Intro

Hi and weclome to the Easter edition and the eighth anniversary of S40 Local. It all started in April 2009 when the first edition was just 16 pages and featured just 20 advertisers. Today we average 70 plus pages and around 85 advertisers, many of whom have been with us since we started. I love a statistic, so a few minutes with a spreadsheet tells me we've • • • • •

Run 6,830 adverts; Laid out 5,548 pages; Printed 631,100 copies; Spent 242 days delivering them; Walked approx. 17,500 miles delivering - well the delivery guys have!

The same distance the International Space Station travels in an hour! That’s not bad for a publication that has no sales team and one that doesn’t make a single cold call to sell adverts! Thank you to everyone who has been in touch or involved and that includes proofreaders, designers, invoicing, articles, deliverers and advertisers.

If you would like to advertise, list a classified item, tell us about your local event, contribute in any way or simply want to get in touch please see below. Mobile: 07764 80 10 80 Email: paul@s40local.co.uk

S40 Local has been a massive change for me, moving from a full time role with a major IT company to having to drive myself to pull together an interesting read each edition. The flexibility it gives us is great, it does soak up a lot of time but the end result is well worth it. I hope we’ve become a valued asset within the community, sharing information we pick up, speaking to new businesses, keeping people informed of what’s happening locally both every week and one off events, helping people sell unwanted items, giving the brain a challenge with the crossword and sudoku and much more in each edition. It's great to get your feedback and to know that many of you read what we've put and businesses tell me S40 Local gets a mention. I can’t thank you enough for this - it's important advertisers know we’re helping and people are using S40 Local to find their numbers. We’re always keen to hear what people are up to, so please do get in touch to help us spread your news, we are limited to how much editorial we can run each month but we’ll always do our best. And if you're a business thinking of calling, please don’t wait - 07764 801080! Happy birthday to us. Paul. t: 07764 801080 e: paul@s40local.co.uk

Out & About

Why Don't You? Just switch off the iPad, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, TV (you get the picture) and go and do something less boring instead. Words & Pictures: Paul Chapman

A

s Easter approaches those with children start thinking about how to keep them entertained over the two weeks. As a family we're keen to make the most of the beautiful outdoor space we have around us and it's even better if it's free! OK so it might need a bit of fuel to get there, possibly some parking to pay for, a picnic or some cake and hot chocolate but that's about it.

So what's on our free-ish list? Our favourite place has to be Curbar Edge. There is a short walk that goes along the edge, drops down the front at the far end before it becomes Froggat, through the woods and back up the road from the cottage on the corner. Along the way there are plenty of natural play areas, rocks to climb on, views to take in and, if you check out Jolly's Catering Company on Facebook, you can make sure their van is set up in the car park for the end of the walk. If you can get two wheels in the car for everyone the Monsall Trail is a popular spot. Park at the old Bakewell Station, on the roadside for free if you're before you reach Blackwell at the end of the trail. The good news is that after drinks and cake it's slightly downhill most of the way back! Longshaw Estate - The National Trust and Cadbury Egg Hunt. OK, this isn't free but it's just ÂŁ3 per child. Get yourselves over to the Longshaw Estate on any date between 14 and 17 April (10:30am to 3:30pm) and enjoy an Easter Egg Hunt.

there early enough, unload the bikes and set off to Blackwell. This is a there and back route, the tunnels reopened in 2011 at a cost of almost ÂŁ4M and there are plans to extend the trail to form a large circular loop around the Peak Distruct. Along the 8.5 mile route (each way) the trail gently rises 180m and you pass through six tunnels totalling 2km in length with some stunning views, the Monsal Viaduct, Cressbrook Mill, Litton, Millers Dale Station and the Lime Kilns for instance, all on the trail-side Page 14 www.s40local.co.uk

Start from the Moorland Discovery Centre, pick up a map and follow the clues to point you in the right direction. Have fun finding painted eggs around the estate and finding out about wildlife in spring-time! A delicious treat will be waiting for you at the end. For any further detail please check out their web site at nationaltrust.org.uk/events. These are just three options but there are plenty more to explore. Whatever you get up to, enjoy the Easter break.

Carry On Camping Autoselect Cars open up VW Camper Hire from their Chesterfield base on Pottery Lane West. Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: VW UK

W

hat could be cooler than a chance to get away from it all?

The VW Camper is an iconic vehicle, the original splitty and bay windows, the hippy bus of the 60s, defining freedom and escape. I’ve loved them since I was knee high somewhere I have a carefully built Airfix type kit, lowered with wood panelled floor and bright red paint. However, my love has never transformed into ownership, my wife’s answer whenever I mention how great would it be to be able to park up and make a cuppa goes something like “just buy a flask!” Campers are not cheap, second hand values stay high especially the California and factory vehicles and I’m kind of unrelaxed with the idea of driving around with the kitchen sink every time you need to nip out to the shops. But if like me you love the idea of pulling up in a campsite, dropping down the rock and roll bed, cracking open a bottle of your favourite tipple and watching the sun set, then hiring a camper will open up this freedom without the cost of ownership. In April Autoselect will take delivery of a brandnew VW T6 California Ocean and a long weekend starts at 2pm on a Friday and ends at 10am on Monday. Living in Chesterfield we’re under 70 miles from the coast (as the crow flies) and we have the Peak District to play in so in a couple of hours or less you could be set up to enjoy the weekend. We have friends who think we're mad staying in the Peak District at the weekend but we need to remember that for millions it is a holiday destination and we have the luxury of being able to escape for a few days with less than an hour's driving - what could be better? For adventures further afield check out roughguides.com/article/best-road-trips-in-the-uk The VW California is brilliantly equipped to sleep four comfortably and with its small functional kitchen facilities you’ll be able to have that brew. Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk

The design utilises space perfectly, a press of a button has the elevating roof up, this sleeps two when needed and allows extra headroom whilst moving about the cab. With electric hook-up you can keep the phones charged (if you want to that is and wouldn’t rather leave them switched off for the weekend…), the fresh water tank holds 30 litres and the electric pump gives a constant flow, no pumping the floor button to fill the sink, remember that caravaners? The two-burner gas stove and small fridge complete the kitchen facilities, small and functional but enough to cook a small meal, make a brew and keep the drinks chilled. The two rear seats (complete with ISOFIX child seat mounts), fold down converting into a lower two-person bed so with the two above gives ample sleeping area for four, pull down the blackout blinds, perhaps put the kids in the roof and a good night’s sleep can be had by all. The front captain seats swivel round and with the table clipped to the door there’s room to sit and eat indoors, when the sun shines the awning can be rolled out and in the tailgate, there are two folding chairs so you can keep an eye on the kids as they get to grips with their inner Bear Grylls. I asked Rob Bartle from Autoselect why he’d decided to start the hire side of the business? “I drive a Caravelle and it's a great familiy vehicle, they're extremely comfortable and easy to drive. I've been so impressed that we've added a T6 California for people to hire. "For many it will simply give them the chance to have a fun filled road trip without the outlay and running costs associated with buying one. "And for those thinking of purchasing a Camper what better way to see if it works for you than to hire one and try it for yourself? "I can't wait for ours to arrive, I may well have to take it for a test so we can feedback to people just how great they are." If you fancy a few days of mobile adventure contact Rob or James on 01246 205529 or call down to see them at Autoselect at Pottery Lane West to take a look round one of the campers.

Brampton Barbers Life on Chatsworth Road. Words: Paul Chapman

C

arl Hague is reluctant to have his photo taken standing outside his business, but he’s celebrating, quietly proud of his achievements. Three years ago he took a risk and moved into 167 to 169 Chatsworth Road, and opened Brampton Barbers. Carl’s a likeable bloke, important when you offer a service that’s so personal, “I like to offer modern yet traditional barbering, I’ve been in the trade for 16 years and love what I do” he says. He was formerly at Grade 1 and saw the opportunity that Chatsworth Road offered, things were changing and they still are, the road is busy, his business is busy, he’s happy with the decision. “It’s a great place to be. There’s a real sense of community here, Brampton has some characters, people are friendly, open and there’s always some great banter to be had in the shop. Like any new business, the first year is hard work, but now we’re into year four and more confident of a long future here in the heart of Brampton” SallyAnn Wylds works alongside Carl and she supports this view “I think it’s a very welcoming place to work, we're a small team but we get on well, customers are always ready and willing to share the local gossip and it’s not all about where you’ve been on holiday!” says Sally. She has 12 years’ experience in various Barbershops and stylists around Chesterfield but has found her feet at Brampton Barbers. The barbershop has recently had a makeover, new décor, floor and creative use of pallets, “we need to move with the times, maintain that contemporary feel but also stay very true to the traditions that make a barbershop what it is. “Male barbering today is highly fashionable, it’s an essential part of the fashion industry, statement haircuts etc, but it’s more that just looking tidy and we are here to ensure people look their best whether they’re just out of a pushchair or comfortably retired” explains Carl.

Page 20 www.s40local.co.uk

As well as cuts, clippers, styling for both hair and beard Brampton Barbers offers an exclusive range of male grooming products from Dapper Dan, which was awarded best male grooming product in 2016. You can also support your local store by sporting their range of hoodies, sweats and t-shirts which they now sell at the shop and, of course, wear themselves “don’t forget to say they’re great for the gym” adds Carl. Whilst I was in chatting to Carl I could see that they get great support from local residents, 9am and people calling in. If you need a cut out of hours you can book an appointment with Carl between 8 and 9am Mon to Fri and 6 to 8pm Mon, Wed and Fri and 7 to 8pm Thu, but these must be booked. If you’ve not tried Brampton Barbers yet perhaps it’s time you did. If you do… as always tell them S40 Local sent you!

A celebration of music and dance‌ A decade with the Brampton Community Band Words: Sheila Banks

Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk

B

rampton Community Band will celebrate it's 10th anniversary with a ceilidh at Loundsley Green on Saturday 6 May and you're invited!

You may already be familiar with the band and may well have attended one of the band's own ceilidhs or seen the band at a local event. The first Brampton Community Band get together was on April 26, 2007 at Old Hall Junior School, where the band continue to meet every Thursday evening (apart from relocating to The Peacock pub on Chatsworth Road every third Thursday) to play mainly English, Scottish and Irish folk dance music. The original idea came from Peter Gray, a local teacher at the school, who says, "I'd been playing folk music for many years and wondered if there were other musicians in the area who would like to get together. I wanted something with the 'feel' of a pub session, where all ages and abilities could get involved." The band gradually progressed from playing informally every Thursday to performing for local community events such as: Transition Chesterfield's produce swaps, the Chesterfield Canal Festival, the Chatsworth Road Festival, the Inkerman Buzz and the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign Christmas Party and further afield at the National Association of Crohn's and Colitis annual sponsored walk in York. The band organised its first Ceilidh in 2011, which led to further invitations to play for groups and at community events. The band welcomes invitations to play at community and private events. Building on Chesterfield's international links, in 2011, some band members travelled to Chesterfield's twin town of Troyes in France as guests of the local community and were duly impressed by the enthusiasm with which they were met as well as by the locals' dancing skills. The following year,

the band repaid the hospitality, welcoming visitors from Troyes and showing them the highlights of Chesterfield and the Peak District, as well as fitting in some music and a ceilidh at St Thomas'. A further trip abroad took place in August 2012 when the band visited the ancient city of Brescia, Italy, playing at the local castle and at Pezzaze's annual cheese festival. In 2012 the band recorded a CD; they still have some copies available so if you'd like one, just get in touch! Since its beginning in 2007, while the band has had membership ebbs and flows, the overall ethos of the band has remained: to be a forum where players of all abilities come together and play folk dance music. Several of the original members continue to play with the band, many new members have been welcomed, while, sadly, three have passed away. Other former members continue to develop musically including some who have formed their own bands, such as local band Jig for a Kiss. At this milestone in the band's story, we would welcome new members. For anyone interested in joining the band, come along on a Thursday evening to see what we are all about; the main requirement is to bring your own instrument(s) and enjoy the music! See our website for more details, including samples of the music we play and practice dates. If you're interested but aren't quite sure if it's for you, please contact the band for more information on bcband@hotmail. co.uk or on mobile no. 0781 187 2834, or come along to the 10th Anniversary Ceilidh on 6th May (7.30pm to 10.30pm) and speak to members of the band. For ticket details for the 6th May ceilidh see the website: www.bramptoncommunityband.org.uk.

Lift a caddy jack or two Words: Trevor The Ink Picture: Chesterfield Library and www.picturethepast.org.uk

One of the first people to take an interest in the history and folkways of our district was the Reverend Samuel Pegge, Rector of Old Whittington from 1751 to 1796. We’ve quoted him a few times before, in connection with last year’s 750 year anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield.

I’m hoping some of these words come back – there’s many a person appearing on the News that would be well described as a “Clarty, sliving nim!”. We need to change what we shout at the telly…

The Reverend Pegge and his son, also called Samuel, wrote cart-loads of interesting material. One of these documents is a study of local dialect words, phrases, and sayings, and we thought we’d go through a few of them (opposite).

The second is quite a compliment, especially given Derbyshire’s typically northern fondness for plain speaking and understatement, and I’ve long thought that Peggy Dowker’s would be a grand name for a pub or a beer.

Checking with the Oxford English Dictionary - the full 13 volume edition - and dialect references, it seems that some of the words the Pegges thought were local were used over wider areas, not just Derbyshire or the north. And some words are very old. A bunch have, I think, faded out in the two centuries since young Pegge died (1800), but some are still to be heard.

The Pegges also recorded a couple of local sayings. Below are two about beer.

Peggy Dowker was a real person: the elder Pegge (1704-1796) remembered her (he describes her as an ‘ale-wife’) from his childhood, meaning she was probably active in the 1710’s. Three hundred years ago. A long time gone, but a name worth remembering if you like the odd pint. If so, the next time you go out on a jag, lift a caddy jack or two to her nitle memory!

Derby Ale

Chesterfield Ale

O mortal man, that lives by bread,

The best ale in the world is in England;

What is it makes thy nose so red? 'Tis Derby ale, so strong and stale, That keeps my nose from looking pale. The word ‘stale’ didn’t mean the ale was off, it meant it had been allowed to stand and was still and clear.

the best in England is in Derbyshire; the best in Derbyshire is at Chesterfield; and the best in Chesterfield is at Peggy Dowker's

Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk

At after

This simply means ‘afterwards’. As a phrase it actually seems easier to understand than ‘afterwards’, but it’s basically dead now.

Ax

Ask. A very ancient alternative to ‘ask’; at least 12 centuries old and counting. Chaucer used it regularly, and so did early English translations of the Bible (“Axe and it shal be geven you”). Long found in many dialects and regions, including Derbyshire, and still common.

Caddy

Cheerful.

Cherty

Sad.

Chunter

Mutter and complain. Definitely still in use.

Clarty

Dirty, sticky. Still hear this. It’s a great word, somehow sounds right for its meaning.

Crank

Brisk and merry. You hear cranky for broken or odd, but never used in this way.

Cratchety

Sickly or out of order. I wonder if the Cratchit family in Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ got their name from this word?

Crozzled

Used of coals when they stick together on a fire.

Dades

Leading strings - as used with toddlers and small children.

Ding

To beat or thump. Still in use.

Dither

To quiver with cold.

Dol

A hand, especially a child’s hand (“Gie us yer dol”).

Dree

Tedious; or (applied to a person) a hard bargainer.

Farantly

Handsome.

Firrups

To ‘play the deuce’ with - to wreck.

Grizzles

Light rain. Small kids are still described as grizzling when they cry.

Jack

A half pint of ale. The name ‘Jack’, along with ‘Jenny’ got used for many things.

Jag

Jolly company. A ‘jag’ also meant to take in as much ale as you could drink. A concept not unknown in the S40 district even nowadays!

Jert

Throw, as in to throw a stone.

Lowk

Whip with a horse whip.

Mox

A foolish and slatternly old woman.

Mun

Must. Still in use.

Neckabout

Neck cloth.

Nim

A thief.

Nitle

Skilful, ingenious.

Oxter

Armpit.

Pillow-beer

Pillow case.

Quirken

Choke.

Ragg’d

Covered with fruit; thickly laden.

Rats

Scraps.

Rawm

To reach or strive too high.

Sad

Bad. Very much in use, especially I think among younger folk.

Scout

To regard with contempt.

Skare

To clear out ashes by poking at a fire.

Sliving

Slow moving, sneaking. This is a lovely word. You know it’s not good from just the sound.

Starve

Also ‘starvation’: to feel the cold. Definitely still in use.

Tassel

A sorry indifferent thing or person, good for nothing.

Waffling

Bark. I guess it’s a version of ‘woof’ plus ling.

Wilk

Bark, especially of a small dog.

Yawm

To talk loudly or bawl. Please mention S40 Local · Page 29

Annabelle and Johnny both had very different experiences at Kip Here are their stories in their own words…

Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath

Hi my name is Annabelle and in September last year I was rubbish at Maths. I am a year 10 student and I really found Maths hard. I hated it. My dad said I had to do something about it so he brought me to Kip and Jo tested me. I was really rubbish at Maths! I couldn’t even do the year 5 assessment. I went home and cried and never wanted to go back to Kip or school again. I knew I was bad but 5 years bad!!! Awwgh! Jo got a whole load of stuff that I needed to do, like basic stuff and some special topics. Each week we did a bit together and I did a load by myself on the computer. Jo said it was ok to get things wrong because then I would learn by that more than always getting it right. Seemed weird to me, but she is the boss!! Took me until Christmas before I could do the year 5 stuff and I thought at this rate I’ll be really old before I catch myself up. I think I must have had a magic spell on me over Christmas, by mid-January I finished the year 6 work and the end of January I did a full year 7 assessment. I did 2 years better in Maths in just 5 months. I reckon by summer I will be caught up and next summer maybe even get my GCSE with a good grade! Even if it isn’t high enough Jo says I can come back and work on getting it higher with her. Now I know I am not rubbish at Maths I just look at it differently, it just takes me a bit more time but I can get there! Thanks Jo!! Johnny’s story dictated to Jo Hi, I am 19 years old and I got an apprenticeship for this next September. Problem is I am dyslexic, real badly, and any reading or writing is beyond me. Last November I couldn’t even write my name and address. I had a reader and a writer at school to do exams and work and stuff. Jo tested me and I could read like a 6 year old. That was hard but I want this job so I have to do so something. I had to start with the ABC and within a month I could read some words by myself and recognise some letter combinations like ‘sh’ and ‘br’ and the sound they make. It was like amazing but I could start to see words from the jumble of letters that had always been there and I got my first reading book at Christmas and I could read it by myself. Wow that felt amazing!! Jo said we should do another reading test in January and I have done a whole year better in just 2 and a half months. Since Christmas I have read 3 books by myself and I managed to fill in a form for my apprenticeship the other day. I think by the time I go to my apprenticeship job in September I will be able to do loads more as my reading and writing is coming on. It is never too late to get better. Thanks Jo!

St Peter & St Paul Old Brampton

Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: St Peter & St Paul

J

ust a mile beyond the borders of our S40 Local distribution area is Old Brampton, a quiet village bordering Linacre Reservoirs with a traditional yet quirky church dating back to 1100. The church bells ring out on Sundays to call us to worship. There are six bells, the oldest ones dating back to the 16th Century and the newest being donated in 1923 by the Derbyshire High Sheriff, who lived opposite Ashgate hospice in Ashgate house, but more about the bell ringers later... and about its clock that marks time in its own way. St Peter and St Paul was built by the Normans, future occupants added to and changed the design to suit the needs of the church and requirements of the day. We glimpsed a little of the church's history when we delved into the events of the 750th anniversary of the battle of Chesterfield (1265). It was St Peter and St Paul’s church that supplied the ‘men of Brampton’, who marched into Chesterfield to defend the walls they’d built at St Mary & All Saint’s church. Why? It was to do with the burial of their dead. During the middle ages the dead could not be buried in the grounds of St Peter and St Paul, so they needed space in the Chesterfield church yard, they had responsibility for the wall and any damage to that wall and as such became involved! Around 1300 a spire was added, taking inspiration from roman engineering techniques; arches were built over the corners of the four sided structure to support the spire – known as a ‘squinch’! In 1400 the height of the main church was increased, the old steep roof removed and new windows were added to increase light. Things remained pretty much as they were until 1820 when a major overhaul was needed, two of the main church pillars were removed to allow large galleries on each side to increase the capacity for a larger congregation. Page 36 www.s40local.co.uk

The parish boundary stretched from Cutthorpe, to Holymoorside, from the outskirts of the town centre (as it is today) to the moors above Wadshelf which was rural farming and moorland. Several years later the removed pillars were reinstalled… it emerged they were needed to keep the building safe! In 1832, St Thomas in New Brampton opened its doors and the congregation at St Peter and St Paul reduced, so many of the new seats became empty! Today the church and the schoolroom are the only community buildings in a wholly residential linear village. The church sits on the main route from town to Baslow, in the 1800s life would have been very different in the village to what it is today. I met Sue Hall, Rhoda Blackwell, Anne Farrow and Reverend Peter Green for a tour of the building: “Today the church is well supported, people feel comfortable here, it’s a place of quiet contemplation and the church serves all ages of the community” says Sue. “It’s a popular stop off for walkers and the door is open all day to welcome people for a look round. The church has an active congregation, supports social events in the village, Beer and cheese nights, a parish pub crawl (although they do have a driver booked), walk to Linacre with picnic. It also shares the school room next door with the wider community and the church is a very popular location for a traditional wedding; bells, organ, choir are all available and reception venues just a short drive away, like The Fox & Goose for instance”.

The Bell Ringers “Our ringers are aged nine to over 60, we have six in primary, three teenagers and a bunch of adults. You can probably hear us practicing on a Monday evening between 7 and 9pm,” explained Sue Hall. “It’s lively in the bell tower and we encourage progress by using badges.

“Listen out for the bells on the 8 April as we will be having a Striking Contest in the afternoon, from 3pm onwards. Bell ringing teams from across the Chesterfield area will be competing and socialising over tea and cake. “We ring to celebrate events such as the Queen’s birthday, sometimes with a 45-minute quarter peal” adds Sue. What’s clear is her passion for the bells and the church. Sue is really welcoming and if you’re interested in bell ringing call up and have a chat – they also have a hand-bell ringing group so there is something for anyone who wants to try something new or with an interest in campanology.

The Clock What would you do with three extra minutes in an hour? Imagine it, that’s 72 extra minutes every day – more than an hour! Many years ago when the clock face was repainted, the painter who did the work at St Peter and St Paul’s may have chosen to spend these extra minutes in the George and Dragon (the old pub now a private residence opposite the church). Local gossip has it that he was prone to a liquid lunch, which lead to the minute increments on the clock face between some of the five minute marks having a few too many and others too few! Take a look next time you pass, it’s clear once you know. I left the church thinking what fascinating places these buildings are. Places of worship that stand the test of time, full of history and stories to tell, servicing the community around them and encouraging a sense of belonging. They are always welcoming of new members so if you fancy a little quiet contemplation and reflection or at the other end of the scale a bit of quiet bell ringing (can you ring bells quietly?) go and pay St Peter and St Paul a visit. Food

Easter.

Easter is such a lovely time of year. The daffodils are out, the sun is starting to shine and the days are getting lighter. One of best things for me is gathering all the family together over the Easter weekend and rustling up something nice.

Left over lamb curry in a hurry

Easter Chocolate Nest

Ingredients

Ingredients for the sponge

A roast leg of lamb tends to be the most traditional feast for Easter Sunday and I know after I’ve cooked it I always have plenty of meat left over. I love thinking of new ways to use up leftovers so here is one of my favourite Easter recipes. • Left over lamb cut into chunks • 2tsp ground ginger • 1tsp chilli powder • 1tbsp curry powder • 1 onion diced • 1/2 tsp garlic • Vegetable oil

Method

• 1/2 bag of spinach • 1tsp mustard seeds • 1 red pepper cut into chunks • Tin of chopped tomatoes • Tin of reduced fat coconut milk

Put the diced onion, ginger, garlic, chilli and curry powder in a blender with some oil and a handful of spinach and blend until it makes a paste. In a wok heat up some oil and add the mustard seeds. Once you hear the seeds pop add the red pepper and fry for a few minutes. Add the curry paste you've blended up and stir. Add the tinned tomatoes and coconut milk and bring to the boil. Add in the lamb and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add in a few more handfuls of spinach and once it's wilted you're ready to dish up! Easy...

It’s the law that at some point over the Easter break chocolate must be consumed! Here’s a great cake recipe which is sure to go down well with the kids and it’s also a perfect table centrepiece sure to impress your guests. • 175g butter • 200g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, whites and yolks separated • 60ml milk

• 100g (70%) dark chocolate, melted and cooled • 200g plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Method Preheat the oven to 180 C. Lightly grease 2 cake tins. Mix together the butter and sugar until the mixture is smooth. Add the egg yolks and continue to beat until light and fluffy. Add the melted chocolate. Mix in flour and baking powder; beat for another minute until mixture is an even colour. In a separate bowl, whisk egg whites until stiff. Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate cake mixture until evenly mixed. Do this with a metal spoon or knife in a chopping and folding motion. Place the mixture in the tins. Bake for 30 minutes or until cooked. Put a skewer into the centre and if clean then it’s ready. Leave to cook on a wire rack. When cooked fill with chocolate buttercream. Coat with melted chocolate or chocolate buttercream and decorate as you fancy (to make it extra easy you could buy some buttercream already made up – I’d recommend Betty Crockers). To create a nest on top melt some dark cooking chocolate and added cornflakes, mix together until evenly coated. Allow to cool for couple of minutes and then place on top of the cake with some mini Easter eggs.

Enjoy our recipes of love and please post us some pictures to our gastronamis page on Facebook or instagram. We’d love to hear from you.

WHAT'S GOING ON THIS EASTER AT... AFTERCARE PROJECT The Aftercare project, delivered by Barnardos across Derbyshire and funded through Derbyshire County Council, provides preparation and support to young people aged 16-25 leaving the care system. For young people who might have little contact with birth family, and who may have experienced a lack of stability in their early lives with the emotional trauma that can accompany this, the transition to adulthood can be a challenge. Some are fortunate enough to receive continuing support and encouragement from their

previous foster carers, but this is not the case for all. Aftercare teams are based in Chesterfield and Heanor, covering the whole of Derbyshire. They provide support and an element of independence skills training to hundreds of young people. They also provide social opportunities and activities when possible and support young people with their education, training or employment. At St John’s Walton, we try to offer some additional nurture and care, indirectly, by providing “starter packs”. They contain items such as dry or long-life food stuffs, cleaning materials,

FAMILIES MATTER

Hi I’m Jo, mum of 3 children aged 13, 15 and 17. As a family we have recently been through hard times, with our eldest child having a lengthy spell of illness and disability caused by Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). This condition is typified by periods of stiff, painful joints and fatigue. For our daughter, she has had a very aggressive form of the disease which has meant over a year off school and long periods of limited mobility and reduced Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk

personal toiletries, washing powder, toilet roll etc, so that when a young person moves out to their own accommodation they can be given a box of items to help with the initial setting up of home. This, hopefully, will give a little comfort and ease to their lives, indicating to them that they are cared about by the wider community. We do not give cash as this would not be appropriate, but church members donate items for the starter packs. Items are then delivered to the Aftercare Project staff for distribution.

AFTERNOON TEA PARTY

Sat 20th May • 2-4.30pm St John's invite you to join us at our Afternoon Tea Party celebrating the 60th anniversary of Christian Aid. With Cream Teas, displays from local community groups, cards, cakes & activities for children.

ability to do the things teenagers normally do. She is now much better, thanks to amazing drugs the NHS funds and lots of skilled care from the Sheffield Children’s hospital. One of the big lessons we have learnt as a family is how important our church family is. We attend St John’s church in Walton. Our church family have looked after us in all sorts of ways; prayer, taking our daughter out, looking after our younger children, teaching our daughter when she was out of school, listening to us, crying with us and many more ways. One of the ways many churches seek to care for their church members is through attendance at a home group, a small group that meets regularly to support each other, pray for each other and learn more about what it means to be a Christian. We have felt the value of our home group through hard times and good times. We are launching a new homegroup at our house on Friday evenings. If you are interested in joining a church homegroup, contact your local church. For details about the St John's homegroups please contact the church office on 01246 566205.

LIASING FOR SAFETY It is the responsibility of all of us to provide a safe environment, especially for children/ young people and vulnerable adults. We take safeguarding seriously at St John’s and have two trained volunteer Parish Safeguarding Liaison (PSL) officers - one for children/young people and one for vulnerable adults. Their role is to work with the incumbent (vicar) to implement the diocesan guidelines on safeguarding, to contribute towards safer recruitment of staff and volunteers within the church as below: • Obtain DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks where appropriate. • Monitor church activities involving children/ young people and also vulnerable adults. • Ensure relevant training is available to all volunteers. • Listen to and act upon allegations or concerns regarding a child/young person or vulnerable adult in the parish. • Ensure anyone who is suffering, or who has survived abuse, is supported appropriately. • Liaise with the diocese and contribute to the effective management of anyone in the community who poses a risk. • Keep all records confidential and secure. PAC-MAN

Eats Up The Marathon Richard Cocker, Walton resident and S40 Local advertiser, will be running the London Marathon in April and shouldn’t be too hard to spot as PAC-MAN as he raises much needed funding for Fields in Trust, he dropped me a few words to explain why he’s doing it. “Did you know that there is no government requirement to provide public parks? Most people don’t realise this. "Every year much-loved parks are being lost all over the UK to development or neglect and there is no statutory protection at all for public green spaces so it’s left to organisations like Fields in Trust to ensure that they aren’t sold or built on. "We can all think of a special memory made in a park, whether it was picnicking with family as a child, climbing trees with friends, or even having a first kiss. Yet they are constantly under threat. "Many people, especially those without gardens, are dependent on their local park for outdoor relaxation or exercise, and it is here that many children get their first taste of sport. "Fields in Trust currently legally protect over 2,600 parks, playing fields, nature reserves and sports pitches across the UK, but there is still lots of work to be done. It is estimated that around 90% of public parks remain unprotected and could be vulnerable to being lost "I have two young boys and with obesity in children becoming an ever growing problem I want to help make sure they have lots of great places to play outside!! "The reason I chose PAC-MAC was that the little fella eats all the time. His entire existence is eating. Over here he eats a row of pellets (biscuits) over there he chomps down on some treats and then he washes it down with some tasty ghosts. How can he eat that much without getting pac-diabetes? "It's the running, the yellow guy moves. He might be eating every step he takes, but he needs to, running takes a lot of energy. "A great many of our kids are eating more high fat high sugar diets and then living a sedentary lifestyle. We need to make sure our kids have lots of places to run about, have fun and fight obesity." If you would like to support Richard in his attempt to raise £1750 for Fields in Trust visit his page below or give him a call on 0793 148 9801.

When did being a consumer become so complicated? Penk Insurance would like to remind people that they offer a more traditional way of buying insurance. We are constantly bombarded with messages to switch companies to get a better deal on everything from utilities to insurance, but many of us either don’t have the digital expertise, the time, the energy or the inclination to keep switching suppliers. If you feel like this and you’d rather speak to someone face to face, Penk Insurance could be what you’re looking for, on the insurance side at least. Penk Insurance offers insurance products from a number of trusted, leading companies, they’re located in a bright friendly office towards the bottom of Chatsworth Road and their doors are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm where their team will welcome you in, discuss your insurance needs and might even get you a coffee. And, if during the term of the insurance you need to make a claim you can again go in and see them first hand or give them a call, even speak to the person who set up your insurance in the first place and get things organised. What's great about this is when you discuss the claim they'll probably know the area which makes things so much easier. David and Jenny Penk own the business which started out as a taxi specialist filling a niche at the time. They have grown the business over the years to offer insurance services that cover business, taxi and minibus, motor, home, tradesman, commercial vehicle, breakdown, travel, motor fleet and landlords. They are local people with a real interest in supporting the community and helping develop the area and their committed insurance specialist team are here to help. So, if buying insurance is starting to feel like a trial, why not pop in, you’ll find them at 49 to 53 Chatsworth Road or give Penk a call and get some good old fashioned friendly service and insurance at a competitive price. Industrial Heritage Day Saturday 6 May

Brampton-based, NEDIAS organised their first “Industrial Heritage Day” 3 years ago at St Thomas’s Centre with great success and over 100 attendees. The theme was the local Brampton industrial history, particularly the two listed buildings, Walton Bump Mill and the Cannon Mill. It’s good to see that the Walton Mill has now secured a future, with redevelopment now approved by local Chesterfield BC Planning Office. Their next Heritage Day will be held on Saturday 6 May, at Cromford Mill. It is titled “Cromford Threads”, a play on words, and explores some intriguing aspects of Cromford and the Arkwrights. Whilst the story of the mill itself is well known to industrial historians, this conference will explore some of the lesser known connections to the site. Speakers include Prof. Stanley Chapman, Dr Lynn Willies, Peter South and Darrell Clark and they will tease out some of the interesting connections. The conference starts by placing Arkwright's Mills in the context of the World Heritage Site's buildings and power units. It moves on to look at early industrial espionage and the building of Germany's first water powered cotton mill - amazingly also named Cromford. The conference explores Arkwright's water power - a lead mining sough with connections to the great 17th century water engineer Vermuyden and also includes fascinating family history, the life and times of the later generations of the Arkwrights as they passed down through the generations. Garden Tips 10 Garden Things

April's Gardening Tips Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

B

y the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We've had a generally mild winter which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus.

1. If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes, they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, Easter being mid-April this year means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero. 2. Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts never sow into frozen soil. 3. If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house. 4. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. 5. If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year now is the time to save a space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops a really good start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month. 6. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around and above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. 7. As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout. 8. If you have fruit trees or shrubs, their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will, to some extent, provide their own micro-climate so will suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost), and can be left to take their chances. 9. Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons. 10. If it's mild there isn't a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important!
