Intro Welcome to the July edition of S40 Local. Firstly I'd like to apologise to a few houses in the Queen Mary's area of Somersall, where I was made aware of a problem with deliveries last month. I'm hopeful this has been corrected, but if there are any issues please let me know. I'd also like to thank the people who did get in touch, so we were able to put it right! A huge thank you also to everyone who turned up to the first session of the Brampton Bicycle Club at Holmebrook Valley Park on Thursday 18th June. We had a great turn out and all the riders seemed to enjoy it. Thanks to Alastair, Jake, Kaz, Freya, Alison and Ann for volunteering their time. It appears we hit on an area of interest with the article on Chetwynd House in the last edition. The facebook post reached 8500+ people, with many looking back fondly on the building and times spent in them, thank you to Angela and Jackie. So to this month's edition, we've an article on Chesterfield in the Middle Ages, in support of the work being done by the Battle of Chesterfield group to establish an event to commemorate the 750th anniversary next year. I have to say a personal thanks my kids Joe and Sophie and their friend Connor for the drawings for the map. Excellent work. Not forgetting thanks to our ghost writer Trevor the Ink for all his work, fantastic effort. In addition this month we have info on the Chatsworth Road Festival and the Chesterfield Carnival, two events bringing the community together. I've written up my notes after visiting the new Derby Velodrome! We have news from Maison Mes Amis who celebrate five years on Chatsworth Road and we meet the owners of two new businesses, Eleanor Rose Lingerie and Coffee St plus all the usual stuff. As I write, it's five weeks to the summer holidays so don't forget to book your adverts and share your ideas for keeping the kids entertained through the summer holidays. The next edition delivers on 9 August and the following one on 20 September, slightly longer gaps between editions than usual. Medieval Chesterfield's Street Names Part of the Battle of Chesterfield Series

he origin of street names weaves way back in history and in Chesterfield some are unique to the town, and many date back, like the street layout, to the middle ages. Firstly we need to get to grips with some medieval terms – so confusingly ‘gate’ meant road, and ‘bar’ meant gate. Gate, like a lot of northern words, was a Viking word. Street could mean street in the same way as it does today, but often meant a long distance route – maybe using the path of a Roman road - rather than a street in town. So Saltergate is just a road name and it doesn’t mean there was some sort of gate. Whilst West Bars was a bar (a gate across the road), and became the name of the road the bar was on. Got that? Good. The map overleaf shows Chesterfield and its street names in medieval times, after the market was laid out (around 1200 AD), into which we’re going to delve. St Mary’s Gate, was probably called Soutergate for most of the middle ages. Soutergate means ‘gate’ (street) of the shoemakers and was the main north-south route. The small north-south lane 100 yards east of St Mary’s Gate, now Station Road, was originally called ‘Behindhand’ and there’s evidence (archaeologists found a ditch) that this may have marked the boundary of the town. Holywell Street was originally Haliwellgate. It led from the Church past the town’s original market which was just north of the Church. The ‘holy well’ was somewhere near the site of the later Chesterfield Girl’s Grammar School on Sheffield Road. (St Helena’s which some of you will even have attended.) Knifesmithgate stretched further east than it does now and included what is now

Stephenson Place and was possibly named after the merchant John le Knyfsmyth, rather than being a street full of Knife-smiths. High Street probably didn’t have that name then, and although we don’t have clear evidence, there are clues that a part of it, the section just south of M&S where Clark’s shoes is today, was called Draper’s Row, and other sections of the street had their own names. It’s believed Saltergate was named because it was used by traders bringing in salt from Cheshire. Salt was not just something used when cooking, it was really important in preserving food. No freezers or canned foods back then. Kalehalgate led east from Chesterfield; starting where Hollis Lane is now, between Chandlers Bar and the Galleon Steakhouse. ‘Kalehal’ meant Calow. Although the northsouth route through town was important, the east and west routes in Chesterfield were possibly even more important to local people. Chesterfield would have been on the boundary between arable land to the east and the more difficult land of the peaks, and our markets would have been important for exchanging the produce of both communities. Vicar Lane, now a shopping precinct, was probably a short lane leading to the old vicarage. The vicarage being where the road now joins Steeplegate. Bishop’s Mill Lane would have led to one of Chesterfield’s two water mills. In the middle ages peasants had to grind their grain using the mill owned by their landlord. The Bishop would have been a major landlord and owner of this mill. Bishop’s Mill Lane led north east from the junction of Holywell Street and St Mary’s Gate to the River Rother. Lordsmill Street, now part of the north-south route through the town, would probably have

continued to a water mill on the River Hipper south east of town (about where the A61 crosses it), used by peasants on land owned by the Lord of the manor of Chesterfield. Spital Lane originally led to St Leonard’s, the leper hospital, on the east side of the Rother. Beetwell Street is possibly named after a well! Fresh water from wells was important to people. This would have been a shorter street then, stretching only to South Street. South Street, obviously, led south, as it does now but only from Packers Row to Beetwell Street. Steppingstones Lane led south from the market area to the Hipper and we’re guessing there was no bridge then….:-) Narrow Lane, is now called Broad Pavement – rather ironically and is the alley that leads from Saltergate to Knifesmithgate. The Shambles. The little group of streets east of the open market seems to have been laid out at the same time as the market itself, as part of the same plan. It probably started as rows of stalls with each row of stalls specialising in a trade. Over time the stalls were built up into shops. Some of the row names still survive and others are found in old legal documents. Rows included Ironmongers’ Row, Fisher Row, Potter’s Row, Palmersgate, and Souter Row. And of course there was the Shambles itself . The word ‘Shambles’ originally meant any sort of stall but came to mean just ‘meat stall’ or butchers. You can guess what the place might have been like by considering what the word means now!

town. West Bars, which is where the name came from; one by the Falcon Inn (now the Barnsley Building Society) on Central Pavement, and North Bars which was probably on Knifesmithgate. The one by the Falcon was still known as Toll Nook or Toll Corner into the 19th century. The Yards. Medieval town planning used areas of land called burgage plots. These were narrow but very long strips of land with the narrow end facing a medieval street. They seem amazingly long to us nowadays. Often they became streets themselves, of a sort, with houses, shops, ale-houses, chicken coops, and stables along their length. Surviving examples of burgage plots turned into ‘streets’ are Falcon Yard, Wards Yard, and Theatre Yard. These stretched from the market all the way to the Hipper. They may have had different names back in the middle ages of course. Less easy to make out is Angel Yard which stretched from Saltergate (you can see an Angel Yard road sign by the Barley Mow pub) to the market. Its market end is where the gap between the old Post Office and Meadowfresh is now. It was called Angel Yard after Chesterfield’s famous coaching Inn, The Angel, which closed in 1915. Shepley’s Yard (behind Knifesmithgate) is still there too, as is Spread Eagle Yard off Beetwell Street. References exist to other yards like Hitchcock’s Yard (behind Knifesmithgate) and Star and Garter Yard and Schofield Yard (behind Dent’s in New Square) but they have long gone. So many of the existing street names and the town centre layout has survived well over 500 years. There’s been expansion around the edges but much remains and will be very much like it was 750 years ago, when the Battle of Chesterfield, which we’re celebrating in in May next year would have taken place.

Packers Row marks the eastern boundary of the shambles and so was also the easternmost part of the whole medieval market layout. Its name suggests a route for pack horses bringing goods to the new market. If we travel north from the market was Glumangate. Wonderfully, this name may (possibly) derive from ‘Glee Men’ which meant minstrels! A street full of minstrels? Or where a popular minstrel lived? We may never know. Glumangate, like Knifesmithgate, is a name unique to Chesterfield - no other town in the country has names like these. The west end of the market (by Dent’s) now New Square, was Swine’s Green. It changed its name to New Square after the Market Hall was constructed in the 1850’s. The Bars. Chatsworth Road Festival 1 to 4 October 2015 Words: Paul Chapman

hursday 1 to Sunday 4 October, a date for your diary, is the Chatsworth Road Festival.

This year the slightly different format will see the same exciting and entertaining events, condensed into a fun filled weekend of activity and entertainment. The official start of the festival will be marked by the chiming of the bells at St Thomas’ Church, a sign to get the bunting up and to get out and about! We’re hoping to see the Mayor up a ladder helping to string up the bunting, before heading off to a community ‘best breakfast’, at the Carers Centre at West Bars. This is typical of a festival event, a small community gathering to celebrate the moment or the day, enjoy a coffee, eat cake and bond with the community of which they are part. It’s these community interactions that get things started, indeed the first festival came about as a result of a customer, Di and a shopkeeper, Deidre Gage, sparking a thought that led to the first event. So the festival committee has changed a little recently, some shops have closed and new ones quickly opened up in their place. Even a few spaces that have been empty a while are now occupied by proud new owners, which is all great news. Chatsworth Road is still a great place to be and a location that attracts great new businesses and continues to be vibrant and a busy place in which to live and work – worth celebrating! Businesses and community groups have been thinking about their events and filling in forms, to make sure the events are listed in the festival guide and in S40 Local. If you are

A trip round the boards at Derby's newest Arena and sports venue. Words: Paul Chapman

he new Derby Arena is one of only five velodromes in the UK, and is just 29 miles away from Chesterfield, in Derby.

It opened its doors to customers in March this year, following the official opening where guests; Paralympic champion Dame Sarah Storey and Derby MP Margaret Beckett unveiled a commemorative plaque signalling the completion of the £28m project. It’s exciting to have such a facility so close, especially for a generation inspired by the excitement and success in the Olympic velodrome in 2012. When names such as Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Jason Kenny, Ed Clancy and Laura Trott won medals and made history. The Arena itself is home to a collection of sporting facilities of which the 250m cycle track is pivotal. The venue also provides an infield the size of 13 badminton courts, 140-station gym, 2 group exercise studios, a

Wattbike studio, a café and a bar. In addition the Arena can seat over 1,500 spectators for sports events and with additional seating in the central area can accommodate events and concerts for 5,000 people. As I drove towards the site I was instantly impressed by the futuristic appearance of the ‘Dome’ clad in gold, silver and bronze to purposely mimic the colours of the Olympic medals. Thin aluminium strips wrapped around the building in the same way as the 26 miles of wooden boards which wrap around the deeply sculptured surface of the track. The building started on site in November 2012 and was delivered three months early by local contractors Bowmer and Kirkland who handed the keys over earlier this year. Today the necessary team is in place and the facility has hosted the Youth Omnium, Derby University graduation, 2 NBL badminton matches and DWYW Life event.

The official list of facilities includes: •

250m indoor cycle track suitable for individuals, clubs, schools, groups and business track sessions, track leagues, and local, regional, national and international track events. • Sports courts are available for activities such as badminton, netball, volleyball, futsal and handball. • Cycle hub with hire, repair & storage • A state-of-the-art 140-station gym, powered by Technogym. • Watt bike and exercise studios • Event and conferencing facilities • Meeting and hospitality rooms available for hire • Café and bar • Fixed spectator seating for over 1500 people • Fully accessible changing rooms The most striking part of the design inside is the way in which the track is elevated to the second floor above the sports courts, which sit a floor below behind a glass wall, at the base of the track. For the cyclists on the track, it looks a long way down to the sports courts below, from the top of the banked corners!

Fancy a go? You can book taster and accreditation sessions at the Velodrome where experienced cycling instructors are on hand to take you through the different stages of track cycling to make you a confident rider and lead to an accreditation to be able to cycle unsupervised. Events are being planned for the Arena and an early rumour suggested Sir Bradley Wiggins would attempt the hour record at the track, unfortunately for Derby this took part at Lee Valley VeloPark, formerly known as the Olympic Velodrome, on Sunday June 7 where Sir Bradley successfully completed 54.526km in an hour. My name is Maria Davison and last year I revived the Chesterfield Carnival. Following its awesome success, this year it's back as a ‘weekender’, two days not to be missed.

In my day job I'm a nurse. I revived the event last year in memory of a colleague’s wife following the excellent care she received in her last days from the fantastic Ashgate Hospice. This year we've pledged to raise £5000. Any additional funds raised will be donated to a local group or club, which you'll have the chance to nominate, helping the places that make a difference, yet are so often forgotten. Chesterfield Carnival is completely not for profit, every single penny raised is donated. We do have unavoidable costs but these are kept to a minimum thanks to all the fantastic volunteers. If something matters to you, it probably also matters to others. ‘There is nothing for the kids to do….’ a common statement, why doesn't this continue with ‘….so I am starting a club for them’. Through Chesterfield Carnival we want to remove the barriers, unite as one to stand together with a joint cause of making a difference. Communities cannot be run and built in offices some distance from the area, communities are built by the people who live in them. Maison Mes Amis Celebrating five years of a certain 'je ne sais quoi' on Chatsworth Road. Words: Paul Chapman

t’s five years since I first met Marcella Kirk, fresh back to the UK after running her holiday business in France. She was creating a French inspired café in the unit at Libbys. In that short space of time Marcella definitely hasn’t stood still moving premises to open Maison MesAmis two and a half years ago and then adding new bar, Petite Maison last year. Marcella explained “We very quickly outgrew the space at 479, we became licenced and started opening in the evenings offering French inspired bistro meals with good wine.” “To meet the growing demand we needed a full size kitchen and bar, but somewhere that would enable us to still offer a relaxed café environment throughout the day. I explored options further afield but with Chatsworth Road as the place to be in Chesterfield I took a serious look when the premises became vacant at The Old Prince of Wales pub and decided to undertake the renovation.”

If you remember the old pub was dark and tired inside, Marcella and team set about a complete refurbishment from top to bottom. The space upstairs was converted to living accommodation and the new bar area completely reconfigured. The new premises at Maison MesAmis is bright and airy, a great place in which to enjoy a little bit of France, on Chatsworth Road. “Maison MesAmis is a Brasserie by day offering breakfast, coffees, afternoon teas and a full lunch menu” explains Marcella. “Then at night we change the table-ware and serve up an elegant A La Carte dining experience. It really is a place where people can feel comfortable right through the day.” Getting the food right is important to Marcella and head chef, Craig Skinner, trained at Fischers in Baslow and was head chef at Rowleys before moving to Maison. Craig is still with Maison and accompanied by Ian Hill, Emma Burham who started as an apprentice

and Jack Scott. “Our menu is French themed using seasonal foods, served on proper plates, no slates, shovels or baskets for your chips!”

Petite Maison opens from 6pm on Thursday and 5pm on a Friday and Saturday.

Marcella previously managed airline crews, worked in marketing and hospitality and knows the importance of good customer service.

But it doesn’t stop there, Marcella was excited to announce that they’re now able to host weddings and are in the process of converting the living space.

Maison love to put on a party, “we’ve had the gentleman rhymer Mr B a few times, he has a great following, we’ve hosted a Halloween night, Christmas parties, the terrace party complete with Carnival theme, stilt walkers, fire breathers, magicians, hula-hoop house DJs, Motown… something for everyone.

“The living space is shortly to become a tasting room and private dining room which can cater for ten people. The feel upstairs will be very intimate, there is a dedicated kitchen and people can enjoy an evening with their own room, chef and waiter for the night. Perfect for that special occasion” Marcella explained.

“At Christmas we hosted a Winter Wonderland theme, we removed the tables to create space, people sporting the latest Alpine Chic and ski gear… right here on Chatsworth Road.

“We’ve hosted four wedding breakfasts over the past months, completely tailored around the couple” enthuses Marcella. “We don’t offer a package as every wedding is different and it’s our job to make the day perfect. Our largest wedding was celebrated in April with 54 people for a seated meal and then 80 to 100 people enjoying the evening with the Bride and Groom.

“I find I’m inspired by Studio 54 of New York, a great place to party – though we’re along way from the decadence they achieved in the late 70's events at the club.” The latest edition to Maison is Petite Maison run by James Longworth, Marcella’s partner. “On August 14 last year we took on the premises adjacent to Maison and in December opened up a Cocktail and Champagne bar. The bar gives people a place to call in for a drink or enjoy pre and post dinner drinks, a more relaxed bar environment away from other diners.”

“We’d love to do more weddings and special celebrations for people, the new additions give us more options and make it easier for us to put on more great events.” If you’ve not eaten at Maison Marcella the team would love to see you, and on Marcella’s advice “if you do come, try our beef bourguignon it’s cured for eight hours and I can assure you, it’s delicious.”

I would not go to school because I felt so shy and embarrassed at my lack of learning. Everyone laughed at me and called me a baby because I couldn’t do Maths. I had no friends in my class and it was just AWFUL day in and day out. So I refused to go. Got my mum into some trouble but I couldn’t do it anymore. As I was in year 11, my mum was really worried about me and my future... well what future did I have to look forward to? Anyway she heard of Jo at a place called Kip McGrath and made me go along, I didn’t want to go. When we got there, Jo was not what I expected and was ok to talk to. We talked about ‘stuff’ like what I felt at school and what friends I had, and then she said we could play a game that would kind of test my Maths, ‘cos that was my worst thing. I don’t know what the result was, but she said I should go once a week and she’d help me quietly to get better. My mum said ok, but my Maths teacher had to know about Jo as well. They must have talked and stuff because Jo sent her

regular updates and work I was doing to show her what I was up to. Anyway after about three weeks I felt loads better and was quite proud of what I’d done at Kip, I also liked talking to the other kids in my room. My mum said I was to go twice a week and do my English as well. I liked that! I sort of liked being with other kids and not at home alone so much so after two months I said I’d go back to school to do more subjects, not all of them, just the ones that I liked and where the other kids were more kind to me. I gotta tell you I was so happy after 5 months when Jo did the Maths test again and said in 5 months I had improved by 2 years and 8 months on where I started! Wow! Did that make me smile and even Jo had a tear in her eye, my mum cried which was like really embarrassing! So with a little help from my friends at Kip, Jo, my Maths teacher and of course my mum, I feel like a new person and I am going back into school full time and have a more fun life. It has taught me that being alone and avoiding something is not good, but with the right help you can do anything. 2 years and 8 months better in Maths in five months! I am so chuffed with myself. A great coffee throughout the day; lazy breakfasts, delightful lunches, early evening pizza, and cocktails and drinks until midnight in the late lounge. Dan Carrington is the owner and takes his coffee very seriously, his mission “to provide a comfortable atmosphere for the best coffee experience”. Dan didn’t start out in catering, originally following a Design and Innovation degree, “I completed the degree” explains Dan, “it seemed right at the time but I felt like I was doing a degree to get a degree, I never really saw myself using the skills gained.” Following this he played professional golf, before travelling around America and Europe. With the birth of their daughter, he and his wife Rebecca decided to settle down close to home, Rebecca working and Dan looking after their three year old daughter. When it was time to return to work he was keen to try something he enjoyed… coffee! “I’ve always enjoyed a good coffee shop and it seemed right that I set up my own business, something a little different that picks out the best of all my favourite coffee haunts.” The result is Coffee St, situated in the premises, previously occupied by ‘A for Art’. “When I came to view the premises, I knew they were just right for the atmosphere and environment I had in mind. The old doors, shop front and interior wooden clad walls retain the charm of the old shops. I could already visualise a bespoke large table and commissioned artwork by Chesterfield resident fine artist and modern mural painter, Pete Barber, as a fitting tribute to 'A for Art', the old art shop. “I was looking to create a new asset to add to Chesterfield’s great collection

of independent businesses. A relaxing environment with great service. We’re a family business so it’s not just a job, it’s an investment in which we’re all involved. “My father has been in catering all his life, he lectured at Sheffield college and has helped put together the menu. Rebecca, my wife, takes care of the social media, advertising, menus etc and Kyle our Barista is my nephew.” I liked the look of the menu, light, simple and tasty. A modern English breakfast, eggs many ways, sandwiches, stonebaked flatbread pizza “and it’s all freshly produced and sourced locally from Chesterfield” Dan is keen to add. “Our coffee is blended specifically for us, half Brazilian and half Kenyan, soft and not too bitter, nice and balanced I like to think.” When Dan was looking for premises he admits to travelling away from town to look at Eccleshall Road in Sheffield and the Derby Cathedral Quarter. “My preference was to remain in my home town and I was thrilled to find the ‘A for Art’ premises”. When we spoke Coffee St had been open for just under three weeks and Dan admits that the word is spreading slowly “so far it’s been enjoyable, we haven’t done any advertising so the only people finding us are those passing by, it’s given us the opportunity to find our feet and figure out what works and what doesn't, to make tweaks and improve the menus.”

Coffee St is also licensed and is looking forward to opening into the evening offering food and a comfortable environment for a drink. “We’ll have upmarket cocktails, local bottled beers and real ales” says Dan, “perhaps a mature place for a beer and a catch-up with friends, relaxing and laid back.

London Road Film review

inema, I confess, is one of my guilty leisure pleasures, taking in five or six films a month.

Some are rom coms, many are comedic, and an occasional chiller adds variety but no film since The Grand Budapest Hotel has been as bizarre as the one seen on my visit to Cineworld Chesterfield last week. LONDON ROAD, directed by Rufus Norris, tells the story of the Ipswich serial murders of 2006 through the eyes of neighbours living on the street where a group of prostitutes regularly plied their trade. A local resident, aka the Suffolk Strangler, was eventually convicted of the murders of five young girls in a six week period between October and December 2006. The film however, focuses less on the murderer and his unfortunate victims, concentrating more on the impact these events have on individuals and families living in the area. Olivia Coleman (of Broadchurch and Twenty Twelve fame), Tom Hardy (Inception, Child 44) and Anita Dobson (EastEnders) all star, with Coleman engaging the audience right from the start as the ‘central character' resident - who starts to bring together a totally freaked out community. Everyone is suspicious of everyone else. And who wouldn’t be with a serial killer alive and kicking on their doorstep. So why is LONDON ROAD so different to other factional thrillers? Because it’s a Musical! “Everybody’s very, very nervous” the film’s most memorable song truly portrays the fear felt by the residents whilst the killer was at large. It is one of those songs that gets into the brain and won't let go - the tune still echoing in my ears more than a week later.

The film is a collaborative production between inspired playwright Alecky Blythe and musician/composer Adam Cork. Blythe uses a unique verbatim technique throughout LONDON ROAD - having visited Ipswich on a number of occasions prior to the murderer’s arrest and during the trail to interview the residents and record the atmosphere in the area. She then has the recorded interviews transcribed word for word, including all pauses, sighs, err’s and um’s. These ‘actual’ transcriptions are then set brilliantly to music by Cork perfectly conveying the changing emotions and mood of the community. LONDON ROAD is not all doom and gloom - amongst moments of heart stopping tension there are flashes of comedy and a ‘triumph over evil’ good feeling spreads when the community pulls together through the darkest of events. As I waited for the film to start I had no concept of what I was about to see and the moment the first resident appears on screen singing I thought ‘What the heck is this?’ However, as with 'The Grand Budapest Hotel’ there is something mesmerising about LONDON ROAD that keeps you watching - it is innovative, ground-breaking and enthrallingly bizarre the 91 minutes running time just flies by. Recent field trips have included Langford Low Fields, Middleton Lakes, Pleasley Pit Nature Reserve and Clumber Park, Notts where species spotted have included the Pied Flycatcher, Ring Ouzel, Winchat, Grasshopper Warblers, Cuckoos, Warbler, Hobby, Jays, Redpolls, Hawfinch, Nightjar ... plus many others. The AGM on the 27th July will be at Eastwood Hall at 7 pm. In addition to the field trips, the group continues to carry out bird population and status surveys in the Linacre woodland area. The local community will naturally be excited, curious and we hope that many will become actively involved.

Garden Things for July Words: Colin Harrison Picture: Robert Nixon Betts There’s quite a lot to do in the garden at the moment, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. As well as routine things like mowing the grass and weeding, here are ten other things that may be necessary (depending on what you grow). 1.

If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed. Giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important to keep fruit and vegetables well watered rather than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway.

Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly.

Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them.

Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use.

A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds), which renders them useless - harvest before this happens. Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway (Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap at the Brampton Food Fair in October).

Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed. You can use these as cuttings; just put them in water until roots appear then pot them up.

If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell.

Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway!

There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and and been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover.

10. Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way. Children like to see instant results, so use these as a way of introducing them to gardening.
