Hi and welcome to the Summer edition. Summer holidays are here and to help keep you entertained we've made a few suggestions of places to go and things to do. They're mostly free or just a few pounds and there might be a parking charge but worth the money as they allow for legs to be stretched and minds to be exercised. We have an apology for a bit of an error in our article with Florence Chettle. We stated that there had been 25 Olympics during her 100 year life, this was incorrect. We didn't take into account that there were no Games during the Second World War - 1940 (due to being held in Japan) and 1944 (London). Also, the 1916 Games scheduled for Berlin was also cancelled. But that was before Florence was born! Thanks to a local reader for pointing this out, we're learning to never assume!

hey're here again, the school summer holidays. To help you plan the remaining five weeks I thought I'd suggest a few activities close to home, and for just a few £s.
I've taken a look at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's events, the National Trust sites locally and then a selection from the website Visitchesterfield. Whatever you do, enjoy the time and have a great summer.

The top picnic spots from the National Trust in Derbyshire Whether it's a family day out or a gathering of friends, here are a few of the National Trust's local picnic spots for us to enjoy this season.
Hardwick Hall There are lots of different nooks and crannies around the park and gardens to picnic in. • Upper Park just before you enter Park Piece on the Oak walk - it’s a really peaceful spot in which to relax. • Lady Spencer's Walk, just a little bit further along from the woodland play trail. • The orchard in the garden is a great place to lay your picnic blanket. • Down by the Ponds, a peaceful spot, home to lots of wildlife and a great view back up to the House. • The Stableyard has a good selection of picnic benches and if you're looking for shade or shelter, the Cart Shed is a perfect place to enjoy your lunch. • Find a space near the restored Duck Decoy in Lower Park.
Longshaw Estate If you’ve got a hamper that’s too heavy to carry far, wander down from Woodcroft car park and settle down in the meadow on the right, near the Moorland Discovery Centre. There’s an array of boulders that double up as natural tables and plenty of space to spread out your picnic blankets. There’s space on the grass outside the tea room to enjoy your picnic and perhaps round it off with a proper coffee or slice of fresh cake? A short walk from the tea room, (about 500 metres) following the pink waymarkers, you’ll arrive at the pond and on the way Longshaw’s natural play trail. If you fancy a bit more activity, the area is covered with a maze of footpaths. Three waymarked walks, all start from outside the tea room - follow the coloured arrows. Pick up a leaflet from the car park or tea room, the walks are marked on a map inside the leaflet and many are buggy and wheelchair friendly. Be sure to pick up a Boggart Trail map from the shop, look out for boggarts and stop off at natural play places like Boggart rise and Boggart burrow. The National Trust have produced a leaflet outlining 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ - pick one up and keep the kids busy through the summer.

Garden and Wildlife Family Fun Saturday 25 August 2018 Bring your family to the Roundhouse to learn about the wildlife around us, that of the wider world and what we can do to protect it. There will be displays and a range of fun activities from local wildlife charities including Bumblebee Conservation Trust, East Midlands Butterfly Conservation, Mid Derbyshire Badger Group and Derbyshire Amphibian and Reptile Group.

Listen to an exciting talk on the secrets of wildlife filming from professional wildlife photographer Michael Leach at 2pm and take part in one of his fun and fascinating family friendly workshops about living and communicating with gorillas at 11am. Crooked Spire Tower Tours Weekly throughout the year Perhaps something every resident of Chesterfield should do at some point in their life, get up close to the Crooked Spire at St Mary's and All Saints Church for a bird's eye view of town.

Exhibition: Park Life Until 18 September 2018 Since Victorian times, public parks have provided a welcome green space. They are places in which people are able to relax, play and explore and can bring communities together. This exhibition explores the stories of Chesterfield's parks. There’s lots for children to do and explore at the exhibition. Bring your teddy along for a picnic – we have a picnic basket with a tea set and rug, as well as two museum teddies. Set up your picnic on our ‘grass’.

W
hen Gavin Grainger from Bottle & Thyme invited us down to try their new evening menu we jumped at the chance and weren’t disappointed.
We’ve been in a number of times and enjoyed the food and ambiance of their cafe, restaurant and bar. It’s a place that’s open all day and that morphs and changes as the day progresses and the clientele come and go. In the morning it’s a chilled place for a breakfast or brunch, they serve a lunchtime menu, coffees, teas and cake throughout the day, serve two for £10 cocktails early evening (3 to 7pm excl Sat) and as they run into their evening meal menu diners take up residence and the bar is the perfect place to pop in for a drink.
delicious and from the new menu, we felt a bit like we were road testing but can whole heartedly recommend both. The menu is extensive but not overly huge, we could have had anything from a selection of mains, steak and chips, pork cheek, summer risotto, a selection of salads and burgers, skewers, sharing boards and a great looking list of sweets although we skipped sweets and opted for another drink! The menu does include something for everyone. You’ll find Bottle & Thyme opposite the old Co-op building, which is rapidly being transformed into Chesterfield’s Premier Inn, due to open later this year with bars and restaurants in prime position at street level.
There are a small number of places in Chesterfield where I’d feel comfortable eating or drinking on my own, this is probably one of them. What’s strange about this small selection is they are all independently run and owned businesses.
Gavin and Hannah opened Bottle & Thyme in December 2016, their surroundings and neighbours a little rundown but soon to reopen with new tenants and all spruced up and looking like a small slice of Chester with a Black & White Tudor styled street scene.
The staff are friendly and attentive, there’s no pretentiousness, the music is at a comfortable volume - loud enough to hear but quiet enough that you can have a private conversation without feeling overheard or low enough that you can continue that conversation.
The whole area is undergoing a facelift, just a few steps from Stephenson Place where we featured three businesses in the last edition, and Bottle & Thyme is ideally placed to take advantage of it.
Gav explained “this is deliberate, even when we have live music playing on a Friday and Saturday night it’s quiet enough that people continue their conversations. We quite often find that when we switch to the live music people don’t realise for a while, it’s background music aimed to enhance the evening, it’s not the main focus.” The drinks menu is interesting and varied described as fine wine, craft beers, botanical cocktails and soft drinks. You can literally get your five a day just from the drinks - fig liqueurs, rhubarb gins, drinks served with rosemary, pineapple rums, served beautifully, perhaps also containing fruit and flowers... even the beers aren’t left out, pineapple, elderflower flavours to name just two. We sampled, for starters, crab parcels with sweet chilli and mango salsa, and pastrami croquettes, rocket, parmesan and wholegrain mustard mayo - both delicious and light. I don’t enjoy eating out to simply refuel, I can do that at home, if I’m paying for a meal I want it to be special and something I wouldn’t or couldn’t prepare to the same standard. All their food is cooked fresh every time, Jake is the head chef, who Gav described as a star. He’s worked his way up from simply joining the kitchen team over a year ago and clearly loves to cook. Gav’s influence on the menu is growing too, his experiments at home with fruit gins are also likely to make an appearance in the bar soon. For the main we had seared salmon, asparagus on a bed of gnocchi tossed in beetroot butter with a lemon emulsion, and halloumi and chilli skewers with courgette, red pepper, red onion, cherry tomatoes & sweet chilli dip with sweet potato fries. Again, both

Their hard work has already been rewarded with Bottle & Thyme taking Best Newcomer and Best Customer Service at the 2017 Chesterfield Food & Drink awards and being nominated for Restaurant of the Year and Best Customer Service for this year’s awards that take place in October. If you’ve not yet tried Bottle & Thyme, we recommend that you do and you’d better be quick as once the other businesses open along Knifesmithgate you could find it difficult to get a space! I've known Gav for a while now and it's great to see him enjoying running his own business, I know this was always his goal and Bottle & Thyme has quickly become another of Chesterfield's excellent locations. A
s someone raised in our local area, my childhood memories of Somersall Park were of a place filled with fun - children paddling in the river, finding sticklebacks beneath the stones, and families meeting for picnics and rowdy games of football, cricket and rounders. As a teenager, the space felt familiar and safe, even after the families had gone home for their tea. Moving back, with young children of my own, I was better able to appreciate the beauty of the space on our doorstep - but, for me, the park had lost its homely appeal. It was rare to see a familiar face, and, whilst I thought this may just be a sign of the times, it was sad to imagine the joy and activity that once occupied this gorgeous place. How wonderful, then, to now experience the incredible community achievement that is the new play park. The excitement is tangible, not only from the children, but also for the parents, who now have a place for a conversation. Rather than just a walk to the park, there is the vibe of a family outing, and enough equipment to keep the children occupied for an hour or more. The river has a new generation of visitors, attracted by the facilities. And to think that all this was achieved by a group of volunteers armed with nothing but a vision and determination. My favourite thing about the park is that its appeal appears ageless. This afternoon, when I took my preschoolers, a group of school mums had come straight from pick-up with chairs and rugs, enjoying some social time of their own as well as their children, who ran wild across the space. Older kids sat in groups next to the equipment, not playing but still choosing to opt in to the community. Even the teenagers used the goals near the park instead of those across the field. People of all ages walked their dogs past and stopped to speak to the children running from the play park to the river. It felt nostalgic; it felt like a community. I really want to thank the Friends of Somersall Park for their hours of commitment, and for not giving up when bids were lost. They have created something much more significant than the funds they raised. pecsavers has been named as Chesterfield’s favourite store. The Burlington Street branch of the national opticians’ chain was crowned Retailer of the Year at the 2018 Chesterfield Retail Awards on Wednesday 13 June. Commenting on the award win, Gareth Webster, Retail Director at Specsavers said: “Winning Retailer of the Year is a proud moment for us all. Word of mouth recommendation is the bedrock of our business and this award embodies that. It means the world to us. “Even though we’re a chain, each store is invidually owned and we try to personalise our store and service. We pride ourselves on treating customers like our family and this award recognises the personal care and attention we give to them all.” In addition to scooping the top award, Specsavers was also named as National/Multiple Retailer of the Year at the annual awards. Organised by Destination Chesterfield, the award ceremony recognises the very best shops, stores and market stalls in and around Chesterfield. The winners are all nominated by shoppers with the eventual winners being chosen by an independent panel of judges. The Retailer of the Year title was just one of 15 awards presented to 11 businesses at the fifth annual Retail Awards ceremony, which was hosted by Peak FM’s breakfast show presenters Ricky and Becky. The Retail Awards also recognised the town’s newest retailers. Ladies clothing boutique Dotique, based on Chatsworth Road, scooped the title of Best Newcomer. The store opened its doors in November last year after taking over and transforming the Johnson’s Hardware Store. Apprentice beauty therapist Chloe Hall (17) from Duckmanton, who works at The Therapy Lounge in Hasland was named the Retail Apprentice of the Year. Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Deputy Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, added: “The 2018 Chesterfield Retail Awards has been our best yet and were, once again, an excellent opportunity for us to celebrate the town’s retail sector. Opportunities Aplenty Journeys of Exchange with the Erasmus+ Project Words: Jack Alexander Images: Erasmus+ Project

une this year was a good month for me. I learned “hello” in sixteen different languages. I hosted a conference in the centre of London and took selfies at Nelson’s Column. I spent a weekend in Turin, soaked up the sites and ate some of the best food of my life. And the best part? It didn’t cost me a thing. Erasmus+ is an EU funded programme which aims to modernise education, training and youth work across Europe, offering exciting opportunities for young people to study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad. The European Union distributes funding each year to encourage the participation and engagement of young people across Europe, no matter their economic or social background. Perhaps you’re familiar with the original Erasmus program, due to its association with universities across Europe and the UK? In the past twenty years, over two million students have benefited from Erasmus grants, allowing them the chance to travel and study abroad, a life-changing experience guaranteed to broaden the mind as well as enhance employability. Well, Erasmus+ does all of that and more; widening the participation field dramatically to include anyone aged 13 to 30. That means, no matter your background, no matter whether you’ve been involved in youth work or exchange projects before, you’ve got a wealth of opportunities to explore. So, if you’re between 13 and 30 … that means YOU. Whether renovating nature trails in rural Finland, or running craft and music workshops in Hungary, Erasmus+ projects are bound to leave a lasting impression. Using Non-Formal Education techniques such as workshops, team-building exercises and group projects, we open the way to learning a whole range of skills which are somewhat sidelined by the traditional curriculum.

Here in the UK, the organisation to get involved with Erasmus+ is Momentum World, (www. momentumworld.org). For the last decade it has been their mission to enhance young people's career prospects by augmenting formal education. Through intercultural exchange projects, not only do young people gain a more comprehensive view of the interconnectivity of communities across the globe, but they build personal networks for future collaboration.
Spinning around in his chair I shook his outstretched hand, “We need to talk!” he said. It was through Momentum World that my own story began. I met one of the Directors of Momentum World, Paul Oxborough, through my Parish Council. I’d started a community litter-picking campaign and, perhaps inevitably, ended up bumping in to my local park warden. He suggested I should attend the next council meeting. I was amazed by the positive response I received from the council members. “It’s just nice to see someone doing something! All we ever get is people complaining!” one councillor said. Since then my Parish Council has offered me all the resources and support I could ask for. One of the faces sat around the table belonged to Paul. After I’d introduced myself, shared my story and returned to my seat, Paul immediately broke decorum, spinning around in his chair and introducing himself in a whisper. I shook his outstretched hand, “We need to talk!” he said. The next week we met again and had that talk, and the rest is history. Over a pint he told me all about Momentum World, its great work with Erasmus+, collaborations with the British Council, and the EVS (European Voluntary

Service) program. He described a lifestyle which greatly appealed to me; a life of internationality and social stimulation certainly, but also a life with drive and purpose. Paul’s passion for what he did was almost tangible, it was contagious. It was exactly what I’d been looking for. After I graduated from university in 2012 I saved up some money and decided to head out into the world. I bought a backpack and stuffed it full of things I thought I’d need. Some of it I still have, but most of it I don’t. I lived this way for about four years, which I suppose people think is a long time for a holiday. Piece by piece I altered the whole framework of my life, it was like taking apart a car engine, examining each greasy thing and deciding whether it was necessary. In the end I did away with it all and became a hitch-hiker. I loved and I laughed and I lost, and moved on to the next place to do it all over again. I lived without responsibility other than to myself. I learned how to be selfish without hurting others. I worked jobs I never knew existed. I was utterly inspired, and in turn inspired others. I lived. And then I returned to the UK and learned what it meant. For those of you who have ever had sea legs and then returned to land, you will know in a way how it feels to transition between living a nomadic life of unpredictability and adventure and returning home afterwards. But it is an essential part, and I saw that travel was only a chapter in the story that is my life. And for me it was time to draw that chapter to a close.
Whether renovating nature trails in rural Finland, or running craft and music workshops in Hungary, Erasmus+ projects are bound to leave a lasting impression. For all of its wonderful gifts, travel was no longer giving me what I needed. It had become without purpose. Until I met Paul, who was offering me the opportunity to travel, with purpose. It seemed too good to be true, but it is true. With Brexit looming, opportunities such as these are at risk of disappearing here in the UK. Whilst there are people campaigning around the clock to prevent the UK’s withdrawal from the Erasmus+ program, it nevertheless stresses the need for young people across the country to make the most of these chances whilst they’re there. G Sweep Services started up business earlier this year as a chimney sweep. The image of the Victorian child being sent up a chimney is long gone, today it’s a highly controlled and technical job and having a clean chimney will ensure your stove burns safely and efficiently. Today a growing number of people are looking for alternative ways to heat their homes (200,000 stoves installed per annum) and many are opening up old fireplaces and installing wood burning stoves, many with back boilers. These burners use wood, wood derived biomass, some enable coal to be used and they’re a great focal point for any room, creating a cosy (or very warm!) place to sit and chat. Unfortunately, without proper maintenance, a dirty or damaged chimney or flue can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide. A fire within a chimney stack, can not only destroy the stack but the smoke damage can be catastrophic for the homeowner. The transmitted heat to any fuel stored too close to the chimney can catch fire. Twenty two people a year die due to carbon monoxide poisoning - make sure you're not one of them. The benefits of correct maintenance speak for themselves. John has recently qualified as a Sweep after training with the National Association of Chimney Sweeps and with a career in the engineering trade for 39 years brings with him a logical approach to ensuring your installation is safe, clean and efficient.
John performs a visual assessment of all jobs, scanning the outside of the chimney with binoculars for any signs of damage before he does a smoke check to make sure there is sufficient draw up the chimney, he even carries cameras on rods so he can do a close visual inspection inside if necessary. Once happy that all is okay he sheets up the room to ensure dust is well controlled, removes the fires baffles and gets on with a thorough clean to make sure everything is installed and operating correctly, “basically it’s a dirty job, but I work hard to ensure everything is totally clean for the householder” John adds. It's recommended that solid fuel chimneys are cleaned once a year and wood burners need to be cleaned every quarter whilst they're being used, now would be a good time to call. If you want advice on what fuel to use John can help and if your insurance requires you to carry a certification for cleaning he can provide the necessary paperwork. Schools out for the summer! For every child in the land when school finishes they look forward with great excitement to summer and time with friends and family and possibly family holidays as well. However as the end of August draws nigh there is always a little shiver of excitement, anxiety and nerves over what the new class, new school or what new teachers might bring. Many of our Kip students return to us for the beginning of a new term in September so that they have the continuity of a familiar trusted tutor with whom they can discuss these transitions, mark their changes in expectations, hopes and fears. For year 6 students it is incredibly important to be in the right frame of mind for the new school, despite transition days and after the excitement of buying new school uniforms, getting PE kit for games they have never played before, the nerves kick in as the big day dawns and they become Year 7 students with potential new friends in their class. At Kip the team help support them, and sometimes their parents, through the experience of new time tables, longer days and more homework! For year 5 students the nerves are different but just as important. Year 6 brings the spectre of SATs in May and choosing a high school. Both are tough challenges, for parents as well as the students. The youngsters focus on being ‘top of the school’ but parents start to look at high schools, and can worry about getting their child
into their first choice with all the implied importance of their future education until 16. In some schools students are initially ‘streamed’ or ‘graded’ in the September classes and groups based on the previous May SAT scores. Parents pick up on this and it adds to their anxiety, which is often passed onto the child who then worries over their performance in the SATs. Here at Kip we can help calm fears, not least because we can reassure parents with regular updates on their child’s progress academically and predict levels of SAT scores. Year 9 students going into year 10 in September and the beginning of GCSE’s know that they need a minimum of a grade 4 in Maths and English or face resits until they achieve it or reach 18! We see more and more year 10 students coming in early for our GCSE classes to be sure they get the grades needed first time around. So whatever your child’s transition this September we know you will be there for them to cope with the opportunities and challenges, but if you, or they, have really strong worries on anything, why not ring Jo for a free assessment over the summer and find out what you are all actually dealing with achievement wise. Community Within Community Conelly Court & Chester House celebrate 30 years of supported independent living in Brampton Words: Paul Chapman
C
onnelly Court and Chester House, on Chester Street, Brampton, celebrate 30 years of providing secure homes in July this year and the service they provide is appreciated by the residents, some of whom have been there 20 years or more. Connelly Court, together with the neighbour block Chester House, consists of 60 flats, 36 at Connelley Court are warden aided and 24 are general needs (Chester House), which house approximately 70 residents with disabilities or those over the age of 55. Since 2013 there has been significant investment to ensure residents have a modern, safe environment in which to live. 2013 saw new kitchens installed in each of the 60 flats, gas pipework was replaced from the gas main, new secure scooter stores have been installed together with charging points and the building has been reroofed throughout. In addition Chester House has had solar panels installed to help reduce the carbon footprint of the accommodation and to reduce running costs and has had improvements to the fire alarm system which now directs calls to a warden for assessment rather than straight to the fire service. This has reduced the number of false alarm call outs – very significant when you consider that the buildings were severely damaged by fire in 1984. Since I last visited for the 25th anniversary celebrations ownership has changed, the building is now owned and run by east midlands housing homes, this gives them access to a much wider range of services. Julie Goodwin manages the site together with a small team and Steve Foster, the Caretaker, has been employed on site since emh homes opened the site. “We work closely with other agencies in the area” explains Julie. “Previously we’ve had residents from Fairplay visit us and spend time with our residents for crafts and activities.

“We also pair up for trips out, things like bowling, pub meals, Christmas lunch and party meals etc.” “People who receive assistance and support from Fairplay are also signposted to emh homes and emh care and support as we now have access to a number of properties across the Derbyshire area. Our relationship is growing as we provide continued support for people in their care.” Julie explained how three people who require support live in a bungalow in Loundsley Green. They are accompanied by a live-in carer who has access to a vehicle and can support the residents with shopping and other tasks to enable them to live a much more inclusive life on their own. “We also have a strong developing relationship with Derbyshire Stroke Support Services”, adds Julie. “A number of our residents have suffered strokes and we can offer them independence still but with the security offered by the warden aided accommodation. Pull-cords and push buttons enable us to get to residents quickly and we have records of all information relating to our residents.” During the anniversary event, Julie put together a number of display boards showing the history of the buildings, Senior Management from emh homes attended together with Guy Robinson who is a regular attendee at events, the buildings being part of the original Robinsons history (see opposite). Also, Caretaker, Steve Foster, received a special presentation for his 30 years of service to emh at Connelly Court and Chester House. Connelly Court and Chester House play an important part in Chesterfield's housing offer, secure, supported accommodation for residents that need support but also their independence.

History Originally the site of Arnold's Boiler Works, and a landmark building, the first building in Europe to feature a roof using a single central column from which the roof joists spanned, not unlike a huge umbrella. This was in the oldest section of the building but was destroyed by fire many years ago. Following Arnold’s ownership, the works were purchased by Robinsons in 1883 where they underwent significant rebuilding and extension to become the manufacturing centre for square boxes and cardboard bobbins. The two water towers were added at this point, providing the water should it be needed to supply the fire sprinkler system - essential in a building manufacturing paper and card products. The site remained with Robinsons for over 100 years before the works moved to Wheatbridge in 1982. The next few years saw the site go unused, with the original Arnold's Boiler Works being
damaged by fire in 1984. It was a further four years before emh homes acquired the site and set about an ambitious plan to demolish and rebuild parts of the site. The construction was not without its problems; work commenced on 2nd June 1986 but on the 17th June Block B, now Chester House, was severely affected by a fire. This caused major disruption to the building programme in terms of time and cost. Today the site consists of two blocks of flats linked by communal gardens and a small row of curved terrace properties, built using bricks reclaimed from the demolition works. There are now 36 properties at Connelly Court and 24 at Chester House, providing independent living with support available in Connelly Court if needed, provided by Julie Goodwin and the team, and Steve Foster, the Caretaker, who has been employed on site since emh homes opened the site.

Cider & Music at The Tramway Tavern
Needles down Grateful staff are asking residents to put their knitting needles down after a target to create 25,000 knitted poppies was reached.
Over the bank holiday weekend of 25 to 27 August, Brampton Brewery's Tramway Tavern will be hosting a Cider and music festival.
Chesterfield Borough Council is working with a range of community organisations to run a series of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One in November.
The Shambles Duo perform on 25 August and includes Kelly Bond, of 13 Bends Design, responsible for the fabulous cartoons featured in S40 Local each edition and her husband Chris. Chris Sheldon the guitarist from The Shambles is also a talented Luthier, he makes beautiful bespoke stringed instruments for many musicians across Derbyshire. Chris studied his craft as a youngster and has built up his Brampton based business over the last 30 years, providing anything from small repairs, set ups & re-fretts to a full build.
In March the council asked residents to knit or crochet poppies to form the cascade. Councillor Steve Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This idea really seems to have captured the imagination and interest of Chesterfield residents and we have been overwhelmed with how many people have knitted or crocheted poppies for the cascade.
Chris can turn his hand to all stringed instruments, at the moment he is specialising in building bespoke oil can & cigar box guitars. Tailored to suit the client's needs, they produce a truly authentic sound and can be supplied with graphics of the musician's choice. The £4k Golf Rounds
This year it's over to you! Saturday 6 October will be the 8th year of the Chatsworth Road Festival. However the committee of local residents, business owners, councillors and organisation leaders has dispanded. The group, which was completely voluntary and had very little funding, helped since the Festival started up in 2010 to market the festival, bring events together and collate information so the Festival Guide could be produced and featured in S40 Local. Jane Simmonds from St Thomas' Brampton was one of the committee who helped organise events. "It's sad that the Festival committee has come to an end but there is no reason we should not continue to celebrate the area in which we live" says Jane. "It's suggested that on Saturday 6 October (and annually on the 1st Sat of October) people put on events that do just this." Celebration Saturday is a chance to bring people together whether it be to eat cake and drink tea, or put on an event. The Festival Food Market with various pop-up stalls, traditional craft demonstrations and a birthday cake celebrating the 7th birthday of the Food Market will take place at St Thomas' Centre. The Manor Fields Fun Dog Show takes place on Sunday 9 September and is an excellent example of how events that originally started as part of the Festival continue to take place.
We might not have a village green around which to gather but we have many local parks, green spaces and locations in which to hold an event. Get the family together for a picnic in the park, if you run a business or local club or organisation, do something special and take time out to celebrate the community, of which we are all part. The area is a real gem with great pubs, restaurants and an eclectic mix of shops that sell everything from inner tubes to wedding dresses and award-winning cakes to 'fairtrade' coffee. If you want to let us know about your event, as always we'll include it in the listings within our pages (latest date for copy for the Autumn edition is Friday 31 Aug) and of course to give your event an extra push you can have an enhanced listing in the 'What's on' events for £29. Alternatively look out on social media, websites and shop windows (yes real shop windows) for events. Phil Walker (who's family you might see around delivering S40 Local) and Andy North, played five rounds of golf in a day at Chesterfield Golf Club. They started playing at 4:45am and covered 29 miles, 65k steps, took 16 hours & who knows how many golf swings! The most important stat though is that they nudged over £4k for the Hospice. The funds will help pay for two Hospice at Home visits every weekend for a year. Phil’s Mum benefitted greatly from a brief stay in Ashgate Hospice during her illness, but the Hospice didn’t have the resources to provide the Hospice at Home service when she most needed it. These visits can make a tremendous difference to sufferers who remain at home, but are in need of the specialist care and advice that the Hospice staff provide. • Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted, they usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. • Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. • Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over, and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. • Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. • If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. • Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. • Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted, or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. • Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... • Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-totoe in black.
