Hi and welcome to the May edition of S40 Local. Thanks to everyone who's been in touch over the past few weeks with news, stories, things to sell, events to list and new adverts to run. It's all really appreciated and with your contributions enable each edition of S40 Local to drop through your letter boxes. As I write it's the May Bank Holiday and in true British style the rain is falling and we're pottering rather than getting out and about enjoying a day. Oh well, as we're in the UK we'll deal with it, adjust our plans and possibly pop out if the rain stops for a while. We're good at adapting and changing in the UK. I've recently been to a few meetings and presentations that highlight this. Being a Chesterfield Champion (the scheme run by Destination Chesterfield to promote our town) I'm invited to the annual Celebrate Chesterfield event at the Winding Wheel. The event focuses on what's happening in the area, new developments and projects and provides updates on their progress. I came away from this overloaded with info: The Waterside is making more progress, the Northern Gateway is set for delivery in 2018, Walton Works has secured planning, HS2 is bringing new opportunities for the Staveley corridor, new units built and businesses moving into Markham Vale. Updates on schemes like the University of Derby campus, Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Staveley Hall, Ashgate Hospice, the MacMillam Cancer unit at the Royal Hospital and the largest, and for me, the most exciting, the Peak Resort development at Dunston, bringing fantastic new holiday accommodation that will be a complete game changer for Chesterfield and the surrounding area. You can read all about the schemes in our updates on page 20. The Winding Wheel celebrates 30 years this year and is running special events and tours for a week in May, so please check out the advert and article and be sure to take a behind the scenes tour. Our next edition is June, by which point we'll be half way through the year and looking forward to the summer holidays. Tour De Chessy Saturday 10 June sees The 2017 Women’s Tour start and finish in Chesterfield town centre on day four of the five day UCI Women's World Tour. Words & Pictures: Paul Chapman

e catch up with the marketing wagon as it roles into town to make sure we put the date in our diaries to witness one of cycling’s premier UK events as Chesterfield hosts the riders for the second year running. The 2017 Women’s Tour is in its fourth year and attracts the top 17 teams from across the globe including names such as Marianne Vos and Lisa Brennauer, British heroes Lizzie Deignan and Dani King and rising stars Alice and Hannah Barnes. Starting in Daventry on Wednesday 7 June the route will cover four tough stages around the heart of England, day two (Thursday 8 June) starts and finishes in Stoke On Trent, day three (Friday 9 June) Atherstone to Royal Lemington Spa, day four (Saturday 10 June) starts and finishes in Chesterfield, following a 133km circuit of the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and Peak District and things are concluded on Sunday 11 June with the riders lapping a course in London, that includes Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Regent Street. Councillor Amanda Sargeant was keen to point out the financial impact the event has, “Chesterfield Borough Council is rightly proud that the tour this year not only finishes in town, like last year, but will also start from the town centre. “The financial impact of the tour on our town is significant, last year we estimated it brought in £2m with the town’s accommodation being fully booked up as people stay in the area to watch the race and enjoy what Chesterfield has to offer.” Early in March, Hannah Walker and Gaby Shaw, local riders from team WNT Pro Cycling, came to town on a beautiful sunny day with hardly a cloud in the sky as we gathered outside St Mary and All Saints to meet them and take the odd photo or two. Gaby from Leeds rides at Elite level, equally at home on road or track. She’s had some impressive results with top ten finishes in UK races and solid results in UCI World ranked stage races. Her career in cycling started at the age of 13 when she was talent spotted during cycling trials held at her school, apparently only attending to skip a maths lesson! Hannah, from Stockport, has been cycling for 8 years, racing throughout Britain in National level races, as well as International races in Europe such as Tour of Brittany. Since starting racing in 2008, Hannah has won four National Championship titles, once in the Madison with Hannah Barnes and three times National Derny Champion. Hannah got into cycling after an injury left her unable to compete in running events so turned to cycling as a way of keeping fit. The first taste of cycling was at the Manchester Velodrome at a taster session. She was hooked and never looked back. After getting a few photos in the sun I asked the riders a few questions about their thoughts on the race and getting girls into cycling. Do you think the success of Team GB has helped women's cycling? “The success of Team GB at the Olympics and World Championships really helps inspire everyone, cyclists, young children, people seeing the performances on the news it all helps. As a result people see events such as the Women’s Tour coming to their home town and they will hopefully come down to see what it's about” says Hannah. Do you relish the chance to ride against world tour teams? “We've both done it before but it's still quite daunting to be on the start line with the best riders in the world" says Gaby. "It will be our first World Tour event but we'll have raced at UCI events which include the same teams and riders, hopefully we'll get some chance to warm up and get used to the pace."

Queen Stage

The hardest, most demanding stage of a race; the stage that will have the biggest effect on the overall results. Named after the queen in Chess, which is the most powerful piece, and which typically can have the biggest effect on the game.

Sport Of the stages do you consider this stage the Queen Stage? "It's the hardest stage at 130km long and 2000m of climbing so definitely the Queen Stage" says Gaby.

"It's important to have your parents behind you, to keep taking you to the clubs, and encourage you to ride" adds Hannah.

Do you reccy the stages at all? "Once you get the route, as it's local you do get the chance to drive over" says Hannah. "It's really beneficial to know where you need to be with the front group, where the group might split, there's nothing better than having a bit of insider knowledge."

Is it a long ride? “The Chesterfield stage is the longest and hardest of the five-day tour with 2000m of climbing. It’s known as the Queen Stage and will probably see the overall winner emerge” says Gaby.

Many girls take up sport at a young age but drop out in their teenage years, what kept you hooked? "I always loved sport" says Hannah. "Running, athletics, cross country before I started cycling so I've always enjoyed the competitive part of it. I joined a youth cycling club where you ride with friends on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings."

Is it hard? “Yes, very” says both Hannah and Gaby in unison. Do you travel around the world cycling? “Yes, we get to visit some really nice places, mainly in Europe although our focus is always on training and racing” says Hannah.

Was there much parental backing? "There has to be from the start, it’s a tough sport to break into but there is support out there at local club level where you can race with girls and boys of your age and push through the ranks" answers Gaby. "If you enjoy it it's all part of it, hopefully they'll want to continue, through the enjoyment, the people they meet, the places you go and things spiral from there. Engaging in clubs at a young age means you’re riding with friends, it’s a huge benefit." Page 6 www.s40local.co.uk

he year 2017 marks 30 years since the birth of the Winding Wheel as the highly successful and popular multi-purpose venue we know today. Join us in celebration from Mon 15 – Fri 26 May, with a series of events including a specially commissioned exhibition, guided tours, films and concerts. Come along to our brand new, specially commissioned exhibition which traces the history and development of the Winding Wheel building, which was originally built as the Picture House cinema in 1923 and later became the Odeon in 1938. In the 1960s the Odeon was acquired by Rank Organisation, the Ballroom was painted red and became a nightclub. The building closed as a cinema in 1981. Apart from the nightclub in the Ballroom and café area, the building lay unused for 5 years, but in 1987, Chesterfield Borough Council purchased and completely refurbished the building, taking away the fixed seating and constructing a dance floor above the stalls whilst keeping the internal décor intact. The building reopened in 1987 as the Winding Wheel Exhibition, Entertainment and Conference Centre. In 2000 the Winding Wheel was made a Grade II Listed Building.

In a few short months Meringue will have been on Chatsworth Road for five years. We caught up with Sue for a few words about their new venture, on Saturday nights they turn up the ambiance and open doors as Meringue Restaurant. "We’ve been at Meringue for five years on 5 November" says Sue, "and we now feel an established part of the Chatsworth Road community and very welcome, happy to be so. people asked if we would open in the evening, but at first we just had to get up and running not sure how things were going to pan out. "The most influential change for us was when we found (or should we say 'she found us') Lydia, our Pastry Chef, 2 years ago. She completes the business, working alongside Neil in the kitchen so I can control out front, and with Lydia’s input, and that of Rose our daughter helping too, we finally feel we have a fantastic team and able to deliver on a different level what customers demand when dining in the evening. "Neil and I considered carefully what sort of evening we would enjoy when dining out when we get the chance?! "Meringue Restaurant is relaxed and indulgent. The food is not reinvented, deconstructed or “served four ways”. We like to

think that it's simply delicious, but a little French because that’s our background in London. "Plans are hopefully for us to open our doors every Saturday night, bookings led. "We just love our café but also feel we can give much more to all our locals providing them with that holiday feel escapism that we all deserve... and let's face it, need once in a while!" Celebrate Chesterfield Chesterfield's projects on the move ... Words: Paul Chapman

hesterfield has a lot going on. We’ve talked in the pages of S40 Local about numerous projects that have been striving for financial backers for several years but recently there have been some major gains and many of these schemes now have the necessary support to start the bulldozers rolling. I attended the, now annual, Celebrate Chesterfield event organised by Destination Chesterfield at the Winding Wheel in early April alongside 300 Chesterfield based businessmen and women waiting to hear what this means for our town. Chesterfield Waterside: Planning consent has been granted for the height and scale of the buildings for basin square (pictured opposite), 300 new jobs are expected to be delivered together with apartments, retail, car parking, office space and a hotel. Work should commence on site, alongside the A61, in 2018 and first occupancy is expected early 2019. The Northern Gateway: Redevelopment of the old Co-op department store into restaurants, hotel and fitness centre. Changes to street layout on Elder Way and Knifesmithgate, refurbishment of the Saltergate Car Park and a new enterprise centre on the Donut carpark. Funded by Sheffield City Region grants, Chesterfield Borough Council and a private developer

this scheme will happen across 2017/8 and bring with it 490 new jobs. Markham Vale: A new link road from the M1 opens up new capacity at the site. Great Bear Distribution will have almost 1M sq ft of capacity by the end of 2017 and Ferdinand Bilstien open 225,000 sq ft with more planned. In total 13 new warehousing units exist and presently 938 jobs have been created, with the potential for 2000 more! Walton Works: Plans approved in January (below) this year are for a mixed-use scheme including retail, a public house and residential development on the site and includes the Grade II listed Walton Mill and Mill Terrace. This plan has taken 14 years to see approval but Guy Robinson said “The unanimous backing of the planning committee and very positive attitude shown does give us confidence to push ahead with our plans.” See Facebook page for latest developments. HS2/Staveley Corridor: HS2 plans will hopefully see the high-speed train services stopping in Chesterfield and a new maintenance depot in Staveley bringing with them 200 new jobs. This will need skilled labour and they’ll need new housing for which Planning applications are being developed to bring brownfield areas back into use for new housing.

In addition to the major schemes above: • Chesterfield became a University town in 2016 as the University of Derby opened the doors at the former St Helena’s Girl School; • Grade II listed Staveley Hall was refurbished at a cost of £4.8m creating new business and events facilities; • Barrow Hill Roundhouse has benefitted from a £1.2m spend on renovations; • Developer Blue Deer (responsible for the 131 Chatsworth Road development) wants to hear people’s ideas for the former Fire Station on Sheffield Road; • The Harry Fisher building and renovation of Ashgate House benefitted by increasing the numbers of people Ashgate Hospice can support; • The £9m MacMillan Cancer Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital is due to open later in the year. Looking closely at the town centre it’s a generally healthy picture but it is recognised there are some problems that need addressing. Town centre Occupancy is still high at 92.7% and Chesterfield is number 26 in the list of ‘hot retail locations’ appearing much higher up the list than many major towns.

The town centre recently saw the loss of BHS and Burtons but department store TG Hughes is now open soon and the town centre still attracts new bars and restaurants, most recently Bottle & Thyme, The Junction and The Rectory. The problems with drug and alcohol abuse around the old court house are recognised and the council are working with the landlord to resolve these problems. Two other empty buildings are the Chesterfield Hotel, which is now sold and the Victoria Centre on Knifesmithgate both are privately owned and again the council are working with the owners to establish ways to realise the potential in these buildings. Chesterfield Borough Council have been consulting on a new local plan which identifies sites for 4000 new homes to be built between now and 2033 with consents already in for 3000 of them and keen interest in many of the sites, including the old Post Office in the Market Square. Employment statistics look good for town, in 2009 there were 46,000 jobs today that figure has swelled to 51,000 and youth unemployment is down to just 3%.

Chesterfield Peak Resort: One scheme I’ve not touched on yet is the Peak Resort. Rupert Carr from Birchall Properties (pictured below) took the stage to tell us about the plans for the new holiday destination that will be up and running for 2019. The £400m development will create a new kind of holiday destination, integrating leisure, health, sport and education, and will open 365 days a year. Built on the Birchall Estate, a 300-acre former open cast site at Unstone, bordering the A61, Peak Resort will feature 2000 hotel rooms, 250 lodges and will allow guests to choose from four different price bands for accommodation. The partnership with the Grand Heritage Hotel Group was so important it was announced by David Cameron and President Obama and will see delivery of a new Gateway to the great outdoors. If you think, Centre Parcs or Disney these are closed environments, and when you’re in you buy your services from within, Peak Resort is built on a ski resort approach, acting as an enabler to local services and although you can

stay on site it encourages you to get out and use the 540sq miles that is the Peak District together with local services such as eateries and shopping in Chesterfield and the surrounding area. A partnership with Chesterfield college will allow the development of Pathfinders, guides who enable visitors to make the best of their trip. In addition, it’s expected that the site will host 400 students who will be able to learn and earn through the site. A similar scheme is already running in America and therefore the partnership with Grand Heritage Hotels is so important. The scheme is being delivered in three phases with 1000 beds opening in 2019 at prices from £25 to £1000 a night. The bulldozers are already on site so please keep an eye on the development of what could be a game changer for Chesterfield. All good stuff, whether you embrace change or not it looks like you can’t avoid it and I have to admit if things deliver as planned, it looks very promising for Chesterfield.

magine. You’re balancing 500bhp through your rear wheel and using a patch of rubber about half the size of an S40 Local, you need to make sure it doesn’t spin, you need to keep your weight forward to keep the front wheel low and there’s just a few seconds to the finish line. Now relax and concentrate on stopping.

The aim is to cover a quarter mile in as close to 8.5 seconds as you can. The speed 180mph! But what’s this got to do with S40 Local? It’s all about contacts, people, businesses. Ian Chrichlow runs a small business, Merlin GRP Flat Roofing, he approached Guy Tomlinson at SEO Co Pilot to improve his web site and ranking in internet search results. Guy helped set up S40 Local’s website, is also a local Chesterfield Champion and I’ve known him for a few years now. “Ian’s website was down on page 6 of Google and it looked a bit dated” says Guy. “He was keen to improve the site and see a better ranking in searches. We met and assessed his site, it wasn’t performing well and wasn’t mobile friendly, we made some improvements, focused on SEO and he’s now on page one as a result. But more importantly we clicked and got on well. Ian invited us down to Santa Pod to see him race his Suzuki, we joked that I should put some stickers on the bike, one thing led to another and now we sponsor Ian, racing under the name ‘Fossil Fuellers’ and have our logo on the bike and clothing.” The partnership is a great way to support a local business and one of my customers, it’s a great opportunity for team building events, we get the whole team down to Santa Pod for the weekend and enjoy the racing. Ian has been a keen motorcyclist since the age of 14. “I started out on a motor crosser, did some Kart racing, track days and ended up circuit racing. In the 90s I raced an ex Moto GP Honda RS250 and Kawasaki ZX10R, it was exciting to start with but I got a bit bored going around in circles. “A few years ago I went along to the Bulldog Bash, an event organised by the Hells Angels motorcycle club at Shakespeare County Raceway, focused on drag racing. I was impressed, so much so that I sold the Honda and took delivery of a Suzuki Hayabusa with nitrous oxide injection, this produced 260bhp could cover the ¼ mile in 9.1 seconds with a top speed of around 160mph on the run.” Ian was hooked. Today he has a different bike, still a Hayabusa but now with a turbo and 500bhp at the wheels. Let’s get that into perspective, my van has less than a quarter of this power and weighs over 3000Kg!

“On the new bike, I’ve managed 8.21 seconds and 173mph. The bike is good for 7 seconds which I aim to do this year” Ian points out. 80% of drag races are about hitting an exact time, races categorized in time brackets, Ian competes in the 8.5 second bracket. He has to cross the line as close to 8.5 seconds after the lights change as he can. This year’s goal is the U.K. National championship on 8.50 bracket bike. “The perfect run is all about the start” says Ian, “you need to get all the power down through the back wheel without causing it to spin and lose traction. We run the tyres as low as 10psi and the contact patch (the size of the rubber on the ground) is about 6” x 4”. The track is covered in glue, it has been known for people to hop off the start line leaving shoes stuck to the track! We also spin the tyres up before a run to get them sticky. “If everything works well off the line the front wheel will hover about 6” above the track for the first half of the run, popping up again with each gear change. “Then you need to control the last half of the run to hit your time bracket target.” I asked Ian why he does it “It’s the adrenaline rush, until you've tried it you can’t appreciate the rush. I’ve only been drag racing about 5 or 6 seasons and the feeling you get every time you roll out onto the start area is amazing, the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up now just thinking about it!” “Friends say ‘there’s not much to that is there, you just crack the throttle open and hang on’, that’s nowhere close, there’s so much more to it and the bracketed racing adds an additional level of technicality.” I’ve never been to a drag race, I’ve visited circuits, even been on track days myself on my bike but this has left me wanting a trip to Santa Pod. Ian explained, “if you go on the right day, you can see 10,000bhp top fuel dragsters do the ¼ mile in 4 seconds with a 320mph terminal speed!” Just watching this sounds like a rush. Surprisingly Ian doesn't ride on the road preferring to gets his two wheel kicks from racing. Last question, why Fossil Fuellers? “At age 58 isn’t it obvious?” he chuckles. his is your opportunity to visit artists and artisans throughout Derbyshire, discuss their work with them and maybe even buy a work of art to take home! This is our eleventh year and one in which we are building on previous success by trying some new ideas. As well as the usual Spring Bank holiday three day event, many artists will now open on selected days through a further six days. This is the ‘Plus’ part of the event, and will give everyone a little more time to get around to seeing the artists and venues they want to see. Please check in the brochure or website to see which venues are open extra days. We distribute brochures throughout Derbyshire and beyond, in libraries, hotels, galleries, cafes etc. So start choosing the venues you want to visit, checking where refreshments are available and planning the route for your day(s) out. In the S40 area the largest venues are Holymoorside Village Hall with eleven artists and West Studios at Chesterfield College showing work by contemporary students. The Monkey Park Cafe in Brampton has five artists upstairs. The United Reform Church Hall in Holymoorside features the work of Dodeka Designers and 667 Chatsworth Road has a textile and a landscape artist.

Barbara Coulam: Plaques, bowls, lights and coasters, made from recycled glass, inspired by decorative architectural forms derived from nature. Eilean Wilding: Ideas developed in sketchbooks, created with the mixed media of textiles and painting as individual pieces. Sheila Baldock: Watercolour painting gives her joy but she's continually striving to develop further. Some artists are new to the Village Hall in Holymoorside including: Karan Fixter: Ceramic clocks, wall tiles and sculpture. Angie Hardwick: Ceramic work using cast replicas of toys to explore the trials of parenthood. Sarah Sharpe: Paintings and prints inspired by the entanglement of human emotions and nature. Ben Sherwin: Landscape painting aiming to communicate the power and peace of nature. The Village Hall is also hosting some artists who have exhibited their work at this venue before: Gwenda Culkin: Textile work inspired by Boro, Indian and Nepalise textiles. Jerry Daniel: Pictorial Landscape photography. Olinda Everett: Ceramic artist influenced by her native Portugal and the sea.

Holymoorside Village Hall and United Reform Church Hall have featured regularly in this annual event, thanks to the support of the Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival. Both venues will be providing refreshments prepared by volunteers raising funds for local charities.

The artists exhibiting in the United Reform Church in Holymoorside are members of a group called Dodeka Designers. A particular feature of the group centres around themed exhibitions. So who is this ‘Jo at Kip’ we keep telling you to contact for a free assessment for your child? Marilyn Hamilton (Businss Advisor to Kip McGrath) Actually Jo Linthwaite is a remarkable woman who has had an amazing journey through her career to get to the position of director/ owner of Kip McGrath in both Matlock and Chesterfield. She is a local girl who comes from nearby Idridghay and if you did a ‘’who do you think you are?’’ on her ancestors they are all local since the 1400s and one of them even built the village church! Jo wasn’t always in the education business and started her career in the Department of Work and Pensions as a civil servant. For 12 years she worked with the long term unemployed, exoffenders, addicts and the homeless. It was a gruelling job which required all her compassion and understanding and left her with the very strong personal qualities that have seen her through some interesting times since then.

with 600 pupils as a Director of Studies (that is equivalent to a Head teacher over here). A lone woman in a challenging land! From there she was recruited to head up a school in Sumatra, later moving to run two in Java with a total of 1200 students and a much larger staff and responsibilities. Of course being Jo she learned Indonesian in order to be more effective in her new homeland. After seven years, this position was followed by one in Lebanon where she moved into a Further Education college. Attempts to learn Lebanese Arabic were less successful! By now very experienced in teaching and managing an education establishment, the whole world beckoned her career wise. However Jo decided to return to the UK, and Derbyshire in particular, to be closer to her family.

Deciding to make a career change, Jo trained to become a teacher whilst still working for DWP. Not content with a tough year of working and studying at the same time, she decided to move to Poland the following year and do some teaching of English. There she picked up a little Polish, although it was a while ago so don’t test her now! Following that position she moved overseas to Hong Kong and worked with kindergarten children. This was the time before Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule. With a brief interruption to take in Canada and life there, she then returned to Asia and took a position in a Shanghai University. From there her career really took off and having conquered the Mandarin language to a useful level she moved on to northern China to a school

Determined to ‘do something useful’ she took on the franchise with Kip McGrath for Matlock and then Chesterfield where we see her today. All her life experiences make her super successful in her results with those students, in her care and her personal knowledge of what it takes to succeed against sometimes seemingly overwhelming situations. These are life lessons she passes onto her students. Summer Food A Tartiflette with a Twist

Well summer is supposedly just around the corner (let’s hope so anyway) and so it’s time to start cooking up some really tasty dishes.

I thought I’d share something to get you in the mood for summer, it’s so easy to make and a perfect dish for

500g Jersey royal potatoes thinly sliced Just roll pastry (sheets if you want ease) 150g crème fraiche (low fat if you are trying to be good!) 1 egg Salt + Pepper 30g mature cheddar cheese grated 3 tsp of parmesan 1 small white onion finely chopped 1/2 tsp of Dijon mustard Pack of Asparagus tips Pancetta slices (5 or so)

Heat the oven to 220c Slice the potatoes very finely. Add to a pan of boiling water and cook for about 5-8 mins. Drain and put to one side. Add the crème fraiche to a bowl with 1 egg, grated cheese, parmesan, salt and pepper, onion, dijon mustard and mix everything together. Roll the pastry out thinly into a rectangular shape or cut the ready rolled pastry to the size you want for your dish and score it lightly with a sharp knife and put into an ovenproof dish (lightly greased). Spread the sauce mixture to the inside of the tart and then layer the potatoes across the surface of the tart. Blanch the asparagus tips in hot water for 2-3 minutes then layer on top of the tart. Finish with the pancetta slices over the top and bake in the oven for around 20 minutes.

Tip

Leave the tart to cool for about 5 minutes before you start slicing it up or it can get a little messy! Toasted Pine nuts to garnish are a great way to finish off this dish. Pop them on a baking tray and grill for a couple of minutes, they burn quickly so keep a close eye on them!

Chris Radford (Brampton Brewery) brings us up to speed with a special anniversary beer. "We were aware of Captain Marsden, his links to the Brewery and his achievements in the Great War, but it had slipped our attention that April

2017 represents 100 years since he was lost in action. We noticed a random ‘tweet’ from a guy called Mike Briggs who maintains an excellent website (derbyshireterritorials.wordpress.com/) which details and celebrates the battalions from this area, which mentioned the 100th anniversary. Through Mike we met Mark Marsden – great nephew of Captain JH Marsden and resident of Holymoorside – and thought we should mark the anniversary by producing this special beer."

John Horace (“Jack”) Marsden was born on 25th July 1879 to John Marsden, a Solicitor in Chesterfield, and Mary Elizabeth. He was educated at Chesterfield Grammar School and the Royal Masonic School for Boys in London. By the age of 22 he was in the employment of Brampton Brewery, and is recorded in the census of 1901 as being a “Master Brewer”. In the same year, Walter Wilkinson (Head Brewer at Brampton Brewery since 1890 and now Brewery Manager) was lodging in the Marsden household, with the now widowed Mary Elizabeth at the head of the family. Walter was to marry John Horace’s sister, Mary Ethel, sometime later the same year. John Marsden remained a brewer at Brampton until being commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment shortly after the outbreak of the Great War and he joined the 2/6th (Territorial) Battalion at their Headquarters in the Empire Hotel at Buxton in November 1914. He was quickly made the Battalion’s first Transport Officer and proceeded with them to the Harpenden training area in the spring of 1915. April 1916 saw the 2/6th Battalion boarding the Mail Steamer Ulster at Liverpool docks and heading to Dublin to help suppress the Easter Rising, where they would suffer their first casualties. Following a summer of flying column activity, the 2/6th returned to England before embarkation to France and the Western Front. They arrived in Boulogne on 26th February 1917 and saw their first action on the 31st March when they were called upon to attack the villages of Vendelles and Jeancourt during the German retreat to the Hindenburg line. By this time, John Marsden had been promoted to Captain and was commanding a Rifle Company. The 2/6th Battalion captured all their objectives and in doing so Captain Marsden was recorded as showing “conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty”. A month later on the 27th April the Sherwood Foresters Brigade was called upon to assault a German strong point known as ‘Cologne Farm’. The 2/6th Battalion formed the right flank and were instructed to attack and hold an area of former quarry workings. Details of this action are scant, but it is clear that the 2/6th achieved their objectives; however, this came at a heavy price. Captain Marsden and thirty-six Officers and men from the Battalion were killed in action or missing presumed dead and numerous others were wounded, some fatally. Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk

The bodies of John Marsden and fourteen other Derbyshire men killed in action that day were removed and buried in a small cemetery behind the British lines. Their bodies now lie next to each other in a ‘Sherwood row’; comrades in arms united in death. The bodies of thirteen men were not recovered at the time and they are now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing. In 1953 a single isolated grave was found containing the bodies of six men from the 2/6th Battalion and they were subsequently reburied. On 18th June 1917 the London Gazette announced that Captain John Horace Marsden had been posthumously awarded the Military Cross: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his men in the most gallant manner and succeeded in capturing nine prisoners. He has at all times set a splendid example of courage and determination.”

Queen's Park Cyclefest Saturday 10 June

To mark the Women's Tour taking place in Chesterfield, local cycle based business Wheely Fun Wheels will be leading rides and holding a host of events in Queen's Park to celebrate cycling. The group will lead up to four rides into town from Whittington Moor, Loundsley Green, Somersall Park & Storforth Lane. The rides will leave at 9.00am, getting to town in plenty of time for the start of the stage at 10.30am. Local primary and junior schools have been invited to nominate six girl pupils plus a parent for the chance to have access to reserved spectator areas at the start and finish of the stage. Those groups will also take part in a mass ride, following the start, from the town hall, into the Queen’s Park and another mass ride along the finish straight.

There will be stalls promoting cycling plus a ‘slow bike race’ with a prize for the winner. The Queen’s Park event will culminate in riders from Eroica Britannia arriving and recreating the vintage photo (below) showing a race that took place in the Queen’s Park - school groups and adults will form the crowd in the background! All the specific groups will then have a timed slot to cycle along the finish straight of the Tour route. And one infant school will be invited to provide a team to use drop handlebar balance bikes along the finish straight. Members of the public are welcome to join the rides into town and be with us in Queen’s Park. Between the race leaving and arriving back in town there will be a cycling event in Queen’s Park. Each school group will do a couple of laps of the old cycle race track around the cricket pitch. Did you know it used to be a cycle track? Other groups including ‘Breeze’, Inclusive Pedals, Brampton Bicycle Club and other groups will have a chance to complete laps too. The 2nd Brampton Scouts will be completing 75 laps of the park to celebrate their 75th anniversary.

Chesterfield Bowling Club Official Opening for the 2017 Season Chesterfield Bowling Club has officially opened its historic bowling green on Beetwell Street for another year, with President Bob Meakin traditionally rolling the first ball to launch the 2017 season. Patient Group Members of the Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Chatsworth Road Medical Centre were given an informative and interesting talk about the Local Charity, The Nenna Kind at their last Meeting on Wednesday 22 February. Do you have an old tool in your shed that no longer works properly but you can’t bear to throw it away? You think it should be simple to repair but don’t know where to go or what’s the best option. On the other hand, your friend may have a chair with a broken leg and can’t work out how to put it back together. Over the road, your neighbour is struggling to use their laptop now they’ve converted to Windows 10. Have you thought about bringing them along to Transition Chesterfield’s bimonthly Repair Café?

At our last Repair Café, Transition Chesterfield’s team of fixperts managed to fix or advise on a whole range of items including: a couple of lawnmowers, a sander, a chainsaw, various electronic items e.g. printer, radio, DVD player, household furniture including lamps and also a stuck dress zip and a ripped cardigan. Not all items can be fixed as sometimes the cost of new parts can be prohibitive but sometimes it’s also good to know that something is beyond repair and should be replaced. In such cases, advice is given on future purchases or where to go for a suitable expert repairer. One visitor commented: “What a marvellous idea and such quick service. And now I can mow my lawn. I’ll be telling everyone about it.” We’re based upstairs at Monkey Park Social Enterprise, corner of Clifton & Chester St, Chesterfield S40 1DN. Nenna Kind offers support to people affected by cancer in a number of different ways – They have a Drop in Centre which opened in 2012 on the 3rd floor of Dents Chambers where people can go for a drink and a chat. They offer help and advice on benefits and complementary therapies such as reflexology, head massage and shiatsu, are available and are free of charge. This centre is open Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fridays from 10.00am-4.00pm. Nenna Kind also offers a fantastic free Bus Service which runs twice a day to and from Chesterfield to Western Park Hospital for appointments providing a stress free journey without the worry of driving and parking. We Are Restless Emily is a 19-year-old resident of Chesterfield and a current sports student at Leeds Beckett University and will be travelling to Zimbabwe this year. "Since a young age I have always dreamed of travelling far and wide and this year’s adventures take me to Zimbabwe, a country full of culture, beautiful scenery and amazing people. The aim of this trip is to teach and educate in schools and community centres about sexual health and general health rights but also about employability skills such a CV writing. I will be working for a charity called Restless Development which focus is in youth empowerment with the vision of 'Pushing boundaries. Shaping today. Creating tomorrow'. The current population of the world is at “peak youth” which means that at this moment in time there are more young people then there ever has been or ever will be.

Zimbabwe’s youth population (18-25), make up 50% of the overall population in the country. 'We are who we serve' is a youth led organisation who teach and educate. One of the charities main aims is to end HIV and AIDS by 2030 and the majority of my work will involve education and reduction of the stigma that is found within communities from rural communities, we will be encouraging people to speak out about their sexual health and rights without being judged. During my trip I will stay with a host family so I will be fully submerged in Zimbabwean culture and society. "After my three months away, I will carry out action at home, getting involved with my community raising awareness about what is important to our society. For this I aim to raise awareness for our local food banks, how people can help and also save household waste in the process. I also want to make people aware of their local

Holymoorside 10K

Runners & spectators alike make a date for 14 May The Holymoorside 10k race committee are delighted to announce that the 8th annual Holymoorside 10k Road Race and Fun Run will take place on Sunday 14th May 2017 in the picturesque Derbyshire village of Holymoorside. The 10k course passes through scenic Derbyshire countryside, along quiet country lanes. Starting at the Village Hall, the course runs uphill for 4km and then winds across the moor with a fast, downhill finish into the village. The course is run entirely on the road with a lap of the village playing fields at the finish. The race starts at 10.30am and is open to runners aged 15 and over. The 10k race is run under UKA rules and is accurately measured. Parking, First Aid facilities, drinks stations, km markers, limited changing facilities and supervised baggage storage are provided. eing in the garden on any sunny day in May has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be slightly cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings… 1. As potato shoots appear do not forget to ‘earth up’ the growing potato shoots. This serves two purposes – young potato shoots do not like frosty weather, so cover over the shoots with soil for protection and it also helps to avoid young tubers from turning green with sunlight exposure. 2. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). 3. Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: French and runner beans, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and squash as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season. 4. Towards the end of the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres, but are often displayed earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well-watered until they can go into the open garden. 5. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month seeds for both can be sewn directly into the ground. 6. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering, and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely. 7. Sow peas outside now with pea sticks in place early, and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. climbing French and runner beans) that will need them later. 8. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch), and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year. 9. It's that time of year when spring bulbs are now beyond their best, but as they fade the tidy gardener can't resist the temptation to 'tidy them'. Once the flowers have faded you can cut the head off the flower if you want to, don't cut back the leaves until they are completely yellow, and don't tie them up either, the leaves need to continue to produce chlorophyll (food), the leaf needs exposure to as much light as possible, the bulb needs the energy in the leaf to be reabsorbed into the bulb ready for next year. Once your leaves have completely withered your bulb is now dormant, so you can lift them if you need to thin them out, or move clumps that are too big to new areas, they don't generally need feeding they're very self-sufficient. 10. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs (parsley, coriander, basil etc.) for regular harvesting. Curleys is Oliver Curley, who started out in his workshop behind the Britannia Inn making outdoor garden furniture and benches, supplying many of the local pubs but he soon ran out of space and now has a workshop in Whittington Moor on Thompson Street.
