Issue no. 69 - Winter 2015

Intro Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Welcome to the Christmas edition and welcome also to a number of new advertisers, all small independents and helping keep our town a vibrant and interesting place to be. Christmas for Brian Lee started well, he was the lucky winner of the Vis Vires watch competition and is pictured below with his new Chesterfield watch from the newly launched Vis Vires range. Huge thanks to James from Vis Vires and also to all those who entered. There is a lot going off over Christmas, plenty to keep us busy, one event we’re helping promote is the Lantern Parade through Walton Dam and Somersall Park on Tuesday 1 December. This year the Britannia will be providing a UV tunnel so don the dayglow to be sure you're seen. Also the Holymoorside Brass Band and the Community Choir will lead carols at the end of the parade. So be sure to get those lanterns sorted in time. We have part 2 of the gift guide, full of great present ideas for Christmas from our local businesses, a few pics of old Chatsworth Road, we have a chat with one of the directors at The Anglers Rest, a community pub in Bamford, details about Chesterfield leading the world in lighting and an update on Monkey Park. At S40 Local HQ we'll be loading up the fire and hunkering down over Christmas with our next edition not due now until the end of January 2016. Enjoy your Christmas, and as 2015 draws to a close I hope it’s peaceful for us all. Joyeux Noel et bonne année. Paul.

Picture The Past Words: Pictures:

Paul Chapman Picture the Past

Looking back to the days before digital photos I can remember my first camera, a manual Praktica SLR. I loaded it with a Black & White film and went to take some photographs, the fountains in the Old Market Square Nottingham, drained of water and filled with chairs, shopping trolleys and the debris of celebrations the previous night... New Years Eve. I took the film home and in my Dad's darkroom, developed and printed the pictures. Imagine that today, no kids running to the camera when a shot has been taken to see what they look like, instead having to wait until the film has come back from the developers. Usually you wouldn't have a clue what was on there as photographs were taken on occasions, films in cameras for months, the pictures coming back to be placed in an album, flicked through when friends and family came round. Today 'images' (not even photographs anymore!) dominate the online world and get stored by the thousand on your PC or cloud, never to be viewed or printed but regularly to be shared on social media, flashing past your friends for a few comments before being filed in the archives... for MI5 to look at! Not so long ago photographic images were individual to the person or family who took them. Well the libraries of the North East Midlands have their own collection of photographs, which recall the history of the local communities. Picture the Past digitally conserves this irreplaceable collection of photographic heritage and

makes it publicly available to search and use online. The vast collection of 115,000 images fully categorised by place, location, date and description in many cases also includes informative and interesting notes describing the event and the historical context. An evolving collection, people are also encouraged to send in their own photographs of historical or local significance. Details of how to do so are included on their website below. The collection covers a wide range of buildings, prominent people, places, events and traditions, but even if you’re not searching for something specific, who isn’t interested to see what their own street or local area looked like 20, 50 or even 100 years ago? And if you’re stuck for a present for a history enthusiast, they also print a range of products using the images: standard prints of all sizes, mugs, mouse mats, prints on canvas, place mats, coasters, greetings cards, postcards... even cushion covers! There might just be the perfect Christmas present in there, an image of an old street, building or place that means so much to someone. Over the next few pages I've picked out a few that I like, including the area in which I live as it looked and how it has changed through the years. Take a browse online and check out the past. All pictures supplied courtesy of Picture The Past DCC

What’s in Your past? Ever wondered what your street looked like 100 years ago, or where your Great-Granny lived before the war? With 115,000 images available online covering Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire over the last 200 years or so there will be plenty to catch your eye! Visit our website and search for YOUR history...

The Anglers Rest

Bamford’s inspiring community hub Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: The Anglers Rest & Sheffield CAMRA

Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk

O

n a recent trip into the Peak District I stopped for breakfast at what transpired to be an interesting and inspiring community hub, the Anglers Rest in Bamford.

Bamford is a small village, nestled between Hathersage, Ladybower and Castleton, a pleasant village but not really on the tourist trail. A survey of the village in 2012, part of the development of the community plan, highlighted how the village had lost many of its community assets over the previous 10 years. Together the community decided to take action and registered the local pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). There are around 400 pubs registered as ACVs across the UK. Today the Anglers Rest runs as a vibrant hub; thriving pub, a café, Post Office and a social space selling locally sourced artists’ works, handmade cards and produce! The back story has a familiar ring, as we hear of pub-co pubs closing down, sold to those with the deepest pockets and reopening as convenience stores. But The Localism Act created an opportunity for residents to nominate assets to protect places that provide a heart to a community. An application, which needs the support of 21 local people, perhaps through a local community group or Parish council, is submitted to the local authority to be considered and if successful, this restricts certain changes of use and should the owners want to sell for change or development the community have the right to bid. Sally Soady, one of the directors of the community-owned Anglers Rest explained how the new community hub came about. “Registering the Anglers Rest as a community asset provided a level of protection for the building, restricting a change of use” explains Sally. “The pub-co could sell to another brewery, but couldn’t turn it into a shop, flats etc.”

“In 2012 the parish council in Bamford, with support from the Peak Park updated the community plan and we realised we’d lost quite a lot from the village. In ten years The Derwent pub had closed, the surgery gone, The Marquise demolished etc.” “We undertook a new community consultation to set out what the village needed to survive; traffic calming, parking, pubs, shop, Post Office, a cafe would be good, somewhere for social activity.” The Derwent pub had been sold with plans for a nursing home and The Anglers was owned and operated by a pubco on short leases and was opening and closing every six months” explained Sally. “Someone suggested we look into buying one of the pubs” says Sally “so the Bamford Community Society was formed and when the Post Office identified that the Post office was no longer viable as a stand-alone business, but could move into an existing business, we put in an expression of interest to run the Post Office. We had a village meeting and launched a community share offer. For people to purchase shares, we needed to raise a minimum of £180k with a maximum of £340k” the pressure was on. “We needed people to commit money. It was a slow news period over the summer and the national newspapers picked up the story and in six weeks we’d raised £180,000. On 19 August 2013 we were interviewed by the Post Office, were awarded the contract to run it and we placed a bid for the Anglers. Our celebrations, however, were short lived as on 20 August a second bid was notified. We started conveyancing immediately. “Our local MP Andrew Bingham got involved and tried to convince the brewery to give us more time to get searches back etc but the brewery said no and went ahead, exchanging contracts with the second bidder. “We thought it was game over, but the developers interest waned when they learnt about the community asset registration on the pub, upsetting their development plans.

Please mention S40 Local · Page 33

Article “Two days later, Andrew successfully persuaded the brewery to offer the pub to the community group. We restarted the purchase process and two months later the pub was ours. “We have 330 shareholders, 50% of which have a share of £250, most of the remainder have £1000 or less invested, 75% live in the village and 80% live in the Hope valley. “We have a board of ten directors who operate and oversee the running of the pub, we employ three full time staff, a general manager and chef who live on site and a front of house position running the Post Office and café plus 25 other part time staff. We’ve created local positions for young people in the village, it’s their first job for many of them, staffing gets difficult when a new academic year starts and they leave for college but we have been able to back fill each time. “In a small community it is amazing the range of skills and resources. The people that ran the B&B agreed to become the mailing address, and became pivotal to the success of the project, the hub of information. One lady who lives opposite came to me saying ‘I'm too old and can't do anything’ but made a fantastic contribution, baking cakes twice and day and bringing it for the volunteers. “To make a project like this work you need technical skills that cover all areas, some people volunteered maybe an hour to talk about accounting etc. It was amazing how it fell into place. “Two years in and our year-end figures show we’ve spent £52,000 with local businesses, fruit and meats from local

farms, we’ve used local building suppliers and paid £145,000 in locals' wages. “We reckon we’ve contributed £200,000 back into the Hope Valley and the pub is still here, we’ve been operating for two years successfully and profitably!” smiles Sally, she’s clearly proud of their achievements. As a Community benefit society profits must go one of three ways, investment into building, interest to shareholders or investment into the local community. “And the project reaps further rewards for the villagers, an opportunity to address some of the issues expressed with the village. “We have plans to look at the traffic and investigate ways to slow people down through the village. “With a higher than average older population and a high number of home based workers, we have social space. We have people now coming in during the day, they use the space to knit, hold U3A meetings and many smaller informal groups meet who previously found this difficult. “The bricks and mortar haven’t changed much, we’ve stripped the carpet from half the pub, sanded the floor, found donated furniture and decorated at minimum cost. The pub now has three distinct areas, the pub (pretty much as it was when they took it on), the Post Office counter, and a small sorting office in one of the old outbuildings. The café also sells locally sourced artists’ works, handmade cards and produce etc. “The café opens 8am Monday to Saturday and from 9am on Sundays, offering hot food from 9am to 3pm each day with drinks

and snacks outside these times. The pub offers food on Wed, Thu, Fri and Sat nights and they offer takeaway nights which have proved very popular with the village.” So what next? “We have two upper floors which are underutilised so we’re considering what we could do with those” explains Sally. “We’ve also been successful in obtaining Lottery funding which will enable us to replace the roof and some of the windows”. “I didn’t like the future prospect of a village without a Post Office or a café. I like the money staying local and being returned to the village and it’s exciting to think what we can do with the new investment. It’s now great to feel the village is in control of a small part of our environment and is supported by the local residents. Our future isn’t decided by a group of businessmen in London who probably couldn’t put a pin on the map close to Bamford.” Bamford is not generally a location people travel to, but if you’re passing on the way to Ladybower why not call in and check it out, there is bike parking and a tool station out back. Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club has often been seen taking a coffee! Please mention S40 Local · Page 35

Chesterfield City of Lights Words: Trevor The Ink Illustrations: Sally Anderson

D

id you know that Chesterfield was one of the first towns in the UK to have electric street lighting?

We had electric lights up and running on the 8th October 1881. Godalming down in Surrey just pipped us at the post by a couple of days, starting their trial on September 26th, 1881. But their initial set-up was a bit of a failure and the original supplier had to pull out in December. Our installation wasn't totally problem free, but it did the job. Actually the two initiatives, ours and Godalming's, have similarities. They both started when the town corporations fell out with their local gas supplier. In Chesterfield's case this was a dispute with the Chesterfield Water Works and Gas Light Company. This was a private company set up under its own Act of Parliament that had a water reservoir at the top of Pothouse Lane and a gas works at the bottom. Pothouse Lane, sometimes called Potters Lane, was the old name for Foljambe Road and the gas works was about where the Lidl store is now. They made gas from coal, which is how gas supplies worked before North Sea 'natural' gas arrived in the 1970s. Some of our readers may remember the distinctive smell of coal gas. Gas lighting in Chesterfield actually began in 1824, with a single privately-owned lamp in the Market, fed with gas from a cellar under what is now Peak Pharmacy. That first lamp stand, built and run by a Mr Joseph Bower, was eventually moved to outside St Mary's Church. (It was recently damaged in a gale but the council tell us it's being repaired by specialists and should be back in a few months.) It demonstrated that the job could be done, and so the Gas company was set up in 1825 to supply gas (and water) to the corporation. Things went successfully for many years, but in 1881 two events occurred. The corporation put the gas company’s rates bill up - from £325 to nearly £800, based on the company's use of land for piping and 'standards' (lamp posts). And the gas company put their prices up. We are not sure which happened first, but anyway a quarrel had begun which rapidly got worse. There were loud accusations by both sides. The quality of the gas had declined, said some folk. The other side replied that the corporation hadn't taken into account the expense of lighting and extinguishing the lights every night – a job done by hand, by men going up ladders. Others pointed out that the gas company's prices were much higher those of companies supplying other towns; and also that their directors were paying themselves too much. And so on. Anyway the corporation declined to pay more so the gas company simply turned off the supply to the lamps at the end of September. This was years before the invention of British

Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk

Summer Time so sunset was early and people quickly found themselves bumping around the streets in the dark. There were complaints and worries about effects on crime and on trade, and there were 'indignation' meetings to protest. The corporation looked around for alternatives and put up gas oil (i.e. paraffin) lamps in strategic spots. But it was suggested that it might be possible to light the town using electricity. Electric lights had been around for some years – there'd even been some temporary electric lighting set up in Chesterfield to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales on a visit back in 1871 – but technology had improved and electric lights were now being used in industry. They could be made brighter than gas lights which enabled night shifts. And they were easier to set up and manage - you don't need pipes, and leaks are not a problem. Some local companies were already using it. So the corporation Watch and Lighting Committee got the Hammond Electric Light and Power Supply Company of London to see if they could install an electric lighting system. Hammond's team put a steam engine (all of 8 horse power) and a dynamo in the disused Theatre Royal, about where the library is now, using water drawn from the Hipper. The trial was a success and was gradually scaled up from the original 8 arc lamps to a system that had 15 miles of cable, 12 arc lamps and 178 'Lane-Fox incandescent lamps' - lamps with wire filaments, which were cutting edge technology at the time, from an inventor with the awesomely Victorian name of St George William Lane Fox-Pitt. The old gas standards (lamp posts) were used to hang the lights from and to support overhead cables.

lamp posts! They also placed a privatelysubscribed gas lamp of the latest design in the Market near the Angel to show that they could still compete: an interesting echo of how gas lighting had first started in Chesterfield. Local businesses were of two minds. Coal was an important industry locally, and coal gas was a by- product of the coking process. Supporting electric light could undercut coal. On the other hand, electricity generators were powered by steam engines which were fired by - coal. After a couple of years of mostly successful operation in lighting the town (plus generating a lot of heat in arguments) the contract came up for renewal in 1884. The gas company got back in the game and put in a bid at a reduced price, but Hammond and Co. surprised people by withdrawing. The reason they gave was they could make more money from their equipment by supplying private users, and so they wanted their generators elsewhere. By spooky coincidence Godalming's supplier, Siemens, also ended their contract in 1884 – they couldn't make money without getting more private customers. And so both towns went back to gas. Chesterfield stayed on gas for years till 1901 when the corporation built an electricity generating station by the old Chain Bar on Chatsworth Road. Electricity was back to stay this time...and there were already plans to power the tram network electrically. The technology had moved on and matured, and Chesterfield's electric lighting experiment had played a real part in this. (We have no idea what happened down there in Godalming... they may still be on gas ).

The initiative attracted national attention with visits from other towns to see how it was done. Barnsley corporation, for example, came down to look, were impressed, and went back to set up their own system. Not everyone liked the lamps though. They buzzed and sparked and flickered, which was scary for people – this was all new and strange technology. The little Lane-Fox lamps were a bit too dim at just 15 candle power; the bigger arc lamps were too bright – 2000 candles - and too variable. The placing of the electric lamps was not ideal either – the manager of the Angel Hotel, a coaching inn sited where Meadowfresh is today, complained that his end of the market and Angel Yard were in darkness and his cabs were being broken into and used for immoral purposes. The gas company certainly didn't like the lamps; they attempted to charge the corporation a rent for using their old gas

Article Advertorial

"Few parents actually realise the importance and relevance of a minimum of a GCSE Grade ‘C’ in English & Maths to their child’s complete future in life." Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath)

To young people doing their GCSE’s is just another part of their schooling. They have been through SATS tests and this often appears just another test that they have to take. As parents we support them and hope they do well, but in reality the grade they achieve in Maths or English is the pivotal point in their entire future! For example with a Maths and English grade C or above more employers will consider them for work. Colleges require a minimum of a grade C and often schools require it for sixth form studies and ‘A’ levels. Universities require it for degree programmes whatever their ‘A’ level grades in other subjects. A Grade ‘C’ is pivotal to their lives, their self confidence and further opportunities from age 16 to around 20, when experience in work or A levels will count more than GCSE grades. However many students and their parents take the "cross the fingers and hope" attitude to these all important grades. In larger class groups with teachers doing their best to engage all the students, both those willing to learn and those disruptive few, it is easy for students to be overlooked and not fulfil their potential and once they are done... it is done! The student is ‘marked in an ‘over a C grade’ or ‘under a C grade’ group. Granted there can be retakes but who enjoys those! In these days it can be re

marked, but then there is the anguish of the wait and the hope that it might ‘scrape’ a ‘C’ grade at the end of it. Students who have some ambition for higher education, good apprenticeships or company training schemes should be nurtured, supported and helped through the first educational test of their lives where second place is nowhere. Until it happens we, as parents, don’t know how our child will cope with exam nerves, the required systematic, logical approach to exam questions and how to calm their nerves on the day. At Kip McGrath all students in their GCSE classes achieved grades ‘A*’ to grade ’C' in last summer’s exams. Now it is opening the doors to the next tranche of GCSE students wanting to sleep at night knowing they’ll be able to get at least the basic grade ‘C’ they require. Often it is a gap in their knowledge, missed sections and a lack of self-belief in their abilities that can let students down, so as well as following the curriculum we deal with those issues as well. We can do a free assessment for your year 10 or year 11 student and give them a place in our expanding GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature and GCSE Maths groups and assure their future success and higher earning potential for life.

Help your child go far with Kip McGrath Our qualified teachers create individual tutoring programmes for your child, using proven Kip McGrath methods.

Wards Shoes Returns to Chesterfield Words: Paul Chapman

I

n November Wards Shoe Shop makes a welcome return to Chesterfield, widening the range of brands available in the town centre.

Justin and Alison Mansfield are the third generation of the Ward family, The family business being established over 60 years ago. Samuel Ward was a cobbler in Worksop, but it wasn’t until he was joined by Eric Ward in 1954 that the business, Wards Shoe Shops was formed, concentrating on selling footwear. Today they have their Head Office in Matlock and stores in Belper, Bakewell, Worksop and now Chesterfield. Wards had a shop in The Pavements from 1982 to 1988, visited by Lady Diana as she and Charles opened The Pavements. The Chesterfield branch closed when the family decided to relocate and takeover two stores, in Bakewell and Belper. Both had previously been shoe shops and are still an important part of the business today. Wards Shoes employs 33 people, some of the staff have been part of the business for more than 40 years. Alison and Justin’s positivity about the move to Chesterfield is infectious. “Chesterfield is doing really well” says Justin, “the closure of the Co Op was unfortunate for the town but we feel, leaves a hole in the market for good quality branded footware.” “You only have to take a look at the town centre to see it’s thriving” Justin adds, “many make the point that the out of town retail is having a negative impact on the town centre but I don’t know that I agree. The larger businesses now have good sized retail space which leaves the smaller units for quality independents to move in. We feel sure the changes are for the better for both the small and the large businesses.”

Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk

“We offer a full fitting service, good quality footwear and have a great range of products for all the family from birth, as the kids grow through school and for men and women, plus a few new brands on the shelves for those looking for something more fashionable” says Alison. Brands available from Wards include Rieker, Gabor, Tamaris, Josef Seibel, Ecco and Marco Tozzi plus new brands for the first time, widening the range and styles on offer for men, from Ikon and Base London. Women's new ranges include Ruby Shoo and Emu. Kids brands include a fitting service and brands such as Startrite, LelliKelly and Bobux, these above represent just a few of the brands on offer. With the closure of the Early Learning Centre it’s good to see a new business opening, ten new people recruited bringing 10 new jobs to Chesterfield, the refit work all being done by tradesmen local to town. “We’re excited about the opening” says Justin, “we are part of town, we already shop in town and we’re proud to have a business that’s part of it again. We’re not a chain and are family run, Alison and I will be working in the store and we’re looking forward to getting to know the people of Chesterfield.” By the time you read this the shop should be up and running in The Pavements and you can be sure of a warm welcome should you call in. ‘Cutting’ Edge Style & Service New to S40 Local: KH Hair Words: Paul Chapman

K

H Hair, award winning stylists, are a new advertiser to S40 Local but not new to Chesterfield. They’ve had the salon on Cavendish Street, for 13 years and are perhaps one of S40 Locals largest independent businesses to advertise, with 22 branches across the East Midlands. There is no hint of large business at the salon, the eight staff are local and the feel is very intimate. As I sit with Helen, joint manager, the staff clearly know all the customers and it’s important they feel at home. The salon is just round the corner from the Crooked Spire and although refurbished not long ago it is clearly in an old premises, raising its hat to the past, retaining the old shop front and inner staircase. Helen Sitwell manages the salon with Dawn and together they split their time between the Chesterfield and Arnold, Nottingham branches. I ask if the two feel the same? “Chesterfield customers show a fantastic loyalty to stylists” says Helen, “they put their trust in you. “Chesterfield also has more of family feel and is a bit more laid back, the atmosphere at Arnold is perhaps a little more fast paced, we do have customers who avoid Fridays there as it’s too hectic, we get busy here but it always feels more relaxed.” KH Hair runs a series of internal awards and they are proud to have taken awards for Excellence in Retailing, Excellence in Service twice and Salon of the Year twice. “The team of eight offer colouring, styling, cuts, perms, dressing and colour couture – with a five star level of customer service. As well as cuts we offer a small selection of products from Sebastian by Wella, Nioxin and ghd styling irons. “Dawn and myself are joint directors, Charlotte our advance stylist, Sandy and Sarah, senior stylists, Megan our young stylist who’s recently qualified, Michelle is presently on maternity leave but due back soon and Jane is our receptionist. “We are constantly investing in the team through training, covering the latest techniques, trends styles etc. KH Hair run our own academy taking stylists straight from school to work through their apprenticeships. We invest in our team from the very beginning, the importance of customer service is integral from day one. The majority of staff stay with

Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk

us and are keen to stay within the group, our spread of branches means people can move when needed or work between the branches for some variety.” Helen runs the artistic team at KH Hair and is responsible for the styles submitted for awards and competitions within the trade. This year they made the final of British Hairdressing Awards, one of the last four from 8000 entries. “My team do all the images on promotional material, magazines, flyers, brochures, websites, we present on stage at trade fairs, do the in salon training for the group, plus we have recently travelled to Los Angeles for photo shoots for the Sebastian product range from Wella.” “At KH Hair you'll find a warm friendly welcome, whatever the time of day, a coffee, tea, beer or wine perhaps. We're in it for the long term, once you've visited we’re sure you’ll be back again, and again, and again ... let us get to know you and develop that long term trust you need in a hairdresser” finishes Helen. KH Hair can be found next door to fellow S40 Local advertiser Coffee St. Be sure to mention S40 Local when you call.

Founded their first barbers shop in 1920 in Long Eaton Nottingham. Today 22 branches across the East Midlands. Small, local and independent. 5 awards for Salon of the Year. (In house KH Hair awards)

really WHAT'S HAPPENING ... at St

We are an independent preschool based in the rooms at St John’s since 2009 (formerly in Walton Village Centre). We offer government funded places for two to five year olds. We are run by a small, friendly team of staff with many years of experience in Early Years provision.

We are lucky enough to be allowed to use the facilities at St John’s to enhance our celebrations and hold our nativity in the church each Christmas. For more information, pop in during our weekday morning sessions or give us a call on 07724081444.

Please see the Ofsted website for our most recent inspection report.

Teenagers, GOD and Cake You may have heard of the Alpha Course. 12 young people recently did the Youth Alpha course together. We asked Rosie (15) and Jessie (14) Glossop for their thoughts.

Why did you join the course? We joined to strengthen our faith and learn more about what it actually means to be Christian. We have always come to church with our parents, but not always known everything about the faith. The group was a good size, as plenty of views and questions came up, but it didn't feel overcrowded or like not everyone got their say. What difference has it made to you? Our faith is stronger now, and some of our questions about Christianity have been answered. We learnt about a lot of things, such as prayer, evidence of Jesus' resurrection and how to read the bible. Things like that will always be relevant, and are key things of the Christian faith. Topics like Jesus' resurrection are interesting to talk about, with all of the scientific advances in the world. Learning how to read the bible was a really good thing for us, as sometimes you can look Page 54 www.s40local.co.uk

at such a big book and have no clue where to start or what to do with it even!

Did you need to be a churchgoer to attend the course? No, some of the members were not churchgoers, but still were completely involved and got as much out of it as everyone else did. What would you say to a young person about attending a Youth Alpha course? It is definitely a good idea! Whether you class yourself as a Christian or not, the course will develop your ideas on Christian faith and what it's all about. Youth Alpha has finished but everyone continues to meet fortnightly on Sunday night. They have fun together, talk about life issues and faith and eat cake. They are friendly and would welcome anyone in year 10-13 who wanted to join them.

Monkey Park

Brampton's new community hub open for business Words & pictures: Paul Chapman

M

onkey Park, the new community hub in Brampton, is open. The café is selling a range of great tasting food, the bakery is producing freshly baked bread and the cycle workshop is repairing and selling recycled bikes from as little as £20. A small ceremony took place (pictured) on Saturday 10 October, no gold chains or dignitaries, with Aaron, who lives on the street, cut the ribbon and business started. Simon Redding, one of the four directors at the community enterprise, explained, “Aaron asked if he could open it for us, he’d been helping sort the place out to get it ready and as the project has the community at its heart, it seemed right and fitting that someone from the community should also open it.” When I arrived at 3 o'clock to chat to Simon the team were taking a breather after a fantastically busy day. Over lunch every table had been occupied on what was a rather dismal day weather wise, and as we sat, people were calling in for a last quick drink before the doors shut at 4pm. So, the community cafe is up and running, a place where people can come and have a coffee, a chat with their neighbours, just get to know who's who and what’s going on in the area. Prices are affordable for most, a glass of squash for 30p, a cake and a coffee for less than £2. However, barista coffees are also on sale from their shiny new machine. The bakery is being run by Peter Fairhall, another director, previously of the ‘Gingerbread Boy’ on Chatsworth Road. His bakery on the premises sells freshly cooked bread, pastries, sausage rolls, quiches etc and also supplies the café. He also plans to supply other local businesses in the future from his base at Monkey Park. The cycle workshop, which opens on Saturdays, is run by Director, Alastair Meikle, offers cycle repairs and is selling recycled bikes from as little as £20. These are cycles that have been donated and brought back to life with any necessary repairs, new tyres, brakes etc, whatever is needed to make them Page 58 www.s40local.co.uk

safe and rideable. They are not new but might provide a mode of transport for someone who perhaps can’t afford a new bike. Their mechanics are City & Guilds trained to make sure the bikes are safe. Although only open on Saturdays, you can drop your bike off at any time; just leave clear instructions for the guys at the cafe and once fixed you can come and collect it. The four Directors (the fourth being Simon’s wife Christine Redding) are pleased with the way things are going, “We’re very happy with progress since opening” Simon says, “we have six local people now employed part time, all who live within half a mile of Monkey Park.” Now in week five, they are breaking even financially. It’s part of the approach to the business, that they are open about the finances, as any profits are to be returned to the benefit of the local community. “The upstairs space will soon be available as an open workspace, on a membership basis, members will be able to drop in and use the space. We have our first tenant signed up from the beginning of December so part of the space will be available from this date” explains Simon. “The whole space will be opened up as soon as we can complete the renovations work, being an old bathroom showroom, there were a lot of bathrooms and showers to take out! This will also bring in additional revenue as people join the project and as members use the space”, Simon adds “If you want to get involved and support Monkey Park, we need help, from brushing the floors to being a director and helping to steer the project.”

Community Organisers Operating in Boythorpe, Newbold and Dunston, Holme Hall and Loundsley Green are a team of Chesterfield Community Organisers, these guys knock on doors and their role is to get a better understanding of the local community by asking people three questions. “What do you like about where you live? “What issues do you have? “What would you like to change or what is missing from the area?”

From the answers, they will start to explore further what people think and whether or not others feel the same. They are a small team of three, Alan, Rachel and Natasha. Alan joined us in the café. He added “the role can be as simple as sitting in the cafe and talking to someone, talking to local residents in the library, pub, launderette, shops or in independent shops. It’s just about getting an understanding of the needs of the people who live and work locally”. Monkey Park will be working with this existing team and plan to expand into Brampton and the surrounding area. The team need some volunteers, who will receive plenty of support and training. If you’re interested drop into Monkey Park.

Community Economic Development One of the projects being enabled by Monkey Park is a Community Economic Development (CED) project.

What do you like about where you live? What issues do you have? What would you like to change or what is missing from the area?

Over the next few months, we're looking to join up local businesses with the local community to create new economic, social & environmental benefits. “I’ve seen projects like this have massive success in areas, making great change and all in response to community involvement, meeting people's immediate requirements. We'd like to understand why local services aren't used by our community as much as they could be and what could be improved to make them more appealing”. Simon says "Local businesses and the community have worked together well in other areas and we hope to replicate that here. For instance Hasland has seen the community working well together, helping to redesign road infrastructure problems that threatened the livelihood of the shops in the centre. There is a massive job to do, but it’s making a start that’s often the hardest part. Response from local businesses has been very positive so far”. Using Monkey Park as a community base, the group are engaging people and have advice available from national experts. The Cafe is open 9am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday and the Cycle Workshop Saturday only 9.15am-3pm. They can be found at the corner of Chester Street and Clifton Street opposite the park. Why not pop along and see what’s going on for yourself!

"To be named Pub of the year is a phenomenal surprise. It's all about the people that come in. We have the time to make them happy and try our hardest to do so. Knowing that this is recognised with the award is fantastic. We have beautiful decor and have a huge variety of local beers and drinks as well as competitive prices." Stephanie Alston, The Manor at Brampton.

Coffee Street Best Newcomer (2) "We weren't expecting to win. We had only been open a month when we were nominated and we’ve been working so hard that we almost forgot about it. It’s just fantastic and makes the hard work and long hours worthwhile. I’d say to anyone thinking about opening their own café or restaurant to commit yourself and just go for it." Daniel Carrington, director, Coffee Street

“It’s always wonderful to receive awards, especially when you are in the company of other great shortlisted restaurants. Here at Casa we always try and put our customers first so it feels extra special when they make their voices heard in such a brilliant way. Cocina focuses on both the food product and the customer – using the best quality locally sourced ingredients in the kitchen, and friendly, professional service in the dining room.” Steve Perez, owner, Casa Hotel.

It's lovely to think that people have recognised the work that we do to promote both Northern Tea Merchants and also the glorious town in which we are based. The business has been based here for three generations. We have 70% of the population within an hour and a half of Chesterfield which is great when you're delivering food. Chesterfield has changed so much in the last 20 years. It now has to be a serious consideration for anyone thinking of setting up a food business." Garden Things for the Winter Words: Colin Harrison Pictures: Robert Nixon Betts

1.

Prune fruit trees (hard fruit only, like apples and pears) and bushes growing in the open (i.e. not trained against a wall). There’s all sorts of advice as to how to do this, but the general aim is to end up with something like an inverted wine-glass shape, allowing light and air to reach all parts of the plant.

2.

Take cuttings of deciduous trees, shrubs and currant bushes (you can use some of the prunings). If you’ve not tried it before, why not give it a go? It costs hardly anything (a little compost), and is very satisfying. Even the most experienced of gardeners won’t get all their cuttings to root, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first few times.

3.

Once all the plants have died back, check to see if any of the revealed paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days.

4.

If it snows heavily, knock it off or gently shake branches to prevent them breaking under the weight. Try not to stand underneath while you do this!

5.

Check to see if any paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days. Also clean and (where applicable) sharpen tools; book the lawnmower in for a service.

6.

Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all.

7.

Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.

8.

If buying growing plants as Christmas presents, even the short journey from the shop to the car can damage them if the weather is cold, so make sure they’re well-wrapped. The same applies when delivering them to the recipient.

9.

If you want to get children interested in gardening, there are lots of books (and even tools) aimed at different age ranges which would make good presents. Never be too dogmatic about when and how things need to be done – don’t insist on dragging them outside in the cold and wet to do something just because it’s the ‘correct’ time of year. Plants can’t read calendars…

10. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.
