S40 Local
The community magazine for Brampton, Walton, Brookside and Somersall. Hi everyone, Welcome to the first issue of our community magazine for the area of S40, covering 4000+ homes in Brampton, Walton, Brookside, and Somersall. So what’s it all about? It came to life because — I’m a painter, decorator and tiler, I was looking to advertise but couldn’t find the right place for my advert, so decided to come up with my own magazine and contact other businesses so they too can advertise their products and services locally. Also—I live in Brookside and really want the area to thrive through the, much publicised, recession and beyond, and that means keeping our economy buoyant by spending our money with the person round the corner. Plus, I’ve been taking the ‘go green’ and ‘simpler living’ message on board and that seems to support keeping things local too. These things combined made S40 local a really appealing idea. So if you want to support our community then I need you to get involved. I’d love to hear from you if you: • Can share information or write an article about something relevant to S40? • Want to advertise your business to the 4000 + people in the area • Are organising a local event and want people in S40 to come along and support you—we will list this for free on the “What’s on Page” • Have any ideas to improve the magazine • Have taken a great local photo that we can feature on the front cover. I hope you find this first edition interesting and useful, if you do respond to an advert please mention S40 Local. I look forward to hearing from you soon and would like to thank all those businesses who have supported me by advertising in the 1st issue. Paul S Chapman. Call: Email:

Tree Care in Spring Depending on whether or not you believe in the astronomical or the met office definition, Spring has arrived! For those of you with trees in your gardens, here are some useful things to remember at this time of year in order to promote strong and healthy growth in the coming season: • Clear away weeds from around young trees to reduce the competition for soil nutrients. • Apply wood chip mulch over the root area of your trees (young and old). This helps to suppress weed growth, retain moisture in the soil and create soil conditions similar to the natural environment of a woodland floor. • Adjust tree ties on newly planted trees to avoid constricting the growth of the stem and check the firmness of the planting support. If the tree is established remove the tree tie and planting stake. • Where possible, avoid pruning deciduous trees until they are in full leaf in Summer or dormant during the Winter. • Check the condition of your trees at least once a year and where necessary seek the advice of a qualified arboriculturist. What’s happening round S40 - Chesterfield Incinerator Update If you turned out in the cold and wet on January 8th to go to the public meeting at the Winding Wheel about the planned incinerator in Chesterfield, you might want to know what’s happening. And if you don’t know anything about it … Cyclamax, a private company have submitted an application to develop an incinerator plant for commercial hazardous and non hazardous waste on Dunston Road in Chesterfield - full details on Derbyshire County Councils website— application CW2/0708/56 . The Chesterfield Against Incineration group are opposing the application on health grounds, - research conducted in areas where similar technologies have been developed shows increased cancer and infant mortality rates. Additionally they are concerned about the unsuitability of roads like Dunston Road for HGV movements, job losses from existing businesses that will move away from Chesterfield, the potential for the dioxins released from the incinerator to enter the local food chain via nearby farms, and the destruction of views across the open countryside and adjacent greenbelt land. Julie Harrington from the campaign group ‘ Chesterfield Against Incineration’ is pleased to report that Chesterfield Borough Council voted unanimously to refuse the application, however they are only consultee’s, the final decision rests with Derbyshire County Council who will make the decision in the next few months. “We are keen for people to be able to make up their own minds so please have a look at the application and our website (www.againstincineration.org.uk) to understand both sides, however, if you are concerned write to Derbyshire's Planning Department, via Kevin Finn quoting ref: CW2/0708/56 or email kevin.finn@derbyshire.gov.uk.
