Intro
Hi and welcome to December's S40 Local. Firstly, thanks to Hannah Wheeler for her brill cover illustration based on a photograph taken by Helen Rowan Photography at last year's lantern parade in Somersall Park. Hannah has produced a one-off cover that sums up the family and community spirit of the Lantern Parade. This year's parade takes place on Thursday 6 December at 6:15pm, see FB: Somersall Park Friends for details. Another thanks to photography graduate, Mia Foster, who's spent some time with S40 Local on work experience helping with layout and photogarphy for The Yards article - I hope to feature more of her work over the coming months. This edition I've included four pages of Christmas gift ideas from local businesses, all independent and all of them playing an important part in our local economy. I know it's easy to open up a browser, search Amazon and await delivery of Christmas in packages from across the globe but is this helpful? It might take a bit more time to search out products and services that you can buy over the counter but as I've said before, those store owners will be very thankful and the money spent is more likely to stay in our local economy. Perhaps spend Saturday 1st December (Small Business Saturday) searching out the local shops. We also have a great letter from a pupil at Old Hall Junior School which we've shared on page 46, if you read one item this month... make sure it's this one and have a think about how you can help save our planet. Next edition we achieve our 100th S40 Local so if you have anything you'd like to share please let me know, have we helped in any way, have you a story to tell? We’re also looking forward to launching S41 Local this month! Our second edition delivering to 6000 addresses in the Newbold area and around Sheffield Road will be a sister publication to S40 Local, run by Bekah Anstey and Simon Patterson. Please look out for it and if you want to advertise, be part of it or have community news to share let us know. I hope to see you out and about supporting the Christmas activities and events of our local community in the lead up to Christmas. Hope you have happy holidays and I'll see you in 2019. Paul. What's On
A little bit festive? Words & Image: Paul Chapman
Chesterfield seems to be getting into the festive spirit, the town centre lights are on and the S40 Local What’s On is swelling to epic proportions with Christmas events.
The Brampton Food Market at St Thomas’ (1 December) has additional craft stalls where you may pick up Christmas gifts and stocking fillers.
There are Christmas Tree Festivals at St Mary’s Church, the crooked spire (23 November to 2 December) and at St Thomas’ (7 to 9 December)... S40 work in progress tree pictured! Perhaps join the Somersall Park Lantern Parade (6 December) if you prefer an outdoors event and meeting neighbours and friends, the parade kicks off from the Morrison’s end of Walton Dam at 6:15pm then moves along past Walton Dam and into the park for music and refreshments.
For Christmas entertainment don’t forget the pantomime at the Pomegranate.
Visits to Santa are cropping up all over, and there are markets, carol concerts and church services aplenty detailed in the what’s on.
Page 18
www.s40local.co.uk
In recent years we’ve also encouraged giving something back over the Christmas period, and if you’re thinking of doing this, consider supporting the Toy Appeal (page 64), making extra donations to local food banks (St Thomas’ have a collection point), donating to charity shops during your pre-Christmas clear-out or just practicing being a little kinder and more considerate during advent; holding doors open, parking considerately, supporting local shops, using less plastic and spreading Christmas cheer. Happy Christmas!

Business Intro
Laura Whitworth brings Quantum Healing Hypnosis to Chesterfield Words & Images: Laura Whitworth
Q
uantum Healing Hypnosis is whipping up a storm all over the world! The late Dolores Cannon invented the technique. It takes the client on a hypnotherapy journey into their previous lives lived. To provide clarity on the individual's current life circumstances and relief from physical and emotional discomfort. What do Laura's Clients think? ‘Quantum Healing Hypnotherapy allowed me to explore parts of my life that I have been rejecting. Laura is a gentle, patient and wise guide who helped me to unlock the next level of my personal evolution. So many transformations have occurred in just the few weeks that have followed, I'm truly blown away by both the experience and the genuine guidance Laura provides.’ Jo Jerodene, November 2018 ‘I found the session absolutely mind blowing. I have a fear of water and have often dreamt of drowning. In my first past life, I found out that I had drowned which was remarkable. I also learnt my husband is my twin flame which is wonderful and this explains why we have been through so much as a couple and come through the other side. Laura was amazing. I felt like I’d known her for years as she made me feel so at ease. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.’ Sara Crawshaw, November 2018. So this all sounds very intriguing, but who can it help? It can help everyone! Everyone wants to know more about themselves! But in particular, if you have physical ailments and are struggling to find relief that works, this technique is fantastic. Once you are under hypnosis, the Higher Self comes through and provides guidance as to why the illness or discomfort has manifested within the physical body. At this point I then provide suggestions which removes physical discomfort for the client. Also ailments in the physical body are often linked to emotional discomfort in the mind. Through use of this technique, I can heal the mind of the emotional discomfort which in turn provides relief for the body.
Page 20
So it can provide relief for physical ailments and discomfort, what else can it do? It can also help people with phobias that they want to overcome. A lot of phobias are derived from things that have happened to the client in a past life. I can take the client to a past life to highlight where the phobia came from and heal the fear. Thus impacting the client in this life as they no longer hold the fear. Also it can provide you with more confidence within your life, as through exploring who you have been in previous lives, you can realise who 'you are.' It’s like a spa day but for the soul! Spa day for the soul? So it could be like a Christmas Gift with a difference! Exactly! How many people in Chesterfield can say they have had a past life regression! A Christmas present with a real difference as it has the power and potential to change your life. Imagine giving someone a Christmas gift where they can find out more about themselves and heal physical or emotional discomfort within the body at the same time! What a fantastic present! So what do people need to do to book one of these sessions with you for their loved ones, and what do they get to wrap up? Call me on 07950 619924. When they pay for the session I will provide them with an Information Card and Christmas Card to wrap up for their loved one. They can book the session date with me when they pay for the present. Or they can leave the session date blank and then the loved one can call me and book a convenient date later. How much are these sessions and how long do they last? It's a spa experience for the soul as you will feel refreshed and with a new lease of life after! Whilst providing therapy which is tailored specifically for the client. The session lasts 5 hours with me at my office in North Wingfield and the session costs £120. I record the sessions too so the client has a permanent record of the healing and guidance provided.
To book a session with Laura Whitworth please call/text 07950 619924 or email lauraanne.webb@gmail.com

Body and mind boost to help you through the festive season
I
t's meant to be a time of good cheer, relaxation and celebration, but for many, Christmas is stressful.
Stress combined with eating and drinking too much means it can be difficult to maintain a healthy body and mind over the festive season. But there is now a solution available in Chesterfield from one of the area’s leading aesthetic clinics, TAG Aesthetics. Prescription-only Intravenous Vitamin Therapy (IVNT), offers the opportunity to replenish your body’s natural vitamin and amino acid levels in a way that cannot be matched by oral multivitamin supplements.
Receiving vitamins intravenously directly to the bloodstream has become increasingly popular, especially among celebrities, who use IVNT to: • Reboot the system • Rediscover get up and go • Get an energy boost • Burn stubborn areas of fat Registered nurse and owner of TAG Aesthetics Theresa Goldsmith (pictured below) explained: “IVNT is remarkable and I am delighted to now bring it to the area. From personal experience, I can testify to the energy boost that IVNT delivers."
Vitamin, mineral and amino acid deficiencies can lead to many conditions such as: • fatigue • thinning hair • tired looking skin • insomnia • reduced immunity to diseases • decreased mental, physical and sports performance, to name but a few. Studies have shown that the human body absorbs just 10-15% of the vitamins from oral supplements whereas when administered intravenously, 100% is absorbed. "I felt re-invigorated and TAG’s clients are also reporting great results for a number of conditions, from tiredness to fibromyalgia.” A range of IVNT infusions are available at TAG Aesthetics designed to provide personalised treatment plans. The infusions include core ingredients such as glutathione (the master anti-oxidant), Vitamin C, B vitamins, zinc, magnesium, plus other essential amino acids and anti-oxidants. For a helping hand to get you through the festive season and beyond, contact TAG Aesthetics today to arrange your tailored IVNT infusion.
Discover more about Intravenous Vitamin Therapy and other aesthetic treatments now available at TAG Aesthetics by visiting www.tagaesthetics.co.uk or calling Theresa on 07896 485 429. Page 22

The Yards.
We meet the independent businesses in The Yards making a difference on Chesterfield's High Street. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Mia Foster Photography
T
owards the bottom end of the town centre close to the library is The Yards. Nestled behind the shops that line the outside edge; M’s gallery, Ashgate hospice shop and Number 10 The Tea Room there’s a whole host of alleyways and independent shops run by enthusiastic owners and offering a unique selection of products and services to explore. This area has an interesting history. It was previously known as the Dog Kennels of Chesterfield, a well-known slum area which was demolished in the early 20th century to make way for Markham Road and later the Pavements shopping Centre.
The Businesses At The Yards today you'll find an eclectic collection of fifteen businesses including Delightful Decor, M's Gallery & Accessories, Tattoo HQ, Urban Flamingo and Vanishing Point Records (who all feature on the following pages). The Yards community also encompasses the independent businesses on the other side of Beetwell Street, who work together to promote the area and to offer each other support.
As Christmas approaches the businesses are gearing up for a hectic few months, with a 'Christmas at the Yards' event in November seeing a weekend of drink, food, music and stalls from additional retailers in the central courtyard area. Friday 14 December is Christmas Jumper day, don't forget to wear your favourite Christmas Jumper and fit right in. Keep an eye on the Facebook page @TheYardsChesterfield (hover your smart phone camera on the quick code below) for updates on events and late night openings as Christmas approaches ... I'm sure there will be a mince pie and mulled wine somewhere close! Over the next few pages we've a taster of what’s on offer from some of the business owners. We haven't featured everyone so what better excuse to take a walk around The Yards find out more and see what we’ve missed. Just be sure to tell them S40 Local sent you!
Many of the businesses in the Yards are fairly new, Vanishing Point Records opened in 2016 for instance, whilst on the flip side many have been there for a considerable number of years but have grown and expanded with increasing demand. Please Mention S40 Local

M's Gallery Jewellery & Womens Clothing 5 South Street The Yards Who are you? "I'm Emma, I've been living in Chesterfield for 17 years and I opened M's gallery 13 years ago." What do you sell? "At M's we specialise in handmade silver jewellery which is designed and made in the UK. We also have a number of brands such as Coeur de Lion and are proud to be the original stockists in Chesterfield of Nomination a brand we have been working with for approximately ten years." What's your background? "I've always worked in Retail starting with a Christmas job at Woolworths. I spent 12 happy years with Woolies eventually coming to Chesterfield when the new branch opened here. "I was lucky enough to get an insight into the different elements of running a shop and 13 years ago decided I'd like to have a go myself. I liked it so much I opened my second shop M's accessories three years ago." How do you select your products? "I love selecting new items for the shop. The best bit is getting to speak with the designer and talking to them about how they developed a design and what goes into making it. "We are always searching for new designers and would love to speak with any Silversmiths who live locally and design and make their own work." What's the most important difference between you and the retail chains? "I think what makes independent businesses special is that you get to know your customers. You can spend time getting to know what they want. I love that I sometimes see items that I know will be perfect for some of our loyal customers." What's best about being part of the Yards? "The Yards is a really great place to have my shops as it's such a thriving area of independent shops and cafes. I love that most of the businesses are focussed on working together to let everyone know what great independents we have here in Chesterfield." What are you most proud of? "I'm so proud to be part of a fabulous team who support me and my dream. Their support has allowed me to step back a little to have a family. Special mention to Julia who has been my work colleague/friend/ dispenser of excellent childcare tips for 10 years. "Having such a great team means we have a large number of loyal customers who we've been lucky enough to help celebrate milestones in their lives." Page 26

Vanishing Point Records New and Preloved Vinyl 4 Falcon Yard The Yards Corey Lavender, lives in Somersall and has been a Chesterfield resident since 1980. "I opened Vanishing Point Records in 2016 and have been a presenter on Radio Free Matlock since November 2017 which you can listen to at www. radiofreematlock.co.uk." What do you sell? "At Vanishing Point Records we sell second-hand (although we prefer the term "PreLoved") records (vinyl?) of, most, if not all, genres of music ranging from the 1950's to present day, on both albums and singles. We also do a small range of new releases which we are looking to expand very soon. In addition we also sell some music related artwork and limited edition run t-shirts." How did you get to open your own business? "The idea for VPR started whilst I was walking the Camino De Santiago in 2016. I'm not entirely sure when... but somewhere on the 500 mile walk across Spain I went from being not sure what to do next in my life, to being a record store owner even if at that point I still didn't have premises or indeed enough records I wanted to sell." What's your background? "I’d spent 23 years working at Shorts Chartered Accountants in Chesterfield, starting as a fresh-faced office junior in 1993 and ending as a (slightly) less fresh faced manager of their Payroll Department in 2016. Although I enjoyed the job, loved my team there and had some awesome clients, I had itchy feet for some travelling and other ideas I wanted to pursue. The firm are still very much on my radar though as they helped me out when starting the business. "All throughout my life I've always had a love (obsession actually) for music, building up a huge collection of stuff I would never sell including my ticket stubs from the 50 times I've seen Bob Dylan play all over the world (see the "obsession" comment above)." How do you select your products? "For the secondhand stuff, it's mainly down to what people bring in. If Page 28
it's in good condition and it looks interesting I'll give it a go. For new releases I usually stay with Electronica and Soundtracks, purely because that's my current passion. The artwork comes from Barry Thompson, Arts & Minds in Killamarsh, he's a super talented artist with such a unique style. Barry loves his music and produces really cool music related art, which we're very proud to showcase in the store." What's the most important difference between you and the retail chains? "The chains just don't sell what we offer. Many of the releases from yesteryear haven't been pressed onto new vinyl, so you'll only find them in awesome Independent record stores. "We also have a personal connection with many of our returning customers, in our first 2 years of trading many have become friends. They'll pop in for a browse and a chat and they'll tell like-minded people about us. A great example of this happened just last week, a couple of girls were in on their way to watch the new "Bohemian Rhapsody" film and they'd stopped in to buy a Queen album. They timed their visit just as my mate Ian came in. Ian used to work for Freddie Mercury and is a great story teller… he made their day, which was fantastic! "I also offer people the opportunity to pick tunes for our Wednesday night radio show...as long as they're good! And if I'm doing an interview for the radio show in the store, you might get to meet these talented music people whilst you shop!" What’s next? "I’m looking to keep growing the business and improve the online shopping option. But my main aim is to keep meeting the amazing people I've been lucky to stumble across these last two years." What are you most proud of? "For a first time business owner, it’s just the fact that VPR is coming up to its 2nd birthday, and that’s something I'm pretty proud of. Going into business from the security of employment can be a scary venture, so to be here making some exciting future plans is ace!"

Delightful Decor Unique handcrafted products and crafts 7 Falcon Yard
Delightful Decor is owned by Alison Swift. If you’re looking for unique, hand crafted British gifts this Christmas, Delightful Decor would be worth a look. Run by Alison Swift, Delightful Decor not only offers an Aladdin’s cave of gifts, they offer a bespoke picture framing and mounting service, framing anything from photographs and cross stitches to medals and football shirts and personalised printed ribbons. You can add a personal touch to any gift wrapping, Alison can print names, dates and the details of any occasion on to ribbon for you. Alison explained “I first opened a business with my husband at this location 20 years ago this year. Initially we sold craft making supplies and offered a bespoke picture framing service. Seven years ago we closed the old shop and with the help of my eldest daughter changed the shop in to its present form. My daughter moved on with her own business and started a family, so I once again took over the helm. The business took on a new name as Delightful Decor and developed into what you see today”. "Running the business as an independent trader I am able to offer a more personal and more flexible service than the larger chains. Most of my suppliers are local artisan makers, they walk through the door with their produce and stay for a chat, so I get to know them really well. Customers likewise can wander round in a relaxed environment."

much being sick of working for the man, we decided to take a chance. The unit came up online and that was it, we had pretty much moved in (in our minds) that day, with very understanding partners and families, we never looked back." What's your background? "We met working for the Arcadia group, we both worked our way through the ranks, becoming managers and visual merchandisers, however art and painting has always been our love, so it's a dream to take a hobby and turn it into a business."
Who are you? Lys & Em, Urban Flamingo What do you sell? "Unique gifts, ethically sourced, candles, soap & shampoo bars, bath bombs, we aim for plastic free where possible. We have a selection of local artisans who rent space from us, we also make items from reclaimed timber, we offer a fully bespoke service when it comes to our hand painted items (you name it, we paint it!)" How do you select your products? "Always on the look out for something different, quirky and not the norm, we try and stock products to offer a complete gift service, no matter who you are shopping for." What's the most important difference to you and the retail stores? "Our passion for independent retail, we believe that indies are the future of high street retail. We have immersed ourselves into the Yards and helped organise events to help raise the profile of the area, this area is amazing and the friendships we have developed with the other stores have been a bonus, we think that as a collective we are stronger,

so will always try new things to bring people down here, the support of other businesses in the town has proved invaluable." What can you offer that retail chains can't? "Other than our shop dog Hamish! People love calling in and having a chat, it's that personal element missing in big retail, we have a lovely stream of regular customers who support us as local artisans, they can come in for ideas and inspiration or just a wander round." What are the benefits of working in The Yards? "We are a little tucked out of the way, but we use this to our advantage, it's like a haven away from the crowds, like a secret shopping district for those in the know." What's planned in the future? "We plan to grow our soap and shampoo bar business and make our own and are signed up to take a course in soap making in the new year, we strive to eliminate our plastic waste by using only compostable packaging." What are you most proud of? "When we walk through our shop door every morning it makes us smile, we hope that's how everyone feels when they come in!"

Tattoo HQ
Who are you? "I'm Brenden Jones and run the studio with Chris Cross, we're both local to Chesterfield."
For unique custom designs
What do you sell? “We’re a custom Tattoo shop and everything we do is unique to the customer. There are four of us in the studio, me and Chris together with Lola Jones and Liv Frost, between us we have a range of styles and can cater for pretty much every customer.”
9 Theatre Lane
How did you get to open your business? “Chris had his first tattoo in 1983, me in 1990 and I started an apprenticeship in 2000. We’re both self-taught and have learnt through the trade.” “At that time it was difficult to get established, you had to work for a studio, almost begging them to let you help. I spent a lot of time mopping floors and making cups of tea!” What’s your background? “Chris and I were both into graffiti art, we met through friends and discovered we’d moved in each other’s shadows for years, so had loads in common. Talk turned to opening our own studio and once we’d found premises it grew from there. This was in 2009 on Rutland Road, we then had a spell on West Bars, before moving to Theatre Yards.” “We’ve been here at number 9 Theatre Yards for three years in April, the place is light, bright and airy, we’ve created a relaxed clean environment.” How do people decide what they want? “People mostly come in with an idea, it might be a Pinterest image, anything really to give us a starting point. We talk to them and then put together a design on paper that is unique and works for them. Chris works in black and grey realism and I do bold impact colour work. The design and customer requirements may suit one of the four of us better than the others, so we have the option to pass the design to the right member of the team.” “Some designs take time to get right, but we're a friendly bunch with 40 years’ experience between us and you can talk to us until it's right for you. We love what we do and value the art of tattooing.” What are you most proud of? “It’s a big decision to have tattoo artwork and we want the customer to be 100% happy. This approach leads to recommendations, look at our Instagram feedback, it speaks volumes.” What makes you different? “The environment helps, as we’ve said it’s bright and airy, our space, a set of decks at the back of the studio keep us entertained. We’re proud of our approach, we take time to get the design right and love to see people coming back.” “We’ve also got two great female artists; Liv did a two year apprenticeship with us and has been with us for seven years, and Lola joined a year ago." What are the benefits of working in The Yards? “There’s a small community down here, we support each other and it’s a growing, eclectic bunch.”

If your predicted GCSE Maths or English grades are lower than you would like… Act Now! There are only 20 weeks remaining before the Summer 2019 GCSE examinations, and that’s not counting the four weeks for holidays, leaving only 16 weeks in total to up your grades. This equates to only 21 hours of tuition time for a weekly session. You need to make a decision now on what grade you need or want, be it top end of the scales or a pass so you don’t do the dreaded retakes!! Here at Kip we are currently averaging a one, but more often a two grade, increase for both Maths and English if you can get to us by the beginning of the January term. It can often be the difference between nailing the grade to pass and doing it again. We have Sue our maths tutor, who is also an exam marker, ready to remedy your concerns. It could be generally within the subject or specifically for one aspect that you really struggle with, like percentages or Algebra for example. She can help you ‘play the system’ in the actual exam by teaching you which questions are aimed at particular grades. She will show you grade 4 question examples, grade 5, grade 6 and right up to grade 9 questions. This means when you look at the paper on that fateful day in May, you can zone in on the grade questions you want, tackle them and then when time permits work your way up the grade scale to add extra points. Last year’s students at Kip did just that and a predicted grade 5 student could do the grade 5 questions first, then the grade 6 and eventually try a grade 7 in the final few minutes. It saves you from sitting and trying each question and struggling before moving onto the next one. Needless to say if you give us enough time you have the best chance of achieving what you want in the exams in May and June. Kip isn’t for just the students who have lower predicted grades than they want, but also for the higher flyers amongst you that are on for a grade 7 for example but would love a grade 8 or 9 but find one or two parts of the curriculum confusing; we can help you there as well. Sadly last year we had to turn 3 students away because they just left it too late. Two came back after results to work on retakes with us to increase their chances of success. You don’t need that level of stress! So call Jo now to book your place now by calling her on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224.

Environment
The 'P' Word.
That's 'Plastic' in case you were wondering. Words: Paul Chapman & Grace, Old Hall Junior School
Here at S40 Local we take the environment and our community very seriously. So when Grace, a pupil from Old Hall Junior School, wrote to us about our use of plastics, as a business, I felt we needed to respond and help promote the project. Over the page you will find the letter as it arrived, unedited and unchanged. It challenges us all to consider our use of single use plastics to see if we can change our ways. It is difficult but there are small changes that can be made that will hopefully, over the years, lessen the impact and reduce the footprint we leave on this planet. Grace suggests if every person made a simple change it would have a significant impact on our plastic filled oceans. S40's response to Grace included the following text: "As an individual I do take this issue seriously and try to eliminate single use plastic from mine and my family’s lifestyle where possible. As well as looking for ways to reduce single use plastics I am looking for alternatives to the other plastics we use at home. I buy as much of my fruit and vegetables as possible from the market where the produce is less likely to be pre-packed, and I buy a weekly organic vegetable box where most of the produce is loose and the box is returned week after week to the company to be re-used. We have our milk delivered in glass bottles by a milkman who collects and reuses the bottles and have recently purchased bamboo toothbrushes and metal food boxes to replace plastic versions once they become broken or worn out – but there’s still so much more to do." In March this year we discussed the idea of a Plastic Pledge, a way to promote those businesses who were making a change and reducing plastics. We received little response although it's something we would like to promote but it requires people to get involved and tell us what they are doing. If you know of a business offering products that are packaging free then let us know. Urban Flamingo in The Yards for instance offer soap and shampoos for sale in bars that are wrapped in paper and don't require a plastic bottle, a great example of something you can buy to reduce the bottles cluttering up the bathroom. I have no doubt there are many businesses looking at how they can make a change. If you are then please let us know and we'll help share that news. Christmas can lead to a plastic waste mountain in every household and I think Grace's letter is a reminder to us all to consider what we buy and what will be disposed of during this time. Thanks for getting in touch Grace and good luck to Old Hall with the project. Page 44

Awards
Winning and Wine We talk awards and great wine suggestion for Christmas with the team at Bottle & Thyme. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Destination Chesterfield
B
ottle & Thyme were recently awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at the Chesterfield Food and Drink awards. The award, sponsored by Chesterfield Borough Council, is testament to the time and effort the team have put into the restaurant.
“Many of our evening guests choose the fine dining options; duck parcels as a starter with mains of beef short rib or pork cheek for instance. This is alongside other options such as burgers and skewers. All menus have a selection of vegan and vegetarian options, our vegan vegetable wellington is a really popular choice.
Gavin Grainger and his wife Hannah run their completely independent, family owned business and last year picked up the accolades ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Customer Service’.
“We have an extensive cocktail menu, with a happy hour running Sunday to Friday 3-7pm. Whether it’s breakfast mimosas, after work drinks or nights out with friends there’s a cocktail (or two) for everyone.”
“It feels incredible to win Chesterfield’s Restaurant of the Year. We were so happy to win the two awards last year and, this year, we are ecstatic to win this – it means so much. We try to use local suppliers and always try and mix up our seasonal menu to keep things exciting” says Hannah.
Bottle and Thyme do some great wines and we’ve tapped Gav up for a few recommendations over Christmas, whether you’re looking for a nice glass whilst wrapped up in a blanket, watching Strictly or wanting to give Christmas party guests a great tasting wine. Check out his recommendations opposite.
“It’s two years on 17 December since we opened our doors at the old bank premises on Knifesmithgate and in that time we’ve picked up three awards as the Food and Drink Awards” beams Gavin. “And you can come and help us celebrate our second anniversary and the awards on 15 Dec, We’re having an old school birthday party with balloons, cake, sweetie cocktails, cocktail jelly shots, free glitter face painting for customers and music from Beanie and our very own Josh Feeley. I’m so looking forward to that.”
Events
“We got off to a great start but with any business, there are things that take time to sort, so we’ve been reviewing and revising things and we are now at a point of comfort. “Our breakfast, lunch and evening offering has been refined. I love the way the atmosphere changes throughout the day from morning to evening. You can start with breakfast between 9 and 11:30am which is always popular and brunching has definitely caught on in Chesterfield. Our full English and Full Veggie are firm favourites and we have lighter options such as teacakes available too. If myself and Hannah go for a meal anywhere we tend to go for a breakfast!
Bottle and Thyme love an event and over the festive period they have no shortage of things for you to put in your diary. We’ve outlined a few below: 9 Dec: Wreath Making – Enjoy a glass of Prosecco and mulled wine whilst you make a Christmas wreath to hang on your door. Lead by Jessica from JJ’s Flowers on Chatsworth Road. 14 Dec: Christmas Jumper Day – Wear your favourite Christmas jumper and enjoy a chilled out afternoon of carols and mulled wine with a pianist. 15 Dec: Our 2nd birthday party! Balloons, cake, sweetie cocktails, live music and free glitter face painting. 16 Dec: Carols by Candlelight – Working with with Chesterield Studios to bring an afternoon of live carols, mulled wine and mince pies. 23 Dec: Meet Me Under The Mistletoe - Christmas Eve Eve fun, enjoy a sharing board, bottle of fizz and live music for £30. 31 Dec: New Year Swing When You’re GINning 1920’s dress, photo booth, live swing band, cocktail specials, 5 course menu and a champagne cocktail as 2019 arrives for £55 or just drinks and dancing for £10 per head.
“Then we move to the lunch menu which offers great focaccia sandwiches, salads and sharing boards before the evening menu starts. We are really passionate about our coffee and this is available to enjoy in or takeout throughout the day. Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk

Juve Y Camps Reserva De La Familia. Add a bit of sparkle to your Christmas parties with this exceptional Cava. Prosecco is often the bubble of choice but we absolutely love Cava and this is becoming a really popular choice in the restaurant. With rich white peach and citrus flavours and notes of honey, this is the one to choose this Christmas for your celebrations.
Nero Oro Riserva. My personal favourite! Perfect with your Christmas meats, cheeses and nibbles, this red has delicious notes of blackcurrant and candied fig. Curling up in front of the fire with a bottle of this is definitely on our list of Christmas plans.
Blind River Sauvignon Blanc 2016. Tropical notes mixed with citrus and green apple, this white is absolutely full of flavour and a great choice for enjoying with your Christmas dinner. Malbrough Sauvignon is always my white of choice and this one from Malborough’s Awatere Valley doesn’t disappoint. All wines available from Bottle & Thyme or from Majestic Wine, Chatsworth Road.

FOLLOW the STAR Organising Christmas can be quite a strain. Saving up, present ideas, shopping, wrapping, planning menus, travelling to relatives... It’s a long lead up, and at the same time many children feel like it will never arrive! The first Christmas was like that – nine months in the making. God’s journey in human form began long before the star started shining. No one knew what he would look like, or what kind of person he would be. God was hidden – he was with the people, but they did not really know it yet. How often is that the case? How often do we miss the presence of God because we do not know where to look? Or because life is hard and demanding and God feels distant? The Church of England’s “Follow the Star” Christmas campaign encourages
you to come with us on a journey of discovery this festive season and to find God in expected and some unexpected places. One such place where you might expect to encounter God this Christmas is any church that celebrates the real reason for the season. Each Christmas we are reminded of God’s longing to surprise us with awesome gifts of love and new life. Wherever you are this Christmas, you are invited to follow the star and to be with Jesus. We’d love to share in that journey with you at St John’s.
Nick Green (Vicar).

Follow the track to the Scots pine shelter belt ahead, the site of a substantial shooting cabin, with two lines of grouse butts running towards Green Sitches (a sitch being a ditch or wet area). Keep left at a fork just before the pines. 6. Follow the track until it turns right at a fence. Cross the fence by the stile and continue to the derelict farmstead of Bamford House along the edge of the moor, with Derwent Reservoir below on your left. 7. On reaching Bamford House, turn left and take the steep path downhill towards the reservoir. Turn left again once you reach Derwent Reservoir and follow this track alongside the reservoir and back towards Derwent Dam and Fairholmes car park. End: Fairholmes car park, grid ref: SK173893
3. The village was flooded when the Dam was built in the Second World War. Only two buildings remain; the Lodge and the schoolroom, which you pass as you walk along the lane. To view the site of the Page 56

It’s Raining Toads & Frogs
Shhh... It's Santa
When you're up early delivering milk you get to see the world in a different light. So when the wife of our milkman, Sue Wildgoose, got in touch about her first book, we needed to find out more.
We've had some prior news of Santa appearing in a few places locally, if you see him don't work him too hard, he's got a busy few weeks coming up! Chesterfield Canal Santa Claus will be all over the Chesterfield Canal in the build up to Christmas.
Sue was born locally and is one half of the husband and wife team behind Mike Wildgoose Milkman. They deliver milk in 'plastic free' traditional glass bottles and run a small holding at Ladywood Farm, Holymoorside. "I've been surrounded by farm animals for years and this gave me the inspiration to write my first book" says Sue. The book is a collection of thoughts and memories of milkround adventures, farm life and natures encounters. These musings are captured in poetry and free verse and are illustrated by Sue, capturing the essence of country life.
He will be cruising on four different boats leaving from five different locations. On every trip, he will be welcoming children and adults alike, but it's essential that you book in advance.
The book makes an ideal stocking filler. Called 'It's Raining Toads & Frogs' by Sue Wildgoose it's available locally at Holymoorside Store, Holymoor Road, from Ropers Honey, Seals Fodder and if all else fails you can order from Amazon for £9.99. And of course you can contact Sue or Mike directly to order a copy and for your freshly delivered, locally sourced, milk, eggs and yogurt. Follow them on facebook (Ladywood Farm 'Milkman') for details of their pop up shop openings.
The trips are run by the volunteers of the Chesterfield Canal Trust. On all its Santa Special cruises, there is a present for every child and a mince pie and a drink for every adult, £7 per person. In Chesterfield, the tripboat John Varley will be doing Santa Special cruises on every Saturday and Sunday from 24th November to 23rd December and on Wednesday 19th, Thursday 20th and Friday 21st December. All leave from Tapton Lock, on the Tesco roundabout in Chesterfield, S41 7JB. For bookings, ring 01629 533020. Hollingwood Hub on Works Road, Staveley, S43 2PF, will see the tripboat Madeline running Santa Special cruises on every Saturday and Sunday from 1st to 23rd December. For bookings, ring 01629 533020. Check out chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk for details of all the canal trips and events. Rotary Christmas Sleigh Members of Chesterfied Rotary club ensure that Santa visits the main superstores in the area where he helps them collect much needed funds for many of our local charities. If you can help by making a donation as you pass it will be hugely appreciated. He'll be at the following locations. • 30 Nov

Jones & Co Christmas Toy Appeal
Food Hero of the Year
As we enter the Christmas holiday season, Chesterfield Champion Jones & Co Independent Financial Advice is asking local businesses and residents to ‘spare a toy and share some joy’ and support them in their Christmas Toy Appeal. All gifts received will be donated to the Nightingale Ward of the Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
Step forward Chris Radford, head brewer and managing director at Brampton Brewery.
The Nightingale Ward is a dedicated paediatric ward which offers acute medical care to all children and young people aged from one day old, up to their 17th birthday. Every year, many children spend their Christmas on the Nightingale Ward. At such a special time of year, Jones & Co Independent Financial Advice would like to bring some additional Christmas cheer to these children and their families. Adviser Donna Robertson said: “Helping our local children is a cause very close to our hearts and we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to give back and make their stay at the Nightingale Ward a little Magical this Christmas”. Donations can be dropped off at the Jones & Co office, 27 Glumangate, Chesterfield S40 1TX. Gifts can be donated up to 14 December, allowing plenty of time for Santa to deliver the gifts to the children on the ward. Please note, all gifts must be new and unwrapped.
We've already heard from one Chesterfield Food & Drink Awards winner and S40 Local advertiser, and we're pleased to say that local business Brampton Brewery also carried away a rather special award. Congratulations to Brampton Brewery's Head Brewer, Chris Radford, who was awarded the 'Chesterfield Food Hero' accolade at the awards night, held at Chesterfield College. The picture shows Chris with his award presented by Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters (on the left) and a representative from Casa Hotel (right), who kindly sponsored the award. “It feels amazing to win Food Hero of the Year. I look back at people that have won it in previous years and it’s truly humbling that my name has even been in the conversation, never mind winning it. The journey of Brampton Brewery has been amazing, and I never imagined we’d still be going 11 years later.” Chris Radford, Managing Director, Brampton Brewery. Don't forget to check out Brampton Brewery's wide range of beers, wines and spirits at the Beer Cellar on the Chatsworth Road Business Park.

Garden Tips
December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet? This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space. 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and a pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. Ideally keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. 10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield are now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2019 Potato Day (January 26th). There are 42 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late winter planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www. potatoday.org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in). Pre-ordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 6th December 2018. At the Inspire Community Garden we are holding a ‘Tree Dressing Day’ on Sunday 2nd December which is an annual opportunity to celebrate trees, it is a way to raise awareness of the value of trees, and provides an opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together and give thanks to the humble tree. It is open to all ages, you can either bring along your own decoration and we will help you hang it on our tree or make a decoration on the day to hang on our tree or take home and hang on your own tree.
