Editors letter

Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of S41 Local Magazine. At the time of writing this, it is 28 degrees outside in September, maybe summer was delayed at the airport, I hope so!

As a family we have had another wonderful summer, made memories, and spent a fortune on hourly snacks for the kids!

We intentionally chose to limit our travels within the UK and discover new destinations with the kids. As a result, we spent time in Pickering, York, Whitby, Llandudno, and Colwyn Bay, each of which offered its own fantastic experiences, and we look forward to future trips around the Great British Isles; if only we could afford a campervan!

The six-week holidays always seem to fly by, but it's nice to return to our routines and start gearing up for the excitement of Halloween and Christmas. I can't believe we only have two editions left until 2024!

Chesterfield has been a hive of activity this summer with Eat in the Park, The Children’s Festival, Unhampered Live and Peddler Market added to the line-up. I particularly enjoyed Peddler as I like eating food! Don’t miss their second visit on September 15th.

This month's featured front cover artist, Tom J Newell, happens to be an old school friend of mine. We shared numerous memorable moments together in the 90s, and I'm eager for you to delve into our conversation inside. It must have been over two decades since we last sat down and shared a drink together. The Fiver Fest is back, but due to inflation, it is now called Magic Tenner! Lots of local, indie businesses taking part with some generous offers inside.

Tallbird Records is celebrating its remarkable ten-year anniversary, a significant milestone for the team. Inside, you can delve into Maria and her team's journey. I’ll sign off now. I hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as I enjoy creating it.

Peace, love, and positivity, Simon, Bekah, Eva, and Florie

Tom J Newell

The cool kid from school

Words: Simon Paterson

Sat outside Bragazzis on Abbbeydale Road in Sheffield Tom rides past on his old racer bicycle and I am instantly transported back in time...

It's 1996, and we find ourselves in Peabody's bedroom (big shoutout to Paul and Carole for being the coolest parents around). Gathered are a bunch of us, soaking in the laid-back vibes. Jake strums the chords of Wonderwall on his acoustic guitar, and Pea leads the singalong for what feels like the hundredth rendition. MTV2 is on the TV and the Wu Tang Clan’s seminal track C.R.E.A.M. plays on mute. Leigh cracks open a can of Fosters, meanwhile, Tom idly doodles on the bed, lost in his own creative world.

If you had told a 16-year-old Tom, sitting there in his Vans, watching the Wu-Tang Clan, that one day he would be creating art for them, he would have burst out laughing.

We are just a bunch of teenagers, united in our mission to postpone the inevitable march into adulthood. Little did we realise, those were the days when life was at its purest. It was a time of simplicity, a time of contentment, it was our time.

As the year progressed, we would soon embark on our individual journeys. College, jobs, and relationships began to shape our lives, causing the tight bonds we shared to gradually loosen. The unavoidable responsibilities of adulthood started to exert their influence, nudging us in different directions. Slowly and sadly, we drifted apart... Jump ahead 25 years, and here I am, an editor for a magazine, catching up with my longtime friend Tom. Our conversation revolves around his art, music, and influences. The joy is flowing as I express my anticipation to showcase his work on the front cover of S41 Local Magazine. A postcode that holds countless memories of the time we spent together.

“I remember Peabody had MTV2 which was amazing because I didn’t have it at home. Our time as teenagers wasn’t wasted as it was spent absorbing all sorts of music and watching cult movies,” says Tom.

This was a time before the internet when you had to use analogue methods of finding new music, art and movies.

“Spire News and Hudson’s Records were like portals to the rest of the world. Generally, Spire News wouldn’t kick you out for looking and not buying. To be able to go into Spire News and just look at music and skateboarding magazines was amazing, it was our internet, our window to the world outside of Chesterfield,” reminisces Tom. I asked Tom how he feels music has shaped his art with it playing such a huge role in life?

“It’s hard to separate the two, to me they are one entity that feeds off each other. I listen to music when I am drawing and often, I am drawing for a musician. I DJ and collect records so the two are just one to me,” smiles Tom.

Tom studied fine art at Chesterfield College to further develop his skills as an artist, enabling him to find his own style and direction in the industry.

“I learnt a lot studying fine art and the resources available to me at the College were unbelievable, but my passion project was creating gig posters for the bands I was in and my friends' bands. Eventually, your client base gets a bit bigger, they pass on a poster to a touring band, and it builds from there."

Tom is a little modest when it comes to name dropping, but I am more than happy to do it for him. Amongst his clients are: The Wu Tang Clan, The Sleaford Mods, Vans, Erykah Badu and the Tramlines Festival.

“Daniel Johnston is one of my most memorable, early, clients. He is cited as one of Kurt Cobain's (Nirvana) major influences and was my first big poster gig. I ended up signing prints with him backstage. It was an amazingly, bizarre, experience,” says Tom.

Tom and I spent a lot of our time on Pottery Lane West and Salisbury Crescent as teenagers. Leigh and Pea’s parents were very liberal, and our hometown’s ‘grebo’ (old term for alternative teens) scene helped shape Tom’s art.

“Chesterfield is a Mecca for liberal parents, there's a lot of them. There is a generation of cool people who settled in Chesterfield. We had a cool music scene as well. Weekends were all about the Green Room. I had a hip-hop night there which I created some of my very first posters for,” says Tom.

You would be hard-pressed to drive anywhere in Sheffield and not see some of Tom’s art adorning the walls of the outdoor city. The Bear and Elephant sculptures he created for the Sheffield art trails are two of his most iconic pieces. Both were sold at auction with the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital. The Bear and Elephant stand tall in Bear Tree Records and The Great Gatsby and are a must-see on your next visit to Sheffield. Sadly, Tom has yet to create a mural for his hometown. CBC if you are reading this... I’ll post you a copy!

I asked him if he could create a mural on any building in Chesterfield of anything what would it be and where?

“I guess I would try not to do the Crooked Spire! I suppose it is like doing Henderson’s relish in Sheffield. I could do a teenage me looking at magazines on the side of Spire News, haha!

Cheese Factor cobs are quite iconic, or I could do the ‘pound a bag’ man,” smiles Tom.

Like many Cestrefeldian’s I've been to Tramlines Festival in Sheffield over the year and Tom has worked with them, (almost), from the very start.

“The 'Be More Nulty' artwork came about because of me expressing sadness at Sarah’s passing (Sarah Nulty – Tramlines creator). I drew the heart with the slogan 'Be More Nulty' in it and posted it online as a tribute. The remaining organisers wanted to buy it, but I gave it them for free. I am now on the board of the Sarah Nulty Power of Music charity which does magnificent work in the industry,” says Tom, proudly.

'No worries if not' is a quintessentially British phrase that we often employ when we're secretly hoping for someone's assistance. Tom's artwork, featuring a skeleton giving a thumbs-up while submerging, captures this sentiment flawlessly. While some of his pieces may be interpreted as dark, a closer look reveals that positive narratives are a recurring thread throughout his work.

"The skeleton shedding tears that nourish the flowers is undoubtedly one of my top sellers," Tom explains. "Requests for prints of that piece keep coming. What might appear melancholic at first carries a positive message underneath," he adds.

So, what’s next for Tom. J. Newell?

“I am currently working on skateboard designs, gig posters, some more stuff with the Sleaford Mods and today I am working on a project in the Picture House Social, where I DJ once a month on a Saturday night. Although, having two young boys and working late nights is a bit out of my comfort zone now,” says Tom.

“Oh... how we have changed,” I reply.

Head over to Tom's website and socials, where you'll find a diverse range of prints, mini canvases, and detailed information on his limited edition T-shirt prints.

n email arrived in August from Maria at Tallbird Records - she was inviting us to help her celebrate 10 years of Tallbird Records! Well, we couldn’t say no could we, and met up at Libby's for a coffee and to find out a little more about the origins of Tallbird Records and life as a small independent business owner for ten years.

“My route to Tallbird Records is a long one but it was after I’d spent time as a stay-at-home mum that the shop became a reality, I was ready to work again and doing something I enjoy was the top priority’” explains Maria.

“My first job was in Richard’s Records in Canterbury, after a while I moved to London and worked part-time in Beggars Banquet in KingstonUpon-Thames, a record shop that has since grown to legendary status and shortened its name to Banquet Records.

right in the middle of town was close enough. The landlord was supportive, the bank manager slightly bemused that there was still a market for records!” The gap in the market and the resurgence that was happening in vinyl was perfect timing for Maria and all that was needed now was a name! It involved many sketches and brainstorming, plus a bit of creative support from Dad and Tallbird Records started to become a reality.

“I opened selling a small rack of new vinyl and the rest was second hand. These were the days when you could still purchase a job lot of albums from ebay for reasonable prices.

“I wanted to ensure I had enough stock and could pay the rent and bills from day one. I was blown away by the response when we opened. The first sale of a used copy of David Bowie's, ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ confirmed the great taste of Chesterfield’s music lovers and I did get excited when I saw the first day's takings, but soon came to realise that this wasn't going to happen every day!”

Now ten years on, the sales floor has doubled in size, the basement is full of used stock to bring upstairs, and sales are still good, with new vinyl accounting for around 50% of sales and 75% of takings.

“I ended up managing Alto in Carnaby Street which was part of a chain selling CDs and videos (now long gone) and then moved to Virgin Retail as a product manager. This role exposed me to all sorts of exciting work opportunities, such as helping to set up Virgin Megastores around the country (including the one in Sheffield). I ended up working for Virgin Cinemas managing their merchandise stores and food offering including a very short-lived fish restaurant at the Sheffield branch, and much more besides. This role equipped me with a variety of new skills.” Maria moved to Chesterfield in 2006 and whilst bringing up the kids bought and sold music online. Once the kids got more independent, she was on the lookout for a new challenge.

“Chesterfield had lost both its music shops by now, Hudsons and then HMV. I always reckoned that if Hudsons could have hung on a bit longer they would have outlasted HMV.

“Every time we walked around town, I’d comment that this or that location would make a perfect records shop and it just happened that we walked past what is now our Soresby Street premises and I plucked up the courage to phone the contact number in the window.

“I loved the feel of the place, it was about the right size, on an old, cobbled street and although not

I asked why Maria thought people have moved back to vinyl? “I think it’s nostalgia for many,” she suggested. “Many customers are middle aged or older, wanting to reconnect with their youth and the excitement of going into a record shop to buy the latest releases. I don’t think people ever got the same connection to CD’s; they’re just not as appealing as a product to get excited over.

“Vinyl is obviously analogue and arguably sounds better than digital CDs, plus some research suggests that analogue sound (and therefore vinyl) is good for your health because your brain doesn't have to work so hard to fill in the gaps of digitised music which is made up of 0s and 1s! The artwork, inner sleeves, gatefolds, colour vinyl etc all create interest and allow you to own something engaging and collectible.

“Of course, we also have many younger customers too. A part of the whole vinyl revival was the hipness factor, it was enough just to own a record. You just had to be seen with it, and many records were bought by people who had no ability to listen to them.

“These days owing to factors such as the pandemic there has unfortunately been big increases in price on a lot of new vinyl. What was once an affordable treat is now more of a luxury purchase. I’ve seen recently that many of our

A

Page 11 Please Mention S41 Local

younger customers are starting to turn to CDs which we also stock - they want to support the acts they love by buying and owning their releases and not just streaming them. Taylor Swift still sells in huge numbers, but a £12 CD is more affordable than a £40 album.

“Streaming still leads the way for new music,” says Maria. “I listen to Spotify's new music on Mondays, this was how I found Wet Leg before they hit the spotlight. They are my new favourite band - it takes a lot to catch my attention, but I think they have the formula just right, their look and personality bring the whole package together so well.”

Maria's tastes are grounded in the late 70s and early 80s, starting with the Osmonds and the Bay City Rollers when she was a teeny bopper and progressing to punk, new wave and indie as her taste in music improved and Blondie is her all-time favourite band

Maria is very supportive of local artists, Lewis Young (My Pleasure) performed in store over the first Peddler Market weekend, it was a most memorable performance, I was there and look forward to seeing My Pleasure again at some point soon.

Check out the promotions opposite to help celebrate 10 years of Tallbird Records and if you love your music or know someone who does, be sure to call in and check out Tallbird Records, one of town's best loved independent businesses.

Check the website for opening hours as these are soon to be extended. There's also a generous loyalty card scheme, plenty of cheap new vinyl offers, many of the new and latest new releases on vinyl and CD and a great range of second-hand vinyl, CDs and even cassettes, what's not to like?!! Oh, and they are open on Records Fair Sundays 10am - 2pm, typically the second Sunday of every month.

One last question for Maria. Are there any records you're still searching for yourself? “I collect Blondie 7” singles and although I've got over 140 of them from all around the world, there are still one or two which are eluding me! They're the ultra-rare, crazy expensive ones from places like Uruguay and Thailand though, so chances of them ever turning up in town are slim to say the least...”

Happy tenth birthday Tallbird Records.

The Shiatsu Bus

@the shiatsu bus

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Dan Smith

Today nothing is more important than our personal wellbeing. For many of us, the way we feel, whether mentally or physically, has taken a beating through COVID and many are struggling to get back on track.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that uses a combination of pressure points, gentle manipulation, and stretching to re-energise weak areas and reduce tension in the body. By applying sensitive, mindful, static touch with thumbs, fingers, and palms, the Shiatsu giver affects the functioning of physical systems such as the nervous, circulatory, and respiratory, thus supporting the body’s innate self-healing abilities and promoting a sense of relaxation and wellbeing. Academic research indicates that Shiatsu is safe and can reduce a wide range of symptoms, improving quality of life and reducing dependency on medication. Shiatsu touch, in its stillness, depth, and gentle compassion, is able to support the whole person.

Dan Smith owns and runs The Shiatsu Bus, a purpose-built mobile well-being clinic that brings the relaxation and healing benefits of Shiatsu massage to you, so you don't have to take valuable time out of your day to visit a therapist.

“I moved to Chesterfield in February but am originally from Derby and studied the three-year Shiatsu course in Sheffield,” explains Dan. " I went for Shiatsu treatments to help with my own symptoms and was so impressed by the impact the sessions had on my own health I decided I wanted to know more about this traditional Japanese massage therapy.

“This led me to study for three years at the Northern School of Shiatsu in Sheffield, and I started my own practice eight years ago. Six years

ago I set up The Shiatsu Bus,a purpose-built mobile treatment clinic, Shiatsu on wheels! I did operate from a local clinic but it didn’t suit me and the bus allows me to go to client's homes, without the need for them to take valuable time out of their day to travel, find parking, visit a clinic, and then return home. This is far too time-consuming for many and inhibitive for those who don't live near to a local therapist or may have mobility issues.”

“Shiatsu helps by stimulating the body’s own healing capacity, I act as a facilitator to help release tension, the cause of pain for so many, and allow the body to restore and return to a balanced state. It can be used to help aid so many symptoms such as those associated with fibromyalgia, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, stress, and much more.”

Business Intro
Page 16 www.s41local.com

I had no knowledge of Shiatsu before I met Dan and he explained to me how Shiatsu uses similar principles to acupuncture. It is a dynamic bodywork treatment that involves stretching and rotation of joints, often described as acupuncture without needles and is performed fully clothed. Shiatsu translates as 'finger pressure' from the Japanese and is a deeply relaxing massage therapy that promotes restorative sleep.

“Many of my patients suffer from back and muscle pain. As our bodies age things do become more difficult and Shiatsu enables me to cater to individual clients' needs, from very gentle to more dynamic techniques depending on the symptoms and constitution of the client.

“Treatments are suitable for all ages, and I have a special interest in treating the over 50s. Shiatsu is particularly effective at dealing with the ailments that come to us all as we age, putting people back on track so they can live life to the full.” Although his client's ages range from 18 to 85, Dan jokes that, “It feels like this particular age group is becoming a bit of a specialism.”

I was picking up that Shiatsu is about living a better quality of life, lifting your mood, releasing tension, helping people whose lives are limited by a health condition, and allowing us to get back to doing what we enjoy doing, whether that’s walking the dog, playing with the grandkids, a game of tennis or simply pushing the lawn mower up and down the garden.

If you fancy a Shiatsu massage session, give Dan a call, he’s a fully insured member of the Shiatsu Society and by bringing the clinic to you, you can be sure of a full hour of therapy to get you set up for the life you want to lead.

"I have been having regular sessions with Dan for a few months now & really feel the benefits. I suffer from a lot of pain & stiffness due to MS and feel so much better after a session.

The treatment is painless and very relaxing - I sleep well after my session! I currently have fortnightly treatments, and with Dan being mobile, it means I just have to walk out the door and into the van - no waiting for taxis or looking for parking spaces!

So glad I found this service and can highly recommend it - Dan is friendly and puts you at ease."

Johnson Surfacing

A local, family business since 1992

Words & images: Johnson Surfacing

Johnson Surfacing are a 15 strong team who specialise in tarmac surfacing, block paving and resin bound surfacing and have completed many local driveways and patios. They also take on commercial jobs; footpaths, car parks, access roads, commercial yards, housing estates, sports, and school playground surfaces and have worked around Chesterfield for 28 years now, so I thought it was time to catch up with director Sebastian Johnson, for a chat.

You’ve hopefully spotted their advert in S40 and S41 Local and may have seen them working in the local area. “We’re a local authority approved civil engineering and surfacing contractor, our offices are on Ashgate Road, and I live in Walton, so thoroughly local”.

In fact, Sebastian and his wife and children can often be seen walking their dog in Walton. Sebastian is Son to Philip and Heather, Philip founded the family business in 1992, after spending a life in construction he decided to be his own boss, whilst Sebastian’s mum worked locally in teaching, later becoming involved in the business too.

Johnson Surfacing have a vested interest in Chesterfield, it’s where they live and work and Sebastian and Elizabeth bring up their children; they’re a part of, and supportive of the local community. Spending money with Johnson Surfacing, as with any of our local businesses, means your money stays in the Chesterfield economy. “We have a great balance of residential and commercial work; some people think we only do large jobs but we do around 60 driveways a year, some large jobs take a significant amount of time to complete and a number of larger, commercial jobs”, says Sebastian.

"The commercial work often leads to residential jobs, we might be asked to provide a price for a driveway or patio of the business owner or one of the staff, and it’s this mix of jobs that keeps it interesting. We recently worked at a local school”, explains Sebastian.

“The headteacher then called a few months later to get their home driveway done. We’re also local authority approved, which means we can

Business intro Page 20 www.s41local.com

do drop kerbs, crossings, pavements etc. and we’re fully insured and licenced as necessary. We’re committed to providing quality workmanship, great value and customer service, much of our work is by recommendation and these values are important to us. We are approved members of the Derbyshire County Council Trusted Trader scheme and have been since 2009, another sign that quality and the customer are important to us, plus, it’s a great way to attract customers. Although most work is very local, we are working for both residential and commercial jobs spread a little further afield, Sheffield and Derby mainly."

“It brings us great pleasure to be involved with S41 Local Magazine and for their support for local business and for championing the local community.”Thanks Sebastian. If you’re in need of surfacing work please contact Johnson Surfacing at: 01246 231871

Keep It Local

The impact of choosing a small independent business.

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: White No Sugar Productions & Totally Locally

For our immediate economy to continue to thrive, we need to carefully consider our purchasing decisions, so it seems ever more important to support our local businesses and our local economy.

I’ve previously mentioned the ‘Tale of a Tenner’ video by White No Sugar Productions which was done for Totally Locally (hover your phone's camera over the quick code below to take you to the video on youtube - or google 'Tale of a Tenner') and it’s worth a watch.

The simple story is, basically a visitor introduces a tenner into a local business and it's then passed around between others before ending back where it started, it never leaves the immediate economy.

Since I started S40 Local over 14 years ago it’s changed the way I think about the stuff we buy and what we can do to make a difference.

Previously, if I needed something, I’d just buy it from the most convenient place, a large retail chain, a supermarket or a faceless internet site, whichever was easiest and/or cheapest.

Today things are different. Recently I spoke about my decision making process when seeking out a new bike for my son. Can I get one Locally? Can I get one made by a local Company? See the last edition for the story, (all editions are on our

website) but I try my hardest to stay local with my shopping when ever I can.

The flow shown is typical of any small town economy. Totallylocally are this year launching 'Magic Tenner', a campaign (see following pages) to encourage independent businesses to put on £10 offers that show case their products, a chance for people to pick up a bargain and perhaps visit a business they've never been to before.

The campaign runs 7 to 21 October 2023 but as we need to be ready for print so early we only have a small number of confirmed offers from fab local businesses. Look out for more over the fortnight.

Please try and do what you can to support them and please tell them where you saw the offer.

When I first mentioned the 'Tale of a Tenner' it was the first edition of 2019 and I said to consider it a resolution, it's just one way I can make a small difference in 2019. That message is still as important today as it was when I wrote it over four years ago... to try and encourage each and every one of us to consider where we might be able to make changes and support our immediate economy.

Over to you.

Wild Swimming A

Peak District Adventure

Words: Simon Paterson

Images: Adobe & Jen Brewster

If the pandemic taught us one thing, it is that our need to be with nature and the outdoors plays an integral part in our overall happiness. As a result of this, a growing trend has emerged – wild swimming, and the Peak District, often referred to as our back garden, stands as an ideal place to partake in this invigorating activity. With its sweeping landscapes and hidden aquatic gems, the Peak District has become a hot spot for outdoor swimming enthusiasts.

Wild Swimming offers a range of health and wellbeing benefits. Immersing yourself in chilly water stimulates blood circulation and the metabolism, and leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalised. I have used swimming in the past for injury recovery and prevention as it is a low-impact sport that engages all the major muscles. Exercise and the great outdoors are often recommended to help combat mental health. Wild Swimming releases endorphins which have a direct effect on our mood leaving us feeling content and relaxed.

During the summer, we enjoy taking the girls for a refreshing swim/paddle in Youlgreave river. This picturesque location has a natural pool with almost still waters, offering a safe and serene swimming experience... and there’s also an ice-cream van at the end of the road!

Before considering an outdoor swim there are some welcoming and informative online communities that you may want to check out. Sheffield Soup Swimmers regularly organise group swims which are a safe and fun way to start your wild swimming journey and they have a comprehensive location guide. Check out:

• Wild Swimming Derbyshire UK

• Sheffield Outdoor Plungers

• Peak Swims

If you have never been wild swimming before it is important you do it safely.

Location: Check local guides for beginner spots, as not all water that looks tempting is safe and you also need to be aware of access rights. Many of

these guides contain parking information, ability levels and ease of access. Prioritise places with mild currents with people around. Take precautions by checking the water temperature and strength before entering. Wetsuits offer great protection and are recommended for beginners to guard against the cold water.

Friends: Always swim with an experienced wild swimmer and/or with a group. It’s more fun and a lot safer.

Body: Listen to your body; if you feel too cold or anxious, exit the water.

Leave No Trace: Don’t be a litter lout. Take your rubbish home and leave the area in a better state than you found it.

Weather: Check the weather forecast and avoid swimming in choppy waters. Pick a nice calm day for your first swim.

Practice: If it's been a while since your last swim, head down to Queens Park Leisure to get some practice in before venturing out into open waters. Enjoy: Take a towel, some high carbohydrate snacks, and a change of clothes, oh and don’t forget the sunscreen!

If after all this you like the sound of an outdoor swim but fancy the waters a little warmer, you can always pop along to the outdoor pool at Hathersage where the water is a toasty 27 degrees!

Sam B-K

Words: Simon Paterson

Images: Sam B-K

Sam B-K recently took to the stage as part of the Unhampered Live event, held in conjunction with Peddler Market this summer. His electrifying performance at the Society on Stephenson's Place drew a standingroom-only crowd.

In the wake of the release of his latest single, "The Chase," I had the privilege of catching up with him to delve into topics ranging from mentors and his teenage band days to his sources of inspiration. Many of us can recall that one teacher from our school days who transcended the role of just being an educator; they became a mentor, a friend, and a firm believer in our potential. For Sam BK, that person was Andy Stone, the music teacher at Tupton Hall School. It was Andy who patiently taught Sam how to play the guitar, nurturing his talent and igniting his passion.

"I was 12 years old and had never really found my thing but after mentioning guitar lessons a few times to my mum she suggested I use the money my grandma gifted me due to the government compensation of Grandads Coal mine work. Initially I felt bad because I thought it should go to something more serious but after realising it was my calling and my Mum seeing how passionate I was, we realised it was money well spent. After All...what's more serious than Rock N Roll? Sam laughed.

"Andy Stone was the music teacher at school, and he was amazing. We had the same taste in music, and he really was a great guy. If it was not for Andy and my mum's parents, I may never have found my calling,” reflects Sam.

Under the tutorship of Andy, Sam played his prized possession every day and it wasn’t long before Sam joined his first rock band.

“I was in a few bands but my proper, first band was named after an AC-DC song ‘A Whole Lot of Rosie. ’Our lead singer was called Rory, so we named ourselves ‘A Whole Lot of Rory,’ Rory was a big personality and was a bit of a school legend,” laughs Sam.

Sam’s sound has evolved over the years and so has his singing. I asked him which genre he sits in and why?

“It’s a tough one really! The industry has changed so much. You used to be able to say, oh that’s 80’s pop, indie, classic rock etc... but I suppose I am an alternative, indie rocker at heart. I don’t want to be too pop and safe, but on the other hand, I don’t want to be too heavy either. I am somewhere in the middle,” says Sam.

In addition to his love for classic rock bands like the Foo Fighters and the Arctic Monkeys, Sam also has a love for alternative hiphop, in particular for Artist Atmosphere "

“During my time studying music production at university, my horizons expanded, leading me to explore rap music. One artist who has really resonated with me is Atmosphere. His lyrics delve into real-life experiences and family dynamics, which I find particularly relatable as a new dad myself,” smiles Sam.

There’s a myth that suggests you're either born with the ability to sing or you're not, as if it's an innate talent. However, much like any musical instrument, singing can be significantly improved with dedicated practice and effort.

“I never aspired to be being a lead singer, I thought my voice wasn’t good enough. I concentrated my efforts on mastering the lead guitar. It wasn’t until I had singing lessons that is changed. Some people are natural singers, and some of us must work at it. I went through a few vocal coaches before I found the right one, and my voice, "adds Sam.

The Chase is Sam’s first release, a melodic northern track with a chorus that thumps along like a sprinter's heartbeat.

“I wrote the Chase when I was very much in my drinking days at Uni. It tells the story of a typical night out. Everyone tells me it’s the catchiest tune I’ve got so it had to be my first release. I had a blast making the music video for it as well. I Bought all the volunteers a bacon sandwich, about of them!" Smiles Sam.

Sam is currently on tour, actively promoting his new material. You can see him perform live at Sydney and Matilda in Sheffield on 22 September. Secure your tickets by scanning the QR code opposite.

What's On

Celebrating over 40 years as a live performer, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. What sets Eddi apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance and ability to not only move the listener, but connect her experience to that of her audience. No two performances are ever the same. Though first brought into the limelight as front woman for Fairground Attraction, who’s #1 single, Perfect and parent album, First of a Million Kisses, both topped the British charts, it was Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that signaled her ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them very much her own.

GARDEN TIPS

If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go. When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids some shaping while they are dormant. Remember that next year's fruit will appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants.

When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.

Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. Keep harvesting runner and French beans, many vegetables (including courgettes) will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. There comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground.

Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic and continue to sow winter lettucesstart in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few).

Now is a good time to think about ordering new fruit trees and moving existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm. Keep on top of tidying jobs but leave as many ornamental seed-heads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs.

Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.

Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaffall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

So the new season has kicked off and what a game the opener was against Dorking! As you're probably aware it ended 4-3 and that was a surprise given at the 90th minute, it was 3-2. The added 13 minutes injury time helped the goal tally. Luckily there weren't any permanent injuries to the Spireites which is good. If you read my article last month I was sharing my fears of us picking up injuries to derail our final season in this league. I lost count how many times Dobra hit the deck but I think most of his were orchestrated to be honest… he fooled me each time so he may win at the Oscars this year.

As the games came and went the goals followed. At the time of writing there's been 37. Sounds good doesn't it, and it would be even better if we

hadn't conceded 15 of them. But at least we are joint top of the league, Barnet just above on goal difference. Speaking of which, I bumped into Chesterfield born Zak Brunt at a recent wedding I photographed. Anyway, we climbed up there after just seven games and none of them had a zero in the final score. We scored four against Fylde, two against Oxford, three against Hartlepool and four away at Aldershot. All these games we earned all three points. So far we've drawn one and lost only once, but we still scored in each game. Again just like last season there were numerous goal scorers, Mandeville, Grimes, Grigg, Naylor, Colclough, Quigley and Palmer to name a few. Naylor did what usually happens to us and scored his goal to win the Hartlepool game in stoppage

time. The 94th minute to be precise. Mental is the word for that game! After just seven minutes of the game we were 2 nil down and to be honest I thought we were going to get battered as I was sitting there with my camera in hand. But to the Spireites credit we didn't , by the 15th minute Colclough had netted a quick reply and then two minutes after the start of the second half, Grimes headed in the equalizer.

Now my only gripe about watching the Spireites play this season is that they do seem to be a bit predictable. They try the ball down the left, come back in the middle, then try down the right. Then try down the left again and go to the middle again and they try down the right. Then they return to the left and return to the right. Call me old fashioned but why not just take the odd shot from outside the box for a change, test the opposition's keeper? I'm no footballing expert by any stretch of the imagination but you need a plan B if plan A isn't working. But having said that, plan A does help with the olde camera work when you know where the balls are going to end up.

Being objective though, we do win games so maybe I’m being picky. But a shot from outside the box once in a while would be nice to witness as a spectator.

The game with Dagenham and Redbridge was a hot day at the office and even though we played plan A footy again, we won. We conceded in the first half but in the second half scored three to win 3-1. We did come back from behind again which is a sign that we've evolved from recent Years, we don't seem to panic and give up. So you could say, repetition has its good points (three in fact) and winning is the most important thing. It may be predictable to watch but the results keep coming, which in turn renders my previous comments pointless. But I do hear other Spireites pointing this out. Especially during the home games as operation plan A is underway, "Shoot!" as the ball is played across the 20 yard line. This time however a free kick and penalty brought us back into the game from Colclough and Griggs, with Banks' third sealing the three points ironically from outside the box. I guess in the 97th minute being 2-1 up you can throw caution to the wind. The Spireites league position changed during the game too from 2nd, to 5th backup to 2nd so it's tight at the top. Let's keep up the best plan of winning this league and lifting the trophy at home.
