Hello and welcome to our April edition.
Finally, the sun is shining, the tempreature is rising and by the end of the week I may be able to take my hat and dressing gown off in the house. Florie (age 4) made an excellent observation recently:
“Daddy never gets dressed.”
This is not entirely true, but I have spent a disproportionate amount of time in my fluffy Star Wars pyjamas and dressing gown. I regret nothing!
Speaking of Florie, she turns five next week. She has been going on and on about her birthday since Christmas finished. Apparently, turning five is a big deal. Wait till you turn forty kid!
Happy birthday kiddo. Daddy loves you.
This month's front cover sees the return of Sue Dickins. Sue’s exhibition ‘Women United’ is at West Studios from the 17th to the 28th of April. It was lovely to bump into some of our readers at Sue’s last showcase. Their kind words meant a lot. Sue went on to sell several pieces to our readers. Amazing!
I popped into the Star Inn on Chatsworth Road recently following its recent transformation and was more than pleasantly surprised. You can read all about it in this edition. Jess Draper joined us on work experience and has written a wonderful piece on her travels to Cape Verde and helping at a Dog Rescue Centre. She’s a good girl!
The wordsmith that is Ed of Brockwell Books is back and has a very unique prize to giveaway to one of our lucky readers. I bet you can’t guess what it is?
Some of you kindly sent your fun in the snow pictures to me following the rather generous flurry we had the other week. Some of the images are belters. You can’t help but think the person on the skis has been waiting for this their entire lives!
Michael South has once again has gone the extra mile working on his CFC pages over the weekend so we can bring you the latest from the club. Superstar!
A big thanks to Lee (The Window People) and Lukasz (Local Home Improvements) for doing such wonderul jobs on our home. Both of whom are featured in this edition.
Have a wonderful start to your spring everyone.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy creating it.
Peace, love and positivity

Women United
An exhibition by Sue DickinsWords & Images: Sue Dickins
Just thought I’d send you a few of my latest paintings that are ready for my second solo exhibition, Women United. The opening evening is Sat 15th April so I'm working hard to be ready in time!
The idea to paint women from around the world wearing traditional dress came to me last year during my first exhibition. I found that I had developed a newfound interest in painting fabric with my models who had modelled for me for my first collection, and as I love figurative work I decided to combine the two.
I already had several friends from different parts of the world who now live here in the UK with us; they have all been extremely supportive and have modelled for me wearing traditional dress where possible. Ines who worked at West Studios for example was my French representative, modelling a wonderful bright red beret. I took photos of her on a bright sunny morning in Westwood. She is such a beautiful person inside and out, I just had to ask her if she would help with my idea, she was delighted! I also have a Polish friend, Marzenna, who modelled a vibrant Polish traditional shawl.
I visited London recently to meet a wonderful lady from the Philippines. She was home for a short time last year and brought back some traditional dresses especially for this project.
During my first exhibition, 'This Woman’s Work', I met a young woman, Alex. We became good friends and I meet up with her quite often in The Hub at Chesterfield. She has been on a incredible journey after being desperately ill and inspires me so much.
I asked her if she would like to be part of this and she said yes. We had a lovely morning at Bolsover Castle, what better place than an English Heritage site and a proper English girl! As we entered the Star Chamber, I knew I’d found the perfect location as she gazed through one of the windows; she looked like a princess. The painting that I did of her is being used as my advert. I wanted to give her back some confidence which I’m delighted to say, it did.
I’m hoping this exhibition will again bring people together and hopefully be an exciting experience. All the new works are large, some a meter high, and are very bright and bold.
I read a quote saying 'we all look at the same stars, it’s how we see them that’s different', I’ve kept this thought in mind as I’ve met new friends from all over the world. Yes, we may be from different cultures and have different colour skin, but we are all human and should be treated equally.
I keep popping into see Joby at West Studios as he has also become a good friend and has continually offered his help and support! I’m doing a portrait of him as a Thank you!
Women United Monday 17 to Friday 28 April 2023 10am to 4pm West Studios, Sheffield Road, S41 7LL

The Star Inn
Start your mile in style!
Words: Simon Paterson
Images: Spire Inns
Having been a Brampton resident for a while now, I thought it was high-time that I visited the newly refurbished Star Inn on Chatsworth Road.
As you approach the pub it's clear to see the time and work that the new team (Jason and Mone - Spire Inns) have invested in the place. A traditional look with a sign outside that reminds me of my younger days
'Start your mile in style.'
Many a Saturday night was spent attempting the Brampton Mile, but I do not recall ever finishing it, fancy that!
Entering the pub, I was greeted with a warm smile by a member of the team and a fresh, familiar decor. Whether it's a rural countryside inn or a newly refurbished bar, a great pub should feel like a... well... a pub! Woody, welcoming, warm and muted in its decor with its original features standing front and centre. The Star Inn is all of this and so much more.
Eager to know more about the new Star Inn I conversed/grilled two of the team members on duty that evening (Mone and Molly) over a pint of Theakston's Best.
Molly is a local lass who has been working at the pub since it reopened last summer. I asked her what she likes best about working at the Star. "I love it here because we have such a good laugh, all the locals are so lovely and it's just a great place to work. I've been working here for quite a while now and can't see that changing anytime soon."
Mone has worked and ran more pubs than I've had pints, she added. "We have an older clientele here, it's a local pub for local people, which sounds a bit cliché, but it is. If you are looking for a relaxing evening and a quiet drink, you should give us a try. Our SMART Quiz nights start on Wednesday 22 February which is something a bit different and modern, and we have some great live acts lined up including singer song writer Lexi Whiteside. "Jason (Spire Inns) does a great karaoke on a Friday night," says Molly.
The Star Inn are very open to community groups getting in touch should they need a base for meetings and regular events. If anyone wants to start a beer and board games night you can count me in! "We used to have a darts and dominoes team, so if anyone wants to start anything up then pop in and we will do our best to support and promote it," smiles Mone.
I moved on to the most important question of all. What drinks do you have on offer? "We have a variety of drinks including Carling, Beaver Town Neck Oil, Birra Moretti, John Smiths and two continuous ales on, usually a blonde and an amber," says Molly.
For the sports fans amongst us, the Star has several screens inside showing Sky Sports and BT Sports, with all the major sporting events on throughout the calendar year.
For the darts enthusiasts the pub has a brand-new Blade 6 dart board on the wall with ample space to throw a few.
I saved the big question till last. Why do you think people, old and new to the area should come and give the new look Star Inn a try? "Because it's warm and friendly with a nice atmosphere. We are dog friendly which it has never been before and best of all you get to spend time with our wonderful, local team," beams Mone. Well, you can't argue with that. I for one will be back soon and if you are lucky, I may treat you to my best Michael Bublé on the Karaoke!

Rescue Dogs From Cape Verde to Chesterfield
Words: Jess Draper
Images: Jess & Adobe Stock
Jess Draper joined the team at S40 Local for a few days on work experience recently and one of the jobs we gave her was to put an article together about something she enjoys. What follows is a rather unusual holiday activity!
Last August, for our summer holiday
I was lucky enough to go to the beautiful island of Sal in Cape Verde. Something peculiar about this island is that unlike Cyprus, which is filled with stray cats, Sal is filled with semi-
wild dogs. Being someone who believes that there is only one correct answer to “Are you a dog person or a cat person?” this delighted me. No matter where you went on the island there was at least one dog either roaming down the street, or asleep under a sunbed.
Whilst there I didn’t meet a vicious dog, although many were cautious of humans, all the dogs I met, although wild, were friendly and merely longing for love. Not only did seeing these dogs help with the extreme longing I felt for my two fur babies at home, Ted and Poppy, but it also, in a way, made my holiday, being able to see a dog no matter where I went!
Although this island does sound like heaven for many dog lovers (like me), due to the impoverished nature of the country of Cape Verde, many of these dogs are malnourished and/or require veterinary care, this breaks my heart. Therefore, my mum and I decided to try to help. So, for one day of our holiday, we decided to venture away from the buffet, swap our bikinis for actual clothes and go and help at Organização Salense Proteção Animais (OSPA). OSPA is a non-profit organisation in Sal that gives shelter, food, warmth, and play for many of the stray dogs in Cape Verde. The charity’s aim is to find forever homes for their dogs, with families who have the capability to properly home and take care of one of these dogs.
When we arrived, we met the dogs, all of them eager to be cuddled and fussed. After making sure we spoke to every single dog we took two Rosie and Oito, out for a walk. Rosie and Oito are two black and white sisters that had been found by the charity as puppies, in a box that had been abandoned in the centre of Sal. They were extremely excited to be given the luxury of a quick walk (that many of our pet dogs at home receive daily). They ran and played, like it was the best day of their lives, jumping up for hugs and strokes along the way. You wouldn’t believe that these dogs were once abandoned puppies, considering how tame and friendly they both were. After 45 minutes or so, we were reluctant to take them back to their home, I believe we would’ve rather had them stay with us in our hotel room, or better, to have bought them back home with us. But reluctantly, we took them back to the rest of their friends.
That day of helping was one for the best days of my holiday. I loved helping those wonderful dogs who should never have been
on the streets, even if it was only a small part I played. I also simply loved visiting the shelter, they work to do as much as they can, helping as many street dogs as possible. Without this shelter, it is heartbreaking to think that so many more innocent dogs would be injured and fighting for food to survive. I just want to mention my great gratitude for OSPA for helping.
If you're inspired to get involved or adopt a rescue animal locally there are a number of organisations who can help, see below.

Rediscover Chesterfield
Words: Paul Chapman

Chesterfield is being recognised as a destination for independence... a place to visit for it's independent businesses.
Our high street, Chatsworth Road and Sheffield Road, are doing well, with new and exciting ventures popping up all the time. Despite the odd negative comment on social media, Chesterfield remains a positive place with lots to offer its residents and visitors.
Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk is the place to go to find over 200 independent businesses based in and around Chesterfield, that are delivering excellence and experiences that keep people coming back, time and time again.
When I was younger, our weekends were filled just doing everyday tasks, shopping, visiting the bank, sorting out your insurance, and you only had the one day, everywhere was closed on Sunday... Today we have the internet, we can now spend every night doing tasks online, when I was a teenager it didn't exist!
We talk about the web being quicker and more convenient, am I the only one that feels this has been mis-sold?
If it's all so quick and convenient why does it seem to take over my life, and sorting out a problem that occurs can soak up whole days! I find the online experience a bit soulless, not to mention
the carbon footprint of all the individual deliveries being driven around, personally it all feels a bit wrong!
I'm not a complete evangelist, I order stuff from the web but I try and reserve it for things I can't get locally or over the counter, I try not to use it for everyday stuff. I like the opportunity to browse, to try things on, to talk to knowledgeable people who can help, not some AI generated BOT at the bottom of my screen.
I like to walk away with what I want there and then, ideally purchased from an independent business, do my bit to support the local economy. I'm not the world's best shopper, if I'm out browsing, I'm looking for something in particular, or coffee and food!
Chesterfield has a fab range of independent businesses, find yourself some time, pop into town and give them some support... the more we do this, the more it will encourage new businesses to open up.
Be sure to take a browse of the Unhampered website (www.unhampered-chesterfield.co.uk) before you go to help plan out your day and find something new..
But most of all, enjoy, and keep supporting the town in which you live.

REDISCOVER CHESTERFIELD
Something special
Words: Ed FordhamThere is something special about giving a book as a gift - it’s the sense of giving an object that will hold its emotional value, that you chose it specifically. Some people write in their books, others don’t and won’t. But, of old books the ones we often like and appreciate the most are those with inscriptions in them.
A lady came past the shop the other day and handed me a small pamphlet of a book - a collection of English poems. It’s an old schoolbook, the type used in Victorian schoolrooms to teach and learn poetry - specifically English poetry. The book has virtually no value but is quaint and nice to the touch and it sits warmly in your hand.
As she handed it to me I opened it and saw the inscription - the name of the previous owner and the date 1886. As I paused to appreciate the attractive ink handwriting - the lady said - “I knew her” - pointing at the name - “she was lovely, and I didn’t want the book to end up in a skip”.
Here was I holding a book that spanned almost 140 years of two women who knew each other and between whom this book had passed - the least I could do was respect that. I promised the lady it would not go in a skip and have put it to one side. For me, interactions such as this is what a secondhand book shop is all about. There are few books that have to go in a skip - and we pride ourselves on repurposing. Old redundant atlases are now made into map bags, we have wall-papered part of our own house with a broken copy of Lord of the Rings, and we have a scheme to make postcards and book marks out of broken books.
And of course, you can buy these books and more and give them second and third lives. The covers may not be perfect, the condition may not be immaculate - but the collected story and journey that those books have themselves had, gives us joy and wonder.
If you love books, have a friend whom you haven’t seen for a while, want a gift that is unlikely, fun and even a bit different - we can help. We are the ultimate shop for all-year-round secret-Santa’s. Please don’t leave it to Christmas - we need your help and support all year around to make this business venture work, so call in any time.
We are open on Chesterfield’s Market DaysMonday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays broadly 9am-4pm. Please do find time to come and browse.
And as for that poetry book - we are pleased to say that poetry is probably our biggest line of sale. Your love and exploration of the craft and curated word is huge. And we ourselves are huge advocates of John Clare, John Donne and Carol Ann Duffy to name but three. We are huge fans of local poet Helen Mort and hope to have exciting news for the town about that soon.
So that little poetry book is going into a lucky draw - if you like poetry or old previously loved books - pop into the shop - place your name and phone number into our March draw and one of you will win the poetry book with our compliments. Our one request is that you love it and keep it out of the skip for someone else to enjoy.
See you soon, Ed Fordham, Proprietor.
Brockwell Books of Chesterfield can be found in The Market Hall, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 1AR.

APRIL GARDEN TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
It should be properly spring and noticeably warmer by the time you read this. We've had a generally mild winter where lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators and more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus.
If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes. They are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most types are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero.
Lots of vegetables (and many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go directly into the soil, but that may depend on if you've had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil.
If you're not confident about growing things from seed, many seedlings will be sold in garden centres. These will have been raised in a benign environment. They won't appreciate going straight outside, especially if it's chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don't keep them in a heated house.
Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover: tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. If they need watering, it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the soil's surface appears damp; spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres, but they can be pretty expensive for what you get, plus it's far more satisfying to grow things from scratch.
If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year, now is the time to save space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops an excellent start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month.
Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can't produce enough or haven't got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertilisers spread around above where their roots will be and gently forked in – don't overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser.
As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth sprouts. If you have fruit trees or shrubs, their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will, to some extent, provide their own micro-climate, so they will only suffer minor damage (depending on the severity of the frost) and can be left to take their chances.
Lawns should be growing faster now, so they may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first and rake the surface. Protect any newly sown areas from pigeons.
There isn't a month when you shouldn't be weeding, but it's much more important if the weather is mild!

Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Well, what an up and down, roller coaster of a month it's been for the old emotions. What happened? Let's have a closer look.
New signings
After Ryan Colclough joined the Spireites following Tshimangas departure. Cookie then also signed two additional strikers, Paul McCallum from Dag & Red and Andrew Dallas from Solihull. The fresh blood seems to be finally adding to the promotion push.
Recap
17th January was the day it all went south, at the West Bromwich FA Cup replay defeat. Before this, we were scoring left right and centre, from all over the park. Jeff King was our top scorer for a while. Chesterfield even held the Championship side to a 3-3 draw. There were countless players on town's scoresheet up until that point of the season. But then things dried up. Things are on the mend now though. Just in time to still aim for that 3rd place playoff spot though? We can kiss goodbye to automatic promotion or even finishing second.
Yes, new signing Colclough is starting to find the back of the net with 4 goals in 6 now, but the previous contributors have all stalled.
The big question, given the last 6 weeks or so, was why? Was it due to confidence levels dropping from the 4-0 exit from the cup? Did Cook lose the dressing room? Issues behind the scenes? Or is it just a few bad weeks at the office? We don't know. What we do know is, fans were not happy. Social media was doing what social media does and caused many heated debates between fans. What is certain though is Paul Cook's determination to get us back into the football league. When Cookie does speak to the press he does speak from the heart and in my view that's good. He's as honest as the day is long. He's been here now for just over a year and I still think he's the right guy for the job. Funny, no one was critical of him when we went on our unbeaten runs before the 3rd round exit were they?
Between 24th Jan and 4th March, the Spireites didn't win a game, only scoring 6 goals.
Within that time came the two games against Deadpool FC and Notts County. We lost both 2-1 but the Notts Co game, now that was an entertaining home tie!
Put simply, Dobra did his best to wind up the travelling fans.
Naturally, that didn't go down well, well not as easily as Dobra himself did anyway. But having come off the bench Dobra did in fact get on the scoresheet. Oh, and King was sent off. Despite all that - “It would be the proudest day of my life to take this club back in the Football League” - Paul Cook said in the post match interview. And against Gateshead we turned the corner, just. Just like the Wrexham game Colclough scored in injury time to steal the win, and his second Spireite goal. Then 3 days later he claimed his 3rd goal and the winner, against Southend Utd. Both away wins too. But the following home tie against Yeovil we only managed a 1-1 draw from McCullum's penalty straight down the middle. At least this game got played as this was the weekend the snow came, and the frost covers saved the day as well as the amazing volunteers clearing the white stuff to get the game on!
Next came the Wealdstone 4-0 win. No that's not a typo it really was a 4 nil away win! With 4 different goal-scorers too. This hasn't happened for months.
McCallum, Mandeville, Dallas (first Spireite goal) and then Ryan Colclough chipped in the game's fourth, for his 4th goal.
At the time of writing, we have just played away at Woking and won 1-0 with a Banks' 37th min penalty. An important 3 points and a clean sheet. So, with only 8 games remaining let's consider the remaining season.
The playoffs
Currently, our 5 playoff opponents are Woking, Barnet, Boreham Wood, Eastleigh and Notts County. Personally (woke readers close your eyes here) given the 2 horse race for the automatic promotion spot between Deadpool FC and Notts County, I can't see any other teams getting promoted this season. Yes, I understand the playoff games are like the early rounds of the FA Cup where anything is possible. But look at their consistent form. Currently 91 and 90 points apiece with 8 games left to play. And yes, I hear you now saying "last season's playoff winners were Grimsby who finished 6th in the league" but, I just have a feeling they'll both be in League 2 next season. Anyway, regardless of my opinion we shall see what occurs in the coming weeks, but I hope the Spireites prove me wrong.
