Behind the business: Deirdre Gage @ Created Gallery
S
o Deirdre, tell us about yourself and your background.
“I’m originally from Leeds and moved to Chesterfield with my husband Dominic in 1986. Dominic is a physiotherapist and potter. I was working as a teacher until 2005 when I decided I’d had enough so I found myself a studio in the courtyard of Eyam Hall in the Peak District. I started selling my work as a textile artist and teaching feltmaking.” You’ve not been on Chatsworth Road long, what made you establish Created? “In 2007 we were approached by Libby Morris & she described the idea behind 479. She wondered if I might be interested in owning a craft gallery upstairs and if Dom might be interested in taking workshop space at the rear of 479 for his pottery studio. At the time, our daughter
Clare was just about to finish her degree and had won a major award from the Royal Society of Arts. This gave her money to establish a studio and she decided to take the studio space at 479. After some discussion in the family, we hit on the plan to open Created and to close Woolgathering in Eyam. I was reluctant to lose my workshop space but I’ve just found a new workshop in Brampton Courtyard, courtesy of Liam Jacques and plan to start new courses there from May 2010. My time will be split between the gallery and the courtyard and Clare will be in the gallery along with Dominic to cover all our opening times.”

What are the highlights of Created? “Customers coming back again and again because the gifts they’ve bought from us have been so well received. And people visiting us for the first time because they loved their gift from Created and just had to find the shop!

You always seem so active in the community. Other than Created, where might people see you?
“Created is a family business with Dom, Clare and I involved on a day to day basis but the rest of our clan are dragged in to help. Our eldest son Brendan takes our publicity photographs but works as a theatre lighting technician. Daniel our youngest son and his girlfriend Helen write press releases from their home in Hampshire. Miranda is our youngest daughter at school in Chesterfield but often seen on stage in local theatres. Then there is Robyn Carr, Clare’s friend from uni and a talented designer/maker, my cousin Ben who is studying art and last but not least is Clare’s fiancé, Jon Sim. You’ll see them all in Created at some time or other.”
“I play the tenor horn in Brampton Community Band. Miranda, Dom and I are involved in Hasland Theatre Company with Dom stage managing, Miranda acting and I act or direct.” There’s a lot of change happening on Chatsworth Road at present, what do you think to it all? “I’m very excited, obviously. I’m always intrigued to see what happens next. This is the area we live in so I enjoy telling people what’s new on their doorstep because it’s our doorstep too. It’s important to spread the word when change is happening.”

Ten things in the garden for May Thanks to Paul @ Ashgate Garden Care
Spring is now well upon us and the trees and shrubs in your garden will hopefully be growing in leaps and bounds. So this month you need to... 1. 2. 3. 4.

Mow your lawn on a regular basis. Keep hoeing your flower beds and veggie plot to keep weeds under control. Lift and divide daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs. Start thinking about giving your conifers and other evergreen hedges their first cut. Check for nesting birds before you start. Plant out summer bedding plants after Whit Sunday or when the risk of frost has gone. Prune Ribes and Berberis after they have flowered. Clean your patio and garden furniture in preparation for the first BBQ of the year … hopefully. Coppice or pollard Eucalyptus trees to keep them under control. Earth up early potatoes. Ensure any newly planted shrubs do not run out of water.

Derbyshire Open Arts: On Your Doorstep ay 29th – 31st brings our second bank holiday weekend in May, and the fifth annual Derbyshire Open Arts (“Darts”) event, where artists throw open their homes, studios, gather in public halls or venues to offer you the opportunity to meet them, view and perhaps buy their work, find out more and be inspired. The event reaches every corner of our county, and we are lucky to have nine artists displaying in this very area.

So if you want to find out more, go and get yourself a booklet. In S40 Local, I wanted to introduce you to those nine participants showing on our doorstep...
Clare Gage (1) is an award winning ceramic artist creating elegant porcelain tableware in her signature textile-inspired style. She works from her studio to the rear of four7nine on Chatsworth Road. Clare's studio will be open for you to have a look around Liz Wellby and Created Gallery (owned by Clare's family) will be open during the weekend giving you the chance to discover more creative pieces whilst you visit. On the 28th May from 7:30 – 9:30, Created are hosting a Preview Party to celebrate the start of the “Darts” weekend, so why not come along and kick off a creative weekend in style.
Andy Rodgers (2) Andy’s been involved in Derbyshire Open Arts since its beginnings and so this year he’s ‘giving it a go’ and taking part. “Basically, it's a bit of fun for me - I'm retired, so fortunate that I don’t need to take it too seriously. Hence my ‘Overground Art’, the main part of what I'll have on show, it includes one of Chesterfield, ‘Derbyshire Overground’ ... and even a ‘Holymoorside Overground’. I’ll also have framed photographs and photograph greetings cards based on the photos on display.” 12 12

“I studied Art & Design at Chesterfield College in the mid 1990's, started making mosaics in 2003 and have exhibited in the Derbyshire Open Arts event since its inception in 2006. I love the whole process of mosaics from the first idea, the design, and the "making" process. Sometimes my work is idea/image led and other times material led. I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and materials. I do use a lot of stained glass in my mosaics but have used materials as diverse as rusted metal and feathers. I exhibit at local art events and galleries, and happily take on commissions”.
Lucy Palmer (5) Lucy creates unique and beautiful jewellery inspired by myths, fairytales and folk lore, with an emphasis on animals and the natural world. In her jewellery she escapes the mundane and creates a magical world of far away places, enchanted forests and mysterious creatures. The intricate designs are cut by hand in precious metals and are often layered to give a three dimensional, miniature stage. Techniques used to embellish the surface, include ‘Keum Boo’, an ancient Korean technique of fusing pure gold foil to silver.

After graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in ‘Decorative Arts’, Lucy spent several years working as a Community Artist before returning to focus on producing her own work. Each piece of jewellery is handmade by Lucy in her workshop at Banks Mill studios, Derby. Please ensure you mention S40 Local when responding

Derbyshire Open Arts: On Your Doorstep Jennie Merriman ( 6) My work centres on the development of weaving using a variety of structures, and often includes the use of acrylic sheet and wood. “I began my textile work as an embroiderer. After taking City and Guilds embroidery and design courses in Sheffield I began to develop an affinity for working with acrylic sheet, initially to present my textile work and then it became an integral part of the work. I drilled holes in the clear transparent plastic to stitch into it with a variety of threads, and incorporated digitally manipulated images, sometimes creating many layers to the work. As my work progresses I create my own ways of working, as there are no traditional techniques to follow and I often have to find my own way and develop a new set of rules to inform the process.

Compositions progress from a simple geometric basis working towards the characteristics of harmony and discipline. Starting with a two dimensional frame it builds upon itself to create three dimensional structures and patterns of stability between the various entities”.
Jerry Daniel ( 7) Pictorial photography based on minor landscape features. “My landscape images use details rather than traditional views, rarely including the horizon. Illuminating this obvious reference point increases the potential for landscapes to go beyond identifiable locations, and become interpretations, a vehicle for my creative ideas which are still influenced by my art school years. However, I’m sure there are other unconscious stimulants from the multimedia we absorb daily. I interpret landscapes by imposing my cultural values onto trees, water and rocks. This process is mostly intuitive but also careful composition, often involving several visits to a location, or combining images with different exposure values, filters or focus. The images have minor manipulations and enhancements in Photoshop”. 14 14

Karen Herrick (8) Karen from Harlequin Arts, based in Brampton Courtyard, produces a range of textile art inspired by colour and nature, utilising both hand and machine stitch, from banners and pictures to smaller items. Throughout the year, Karen works all across the county and beyond, leading a variety of bespoke creative art workshops for schools, local councils and health authorities. Connecting Our Community

Maldivian Retreat hether you’re planning a special break, a romantic interlude or just an extraordinary family break, the Maldives is certainly the destination for a holiday of a lifetime.

If you doubted that paradise existed you’ve never visited this beautiful Maldivian retreat. Recently I visited Halaveli one of the many Maldivian islands, which was transformed and reopened in April 2009 by the Constance group, and now provides the exquisite island retreat of the Constance Halaveli Resort. Our journey began on an overnight flight from Birmingham airport via Dubai to Male. We were met and swiftly escorted to the resorts private lounge to await our transfer, a 20 minute journey by sea plane to our
very own Robinson Crusoe Island, with a very 21st century touch of luxury. It sits floating in the North Ari atoll, shaped like a curved Dhoni (Maldivian Boat), a theme very much apparent throughout the island. The Five star Halaveli resort is a place where time seems to have stopped and dreams really do become reality, it’s certainly a place to relax and regenerate in overwhelming peacefulness. The island has one of the longest jetties in the Maldives, elegantly standing over a remarkably tempting turquoise lagoon. Here you can find the 57 water villas, all offering outstanding privacy and comfort. The villas are creatively designed with high ceilings that represent the shape of the Dhoni, they are spacious and furnished to a very high standard; all have flat screen TV, wifi and apple Mac computer technology. The bathrooms are 18 18
stunning with freestanding bathtubs virtually on the deck, so after a very hard day you can soak in luxurious bath oils watching the sunset over the lagoon. I told you paradise does really exist! The outside space is as breathtaking; you have your own secluded sundeck which leads onto an infinity plunge pool dropping off into the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and steps lead down into the water where you can swim with an array of tropical fish. The beach villas in comparison, of which there are 28 in all, are dotted around the island with beachfront location. They are shielded by tropical gardens which offer immense privacy. To the front there’s a quiet retreat for morning breakfast or evening in villa dining. To the rear, the villas have large open air bathrooms with sunken bathtubs and rainforest showers, the 8 double storey villas are ideal for families.

Too many fresh fruits to recognise or remember, fish of every variety freshly caught from the local waters, homemade breads, cakes and puddings to die for, meats so succulent and tender, the list is endless; and if you didn’t see what you wanted, one of the many top chefs would be honoured to prepare your favourite dish. I’ve never been so spoilt in all my life!
