Chesterfield's Railway Stations ... a potted history.

id you know that there were once three railway stations in Chesterfield?

As well as the Midland station, which we still have, there was the Central Station, just a couple of hundred yards from the Midland; and there was the Market Place Station, just west of the Portland Hotel.

The first station was the Midland, completed in 1840 for the North Midland Railway. The NMR had George Stephenson himself as Chief Engineer. Stephenson, having been involved in the very first steam railways – everyone's heard of the 'Rocket' and the Stockton and Darlington railway – was wanted as engineer and surveyor by just about every railway company in Britain: he knew what he was doing, and he would buckle down and do it.

For the North Midland, Stephenson walked every inch of the 72 mile route from Leeds to Derby, and he decided to take the line mostly along river valleys. Stephenson chose this route in order to minimise gradients, and to minimise the amount of tunnelling, earthmoving, and building. Even so, the North Midland took a lot of earthmoving and building.

It was one of the largest construction tasks of the day; 204 bridges and viaducts, 7 tunnels, plus endless cuttings and embankments.

All this construction took a lot of manpower: 8,600 labourers are recorded in 1839. These labourers were the famous 'railway navvies', workmen who moved from one railway project to another, like men of previous generations had worked to build canals.

Navvies came from all parts of the kingdom, with large contingents from Scotland and Ireland. Paid two or three times more than farm or factory labourers, they were famous for hard working and hard drinking. They weren’t always the nicest of people; disputes with them, or among themselves, often turned violent, and the railway got authority from the Home Secretary to hire its own police to keep order. But given the 'immense accumulation of lawless and violent men', this wasn't thought enough and the army sent a cavalry unit, the 10th Hussars, to Chesterfield to support the magistrates.

Despite the difficulties, the line was finished ahead of time. The first trip along the Chesterfield section took place on the 11th May 1840, with the directors on board, along with investors, dignitaries, and reporters. It took 1 hour 35 minutes to get from Sheffield to Chesterfield, and it needed the help of the second engine to get its carriages up gradients. The train ran out of steam inside the tunnel at Clay Cross. Not good: “Mr Stephenson”, says one report, “vociferated a complaint in his Northumbria accent”, and another locomotive was brought up to help.

But all ended well. The train reached Derby after a three hour trip, and the return was made without problems. Regular services started July 1840; seven trains each way every day. First class fare for the full journey: £1 10s; second class £1, third class 14s.

The Midland was the town's only station for over 50 years. Carrying passengers eventually turned out to be bigger business than anticipated. Entrepreneurs built hotels and refreshment rooms, and railway companies put on excursions to allow ordinary folks to see the sights. There were days-out at Matlock and Chatsworth (via Rowsley station), and specials to the cities to see things like the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Some of these excursion trains were huge – five or six engines, up to 90 carriages (90!) and carrying over 2,000 passengers; they were known as 'monster trains'.

Railways meant people could visit London; or go to the seaside. Even if you never travelled, cheap transport meant local shops could get in goods from just about anywhere in Britain; local firms could ship their products cheaply; and fish could make it into town still fresh: the first fish-and-chip shops could open. Life changing stuff!

Like today there was concern about high train fares, so the government passed laws requiring that some cheap tickets be made available for workers. This resulted in socalled 'Parliamentary' trains that were cheap, but left early and returned late. In Chesterfield

Article History these trains included the famous 'Paddy Mails': trains that left for the mines at Staveley every morning, before 6am, but which cost only 1 shilling for a return ticket that was valid every day for a fortnight. They were called 'Paddy' mails because the workers included Irishmen who had settled in Chesterfield after the potato famine.

The Midland Station has been rebuilt a couple of times since 1840. Fittingly, it now has a statue of George Stephenson outside. One building from the original station survives, just opposite the Chesterfield Hotel; you can see the crest of the North Midland Railway above its entrance.

The next station to open, in 1892, was the Chesterfield Central Station, close to where the Trebor factory used to be. This was built by the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. The MS&L was basically a line to carry coal, but the MS&L's chairman, Edward Watkin, hatched a plan to create a giant conglomerate of railway companies reaching London and beyond; even to Paris via a channel tunnel to be dug by his 'Submarine Continental Railway Co.'. Building railways in Derbyshire, including to Chesterfield, was just a piece of that jigsaw. Sadly his company never reached Paris, but Chesterfield folk could use its trains to go to Cleethorpes.

Nearly as good. The MS&L was renamed 'Great Central Railway' in 1907.

Central Station never got the traffic that it expected, running at a fraction of the volume of the Midland. Passenger services stopped in 1963, with the final train being a return to Marylebone pulled by The Flying Scotsman.

But goods traffic went on till 1967. The buildings were pulled down in 1973, but you

can still see the entrance of the tunnel that led to the station at the bottom of Hollis Lane.

The last station to be built was the Market Place Station. This was constructed in 1897 by the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway. It was right next to the Portland Hotel; if you cross the main road next to the beer garden, you are going through the old station entrance.

The LD&EC’s idea was to carry coal from mines in the Pennines to docks on both coasts: Warrington, and Sutton-on-Sea. But the railway's plans hit trouble and it didn’t reach the East Coast, though it did get to Lincoln. It never reached Lancashire at all. It was taken over by the Great Central in 1907.

If the railway had kept to its plans it would have headed west to Buxton, crossing Monsal Dale over a 275ft high viaduct. This would have been a truly amazing sight; for comparison the viaduct you can see today at Monsal Head, built by the Midland Railway, is only 40ft high. But they didn’t have the money.

The problem that killed the line was the Bolsover tunnel. From the start there was flooding, with 200,000 gallons per day being pumped out at one time: enough to supply all of Bolsover! There was also subsidence. The tunnel was reduced to single line working, and some drivers refused to go in it. The traffic didn’t justify the cost of a fix, so in 1951 the station closed.

That leaves Chesterfield with just one station – but from it you can get direct trains to Scotland, to Cornwall, or to London. And with a single change of train, go all the way to Paris - or even Cleethorpes.

H

opefully you will all by now be aware of FOSP – a group of local volunteers working to care for and improve the facilities at Somersall Park. Here we share a round-up of our activities in 2016, and take a look at what 2017 has in store!

2016 was a busy year for us here at FOSP HQ! We ran two very well attended events – The Summer Stay and Play Sporting Event in August, and The Lantern Parade in December.

The feedback on both was great and there was a real sense of fun and community spirit.

Both events seem to grow each year, and we will be looking to secure enough funding and volunteer help to continue to run these annually. In particular, The Britannia Inn’s help with providing the refreshments at the parade seemed to lift the event to the next level! We are already planning for 2017!

This was also the second year of our Himalayan Balsam Bashing event – we couldn’t believe the reduction in re-growth along the banks of the river! Himalayan Balsam is an invasive non-native species that erodes the river bank and suffocates the native flora. We will be out there bashing again come the Summer to make sure our foe is fully defeated! If you would like to help – let us know!

Speaking of Flora - we had two more bulb plants in the park. We had help from the Westfield School Eco Committee in planting more Daffodils near the Brincliffe Close Entrance, and we ran a morning event planting Bluebells and Anemones by the footbridge.

We had lots of volunteers come along for this – thankyou all! Can’t wait to see the displays in the Spring.

Funding efforts were a roller coaster…

Unfortunately, our latest bid for the Play Area funding was again unsuccessful. This was a huge disappointment given the amount of

work that had gone into it. We are down but not out though and already preparing our next bid. We need your help with this one – so if you would like to see our outdated and somewhat dangerous play area replaced please email a letter of support to us at friendsofsomersallpark@gmail.com. Please attach your letter as a word document if possible and include your name and address.

So far we have received about 40 – but with so much community support and over 900 members on the facebook group we hope for many more!

On the plus side – thanks to the votes of our community supporters, we did secure a grant of £10,000 from Tesco Bags of Help. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in their local store. The money will be added to our fund, but one of the rules is that there is a strict time limit on when this has to be spent by. We need around £80,000 for the new Play Area so there is still some way to go and we need to act fast! If unable to secure the full amount in time then we may have to create the new Play Area in stages. It’s a case of use it or lose it!

2017 will be the year of the litter pick – we hear so much passion about this subject on the facebook group and so we hope that our monthly litter pick events will be much better attended this year. Please watch the facebook page for updates and remember: it only usually takes an hour or so and is surprisingly satisfying. Plus we get to have a natter too!

Chesterfield Photographic Society Exhibition - Stunning images will be on display at the Chesterfield Museum Art Gallery (8 April to 3 June) Words: Andrew Evans Pictures: Chesterfield Photographic Society

T

he exhibition will be open between 10am and 4pm, Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat. There will be a launch from 1 to 3pm until on Sat 8 April, all are welcome to drop in and have a tea or coffee and a chat.

The Photography Society is keen to talk to anyone interested in photography at whatever age or level from beginner to professional; all you need is a love of photography and a keen interest in taking great pictures! There is plenty of opportunity to develop skills and knowledge, enjoy the excellent support and learn from others.

Chesterfield Photographic society is based at the lecture theatre in the main Library on Beetwell Street, meetings take place on Thursday evenings between 7 and 9:30pm between September and April. During the summer there are organised trips to locations and events with exciting photographic opportunities.

The society has a growing reputation for attracting some top class presenters covering

all types of photography these include: landscapes, stunning wildlife, sports, macro (close up detail), studio, travel and the range of software to enhance the original photo such as Photoshop and Lightroom. As well as presentations the society provides practical workshops and visits to professional studios and for those who are interested runs internal and inter-club competitions and enters external salons and exhibitions. The emphasis is on enjoyment and support to individuals whatever your age, and whatever photographic interest.

We have members aged from 15 to well quite old!

The society also works closely with Derbyshire County Council to maintain a photographic record of the changes taking place across the borough. It has gathered a large repository of historical photographs going back to some of the very earliest photographs and some of these will be on display during the exhibition – come and see if you can recognise the 'then and now' locations!

The exhibition takes place in two parts so all members have the opportunity to display their best work. So a changeover will take place and a completely new set of images will be on display from 6 May. Society members will be on hand every Saturday and will hold a specific drop in session on Saturday 3 June where anyone interested in joining can join a presentation, learn more about what the society can offer and be given individual advice with any photography questions.

Almost all images will be available for sale during the period of the exhibition.

F

orest Schools is a popular initiative that uses the natural environment to build independence and selfesteem. Children get muddy, make woodland crafts, build dens, explore mini-beast hotels, develop frog lodges, use tools and learn how to be safe around an open fire. It's all about being outdoors and being free to explore.

It’s an approach to learning that’s becoming increasingly popular, but for students at Ashgate Croft this is going to need a little bit more planning.

The school takes children with a range of special needs, from reception age through to 19. Marie Old, Acting Assistant Head, explains “We have students with a wide range of needs. The majority of pupils have severe learning difficulties and would have difficulty coping in a mainstream school. Some of our pupils have profound and multiple learning difficulties, with an increasing number on the autism spectrum, many of whom are taught in specialist classes.

“We are one of the largest special needs schools in Derbyshire, presently we have 139 children in school. Our students are brought to us on buses and although some are local, some travel in from the edges of Derbyshire.

You may well have seen the buses lining up each day at 3pm waiting to collect the children and return them home after their day with us”.

Although Ashgate Croft follows the national curriculum, there is a huge emphasis on personal skills and giving children the ability to live as independently as possible. “To be the best they can, is a phrase we use a lot at Ashgate, this is our aim with our students” explains Marie. “The skills we teach might include things like hanging a coat on a peg, eating dinner round the table.

Things we take for granted but which some of our students find extremely challenging.”

“We are keen for our students to be part of the community and will take them out to catch the bus, go into Morrison’s to shop, go to a café for a drink, things they need to learn so they can take steps to independence.”

And this is where the development of the Forest Schools site on Ashgate Road comes in. “Many of our students don’t get much access to forests or similar areas, either because of accessibility difficulties or behavioural issues. I often take my own kids ‘jumping in muddy puddles’.

This is something the pupils at Ashgate don’t necessarily get to do very often. And we’re trying to create a space where they can roam and enjoy being outdoors in a wild setting, while being safe.

“We are therefore starting a campaign called ‘Fund a Forest School’ to help pay for the development of this forest area.

“Our main cost is a fence to keep the area secure. We have students who are not aware of danger, so creating a large space for them to roam while keeping them safe, is really important. We then need to cover or disguise the fence so the area feels wild and woodlike. We then need a path that is suitable for our wheelchairs users to be pushed. We have specific dimensions and gradients that need to be met, all of which adds to the cost. There are many other bits and bobs but these are our main outlays. Our fundraising target for the whole campaign is £30,000. We’ve already raised some of this but need a help to get over the finish line.”

Over the next few months the school will be raising more funds by whatever means possible including fayres, performances and sponsored swims. Recently they used the Christmas Fayre to raise funds, they are actively progressing grant funding and Marie will be running the London marathon to help.

“We’re looking forward to the day when students can get a bit muddy. The benefits associated with this type of outdoor activity are huge, we really do see a difference in the children” enthuses Marie.

Ashgate Croft The Ashgate Croft site on Ashgate Road was originally Chesterfield Union Industrial School / Children’s Home back to 1880. Since then the site has had various buildings and uses, becoming Ashgate Croft School over 50 years ago.

Today the school houses ‘The Croft’ a building set up like a house, complete with lounge area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom etc. Marie explained “we use this space to teach the children skills for living in a family home, here they can prepare and cook food, fill the washing machine, dishwasher, change the bed etc”.

There’s also a swimming pool onsite, complete with hoists and apparatus to teach children to swim. “This pool is used by many people within the community for swimming lessons, and is used to teach the children at Ashgate

to swim. In my early days here I first saw trust between a student and myself develop, it was a fantastic sense of achievement. When we first started working together in the pool, I could sense the student’s fear of the water. It was something new to them – and very scary.

Over time, he became used to the water and is now progressing really well with his swimming – always with a big smile on his face. It’s a great achievement for him and one of the many reasons I come in each day.”

“At the school we teach a varied curriculum with a focus on developing life skills. Our mantra is ‘Building Skills for Life’ because that is just what we do; aiming for every one of our students to be the best they can possibly be.”

What amazes me, is how often I’m invited along to a place to write some editorial or prepare an advert and I step through the door and I think 'this place is fantastic, why is it not thriving'. More often than not, the answer is that, people don’t know about it.

ne such place is Donut Creative Arts Centre (DCAS), tucked away on Spring Bank Road, behind LIDL (not, as I assumed, by the donut roundabout). Pam Bond, DCAS manager, took me on a tour.

DCAS is primarily a youth arts facility equipped with the latest technologies, designed with creative arts in mind, but it also offers so much more…

It houses a digital multimedia facility and a recording studio, equipped with iMacs, Macbooks, Green Screen and Music Production equipment, mixing desk, as well as studio lighting, projection, digital cameras, a range of creative software and a full voiceover booth – all available for hire.

“For those into their music, Lawson’s base player, Ryan Fletcher, started out using the rehearsal room at DCAS” Pam tells me.

There are two indoor spaces, the green room and main hall which share a stage and can be separated by sliding screens; the green room designed with plectrum shaped acoustic screens is ideal for intimate events of up to 40 people, whilst the main hall holds up to 200 people, again, available for hire.

Outside there’s even an amphitheatre and the layout enables people to flow between the areas, they are all fully accessible to people with disabilities, available for hire.

The entire centre is available for private hire, by individuals or businesses and although they don’t have catering facilities on site (they do have a small kitchen area) you can bring in outside caterers and bars. It’s suited to so many uses; wedding receptions, children's parties, 21st birthdays, film clubs, group meetings etc.

They also offer a selection of birthday party packages; recording studio parties with use of the mixing equipment, photography booth and cutting your very own CD. “These packages are a great way for youngsters to have a great time, sing and party (bring your own food) and to take away their very own recording” says Pam. Pam said “I like to describe it as a Tardis” and she’s so right.

During school holidays DCAS run events, a recent half term ‘Point and Shoot Photography’ event proved really popular.

“We looked at YouTube videos to see what was trending and developed something similar in-house” explained Pam, “the students finished the videos in the media suite using the editing software.”

In May they are holding an exhibition to showcase the work of the young people involved in the arts sessions, around the theme of ‘Dimension’.

If you’ve never explored the facilities the Dimensions exhibition in May would be a great opportunity to take a look and become acquainted with this great facility.

So who do you think was the most successful in the race to succeed…

... the Tortoise or the Hare?

The story celebrates the slow plod of the Tortoise against the super-fast energy which runs out of the Hare, but actually they are both successful. If it had been a short sprint the Hare would have crossed the line first not the Tortoise. Here at Kip we have Tortoises and Hares and they are both successful but only if we get them into the correct ‘race’ for their thirst for knowledge.

Let me explain!

The Hares, (averaging 2 year’s improvement in 2 terms)

The Hares with specific gaps and problems can work on improving their understanding and building their confidence. This allows them to achieve their potential fast whilst raising their self-esteem.

For those Hares currently working towards their SATs in May, the next few months are going to be a hard slog and increasingly stressful. Kip can provide tailor-made support to children for their learning needs and keep parents in the loop so they are confident of the outcomes as well. The speed of their growth can make a significant difference in the shorter term before the SAT’s.

Many of these Hares stay with us for the first term at their new high school. This move can be a

challenge in a number of ways; their workload is increased and the much higher student numbers can be intimidating. An extra term at Kip allows us to provide them with transitional support into Year 7.

The Tortoises, (stay for longer than 3 terms)

Some of our Tortoises start their SATs preparation with us a little earlier, in Year 5. They tend to have more areas to work on and need a little more time to build on their confidence and learning skills.

When they go into Year 6 they already know that they have improved significantly because they will have been reassessed a number of times and their progress monitored. It is a huge thrill for us to see a child’s face light up when they’re told how many months or years they’ve improved since starting at Kip! By the time they approach the SATs exams, they feel confident and well prepared.

Some of these Tortoises require additional support with learning skills and strategies as well as specific academic targets. These longer term learners benefit from the nurturing atmosphere at Kip and appreciate the opportunity to learn at their own speed. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey!

The common ground between the Hares and the Tortoises

Some of our very first SATs students, both Hares and Tortoises are currently working with us on their GCSE syllabus.

Lucy in particular was very lacking in confidence with maths at the beginning of year 6. She’s now in year 9 and in the top set; another chance for Jo to shed happy tears beckons…

So whether your child needs to be a Hare or a Tortoise bring them along to Jo for a free assessment of where they actually are and where you would like them to be in a few months.

When did you last take a good look at your feet?

LPH Footcare introduce themselves.

“

You can tell a lot about a person from their feet?” says Louise.

I’m at LPH Footcare on Stand Road talking to new S40 Local advertisers, Louise and Paul.

“The way the foot works is absolutely brilliant” explains Louise, she’s just come back from a conference where they talked feet for three days and her enthusiasm is evident. “The way it reacts to body pressure, a way to identify diabetes, they’re a very important part of our body and it’s not until people experience problems that we realise just how important, they really are!”

Louise has a background in customer services and care, she was responsible for service levels and spent time working in care homes.

It was whilst working in the care home that she realised she wanted to specialise in podiatry.

Louise went back to University, Huddersfield in fact, known throughout the UK as THE place to study feet.

“The team of lecturers were so passionate about what they want to achieve” says Louise.

“I took on additional modules, acupuncture below the knee for instance. This helps podiatrists understand the operation of the foot and how it affects the whole body.”

On qualifying Louise set up her own business and spent time in the NHS, but she wanted to be in control of her own environment, “when you’re employed it’s a job and how you operate is controlled by other people. When you’re self-employed it’s very different, I felt I could provide a much greater level of care, control my time and decide how I approached my customers.”

In April 2015, almost two years ago, Louise P Hill (LPH) Podiatry opened its doors.

“The two years have flown by, we’ve had some great recommendations and google has proved very useful, take a look at our reviews they speak volumes.”

LPH are situated at number 1 Stand Road, a few steps from the junction with Sheffield Road and the modern treatment areas are easily accessible with car parking on site.

Today the business is running well, and with Louise working at a Sheffield Clinic and doing home visits for two days of the week they have recently brought in Lindsay to help with the workload. In April a third podiatrist will be joining the team. This will enable them to offer appointments six days a week, “we’re all HPC registered so you have the security of knowing that your feet are in good hands.”

“The three of us are all fully qualified and specialise in musculosketal, we look at the problems and work to identify the cause. We consider the foot, ankle and lower limb and the interactions with external influences like footwear to understand its effect on the lower limb's anatomy including muscles, tendons, ligaments and skeleton.”

“Reception duties are taken care of by Sue and Sue, one known as Aunty Sue, was a senior carer in social health, our second Sue was a pharmacy technician, and both are highly qualified to take your call and welcome you to LPH.

“The final piece in the LPH jigsaw is Paul Dunn, he takes care of our marketing. Being employed in service level delivery he ensures this is reflected throughout the business.”

ondering what to do this Mother’s day? If you’re anything like us it’s usually a lazy Sunday morning in our pyjamas and then a trip out somewhere. It might be something simple like a walk round Chatsworth with the dog or just some family fun at the park.

Whatever we do it’s always perfect and we normally end the day sat round the table enjoying some home cooked comfort food, just what you need after lots of fresh air.

You don’t want to come home and spend hours in the kitchen so why not try this easy peasy dish. It’s perfect, it’s simple, it’s tasty, and without a doubt it’s sure to impress Mum!

Chicken with seasonal vegetables Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

Olive oil Butter 2 large chicken breasts cut into 3 pieces 6 shallots cut in half 1 small bag of new potatoes cut in half 2 large carrots cut into strips Garlic 150g green beans 150g asparagus tips

2tbsp plain flour 1tbsp Dijon mustard 1/2 pint white wine 1/2 pint chicken stock 60ml double cream (use light if you want to be healthier!)

• Few splashes of lemon juice • Dried parsley and tarragon

Method

• Heat the oil and butter in a large wok.

• Add the chicken and fry until cooked. Remove and keep warm in the oven.

• Next fry the shallots, garlic, carrots and new potatoes. Add the flour and mustard and stir through the vegetables. Pour in the wine and stock. Add the chicken back into the pan, cover and simmer for about 10 mins.

• Add the beans and asparagus but don't stir. Cover and simmer for 5 mins.

• Add in the lemon juice, cream and herbs, stir through and cook for a further 5 mins. All ready to dish up!

• We find a great way to serve this dish is to transfer everything into a large Creuset dish (warmed through in the oven first) put it in the centre of the table and serve with some fresh brown crusty bread to mop up the sauce!

Lottie joins the team

Families and food at The Manor have always been important, after all they were voted 'Best Family Venue' twice in a row at the Chesterfield Food & Drink Awards.

New to the team is Lottie Warriner and today she and Brampton the Bear are keeping kids entertained.

Offering kids holiday clubs, Brampton the Bear birthday parties and the regular Thursday Mum's & Cub's Club, where Mums go along too! The Cubs Club gives the grown-ups chance to relax and unwind over coffee and cake or lunch.

Lottie comes from an entertainment background. "I started in Disney, Tokyo, where I worked alongside a large team of talented professionals to create magic on a larger scale" says Lottie.

"I discovered my passion for entertaining children when I was lucky enough to be given the chance to wear the famous red coat at Butlins in Bognor Regis.

id-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes; assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which could affect the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn’t directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year.

Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed.

Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint, too. It is the time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary too.

If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there’s a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long.

Seeds to sow indoors in March include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules.

Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have.

Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year - tying it up prevents this happening efficiently, and doesn’t look nice.

There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again.

The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them – there are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you’ll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas.

Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem un-necessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right sort makes a big difference.

We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like this say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two.
