Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe Help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight They know that Santa's on his way He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh And every mother's child is gonna spy To see if reindeer really know how to fly And so I'm offering this simple phrase To kids from one to ninety-two Although it's been said many times, many ways Merry Christmas to you

Intro

Hi and welcome to a very festive version of S40 Local. This final week has been really busy, it feels like the Christmas Fairy crashed into the office!

If you would like to advertise, list a classified item, tell us about your local event, contribute in any way or simply want to get in touch please see below.

Over the next few weeks it's likely we'll all be out and about buying presents (locally) and preparing for Christmas and whatever traditions observed over the festive period.

Mobile: 07764 80 10 80 Email: paul@s40local.co.uk

This year during Advent we (at S40 Local) are going to try and do one extra kind thing every day and aim to be a bit more laid back! We might drive more considerately and let more people out from side roads, hold a door open, do our bit for charity and take food to the food bank. We will, of course, try and source as many presents and as much food as possible from local shops: butchers, farm shops, milkmen or the market, and we’ll look to see how we can reduce the amount of Christmas waste piled up outside the back door by Boxing Day!

I'm sure there are many ways we can do our bit to feel a little less stressed, a bit more positive and possibly cause a smile here and there. So, back to this edition: we have part II of the gift guide with some great ideas, past and present Christmas traditions, business news from Libby and The Manor Spa, news on Chesterfield becoming a University town, we meet jazz band Washington Whirligig, we’ve a couple of festive recipes and some hints and tips for lessening the effects of Christmas indulgence, plus check out the classifieds for some recycled present ideas. We'll be having a slight break over Christmas, so our next edition won't deliver until the end of January. Whatever you do over Christmas enjoy it, relax a bit and we'll see you in 2017. Merry Christmas, Paul and all the team at S40 Local. Contact Paul on: t: 07764 801080 e: paul@s40local.co.uk

A Facelift for The Manor Spa Christmas party coming up, lost for gifts for your loved one? The Salon at The Manor has been updated, extended and is ready to spoil you. Words: Paul Chapman

I

caught up with Lisa Smith, Business Development Manager at The Manor to find out what’s new. “We’ve increased the space available, so we now have two double treatment rooms for couples, friends or Mum and Daughter to enjoy treatments together” says Lisa. “The spa has always been a little tight and we struggled to offer a relaxing space. Now we have a new attractive lounge area for dining and afternoon tea, no longer is there any need to go downstairs into the bar area for food. It’s great to be a selfcontained spa, we can look after people for their time with us.” The Spa at The Manor is full of character, beamed ceilings, and nooks and crannies, but then a 16th Century Manor House should have character, it all adds to the warmth and welcoming feel of the new space. There are packages available at the Manor Spa to suit all budgets. The current Revive Package at £35 consists of two treatments and use of the leisure facilities which includes swimming, gym, sauna, steam room or, if you’re feeling energetic, you can take part in any of the classes at the gym. The Luxury Spa Day includes two luxury treatments, lunch and Prosecco for £80 and there are several other packages to choose from. Check out the website (themanoratbramptonspa. com) where there are details of all the pamper days, plus get ready to party, nails, spray tans, eye lashes and a whole range of beauty services, using all the world leading products including

Dermologica, Shellac and Nouveau Contour and all items that make excellent Christmas Gifts. If you can’t find exactly what you’re after The Manor offers vouchers for use in any of the group's businesses which include The Manor, The Manor Spa and The Fox & Goose Inn at Wigley. If you fancy a treat for yourself between now and Christmas the Spa is also open Thursday and Friday evenings until 7pm, just in time to get ready for the Christmas party. Wedding Wonderland at The Fox & Goose. The sister business to The Manor, The Fox & Goose Inn will be transformed into a Winter Wedding Wonderland on the weekend of the 14 and 15 January 2016. The Fox will be showcasing their wedding packages, the teepee set out for a bride and groom so people can see first-hand what the team are capable of at The Fox. Their wedding coordinator, Sadie Chapman, will be on hand to show people around. They will be opening the new function room, the Abbey Suite and the whole place will be spruced up with new décor and carpets planned for the New Year. Throughout the weekend you will be able to enter the Manor's Win a Winter Wedding Competition. There will be one lucky winner and runner up prizes of £500 off your wedding!

If you’re planning to tie the knot, be sure to pop up to The Fox between 11am and 3pm, on the weekend of the 14 and 15 Jan.

Past Traditions Words: Trevor The Ink

M

We wish you a Merry Christmas And a Happy New Year A pocket full of money, and a cellar full of beer, And a good fat pig to last you all the year.

any of the customs surrounding the Christmas holidays actually began with or were shaped by the Victorians. The Christmas tree for example. For centuries it was customary to decorate houses with branches of evergreens – to “deck the hall with boughs of holly”. Sometimes small trees were used too. But having a heavily adorned tree as the centrepiece of the decorations was a German custom, and only became popular when Queen Victoria and Prince

Albert set up Christmas trees at Windsor in the 1840s. Victoria had several trees at the castle, with large ones in both her and Albert's apartments. The trees were eight feet tall, had angels on the top, and were festooned with coloured ribbons and candles. They were put up on Christmas Eve, never earlier, and the finishing touches were made by Prince Albert himself. Each branch was heavy with sweets and treats: cakes and gingerbread, and 'trays of bonbonniers'; around the base were piles of toys for the children. Page 20 www.s40local.co.uk

The idea spread and trees became a popular Christmas feature for ordinary people too, including at Chesterfield. Even if there wasn't a tree at home there were many set up in schools, hospitals and other places. But there doesn’t seem to have been an outdoors ‘corporation’ Christmas tree at Chesterfield before the 1930’s, when the Parks Department set one up outside the parish church. In later years they put up a large one outside the Town Hall, where the memorial is now. The ceremonial lighting up of the tree and other illuminations, still a very popular event today, seems to be a post war invention... do any of our readers know when it started? Anyway, in Victoria’s day no seasonal event was complete without its own tree, and golly were there lots of events! Every sort of group to which people belonged held a Christmas lunch or dinner or dance. Frequently they held two events – one for their own members, and a special one for charity, often specially for the poor children of the borough. So as a citizen of Chesterfield in, say, the 1890's you could expect to go to Christmas events organised by your factory or workplace, your union, your church or chapel, and your sporting clubs. If you were a child there were Christmas events organised by your school and Sunday school, by your father’s trades union, and by charities such as the Workers Social Unions, and numerous ad-hoc ‘treat committees’. These events were surprisingly big affairs, often treating several hundred children at once, but sometimes, as with the North Ward Workers’ Social Union, treating upwards of a thousand kids, all being

fed, entertained, and each one going home with some small gift. The NWSU even sent out packages of gifts and food to any children too ill to attend, with things like pork pies, sweets, and oranges. The biggest event was the annual Mayor’s Christmas Treat. This was often held at the Stephenson Hall, and could cater to over 1,200 kids, sometimes in several sittings. As well as food, the kids were entertained with singing, dancers, and acrobats. The excited guests were served and kept in line (no nonsense allowed) by squads of senior girls from St Helena’s school. Even if you were in the hospital or workhouse you would have an event. The Chesterfield Workhouse would always give its inmates a full Christmas meal of roast beef and plum pudding, with ale or tea, a clay pipe and tobacco, and little gifts for the workhouse children. Notice that the meal was roast beef. The food that Victorians associated with Christmas was not goose or turkey, but beef; followed by plum pudding with rum sauce. All the beef was local, and in the run up to Christmas there was much public interest in the showing and choosing of the best ‘Christmas Beef’ animals at the Fat Stock Shows in the market square. Special awards were given for the finest cattle, and butchers would compete to be able to sell meat from prize winning animals. To pay for their meat people would often join Christmas Beef or Christmas Goose clubs run by the butchers: you’d pay a small amount every month. Other shopkeepers had similar arrangements to help people pay for their goods; some even ran themselves like miniature mail-order catalogue companies, complete with local agents (Christmas saving clubs continue today, of course). Entertaining the kids was important, then as now, and two things children really looked forward to were the pantomimes and the circus. There was a permanent circus on Corporation Street, and others would set up marquees at Queen’s Park, with elephants, trapeze artists, acrobats, and clowns. As well as pantomimes at the Hippodrome on Corporation Street and other local venues, train companies would put on excursions to see the shows in Sheffield or Nottingham. A trip to see the ‘The Old Woman who lived in a Shoe’ in Sheffield in 1886 would cost you 2 shillings (1st Class), with children under 3 free; but it would take you over an hour to get to Sheffield. Leaving at 3pm you’d not get back to Chesterfield (with a bunch of tired children, and a walk home still to do) till long gone midnight. People were tough in those days!

Looking through Victorian descriptions of Christmas you see evidence of older traditions popping up. For centuries lords of the manor would hold open house for their tenants on Christmas day, providing food and ale and entertainment, and this custom continued in many places including Chatsworth. Public entertainment and singing was also a big deal. Parties of 'waits' (carol singers) would go from house to house and farm to farm. There were also groups of 'guizers', people who (as told by 18th century Rev. Samuel Pegge) “go about at Christmas, disguised, for sport and merriment, in fantastic dresses” and “dance and sing to divert the company, and expect some gratuity”. Sounds more like Halloween! These waits and guizers were not always welcome; their requests for money or gifts could be intimidating, and there are records of fights and stone throwing – both at and by the entertainers. Not very Christmassy.

The roads are very dirty, the pocket very thin Please mister master, chuck a penny in. If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do, If you haven't got a ha'penny, then God bless you Events continued till Twelfth Night. There was an annual Boxing Day Ball in the market hall, and ‘boxes’ were given to anyone who provided people with a regular service during the year; postmen, errand-boys, knocker-uppers, and the like (a custom which still lives, just). Boxing day sports happened too; football, races, and hunt meets. Christmas meal events for kids continued right up till New Year; organisers seem to have staggered these, and poor parents might see their nippers fed and entertained for free for much of holiday week. Other charitable work continued too, with gifts of practical items like free sacks of coal for the poor and old. For most people though it was straight back to work. The main sense you get from reading old accounts of the season is that, religious aspects aside, the real focus of Christmas was on peoples’ families, especially the children. The details may have changed a bit, but that’s still true today. It’s a traditional attitude well worth continuing. So, whatever your plans – Merry Christmas, and A Happy New Year from S40 Local.

This is the second year Libby's have taken on the challenge of decking the halls of Casa. Last year it was so successful and the feedback from customers so overwhelming they were approached to sprinkle their Christmas magic again. However, the size of the job has increased ten fold, requiring a trip to Germany to source the decorations and a dedicated creative Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk

group, leaving a team back at the ranch on Chatsworth Road to keep on top of the cafe and shop. Last week some 5000 baubles arrived and Casa's bar, restaurant and function rooms have been transformed by the Christmas fairy's wand! Reflecting Casa's rich colour scheme the displays look fabulous. If you get chance to call in over the festive period, be sure to take a while to appreciate the time and effort that's gone into the handmade decorations.

Christmas Traditions

started thinking about a Christmas article in October, (that’s how pulling together a printed mag for Christmas goes…) and wanted to write something that shared what Christmas means and how people celebrate in S40.

I wasn’t sure why this was important to me and why it felt so central to Christmas, so as usual I got on the PC and consulted Google! What I realised was that although it’s not a religious celebration for everyone, it is a time that friends and families come together and an important time for strengthening bonds and relationships. It goes deeper than that; traditions can be positive psychologically and emotionally, they provide a source of identity; offer comfort and security; teach values; add rhythm and seasonality to life; pass on cultural and religious heritage; connect generations and create lasting memories. Here we share some of your Christmas traditions.

"My kids buy a new bauble each, every year. So when they leave home my Christmas tree will be a memory of every year from when they were little xx” Katy Towers

“I met my husband on the 8 December, so every year we put our decorations up on that date, this year will be the 21st year” Rachel

“Every Christmas Eve I cook a giant ham hock and eat lots of it with homemade chips and egg...Then BOOM Christmas has arrived hahaha x I know... I need to get out more” Kelly Bond

"Since my boys were born I’ve picked one Christmas tree decoration for them (and we put their initials and the year on the bottom), they now carry this on and pick their own and one for us” Nicki Windle

Page 26 www.s40local.co.uk

“My Mum and I always make Christmas cakes at the end of October. The smell of the rich cake cooking and the sense of anticipation for the result is overwhelming. Cooking with my Mum is a rarity and this makes baking Christmas cakes with her all the more special. We go to the Pantomime at the Pomegranate Theatre every year. This family tradition never grows old and enjoying the hilarity with three generations of my family is a special occasion. On the Evening of Christmas Day our whole family collect at one of our houses, we enjoy food and games and share nostalgic stories.” Ben Turner

"Buying presents and cards and trying to keep them secret until Christmas Day. Christmas decorations in the town centre. Lighting up the Old Road Christmas Tree and singing carols around it to The Ashover Brass Band. Packing shoeboxes for the Shoebox Appeal for children in troubled areas of the world. Watching children’s faces glow as the Christingle candles shine in the darkness at church. The Crooked Spire’s Christmas Tree Festival. Putting up the decorations at home, wrapping presents and of course our own Christmas Tree. Waiting for the Christmas edition of Radio Times and passing an opinion on its artwork cover – oh – and the programmes ! The Christmas services celebrating Christ’s birth. The opening of presents. Finally, Christmas Dinner, ‘The Queen’ and family games in the evening." Chris Townsend (The Gospel Mission Church)

“We go to my parents' every Christmas Eve and each year we pretend to be carol singers at the front door before they let us in. This tradition started with my grandparents and we used to do it at their house when I was a child. When we open our Christmas presents we do it one at a time in age order, takes forever but makes it more exciting to see what everyone has got. No telly Christmas Eve or Christmas day, we play games instead of charades, Pictionary and anything else the kids get that Christmas” Katie Spelman

"In the run up to Christmas, it’s getting the S40 tree ready for the Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas’, the Somersall park lantern parade and going to the Panto with a group of friends on the Sunday before Christmas and pizza afterwards. On Christmas Eve, going to Holymoorside and joining in the Christmas Carols with the brass band. Christmas Day and Boxing day are big family days, with a brisk walk, often to see the decorated tree in Somersall park, if the weather's good and lots of games. One thing I will mention is the Turkey road trip - we cook it in our oven then carefully drive it across the road to my mother-in-law’s - her oven's usually too full to accommodate the Turkey!" Paul Chapman

Q. Is Chesterfield a University Town? A. It is now! We take a tour of University of Derby's new Campus as St Helena's welcomes learners once again. Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: University of Derby

I

n Autumn this year St Helena’s, the old Chesterfield Girls High School, that has stood empty for 25 years, reopened its doors as an educational establishment putting Chesterfield on the map as a University Town!

The Chesterfield Campus of the University of Derby breathes new life into this Grade II listed building and the investment has not just saved a stunning building but redeveloped it into a light airy environment with state of the art university facilities.

Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk

Having two young children myself and faced with putting them through an education system that costs thousands we are keen to explore all options that will deliver them both a secure future and one that doesn’t leave them with a financial noose around their necks eg: owing £50k (average) to the education system. Invited to take part in a guided tour as part of a Destination Chesterfield event, we tagged along to see what the new facilities offer. Once the formal speeches were over we took a walk around the building. We were amazed

There are various funding streams available to businesses which the University will help coordinate. One such stream is Enscite, which enables local transport manufacturing based SMEs to access a series of business support initiatives ranging from a minimum of 12 hours workshops to several days’ support from the University to assist with projects within businesses. The team are keen to find out what projects local businesses are doing and how they can help. to find ourselves in a fully fitted out mock NHS hospital ward, complete with video technology to review students work and some slightly off putting, ill looking mannequins on which student's can practice their nursing skills. A high specification computer lab, Innovation Centre offering workshop facilities in design prototyping and materials analysis and testing, specialising in: • • • •

Advanced manufacturing Medical engineering New product and process development Control, instrumentation, smart and embedded devices • Energy and the environment Through a business partnership approach local manufacturing businesses can also gain access to the facilities. Courses on offer are shown below and they are offered as classroom based learning, online learning, part time and internships.

Courses • Degree level Health and Social care courses, including BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) and BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health), BA (Hons) Health and Social Care, BSc (Hons) Counselling and Psychotherapy and BSc (Hons) Child and Family Health and Wellbeing. • Continuing Professional Development courses for healthcare professionals, including Return to Practice (Nursing). • BEng (Hons) Professional Engineering. • Foundation Degree in Information Technology. • HND Business and Management

Business Support A few days later I was back again to see how the University is working to engage with businesses to support Chesterfield’s manufacturing industry using the latest technologies available. Alongside the learning facilities on site there are also seven 'Incubation Units', which are spaces available to help new businesses grow, based in the University building. A Business Development manager will be on site from January to help engage local business, so if you are interested in degree level support for your business or an incubation unit they are your first port of call. In the meantime please contact Andy Dowling at the Derby campus on 01332 597905.

" As a former pupil at St Helena, I was very excited to be invited to see my old school and what it now offers as part of the University of Derby. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the construction work and the sensitivity of regenerating the old elegant building to its former glory." Cathy Smith Jones & Co Independent Advice Chesterfield Ivan Fomin from Chesterfield based MSE Hiller can vouch for the support the University offer. “At MSE Hiller we design and build centrifuges and we’ve really benefited from having academic support over the last two years. Funded by the University the student has completed research which has improved our product, giving us a competitive edge as a result of this work. The student has since accepted a full time role with us and we’re working with the University in other areas going forward” says Ivan. We’ll bring you more on this at S40 Local. Dr Patrick Barber, acting Deputy Head of Department for Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, explained “the University works with businesses small and large, we have been working with Rolls-Royce, McLaren, JCB, Toyota, Lotus, Cosworth and Dyson to name a few. The work based learning programmes that we will run out of Chesterfield will be a blend of online and on-campus delivery, including Professional Engineering (Mechanical) which will ensure Chartership status for graduates as well as the FdSc Information Technology and we’re looking forward to forming partnerships with local manufacturing businesses in Chesterfield.” I'll keep you up to speed with developments at the Campus and for now I'm very excited to see university facilities and education in our town. It has real potential to inspire our young people, bring new investment, economic benefits and a new influx of university students to live and study in Chesterfield. Enjoy The Festive Period... Without Piling On The Pounds

Phillip Goulding of S40 Personal Training shares a festive five of his tips to lessen the impact of Festive Gluttony. The festive period should be a special time of year when you can let loose, relax from the stresses of work and enjoy a few drinks and good food with family and friends. However, all too often, for those who struggle with their weight it can be a stressful time riddled with tough choices and guilt. What if I told you it doesn't need to be like that? You can still have some of the indulgences, go wild at the Christmas party and stack up your Christmas dinner. Below I've outlined a few simple methods to help keep your calorie intake under control whilst still getting into the festive spirit. You probably won't lose weight but you should be able to keep the increase to a reasonable 1 to 2lbs rather than the half a stone or more that people often put on over December!

Carbs for alcohol.

Controversial I know. A personal trainer advocating drinking alcohol! It is truly shocking that I am just as partial to a few drinks as most other people. So lets get to it. How do I drink without the weight gain? Well, control your calorie intake on days when you know there will be drinks. Replacing your starchy carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, rice and potato with leafy or cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and cauliflower will leave you satisfied and full with less calories per meal. These extra calories can then be drunk later.

Smarter choices.

Ok, so you may now be thinking that I'm a borderline alcoholic or simply irresponsible giving you two tips on how to drink more but I know how much alcohol can impact weight gain and how big a role it plays in the typical British household over the festive period. So make smarter drink choices. A typical large glass of wine or pint of strong lager contains around 220kcal. Compare that to a 60kcal spirit and low calorie mixer such as a vodka and diet coke or gin and slimline tonic and you could save yourself hundreds if not thousands of calories over the entire Christmas period.

Skip a meal.

This a great way of reducing your calorie intake if you know that you have something planned that will involve eating more than you usually would.

The easiest way to do this tends to be by missing out breakfast and simply drinking water, tea or coffee to keep you going until lunchtime. It will take some willpower and you may feel hungry but keep your eyes on the end goal. By missing out on a meal you will save yourself a decent number of calories which can then be used later in the day to enjoy your meal out guilt free.

Dance, dance, dance.

If you want to stay trim over the Christmas and into the New Year what better way to do it than by hitting the dance floor. Imagine your typical party with finger buffet and drinks, not only will you have a fantastic time partying the night away but you'll be burning calories whilst not nibbling. Staying active is so important for minimising weight gain and dancing is just one suggestion. Going for a long walk with your family or friends on Boxing Day is a fantastic way of burning some of the excess from your Christmas dinner.

Relax.

Stress can play a big part in weight gain so taking some time over Christmas to relax and enjoy yourself may be the best thing you can do. Get some well-earned R&R after a long hard year. Recharge your batteries, have an extra hour in bed, take a bubble bath. Many things that you might not find time to do when you're at work can be beneficial to your mind and body.

Christmas

Santa's Sleigh The Power of 'The Local' We've talked elsewhere about your Christmas Traditions, but how many of us remember Santa in his sleigh coming to the streets in the run up to Christmas usually pulled by a local charity? The locals down at The Britannia Inn had this conversation a few weeks ago and decided they'd like to bring it back! So wood was sourced, suitable vehicles found courtesy of The Van Yard, Chesterfield and as I type the guys are in conversation with Santa about exactly how the sleigh should be built. Look out for Santa, he'll be in Ashgate on the 19th December, Somersall on the 20th, Walton on the 21st and Brampton on the 22nd together with his team collecting funds for Ashgate Hosipce. On the final night he might even be giving away a gift of two. Look out for him and please support a great local cause with a small donation if you are able.

Article Advertorial

My son came back from his first session at Kip and told me he had played on the computer for the whole session! Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath)

I

was not best pleased and he could see that! My wife reassured me that she had seen his work and that there had been “purpose in his play”! Still unconvinced and with him begging to go the next week, I went along to see for myself what was going on. After all I was paying for it!! Jo was very patient with me and explained that after a detailed assessment which is free of charge and with no obligation, they can identify where your child is now and where their academic gaps are plus which learning style they prefer. This information is used to develop an individual learning plan. Each week every student receives an individual lesson plan which is tailored to meet their academic needs and is designed to work with their own learning style. So if a child works best lying on the floor and using Jo’s laptop, that’s fine! She showed me how each lesson plan has specific learning targets (based on need and the National Curriculum) and aims to help build confidence and self-esteem. This is every bit as important to them as filling in those gaps. I was impressed so far! Every student has their own computer to use to access their lesson plan and computer based activities. Every session contains a selection of both computer and paper based work. All the activities are based on the National Curriculum and use the latest IT. This allows learners to have some control over the order in which they do things and allows them to take a break when they

need to, ensuring they maintain a good level of concentration and motivation throughout. They can also see clearly how well they are doing. I thought this level of resources was very impressive and the children I saw were very happy and relaxed. She told me that all the software has been designed exclusively for Kip McGrath which allows them to maintain a high standard, yet allow tutors and learners the flexibility to adapt plans to meet individual needs. My son really did ‘play’ on a computer the week I was there, but he also learnt a massive amount and could tell me what he had achieved and his improvement on scores from the previous week. In addition his tutor came out after the session and gave me a run down on what he had done, why it was part of what he needed and how he had progressed. I am eagerly awaiting the next assessment point so we can quantify his improvement. To say I was overwhelmed with what I saw is an understatement! These tutors really know their stuff and each child can’t help but improve under such a mix of 1-2-1 tuition and independent learning time. I work in business and this is massively successful customer service …Kip delivers, can prove it and quantify it as well. I encourage you to go along and see the fantastic Kip system and let your child benefit too. Ryan's Dad. Call Jo on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611.

Help your child go far with Kip McGrath Our qualified teachers create individual tutoring programmes for your child, using proven Kip McGrath methods.

Washington Whirligig The Rose & Crown's House Jazz Band Words: Wil Robinson

S

ince May of this year Washington Whirligig have been resident at the Rose and Crown on the first Sunday of every month from 4 to 6:30pm. The band has attracted new audience members on a regular basis, with many people choosing to book to have a Sunday roast dinner while they listen to the band (booking is

Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk

essential!). Some of the audience travel from as far afield as Lincoln, Newark and Leicester. Washington Whirligig play at jazz clubs and private functions across the country, bringing new fans to Chesterfield. Washington Whirligig was formed in 2012 by reed playing leader David Hepworth. For many years David had run the respected Silverleaf Jazz Band based in Barnsley, but for some time he had been working on the idea of forming a younger band to create a new, vibrant and energetic sound.

'The band were voted Band of The Year 2015/16 at the respected Rochdale Jazz Club.' David Hepworth - Following a lengthy period as lead Alto Saxophone with the Dearne Big Band, David took up the clarinet seat with the Sheffield based Silver Leaf Jazz Band. He soon became the leader and moved the band to the Strafford Arms at Stainborough where the band enjoyed a very successful weekly residency spanning over 20 years. Wil Robinson - After a career as a military musician, Wil turned full-time professional. He has worked with many well known musicians such as Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, George Melly and Eric Clapton. As a performer he was the resident trumpet player with the longestablished Jazz Preservation Society Band in Sheffield, and ran his own successful trad jazz outfit The Southside Jazz Band until they folded in April this year. Wil has also been fortunate enough to receive personal advice and encouragement from both Humphrey Lyttleton and Pat Halcox - two giants of jazz.

of styles with him ensuring that the rhythm section is inventive and original. Liz Hepworth - Multi-instrumentalist Liz started her musical journey by taking up the clarinet at the age of 9. This classical training progressed alongside a developing interest in jazz, having been taken to local jazz bands as a teenager by her jazz loving father. Liz took up tenor saxophone and flute, playing initially in the Dearne Big Band, before following her husband David to join the Silver Leaf Jazz Band, playing tenor saxophone, clarinet and vocals. It was during this period that Liz had the pleasure of playing alongside Monty Sunshine, to the delight of her father Sid. More recently Liz has taken up several other instruments, as well as achieving a BA Honours Music Degree and has become a qualified music teacher. Andy Bramall - involved in jazz and swing music since 1979. Starting on clarinet and saxophone, he then moved onto guitar with the Dearne Big Band and joined the Silver Leaf Jazz Band in 1992. He has a wealth of performance experience, plays saxophone with the Dearne Big Band and sings with the four part harmony group the Octave Singers. The band were voted Band of The Year 2015/16 at the respected Rochdale Jazz Club. They play a couple of times a year at the Pomegranate Theatre as well as regularly appearing at all the local jazz clubs such as Sutton In Ashfield, Todwick, Doncaster, Risley, and the oldest jazz club in the country, Nottingham Rhythm Club. In May of this year they met with the Managing Director of Brampton Brewery, Chris Radford, who agreed a sponsorship arrangement and the band are now proud to carry the brewery logo on their travels around the country. If Jazz is your thing catch up with them over lunch at The Rose one Sunday.

Rob Cotterell - the youngest member of the band, Rob's youth belies a wealth of experience and years of playing at the top level. Starting out as a classically trained percussionist, Rob has worked professionally in the jazz world since his teens, and has always been in demand for his subtle and versatile style. Wherever he works, Rob brings this fusion Please mention S40 Local ¡ Page 47

Christingle ... WHAT'S THIS FOR? • The orange represents the world. • The red ribbon (or tape) symbolises the love and blood of Christ. • The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God’s creations. • The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness.

Christingle is a celebratory event that takes place in thousands of churches and schools across the country, raising funds that help the Children’s Society continue their work supporting young people. Christingle celebrations are named after the Christingles that are lit during the service.

Food

S40 Local's food blog from Louise & Laura.

W

e simply cannot tell you how much we love this time of year. The days are cold and the afternoons dark but you know the festive season is nearly upon you, and if you are anything like us you are filled with excitement. Here are two of our favourites for you to try.

We love getting in the kitchen and cooking up some really tasty festive food. It doesn’t even have to be complicated! We like to start early with things and one way to do this is to make some scrumptious homemade chutney.

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

6 red onions 1 red chilli (de-seeded) 1 bay leaf Olive oil 200g soft brown sugar 2 teaspoons of mustard seeds 150ml balsamic vinegar 150ml red wine vinegar

Method

• Chop the onions into thin slices and then half again. Finely chop the chilli. • Fry the onion, chilli and bay leaf in olive oil for about 20 minutes. • Add in the sugar and vinegars, mustard seeds and simmer for another 30 minutes. • Pour into the sterilised kilner jars and let them cool.

This recipe will fill 2 medium sized kilner jars. Store in a cool dark place for about a month before eating. The chutney can then be stored away and left until Christmas ready to open and have with some cheese and biscuits. They are also perfect to put in a Christmas hamper as a present!

N

ot a fan of the usual mince pie? Then how about trying something a little different this Christmas? It’s a cross between a mince pie and a Portuguese tart! They are truly delicious and incredibly quick and easy to make.

Happy Christmas from Gastronamis

Cinderella

Free Community Panto

“I’m producing a Pantomime” Faith Vargas announced to her colleagues as they sat chatting in the staff room. “They looked at me in complete surprise, after all I’m a nurse, so what business do I have putting on a show? Sure, it seems a bit crazy, but at Redeemer King where I go to Church, we feel passionate about blessing our local community. Faith is one of the team at Redeemer King Church in Newbold, putting on the Panto and wants to spread the news. “When I was younger I remember going to the pantomime every year with my family, it was always special, a chance for the whole family to have a fun filled evening out. But now it costs a small fortune to take the whole family out to a live show, so we wanted to put on an event the whole community can enjoy, without worrying about the cost. “The show is free, which makes it accessible to everyone, and on the night, we will take donations, should people wish to donate, for Ashgate Hospice. The pantomime is “Cinderella” and the whole show, from the cast, to the costume has been done by volunteers. “It’s been wonderful to see things come together and we have been very fortunate to have support from our local community, such as Loundsley Green Community Centre who have given us rehearsal space.

“I can’t wait to see Cinderella come to life this Christmas and I hope the Chesterfield community feel the same and join us for a good laugh.” Faith is the coordinator, she’s helped write the script together with Peter Lacey, she plays a small part and has put together costumes. Anna Martin, a student who's studying theatre design, has given her spare time to design and paint the set and the music has been put together by one of the few in the team who have some theatre experience, a mixture of live music and song plus backing tracks. The panto takes place on 17 December at Outwood Academy Newbold from 7 to 9:30pm. Please email info@ redeemerking.com to book as there are only 180 places available, and donations can be made to Ashgate Hospice. Redeemer King is a new church which started two years ago and meets every Sunday at 10:30am at the Outwood Academy Newbold. They came together when a few people had a vision to start a new church in town and today they have a congregation that has grown steadily to around 150 people.

rampton Mild from Brampton Brewery has been named the best beer in the Midlands by judges at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards last night, hosted by the Birmingham CAMRA Beer festival. The awards, run by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), are unique in that the majority of judges are brewers themselves – making them the ‘brewers’ choice awards’ in the industry. “I congratulate Brampton brewery on being judged the best beer in the Midlands in these closely fought independent beer awards. The quality of entries this year was extremely high and judges had a difficult job separating the overall winners from a competitive pack. These champions in this year’s awards should be hugely proud of their

achievement.” Guy Sheppard, SIBA Chairman. Chris Radford from Brampton brewery accepted the award at the competition, and had this to say on their win, “The fact this award is voted for by our peers, by brewers, makes it very special. We brew beer we love and don’t expect to walk away with prizes, but this one means a lot. It’s brewed with love and with passion.” Brampton Brewery brew their beers on Chatsworth Road in the Chatsworth Business Park and run The Rose & Crown and Tramway tavern Pubs. If you want to fill a stocking with a three pack of Brampton ales call into the Beer Cellar where the guys would love to see you. Huge congratulations from all the team at S40 Local on another award for the display cabinet.

Chatsworth Road Medical Centre News & The PPG The Patient Participation Group (PPG) and the Chatsworth Road Medical Centre have forwarded the following news. The medical centre has had to change its website domain name. In case you missed it the new address is now:

chatsworthroadmedicalcentre.nhs.uk Dementia Friends On the website there is a lot of publicity about Dementia Friends. The staff at the surgery are Dementia Friends and they also have a Dementia Friends Champion who can help patients understand Dementia a little better. Some members of the PPG have also become Dementia Friends. By understanding Dementia more we can support those affected to live well with Dementia. As a society we often have the worst possible ideas in our minds about the impact contracting Dementia will have but the aim of the Dementia Friends initiative is to stamp out the stigma attached. One in fourteen people suffer with Dementia and if we are all aware of how to make things easier for them, then patients can continue with their lives. Patients may take time to do things and get confused, but with some understanding and patience from all of us, we can avoid frustration and annoyance amongst everyone. To find out more visit:

dementiafriends.org.uk Would you like to help other patients and staff at the surgery by joining the PPG? They are a friendly and active group of patients, who run projects and surveys to help improve care and service in conjunction with doctors and staff, and aim to represent patients’ interests and needs. If you are interested (or just think you may be – no commitment!), please contact Ken Davis (chairman) kenneth.davis@btinternet. com or Nick James (secretary) njaj1@ hotmail.com For more info:

Thanks From Blanc Anne Marie from Blanc and Nicola Moore from Trendco, Nottingham, dropped me a line just to pass on their thanks to all those who attended their recent fundraiser charity event at the Proact Stadium. The event was a sell out and helped raise £2260 which goes toward The Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Centre which is an exciting new development that will mean that people with cancer in the North and North East Derbyshire areas will be able to receive vital treatment, care and support in a purpose-built centre.

Exclusive Designer Stockists Harrods & Giraffe Nursery Store

G

iraffe Nursery Store on Chatsworth Road is one of just three stores nationwide, one of the others being Harrods, to stock the exclusive Cybex Priam range by American designer Jeremy Scott, of car seats, baby carriers and strollers. “To think that our little Chesterfield store can compete with the likes of Harrods is a great achievement, which can hopefully put Chesterfield on the map as a place to shop for all your baby needs” says Georgina Carlile. We were selected to host an event at the Chatsworth Road store to launch the new Cybex Priam Jeremy Scott Collection. “It was an honour to be selected to host the event, especially as we are currently the only stockist outside London. The Cybex Priam is a favourite with high profile celebrities such as Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett and Keira Knightly to mention a few and we’ve have recently had several celebrity visitors ourselves including a sports personality, soap star and premier league footballers” adds Georgina. "People love the high-end pushchairs and it’s bringing them from far and wide to

Page 62 www.s40local.co.uk

view and purchase their baby essentials under one roof. This make us serious competition for the national retailers." Giraffe Nursery Store was the first business venture for husband and wife team Georgina and Duncan Carlile. Whilst visiting Giraffe as customers when their first child came along five years ago, they became interested in the business and ended up with a lot more than they budgeted for, taking the decision to buy the business. “Being parents to three young children we realised what a mine-field it was choosing the right equipment for their new arrival, with safety being top of our list. With Giraffe we set out to give parents the best advice and enable them to make confident decisions when purchasing baby equipment” says Georgina. Giraffe were Chesterfield’s Retailer of the Year finalists for two consecutive years and are one of only four retailers in the UK to be asked to participate in a new trial for pushchair giants Bugaboo. They import high end stock from countries including the Netherlands, Germany and the USA as well as supporting British brands like iCandy and Silvercross. If you’re looking for stylish designer nursery equipment, please pop down to Giraffe where you can be assured of excellent advice and service.

Garden Tips 10 Garden Things

Garden Things for Autumn Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet? This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. 10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2017 Potato Day (January 28). There are 38 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late winter planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday.org. uk/ (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxed to chit the tubers in). Pre-ordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 6th December 2016. At the Inspire Community Garden on Sunday 4 December are holding a ‘Tree Dressing Day’ which is an annual opportunity to celebrate trees. It is a way to raise awareness of the value of trees, and provides an opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together and give thanks to the humble tree. It is open to all ages, you can either bring along your own decoration and we will help you hang it on our tree or make a decoration on the day to hang on our tree or take home and hang on your own tree.
