Sadly the end of an era is in sight as we talk to the family and celebrate 129 years of business at what has to be, Chatsworth Road's most loved businesses.

After a day of world class cycling in Chesterfield we reflect on the day, the events that took place and the impact events like this have on our town centre.

Hi and welcome to the start of Summer. Every year as the summer solstice approaches I think 'I'd like to watch the sunrise and sunset' ... however the reality of getting up to see it rise at 4:38am and going out again at 9:37pm to watch it set, sinks in, and I opt out. To me the solstice marks a change, the schools are winding down and people are thinking about holidays. Whether you're holidaying at home or going away there are loads of things to do locally, and it might be as simple as kicking a football around or having a picnic in the park. Talking of parks... we've been thinking for a while about how we can help raise some money for the Friends of Somersall Park. The local team have been raising funds for new play equipment to replace the ageing swings and we'd like to help.

When I think of Johnson’s Ironmongers my mind automatically replays the iconic Two Ronnie’s, 'Four Candles' sketch, and I feel a similar sense of fondness for both. In my mind it could just as well be Phil Johnson serving me! I didn’t know Phil Johnson well, although I’ve visited the shop numerous times over the years, but I know it as the kind of place you can go and pick up just the quantity you need, of whatever it is you’re after, get good advice and great service! Many of you will know that Phil is no longer with us, having sadly passed away in January this year, and it’s with a heavy heart that his daughters, Liz and Jenny have decided to close the business. As a business Johnson’s Ironmongers has been trading since 1888, that’s 129 years. When Samuel Johnson started trading, Queen Victoria was on the throne, in the same year the Financial Times published its first issue and the English Football League was established. It was also 60 years before the establishment of the NHS!

Samuel Johnson (originally from Mansfield) started as a tinsmith (or a tinker as they are also known) and brazier, this involved making items out of tin; milk churns, galvanised buckets, shovels, dustpans etc. The business was situated on the North side of Chatsworth Road a few doors up from Johnson’s & Co. The building has since been demolished, but you can see it on the picture opposite, Samuel wasn’t a giant – it just had a really small door! The nickname for the shop "Tinny Johnson's " comes from their origins as tinsmiths and braziers. Retirement was a dirty word in the Johnson family and Samuel worked into his later years together with son Edward Palmer who learnt his trade under Samuel Senior's watchful eye. “By 1898 they needed more space and moved to the present location (above), leasing 298 Chatsworth road from the Robinson’s Estate” explains Liz. “At the start they lived in the flat above and our Grandfather, Edward Johnson was born, above the shop, in 1898”. The original Ironmongers was just the end of the property that cornered Chatsworth Road and Mill Lane as shown in the photograph, but it didn’t take long before this entrepreneurial family needed more space and expanded to the additional premises at 296, previously a Corn Store. Brazing took place behind the shop and business was good. “In 1903 Edward purchased the house next door, ‘Briarfield’ for the princely sum of £300. The house,

again sadly gone today, was rented out until 1911 when the family moved in” says Liz. “Edward Palmer Johnson continued to be involved in the business, and he was still cashing up until he was in his eighties. The side window was, and still is, partially obscured to stop Great Grandfather keeping an eye on proceedings in the shop!” explains Liz. At this time, they were still manufacturing most of what they sold, but started to expand their range of products to cover most household ironmongery. Throughout the First World War Robinsons was manufacturing bandages and Johnsons was involved in creating clean tin lined boxes to keep the bandages clean to send to the Front Line. In 1916 Edward Johnson (Liz and Jenny’s grandfather) served in the army as a skilled and essential tinsmith. He was positioned behind the front line repairing equipment. “Edward was also a keen photographer, and with the entrepreneurial flair started taking photos of the lads for them to send back home, an act frowned upon at the time” explains Liz. “We recently found his medals and buttons from his jacket plus various letters in an old radio valve box in the loft, the medals still in original packaging.” Grandpa had his own interests and he started branching out during the 1920s, creating window displays of Meccano sets of Blackpool, Hornby Please mention S40 Local · Page 5

train sets and radios. In fact in the 1939 census he describes himself as a radiosales man and service engineer, “he had a real interest in radios and loved to take them to customers and demonstrate the valve radios” says Liz. Edward Palmer worked until his death in 1947 and left a complex will that turned Johnson's into a Limited Company. Phil was included in the detail of the estate but was required to do a three year apprenticeship outside Chesterfield. “Dad had wanted to be a dentist or join the RAF but travelled to Nottingham to Thomas Dank’s by motorcycle in the summer and by train in the winter to gain his apprenticeship. In 1952 he took over the reins and started running the business.” Grandpa slowly reduced his hours but kept in touch with customers through the business. He died in 1975 leaving Phil to run the business until he sadly passed away in January this year. Phil and Myra married on Easter Monday in 1955, they chose this particular day as the shop was shut, allowing himself five days off for a honeymoon returning to open the shop on the Saturday. “Mum worked alongside Dad from the mid 1970’s until she was unable to work; she unfortunately had to finish due to Alzheimer’s – and is now in a care home”. “We were always busy” remembers Liz. “Jenny and I worked in the shop from a young age helping to deliver ladders and repair lawn mowers. Although Dad gave up the lawn mower repairs as he got too many callPage 6 www.s40local.co.uk

outs from old ladies wanting their broken lawn mowers repairing on a Sunday afternoon (above).” “We always did well in national disasters”, remembers Liz, “strikes and power cuts were good for business. The shop had a generator that we’d use to light the shop, we were often the only one lit along the road, and we’d hire it out to the car auction when the shop was closed.We also did well selling Davy lamps, candles and paraffin during blackouts” says Liz. “To Phil Johnson the shop was his life. He loved it and carried on working at the shop full time - he even worked on the day he passed away in January this year. With Mum in care, this was his focus and his knowledge was second to none, so it was always good to have him around” explains Liz. “He said he always enjoyed buying something for 50p and selling it for a pound.” We’ve talked a lot about the 129-year history, but what of the future for Johnson’s? “Closing the shop has been a really hard decision. The building and business have been a part of Chatsworth Road for over a hundred years, but after a lot of heart searching we have decided to close the shop.” Both Liz and Jenny have been brought up to understand that the shop comes first, but with national chains slowly eating away at profits and with the internet enabling us to order goods and have them delivered to the door the next morning – it’s difficult for Johnson’s to compete with the convenience.

Fancy getting involved in a great day of activities at the Medieval Fun Day? Chesterfield's annual event takes place on Tuesday 25 July from 10am to 4pm and will see a host of fun events taking place in and around the town centre including: • Market stalls from charity stands, street food plus a whole host of traders from Chesterfield’s general and flea markets • Medieval themed entertainment in the market place and Market Hall including a court jester, medieval beggars, medieval goblins, and a realistic roaring dragon • Medieval encampment in the grounds of the Crooked Spire with troop marches at 11am and 1.30pm and watch out for the skirmishes taking place at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Find out more about life in the Middle Ages at Chesterfield Museum. Learn about religion and battlefield surgery and the diseases, illnesses and curses that people suffered from in the middle ages. • Take a trip up Chesterfield’s world-famous Crooked Spire – tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children. There will also be a fun fair in the main Market Place on Tues 25 July and Wed 26 July. The medieval fun day promises to be a great day out and a way for families to learn together about the past. A Day at the Races World Class Women's Cycling in Chesterfield Words: Paul Chapman

omen’s cycling might not yet have the profile of some other sports, but on Saturday 10 June Chesterfield and Derbyshire hosted the top women’s cyclists in the world as they competed in day four of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, the penultimate day, preceding the final day in London. It was a grey start to the day, but that didn’t stop Chesterfield coming out in support of the event.

I was leading a small group of cyclists from the Brampton Bicycle Club into town for the day’s events. I met Mr Lawrence and a group from Old Hall School in Somersall Park, and we rode along the Hipper Trail into town, a short, but extremely muddy Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk

Groups of school children from the area were encouraged to cycle into town, cheer the cyclist at the start outside the town hall and to head to Queen's Park for activities whilst awaiting the return of the cyclists for the finish.

ride through the park, sodden after all the rain. Approaching Boythorpe Road we met a large group from Cutthorpe and numbers swelled to about 80 as we headed to the start line at the Town Hall. The rain may have put off some spectators but the crowds were thick right along the start. At 10am the riders slowly rolled out to a mass of noise and cheering, and within seconds they’d gone. In stages like this they don’t start racing at the drop of the flag they ride out to kilometre zero to get warmed up, on this occasion kilometre zero was just before the Peak Edge hotel off Matlock Road. The riders would then head to Holestone Moor, Dethick, Lea Bridge, Whatstandwell, Wirksworth, Carsington Water, Belper, Nether Edge, Crich, Higham, Tibshelf, Hardwick, Glapwell, Bolsover, Staveley, Arkwright, Grassmoor and dropping back down Matlock Road into town finishing on Low Pavements.

The Chesterfield/Derbyshire stage is classed as a relatively short stage of just 123km, offering the opportunity to bag the title of Skoda Queen of the Mountain on climbs at Middleton Top and Crich, and a couple of opportunities to battle for Eisberg sprint points at Belper and Staveley. Ian Kinniburgh got himself positioned at Tupton and Crich as the cyclists whizzed past and sent a few photo’s of the race (this page and overleaf), commenting that “The Womens Tour of Britain was a fantastic event and it just shows what Chesterfield can do, especially as the next stage was in London.” “What about the fabulous overhead views from the ITV 4 Helicopter!” Ian added. Once the riders had headed off and the train of team cars and ambulances were out of the way, we had about 3.5 hours to kill until the riders returned for the finishing stretch along Low Pavement and we made our way back to Queen’s Park.

Back in the park Brian Reynolds of 2nd Brampton Scouts was leading his scouts to complete 75 laps of the old cycle track around the cricket pitch to celebrate the groups 75th Anniversary. Various school groups were also joining in and had been given a time slot to do some laps around the track. Alongside was a slow race, on bikes of course, to compete in. The slow race winner is the person who can get from start to finish of a measured section as slowly as possible, on their bike, not as easy as it sounds… Mr Lawrence was victorious amongst the adults, whilst Joe Chapman won the children’s ‘race’, both later received an engraved bike bell from Mark Tournier from the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership. The Charity Shop DJ provided entertainment using a bike powered generator, manned by willing volunteers, to keep the tunes playing.

Pavement, with spectators cheering us on, a lovely and hopefully memorable experience for some of the young cyclists! The biggest cheer, reserved for the final cyclists, a group of young children racing on balance bikes, complete with drop bars, towards the finish line, all smiles and enthusiasm. Alistair had secured an area for the schools group next to the finish straight, where we eagerly awaited the return of the racers. After the 123km race (77 miles) the cyclists returned to town after 3h27'48"of racing, an average speed of 35.544 km/h (22.215mph) and with three riders in the lead group Sarah Roy, Christine Majerus and Leah Kirchmann sprinted for the line, the effort clearly visible on their faces. The stage win went to Orica Scott’s Sarah Roy where she was cheered across the finish line on the cobbles of Low Pavement. Amazingly, within a few hours town was returned to normal, the visitors gone, barriers removed, roads open and the whole entourage on the way to London for the stage 5 finish of the 5-day race. Thanks again to Alastair Meikle from Wheely Fun Wheels and Mark Tournier from the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership for putting the day's activities together and Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council for bringing the event to Chesterfield.

Queen's Park was a cycling venue in the past, as pictured in this photo from the 1930s (opposite), and it was great to see it used again. During the proceedings Alastair assembled the riders to recreate the old shot, two versions, one with the ladies from the Breeze rides and the second with a group of immaculately turned out riders who would be taking part in the Eroica Vintage Cycling Festival the following weekend. All was good, we just needed a few more hundred spectators! Chesterfield Canal Trust receives Queen's Award for Voluntary Service Rod Auton from the Chesterfield Canal Trust brings us up to date with recent developments. Words & Pctures: Rod Auton

he Chesterfield Canal Trust has been selected as a recipient for The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2017. This is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK. The work the Trust does for the community was very much admired by the independent Assessment Committee, chaired by Sir Martyn Lewis CBE. The award was created by The Queen in 2002 to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, recognising excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. It is the MBE for volunteer groups. Trust Chair Robin Stonebridge said, “Receiving The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2017 represents a tremendous achievement for all of the Chesterfield Canal Trust volunteers, past and present, who have dedicated countless hours to promoting the canal and campaigning for its full restoration. We hope that everyone involved, and especially all our volunteers, feel immensely proud of the recognition that this Award represents. “4th June 2017 marks the 240th anniversary of the opening of the completed Chesterfield Canal. 2017 also marks the 40th anniversary year of the founding of the Chesterfield Canal Society which laid the foundations for the Trust. What better year could there be for the phenomenal work of the Trust’s volunteers to receive national recognition - and what better recognition than the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service? “Over the years, the Trust has received magnificent support from local communities and from the members of the Chesterfield Canal Partnership, for which we are truly thankful. Today is one for celebrating the incredible feats that dedicated volunteers can achieve, and we hope that everyone in the vicinity of the canal, whether one of the

Trust’s 1650 members or not, will join us in celebrating this honour. “We have just nine miles to complete, and once a decision has been made about the route of HS2, we want to press ahead and get the job done - something that will definitely support community wellbeing and economic growth in our region and the wider economy.” The Trust is run entirely by volunteers. These include: The Work Party, which has restored four locks, built two new locks and restored over a mile of the canal; The crews of four trip boats which carried nearly 10,000 passengers last year; The teams who take out the publicity trailer, run the pop-up café and the shop at Hollingwood Hub. In addition there are towpath rangers, maintenance volunteers, gardeners and archivists. A group built Dawn Rose, the first new Cuckoo boat for 80 years, using traditional methods only and another group is restoring the Trust’s ex-working boat, Python. Over 150 volunteers helped to run the most recent Festival. Apart from the national recognition, the Award includes: • An invitation to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which was attended on behalf of the Trust by Kath Auton (Membership Secretary) and Richard Allsopp (Lifetime Achievement Award Winner 2017) on 23rd May; • Publication of our details in a special edition of The London Gazette – available to view online; • A signed certificate from Her Majesty The Queen - presented locally by the Lord Lieutenant; • An English Crystal with the logo insignia; • Permission to use the official QAVS Logo.

SUMMER BERRY TRIFLE

Gastronamis find a way to use up all the fruit that's in the garden! Entertaining guests this summer? Been invited to friends and need to take dessert? Just fancy something nice and sweet on a summer's evening? Then look no further than my quick and easy summer berry trifle. It’s quick to make and tastes delicious and is sure to put you in the mood for summer! This recipe serves 4.

Ingredients: •

250 g ready prepared vanilla custard

•

225g strawberries

•

150g raspberries

•

130g madeira sponge

•

20g caster sugar

•

300 ml double cream

Method: •

Using a blender puree 100g of the strawberries and 40g of the raspberries. Add in the sugar and 75ml of water. Put the mix into a bowl.

•

Add the remaining fruit to the puree mix (keep a few to one side if you want to decorate the top of the trifle).

•

Put the fruit mix into a glass serving bowl.

•

Cut the madeira sponge into smallish squares and scatter over the fruit mix.

•

Whip the cream until it’s fairly stiff and then add in the vanilla custard and mix well.

•

Spoon the custard mix over the sponge and spread evenly.

•

Decorate the top with any leftover fruit you have and then chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving.

Another concern some parents have is that by coming to Kip they may be offending the teacher at school, almost as if they are experiencing a lack of confidence in the teacher. We work closely with the children’s teachers if they are aware the child is also being supported by Kip. We have had calls from some teachers worried that, as their student was doing so well at Kip, they were missing something!

The tutors at Kip are simply part of the wider team that aims to guide your child through school and prepare them for life in the outside world. Because we have a maximum of 5 students per tutor we have time to listen to our students and talk through their educational concerns. In addition we look at exam techniques and self-esteem as well as the academic items students need to improve. We work closely with many of our mainstream colleagues as we have all been in their situation with 30 odd children per class and all that paperwork! Many teachers regularly call us to discuss what we can do to help the student by working together and coordinating work. The Taste of Jamaica New Business to Chesterfield, Yvonne's Paradise Kitchen.

Yvonne's Paradise Kitchen is set to bring the taste of Jamaica to Chesterfield. Yvonne Genas was born and raised in Nottingham until 2015 when she moved to Chesterfield to be with partner Tony. "I was still working in Nottingham as a Senior Housing Officer so commuted daily, however spending a lot of time sitting in traffic used to get on my nerves so when the word 'Redundancy' came up I took the opportunity" explains Yvonne. "I then decided that I would do something different. A group of us usually go out on a Saturday evening for a meal and I noticed that the closest thing to my cultural tastes was Indian Food, the funny thing is I've only started to enjoy Indian Food recently as the herbs and spices are different to those used in Jamaican recipes. I decided to start a home cooking and delivery service, sat my Food Safety Test in April and passed, the environmental health officer came and inspected our kitchen and gave us the green light and it’s been all systems go ever since." "My parents are from Jamaica and taught me everything I know about cooking authentic Jamaican food. Within the black community food is very important and a social part of our culture, it is the heart of all events and households." Over the next few weeks Yvonne will be promoting her produce at the Food Market at St Thomas' on Sat 1 July, she'll be serving up a Caribbean themed evening at Monkey Park on Chester Street on 13 July and on 19 August she'll be at the See & Taste evening at The Peacock pub on Chatsworth Road where there'll be reggae music, a limbo dancing competition, fun quiz and prizes. Whatever food you have on your plate will cost £4 and kids just £3 so do get along and have a great evening. Yvonne will be taking orders for home delivery from the end of August so please make a note of the contact details and give Yvonne's Paradise Kitchen a try. Set a date for 22nd October 2017 For the Chesterfield Half Marathon. Redbrik Estate Agent steps in as main sponsor for the Half marathon. One of the region’s leading independent estate agents has been announced as the title sponsor of the 2017 Chesterfield Half Marathon. Redbrik Estate Agency, which has five offices based in Chesterfield and Sheffield, has pledged its support to the event with a five-year sponsorship agreement with race and event organisers MLS Contracts Ltd. The Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon will take place this year on Sunday 22nd October and is set to be one of the town’s biggest and most successful community participation events and is backed by Chesterfield Borough Council. Applications for the half marathon are open from Thursday 22nd June and you can register by visiting www.redbrikchesterfieldhalf.com. A one mile fun run will also be held in conjunction with the Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon at Queen’s Park which is open to people of all ages and abilities. The independent charity provides care to patients across North Derbyshire at

Garden Tips 10 Garden Things

Garden Tips There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. As well as routine things like mowing the grass and weeding, here are ten other things that may be necessary (depending on what you grow). 1.

If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept wellwatered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway.

Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly.

Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them.

Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use.

A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds) - harvest these before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway. Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway. (Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap at the Brampton Food Fair in October).

Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed.

If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell.

Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway!

There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and make sure they have been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover.

10. Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way.
