Starting out as drone flying enthusiasts, the business grew from there. Friends asked for a few aerial images of their property, they made a promotional video for other friends and a business was formed. Take a look at their work at www.visualdroneworx.co.uk Next up, congratulations to Sandra Worrall from Newbold as winner of the Spot The Difference Competition featured in last month's edition. Thanks to Penk Insurance Ltd of Chatsworth Road, Sandra takes away a £25 prize to enjoy. This month we have two ticket giveaways, a family day ticket to Crich Tramway Village that will need to be used before they close for the season in November and a pair of tickets to see Boyzlife at Sheffield Foundry, courtesy of MP Promotions. Enter for a chance to see Keith Duffy of Boyzone and Brian McFadden of Westlife on October 25. See page 50 for details. We also have the regular crossword prize of £20 on page 78. In this edition we spend two nights in a hired campervan from Autoselect, talk to the team at Derbyshire Stroke Centre, meet the ladies from the Inner Wheel, review a short history of Brampton Brewery, get an update on a few events from the Peak District National Park Authority, and catch up with progress at Monkey Park plus all the usual news, what's on, classifieds and regular events. Please enjoy your read and I'll see you in the penultimate edition before Christmas! Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

f you’re not happy pitching a tent or you’ve not been in a campervan before - where do you start? Autoselect Campervan Hire may just be able to help.
In April last year Autoselect took delivery of a brand new VW T6 California Ocean, so not just any camper but the classic VW camper with all the connotations of freedom, love and harmony… but it’s not a tired old 60’s model, it’s the very latest top of the range model with all the comfort, power and reliability that today’s camper demands. So, if the image you have of the camper life-style is to be sat on the hard shoulder waiting to be recovered, you’ll be sadly disappointed! Hire charges start from £295 for a long weekend (2pm Friday to 10am Monday). When I was a young child, I used to make and paint plastic kits, Airfix models, remember them? One of my favourites was a VW split screen van, I painted it red, put a veneer floor in, lowered it and made various changes to make it look cool… and I’ve had a hankering for a camper ever since. Autoselect hire out for a fraction of the cost of owning your own and you can get that outdoor upmarket camping experience whenever you like, well, provided you book it early enough!
Rob Bartle, from Autoselect, enabled me to feel like a child again, when he offered to let me sample the van for a few nights. To say I was quite excited to pick up the van from Autoselect’s swish new home on Pottery Lane off Sheffield Road, is putting it lightly. I hired the T6 ocean for two nights in August and took it to Beech Croft Farm on the other side of the Peak District to see if the legendary campervan could live up to my expectations. I cycled down and was shown around the meticulously clean van, how to elevate the electric roof at the push of a button, how to set up the side awning, how to fold down the bed, swivel the driver and passenger chairs, set up the water, gas and electric hook up etc and was impressed by how easy everything seemed, even the rear cycle carrier for four bikes was a doddle to use. It wasn’t long before the van was on the drive at home with the kids testing out the roof bed! We packed our things and set off. On the road the VW drives superbly, with 140bhp on tap it’s strong enough to haul around the extra weight of the interior, your gear and four people. It’s no sports car though, the suspension is quite soft, and it rolls through the bends and keeps everyone comfortable.

Page 5
The two rear seats have Isofix so can take child seats and it was noticeably quieter than my Hyundai combi-van that I drive daily - you do have to make sure everything in the cupboards is well secured! When we arrived on site and pulled up to our pitch, our neighbours were openly admiring the shiny new camper, and admitted later when they came across for a chat that they’d been wondering ’what does he do for a living?’ The VW sleeps four people. Two sleep in a bed in the elavating roof with a wooden slatted base complete with a comfortable mattress, you access this through a sliding cover above the front seats. The other two sleep downstairs, the bed made up by simply sliding the two rear seats, flipping the headrests over and folding things flat to form a double bed, the night is shut out by window blinds that provide privacy and warmth. Once the bed was made up downstairs my son commented “that looks like a posh hotel!” not bad for a van with a bed I thought. If it’s a cold night the van is equipped with a dedicated heating system for use when the van is hooked up to the mains or it can run off the engine, so whatever the weather, you can stay warm and cosy. During the day with the roof lifted, the rear seats slid back, the bed pushed up into the roof space and two front seats rotated round you’ve got a comfortable space, in which to sit and relax. Inside, the van is fitted with what seem like hundreds of compartments in which to store stuff, a cupboard with a hanging rail to keep the Sunday best looking sharp, if you’re that way inclined. There is a two-burner hob, a small fridge/cool box and a sink so you can cook a meal, brew a cuppa and clean up the pots once done. Don’t get me wrong space is tight, you do need to be organised. We took a tent with us and pitched that close enough so that when the awning was rolled out it allowed us to get to the tent under cover if needed, not that we did, but the awning is excellent at keeping rain
Page 6
www.s40local.co.uk
out of the cab when the door is slid open. There is quite a large load space behind the seats so the van swallows things like tents, food boxes, chairs, tables, sleeping bags etc with ease. At night, once the bed is made up things can be easily stored beneath the bed. A rather neat touch is kept behind a zipped panel in the tailgate, unzip and you’ll find two chairs for use outside which can be coupled with the table that’s stored almost unnoticed in the inner panel of the side door. One thing in particular that struck me was the speed at which you can be set up. I reckon if you travelled with water on board you could have the kettle on and be sat relaxing within two minutes of arriving at your site. We all slept well in the van, the blinds do an excellent job of keeping out the early morning sun, something that many tent campers suffer from, even with the new blackout sections. We were lucky to have the heatwave still with us so breakfast all'aperto, (not ‘al fresco’ note – this expression usually refers to spending time in jail!) was enjoyed before packing up, dropping kit back home and returning the van to Autoselect. I felt a little sad to be returning the campervan. I drive a van daily and I could easily live with the T6 as my daily transport. It drives well, carries a family of four in comfort, is big enough for the loads I need but is small enough that it can slot into a busy supermarket car park with ease. The campervan makes an ideal choice for a couple wanting to travel and camp, moving frequently, opening up new options for a break. It makes a great family base for a camping holiday without the cost of owning and running one yourself or, if you are looking to buy, it's an opportunity to try it and live life as a ‘vdubber’.
Get in touch with Autoselect on 01246 205529 if you fancy hiring the campervan, from £295 for a long weekenbd. Also, don’t forget, Autoselect have a fantastic range of used cars, from family hatches to the world's most exotic supercars … and lots in between.

Brampton Brewery A short history of hops. Words: Jack Alexander Images: Brampton Brewery
A
t one time, Chesterfield had three breweries, making it the second largest brewing town in Derbyshire. It was all thanks to the fine quality of water which runs beneath the town, they say. That’s why The Brampton Brewery had wells bored directly below their brew house, and in its heyday owned 142 pubs in our area and was capable of producing more than two hundred thousand pints a week! “Many old documents refer to Chesterfield's fine ale,” says author and amateur historian John Hirst, having revised and reworked his popular booklet on the legendary local brewery. Over the last forty years, John's ongoing research has yielded enough information for no less than five self-published booklets on local brewing history. John has been able to expand upon much of the information contained within his original Brampton Brewery booklet, published in 2011, ensuring that it remains an essential guide for anyone intrigued by Chesterfield’s beer brewing heritage.
If there is one key piece of information which called for a revised edition, it is a document which challenges the date the brewery was established. A newspaper advert in 1852 declares, 'the brewery has officially started brewing', thirteen years later than previously believed.
“Much of the information came from the local library ... newspaper reports and Trade Directories. I have also seen Brampton documents that are kept in the brewing archives,“ John informs us. The history of the Brampton Brewery has a fair few twists and turns, and as a business has overcome many a challenge to be where it is today. From turn of the century legislation changes to wartime rationing, to battling the inferno which destroyed the original brew house, it becomes evident that the history of this much-loved brewery is about far more than providing refreshing beverages.
“Anyone who knows the story is reluctant to listen to me trying to change it! That's why I've put so much time in to making sure it's correct,” says John.
To commemorate one hundred years since the end of the First World War, there is an added chapter detailing the six brewery employees who lost their lives during the conflict. The Brampton Brewery story is intertwined with that of Chesterfield, of Derbyshire and beyond, and John's revised booklet does a great job of showcasing this. Page 20
So, whether you’re a real ale aficionado, interested in local history, or simply a curious consumer of Brampton Brewery's finest, John's history of the Brampton Brewery is a perfect addition to your book collectoin. The Brampton Brewery: The Story of the Original Brewery Co Ltd booklet is available to purchase at the Brampton Brewery Beer Cellar, Chesterfield Museum and Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre, priced at £4.

Specialist Stroke Services
A local charity, unique to the area providing a fantastic service. Words:Paul Chapman Images: Specialist Stroke Services FB
S
uffering a stroke is life changing, but for people in Chesterfield a service set up by two dedicated women provides a safe, supportive environment tailored specifically to the needs of stroke survivors and their carers, the like of which is not found anywhere else in the country. Specialist Stroke Services (SSS) is a registered charity set up by Julie Wheelhouse and Debbie Newton in 2001. Both were working in stroke care but realised different and longer term support was needed than was on offer. I was invited along by Ian Gerrard and went along to see the facilities and meet some of the survivors and their carers at the Derbyshire Stroke Centre, at Holmewood Business Park. I was blown away by what they have achieved and the support they offer. A stroke is momentary interruption in supply of blood to the brain in the form of a blood clot or a bleed, the worse case scenario is death. Should people survive the resulting damage to the brain can cause long term effects that vary dramatically from patient to patient. Julie explained “We started up in 2001 in a room at the Victoria Club on Whittington Moor. Debbie and I had seen first hand the problems people were facing. In some cases people who could no longer work needed to fill out forms to access benefits, but the result of the stroke made that difficult. Many people struggle to make the necessary decisions and with language problems can't just call someone up and ask for help. “Some survivors are impacted by aphasia, a condition that impairs language, affecting the ability to produce and understand speech, or the ability to read or write. Page 24
You might know you want to say ‘the sofa is green’, but you can’t get the words out. And when you do get the words out, the words you’ve said aren’t right. “It takes control away from the individual and causes many problems. This is exacerbated because the disability is not visible. If someone is sitting in a wheelchair or has physical signs then others know to make allowances and offer support, but that just isn’t the case with injuries and damage to the brain.” “We have our own stroke nurse who is mindful of the problems stroke survivors face. If people have language or cognitive problems, how do you make an appointment with the doctor?” explains Julie. “If faced with a decision you might shy away from it, stroke sufferers need careful handling as tempers and feelings can flare and range dramatically. Our nurses know this and allow for it in the way they care.” “Of course, the damage caused by a stroke can also be physical with loss of movement and difficulties operating limbs. The centre has a fully equipped gym where the equipment is power assisted, this enables operation of both limbs, the good side is exercised in the traditional way whilst the affected side is able to move in unison, aided by the machine, allowing for passive movements. “We’ve had some fantastic results in the gym, a neurophysio comes in three times a week and works with service users. We’ve seen some people stand, walk and exercise after being told they’ll never walk again” Julie enthuses.

Page 25
Community The centre offers holistic support focusing on mental wellbeing, alongside the physical symptoms of both the stroke survivor and their carers - including mood swings.
This was almost five years ago and the centre is now full of life and activity.
The service is clearly very important for the people who go. The support from the staff is fantastic and people love coming. There are no inhibitions and people can feel comfortable here, positivity is the buzzword ... not everything can be fixed, but the centre gives people the space and time to try and most importantly, the support doesn’t come to an end.
Some service users are entitled to a Direct Payment which is a source of funding that many survivors and carers are unaware of “Direct Payments became available in 2001 and it’s flexible so people can choose how they access care support. In some instances, this can be used to fund daycare services such as time at the centre. People can use this money to access our services, £35 will provide support for the day” says Julie.
The centre aims to help people always improve, for example, if they can’t speak and it won’t come back, there are ways the centre can help with confidence and finding other ways in which people can communicate. Diane (top right), one of the service users at the centre was previously a farmer, and the centre have bought her a bee hive (which had to be positioned off site), which she now keeps and goes back to sell the resultant honey with funds to the centre. They have a belly dancing class, visits from an aromatherapist, thai chi and Zumba classes, art therapy, something different happening most days groups of classes for people who share many of the same difficulties. The team are seeing new referrals every week and the need continues to expand. The service initially started small with Julie and Debbie requesting a day a week release from their jobs to set up a service within a community room at North Wingfield. They expanded the service, eventually leaving their jobs to set up the Specialist Stroke Services as a charity, full-time, as the numbers kept growing. Julie remembers. “In the early days we had to beg people to loan us rooms, meeting three or four days a week, before we secured a small lottery grant. We wanted to make the jump from a support service to a place with a permanent home.” explained Julie. “We’ve had other grant funding and support from local organisations e.g. the Inner Wheel, Chesterfield Male Voice Choir, the Rotary. All donations are ploughed back into equipment etc.
FUNDING:
What’s amazing about what they do is that it’s unique to us here in Chesterfield. Nothing like this exists elsewhere in the UK! Ian Gerrard, Publicity secretary for the Chesterfield Male Voice Choir (CMVC) became involved after the CMVC staged a fund-raising concert for the centre as guests of the Whittington Moor Methodist Church. Mike Spriggs, Chairman of CMVC, and treasurer of the choir, Bill Snook, came and with Ian to present the cheque. "I was so impressed by what the centre was acheiving I had to volunteer my services to help out". You can see what goes on at Facebook: Specialist Stroke Services and keep an eye out for the Chesterfield Male Voice Choir - singing comes from the automatic speech part of the brain and often isn’t affected by aphasia so is a welcome relief to sufferers, Ian is working with Mike Spriggs to form a singing group for patients, so please support the choir by attending a concert if you can. In 2013, the service secured the offices at Holmewood Business Park. “Each day I’d drive past the offices thinking what a great location it would be. One office had remained empty since it was built so we spoke to Derbyshire County Council (DCC). They told us to put a business case together, so we did. We showed how, by creating the space, we could help reduce the costs of care, we could get people mobile, stop people falling, reduce depression amongst survivors, through these changes we could reduce the costs that the council have to bear for hospitals and other agencies.” “We were absolutely thrilled when DCC said yes! We signed a contract and moved into the building, a blank canvas on which to work.” Page 26

Chris's View: Chris (below) suffered his stroke seven years ago, his mobility and speech were limited for at least 18 months, he suffered double vision and still does. He has to remember to swallow if he doesn't he chokes. He knows which words he needs to use but can not always find them. He uses a drawer system in his mind and has to work really hard to find the words he requires, once he achieves that he tries to lock the word back in the right place. It took him over two years to develop a decent vocabulary. Things we take for granted he and others have to work really hard at eg: posture for instance, they have to remember to hold themselves upright. He describes his condition as like this, "remember the Thunderbird puppets?" he asked. "Bobbing around on their strings being controlled from above, imagine cutting those strings. Everything changes. Suffering a stroke is a bit like that, a puppet with no strings, always having to compensate for no strings." Chris was also very keen to mention the strain placed upon carers. It is sometimes worse for the carer than the stroke victim. He now visits the centre regularly, is a trustee and helps out in the kitchen.

WELCOME T O St. John's New Vicar Rev Capt. Nick Green CA he and Andrea opened a drop-in Listening centre on the shopping mall, bought, and with a small team of helpers, refurbished, resprayed, and equipped another double decker bus, and used it as a mobile outreach centre around Middlesbrough.
Nick is a former insurance broker from Bolton, Lancs. He and Andrea have been married for nearly 30 years and have three grown up children. Nick has a powerful conversion story of his own and is driven to share with others the hope that changed his life. In 1998 Nick joined Church Army (www. churcharmy.org) and moved the family to Sheffield to train at the Church Army college. His first post was with the Church Army Bus Project, which used a converted 1966 double decker bus as a platform for outreach in the market towns of North Yorkshire. Following on from that Nick led an ecumenical project with various churches of different denominations on the largest private housing estate in Europe in Stockton on Tees, creating new ways of doing church.
Following that he led St Margaret’s Church, Brookfield, in Middlesbrough, in reaching out into the community. In 2013 he was appointed Rector of St Mary’s Church Dunblane, where he enjoyed leading the church into a new season of missional development and growth.
Nick was ordained at York Minster in 2008 and appointed Pioneer Minister in Middlesbrough, again without a church building, doing lots of innovative and exciting things out in the community of Coulby Newham. Among other things
Nick’s view on his new priorities are clear... My role and passion is to encourage people to believe and trust in Jesus and learn to really worship God through Him. We want to create a church that is growing, because it powerfully embodies God’s life-giving love. It’s going to be an exciting adventure for the whole family of St John’s. Rev Nick Green CA Page 32

ou’ve probably heard of the Rotary but may not have heard of the Inner Wheel. It was founded in 1924 at a time when women weren't able to join the male only Rotary and established originally for the women and daughters of Rotarians. Next year the Chesterfield branch of the Inner Wheel celebrates its 70th Charter (birthday) year, we meet up with Adrienne Handley and Joan Wadd, Inner Wheel members to find out what it’s all about. “The organisation is non-religious and non-political” says Joan. “We’re international, with 103 member countries and 109,000 members wordwide. Today, women are equally able to join the Rotary but the International Inner Wheel continues promoting objectives of true friendship, encouraging the ideals of personal service (the provision of services as opposed to goods), and fostering international understanding. “We’re a friendly organisation who meet, raise money for local and international charities, including, the Rotary and the National Police Aid Convoy (a Mansfield based charity who deliver humanitarian aid all over the world).” “The Inner Wheel strive to support any worldwide disaster that occurs through fundraising activities.” Adrienne joined in 2011 and Joan has been a member since 1996, both are retired teachers, but the membership is made up of a wide cross section of backgrounds and careers. So why do they get involved? Joan finished full time employment and her husband was in the Rotary so joined up and got involved. She describes it as a happy time, interesting, enjoyable, she wouldn’t want to leave and is still actively involved. Joan is particularly looking forward to attending the National conference in Cardiff next year. Adrienne, again finished work and had a friend who was a member and came along. “People imagine it’s stuffy or they simply don’t understand what we do, they think it's simply old ladies drinking tea, but we’re not like that at all.” “I like to think we do a bit of good for local organisations, in a fun way, getting together for friendship and enjoying ourselves along the way.”
Get Togethers “We meet at lunch so this does restrict membership to some extent” explains Adrienne. “We’d like to change this, so we can attract new members. We do understand that this can make it difficult for working women to attend but members are not required to attend every meeting and we are keen to be flexible.” Meetings take many forms, a meal and speaker, a trip out, a cream tea and a cake, more formal meetings such as the AGM, or the traditional Christmas meal with all the entertainment and mayhem that ensues.
Adrienne. “The 2018 theme is Derbyshire so all the speakers are Derbyshire based or the talks are about Derbyshire based organisations or people.” “I will be talking about famous women of Derbyshire” says Joan. “Each member chooses a lady and makes a presentation about them and what they do etc. It’s a fun way to highlight the women of the area and what they did for us, putting Derbyshire on the map.” The remaining programme for 2018/19 features, in September, a visit by the District Chair, in October a talk on 100 years since the end of WWI, November sees a talk about Arabella Stuart of Hardwick Hall and future meetings include an International theme, Well Dressing where the ladies are hoping to make their own Inner Wheel Round and Hulley’s Buses… which will hopefully include a tour of Derbyshire and it wouldn’t be right not to stop for a cream tea! In addition to the programme, many informal meet ups take place between members, cinema trips, local outings etc. For instance, on 26 Oct there will be a group from the Inner Wheel attending 'So Long Farewell', the WWI production at Chesterfield Library, they’ll pick up the older ladies, make sure they get there and back safely and can attend.
Fund Raising Typically, the group raise over £3000 a year. This significant chunk of money goes to support local charities and the projects they are involved in. Fundraising activities this year have include knitted poppies for the British Legion which they will be selling. They attend a local Christmas fair, they are hoping to have a stall in a Christmas market, a stall at District meeting and there is the Rotary Santa Sleigh which they are involved in. Coffee mornings, raffles, a stall at Eckington car show etc all to raise funds for Ashgate Hospicecare, Nenna Kind plus Sheffield Teenage Cancer Care Trust members can apply to support any local charity. In addition, they pack and collect items for the National Police Aid Convoy, Shoe boxes etc and pass on donations to charities that come and speak. Modern Kitchen? Or Traditional Kitchen? Words: Paul Chapman Images: Paul Chapman & 1st Class 1st Class Kitchens are gearing up for the Christmas rush and I popped into catch up with the owners, Dave and Helen Oxley to see what’s new. From their showroom on Derby Road it’s clear that 1st Class can cater for the needs of even the most choosey of customers. The displays feature a range from highly contemporary (shown right) to more traditional and there is also a demonstration range of the latest appliances installed and working. “We like to ensure we have a mixture of styles in the showroom” explains Helen. “It’s just a very small selection of the finishes and designs we have access to but it gives a good feel for what we can do.” The Burbidge ‘Otto’ kitchen as shown in the advert opposite is a popular slab door range available in a wide range of different finishes and colours. Versatile, fitted either in a true handle-less fashion using an ingenious integrated handle rail fitted into the cabinetry behind the door or with standard or top fitting handles. In contrast to the sleek contemporary look of the ‘Otto’ the ‘Langton’ (shown below) has a more traditional look but in the style of the classic English shaker kitchen combined with some well-considered features that today’s living demands. A stylish inframe kitchen, beading round the door and drawer fronts, add butt hinges for extra impact and painted in one of 25 colours for you to mix and match and create colour contrasts, plus the option to have bespoke door sizes and colours should you wish.
“We have a number of customers recently where we have designed a kitchen solution by combining contemporary and traditional styles to great effect. Real wood kitchens but with a completely contemporary feel” says Helen. “We are keen to see customers who want the latest styles, but we are equally at home designing in the classic farmhouse style. Couple the design with the latest in appliances and any kitchen will feel cutting edge. We have a great range of appliances from Bosch with Home Smart Connect. Going to be late home? Delay the time the oven comes on from the app on your phone.” “These latest technologies use PerfectBake and PerectRoast to make sure your dish is cooked perfectly every time.”
Christmas Orders It might be almost four months to Christmas but if you are in the market for a new kitchen and would like to see it cook the perfect Christmas dinner you’ll need to be quick. Green. In more ways than just colour. Choir’s old uniform going to a good cause. Words & Image: Ian Gerrard
As part of its modernisation programme – both in terms of its music repertoire and appearance - Chesterfield Male Voice Choir has recently replaced its traditional uniform of green jackets, green ties and white shirts with a smart ensemble of black jackets, trousers and shirts with gold ties. Having done so, the question then arose as to what to do with the green jackets. An offer to donate them to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance for either selling in their shops or to clients overseas was accepted enthusiastically. The photo shows CMVC’s Secretary David Brocklehurst (in the new uniform) with staff ‘receiving’ the green jackets outside DLRAA’s Head Office.

Here is one story…Grace came to Kip with her mum towards the end of Reception. Her first year at school had been a tricky one and her confidence was at an all-time low. Mum and Dad had done their best but life was full-on with new twins in the house and any attempts to help had ended in tears, literally. Sad tissues! Can you believe that after a year in Reception, Grace knew only 10 out of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and she was shaky on some of those so her answers were hit and miss. She had never made the connection between letters and sounds, so reading hadn’t got started in any meaningful way. ‘Phonics’ as a topic just made her quake in her boots. She was starting her reading journey from nowhere! So how did Jo turn ‘sad tissues’ into ‘happy tissues’ and start Grace’s reading journey? She made a plan which included a focus on individual letters and their sounds, reading, spelling and blends (sounds made using more than one letter). She made a number of flashcards of simple words which, when put together made a sentence. They played lots of rounds of Slap (Jo calling out words and Grace hitting the word with a fly swat) and gradually Grace was able to not only read words herself, but call them out for Jo to slap, which confirmed that she was actually reading them and not just remembering them. This method is called ‘look and say’ and is an alternative to the phonics method of the school. By doing it this
way Grace was able to focus on the shape of simple words such as ‘the’ rather than seeing a jumble of letters and getting into a panic. The final test came when Grace was able to put the cards in the correct order to complete the sentence. By increasing the number of flashcards and the complexity of the words Grace moved onwards and upwards. Her confidence increased massively in only a few weeks to the point where she could move on to the Kip reading programme which uses computer games and matching booklets. She was off! One school term later… Grace could read simple stories, write simple sentences and had an amazing level of self-confidence on her reading journey. At the end of one session Grace was able to read a short story to her mum. There were tears but this time they were mum’s! The relief was palpable. Happy tissues! Being a Kip tutor has many rewards, seeing the children improve is just one of them; to see parents’ stress and anxiety replaced with pride and joy is a huge reward too. More happy tissues! Book your ‘happy tissue’ moment and start your child’s reading journey! Call Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment!

M
ichelle Woodall is the recently appointed Operational Manager at community hub, Monkey Park, so I caught up with her to see how things are progressing since Monkey Park opened its doors over two years ago. The aspirations of Monkey Park are to ‘engage the local community and build a better Brampton’. I asked if it’s delivering this “We like to think of Monkey Park as a living room on the street, a place to make connections, to get support, to seek help through agencies, to improve health and wellbeing both physical and mental … a place to bring social action together in ways that help and improve the area” explains Michelle. “I think we are delivering on the original aspiration. On the doorstep we have helped deliver a new path in the park, improved the path near to Brampton school and have brought live performance to the park by visiting performers The Handlebards, who have performed twice now. “We opened the door two and half years ago, tailoring services offered to align with the local community.” “Since starting I’ve found it welcoming, supportive and interesting, it’s nice to be part of the local community, and welcoming to families.” The original group of social entrepreneurs that established as a directorship has changed over time, but two people, Simon and Christine Redding have stayed with the project. Originally, they provided some
Page 48
investment and secured funding from various sources that support community projects. The idea of the community hub was formed. A place for the community to go, to meet, to eat and to work. The original offer consisted of cafe area with bakery, a cycle workshop and a shared workspace available for people to us rather than working at home with no interaction. Today the project is two years on and although the offering has changed, “it’s been tailored to meet the demands of the community” says Michelle. “The cycle workshop is still there, open Saturdays for repair and to accept donations, the bakery has gone but the cafe is still a popular meeting place, the co-workspace is open daily, and the hub brings together many local groups, clubs and societies under their roof.”
WORK: The co-workspace is upstairs and provides an open area used by several local businesses and people, from students looking for a quiet space to study to community organisations using the meeting space. “Many people just don’t know it’s there” says Michelle. “Do you sit in a coffee shop and use your lap top? Why not take membership and use our space, tea and coffee is free upstairs and downstairs you have a community café at your disposal.” The space can be used by becoming a member and purchasing a single day pass, you can take full advantage and drop in daily or anything in between.
www.s40local.co.uk
If you have a bike in the shed you don't want, please consider donating it to Monkey Park, they will refurbish and recycle the bike providing affordable transport for someone local. The work is supported by a great group of volunteers, youngsters who come and get involved in support and learn from the experience.
EAT:
Prices start from £6.50 for a day pass and the coworkspace is open from 8am to 6pm. The space offers flexibility and is used by likeminded people who may not require a dedicated office but do want the social interaction. “There is also the fact that by renting and using the space you’re giving something back and helping sustain a community project” enthuses Michelle. “We’ve recently introduced three zones to help control work flow, quiet, interactive and social zones. The quiet zone lets you work undisturbed, through to social where people will talk and share ideas and thoughts” outlines Michelle. “People describe the difference to working from a table at home” explains Michelle. “They use the phrase 'coming to work', as they step through the door they feel like they are here to work, productivity increases. It’s also an ideal place in which to study, home is often a busy and noisy place and if you need to escape, our co-workspace is a great place to find the headspace needed. “Plus you don’t have to pay for it all the time. Need a day a week, just call in and pay for a day pass.” I do know what Michelle means, I often used to feel isolated when working at home, I now share a workspace and have found it extremely beneficial for my mental wellbeing. You can also use Monkey Park as a postal address for a business, so you don’t have to use your home address. Members have access to free photo-copying, wifi, white boards for creative sessions etc and can help support your new or established business in many ways. In addition, there is an onsite business support service available for new start-ups, this is free of charge and provided by a local business advisor who has helped many new businesses get off the ground.
CYCLE:
“The café is a light, airy place where you can meet, eat and treat yourself. Products are made on the premises with good quality ethically sauced ingredients. Food is priced to ensure everyone can afford to pop in, and we ensure a wide selection plus vegan and allergies are catered for” says Michelle. The café isn’t just about the food though, it’s a community space where people meet and socialise, plus the space can be rented out for private hire. Activities that take place include: • Stay and play on Wed morning for under 5 year olds. • Saturday afternoon children’s activities with Lego, arts and board games. • Holiday clubs throughout the school holidays. • Silver social, for anyone over 50 who wants to meet up and come together. • Dora local mental health cafe - aimed at providing support and a listning ear to anyone who needs help with mental wellbeing. • Careers community, Stand up to racism group, Gamers Network, Ashgate hospice bereavement café, Autism Acceptance group and Tech Club. • A Baking Club meet on Thu evening - much of the produce sold within the shop to the community. All details of events are available at www.monkeypark. org, FB: Chesterfield Monkey Park or contact Michelle directly via manager@monkeypark.org.uk. “We have time slots still available so if your club or group want to meet up just get in touch, our rooms can be hired at very reasonable rates” Michelle adds. There is also a Maker’s Corner, a small range of items and gifts made locally and sold through Monkey Park. If you want to get involved they are always looking for people who can help; planning events, marketing, helping in the cycle workshop, running kid’s activities, volunteer in the café etc and many of the volunteering opportunities have led to paid employment. Monkey Park 128a Chester Street, Brampton Chesterield S40 1DN
The bike workshop is open Saturdays only from 9am to 3pm. They offer cycle repairs and have a number of refurbished bikes for sale. At Monkey Park they use bikes for local transport and welcome anyone with a bike. Please Mention S40 Local

Chatsworth Road Medical Centre Patient Group Update
Monkey Park: UK Small Biz 100
Members undertook a visit to the Derbyshire Stroke Centre (as featured earlier in this edition) PPG members were shown the excellent facilities helping stroke patients recover after discharge from hospital. Carers can also attend the centre on Mondays and benefit from talking to other people about coping strategies over a cup of tea. A PPG member suffered a stroke three years ago and his condition has improved greatly since attending this inspirational Centre. The PPG has produced a guide on strokes and ways of accessing help during recovery. The Practice has now created a slip available on reception to give to patients to explain and encourage the use of the Electronic Systems for ordering prescriptions from Chatsworth Road Peak Pharmacy. The PPG is also currently looking at Mental Health and Wellbeing with the aim of producing information and support for patients about various mental health illnesses. The Group is keen to welcome new members so if patients are interested in joining the PPG please come along. For info please ask at the Medical Centre Reception or see chatsworthroadmedicalcentre.nhs.uk
Monkey Park has been named as one of the UK’s top ‘Small Biz 100’ by Small Business Saturday. Monkey Park on Chester Street has been selected as a trailblazer in the official countdown to Small Business Saturday, which takes place across the UK on 1 December 2018. Monkey Park’s achievements and contribution to the local community were celebrated and spotlighted earlier this month as part of the campaign’s mission to celebrate small business success, and encourage the nation to 'shop local' and support British small businesses. The 2018 Small Biz 100 are drawn from every corner of the UK and reflect the vibrancy of the UK’s 5.5 million small businesses. Kevin Walker, Director of Monkey Park CIC said: “We are extremely thrilled to be announced as one of the ‘Small Biz 100’ for 2018. Monkey Park is a not for profit organisation whose purpose is to improve the local community by bringing people together & supporting their efforts to change the area. We employ local people and buy our teas, coffees and other ingredients locally to make sure we are enhancing the local economy. We have created six part time jobs and all profits go back into the business or into community projects. We fully support Small Business Saturday’s mission to encourage more people to shop locally and support ventures such as ours”. In its sixth year Small Business Saturday is the UK's most successful small business campaign, which last year saw an estimated £748m spent with small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday also benefits from the backing of leading business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses and Enterprise Nation. The campaign is also supported by Amazon, Indeed, Royal Mail, Square, Vistaprint and Xerox. Press release 28 Aug 2018.
Sudden Loss Support Group In this edition we talked to staff, patients and carers at the Derbyshire Stroke Centre. In additon to the support drop-in they offer stroke patients there is also a drop in group that offers support for those who have lost a child suddenly. The sessions take place on the first Monday of the month between 4 and 6pm or you can call to arrange to meet between these times. Please see the flyer on the left for contact details on meetings and contact numbers.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted. Garden Tips
Autumn Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go. When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit: blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids some shaping while they are dormant. Remember that many of these fruit on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries & blackcurrants. When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out. Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic, and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few). It is time to think about ordering new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm. Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seed-heads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year. Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.
