Copy Date Friday 31st Dec

As 2021 draws to a close I find myself in a state of reflection. In many ways 2021 has been challenging, but I also cannot remember a happier time in my life and I think a lot of it has to do with my mindset. I start and end each day from a position of gratitude, reframing information positively in my mind should a negative thought enter. For example, we spent the first three months of the year living with Bekah's mother Sue, as we sold our house and waited for the new one to go through. I spent the majority of this time sleeping on a put-up-bed in the living room (basically just cushions!). My younger self would have moaned daily about this situation, but my present self was instead grateful that Sue had opened her home to us. We formed a bond that cannot be broken; thank you, Sue, we love you, sorry for eating all the chocolate! I took on a second job (again) at Galaxy Travel driving a taxi for a few hours every morning as S41’s business suffered from Covid. My younger self would have been looking up at the hill that I had already climbed to get the magazine where it needs to be, thinking "I can't believe I have to climb this again." My present self is just grateful that the opportunity and challenge exists. Thanks to our brilliant readers and advertisers, we’re making our way back up that hill. Throughout this year there have been countless times – whether it’s health scares or finances - when I could easily have been unhappy or grumpy but I made the choice instead to be grateful for what I have. It’s led to this year being a happy one! Maybe the meaning of life is to simply enjoy the passage of time? If it is, then my life truly has meaning! I want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Here's to gratitude and a happy 2022! Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah and the kids simon@s41local.com 07716 014002 Next edition: Winter Copy Date: Friday 31st December Delivered by: Sunday 16th January

Kelly Sheldon 13 Bends Design

Text: Paul Chapman Images: Kelly Sheldon (13 Bends Design) This month’s cover art comes from Kelly Sheldon our regular cartoonist.

Kelly describes herself as someone who sits in her cupboard working, listening to podcasts and fitting work around her young family. I’ve worked with Kelly for a number of years, she previously helped me with advert design and layout before leaving to concentrate on her business 13 Bends Design.

Kelly suffers from Usher Syndrome, a condition that affects her eyesight which may deteriorate over the years. “I wanted to work for myself as it gave me the independence I need to ensure I don’t end up suffering when I work,” says Kelly. “It also allows me to work within constraints I set myself. Some jobs I’ve done have put me in situations I felt uncomfortable with, manual elements I struggle with so working for myself has been fab,” explains Kelly. “It’s important that I continue to work and contribute to the family.” Kelly loves working with local Brampton start ups, but work isn’t restricted to just businesses, she’s been involved in supporting many local community groups and is looking at how she can contribute more. “I work with a disability, and I'd love to offer support and guidance into the world of design, showing others that might be struggling with confidence that there are ways into work.” “My community work has involved the recent Spadgerfest designs, Page 10

Monkey Park's logos and flyers, Wastenot Café menus and Charlies Place, a fabulous animal sanctuary run by Will and Claire. If you don’t know about this place, you should definitely check it out … the 'Hogspital' is fab!”

Kelly trained as a cartoonist before starting Graphic Design and she offers services that cover, logo design, cartoons, illustration, high quality print. Many of her clients are local, you’ll pass her logo designs every day. All this from a Mum of two who loves to spend as much time with them as she can.

Businesses she's worked with include, start up Vegged (Sheffield Road), Ingman’s Cobblers, Brampton Brewery, Meadowfresh, Oculi Opticians, Peak Knives and Sheldon Guitar Repairs (her husband Chris’s business) to name a few. Talk to any of her clients and they’ll tell you how supportive Kelly is, discussing jobs outside of the usual 9 to 5, the only time many people can meet to move things forward, people just like her, mixing work and family. Outside of her design cupboard you’ll find Kelly singing with Chris, gigging as The Shambles.

I’d like to say a huge thanks to Kelly for the cartoons and covers (she did edition 102 when we reached ten years old) and also for generally being so supportive of S40 Local I still remember her positivity when I started out looking for print prices 13 years ago! www.s41local.com

PHIL SPENCER ANNOUNCES TOP AGENTS FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE IN THE UK

PINEWOOD LAND SIX AWARDS AT PRESTIGOUS ESTAS AWARDS IN LONDON

The Chesterfield based agency Pinewood Property Estates received the Gold Grand Prix Award for Best Addalong a little bit Silver of body text Letting Agent in the UK, with and Gold for Best Estate and Letting Agent in the East Midland at the prestigious ESTAS Customer Service Awards 2021 sponsored by Coadjute, the biggest awards in the UK property industry. Pinewood Property Estate finally finished with 4 Golds and 2 Silvers at the awards. The winners were announced at the largest event in the property industry in 2 years held at the Grosvenor House in London and hosted by the country’s favourite TV property presenter Phil Spencer in front of 1,100 guests.

Phil Spencer, who has hosted The ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 addressed the live audience “You’ve had to work incredibly hard, you’ve had to adapt your businesses, you’ve had to absorb considerable costs to follow the protocols and to enable things to happen safely. Quite simply delivering great service has never been more challenging so The ESTAS Awards for 2021 are the most well deserved ever in their entire 18 year history!” Estate and letting agents were recognised in counties and regions around the UK.National Grand Prix Awards were also announced for the Best Single Agent Office in sales and lettings. Simon Brown Founder of The ESTAS said “When we started we wanted to create a set of property awards which were completely pure, where winners were selected solely on customer service ratings from actual transactions. Eighteen years on ESTAS is now the customer review platform of choice for property professionals and the most prestigious award an agent, a conveyancer or mortgage broker can win in the property industry.” Stacey Davies-Bowler, Managing Director of Pinewood Property Estates said “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this year’s ESTAS and walk away with 4 Golds and 2 Silvers is absolutely amazing. It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service and this proves we are delivering what we promise. We are just an independent Estate Agent from Chesterfield fighting against some of the largest Agents in the country so to win Gold at the ESTAS is even more humbling”

Environment

I'm dreaming of a green Christmas Words: Maisie Cook Images: Adobe Stock & Paul Chapman

W

ho doesn’t love an annual Christmas shopping spree, togged up in your hat, scarf and gloves and on the hunt for a bedazzled outfit to deck yourself out in on the big day? Just thinking about it now gives me the festive butterflies. There is no better feeling than spending £30 purchasing the gift of your girlfriend’s dreams (or so you think…) and then packaging it up carefully with shiny, new wrapping paper. After you’ve stuffed yourself silly like a Christmas turkey and scraped the leftover sprouts into the bin, it’s time to roll into the living room and rip open 3 million ‘HO HO HO’ cards from family and friends galore. But whilst all these activities may sound comfortingly cosy and familiar, this year it’s time for a different kind of Christmas. An ecofriendly Christmas. Whilst I let this proposition sink in, allow me to debunk a common misconception which most probably popped into your head upon first reading the phrase. Let visions of hours of handcrafting bespoke gifts made from leaves and twigs fizzle away. Think no more of painful cuts from folding piece of paper after piece of paper in order to make your own Christmas cards and save the dying planet in the process. Being sustainable during the festive period doesn’t have to be physically demanding or time consuming. With all your fears and worries hopefully long gone, take a look at these five trouble-free, painless (and even fun) ways to reduce your carbon footprint this Christmas whilst still having a jolly good time!

1. Rethinking your Chrimbo ‘fit

It’s easy to get carried away in the month of December. Your friends are all ordering a fresh outfit for the 25th and it would just be simpler to use the Internet to purchase that black velvet dress, the one you’d had in mind which you could Page 14

pair with a black clutch bag and silver heels, except you don’t have those either so… they can go in the basket too! But wait. Don’t you already have a green velvet dress hanging in your wardrobe from last Christmas Day? Admittedly, it’s green not black, but I doubt Auntie Carol is going to remember and at the cost of saving the planet, it’s a much kinder alternative. If this all sounds too much to bear and you can’t possibly wear the same outfit twice, consider a clothes swap

with your friends, as they will most likely have a similarly fancy outfit hanging dormant in their wardrobe, or visit your local charity shop where you are sure to find a party outfit, and at a price worth partying for too (rest assured, you won’t have to wear a pair of grandad trousers).

2. Choosing more eco-friendly alternatives for wrapping

Not many people enjoy the task of packaging up Christmas presents. The feeling of rage when you are unable to find the end of the Sellotape is unlike any other. When you open out a bottle bag only to

www.s41local.com

find the champagne cork sticks out of the top - that is when you’ve really hit rock bottom. But what if I were to make a suggestion that might improve this difficult task just a tiny bit? You could help the planet just by reusing wrapping paper. It doesn’t just have to be Christmas-themed either; other suitable celebratory wrapping paper can be used too, provided it doesn’t have ‘Wishing you a happy birthday’ emblazoned across it in bold lettering. Although the temptation to rip open a gift with as much enthusiasm as possible may be too strong for the little ones, it surely wouldn’t be impossible for you to open your presents more carefully and tuck the neatly folded wrapping paper away in a drawer for next year’s gifts, being sure to say your Thank Yous first.

Another sustainable substitute proving to be trendy this year is using offcuts of material instead of wrapping paper, think discarded t-shirts, pyjamas or any other items bearing bright and cheerful designs - this not only eliminates Sellotape but more importantly, adds a unique, personalised touch to your gifts.

3. Considering your gift-buying habits

Staying on the topic of recycling, let’s talk presents. It is reported that each year, the UK spends an estimated £700 million on unwanted gifts and £42 million worth of those end up in a landfill! How many of us receive a pair of garish socks year after year from a distant family member which end up being thrown away? Think about creating an online wishlist to ensure loved ones don’t gift you items you won’t use. In addition, buying from local businesses at Christmas time is a great idea, as not only will you be putting money into their deserving pockets, but you can be certain of their origin. A few suggestions, Libby's offers a variety of products from independent UK makers and designers, and M's Gallery and Adorn Jewellery also seek out the best UK makers for items that are both beautiful and quirky.

Don’t worry, the death of the Christmas card is not upon us. Consider just sending Christmas cards to elderly relatives and people you rarely see at Christmas time, making use of local sources such as Sally Ginger and Herbert & Rose.

You can go completely paper-free, there’s a variety of e-card websites where you can choose your design, enter a festive message along with the recipient’s email address and let those magical things known as airwaves do the delivering for you.

5. Putting those leftovers to good use

Probably the most damaging effect that Christmas has on the environment is the food waste. We all know that overly full feeling, the point you reach where that last green sphere staring up at you from amongst the mash would cause your trouser button to fly off in despair. ‘I just can’t manage that last mouthful’ or words to that effect leave your mouth. So, the plates are swiftly swept away from under your nose and the remnants from your plate are emptied into the rubbish. That one leftover sprout could have been something. He could have made it big. He could’ve been reborn. Pan-fried into a lovely bubble and squeak or stirred into a casserole with leftover parsnips too. You could even take inspiration (if you dare…) from Paul’s turkey pie recipe. I’m certain a few rogue sprouts concealed beneath the meat wouldn’t alter the taste too much. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying parsnip soup for breakfast, dinner, and tea!

4. Using another mode to send greetings cards

Another common item which is often discarded unsustainably at Christmas is the greetings card. The London Cleaning System reports that around 1 billion Christmas cards end up in the bin every year, when they could be recycled. Is it really worth the environmental impact, the hand ache from writing ‘Seasons Greetings’ a thousand times over, and the cost of the cards in the first place, just for a two second glance at the generic ink inside? You must think I’m a heartless bah-humbug, but nothing could be further from the truth. Please Mention S41 Local

’ll give you one guess what Ginners Bar, the latest edition to Chesterfield town centres thriving night-life scene sells? That’s right, gin! And, what a selection, with over 40 to choose from!

Ginners Bar is the kind of place you take pictures of yourself in and post them on Instagram because it’s cool, and by association, so are you! The décor is rustic with the perfect blend of exposed metal and wood throughout, yet somehow manages to create that homely, warm feeling you have when you finally settle down with a glass of your chosen tipple after a hard day. Ginners is the brainchild of lifelong Cestrefeldian, Jon Burton. I was lucky enough to catch-up with him to sample the goods, I mean interview him!

"If I'm honest I didn’t. I had only tried a couple of gins previously and didn’t really like it. So, naturally, not liking gin, I thought I better open a gin bar! But since doing my research I have grown to love gin, I am a big fan of fruit gins. With gin it’s about finding the right one for you, there is a gin for everyone and here we have a massive choice, so pop in and get trying, sensibly of course." At this point I thought I had better sample the goods. Jon asked me a few questions about my pallet before recommending a cloudy lemon gin by Lonewolf with a plain tonic. I drank it. All of it. It was good. I’ll be back

Jon, tell me a bit about Ginners, please?

"We are (Ginners) a new gin bar in the town centre. You’d be forgiven for assuming we named it after the drink, but we called the bar Ginners in remembrance of my late step dad Ginner who was amazing. We have a wide selection of over 40 premium gins and tonics plus a range of spirits; including rums, vodkas, whiskeys, beers and ciders. So, we are a new bar in town, a nice friendly place with a wide choice of drinks at a reasonable price." Have you always wanted to open a gin bar, has this been on your long-term goal list for some time?

"Well, initially I was thinking of a micro-pub in a nice quiet village in or around the Peak District, somewhere like Holymoorside. I’ve been keeping a lookout for some time for any opportunities that came up and this bar became available. It was opened briefly by the previous owners as a micropub so It was easy to convert it into a gin bar." Did you know much about gin before you opened a gin bar, if not I can’t imagine the research was a chore? Page 18

www.s41local.com

Where do you see Ginners slotting into the Chesterfield high street?

"I see it as more of an early bar, having said that we had people coming in right up until midnight sampling the gins and beers that we do. Being situated opposite the Winding Wheel it’s the perfect spot for a pre or post show drink. It’s the kind of bar you pop into after work with your colleagues for a quick drink before the commute home, or take someone on a first or 100th date. It’s a bar for anyone on any occasion and I can’t wait to meet all of your lovely readers."

Ginners is a wonderful edition to Stephenson’s Place and I have no doubt that it will be here for many years to come. So, pop down say ‘ey-up’ to Jon and post some photos on Instagram, you know you want to. Ginners 35 Stephenson's Place Chesterfield S40 1XL Tel: 01246 938778 @Ginnersmicrobar

rom stadium performances, The Royal Albert Hall to recording her own album, Laura Alsop has done it all. Now, armed with a plethora of qualifications and a passion for teaching, Laura has launched the Chesterfield Vocal Studio.

The Chesterfield Vocal Studio combines Laura’s passion for singing, her talent for teaching and a state of the art technical set-up.

Music is my thing, so when Laura invited me down to the studio, I jumped at the chance.

Upon entering the studio, you can see the amount of work, expense and love that has gone into it from the off. It’s the kind of place you’d imagine Beyonce recording her next album. The décor is modern, clean, professional yet welcoming and comfortable. Laura’s partner Richard has to be credited for this amazing set up, which was two years in the making! He has a wealth of experience as a musical equipment technician and is a full-time electrician. What he doesn’t know about tech, isn’t worth knowing! All this tech and Laura’s array of qualifications means The Chesterfield Vocal Studio offer a variety of services: Vocal coaching Vocal diagnosis Performance coaching Recording studio sessions Audition preparation Vocal health and problem correction Show reel creation Singing exams and qualifications “I have worked hard to obtain the relevant and required qualifications to register the Chesterfield Vocal Studio as an official centre for educational learning. This means my students can obtain professional singing qualifications, which I am super happy about. We offer these in person and remotely as well,” says Laura. Page 20

I asked Laura, who is vocal coaching for?

“It is for anyone who likes to sing and wants to improve, from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. I can help experienced performers manage their vocal health, utilising safe vocal techniques. Children as young as five can come to the studio and sing songs like the wheels on the bus, learn to count rhythm and have fun!" Tell me about the kit you have you in here?

"We have the teaching space and the recording studio. The recording studio is a fully equipped, soundproofed vocal studio. We cater for a variety of acts from solo performers to small bands. Not only do we have the audio recording facilities, but we also have visual. This means we can create showreels or audition tapes. All our lessons are fully recorded and sent to the students so they can reflect and enjoy them any time. It’s a great tool for learning." Laura had a huge smile on her face from the moment I walked in. It’s clear she loves what she does and it’s inspiring to see someone who has worked so hard for their dream, achieve it!

The Chesterfield Vocal Studio is open and ready for business and I think a visit to see Laura would make an amazing Christmas present! Be sure to get it booked quickly though as clients are already singing at the door for entry. To book in with Laura or to find out more, you can contact her on:

We’re always looking out for our clients here at Jones & Co. From the first meeting we have with a potential client, we listen and get to know what is important to them. Only by understanding exactly what people need and where they want to be, financially and personally, can we help them to get there. And, of course, with every will in the world, it’s never a smooth road!

Oh, and I should mention that Jones & Co is a fully signed up member of the Personal Finance Society’s Financial Vulnerability Task Force, an initiative that encourages IFAs to promote greater understanding, appropriate behaviours and good practice in respect of consumer vulnerability. Another way for us to underline that for every bump in the road, we’re here.

othing ever runs smoothly, does it? In my line of work, maintaining order and compliance throughout the business are my main objectives. Striving to ensure things do go smoothly is a key part of the job. But it’s inevitable that there will be bumps in the road along the way for all of us. We never know what’s around the corner, so it helps to know that when you do hit a bump, there’s someone looking out for you.

We pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our clients. They can rely on us to be there whenever they need advice, a discussion or even just someone to talk to. Change is part of life, and we make sure we’re here when things do change and a bump in the road appears. It’s often at this point in their lives that clients are at their most vulnerable and having a person they trust to support and advise them is crucial.

We help people all the time. It’s actually what makes us tick because it makes everything worthwhile. We enjoy helping people, watching them succeed and prosper in spite of what life throws at them. Being an independent financial advice firm is as much about people as it is about finance and investment. The two go hand in hand.

On a daily basis, we assist people to make difficult financial decisions. Take succession planning for example. Preparing for when you’re no longer here isn’t something any of us want to think about. However, guiding clients through this process and creating a bespoke plan always delivers the same result: a sense of relief and comfort that those they love will be financially secure. At the same time, we also provide expert advice for our clients who have lost a loved one and received an inheritance. Often people in this situation have an idea of what they would like to do and that usually involves honouring the loved one’s wishes to leave a lasting and beneficial legacy. Education

Lessons from lockdown Words & images: Nathan Harmer

n Tuesday the 26 October, a group of educators spent a day at Chesterfield college, as part of an international, Erasmus+ funded project, called 'Lessons from Lockdown'. The aim of this project is to find, collate, and share examples of innovation in education that supported learners through lockdown. The group was made up of representatives from the following organisations: Centre of International Learning and Leadership (UK), Momentum World CIC (UK), Chesterfield College (UK), Otvorena Hra (Slovakia), Cirkevna Spojena Skola (Slovakia), Regionale Centrum Wolotariatu (Poland), and 5th Secondary School ks.Piotr Sciegienny (Poland). Director of CILL, Andrew Hadley - "From my point of view it's extremely important that people share their knowledge and expertise across borders".

In this project there are three core countries; UK, Poland, Slovakia. But it also aims to collect five case studies from 12 different countries. Once the

Page 26

60 case studies have been collected, Chesterfield College digital & media students will create a virtual space that will house these case studies. The case studies will be focused around innovative ways educators kept students engaged through lockdown. The brief the students have been given is, to create a V.R space that will have 12 different areas (an area for each of the 12 countries involved). These areas will include features that represent each country, for example, iconic buildings, climate, nature, and sounds. Within each of these areas, you will then be able to find case studies from the respective country. The visiting organisations were extremely impressed by the facilities that Chesterfield College has to offer, that will allow the students to create the mentioned virtual space. Ebony Pascall, curriculum operations manager of digital, music, media, & games at Chesterfield College, said

www.s41local.com

“We feel really proud of what we did in lockdown in terms of the technology we embraced and how fast we moved online. We wanted to share our experience with other schools and colleges from across Europe. What the visitors have been really impressed with today is that we have so many support mechanisms in place; how our passionate teachers want to go out and learn new systems to be able to support students with their learning remotely and the way managers checked interactivity and engagement. The visitors were also impressed with our system of having teaching and learning quality leads to set the standards and drive staff development. This is something that they are hoping to embed in their schools. It has been really useful for us to share what we do because it has made us realise just how much we do to support our students." Three media students had a direct role within this project. They were there all week, capturing footage, which they then took with them to make a film of this first meeting of the two-year long project.

to young people in the area. Although it is worth mentioning, the courses that the college offer are available to students of all ages.

Over the past few years I have also benefited massively from international projects, and the Erasmus+ programme in particular. It has been great to be part of a project that took place in my hometown and share Chesterfield and the peak district with people from across Europe. If you're aged 18-30 and would like to find out more about the Erasmus+ programme, then have a look on www.europeers.co.uk for opportunities.

If you know of an example of how educators provided their learners with support through lockdown, in an innovative way, then please get in touch with info@cill-uk.com After the group finished their day at the college, they went for afternoon tea at No.10 tearooms. They would also like to thank Einstiens, West Bar Tandoori, Chatsworth House, Chester's, The Rectory, Pig & Pump, and The Parish Centre for their hospitality.

Paul Oxborough, Creative Director of Momentum World, said "I am really pleased that, in this project, we have something that puts Chesterfield's pin on the map." Myself, as an ex-student of the college, I am actually quite jealous of the facilities and the courses that are now available, such as the new e-sports course. It's amazing to see the college grow and offer new and exciting prospects Please Mention S41 Local

Business Intro

Intro To Heathcotes Group Words: Simon Paterson Image: Heathcotes Group

E

stablished in 2004, the Heathcotes Group has over 72 residential and supported living services across the country. Heathcotes are specialists in providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities, challenging behaviours and associated complex needs. With their head office based in Chesterfield and a fantastic new development on the verge of completion, I was keen to catch up with Natalia (Director of Business Development) to hear more.

"I am very pleased to say Brendon House is due to open in December," says Natalia. "Brendon House on Brendon Avenue is a supported living development comprised of four, self-contained apartments, built to a very high specification. We have been working alongside the Derbyshire County Council to bring this project to life and we are really looking forward to the scheme opening”.

I was born and raised in Loundsley Green and regularly visit my parents there, I can see, over the past few years that Heathcotes have been busy. "That’s right, we are also in the process of re- developing Loundsley House on Cuttholme Road into a supported living service. It will support eight individuals some time now, operating as a residential service, and this transformation means we will be able to offer people a home of their own in the heart of the community. Loundsley House will offer six en-suite bedrooms and twenty four hour care and support. It has a homely, modern feel with spacious communal areas such as the lounge, kitchen and dining room, with a lovely big garden out the back. All of our staff members are NAPPI trained (Non Abusive Physical and Psychological Interventions), where the emphasis is very much on positive behaviour support. We have worked closely with the Derbyshire County Council in relation to the redevelopment of Loundsley House, which is a really positive example of partnership working."

With Loundsley House over-looking the park and being a stone's throw away from Chesterfield Town

Centre, I can see why you chose this location. Will the new developments and facilities create opportunities and jobs for residents in the local area? "We are currently recruiting for a number of positions and have around 20 plus vacancies available. Our Head of Recruitment Jon Burton (recruitment@heathcotes.net) is on a huge recruitment drive to fill the positions. We pay staff significantly over the national minimum wage, so there are good opportunities and reasons for local people to get involved with these services right from the very beginning."

Natalia has been with Heathcotes for over six years and has been the Director of Business Development since 2019. I asked her what she enjoyed the most about her role and the Heathcotes Group? "I think it is the agile nature of our business. We are able to be really responsive to new developments to meet local commissioning need. The development in Chesterfield is a true reflection of partnership working with our local authority colleagues, and that’s exactly how we intend to approach new developments moving forward. Ultimately, these developments will provide fantastic opportunities for the people we support to build upon their level of independence in a supported living setting, and that is why I love my role." It was great chatting with Natalia, her passion for the Heathcotes developments and the positive impact on the local area was clear to see. In addition to Brendon and Loundsley House, Heathcotes also operates Pennine House; a residential service, also in Chesterfield.

HOUSEBUILDERS RESPOND TO ENERGY CRISIS WITH THOUGHTFUL INCENTIVES Words: Linden Homes

F

ollowing the recent rise in energy prices, local housebuilder Linden Homes is offering a well-timed and considered incentive designed to help buyers reduce anxieties around utility bills.

At Walton Peaks in Walton, Linden Homes is offering to pay utility bills for a year on selected homes, up to the value of £3,000.

Walton Peaks is a collection of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes located to the South-West of Chesterfield, close to the stunning Peak District.

In recent weeks, there has been an unprecedented rise in global gas prices, putting pressure on household energy suppliers and causing consumers significant concern. With potential further increases in utility bills on the horizon, Linden Homes is offering to help lift the burden from prospective home buyers of these rapidly inflating prices.

The pandemic caused the largest reduction in energy demand since World War II, leading to a drop in global gas production of over 3%. But last year’s cold winter and economies recovering quickly following the more recent easing of lockdown restrictions has led to a surge in demand. Gas markets have now reached record highs, leading to a sharp increase in home energy bills and growing fears around the cost of living this winter.

For those considering buying a new home, there are already complex sums to be done as homebuyers look to make their budget stretch as far as possible, so these fears carry even more weight. However, it is worth considering the fact that newly constructed homes are typically more energy efficient than older properties. Indeed, the Home Builders Federation has found that new homes built in England and Wales are, on average, 65% more energy efficient than a Victorian house of the same style. Double glazing, modern insulation and efficient boilers all help new-home owners keep energy usage to a minimum. Homes at Walton Peaks include two-zone heating controls, loft insulation that is significantly above regulation thickness and fully insulated cavities. Nonetheless, the energy crisis is set to continue. Indeed, experts have warned that consumers can expect another steep hike in bills in April 2022, when Ofcom’s price cap is adjusted once again. Moreover, Keith Anderson, chief executive of Scottish Power, has said Britain’s gas crisis will keep driving energy bills higher until 2023, with the potential for even well-run energy suppliers to go bust.

The Linden Homes utility bill incentive gives new homeowners peace of mind and helps alleviate these costs for*the first 12 months in their new home by giving a safety net should there be a further price cap adjustment in April 2022.

My Running Diary Part 2: Short Distance Runner to Marathon Entrant Words & Images: Jack Jerram

Page 34

www.s41local.com

I

had been inspired by an animated Anime TV (Japanese Animation) show to start running during the first Lockdown. After improving upon my initial time of 26 minutes and 43 seconds, to 16 minutes and 21 seconds covering the same route over 6 months, I was ready for a new challenge!

January 2020 and a second, more deadly wave of the coronavirus hit the UK. Positive cases were escalating and the chance of starting university lectures in person seemed as remote as Boris Johnson combing his hair! With time on my hands, I rewatched Run with the Wind and the team effort of the characters running their 12-mile sections of a marathon. Inspired, I decided that training for my own marathon would see me through the next period of isolation and dark nights.

Originally, the marathon began in Ancient Greece, the Athenians learned that the Persians had landed at the city of Marathon, a messenger called Pheidippides ran to Sparta to request help. On delivering his message, after a 26-mile run at speed, it is said that Pheidippides dropped down dead! The distance between Sparta and Marathon gave the Olympic event its name. I certainly had no intention of dying in the attempt of my next running challenge so I started googling marathon preparation. During my research, I came across the Conqueror Virtual Challenges; 18 distances that contestants can run, swim or cycle independently or, with a friend. The shortest distance on offer is the distance of the English Channel at 21 miles long and the longest is Route 66 - at an insane 2,280 miles! As a Japanese TV programme had piqued my interest in marathon running in the first place, I chose Mount Fuji - a distance of 46 miles and registered online, paying £40. I decided to rope in my friend Dec and between us we would clock up the miles.

As we progressed through the distance of our virtual challenge, we received online postcards from actual landmarks of the journey at 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% completion. One such landmark was the Narusawa Ice Cave, these online post cards added interest, motivation and a sense of scale that just couldn’t be found running by yourself. I might not have actually been there, but the immersion this challenge generated gave running a tangible goal. Get to the next checkpoint. It took 60 days to complete our journey up Mount Fuji and in an act of support, another friend joined us, by bike, on our last 3 miles. Shortly afterwards, a gold medal arrived by post along with a commemorative t-shirt and I was hooked (again)!

I decided to sign up individually for Hadrian’s Wall a distance of 90 miles - and train at the same time for a real marathon now that Boris had announced 'Freedom Day'. A professional marathon must be run in one go so I realised that I needed a greater injection of stamina! Mum knew a personal trainer, Rebecca Thomas, and put me in touch.

Rebecca met me on the running track at Queen’s Park, one hot afternoon in May and put me through my paces. A baseline assessment was made and from there a training plan was devised. I continued to meet her once a week throughout the summer – sometimes on the track and sometimes in her converted garage in Walton, furnished with a variety of the latest exercise equipment. Each week, Rebecca emailed me exercises to raise my fitness levels and I invested in my own additional equipment: a 10kg weight and skipping rope. It took some practise and a few choice words to master the skipping – something I had only attempted once a year on Sports Day as a kid, but within a few days, I was skipping like Rocky Balboa! Rebecca kept me focused; it felt like a joint effort and doubled my motivation. I now had a marathon booked, the 5K Run Alton Towers, and was clocking up miles on my Hadrian’s Wall Challenge.

By September, I’d begun my second year at university and finally got to meet some of the other students on my course! I made the university badminton team, which I felt was a direct result of my increased fitness – friends I had played of equal ability the year before, I was beating decisively.

I was now a long way off the unfit, sluggish, fastfood lover I had been when Lockdown began. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good takeaway now and then but I regulate it with a regular fitness regime and the mental health benefits are long lasting including improved sleep and mood. As this article goes to press, I will have completed both a virtual and actual marathon. A goal I never thought I could accomplish, all starting with a simple animated film which asked, “what does it feel like to run with the wind? I think if I keep running and one day I’ll find an answer.” From that moment I wanted to know that feeling too.

Read my next article for a planned route to rekindle your love of running or kick-start it. If you mention S40/S41 Local and this article to Rebecca Thomas of Thomas Personal Coaching, she will give you a free initial consultation – I highly recommend it.

Coping with change Words: Philip Norcliffe - Handle with care Seniors Image: Adobe

T

he changes that come about as we age, is, barring serious illness or injury, slow and develops almost without noticing.

These are a mixture physical, psychological and social changes. The good news is that most of us, we have inbuilt, spare capacity which absorbs much of the reduction in physical capacity. We build up some psychological resilience due to experiences which occur over the years and a natural inbuilt brain reserve. If we are blessed with family and friends to meet our social needs, old age can be achieved through a graceful transition. Sudden illness or injury with or without hospitalisation tilts us into sudden changes, from which it can be hard to recover. This brief article is designed to help put the changes into perspective and enable recovery by harnessing that hard won resilience we have developed over a lifetime

Illness, and particularly hospitalisation can result in a loss of independence, and the return home can be daunting to both you and your family. In my experience as a nurse people are desperate to ‘get home’. Frailties and fatigue that have come about will need to be overcome. Help is available but you will need to ask for it, either yourself or through a family member. Please do not be too proud, there are excellent carers to help. (We train hundreds of them every year.) The main route to recovery is through your recognition of your potential, enlisting support as required to achieve as much as possible through determination and asserting your choice.

You will have built up routines over years as a coping strategy to regularise your life. It is important to re-establish your routines to fit in with what you want. Every attempt should be made by the care givers to help you re-establish routines, minimising the disruption brought about by your illness or injury. Your spirited contribution to achieving your potential is welcomed by family and carers alike. From a nurse’s / carer’s perspective, working in harness with the individual and family concerned is the key to a successful recovery, it is much appreciated and an enjoyable aspect of the job. Hospitalisation will have robbed you of strength and stamina. Page 36

You need to rest and recuperate, re-establish your naps and bedtime routine to build strength and resilience back. Some suggestions to get you safely back on your feet.

• Your safety is of the utmost importance, the care provider will do an assessment of risk • Take your time when carrying out tasks

• Check your footwear for comfort and security of fit Your clothing should allow for freedom of movement and comfort, ease of access and warmth,( you will not generate as much body heat) • Mentally plan and prepare yourself and others before starting

• Co-ordinate any assistance you receive with the person assisting you

• Tap your feet before standing. This will loosen up joints, warm muscles, aid your circulation and allow the nervous system to “wake up” • Pace yourself, do not rush

• Plan frequent stops if necessary

• If you have new glasses or eye drops, take special care, ask for advice

• Have your hearing checked hearing impairment is a major cause of falls • If you have a stick or frame use it

• Plan the route you are to take. Look out for obstacles, such as rugs, shadows, or changes in carpet colour give eyes time to adjust. Good lighting without glare, is essential

• Get up from lying flat to sitting and from sitting to standing slowly and in stages, particularly if on tablets, ask you pharmacist or doctor. On standing, stay by your chair until any feelings of light-headedness pass. Philip - Handle with Care Seniors Tel: 01246 557799 Hollingwood Community Room Lanburnum Street, Hollingwood S43 2JL

Garden Tips

WINTER GARDENING TIPS Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts

Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil.

It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too.

Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose Super Aquadulce, a hardy variety. A greenhouse or window sill can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow seeds for peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions.

This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space.

Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost, but don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.

Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.

Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. CFC Fancy a double? Words & Images: Michael South Hello again my fellow Spireites.

Following last month's article things are going well and we are still on track to be promoted back to the league two of football. Even though however, we have some serious issues in the old injuries department at the squad, defence mainly, we keep marching on. Gunning is now out for a while with his broken face which he picked up during the victory against Eastleigh. Despite other defensive injuries, with Laurence Maguire, Haydn Hollis and George Carline, we are still heading in the right direction thankfully. Now, the bright side. You may have heard that Chesterfield Football Club has actually secured their place in the second round of the FA Cup destroying Southend United 3-1 at home last weekend (or a few weeks ago by the time you read this). We normally crash out at the first round or not even qualify for it since we sunk to the National League, so to be in the next round is a top feeling. Shame we aren't at home for it but I'm sure we'll beat Salford to reach the 3rd round to play Man City at home! Judging by the team spirit and attitude during the injury crisis, the club clearly wanna get as far as possible in the FA cup. I actually have a genuine feeling we will get past the Page 48

3rd round this season and show the general footballing public what we are capable of. Watch the Tshimanga goal against Southend back on YouTube, it was amazing to see. Especially as he'd only just been substituted on to the field. And as I keep banging on about, it's all down to the boss James Rowe. So much so, a month or so earlier, Southend even tried to poach James Rowe away from us to improve their own position. Obviously he remains firmly committed to the cause of the master plan at CFC. What more does he want? A young manager with the board's backing, in my opinion he is all set up to become a historical manager for the club and the town of Chesterfield. The young CFC fans of today who come to watch the home games now with the their mates or with family, will hopefully be telling their own kids what it was like to witness Rowes squad play at the ground. He's already notched up over 50 games under his belt for us and he will no doubt deliver the promotion to the fans back to the footballing leagues. Well he best do or I will look a bit daft. Technically speaking, we are currently on course for the league and cup double. That's the beauty of the FA cup. The normal rules of football don't apply, so let's just take a moment here to imagine that. www.s41local.com

... Anyway (click of fingers), back to the present. We currently sit 3rd in the table just a single point below leaders Boreham Woods and level on points with Grimsby. We have a less than fit squad but we are still looking good. The fact that we sign quick loanees to plug the gaps is again credit to the club's presence in the National League and to Rowe. James signed defender Luke Croll from Dag & Redbridge on a shortterm deal to fill in for Gunning. And you know what, he even scored on his debut after just 14 minutes!

Tshimanga too continues to bag the goals, netting his 12th goal in 14 league games. Currently the leading goal scorer in the league at the time of writing but I'd bet my last 50p that by the time you read this, he's scored even more! What a beautiful feeling to have. Seriously if you haven't been to see the guy play yet, get down to the stadium at a weekend to witness him...and the team play. You will not be disappointed. So, come the 15th May against Woking at the last game of the season you will be there, to see us lift the trophy.

Remember, That's keep the faith Spireites! COYBs!!!
