Intro

Hello and a warm welcome to the first issue of S41 Local magazine. Four months ago, S41 Local was a passing conversation between three likeminded people in a shared office space, who were seeking to take on a new adventure. As with all new adventures it has brought its fair share of challenges along the way. After many early starts, late nights and weekends, we are very happy to say ‘we did it’ and can’t wait for you to read it. So who are we and what is S41 Local all about? S41 Local is the sister magazine to the long standing, reputable, community serving publication S40 Local. We have known Paul Chapman (S40 Local) for a good few year's now. We share the same values and sense of responsibility to leave the world a better place than what we found it. This led us to partnering up to produce S41 Local and we are very grateful to receive his full support and guidance with this amazing opportunity. Our aim is to bring communities together by sharing positive stories and upcoming local events, whilst supporting local businesses to thrive, building a stronger economy for us all. We will be delivering to over 6,000 homes and businesses in and around the S41 area, reaching over 10,000 Chesterfieldians (it's a real word, we googled it and everything). Within the next 12 months, with your support, we aim to increase circulation to over 8,000 homes! We are a family of 5 (including the dog), born and raised in Chesterfield and we have a passion for making a positive difference to the lives others. We have written a short bio about ourselves on pages four and five. As this is a community magazine, we wish to hear from you, the community. We want to get to know you as you get to know us, so send us your good news stories, upcoming events and positivity to bekah@s41local.com or simon@s41local.com and we will do our very best to publish them for you. We hope you enjoy our very first issue and look forward to us dropping through your letterboxes! Peace, love and positivity, Bekah & Simon

ello and welcome to the first issue of S41 Local. I can’t wait to bring you all the latest news, interviews with local heroes and the best recommendations to enjoy life in our beautiful part of Derbyshire. This time last year I was pregnant with daughter number two, suffering from morning sickness and just trying to make it through the day. Christmas was rapidly approaching, and it wasn’t just the goose who was getting fat! Like the majority of pregnant ladies at this point I was counting down the days till my maternity leave but dreading the actual birth (you boys have it easy). I was working my socks off (but couldn’t take them off unassisted) as the Derbyshire Area Manager for Young Enterprise, an Education Charity dedicated to the development of the next generation of entrepreneurs. Working with teams of students to create a business that they run for a whole year is hugely rewarding, but very tiring when heavily pregnant! To think that 6 months after my baby was born, I would be back at work full-time and Simon and I would be embarking on a new adventure, was unthinkable, but here we are!

Page 4

www.s41local.com

We have two beautiful daughters who get us out of bed every morning and sometimes in the night! Our eldest is 7; a strong-willed little girl with lots of passion for amateur dramatics and is a selfproclaimed ‘slime-entist’. She is writing a comic book called ‘Florie Adventures’ which she hopes to feature in future editions of S41. The bump is now a baby and growing too fast! She has recently decided that she no longer requires sleep to sustain her life force, we are very much divided on this! Finally, is our dog Zak. Zak is a springer spaniel, an ex-police dog who never made the grade, in fact and I quote ‘he’s untrainable’. If Zak was a human he would have been arrested for criminal damage on several occasions, last week he ate the blinds in the front room! Simon and I will be running S41 Local together, as well as raising the children, managing the dog, and will be purchasing some blinds this weekend! I hope you enjoy reading the first issue of S41 Local and I look forward to you reading our good news stories, promoting local business and sharing our journey with you. Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy new Year, Bekah.

ou may have noticed two name's in the Editor’s Letter – allow me to introduce myself a little and let you know what you can expect in the future of S41 Local.

A child of the 80’s from the mean streets of Loundsley Green, I was educated at Brockwell Junior’s and then Newbold Community School (shout out to the class of ‘95). Since then I haven’t strayed too far, now living near the town centre. One of the things I love about Chesterfield is that friendships tend to last a long time, I am still close with the same amazing group of friends I made at school all those years ago. We’ve built up quite the archive of stories to tell…but they’re probably not suitable for this magazine! Buy me a pint in the Society of Coffee Shop & Bar and I’ll be happy to share them! Growing up, I had some major ambitions in life; namely, to be a Wimbledon champion married to Anna Kournikova. While that dream didn’t quite come true, I found something better instead. As I write this, I am sat at home on the sofa watching a seven-year-old girl learn the moves to Thriller (I’m dying to join in). There is a 7-month-old baby girl in a bouncer dead chuffed with herself ‘cos she’s just recently learnt how to shout and has become very opinionated, I don’t know where she gets it from! The woman I love (Bekah just to clarify) is prancing around the front room, thinking she’s got the moves like Jagger, (she does a broken robot at best), and I wouldn’t have it any other way! This is our life; my family, and I am beyond grateful for it.

My mother was a Social Worker; the kindest and most courageous woman I’ve ever known. She taught me many lessons in life but the most important is to always help those in need if you can. It’s a common thread in my family, with my father and step-mother recently volunteering their time, money and love to visit a village in Ghana where they sponsor several children to give them a better life. I now try to follow in their footsteps, and finally feel like I am making a difference in life with my job working on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. NCS is a four-week government programme for students aged 15-17. During these four weeks we aim to build a variety of skills and attributes in the young, raising a lot of money for charities along the way! By the end of the month we return the students back to their parents and communities – (hopefully) as confident, socially conscious young leaders - ready to step out of their comfort zones and take on the world! At S41 Local we will be celebrating local people who have something to say and something to contribute to our community. It’s a wonderful, privileged opportunity and especially at this time of year too. Now that you know a little about me, I'd love to hear your good news stories and upcoming events, please send them to simon@s41local.com. All that’s left to say is a big thank you to all our advertisers, friends, family and Paul for your support and have a wonderful Christmas period and new year, Simon.

Putting Chesterfield’s health first The Chesterfield store has worked hard to ensure eye and ear health is kept front of mind. It prides itself on offering a community hub for people of all ages and walks of life, providing a reputable and trusted space to have health concerns laid to rest. This goes far beyond needing glasses or not – a routine eye test can detect a range of more serious concerns such as glaucoma, diabetes or even tumours. Mr. Rudd of Bakewell recently had a sight test in Specsavers and was diagnosed with a treatable condition. Mr Rudd advises:

‘I would urge anyone who is concerned about an issue with their sight not to put it off. I’m so glad that I didn’t bury my head in the sand, as now I have the situation under control and I am on medication that will improve my quality of life.’

Community pillars As well as working hard to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye and ear tests, the store invests a significant amount of time in supporting its charitable partners. So far in 2018, the Chesterfield Store has held events supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind, RNIB, Alzheimer's research UK and many more. Their in store bake sales are always popular and the team look for any opportunity to get out into the community and get involved.

Supporting Chesterfield’s youth in a career in eye health

And it’s even more important for parents to schedule regular eye tests for their children. Optometrist Maryum Mahmood explains:

The store has invested significantly in creating an apprenticeship scheme that seeks to support and develop Chesterfield’s next generation of eye care professionals. Some eight retail apprentices have already been employed and trained by the store, with Specsavers supporting five through university to become specialised audiologists, dispensing opticians and contact lens opticians.

‘It’s important that all children should have their eyes tested from the age of four upwards, or sooner if the parent suspects there is an issue. Finding that a child needs glasses as early as possible in life improves the chance of them enjoying excellent vision for the rest of their life. And, as sight tests for under 16s are covered by the NHS, there really is no reason not to come along.’ Page 14

Can you see yourself joining the team? Opportunities and growth Store Director Vicki Bainbridge continues to support future generations by offering a further three apprenticeships: ‘Supporting apprenticeships is key to our ethos here and we’re currently recruiting for three more to join us in store. Our approach has seen us shortlisted for Apprentice Employer of the Year at Chesterfield’s Apprentice Awards, and we’re currently finalists for the apprentice award at Specsavers’ Awards for Excellence. By offering skilled career paths for young people, we can help support Chesterfield’s economy and contribute to the long-term future of our town.’

A local partner Specsavers’ success is success for Chesterfield. Gareth Webster, Retail Partner said:

‘Not everybody realises that Specsavers are locallyowned businesses, operating under the Specsavers umbrella. We have the state-of-the-art technology of a national brand with the trusted community presence to make sure we’re giving customers a tailored experience.’ Unless your vision has changed, you may not give your eyes much thought when it comes to health. But your eyes can actually tell us a lot about your general health, even if they don’t feel any different. That’s why it’s so important to have your eyes tested regularly.

What’s your perfect outfit? 5 essential tips to picking your perfect party outfit from Joy Gregory – The style and confidence coach for women who want to look their best. If you want to discover your body shape, a colour analysis, or personal shop The Style Guide are on hand to help!

A

s women, Christmas is a time of the year when we put so much pressure on ourselves to pick that dazzling, perfect, outfit. It can be THE only time of year we get dressed up and have the added stress of dressing out of our comfort zone in front of our professional, corporate, colleagues. Some of you might wear uniforms day to day and the thought of ‘dressing up’ fills you with dread. Here are my top tips when purchasing your festive outfit, keeping stress to a minimum and giving yourself the best chance of looking and feeling fantastic.

• Identify where your event is and what the climate will be? Will you need to wrap up walking to the pub, or be in a hotel on a hot and sweaty dance floor? Your outfit needs to be tailored to your environment

• Short list 3 options before starting to shop. Regardless of whether you’re shopping online or in person, for example, dress, jumpsuit or skirt.

• Pick your outfit based on your body shape. Don’t just take a stab in the dark with the latest trends. Consciously select the style you buy based on your shape.

• Make sure whatever you buy feels like you and is AUTHENTIC. If it is the only time of year you dress all girly and it feels slightly out of your comfort zone, still make sure it feels like you.

• Before you buy ANYTHING, decide on what footwear you are planning to wear. If you don’t have appropriate footwear, buy it before or WITH your party outfit. You will ruin your night if you don’t have comfortable feet and it can ruin an outfit if your footwear isn’t working with your body shape.

S

inging in a choir or community group could give you a feeling of enormous wellbeing. Taking part in a class or club on a weekly basis provides structure, support and valuable contact that helps improve your mood, and let’s face it we all need that once in a while. Whether it’s for fun and/or to develop skills for that X Factor audition, singing is a healthy way to help you function better in your day-to-day life. My eldest daughter aged 7, has been attending Jessica Widdowson Performing arts for 10 months now. Before she started singing lessons she was, a little, shy and reserved when meeting new people. In just a few short months her confidence has grown and her ability to communicate with people from all walks of life has improved. May this year saw her singing a solo from Les Misérables at the Montgomery Theatre in front of 250 people and I couldn’t have been any prouder! To see my little girl, perform at such a young age was a moment and memory I will cherish forever. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I asked her what she thought of Jess and JW Academy “I really enjoy going to my singing lessons with Jess, she makes it lots of fun. I really like to learn all the new songs she teaches me, and I think my voice has got a lot better’ Jessica – Director of JW Performing Arts says “my classes support all ages with confidence building, team work, resilience and communication skills but with the added fun of learning the skill of singing, acting and dance’

‘Classes happen in a local community hall with bags of space for your little one to burn off energy. All students work towards practical certificates and are supported fully. They will also work towards taking part in the annual show in May and the Christmas performance in December’ If your little one is a back seat singer, a bedroom dancer or a front room performer then I can’t recommend taking them to JW Academy enough, and who knows, they could be the next big thing! Head along to a class and discover the magic of JW Academy: • Bespoke 121 lessons • Fridays 4:30 – 5:30 – Mini’s ages 3 – 4 years • Fridays 4:30 – 6:45 – JW Academy ages 3 – 19 years For more information contact Jessica Widdowson - Director on 07961 062498 JW Academy

Chesterfield Based Association Tackles Employment Issues Words: Victoria Castelluccio Images: UKATA

U

K Asbestos Training Association, based at Markham Vale and lead by newly appointed Chief Operating Officer Craig Evans, offers support to local unemployed, career changers and entrepreneurs.

UKATA set the standards in asbestos training, with almost 200-member companies delivering asbestos training throughout the UK. Despite the deadly building material being banned in the UK in 1999, more than 1.3 million people in the UK still come into occupational contact with asbestos and it is responsible for more than 5,000 deaths every year. With many buildings that were constructed or refurbished before the year 2000, particularly between the 1950s and 1980s, containing asbestos, there is an increasing need for people to be aware of the dangers of this cancer-causing material.

The certified training is available now until March 2019 with UKATA-approved providers throughout the UK. Craig Evans, COO said

“I have always been passionate about learning and development, fortunate enough to have started my journey through employment via an apprenticeship scheme, I have taken any training opportunities that have come my way". “this campaign allows those who might not have been able to afford training to fulfil a role within the construction industry, a stepping stone to achieving their career goals”.

Following discussions with the Department for Work and Pensions, UKATA launched a partnership in October 2018 to offer FREE asbestos training to those looking for employment within the construction industry. Over 2,000 hours have already been pledged throughout the UK this year, with the figure expecting to double within the next 3 months.

Young Enterprise appoints new board member 2018 has seen another partnership for UKATA with Young Enterprise, which welcomed Craig to the local volunteer board in September. Young Enterprise work directly with students , their teachers and parents, businesses and influencers to build a successful and sustainable future for all young people and society at large. The mission is to empower young people to discover, develop and celebrate their skills and potential, something which Craig is extremely passionate about.

Craig has a successful team of former and existing apprentices in his 10 strong workforce, who are prime examples of how mentoring schemes can work. Craig believes that with the business knowledge he has developed, he can work with the Young Enterprise board and young people to unlock their potential and help develop the skills they can’t learn from textbooks. In less than 15 years, Craig Evans has gone from a 17-year old apprentice to holding the most senior position in a national trade association. Using the apprenticeship route, Craig has been able to fulfil his career ambitions to date rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer in 2018 which is one of the reasons Craig is so passionate to support the Young Enterprise Scheme.

Top Tips

Perfect your Poinsettia Make this year's Christmas display fit for Santa, with Bellissimi's tips and tricks! • Keep your Poinsettia warm when transporting it home, ideally put it in a bag to protect from the cold air. • Poinsettias love the warm air from our central heating during the winter, they should be placed in a room that will be consistently kept between 15 and 18 degrees. • Try to avoid placing your plant on windowsills, these can often have a draft and be colder than the rest of the house. • If you are putting your plant by the window, ensure the leaves aren’t touching the glass, this will damage them. • Place your poinsettia in a bright place spot out of direct sunlight. • Your poinsettia prefers a humid environment, if using a mist spray be careful not to spray the foliage. • The simple way to create humidity around the plant is to fill a shallow tray or saucer with pebbles, cover with water and stand the plant in the pot on top of the pebbles. • Be careful not to over water your poinsettia, you should only need to water if the soil is starting to dry out. • Ensure that the pot has good drainage and never leave it sitting in water. • How often you need to water will depend on the temperature of your house. • If your poinsettia is being over or under watered, it’s leaves will start to wilt and turn yellow. You should be able to diagnose the issue by checking the moisture level of the soil with your finger.

Chesterfield Investment Summit Words: Paul Chapman Images: Destination Chesterfield

It's early on a Wednesday morning and I’m at Casa Hotel with a couple of hundred keen investors, business owners and Chesterfield Champions to hear what some of the shapers and leaders of our area have in store for Chesterfield in the coming years. James Berresford

James Berresford Derbyshire Culture, Heritage Arts & Tourism Board James Berresford is Chair of Derbyshire Culture, Heritage Arts and Tourism Board. Chesterfield born and bred, it's his job to make the most of the visiting tourists that come to Derbyshire each year, to make the best of what we have to offer, “a world class destination offering world class products.” The Trends

• The UK is number eight in the top ten list of tourist destinations across the world. • The tourism sector supports 28,000 jobs across Derbyshire.

• Tourists in Derbyshire spend £2.15b PA, a growth of 1.3% over last year - over half spent by day visitors. “Our aspiration is to get more people to stay in the area” he explains. “People want a good time, just look at the selfies on social media which all say ‘I’m having a better time than you.’ People don’t want to stay in poor quality accommodation, they want an authentic experience with meaning, in a world where we don’t know what’s true and fake anymore.

“The demographic is changing, we're getting older and are no longer prepared to accept a sedentary lifestyle, people are looking for experiences that stimulate and challenge. “Leisure patterns and the family unit is changing, and people want something different. Technology plays a huge part in life, we’ve seen a 100% growth in bookings online, originating from tablets and mobiles, many never visit a travel agent, how they choose a destination has changed and Trip Advisor can very quickly tell us what a place is really like. “People are Value Seeking, new habits form and people are always looking for a ‘bit of a deal’. What can I get? Page 28

“People take more short breaks, ‘holiday snacking’ as it’s known, the typical two-week summer holiday is being replaced with 7 to 10 days for the main break supported by many weekends and short breaks, and it’s all very last minute, driven by the weather ... will it be dry this weekend? Yes, OK pack the bags, let’s go.” World Class Assets

I found James's talk uplifting, we already have a number of world class assets in the area; The Peak District National Park, jam packed with hundreds of beautiful destinations, The ‘Crooked’ Spire of St Mary’s & All Saints, Chatsworth House, Casa Hotel, numerous heritage sites. He talked about how these need to link together, how an experience must flow between them, how we need to make access and travel easy, how we need to embrace sustainability and how all businesses that could benefit from the tourist £ need to behave, no matter how large or small. He finished with a couple of personal experiences. When working in London, each day he would buy a coffee from Pret A Manger where they are always happy and polite. One day he was met with rude staff and left thinking ‘this isn’t on’ so he tweeted about it. Within minutes they’re back to him to find out what’s wrong and by the end of the day he’s been provided with a voucher, his poor experience transformed to a positive. An example of how hospitality and service skills need to be focused. His last point raised a laugh. One job was marketing Sherwood Forest, he’d heard how taxi drivers can be less than positive about the area so decided to test this out. Posing as a tourist he took a taxi ride asking the driver about the area, the driver was extremely positive, waxing lyrical about the area, even giving the square mile size of the forest. The driver finished stating, ‘the problem, is with the people who promote the area, they’re crap!’ What a wake-up call to the task ahead.

Huw Bowen Chief Exec Chesterfield Borough Council Huw Bowen makes a regular apperance at these events to provide an overview of progress in and around town. He’s passionate about town but is in a difficult position, tasked with delivering all the services we want, with an ever-decreasing budget. Huw explained that although visitor numbers and the money they spend is increasing, the number of people staying is low and needs a boost. He outlined how important events are for bringing people into the area; youth football, Custom Solar cricket tournament, the Redbrik half marathon, the OVO Women’s Tour of Britain, and the various markets; food, motor and 1940s, all help. Town Centre

Huw also expressed how impressed he is with the investment being made by Chesterfield’s young people - Bottle & Thyme, The Crafty Dog, Sorbo Lounge, the new businesses along Stephenson’s place, driven by young entrepreneurs. Many of the new businesses were covered in our May edition (see s40local.co.uk/previous-editions/). Council lead developments will see a significant change to the look and feel of our town. The new Saltergate car park will provide 530 spaces, more than the combined space previously in use at the car park and the Holywell cross site (Donut). The car park will provide wider parking bays, 32 disabled spaces, 15 parent and child spaces and will include automated roller shutters at vehicular entrances and exits, and access control via paper tickets at the pedestrian entrance and 24 hour CCTV coverage.

A new innovation hub will be built on the old site of the Holywell Cross car park, the entire Northern Gateway scheme bringing over 500 new jobs. The Chesterfield Waterside is still planned to be on site in 2019, changing the skyline with contemporary 11 storey apartment blocks.

The old North East Derbyshire County Council offices on Saltergate have been purchased by McCarthy Stone offering 61 town centre style retirement apartments on the edge of the glorious Peak District. Out of Town

The HS2 development brings with it plans for a new Staveley link road (£22m of the £50 million required has already been secured). This will feed a new Garden Village of 1500 homes; school and retail planned over the next 15 years before the first trains arrive in 2033. This is just one part of the plans that will hopefully see 5000 new homes built in various schemes delivered by 2033. Please Mention S41 Local

Santa's not so little helper! Meet socially conscious toy-maker Jonathan Foster Words: Simon Paterson Images: Petitbooche

S

41 Local has the pleasure of sharing office space with a variety of local, creative, entrepreneurs. One of these talented individuals just so happens to be Jonathan Foster, aka: Petitbooche. Petitbooche (Jonathan) is a children’s toy-maker with a difference: none of the products contain plastic! I caught up with Jonathan earlier this month for a coffee and a chat about his business and vision for the future. When I say caught up, I mean interupted him as usual! “I have always been a very creative, hands-on person. Whilst studying photography at Derby University, I dabbled in furniture restoration as a hobby” says Jonathan. “5 years ago, I was honoured with the privilege of becoming godfather to two beautiful rays of sunshine, Aggie Boo and Woody Che, which is where I got my name from… Petitbooche, not Jonathan!” “Whilst searching for a unique gift for them, I realised that I was more than capable of making the perfect gift myself, with that extra special touch. Armed with YouTube tutorials, felt and some cotton, I taught myself to sew. The kids already had a fabric tepee, so I set about making them a felt camp fire to match.” “The whole process rewarded me with the most wonderful and simplest of joys, so much so that I decided to pursue toy-making as not only a hobby, but as a business. I have been perfecting

Page 32

my craft for a little over 5 years now, and was very excited when Petitbooche officially started trading in September last year”. “Over the past few years, I have become more environmentally conscious. The toy industry is a huge contributor to the global plastic crisis. I am happy to say that none of my products contain plastic, and are all washable, which makes them sustainable” “All of the toys I make are safety tested to CE standards. I aim to make bright, colourful, interactive toys for babies and toddlers. I believe imaginative play is very important in a child’s development, and I always have that in mind when designing my next piece” Jonathan explains. “As I stand right now, I am a very small and immensely fresh venture, but one thing I can promise is that as long as I create even half the things that I can imagine, there will be plenty more to come!” Jonathan makes a variety of toys, ranging from vegetable patches, to tool belts, and constellation wall banners. His Christmas collection includes mince pies, carrots and Christmas trees! Please contact Jonathan on petitbooche@outlook.com with any bespoke requests. S41 Local Hero

There's always a listening ear at Nenna Kind S41 Local Hero: Philip Jarvis Words: Simon Paterson Images: Nenna Kind

P

hilip Jarvis claimed to the be the funniest man who ever lived, to give him his dues, he was a pretty funny guy who put a smile on the face of everyone he met. You would only have to mention his name to someone who knew him and hey presto, there’s the smile. Now, he may not have been the funniest man who lived, but I am certain he was one of the most generous, kind and selfless individuals Chesterfield has ever produced. So why am I writing about Philp Jarvis? Upon retiring Phil dedicated most of his time to raising funds and awareness for a charity which supported him when he needed it the most; Nenna Kind. Phil raised thousands of pounds for Nenna Kind and is our first S41 Local Hero. Nenna Kind are a charity based in the heart of Chesterfield that have been helping cancer patients and their families since 2010 in a number of ways. They offer services such as emotional support, alternative therapies and provide vital transport to medical appointments at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. Phil had felt the benefits of this support directly and knew that when he was feeling better, he could give something back and help them by fundraising. I use the term ‘fundraising’ lightly, Phil was a high-pressure salesman and very good at it as well! People buy people first, and Phil was a great purchase. Persistent to a fault with ticket sales for his events and requests for auction prizes, as soon as I saw Phil on the caller ID, I knew I had to put my hand in my pocket. This is how Phil managed to raise a substantial amount for Nenna Kind and leave a lasting impact on the charity, its service users and all the guests that attended his many events.

Page 34

www.s41local.com

Sadly, in 2018 at the age of 62 Phil passed away. His spirit and enthusiasm carry on in his family who continue to support Nenna Kind and fundraise in his memory. In remembrance of Phil and to continue his great work, the Holme Hall Pub will be hosting an event on the 28th of December. This event will raise vital funds to support the centre and its service users; with live music; raffles and bingo it’s sure to be a fun night for a very worthy cause. Garden Tips

December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet? This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space. 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and a pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. Ideally keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. 10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2019 Potato Day (January 26th). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late winter planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www. potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in). Pre-ordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 6th December 2018. At the Inspire Community Garden we are holding a ‘Tree Dressing Day’ on Sunday 2nd December which is an annual opportunity to celebrate trees, it is a way to raise awareness of the value of trees, and provides an opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together and give thanks to the humble tree. It is open to all ages, you can either bring along your own decoration and we will help you hang it on our tree or make a decoration on the day to hang on our tree or take home and hang on your own tree. urn off the IPAD, put down your phone and get walking at LadyBower Reservoir. Take in the spectacular views, breathe in that fresh air and finish off with a pint of Batemans Yella Belly Gold in The LadyBower Inn. Walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get active and become healthier. Walking has so many health benefits, you don't have to walk for hours just a brisk daily walk has lots of health benefits; trim your waistline, improve your cardiopulmonary system, reduce arthritis pain, improve mental attitude, manage high blood pressure, strengthen your bones, increase your lifespan and even reduce stress! So venture out over the holidays and get walking! Route Details: Difficulty - moderate Duration - 1 hour 20 minutes Length - 4 miles Dog friendly - Yes Start: Fairholmes car park, grid ref: SK173893 1. Start your walk at Fairholmes car park, turning right out of the car park and following the road towards Derwent Dam. 2. Walk past the Dam and follow the road uphill, walking alongside Ladybower Reservoir on the right and Old House Farm on the left, towards the site of the old Derwent Village. 3. The village was flooded when the Dam was built in the Second World War. Only two buildings remain; the Lodge and the schoolroom, which

you pass as you walk along the lane. To view the site of the village and an information panel, continue down the slope and across a bridge. Retrace your route back up the short slope and at the top, turn sharp right at the end of a high wall onto a track, over a stile and past the ruins of a farm. 4. Continue uphill until just after a cottage where the path divides. Keep left and climb uphill through open fields and then over a stile onto moorland. After about 0.5 mile (0.8km) and a right turn by a wall corner, as the track levels, you will pass Pike Low 100yd (90m) on your left. 5. Continue along this track above Mill Brook, below on your right. Follow the track to the Scots pine shelter belt ahead, the site of a substantial shooting cabin, with two lines of grouse butts running towards Green Sitches (a sitch being a ditch or wet area). Keep left at a fork just before the pines. 6. Follow the track until it turns right at a fence. Cross the fence by the stile and continue to the derelict farmstead of Bamford House along the edge of the moor, with Derwent Reservoir below on your left. 7. On reaching Bamford House, turn left and take the steep path downhill towards the reservoir. Turn left again once you reach Derwent Reservoir and follow this track alongside the reservoir and back towards Derwent Dam and Fairholmes car park. End: Fairholmes car park, grid ref: SK173893
