Hi and welcome to November's S40 Local.
Due to personal reasons the last couple of editions of S40 Local have been hard work. Being self employed is all good until something kicks things out of line, then it’s difficult to meet deadlines and keep going. Despite a tricky month, you have the edition in your hands, and I've made it through. But you know what? After almost ten years I wouldn’t change a thing. I love being my own boss, flexing work around life, not life around work, and now this one is done, I’m off out on my bike!

TO ADVERTISE
The next edition, which I'll be starting soon, will be the last before Christmas. In a world that seems to be getting madder by the minute, I plan to use the next edition to promote ways that we can support the local economy with Christmas present buying, treats, food, drinks and entertainment - it would be great if we could all do our bit. This month's gift guide would be a good place to start.
Size
We mention the importance of the local economy on the gift guide page, referring to a video, offer your phone or tablet’s camera to quick code shown above and the link will take you to a video. This two and half minute film says it all really.

Christmas
Supporting independents this Christmas Words: Paul Chapman
Christmas is on the horizon and with it a shopping list of gifts for family and friends. To fulfil your present buying objectives you could go online and await delivery to your door. Alternatively, you could spend your money locally this Christmas at a small independent business. There's a chance that the business owner or maker will take your money and spend it in another community shop or cafe... and then the next business owner will do the same thing, keeping the money in Chesterfield and benefiting our local economy. Or yes, you could spend it in a chain store and some shareholder in London or elsewhere will add the amount to their bottom line and it has no impact on our community's economy. I know shopping local takes more time and effort but if you need convincing or you'd like to see how this works, check out 'Tale of a Tenner' on YouTube, it's inspiring - and not just because of the cyclists! Here are a few ideas from advertisers in this edition, please give them and other local businesses your support this year... and if you wanted to make my Christmas, tell them S40 Local sent you! Pudding Pie Hill
The Spring
The local residents of Wigley and Wadshelf named the hill on which the pub stands as Pudding Pie Hill as the slake lime burnt on the fields to aid plant growth in historic times gave the hill the appearance of a giant steamed pudding!
The building sits on a natural spring which has recently been capped with a well, water is tapped from this and used to supply the Inn. It also makes a great place to make a wish on your wedding day!

Chesterfield Investment Summit Words: Paul Chapman Images: Destination Chesterfield
It's early on a Wednesday morning and I’m at Casa Hotel with a couple of hundred keen investors, business owners and Chesterfield Champions to hear what some of the shapers and leaders of our area have in store for Chesterfield in the coming years. James Berresford
James Berresford Derbyshire Culture, Heritage Arts & Tourism Board James Berresford is Chair of Derbyshire Culture, Heritage Arts and Tourism Board. Chesterfield born and bred, it's his job to make the most of the visiting tourists that come to Derbyshire each year, to make the best of what we have to offer, “a world class destination offering world class products.” The Trends
• The UK is number eight in the top ten list of tourist destinations across the world. • The tourism sector supports 28,000 jobs across Derbyshire.
• Tourists in Derbyshire spend £2.15b PA, a growth of 1.3% over last year - over half spent by day visitors. “Our aspiration is to get more people to stay in the area” he explains. “People want a good time, just look at the selfies on social media which all say ‘I’m having a better time than you.’ People don’t want to stay in poor quality accommodation, they want an authentic experience with meaning, in a world where we don’t know what’s true and fake anymore.
“The demographic is changing, we're getting older and are no longer prepared to accept a sedentary lifestyle, people are looking for experiences that stimulate and challenge. “Leisure patterns and the family unit is changing, and people want something different. Technology plays a huge part in life, we’ve seen a 100% growth in bookings online, originating from tablets and mobiles, many never visit a travel agent, how they choose a destination has changed and Trip Advisor can very quickly tell us what a place is really like. “People are Value Seeking, new habits form and people are always looking for a ‘bit of a deal’. What can I get? Page 22
“People take more short breaks, ‘holiday snacking’ as it’s known, the typical two-week summer holiday is being replaced with 7 to 10 days for the main break supported by many weekends and short breaks, and it’s all very last minute, driven by the weather ... will it be dry this weekend? Yes, OK pack the bags, let’s go.” World Class Assets
I found James's talk uplifting, we already have a number of world class assets in the area; The Peak District National Park, jam packed with hundreds of beautiful destinations, The ‘Crooked’ Spire of St Mary’s & All Saints, Chatsworth House, Casa Hotel, numerous heritage sites. He talked about how these need to link together, how an experience must flow between them, how we need to make access and travel easy, how we need to embrace sustainability and how all businesses that could benefit from the tourist £ need to behave, no matter how large or small. He finished with a couple of personal experiences. When working in London, each day he would buy a coffee from Pret A Manger where they are always happy and polite. One day he was met with rude staff and left thinking ‘this isn’t on’ so he tweeted about it. Within minutes they’re back to him to find out what’s wrong and by the end of the day he’s been provided with a voucher, his poor experience transformed to a positive. An example of how hospitality and service skills need to be focused. His last point raised a laugh. One job was marketing Sherwood Forest, he’d heard how taxi drivers can be less than positive about the area so decided to test this out. Posing as a tourist he took a taxi ride asking the driver about the area, the driver was extremely positive, waxing lyrical about the area, even giving the square mile size of the forest. The driver finished stating, ‘the problem, is with the people who promote the area, they’re crap!’ What a wake-up call to the task ahead.

Huw Bowen Chief Exec Chesterfield Borough Council Huw Bowen makes a regular apperance at these events to provide an overview of progress in and around town. He’s passionate about town but is in a difficult position, tasked with delivering all the services we want, with an ever-decreasing budget. Huw explained that although visitor numbers and the money they spend is increasing, the number of people staying is low and needs a boost. He outlined how important events are for bringing people into the area; youth football, Custom Solar cricket tournament, the Redbrik half marathon, the OVO Women’s Tour of Britain, and the various markets; food, motor and 1940s, all help. Town Centre
Huw also expressed how impressed he is with the investment being made by Chesterfield’s young people - Bottle & Thyme, The Crafty Dog, Sorbo Lounge, the new businesses along Stephenson’s place, driven by young entrepreneurs. Many of the new businesses were covered in our May edition (see s40local.co.uk/previous-editions/). Council lead developments will see a significant change to the look and feel of our town. The new Saltergate car park will provide 530 spaces, more than the combined space previously in use at the car park and the Holywell cross site (Donut). The car park will provide wider parking bays, 32 disabled spaces, 15 parent and child spaces and will include automated roller shutters at vehicular entrances and exits, and access control via paper tickets at the pedestrian entrance and 24 hour CCTV coverage.
A new innovation hub will be built on the old site of the Holywell Cross car park, the entire Northern Gateway scheme bringing over 500 new jobs. The Chesterfield Waterside is still planned to be on site in 2019, changing the skyline with contemporary 11 storey apartment blocks.
The old North East Derbyshire County Council offices on Saltergate have been purchased by McCarthy Stone offering 61 town centre style retirement apartments on the edge of the glorious Peak District. Out of Town
The HS2 development brings with it plans for a new Staveley link road (£22m of the £50 million required has already been secured). This will feed a new Garden Village of 1500 homes; school and retail planned over the next 15 years before the first trains arrive in 2033. This is just one part of the plans that will hopefully see 5000 new homes built in various schemes delivered by 2033. Please Mention S40 Local

Sitting Comfortably?
Chatsworth Chiropractors offer some advice on how to get moving and prevent problems. Words: Lyn Bryce (Chatsworth Chiro)
BackCare Awareness Week was 8 to 12 October and Chatsworth Chiropractors offers us some simple, effective advice for preventing back or neck pain as new research reveals more people are experiencing these pains more frequently. Consumer research, from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), shows an increase from 34% to 45% of local people experiencing back and neck pain each week over the last 5 years. The most common triggers for back and neck pain, which affects 80% of people have also changed. More people reported that sitting still for long periods of time is contributing to their back pain increasing from 31% in 2013 to 45% in 2018. This is despite regular movement and exercise presenting a simple way for offsetting these triggers.
Furthermore, the number of people pointing to their job as the cause of their discomfort has risen and now affects almost a fifth of the population.
The most commonly cited trigger for back and neck pain remains lifting and carrying heavy items, for the fifth year in a row. Lyn Bryce from Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic and member of the BCA comments on the findings: “I think many of us will agree that the increasing numbers of people experiencing back or neck pain each week is concerning, especially given how simple it can be to protect ourselves from some of the most common triggers.
“Our lifestyles are becoming increasingly sedentary both at home and at work - with many of us spending more time sitting than ever before, contributing to people in the region experiencing pain more frequently. For the 45% of adults who are experiencing back or neck pain on a weekly basis, I would urge you to consider incorporating more exercise and general movement into your routine where you can to help combat the effects of sitting still.”
Lyn Bryce and Kirsten MacGregor (from Chatsworth Chiroprators) provide their five top tips to get people moving and to prevent back or neck pain. Take a break: When sitting for long periods of time, whether you’re at work, driving or catching up on box sets, ensure you stand up and move around every 30 minutes. Simple activities such as stretching and shoulder shrugging can also help Page 28
to keep your body moving when you’re sitting for longer periods of time
Stay active: Physical activity can be beneficial for managing back pain, as a stronger body can cope better with the demands you make of it, however it’s important that if this is of a moderate to high intensity that you warm up and down properly to get your body ready to move! If a previous injury is causing you pain, adapt your exercise or seek some advice. Activities such as swimming, walking or yoga can be less demanding on your body while keeping you mobile! Work in comfort: When at work, make sure your desk is set up to support a comfortable position. This is different for everyone so if you don’t feel comfortable in your current set up, try altering the height of your chair or screen.
Carry with care: While maintaining a strong body can help to prevent injuries, lifting and carrying in a safe way can help to prevent the leading cause of back and neck pain. Just as an athlete has to train to lift heavier weights, we should all only attempt to lift objects that we are able to without too much strain. If an item is particularly heavy then try to make use of available equipment which can help to take the load off your back, or reduce the load to smaller more manageable chunks. Straighten Up!: The BCA has created a programme of 3-minute exercises, Straighten Up UK, which can be slotted in to your daily schedule to help prevent back pain by promoting movement, balance, strength and flexibility in the spine
The BCA recommends that, if you are experiencing pain for more than a few days you should seek professional help to get moving again without pain. If you're experiencing problems call Lyn and the team on 01246 567773.
NEW SATURDAY MORNING HOURS
Due to popular demand Michelle and Lyn will be taking appointmemts on Saturday mornings on 10 November and 8 December. Continuing into the new year on roughly 2nd Saturday of the month.

Hello Winter! Polar Windows update us on a few new products to keep winter at bay. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Polar Windows
The design is elegant, simple and is found on many traditional properties but usually in wood. Polar’s new range features the very latest thermal properties, are extremely secure and unlike wood, won’t need maintaining, painting and staining every couple of years. The range of shades and textures is vast and includes soft subtle shades, delicate creams and greens, striking greys and a host of timber effects. Call down to the showroom in Hasland to check out the finishes available. The range offers a traditional look to any property but with all the benefits of the latest modern manufacturing standards, something old, something new perhaps?
Roofing Systems
“Popular at the moment are warm roof systems” says Rachel, “we have various roofing systems that replace glass on conservatories.
P
olar Windows are rapidly approaching their 30th anniversary and working from their base in Hasland, they are extremely proud of this fact together with the levels of customer feedback they achieve as a Which Trusted Trader.
Polar aren’t just about windows though. Customers can choose from a wide range of doors and windows, plus composite doors, conservatories, patio doors, roofing systems, rubber roofs, soffits and fascias, and single storey extensions, to mention just a few of their products… and any job benefits from a one-stop-service, including surveying, design, electrics, plumbing, plastering, flooring and heating. This breadth of experience brings knowledge and they have probably come across every problem a job can throw at them. Rachel Pickup (responsible for sales and marketing at Polar) points out “this confidence means we often love to take on jobs that other companies walk away from, if it’s not straightforward we can help. This is helped by the large contracts we have with local organisations, this knowledge passes down through the retail side of the business.”
Flush Casement Windows Polar manufacture their own products and their new range of flush casement windows is selling well. A casement window is simply a window held on hinges in a frame, the vast majority of which open outwards. A flush casement window is one where the window sits flush with the frame when closed, rather than standing proud on the outside. Page 30

These light weight tile effect roofs replace the polycarbonate or glass roof and vastly outperform glass. Many conservatories are either too hot in the summer or two cold in the winter, these new roofing systems alleviate this problem and create a room that is usable all year round.”
“We’re always on the look out for new products that compliment what we do” says Rachel. “The latest addition is a range of garden rooms, a fab way to add a new office, gym, workshop, play room of whatever use you choose, and we can take care of the entire job from ideas and planning to handing over the keys to your new space.”
If you’re in the market for any of Polar’s products, give them a call and perhaps get things booked in for 2019. T: 01246 834659 www.polarwindows.co.uk

Angela Wildgoose brings eco-friendly business to Chesterfield Words: Paul Chapman Images: Bright & Beautiful Whether you're busy with a family and a career, or just want some occasional help around the house, hiring a cleaning service is not only practical, but can be a lifesaver. For many of us, having to clean our home is a chore and we all know that we would rather be doing something else we enjoy, especially after a long day at work. Outsourcing your housekeeping is a way to manage your time more efficiently and it can be affordable, even for those on a tight budget. That’s where Bright & Beautiful Chesterfield can help, an award-winning domestic housekeeping franchise providing ecofriendly cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing to a consistently high standard.
Mum of two, Angela knows a thing or two about juggling career and family and decided to put her skills to a different test by launching her own Bright and Beautiful cleaning business earlier this year, caring for the homes and families in Chesterfield and its surrounding area.
lives, from doing a great job for my clients who value their time, to training my team of professional housekeepers to be the best in class. I am hugely passionate about providing a fully managed service that goes that extra mile to make my clients' lives as stress free as possible in the home. Proud to be part of the Bright & Beautiful family, the ethos behind the brand is all about empowering people, so it is great to be able to work with others locally who share this mindset.”
“I really enjoy being a big part of community life in Chesterfield and equally important to me is the ecofriendly philosophy behind all our housekeeping and management practices, especially at a time when allergies are on the increase. We make a point of using and identifying eco-friendly products and equipment which are kinder to the health of our clients, their children and our team members."
Two customers who were delighted with Bright & Beautiful’s housekeeping services: “Bright & Beautiful cleaned my apartment from top to bottom, leaving it lovely and clean. I can’t thank Bright and Beautiful enough for coming out so quickly and I will be using Angela and her team again as they were 100% trustworthy, very polite and pleasant to deal with.” Fiona, Chesterfield. "Thank you so much for the chocolates and card. The house looks so clean. Thank you." Dawn, Derbyshire. Born and bred in Derbyshire, Angela brings a wealth of business expertise to the franchise, having run her own nearly new children’s clothing and toys business and maternity clothing agency for nearly 10 years. With such a busy working life Angela wanted to find a new way of working that would allow her to take a new direction in her life and stay true to her green values.
Angela has built a professional domestic housekeeping service that can be tailored to her customer’s specific needs. She has a trusted team of local professional housekeepers who are carefully selected, reference and Criminal Record checked and follow strict security procedures to give their clients peace of mind. You hear the most amazing conversations in a coffee shop!
I
was idling an hour away last Thursday morning in a local coffee shop and pretty much minding my own business by people watching, when two women came in. They must have been in their mid-thirties and loaded with food shopping. The place was pretty full so they asked if they could sit at my table… well it is difficult not to listen when they were that close. It appeared that they were friends who had met through their children’s school and just bumped into each other by chance. As it was starting to rain they had taken refuge in the coffee shop. The first woman remarked on how well the previous night’s parent’s evening had gone for her and the positive comments about Will (guess that was her son) that the teacher had made. It appears that she had said how much better Will's concentration was; how much better he interacted with other children, was much more confident, calmer and his overall behaviour was better in class too. She said that his reading, writing and spelling had all improved noticeably and his maths was showing signs of more consistent number awareness and he was making fewer mistakes with his basic arithmetic. The second woman congratulated the first and said she had also thought Will had grown up a lot in the last few months as she’d seen him. She then went on to say that her parent's evening had also gone well for her daughter Alice and that Alice’s teacher was also positive about Alice’s improvements. The woman explained that Alice had always struggled with both maths and English for a number of years, and any progress was hard won…two steps forward, one
back was how she described it. However it appears that in the last 6 months, there had been a dramatic improvement in her abilities in both subjects. The teacher said that pennies have been dropping left, right and centre! Alice had raised her spelling age by 3 years over the last 18 months and that she had also improved her maths level by just over 4 years. Then the woman laughed and said that meeting Alice’s maths teacher in the supermarket a week or so ago even she had commented on Alice’s improvement in her confidence and willingness to try new things and wanted to know what her mum was feeding her on! I was quietly smiling to myself listening into this conversation especially when the first women said that Will had been going to Kip for 3 months and the other woman said ‘snap’ Alice had been there for a couple of years as well. They laughed about how it had seemed such a drastic step when they signed them up but as both kids loved it and the results were so apparent it was definitely well worth it. Nodding and smiling they finished their coffees and as the rain had stopped they stood up and with a smile at me ( guess they could see I had been listening!) they gathered up their shopping and left. Mmm I thought, maybe I should look into this Kip thing for my grandson Kai who is not so happy at school all of a sudden! Watch this space... What do you want for your children? I want emotional stability, inner peace and self-worth. Quite an ambitious list for an irate single mum.
So when I was considering childcare, I knew that what I wanted for my children was somewhere that could offer the calmness and patience I was struggling to provide.
As soon as I walked into Storrs Road Preschool, I knew this was the place. As a little boy started crying for his mum in the corner of the room, a childcare assistant scooped him up for a cuddle. A woman helped a little
Page 40
girl into a fancy dress outfit, while another engaged two children in an art activity. The atmosphere was joyful and serene.
Having had at least one of my children in their care for over two years now, and in spite of my persistent separation anxiety, I have never had any concerns about leaving them there. Even when the place is full of frantic toddlers, the staff always look as though there’s nowhere else they’d rather be. What they offer is a stable loveliness.
www.s40local.co.uk
At times, I have taken my eldest in kicking and screaming, probably about how her socks feel or the way her laces are tied. As I arrive, sweating and teetering on the edge, I see my daughter melt as her teacher kneels down to her and soothes her distress in a matter of seconds. I’m not going to lie, I would happily swap places with her. I wish one of them would read me a story. The handful of committed staff know the children personally. They understand how they communicate and what is happening in their lives, and they deal with each child as an individual. But there is a freedom to the environment that allows the children to make their own choices and practise their developing social skills.
We all choose what we feel is best for our children, and I know I couldn’t have found a more caring, nurturing environment for mine. They supplement my loveliness deficiency, and my girls are more balanced for it. Annie Littlewood.

A (Ten) Grand Opening
Mayor Stuart Brittain plays his part in the official opening of the new park. Words:Annie Littlewood Images: FOSP
W
e have all been enjoying the facilities this summer, but in an official ceremony, The Mayor of Chesterfield has congratulated the fundraising group Friends of Somersall Park for their achievements in providing a new play area. Local residents and key contributors from Chesterfield Borough Council and Tesco joined the group, to acknowledge and thank all of those involved in what grew from a simple idea into a lengthy, complex project. Rebecca Robinson, chair of the Friends of Somersall Park, explained how her initial conversation with Chesterfield Borough Council about the safety of the old play park sparked the formation of the group. The old park, installed back in 1992, had reached the end of its useful life and had become slippery and dangerous. In the first of many conversations with John Ramsey of the Council, Rebecca discovered that a friends' group was required to secure funding, and reached out to the Inkerman's friends' group for advice. Rebecca put up posters around Somersall Park, asking for anyone interested in helping update the facilities to meet at an agreed time and place, and remembers her anxiety at the first meeting.
"It was a slightly daunting experience standing in front of strangers, explaining I'd like to start up a friends' group - however, it was also a relief not to find myself sitting alone. That was the start of Friends of Somersall Park, and the beginning of some new and enduring friendships." The group, whose mission was to secure funds for new play equipment, undertook a huge formal consultation process to gauge public opinion about the idea, including face-to-face consultations with school and Page 44
community groups, and a questionnaire on which over a thousand local people backed the plans. This strong demonstration of support was vital, not only for the momentum of the group itself, but for over twenty funding applications which were subsequently submitted. Between the successful bids and local fundraising, enough was finally raised to install the new equipment we enjoy today.
Particular acknowledgement went to Chesterfield Borough Council for the grants they provided in the early stages of the project, especially John Ramsey, without whom the installation of the new park would not have been possible, and Nick Berry of Viridor, who facilitated their ÂŁ25k donation. Special thanks were also given to: Councillor Keith Morgan, Councillor John Boult, Derbyshire County Council, Mansfield Building Society, Tesco, Redbrik, Weightron Bilanciai, Chesterfield Rotary Club, Minerva Choir, Wendy Barnett, Sophie Chapman and Charlotte Brewster, Paul Chapman at S40 Local, Johnny Wray at Britannia Inn, Helen Rowan Photography, Specsavers, Morrison's and Chesterfield Air Cadets. Before officially opening the park, The Lord Mayor thanked Rebecca herself for all of her hard work, along with her committee members from the last four years - Allissa Charlesworth, Esther Botham, Vanessa Gregory, Clare Ashton, Ed Hallam, Hayley Clark, Laura Saxton, Ian Garland, Kathryn Shemwell, Paula Simons and Martin Swain. The Mayor reflected on what a heart-warming project this has been, bringing the community together, and wished the group well in their future endeavours.

Everything Ahead Meet Eric. He's only running across America to faise funds for Spinal Research. Nuff said.
I
recently had the pleasure of crossing paths with a man on an extraordinary mission; to run the USA from coast to coast. That man is Eric Keeler, a local lad but someone who certainly stands out from the Chesterfield crowd, with a beard so lengthy it threatens to lap up his latte as we sit chatting.
"When I was six or seven I remember watching the news Eric tells me. "There was a man who was running across America. I thought 'Wow!'"
In April this year, Eric set off from the United States' most easterly point in Maine, New England, near to the Canadian-US border. From snow-covered beaches through mountains, plains and prairies, he then weaved his way west for four months, following a seemingly infinite liquorice strip of tarmac, before reaching the midwest and the endless golden fields which make up the Corn Belt, girdling the US midriff. "Running across America was always something in the back of my mind," says Eric, "Something crazy, something you hear about other people doing. I kept on telling myself: 'That's a stupid idea - you'd never make it!'. But you never know unless you try."
Page 48
www.s40local.co.uk
For the last five years Eric has been raising money and awareness for Spinal Research, the UK's leading charity, funding research across the world for spinal cord injury. The charity was founded in 1980. Back then, it was thought that spinal cord injury could never be repaired. Yet, in the last forty years, thanks to supporters, scientific research and fundraisers like Eric, paralysis due to spinal cord injury need not be permanent in all cases.
Eric has raised over £10,000 for Spinal Research so far, mostly through running long distance races. It was perhaps a natural development then, that his childhood dream became reality once he found a purpose greater than himself. "It got to the point where I thought: 'You know what, let's give it a go!'" "I don't really like running!" Eric laughs, “It's tiring, it's painful... But I love doing things I can't do well, and I love the people I meet along the way.”
And just a brief glance through Eric's Instagram page run.the.usa provides a collage of smiles and support from those people, but not every encounter has been a positive one. Alongside the warm welcomes and occasional conversations with curious sheriffs, Eric's had some experiences that have certainly kept him on his toes. "The main thing you're concentrating on is the road,” he begins, “Paying attention to every car that passes, just as if you were driving." Eric then pauses a moment, recalling.
“I got run off the road by an artic[ulated] truck in Iowa. The guy was on his mobile, just drifting over the rumble strip onto the hard shoulder. I went as far as I could off the road, but there was a huge ditch ... He didn't see me.”
Eric sat with his hands in his lap, a thousand yard stare, lost in the memory. “The wind from the lorry blew me in the ditch. The guy in the lorry behind stopped
and helped me out and he said: 'It was within half a foot!'
“He thought I'd gone underneath - he thought I was a goner, and that's what I thought as well. It was that close,” explained Eric whizzing a hand within a few inches of his shoulder.
“I took the day off, to get my head straight. I was in a motel when I got a phonecall from reception saying: 'Just stay inside!' - there was a tornado warning.
“Turned out, the campsite I was meant to stay in that night got wiped out by a tornado, so in the end I was half thankful to the truck driver!”
It was an incredible story, enough to shake the conviction of even the most dedicated runner. But not Eric.
“That was the scariest part so far, but at the same time I think: If I can make it through that, I can pretty much make it through anything else.” Eric lived in Chesterfield until, aged 18, he got a job as a tour operator and spent a summer working in Greece. It was a good life and opened his eyes to the possibilities of living and working internationally. He then spent some years doing precisely that, in Italy first, then France, Austria and Canada, before returning to Austria to settle down in the alpine town of Kitzbühel, working as a chef. "It's beautiful there,” says Eric. He stayed in Kitzbühel for eight years and built a life for himself, and intended to set up a business. “But then Brexit made everything uncertain." After March 29th, it's possible that Brits in Austria will require visas not only to pass through borders into neighbouring countries, but also to return back to Austria afterwards. And so, many of the ex-pat community there are leaving the crisp mountain air behind and making the move back to the UK. "I thought it would be easier to just come back," says Eric.
I met Eric during the brief time he was back in Chesterfield, applying for another visa in order to return to the US and complete the final section of his run. From Denver, Colorado, he'll head up into the Rockies, hoping to clear the mountains before the weather begins to turn. And from there, ever west, eventually to San Diego and the Pacific coast by the beginning of December. If you'd like to donate to the incredible work of Spinal Research, you can do so through Eric's website www. c2c.run. You can follow the adventure on Instagram at run.the.usa, or through Facebook at Corner to Corner Running Across America. We'll catch up with Eric again once he returns to the UK, but in the meantime, we wish him the best of luck and the safest of travels. Words: Jack Alexander Images: Larry N. Marsh

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts Not having a home is a situation no-one expects to find themselves in, and yet, for a growing number of people in Chesterfield, it is a reality. For some of our town's most vulnerable residents, cuts to local services have meant that safety nets are no longer in place, and there are now more rough sleepers than ever before. One service which has consistently served the community for the last fourteen years is Church on the Bus. In this time, it has served over fifty thousand meals to the homeless and vulnerably housed, providing a non-judgemental environment for them to share their burdens over a warm drink. The thirty-five volunteers who cover the sessions in Chesterfield and Matlock also distribute donated clothes, sleeping bags, blankets and food, and are able to signpost to other services that may be able to help.
Brampton Brewery Remembrance Days Beers Brampton Brewery are delighted to have been invited to produce two new beers this year in honour of Remembrance Day.
The first one of these Beers, 'Lest We Forget' a dark 4.2% Bitter, is available now and the second has been done in the style of a Belgian Dubbel Beer and has come in at a whopping 7.4% abv. Menin Gate will be available very soon in Cask and they will also be bottling it. Both of our Remembrance Ales will be raising funds for The Poppy Appeal.
14 to 18 Mick Richmond's Tribute to WW1 Heroes The bus provides security, where guests can enjoy warmth and safety, both physical and mentally, as a brief respite from the harsh reality of life on the streets. The project also aims to raise self-esteem in other ways, such as art classes which take place three times a week, providing an outlet for emotional expression. Artists have gone on to exhibit their work at local venues, supported by the project, including S40's cover artist Craig Burr, whose work we featured last year. However, despite its success and longevity, the project faces a major stumbling block, as the charity's bus needs replacing. Converted for purpose, the vehicle is one of the few financial requirements of the project, as the staff are volunteers and the resources are donated, making this service great value for money. Local performer Mick Richmond has written a song in tribute to those heroes who gave their lives for us during the first world war. The song was a joint project with Mark Black from Real Time Live and you can hear and see his performance on Facebook as below, filmed at memorials in Hasland and Dronfield. Mick performed in The Drumbeats during the 60’s, they later became the Bubbles. Mike suffers from inclusion-body myositis and the collaboration came about after Mick looked to Mark to teach him steel slide guitar after having problems playing guitar due to the condition. Travel ... with a capital 'Tee'. Il Mondo Personal Travel Specialists based at Unit 2 131 Chatsworth Road have set up a link that benefits the Chesterfield Golf Club Junior Section.
Jo Bunting, Director at Il Mondo explained "we are social members of the club and are already supporting the Golf Club by advertising on the TV’s in the Club House and we have also sponsored the board on the putting green as you will see from the photograph.
"We decided to help support the Junior section by encouraging members and their friends to place their travel arrangements with Il Mondo Travel and we, in turn, would make a donation to the junior section of the club". Derbyshire's New Bell Ringers Honour WW1 Fallen
Experience life on the Western Front
Over 70 people in Derbyshire of all ages have been learning to ring tower bells this year ready to ring bells on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November, for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.
Visitors to Chesterfield Museum this autumn can experience what life was like for soldiers on the Western Front during the First World War.
They are some of the 2000 people who have joined the national #RingingRemembers campaign to honour the bell ringers who died in WW1. The new bell ringers have joined teams of current ringers in Derbyshire, giving their local communities that iconic soundscape for Sundays, Christmas, weddings and special occasions.
New bell ringers soon become 'hooked' to their new activity, enjoying exhilarating new experiences, effective workouts, challenges and rewards and a fun social life.
New bell ringers are still being recruited. If you are interested, please sign up at a100.cccbr.org.uk before 11th November. On the morning of 11th November, muffles will be used to make bells sound alternately loud then soft when they are rung in remembrance of those who gave their lives serving our country.
In the afternoon and evening the muffles will be removed and bells will ring out in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice: at 12:30pm for 'Ringing Remembers' and at 7:05pm for 'Battle's Over Ringing Out for Peace'. For more info: email LearnToRing@derbyda.org.uk Facebook: Bell Ringing Derbyshire Page 56
Part of the art gallery at the popular attraction, owned and run by Chesterfield Borough Council, will be transformed into a section of a trench like those on the Western Front in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918.
The trench experience will run from Friday 12 October to Saturday 19 January and has been made possible thanks to £1,500 in funding from Museum Development East Midlands and Arts Council England. Councillor Steve Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This autumn is a special moment in our history marking 100 years since the anniversary of the end of the First World War.
“We came up with the idea of The Trench Experience to give people an insight into what life in a trench would have been like. “Sights and smells are included to give visitors a good idea of a soldier’s life during the conflict. “The exhibition also has a local focus on Chesterfield soldiers and visitors will hear extracts from their letters.”
Chesterfield Museum is open each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted. Garden Tips
November Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
1. If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.
2. Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wineglass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light.
3. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. 4. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves, and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.
5. Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.
6. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost. 7. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.
8. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. 9. If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. 10. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more.
On Sunday 2nd December 2018 at the Inspire Community Garden we will celebrate ‘Tree Dressing Day’ an ancient custom all over the world. Come along and discover lots of fun ways you can take part: dressing trees with ribbons, shapes, models, lanterns or any other type of decoration that will make them stand out. Remember to use bright colours! Tree dressing day aims to highlight our responsibility for looking after trees and reminds us of their enormous cultural and environmental importance. See: www.inspirecommunitygarden.org.uk The eleventh annual Transition Chesterfield Potato Day will take place on Saturday 26th January 2019 at The Pavements Shopping Centre in the town centre. To get the best prices consider making a pre-order before 6th December 2018 for your seed potatoes, onion and shallot sets, garlic bulbs, pea and bean seeds etc. see our website: www.potatoday.org.uk or text 07544 566560 with your name and address for the 2019 leaflet and order form.
