrumptious venture being anything but a huge success. Did I mention they do a mean breakfast Burrito as well? Cocina Familiar 2 Edinburgh Court Wingerworth Chesterfield S42 6SH

Pensions: the ultimate savings incentive

O

K. I admit it. Pensions definitely aren’t the most interesting topic of conversation for the majority (apart from us independent financial advisors, that is!).

Just the mention of the ‘p’ word and people have the tendency to switch off or change the subject. That’s usually because the discussion becomes technical, long-winded and ultimately, boring. There are plenty more inspiring and motivating things to talk about, I get that. However, what if I told you that if you take out a pension and contribute to that pension, the Government will contribute too? Yes, you read that right. The Government, or more precisely, HMRC, will pay into your pension every time you do. Time for the maths bit. Stay with me! Tax relief on pension contributions is often described as '20% tax relief'. If, for instance, someone earns £100 through an employer, and decides to have it paid into their pension and not into their bank account, the 20% they would have been taxed no longer applies, and the full £100 is paid into their pension. However, if you’re a basic rate taxpayer and you're making the contribution (rather than it being paid via your employer), an £80 contribution will instead be topped up by HMRC to £100. So, an £80 contribution is in actual fact increased by 25% when paid into a pension. And that's before the money's even invested see, the ultimate savings incentive!

Now ask yourself another question: what would be an adequate amount of money to live on when I retire? Chances are you’ll have no clue what that figure is. That’s where we come in. By discussing your expectations, putting together a forecast based on how much you can contribute, we will put you in an informed position. We'll provide you with a lower level figure of what you might expect when you retire, and a higher level figure; both dependent on how your pension is expected to perform. And it's our job to make sure you know how much you could expect to have when you retire. No one can see into the future but, here at Jones & Co, we can certainly help you maximise your money and be financially ready to make the most of your retirement when it arrives. Contributing little and often into a pension is by far the most manageable way to save for your retirement. So, to find out how you can do that with bespoke financial advice, please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of my colleagues for a FREE consultation. Email: kirk@ifajonesandco.uk, call 01246 550521 or simply pop into our offices on Glumangate in Chesterfield. We promise to make pensions exciting!

If you’re a higher rate taxpayer, as well as getting 20% tax relief, you will also be able to claim back up to a further 20% from HMRC, dependent on your earnings. This is technically considered to be '40% tax relief', but in reality it could be an increase on your taxed earnings of as much as 67%! There aren't many places you can get 67% growth in a single day! So, irrespective of your income, paying into a pension is undoubtedly a win-win. If you don’t already have a pension (if you’re employed, your employer should have given you the opportunity to take part in their auto-enrolment pension scheme) or you don’t currently contribute, you should start to. Now. See above. To look at it all another way. The average state pension currently stands at £9,110 per annum*. The average UK salary is £29,009**. When you retire, ask yourself: could I live on £9,110 a year? That’s a drop of £20,000 a year. Could you continue with your present standard of living? I imagine your answer will be a resounding ‘no’.

Community

When something has to be done. Words: Louise Hepplewhite

When this is over, and it will be over, we want to look back at this moment and remember the small acts of kindness done by us and to us… ...how we first thought of others and acted with decency.”

The words of Rishi Sunak on 23 March 2020 when lockdown was announced resonated with Kelly Hall and her daughter Grace, who decided they must do something to support the local community, in particular the elderly, vulnerable, those on furlough or who had lost their jobs and were struggling to put food on the table.

were already delivering food parcels through their taxi service, and Gussie’s Kitchen, who offer food parcels from St Augustine’s church and had been preparing cooked meals for individuals.

Food parcels will be given to anyone who needs one, without judgement or discrimination, be it as a stop gap whilst waiting for benefits or to the elderly or vulnerable who are isolating. As Kelly says, "You will be greeted with a huge smile and enough food to keep you lovely people going. We are in this together and whilst ever we can, we will always support anyone that should ever need us." They very quickly built up the trust of DCC, Morrison's, Voluntary Action, Social Services and Community Mental Health teams who passed on referrals for their food parcels.

The Food Hut is here to stay, they were here throughout the first lockdown and were given their permanent premises in Dunston by Chesterfield Borough Council in July. This promises to be a centre where people of all ages can socialise, garden and meet for organised activities, once the pandemic allows for mixing.

This incredible team of volunteers hasn’t taken a break since March, working tirelessly to feed those in need and also helping those who come into the centre looking for clothes, toiletries and additional support, referring people to other services where necessary. They’ve also put together free lunch boxes to help children during the school holidays. Demand has increased again through the second lockdown. "We recognise the need for this service to continue alongside the other voluntary organisations in and around Chesterfield." Kelly would like to pass on thanks to everyone involved in the project, and in particular to the Chesterfield Labour Party and Cllr Janice Marriott. Kelly posted her vision on the Facebook Covid-19 Chesterfield Support network page and within hours had been offered premises from Natalie Bahlaj, a local business owner who could no longer continue to trade due to lockdown. ‘Without Natalie, the Food Hut would never have got off the ground,’ says Kelly. Then along came Chell Whiteley and they were now ready to set up the Chesterfield Community Food Hut. The determination of a small team of volunteers, putting in the hours working to source donations, and pack and deliver food parcels throughout Chesterfield has allowed them to hand out an estimated 11,000 food parcels to date. Kelly credits the success to the invaluable decision to team up with Door 2 Door Taxis, who unbeknownst to her, Page 34

They are always desperate for donations and, as the Christmas season approaches, have put together the reverse advent calendar opposite which suggests items you may want to collect in the run up to Christmas and to donate to the Food Hut in time for the big day. Music

Episode 3: Damon Downs Words: Aaron Brown

A very warm welcome to Episode 3 of S40time, and I imagine by the time you’re reading this, you’ll be gearing up for your Christmas and Winter Celebrations.

Episode three traces the epic journey of one of the area’s best known, and loved musicians - Damon Downs. You may have been lucky enough to have witnessed his virtuoso axe-wielding skills in local band, Towards The Sun, yet Damon has released an incredible 11 solo albums. With another album set for release early in 2021, S40time bagged another exclusive with a three song acoustic live set recorded at The Olde House, which had the S40time production team awestruck! I’m pleased to announce that you can catch up with this and every episode of S40time (for free) with the launch of our brand new shiny website: www.s40time.com You’ll be able to discover our vision for the local music scene, explore what we’re all about, and have early access to what’s coming next.

I’m currently working with David McPhie (Some Kinda Mushroom), who you may remember from the Pilot Episode (Getting Joe Cocker his record deal), who will now have his very own spin-off series called 'The Man In The Hat - In Conversation with..'. I teamed up with Cosmic Monocle, a very cool graphics and animation company, and put together some super-slick intro music and iconic pictures of Chesterfield, which will hopefully get people really excited for the interviews that David and I shot with some of the town’s best loved characters over the summer.

The first interview of the new series will be with Chesterfield band, Shape of The Rain, who played with Pink Floyd when they visited town in the 60’s, and recounted stories of recording at legendary studios like Rockfield (Oasis, Queen, Stone Roses) in Wales, and London's, Abbey Road. Look out for this episode sometime in December.

On its heels are shows with John Cuttriss, talking about his books on The Carlton Club and Aquarius on Whittington Moor, Jazz Legends, AL Needham and Denny Lawson, Jonathan Rowlands (Bakewell Festival) and folk supremo Hannah James. Page 38

He’s not doing all the work, though! I’ve shot a couple more episodes since I last wrote (again, thanks to The Olde House for allowing us to use their function room).

When he’s not instructing you how to safely throw an actual axe at The Snake Room on Whittington Moor, Nick Barker from Grassmoor has drummed for some of the World’s great metal bands including Testament, Brujeria and most famously starred in the BBC Documentary “Living with the Enemy” with death metal band - Cradle of Filth. Like most musicians, Nick’s had most of his livelihood cancelled for the foreseeable future, and speaks passionately about a fall from grace which saw him rocking crowds of 250k in South America and drum sponsorship deals, to having to sell his equipment just to get by.

Another thing we can certainly look forward to this Christmas, though, is one of the best Christmas songs of recent years, penned by local hitmaker, Danny Burton. 'Merry Christmas, One and All' is the Christmas song that The Beatles and Bowie never wrote together, (with excellent backing vocals from yours truly!) and highlights the plight of those who are without friends, family and creature comforts at this time of year. With all proceeds being donated to breast cancer and homeless charities, I urge you to get behind this really catchy and uplifting festive tune, which you’re sure to be singing all over the festive period. Please help us out by subscribing to S40time on Youtube, and joining in with the banter on all our social media platforms, and have yourselves a delightful Christmas and New Year.

Junction Arts

Keeping the community together during a pandemic

One of Chesterfields leading arts charities Junction Arts are the force behind community arts events, Bolsover Lantern Parade and Tapton Lock Festival, and next year, they celebrate their 45th year co-creating projects with rural and exindustrial communities! Hannah Bowdler, their Relationship Fundraiser, who joined the charity earlier this year, tells us more about the charity and the importance of community arts. The power of the arts Community arts have long been practised to empower individuals and communities to come together for self-expression, to spark community discussions and allow for shared cultural experiences.

The arts have a positive impact on people and the places they live. Projects such as This Girl Codes empowers young women in North East Derbyshire to build confidence and skills, address inequality and inspire change through connection to their heritage using technology. We've worked hard to develop our work online throughout the pandemic. We have adapted to stay engaged and active in our communities to give those isolated the much-needed break from daily worries through exciting creative activities that connect them to others.

November marked the 27th Bolsover Lantern Parade, a well-loved tradition in the town and one of the largest lantern parades in the UK. Years of family-friendly lantern workshops with professional artists has grown a talented community of lantern makers.

This year, not to be beaten by the Pandemic, Bolsover are still celebrating the parade tradition from their homes, by participating in a new Junction Arts project ‘Lighting The Way’. Residents, businesses, schools and care homes created Hope at Home bird lanterns that were lit in their windows on the 28th November. Connect and support those struggling Please help us raise £4,000 this December, as we run our first Christmas Giving Campaign. By donating, you will be sending a lifeline to those who are increasingly isolated and alone this Christmas, linking them to their communities. Please follow the link on our website to make a difference.

If you are looking for some escapism and a creative break, you can get involved with our projects through our website. Please share your creativity with us and get in touch online. www.junctionarts.org junctionArtsuk

Jane, Junction Arts Project Coordinator say, "Now more than ever the arts have a crucial role to play in helping people’s health and wellbeing. Taking part in the arts activities with others is an opportunity to be social, escape reality, be creative, learn new skills, make new friends and feel part of a community."

Garden Tips

December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil.

It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too.

Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’.

If you have a greenhouse or window sill, it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space.

Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent overwintering spots for essential wildlife.

Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. S

o, after the disappointment of the friendlies came further disappointment in the form of the departure of John Pemberton. Just 46 days into the belated 2020/21 season. Where did it all go wrong?

The start of the season was supposed to kick off at newly promoted Wealdstone on the 3rd October, but was postponed at the eleventh hour due to a waterlogged pitch.

The first game for Chesterfield started at home against Hartlepool United. The last time they visited we lost 1-5. This time though they only won 1-2, Denton with the Spireites only goal from the spot. Things got worse when Scott Boden also got sent off for a dangerous tackle on their keeper (see pic). Four days later, Woking came and to be frank, we battered them 4-0! Town had made two new signings since the Hartlepool defeat, Alex Kiwomya, a striker and Tyler Denton a defender but it was home grown lad Luke Rawson who shined. He scored twice within 6 mins 84' and 90' to go joint top CFC scorer with Tom Denton. I was lucky enough to had been sat where Rawson celebrated and you can see the pride on his young face in my photograph. Denton himself nodded in his second of the season just 4 mins after the kick off. Kiwomya claimed the other goal on his returning debut (see pic). Tourquay away was the next fixture which didn't end well either. 2-1 to the home side but at least Tom Denton banged in a goal.

The following game was the FA Cup fourth round qualifying tie. The Spireites travelled to Stockport County and boy was it a game to remember, because we won...yes that's right, we won. Or did we? As it turns out, no we didn't. Despite Butterfields equaliser and his winning penalty in the shoot out, that game had to be replayed due to a CFC administration error relating to loanee Jordan Cropper. This meant the losing theme continued when we replayed the game as we got thrashed 4-0. To add insult to injury (pardon the pun) Tyson got injured again early in the first half and was subbed off.

In-between these FA Cup games the spireites did play a league game away at Yeovil and managed to pick up all 3 points which moved us out of the drop zone with a Tom Denton goal. That took him to the league's second top scorer on 6 goals. So some good news there Spireites!

Next came the final two games in charge for John Pemberton. Home against Maidenhead and away at Altrincham. The losing theme continued in both. Despite taking the lead in both games with Boden scoring both openers, we still managed to drop all six points. This then on 18th November, the fans got what they were calling for, Pembertons head. At the time of writing it's anyone's guess who will be the next Chesterfield boss. Stay tuned and keep the faith Spireites!

Stockport County then came to play and they too took all 3 points with a late winner which ended 1-2! Once again Tom Denton scored, this time from the spot. This theme continued on a mid week trip to Wealdstone (the rearranged fixture from the opening day) and yes you guessed it, we lost. This time it ended 3-2 and yet again big Tom scored again, twice in fact. Another disappointment from the game was 38 year old striker NathanTyson getting injured again in the first half after coming back to start his first game of the season from injury. Page 44
