There are events happening in and around the area, we’ve listed those we know about, but there will be many more taking place so look out in shop windows and monitor the social media of the businesses you follow.

THE FESTIVAL It's Chatsworth Road Festival time over the weekend of Thu 5 to Sun 8 October. A time to celebrate, contribute and build community spirit - to meet neighbours and support local business and community groups. The Festival came about after a lady, returning to Chesterfield to visit family, commented to a business owner about the great local businesses. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d picked up a copy of S40 Local and decided to walk down Chatsworth on her way to do her shopping, rather than jump in the car and head for a big store. She never made it to her intended destination - she called into local businesses, spent money, drank coffee (and I suspect ate cake). She was impressed with the collection of thriving independent businesses and suggested we should celebrate this, be proud of it. The business owner phoned me and suggested a festival, which has now been running for 7 years (so thanks originally to Deidre Gage from Created Gallery). Seven years on the festival committee debate continues about whether or not we can call it a Festival; there are no marching bands, no marquees but there will undoubtedly be bunting and balloons, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evolved into a celebration!

'... why not try the Festival Pledge! For each day of the festival I will use one of the small independents, along and around Chatsworth Road.' So what exactly do we have? We have people and businesses making an effort to celebrate the fact that people support them by shopping with them, buying coffees, attending services, getting haircuts, it's a long list. We have people putting on offers, hosting events or opening extra days and extending an invitation to you, to go along, meet them, get to know them and find out more about what they do. On the next few pages you can see events listed, that we’ve been told about, but do look out for more events popping up as the 5th gets nearer. Businesses have paid for their listings this year and 50% of the income will go to the Festival organising committee, to support next year’s event. A big thank you to all the businesses that have contributed to support the fund! The Centre at St Thomas' Church plays a central role, supported by other churches and organisations in helping celebrate what we have.

Ever changing Chatsworth Road is always changing; relocations of big businesses, potential new housing developments, these bring opportunities for retailers, but often bring in larger multinationals making us the same as everywhere else. To preserve the unique community feel, we need to make sure the smaller independents can compete and survive as things change – and for that they need your custom. We’ve seen popular businesses closing their doors recently, some only a few years old and others that have been there over a hundred years; all run by families that live locally and in return, reinvest in the area – their fate is in our hands - what's the old saying 'use it or lose it'. So, take a look through the events and also look out for posters up and down Chatsworth Road, and please do your best to get along and support your local community.

I Blame The Fridge A bumbling opinion. Words: Paul Chapman

hange is a fact of life and Chatsworth Road is no exception, some old traditional businesses have disappeared recently and you know what I think is to blame. The fridge. Now bear with me on this.

To see where this starts you need to go back to a time before there were white electric powered boxes in the kitchen to keep all our food conveniently fresh. It was the early 1900s when the first vapour compression refrigeration was invented, but it wasn't until 1913 that the first domestic fridge was sold (according to Wikipedia).

So what did we do before? When we moved into our house the previous owner didn't have a fridge. In the cupboard under the stairs was a cold store. Just below ground level there was a cupboard with a few shelves, a single skin brick to the back wall and a metal mesh door. This kept food cool, not as cold as the fridge but cooler than room temperature ... and this was just 14 years ago. Before the fridge, people would have to shop more frequently and when they did, they did it locally, a walk to the butchers, then the grocers, milk or dairy from the milkman, not a supermarket in sight. 1913 was a time when people didn't have cars either so to get to the local shops they'd walk ... (there might be a sharabang).

People didn't have to walk far as every mile or two there would a collection of local businesses all doing well, all knowing there customers by name, although they might have known me as Mr Chapman - not Paul! In the process of walking around the community you'd bump into the neighbours doing the same thing, you'd talk, get to know them, their children and in doing so would create a sense of community. If little Jack or Jill was misbehaving you'd have a word, threaten them with telling their parents - people knew each other. Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk

I don't know whether we're a bit unique in our street, there are 35 houses on the cul-de-sac and I reckon we know the names of 32 families. People do know each other, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a few street â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;get togethersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and it's a great way to get to know the neighbours, after all we have to share the space, its not intrusive, no pressures are put on people but it's comforting to know a bit about the people on your doorstep.

So back to the Fridge. In 1913 along came the first domestic refrigerator and I reckon that was the first nail in the coffin of community. Now we don't need to go out every day, we can go once a week, buy in bulk, store things for longer, not a bad thing I know but chances are we stopped bumping into each other so much. The roll out of the fridge took quite a few years, and as we know, some people still survived without one into the 21st century.

I remember as a young lad going weekly, Thursday night I think it was, with my parents to a large old cinema that operated as a supermarket in Nottingham to load up what seemed like a massive trolley for the coming week, stuffing it into the boot of the Vauxhall

Community Viva and driving home. It was perhaps a few years later that the supermarket chains started to appear and dominate the high streets. This was all good for Mum and Dad, a single trip each week and everything in one place. Not so good for the markets, greengrocers, butchers, bakers, milkmen etc. People stopped buying from them so often and the pain started to be felt, nail number two. Next the internet arrived. Excellent we all thought, and perhaps still do, all this information at our fingertips and pumped into the house at amazing speeds (I still can’t get my head around the speed that data can get to us down those old twisted pair cables). Businesses looked to the web and how they could get more products to us, supermarkets offering us click and collect options, which very soon could be delivered to our door! Now I have no need to leave the house to fill the fridge up! There are even fridges who reorder for you now, perhaps they could eat it for me too!

The problem is also that large businesses have the upper hand digitally too, they can invest in the people and the technology to make internet shopping quick and easy, they can pay to get to the top of a search engine's results and be more easily found - it's just not a level playing field.

Today the internet allows us to order and receive goods direct, to work remotely, to watch films in the comfort of the front room, to talk to people face to face (well screen to screen), to play games with each other, find a partner … you get the picture and much of it is fantastic. But - many of the things we used to do that involve interaction with other human beings can be done from home. Now the lid of community coffin is well and truly nailed shut!

The impact of this convenience is felt by all businesses, recently Chatsworth Road lost a butcher, then one of the longest surviving hardware stores who have to compete with not one but two nationwide retailers close by, need a pack of screws, no problem order by 8pm and we’ll have it with you tomorrow!

Some people are talking about a change though. The signs are that we're starting to shop more frequently, to buy smaller quantities. It’s too late for many but some smaller businesses are becoming more specialist, and who knows in a few years there might be a change.

This is all very timely. The Chatsworth Road Festival started when a resident commented to a local business owner how great the selection of independent businesses is on Chatsworth Road, would she think the same today? I hope she would, but the community need to continue to support those people that put hours of hard work into providing you wiht the perfect offering. This all affects the financial buoyancy of the community, profits of the retail giants are not owned or distributed locally but the profits of independents are typically reinvested and spent locally.

If the only thing to take from this article is to flick through S40 Local, note the businesses and when you need services think of these guys first I feel like I’m succeeding. So there you have it and it’s all the fault of the fridge!

’ve heard of Barrow Hill Roundhouse, I know it has something to do with trains and hosts a Real (or Rail) Ale festival but apart from that I haven’t thought much about it.

A Roundhouse is used for servicing and storing locomotives and turning locomotives around – it's a large shed with a giant turntable in the centre. What I hadn’t realised is:

• Barrow Hill is a unique heritage site, being the last operational roundhouse engine shed in Great Britain.

• It’s only 6 or 7 miles away, which as days out go, is pretty close by • And… it’s hosting a visit from Flying Scotsman, and the Flying Scotsman’s sister engine Tornado over the weekend of the 22, 23 and 24 September… even for someone who doesn’t know much about trains, I’ve heard of Flying Scotsman and my interest is piqued.

The visits by these world famous engines are all part of the Grand Opening Gala, to celebrate the completion of the £1.2 million Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) restoration project – which started back in 2016.

If you know your locomotives, the star icons of steam, on loan from the National Railway Museum, are also know as; A3 60103 “Flying Scotsman” and A1 60163 “Tornado” – known as the East Coast racehorse for its ability to reach 100mph. And this will be the first visit to the Roundhouse by “Flying Scotsman” since 1974. The event will give you the opportunity to get up close to the locomotives against the unique and authentic backdrop of the Roundhouse. Ticket entry to the event will include a train ride behind these locos. The Heritage Lottery Fund has made possible a project called "Moving Forward" which has undertaken essential renovation work to the Roundhouse, retaining the unique working atmosphere, and will see this attraction really step up its tourism game by providing a

new major exhibition, cafe, shop and visitor entrance, plus space for corporate events and local groups.

was completed in November 1870 at a cost of £16,445 4s 9d. It comprises 24 roads of which the longest is 80 feet, the shortest 60 feet.

Railways, trains and steam trains in particular had a massive impact on our nation’s ability to develop as a world leader and are a passion for many people.

In 1989 Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society was established to save the Roundhouse from demolition.

History: Barrow Hill

The original station, 'Staveley', opened in 1841, replaced by a new station in 1888.

The new station was renamed 'Barrow Hill and Stavely Works' in 1900, the station later renamed a third time as 'Barrow Hill' in 1951 and eventually closing in 1954. In 1865 an engine shed was built near the station with a capacity for four engines.

1866 the Midland Railway signed an agreement with Staveley Works to purchase and operate the works internal private railway for 100 years known as the '100 year agreement'.

A vast increase in traffic created a need for more locomotives and a much larger shed - the result was the present Roundhouse, a unique example of 19th century railway architecture and the last surviving operational roundhouse engine shed in Great Britain. Construction commenced in July 1869 and

From 1870 it was in continuous use until it closed its doors in 1991, a working life of 121 years.

It took two years for the Society to have the Roundhouse and its associated buildings Grade 2 Listed by the Department of the Environment.

Next they needed to purchase the building from the British Rail Property Board, this took another three years, by which time the site and buildings had been heavily vandalised. Refurbishment took several years, funded from Chesterfield Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, The Transport Trust, North Derbyshire Training and Enterprise Council, European Regional Development Fund and the Government SRB Fund. Following many months of work by dedicated volunteers the site was cleared of vegetation, stolen track replaced and the site made secure. A major clean-up commenced and remarkably the 24 roads around the turntable were still in situ and intact. In July 1998 the engine shed opened its doors to the public who were treated to four

History steam engines inside the shed. It opened up again on the weekend of 12-13th December 1998 hosting a whole range of engines for enthusiasts.

On Saturday the 16th of January 1999 Barrow Hill Roundhouse notched up another gear in preservation when 8F number 48773 paid a visit along with its support coach 99405.

It has been open regularly to the public over the last few years and played host to a wide range of important engines, but after its closure in December 2016. It's exciting to know that the weekend of 22, 23, and 24 September will give visitors, old and new, the chance to be part of the next chapter of the Roundhouse story… If you’re not around for the gala weekend, put Barrow Hill on the ‘to do’ list as it’s a unique place of local and national interest and with the HLF improvements is a great place to learn of Chesterfield’s importance in the railway history of Great Britain. Working alongside the Heritage project Kevin Fegan has written a community play directed by Carole Copeland that will be performed at the Roundhouse.

Unfortunately you may read this after the performances which are live at the Roundhouse on 21,22 and 23 September and will feature the NRM’s Flying Scotsman and Tornado.

The show will involve a cast of actors and hundreds of local people, a community choir, Ireland Colliery Brass Band and the audience will be an integral part of the play as they follow the drama in and around the Roundhouse building. Page 36 www.s40local.co.uk

Max didn't!

‘When things go wrong as they sometimes will and the road you are trudging seems all uphill, when care is pressing you down a bit, it’s when things seem worst that you must not quit!’Anon. This is exactly the situation that Max found himself in last October 2016 when his GCSE results came in and he had brilliant grades apart from English where he managed a weak grade D. Max had plans to go to University and a place in Year 12 to do his A levels, but without a grade C in English he was told by the school that he would have to leave. He and his mum were anxious and extremely stressed as you can imagine. The school helped by booking the GCSE English resit exam and offering extra English lessons in the evening, but Max struggled to attend because of where he lived. The stakes felt very high, confidence felt very low and his dreams of a place at university felt distant indeed. With three weeks to go until the exam they went to Jo at Kip who carefully assessed his previous exam marks and prepared a programme to focus on his main areas of weakness. They arranged his sessions but they could only fit in 5 sessions before the exam! It quickly became clear that Max knew his stuff but had difficulty getting his thoughts on to paper. After a couple of sessions Max began to relax and the fog of confusion and doubt began to lift. By working on his exam technique and confidence, Max had time to think, stopped panicking and getting started was no longer a problem. He got his grade C! And the moral of this tale is… Whatever your child’s GCSE results were this year there is hope. Don’t panic, help and support is available. Talk to your school about options, get those resits booked and give Jo a ring. Tailor-made programmes for each student are the norm for all at Kip and let us help you and your child on to success! For the third successive year, S40 Local advertiser, BRM Solicitors has joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support to exclusively offer a free will writing service during September and October to support Macmillan in Chesterfield.

Including Gift Aid donations, The Chesterfield law firm has so far raised over £30,000 for the Macmillan appeal to help build the NGS Macmillan Unit Appeal, at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. With the centre now open, the firm is continuing its support by getting behind Macmillan’s ongoing work in the region to provide better cancer care. Rotary Club Satelite Club Awards Ashover Classic Car & Bike Show

busy younger business people in the town. Chesterfield president Peter Barr shared the success with satellite club members at their July monthly meeting held at Brampton Manor. One of the many annual events on the Rotary Calendar is the Ashover Classic Car & Bike Show. This year the weather was kind and there was another good attendance for this year's show held at Rectory Fields on Sunday 23 July 2017. Organised jointly by the Rotary Club's of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Scarsdale, Clay Cross and Matlock, the show raises thousands for local charities.

'Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problemsolvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.' This is very true of the Chesterfield Rotary District where members of the recently formed Rotary Satellite Club of Chesterfield have significantly contributed to a prestigious award presented each year to only one club in Rotary District 1220, which covers 69 Rotary clubs throughout Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and parts of Lincolnshire. 'The Gordon Taylor Trophy' for the Best Club in District 1220 has been presented to Chesterfield Rotary Club by District Governor Michael Longdon, not only for its varied programme of charitable events, but mainly for being the first club to set up a thriving satellite club of

The Final Push Any spare pennies (or pounds) for FOSP! The Friends of Somersall Park Group have had a great year! With several successful funding bids including £10,000 from Tesco Bags of Help, and more recently a tremendous £25,000 from Viridor, they are now getting closer to the total needed for the planned replacement of the Play Area. ‘Our total fund now stands at £53,000. We have had several generous donations from local individuals and groups, and are inching closer to the required amount of £80k. It finally feels that we will get there and we would urge any local people who would love to see an amazing new Play Area for our young people to please give generously!’ said Rebecca Robinson, Chairperson. The children of Walton have waited patiently as so many other parks around Chesterfield have gotten their facelift. Unfortunately, spending cuts and the fact the Walton is seen as an affluent area, mean we have been at the back of the queue. The local community have taken matters into their own hands though now and FOSP are so very close to making

this happen! They will continue to apply for grants wherever possible, but with funding options becoming increasingly limited, they are also looking for any donations from local people or businesses.

Every penny will be spent on the park – I can’t think of a better way to make a difference – not only to our children, but the next generation too! The pot from Justgiving stands at over £1,000 so far, so a huge thanks to everyone who has donated.’

That VAN!

Chesterfield Foodbank Recently we recieved a note from Ian Birchmore, the Project Manager at Chesterfield Foodbank. It lifted spirits here at S40 Local, from an article we did a few months ago some fantastic news for the Foodbank.

Dermot whoever you are, can I express a huge thanks for taking the time to read the article and even more thanks for the actions you then took. You are a star. Ian's note is below.

As you probably know Chesterﬁeld Foodbank has been saving up for a small van to carry all our food and toiletries from donor to client. It was worked out that, between three volunteers’ cars, we shifted 47 tons in the last year alone.

Having been going now for four years, our dropping off points and distribution centres have been a nightmare to service. With our new vehicle, we can take larger loads in one go, saving us time and money. Back in June we had £4,000 in the van fund raised by individuals and churches.

After an article in S40 magazine we had a phone call from a gentleman called Dermot who introduced us to ASJ Drummond Car Sales Ltd off Chatsworth Road. We saw on the Friday, a Ford Transit Connect 1.8 4dr Diesel, which was £5,995 + vat, 2013 reg with just less than 33,000 on the clock in good condition. Although £200 was offered off the price we couldn’t afford to purchase it and we said we would leave it a week to pray and wait for the rest of the money.

The next Tuesday Dermot rang and said he would make up the difference including the VAT, plus Staveley Rotary (thanks to our friend and

volunteer Keith), Chesterfield General Charitable Fund and Loundsley Green Church donated enough to cover the Insurance, Road Tax and fuel for the next few months! Next we will be signing the outside of the van so that you will see us around Chesterfield with a more noticeable profile (give us a wave). Thanks to everyone who prayed and donated towards the cost and to local company Giraffe Graphics who did the signage on the van with a great discount. Rebecca and her partner Chris have helped Church on the Bus previously. God is good!

If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go. When leaves have fallen, this is the time to give your soft fruit: blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids, some shaping while they are dormant. Remember that next year's crop will fruit on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries & blackcurrants. When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out. Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants.

Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic, and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few). It is time to think about ordering new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm.

Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.

10. Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.
