Welcome to the November edition of S40 Local! Well the Chatsworth Road festival has been and gone thank you to everyone who participated and supported the events. The feedback has been really positive from the people I’ve spoken to – and we’ve got a brief round-up on page 46. So, we now seem to be hurtling head-along towards Christmas, how did that happen? To help you make your gift choices using our local businesses, we’ve put together a gift guide, thanks to our fantastic advertisers. Please take a look perhaps even arrange a Christmas shopping day, with a lunch stop, on and around Chatsworth Road! A massive thank you to Conor Graves for the cover photo showing our landmark crooked spire reflected in a puddle, and reflecting the Autumn season. Destination Chesterfield is running a 'Made in Chesterfield' campaign to raise the profile of the manufacturing and engineering sector in the area. To support the campaign we've been taking a look at what's been made here in the past. Some we expected, some we definitely did not! Here's some (but not all!) of the things we found.

Midget Submarines, a bit of a surprise with Chesterfield being so far from the sea. Back in World War II the Royal Navy built a series of tiny four man submarines for special missions. These were the type of boats used, for example, to attack the German battleship Tirpitz, to raid harbours, and to scout beaches for the D-Day landings. Some of these very special craft were built by Markham's at their Broad Oaks works in town. They built four; two X-craft and 2 XE-craft. The boats were small enough to go on the back of a railway wagon, so it was not a problem building them here. For submariners joining their vessels in Chesterfield, it must have been puzzling to be sent to a place eighty-five miles from the coast... Go-Karts. At one time famous local company Robinson's acquired a London firm called JJ Blow, based by the giant postal sorting office at Mount Pleasant. Manufacturing was moved to Chesterfield. The company was basically a manufacturer of agricultural equipment, things like butter churns and milk filters, but for some reason they also made go-karts. These were made in Chester Street, but manufacture moved to the Oldfield works off Chatsworth Road, where Morrison’s supermarket is now. The karts were nicknamed 'Blowkarts' and were popular in the 60's and 70's. The karts don't seem to have been the height of fashion, but they were apparently well made, well balanced, robust little things which were great fun and won races, which was the point! Cannons. There still stands an old water mill close to the River Hipper on Dock Walk with the sign 'Cannon Mill 1816' on it. You can see the water wheel today, if you peer over the side. This mill was part of the famous Griffin Works owned by Ebenezer Smith and Co, a major iron-founder back in the 18th and early 19th century. Smith's was one of Chesterfield's contributions to the industrial revolution. They smelted iron in large quantities, using ore dug from local mines, and they made all sorts of things, including cannons and cannon balls. Cannons made in Chesterfield were used against the King's enemies in the American War of Independence and in the wars against Napoleon. The works employed over 1,200 people at one point.

Steam Engines. Ebenezer Smith also made steam engines and boilers. There's a very old engine in the Science Museum in London inscribed with the words “Francis Thompson Engineer 1791” that is thought to have been made at least partly at the Griffin works. Thompson was from Ashover, and his son later worked with the Smiths in Chesterfield, building steam engines for pumping water and powering machinery, especially for mines and factories. Locomotive Engines. As well as the stationary steam engines made by Smiths, other Chesterfield companies such as Oliver and Co, and later Markham's made

locomotives designed to go on rails. These weren't big main-line engines, but small powerful things designed for shunting and for work in factory and mine sidings.

Railway Carriages and Wagons. There were several makers of carriages in town. Markham's made some, there were also the Edward Eastwood's 'Railway Wagon and Wheel Works' and a couple of others. These firms would also repair wagons, even loaning you a wagon while they did the work; kind of like courtesy cars today. If you like train sets, you can get modern models of Eastwood's Chesterfield-made wagons for your layout. Disposable Nappies. Robinson's were the world's first producer of disposable nappies, using a design patented by Valerie de Ferranti and husband Pat Hunter-Gordon. Valerie was the grand-daughter of inventor Sebastian de Ferranti, a famous name in electrical engineering, and seems to have had an inventive and practical mind: a rare combination. The first trade names were 'Paddi Pads'; the later all-in-one version was called Cosifits. They were made in the Goytside Road works. Many of you, when babies, will have found their ease in these popular garments. Leather. One of Chesterfield's oldest industries is leather making and working. This goes back a very long way. Old charters and maps show a series of tanneries between the south of town and the River Hipper, and there always seems to have been leather workers in town: St Mary's Gate was once called Soutergate which means 'shoemaker street', and there's still a Souter Row in the Shambles. As well as shoe makers, boot makers and clog makers (there were several in town in the nineteenth century) there were glovers, saddle and harness makers. Interestingly, the manufacture of gloves, requiring a finer grade of leather, was for a while a local speciality using skills learnt from French prisoners captured during the

wars against Napoleon. There’s still a tannery in town today: Clayton's, who make leather for industrial and luxury uses, and famously, for cricket balls. Silk. History books often mention the Lombe Silk Mill at Derby as one of the first modern factories of the industrial revolution. Well, Chesterfield also had a silk mill of its very own. William Tucker's mill was five stories high (huge for the time) and employed scores of people. It was near the bottom of South Place, on a site now buried under Markham Road and the Ravenside car park. It's thought that it dated back to the 1780s but may have been operating before then. The silk business eventually failed and the building was later used by Harrison's, a boot and shoe company. Cigarettes. Starting in Wheeldon Lane, near the Ragged School, then moving to Spital, George Mason and Sons built a business cutting and packaging tobacco for pipes and for hand-rolling, and we guess, for chewing. They also produced cigarettes; a pack of eight Mason's Golden Flake cigarettes could be had for tuppence (2d in old money, less than 1p). Like the silk mill, they employed teenage girls in large numbers, advertising the work as 'clean and light'. Sweets and confectionery. Many of us remember Trebor's and the smell of peppermint wafting over town, but there were sweet makers here in the past too. Samuel Elliott's of Park Road manufactured boiled sweets by the ton, and there was Goundry & Co. of St Mary's Gate; J.A, Wardell of Church Walk; Sam Clark's of Vicar Lane; plus others of different sizes, there are surprisingly few dentists in the directories though. Despite the loss of these old enterprises, Chesterfield still makes quality sweets today - there's Willett's of New Whittington (est 1927) who specialise in traditional sweets for the wholesale market. We also have Frederick's, makers of S40 Local's favourite ice cream. There were ice cream makers in the past, the likes of Monfredi Augustine's of Knifesmithgate. Hosiery, socks and stockings were big business for a while in the 19th century, with many local enterprises. It died back though as businesses in the larger mill towns in Lancashire and Yorkshire out-scaled us. Ready to Wear Suits. In 1903 Meshe David Olinsky from Lithuania opened a tailoring business, Cross Tailoring, on Holywell Street, now somewhere under the car park. One of his ideas was to sell ready made suits; another was to change his name, and his company’s, to Montague Burton. Montague hit on a good balance of quality, cost, and price, and started Please mention S40 Local · Page 21

opening other stores, beginning with one in Mansfield. Eventually there were over 400 Burton's. However, Burton's moved their manufacturing, management and warehousing to Leeds and Manchester, leaving Chesterfield behind. You need a bigger population of customers to maximise Burton's idea, so he naturally moved to where the customers and suppliers were, but he got a good start in Chesterfield. Boxes and Packaging. People think of Robinson's as specialising in healthcare products such as surgical dressings, and its founder was in fact a Chesterfield chemist, but it actually began by making boxes for pills. And making boxes and commercial packaging stayed part of the company as they expanded their lines. As well as boxes for medical items, they made boxes for cereals (Quaker Oats, Ready Brek, Sugar Puffs) and soap powders and.... well just loads of products that you certainly will have used. The boxes were made in the Square Box factory on Chester Street near the gasometers, some of which survives: you've probably noticed the green tank on the water tower.

Pottery. We can't talk about manufacturing in Brampton without mentioning pottery. There is some good clay round the local area, often associated with coal seams. This has been true for ages, but the growth of pottery (and brick making) seems to have gone hand in hand with the growth of mining. There were as many as ten commercial potteries in Brampton alone at one stage in the 19th century. Brampton was famous for its salt-glazed 'brown ware', which is made by putting salt on to the items while they're in the kiln. Being in unpretentious Derbyshire the items produced tended to be practical rather than showy. Ginger beer bottles for commercial use, jugs, pots, hot-water bottles: that sort of thing. Although the large commercial potteries have now gone (Pearson's survived till 1994) we still have a quality potter in Brampton, our friend Janine at JMJ Pottery on Chatsworth Road.

Furniture. Looking back at 19th century directories and articles it sometimes looks as though Chesterfield was crammed full of furniture shops. Back then much furniture was made locally, shops had their own staff of joiners, cabinet makers, and upholsterers. In Chesterfield there was Green's, White’s, Todd’s, and of course, Eyres. Eyres had their own factory in Tapton Lane, demolished in 1982. Beer. Brewing is an old industry and Chesterfield had, and still has, a good reputation for beer - “in this town is the best ale in the Kingdom” said Cilia Fiennes in the 17th century - and there have been some big breweries here over time. There were also many malt houses, where barley is allowed to sprout and then dried. The new Brampton Brewery in Chatsworth Road has inherited the name of a previous brewery up on Wheatbridge Road where Matalan is now. Some people may still remember the old brewery building. Still surviving are the Georgian offices of the Scarsdale Brewery on St Mary's Gate. And you may have wondered why the road from the old Royal Hospital to the railway station is called 'Brewery Street' – it's where the Chesterfield Brewery used to be (taken over by Mansfield we believe). Giant Undersea Tunnel Boring Machines. Markham’s built advanced tunnelling machines and tunnelling shields to help dig the London Underground, the Paris Metro, the Moscow Metro and others. They also built two to help dig the channel tunnel: 1300 tons each, 27 feet wide: just huge. Chesterfield has seen industries come and go, adjusting and adapting to the changing times over the years. How people make a living in 2015 would amaze the people of 1915, and the people of say 1715 would call a lot of it witchcraft. What will the people of 2115 think of what we did in 2015? Who knows?

Tea, cakes, jam and Jerusalem Getting to know the Walton WI Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: WI

The UK's Women’s Institute (WI) celebrated its 100th birthday on 16 September this year. It was founded in 1915 during the First World War to educate women in the preservation and preparation of food to help see the UK through the war years. It feels like a very British institution, but was actually founded in Canada in 1897, set up to bring women from isolated communities together and offer training in home economics, child care and some farming tasks that typically fell to the women. During the second World War the WI were at the forefront of education supporting women in the war effort. Today they remain relevant and in tune, as popularity of some of what are thought of as traditional skills and values are fuelled by TV shows like the Great British Bake Off, The Sewing Bee and the Home Front. A new generation of women are keen to pick up these skills and the WI has its role to play in supporting this education in a fun and friendly way. Diana Fagg from the Walton WI explains more. “The WI is a registered charity and consists of a federation that governs how we operate and regions that manage at a more local level. The charity’s primary purpose is still education.” The WI in Derbyshire celebrates its centenary in two years and the Walton branch will play its part in the celebrations, despite being much younger, at a mere 76 years. “The local groups operate independently but follow national governance” adds Diana, “local institutes are governed by their members so there is the flexibility to craft a local branch that fits local needs.”

The national WI even have their own college, Denman College in Oxfordshire. “May Martin, judge on the BBC’s Sewing Bee is a WI member and tutor at the college” says Diana. “Denman is a small country house where the WI runs courses on a wide range of skills including things like cookery, crafts, gift wrapping, silversmithing, walking tours, drama, music; if there’s a need, the WI try to meet it. It’s a busy place with on-site accommodation for those attending courses.”

"It’s not unheard of to have grandmother, mother and daughter in the same group." The ladies at Walton recently attended Denman college, bringing back skills to share with the rest of the group. Other recent activities have included a private Garden Party at Park Hall, a trip down the Canal to the Hollingwood Hub for cake and wine, taking part in an Eisteddfod organised by the Derbyshire Federation, a bring and buy sale to raise funds for charities that support women in deprived parts of the world, plus loads of additional activities. “The WI is changing” Diana adds. “Ages vary widely at institutions, some members are in their teens, some retired and it’s not unheard of to have grandmother, mother and daughter in the same group. Here at Walton our longest serving member has been with the group for over 50 years.” “We somehow manage to be old fashioned but up to date at the same time” adds Diana, “our annual conference sets new

aims such as campaigning for "Care not Custody" for people with mental health problems.” Many of today’s meetings still close with a resounding rendition of Jerusalem, although it is a matter of choice for individual groups, here at Walton we do sing! The Walton group meet at 2pm on the third Wednesday of the month, with regular sub groups including the Book group and Flower arranging. We have tea and cake and possibly a glass of wine every now and then! Remembering our War Heroes. Words: Sheila Young

Imagine for a moment that you are walking past a war memorial in a town a few days after the commemoration ceremonies have taken place in November. There is one solitary wreath of poppies standing upright which draws your attention. Then you see that there are two bottles of beer inside the wreath. You are disgusted at such an act of disrespect and you are determined to remove the offending bottles. However when you look more closely you see a card has been placed under the bottles. It reads….’.this one’s for you mate. I miss you and our Saturday nights. We had some good times. God Bless and Rest in Peace.’ You realise that far from being an act of disrespect it is a tribute to a friend who has died in a recent conflict. It is his ‘act’ of remembering. Is there a ’right’ way to remember? Does it matter as long as it comes from the heart? As the centenary of the First World War approached, millions of pounds were pledged to encourage communities throughout the country to explore their First World War heritage. By remembering and sharing their experiences it was hoped it would deepen their understanding of the impact of conflict. The most visible form of this shared heritage and legacy is the war memorial. There are war memorials in most cities, towns and villages and they form a part of our everyday landscape. This is particularly so at specific commemoration dates when the nation pays its respects to those who have fallen in conflict and yet sometimes we also see people sitting on them, eating their lunch or waiting to meet Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk

a friend or at worst they are vandalised or urinated on by those the worse for wear because of alcohol. When these incidents happen it naturally causes outrage and deep offence. As well as the traditional war memorial, we may also see a row of cottages, a hall, a stained glass window in a church or a lych gate. These are all ways of remembering the men and women who gave their lives in war but all with different forms. From discussions with young people, a series of questions arose. What were the thoughts and feelings of those at home in the aftermath of the war about how to remember the fallen? How did the idea of the war memorial as we know it arise? How were those decisions made and by whom? Who paid for them? Who decided where they would be erected and what form the memorial would take? How was the content of a commemoration ceremony chosen, the words, the music? Whose names were included and whose were not? How do young people feel about war memorials and commemoration ceremonies today?

The Pomegranate Youth Theatre received £25,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project to try to explore some of these questions. ‘Written in Stone’ was created and is being led by Project Managers Sheila Young of Dexter Productions and Carole Copeland from The Pomegranate Youth Theatre and

set out to enable a group of young people to research and explore the heritage and history of their local war memorials and commemoration ceremonies and their relevance to young people today. To discover whose voices were heard and whose were less well represented on war memorial committees. With the help of Chesterfield Museum, Chesterfield Library and Denise Coss, they explored the viewpoints and feelings of The Church, The Establishment, the War Widows, the Mothers and the Veterans. The voices of the soldiers themselves are represented through their letters to home about how they would like to be remembered. The project captured the thoughts of young people and enabled them to work with professional writer Sheila Young, to write and devise a stimulus piece of theatre, culminating in a performance rehearsed and directed by Carole Copeland. This piece was then performed to the Canotila (Calow), Draco (Chesterfield) and Centaurus (Tupton) Explorer Scout groups. Their responses to the piece were collected to form the basis for workshops that will take place in the Autumn. These will be led by professional musicians, Richard Stone and Rob Laughlin and will

enable the young people to learn about

Chesterfield Museum. different forms of commemorative music and then devise and create their own new anthem to be performed at the Chesterfield Museum on November 14th and at future commemorative events. A website has been constructed by Dave Jolliff to collect and record the thoughts and feelings of those taking part and to create a platform for debate and discussion for the wider community. In order to have a lasting record of the project a documentary film has been commissioned and created by Defeye Films. The event at the Museum on November 14th is open to the public where we hope to share our the new anthem and other aspects of the project. The event is free of charge and all are welcome.

Curriculum changes in your child’s school will result in harder SATS test and possibly lower grades than you had hoped for. Will your child keep up or struggle? Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath) Last year there were significant changes to the National Curriculum taught in schools and despite all schools sending home information about the changes, we find many parents are still in the dark over what it REALLY means for their child. Overall there is a much higher expectation with more topic areas and tougher assessments. All aspects of the curriculum have been made significantly more demanding with many items being moved down a level. So previously Year 7 features of maths have now been added to the Year 6 material. Here are a few of the changes:

5 year olds are expected to know their numbers up to 100 (previously they only needed to know up to 20) and number bonds up to 20 (previously 10).

Key Stage 1 children need to tackle simple fractions such as ¼ and ½.

By Year 6 they need to be able to convert decimals into fractions plus adding and subtracting fractions

There is a strong focus on Place Value; that is the true value of each digit within a number e.g. 646 – the 4 is 4x10

Hand writing will be assessed for fluency and legibility. Grammar will include a focus on noun phrases, modals, relative clauses and both passive and perfect verb forms… Clear as mud?! Punctuation includes the use and understanding of commas and apostrophes from Key Stage 1… I know some grown-ups who still struggle with this! As for spelling… many of you have already experienced, in this year’s Year 5, the increasingly complex words the children need to be able to spell. Reading uses more traditional texts such as Dickens and children will need to memorise poetry. Speaking will be assessed for debating and presentation skills.

Schools had to move straight into the changes last September with no time to accelerate the learning of the class. They have done a wonderful job but many children may grade lower as a result. Casa isn’t just a hotel. To Steve Perez, the owner, and the staff that work there it’s a way of life – HOME even! Casa is an asset for Chesterfield, a place for people to meet, eat and stay with a little inspiration from Steve’s homeland, Spain. As Casa celebrate its fifth birthday on 11 November this year, Lucy Daly tells us more about this successful local business. Santiago Garcia Perez, Steve’s father, originally from Spain, ran the Red Lion at Stonedge, introducing Derbyshire to Mediterranean food with his menu of tapas, pepito (Spanish steak sandwich) and paella. Steve worked in Barcelona as a waiter and chef but returned to the UK to set up his business selling imported beers from a van. Changes in cross border shopping laws meant Steve had to reinvent his business and, shortly after, Steve’s break came when his entrepreneurial eye spotted a gap in the ready to drink market for a Vodka based product and he launched VK Vodka Kick. This proved a huge success, with Steve’s company, Global Brands, growing fast and being named as the third fastest growing business by the Sunday Times in 2003 and again in 2005. Through his business dealings Steve often struggled to find suitable places to dine and accommodate his customers. He already owned the site at Lockoford Lane after purchasing it as an investment for VK and decided to combine his own needs for quality accomodation, his passion for food and his Spanish roots, right here in his home town. Casa opened in 2010, offering great quality service, comfortable accommodation, including beds Steve would want to sleep in and locally sourced food, inspired by Spain. Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk

Over the last five years the venue has amassed accolades for many things including its beds, awarded UK Comfiest Bed of the Year in 2012 by laterooms.com, a rating as one of the top 5 hotels in the UK by Trip Advisor, Derbyshire’s highest awarded 4 star hotel in 2013 and 14… the list goes on.

"The name 'Casa', of course, means 'home' in Spanish and that's exactly what I wanted the hotel to feel like - home." Steve Perez, Owner. The accommodation includes four hot tub suites, two of which have private saunas and open balconies overlooking Chesterfield, a place for guests to indulge themselves. For wedding ceremonies and celebrations, Casa offer a fully bespoke service, couples can choose from three licensed rooms for different layouts and experiences. Photographs of the bridal couple are often taken at Steve’s home at Walton Lodge Estate in beautiful surroundings. And for something extra special weddings can be hosted in the grounds of Walton Lodge with a marquee set in the 350 acre estate. Steve’s 350 acre estate at Walton Lodge is only a few miles from the hotel and has become the source of much of the food served – truly grow your own – reducing the food miles and being in control of the quality of the products. Where food can’t be sourced from the family farm, Casa support local businesses, S40 Local advertisers Highfield House Farm for instance providing some meats.

Cocina, Casa’s two rosette restaurant, offers a quality dining experience and a great place for a celebration - intimate or comfortable for larger parties up to twenty. The space is cleverly divided by voile curtains enabling the team to change the spaces making it either cosy for single diners in the hotel, or opening up for larger groups. The à la carte menu varies with the seasons and Cocina have recently launched their autumn menu together with a selection of daily specials. Barca is a more informal lounge bar at Casa, serving great coffee, enticing cocktails and a fine selection of European beers. Tapas are available throughout the day, along with healthy options and salads, free wifi, easy parking a perfect place to meet before meals and events. On match days you can park at Casa for £5, redeemable in Barca against food all day, plus they roll out the ‘Big Green Egg’ and cook pulled pork sandwiches which can be eaten on the terrace and go well with a beer! Casa is a family business and many of the staff have been there from the start, some from Global Brands now work in the hotel. I left Lucy, reminded once again of what an asset Casa is to Chesterfield. If you’ve never been, perhaps it’s time to support this local independent business that’s so successful. Cocina is open seven days a week for dining and they are now taking bookings for Christmas… I know from experience that Cocina delivers on its promises for a family dinner and a celebration. News From Libby's 479 Chatsworth Road Libby Morris, not one to let the grass grow under her feet, has so much going on, so I’m back again as she updates me on the last few months of activity! And it’s not just grass that grows at Libby’s, the team have been awarded “Most Improved Garden” by the Chesterfield in Bloom awards. “A lot of our garden has been grown from seed, sweet peas, perennials and even vegetables used in the cafe. All watered and tended to by hand" explains Libby, “we were up against some stiff competition but a lot of time and effort has gone into the garden so we’re chuffed to bits with the result.” Which incidentally is at the rear of the café and is a lovely relaxing place to sit and enjoy a drink and some food.

Sarah has been designing and selling lace clothing online for many years and is very excited about seeing her products in a local business. Prices start at £28 and items can be tailor-made if required. Sarah’s lace will be available in store from the beginning of November, along with many of the other carefully sourced Christmas lines from Holland, Sweden, Germany and many others. All will be available to view and buy on Libby’s Ladies Night, on Monday 16 November (ticket only). Be sure to call in and book a place. Gilder's 118 Challenge Gilder, the Chesterfield Mitsubishi dealership has raised a massive £3971 for Ashgate Hospice with its 118 Challenge. The team had hoped to raise £1,180 through a sponsored walk, which took in six pubs on a four-mile course, and required participants to dress up as the duo from the 118 118 TV adverts. Dave Littlewood, General Manager at the dealership, said: ‘Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be able to raise so much. It’s a truly fantastic result and I’m so proud of everyone who took part and has given money. A huge thank you to them all. ‘We certainly stood out in our outfits, and

lots of people were stopping in their cars and giving us money, which was really nice. Somebody who saw us from their block of flats waved us over and gave us the contents of a tupperware box of money they had. The pubs we visited had signs explaining what we were doing, too. People have such big hearts here and were so generous – it was a really great experience. ‘The hospice does incredible and inspirational work, so we always like to give it as much help as possible.’ Alison Ward-Foster, the Fundraising Manager at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: ‘It’s absolutely fabulous to have a local business like Gilder support their local hospice. More than 30 people took part and the supporters along the way were incredibly generous. We would like to thank everybody involved. ‘The money raised will make a big difference to the patients and their families. Need a pick-me-up for these darker Autumn evenings? Then look out for the release of ‘The Intern’ starring Robert de Niro and Anne Hathaway, directed by Nancy Meyers (It’s Complicated, The Holiday). De Niro (Meet the Fockers, Raging Bull) plays Ben Whittaker, a seventy year old widower who having had a forty year career (printing telephone directories ‘in the traditional way’), now finds himself lonely, struggling with retirement and yearning to be back amongst ‘commercial’ action. En-route home from his Tai Chi class he sees an advertisement for a Senior's Internship programme with an extremely successful online fashion-based company. Work experience for oldies! He sees this as a golden opportunity to get back into the workplace, to occupy his day, mix with young people, learn about digital technology, exercise his mind and above all, be a useful member of a workforce once again. Ben successfully gets the job after submitting an impressive video of himself and undergoing a series of interviews by fashion conscious ‘en pointe’ staff young enough to be his grandchildren. He is assigned to support company founder and mega-busy Jules Ostin played by Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables, One Day) who really has no time to be babysitting an Intern, let alone one whose teeth may not be his own! Jules, at 32 is the victim of her own success, juggling and struggling to keep abreast of organisational requirements as well as the needs of Paige (JoJo Kushner) her six-year-old daughter and neglected house-husband Matt (Anders Holm). It seems that Jules needs Ben’s wisdom and advice more than she’s willing to admit. Ben is a true gent with impeccable manners, a wealth of experience - both personal and professional, a suit and tie for every occasion and a fully co-ordinated walk-in wardrobe to die for! He soon becomes ‘one of the boys’ giving fashion and love-life advice to the young guns in exchange for lessons on email and social media. The Boys’ road trip to save Jules’ butt is hilarious as are the scenes with Fiona (Rene Russo), the company’s in-house masseuse. From the get-go De Niro is funny, warm and charming and perfectly cast in the role - the chemistry between himself and the charismatic Ms Hathaway is spot on and keeps the audience engaged throughout. 'The Intern’ is humorous and touching in equal measure and demonstrates perfectly that older people have so much to give and share with today’s younger generation. The film’s cinematography is colourful and vibrant; the depiction of a trendy young workforce is spot on. De Niro and Hathaway combined with a good (if not always totally believable) plot, strong supporting cast (Adam DeVine, Zack Pearlman, Jason Orley and Christina Scherer), engaging characters and a huge helping of laugh-out-loud moments make this a very enjoyable film. A great tonic! Should be available on prescription….

Good Mental Health Managing Your Wellbeing

Mental Health issues seem to be attracting media attention at the moment. We’ve all heard the statistics, 1 in 4 people will at some time in their lives experience psychological difficulties. We can talk freely about back pain and even bowel trouble, but share with friends, family or work colleagues that you are struggling to get out of bed, to leave the house, or that sometimes you just cry 'for no reason’, and the silence can be deafening. Talking about how we feel, how we really feel can be so difficult when we don’t understand it ourselves - everyone seems to be getting on with their lives and coping so much better than you are. There are times in everyone’s lives, yes, everyone’s when we just feel overwhelmed, stress at work, difficulties in relationships, loss, or something you can’t quite put your finger on results in us feeling lost, stuck or struggling to cope. Battling on when you feel broken inside and trying to keep it all together - going to work, getting the kids to school, keeping on top of the house when every part of you seems to be screaming to just close the curtains and curl up into a ball can feel like being asked to climb a greasy pole with both hands tied behind your back. Being told, or telling yourself to just ‘get a grip’ really isn’t helpful or do-able. What people need, what we all need at times is help and support both from ourselves and those around us. It might seem odd to think of asking ourselves for some understanding and compassion but all too often when the blackness descends we lose sight of our ‘self’ and the resources and creativity that we possess. All sense of worth and value evaporates. Note to self - everyone is not coping and getting on with life as well as you might think or as amazingly successfully as the exterior might suggest. Page 60 www.s40local.co.uk

So, what can be done? What can you do and what can we all do to get this sorted? The good news is, LOTS! 1. The most important is to recognise that something isn’t quite right. To notice and be aware of yourself and those around you; feeling low or anxious is a lot easier to sort when it’s at a low level and the whirlpool is only just visible on the horizon. All of us experience sadness, stress and tragedy at some time in our lives. The death of a loved one, unemployment, illness, relationship breakdown or whatever else, which naturally and understandably results in emotional distress and upset. These events are part of life and the subsequent emotional responses and feelings are what makes us human; they cannot and should not be avoided but they can certainly be made easier and the potential for longstanding harm reduced. 2. Try to be gentle with yourself and allow yourself the time and space to recover from the trauma - make sure that you do things for yourself that make you feel good - fill the tank back up. 3. For some people, talking about it is a struggle – maybe the thoughts and feelings are too confusing to articulate, so if talking to someone at this point isn’t for you then what is important is that you don’t just pretend that everything is fine. If feelings are repressed and not given a voice, over time they start to toxify - what once was unpleasant and uncomfortable becomes putrid and agonising. So write things down, draw, paint, run, swim, cook, take the dog out, listen to music - whatever helps you. 4. If you feel you do want to talk about it a good place to start is a friend or family member that you feel you can trust and open up to. Talking things through might also allow

that other person to open up to you and say, ‘Actually, I really struggle with that sometimes too’. Raising your hand and speaking up can not only help you but those around you - perhaps they’ve been suffering in silence, just like you, and they too can finally loosen the grip they’ve held around their own throat. However, often people feel they don’t want to ‘burden’ a loved one or they want to discuss things with someone outside their circle. Talking to a trained professional who can help and support you to unpack, explore and find new ways of managing life’s difficulties can be an extremely helpful and empowering step. 5. If you are worried about someone close to you - perhaps their behaviour has changed and they’re isolating themselves or they don’t seem to be ‘themselves’, just ask them how they are and let them know you’re there. If a colleague returns to work after time off to help them deal with a psychological issue, give them a smile, tell them it’s great to see them back and ask them how they are.

You have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.

Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time over winter but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light.

Most perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seed-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seedheads can attract birds..

Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves, and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.

Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.

Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost…

Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.

If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.

If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

10. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let along next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more...! If you have excess vegetables and no freezer space, Transition Chesterfield is still holding monthly produce swaps for anything you’ve either grown or made yourself (jams, chutneys etc.) at our regular Green Drinks.
