Intro
Hi All and Welcome to the March edition. It's a busy month, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day, as if we need an excuse to make pancakes), start of Spring, Mother's Day, clocks changing, Easter, my birthday, my son's birthday and the internet tells me on the 2 March it's Old Stuff Day ... that encourages people to review daily routine and make some exciting changes! Mentioning Mother's Day, I was planning a page of suggestions for Mum but a last minute community project arrived and took its place, so I'll have to point you in the direction of ... • Breakfast at Bottle & Thyme • Vouchers for a treatment at The Look • Afternoon Tea at Libby's • Facial at 4 Elements Spa & Beauty • Book a place for you and Mum on the Create Change Day • A night at the Theatre, Bottle & Thyme for tea before • Some sustainable stuff from Steph • A place at the Rotary Whisky Tasting Night, see below Whatever you do, there are lots of options on our pages, all local, all good for the local economy, all from brilliant independent businesses, and all with no plastic packaging! Also huge thanks to the team at Defeye Creative for this editions cover art, who knew that Phil Taylor from Motorhead was from Hasland? He drummed with the band for 14 years, recording 15 albums. Check out the S41 Local cover for a reverse artwork in a different colour. Great work guys and more on this next edition. And just in before we went to print, this arrives and we couldn't fit it on the What's On!! WHISKY TASTING NIGHT: Saturday 23 March. Organised by Chesterfield Rotary, 7: 30pm at the Olde House, Newbold. At least 6 drams of single malt whisky, plus a traditional haggis supper. One Man, One Cause On Foot Across America Words: Jack Alexander Images: Eric Keeler
I
n September we met with Eric Keeler, a Chesterfield local raising money for Spinal Research by running coast-to-coast across the United States. He was back in the UK to apply for another visa before heading back out to complete the second leg of his epic journey, from Denver, Colorado through to the Pacific coastline of California. Geography buffs out there will already know the immediate challenge awaiting Eric upon his return - the Rocky Mountains. Stretching for more than 3,000 miles from British Columbia, in western Canada, all the way down to New Mexico, The Rockies contain the highest peaks in central North America. For Eric, crossing the mountain pass was inevitable. It was an ominous prospect in itself, made more so when, less than two hours in, Eric beheld huge red clouds gathering on the horizon. “I saw the dust rolling in and knew I wouldn’t make it,” says Eric. An hour and a half from civilisation, Eric opted to set up camp, tying both the tent and his stroller, filled with all his worldly belongings, to a nearby tree. It had been a season of extreme weather in the US, with four hurricanes in the space of five weeks charging up from New Mexico into California. Combined with huge quantities of ash left over from wildfires, phenomenal dust storms were enveloping entire swathes of the Midwest. “Give it a few hours,” thought Eric. “It’ll blow over.” He spent the next 18 hours trapped inside his tent competing with 80mph winds just to keep it on the ground. He showed me a video clip filmed from inside.
Page 6
The noise was deafening, all around him the walls flapping wildly. I asked him how he possibly slept. He laughed: “I didn’t!” Eric continued south into New Mexico, where he spent another long night clutching a knife and bear repellant, his tent circled by coyotes. Then he followed the highway west into Arizona, Nevada and finally California, where he linked up with Route 66 and spent seven days in the Mojave Desert. A giant section of the highway was, quite literally, deserted, as the road was closed for maintenance. “It was the most peaceful, the most alone I’ve been - it was the last challenge.” As Eric left the desert landscape behind and followed the telltale signs of civilisation, straightlined twilight silhouettes and wires hanging vine-like between, he found himself churning through the final miles of his Herculean endeavour. California meant the end; it meant the ocean. Eric resisted the urge to swim until reaching San Diego, where his family were waiting to welcome him and cheer him along as he took a most welldeserved plunge. 3,646 miles, 186 days, 2 feet and 1 man with a cause; he’d done it. “When times were tough, I’d remember how far I’d come, and all the people who’d supported me along the way, and everyone who’s donated to the charity.” Eric has been raising money and awareness for Spinal Research, the UK's leading charity for funding research into spinal cord injury, for over five years. In that time he’s raised over £7,000, mostly through his running, and his latest endeavours look to add a further £12,000 to that figure.
www.s40local.co.uk
People Shortly after completing his adventure, Eric returned home to the UK. “It was only after two weeks that I had the realisation: I’m not going back!” he tells me. “But at the same time, it’s not really over.” Eric refers to the opportunities which have arisen since finishing the run; the possibility to share his story and further promote the cause of Spinal Research. In December he was interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield, and has been invited to speak at his local schools in the Wingerworth area. “I still don’t consider myself a runner!” Eric claims. Despite that, he plans to keep himself busy through 2019 by setting up his own running company, providing running apparel and virtual racing events to all. With each competitor choosing a race and completing the distance however they like, whether that’s on a treadmill, as part of a running group or as a personal challenge, virtual racing is a surprisingly simple concept which has taken the running world by storm. The best part is, with just a few simple calculations, wheelchair users can
convert their distances into conventional ‘steps’ and compare their stats the same way as everyone else. “It’ll be for everyone,” says Eric, “a network for support, and to compete, and completely wheelchair accessible.” It’s clear that, for Eric, running is about people. Perhaps that’s why he still doesn’t see himself a runner, because he is, and will always be, an amateur who achieved the extraordinary, who crossed a continent on foot, and of all the things experienced along the way, valued the human connections most of all. “I got by on my own two feet, but I owe so much to the kindness of good people along the way.” As I made to leave and shook Eric’s hand, I commended him once more on his achievement, and he chuckled. “Well, all that’s left now is for you to have a go,” he said. Well, there’s an idea.
To learn more about Spinal Research, head online to www.spinal-research.org. If you'd like to show your support for Eric’s incredible achievement you can still sponsor him through his blog at www.c2c.run. And speaking of which, Eric’s been shortlisted at the Running Awards in the Best Personal Blog category, for the second year running. Register your vote online at therunningawards.com. To look back at the journey, and follow whatever comes next, you can find Eric on Instagram at run.the. usa, or on Facebook at Corner to Corner - Running Across America. Page 8

Bottle & Thyme... At Any Time Words: Paul Chapman Images: Bottle & Thyme and Facebook

hether it’s breakfast, morning coffee, relaxed lunch, afternoon tea, after work drinks, an evening meal or a catch up with friends, Bottle and Thyme’s evolving offer will be the right place for you. The ambience, the food and the drinks change throughout the day – and the friendly, flexible team work to accommodate your needs. Gavin Grainger invited us down to experience and sample their Friday evening offering of two cocktails for £10 and live acoustic music. Even though it was early February we arrived to find the place bustling with a post-Christmas party, whilst couples and groups of friends were enjoying an evening meal or calling in for cocktails on their evening ‘round town’. We’re not connoisseurs of cocktails so we were pleased when knowledgeable Rhianna assisted with our cocktail choices and made suggestions and recommendations based on our favourite flavours and spirits. My ‘About Figgin Thyme’ was a B&T signature and consisted of a blend of Havana 7-year rum, fig liqueur, fresh lime, maple syrup, thyme liqueur and cloudy apple. It was yummy, but then I like anything with maple syrup. Nicola went for a ‘Rosemary Bramble’ consisted of Portobello gin, Acai liqueur, Raspberry liqueur, lemon juice, rosemary, sugar syrup, decorated with fresh rosemary, the aroma of which is enough to lift any spirit. The cocktail list is extensive and if you’re a firsttime visitor it's worth checking out the drinks menu at bottleandthyme.co.uk/tipplethyme to help narrow down your choice before going. The food is always delightfully presented and delicious and tonight did not disappoint, starters of beetroot terrine (goats cheese, crushed walnut, spinach and a burnt orange dressing) and pulled duck parcels (damson and port sauce, burnt orange dressed rocket) followed by mains of confit duck leg (fondant potatoes, carrot puree, roast parsnip, green beans, damson and port sauce) and a spicy falafel burger (smashed avocado and red onion marmalade), we skipped puddings. ‘Nuff said.
Page 20
The music kicked off at around 9:30pm, Beanie was playing. He’s a local singer, guitarist and very talented he is too. His set includes something for everyone, Portugal. The Man, Nirvana, The White Stripes, through more local tunes from Pulp, the Stone Roses, Oasis (ok, local’ish) to The Eagles, Buddy Holly and Elvis. It was a bitterly cold night outside and, taking requests, Beanie continued to warm his audience with laid back tunes to please. Bottle and Thyme gives us a place to chill and catch up with friends or loved ones without the pushing and shoving of an over-crowded bar, without massive TV screens over-head and where the music gives atmosphere but doesn’t prevent conversation. It’s a place where you could head out for an afternoon drinking session, where you can stay for some food and head home in time for jammies at 10pm, having righted the world and caught up with the latest gossip. The two cocktails for £10 offer is available from 3 to 7pm Sunday through to Friday. Friday and Saturday evenings are accompanied by live music from 9pm, see facebook @ bottleandthyme for artists performing each night. Wednesday night Wine Down Wednesdays offers menu specials, free wine tasters, wine carafes and 20% off the wine menu. If you’ve never called in to Bottle & Thyme we can recommend it, but only if you’re looking for a lovely environment with a warm friendly welcome in which to meet friends at any time of the day or night! Prime Vets Words: Paul Chapman Image: Prime Veterinary
D
inu Catilina is the veterinary surgeon behind Prime Veterinary Practice - the newest practice in Chesterfield.
Born and raised in Transylvania, Dinu is a long way from home, but his life-long love for animals has led to a veterinary career which has recently involved the opening of their new, completely independent veterinary practice PRIME VETS, in Chesterfield. Dinu is 14 years qualified and has worked for the last four years in a local practice, before that he was based in South Yorkshire. I asked what led him to make the jump from employee to owner? “Over the past few years there have been significant changes in the way many veterinary practices are run and owned” explained Dinu. “Many of the independent practices are being bought out by big corporations, they may look like a local practice but actually they are part of something much larger. We are one of only two Chesterfield-based vets that are privately owned” “I think this influences the relationship between clients and their vet. Out-of-hours support for example, may only be available from one practice in the group or outsourced to other clinics so should you have any problems you need to travel out of the area. It’s important to me that I get to know the animals and their owners and build a strong long-term relationship. Being there for our clients and their pets means a 24/7 service to me and we are very proud to be able to offer out of hours care to our registered clients at our own practice.” PRIME can provide a wide range of services from routine work to advanced procedures. Dinu has an RCVS certificate in small animal surgery and enjoys doing advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures for registered or referred clients. The practice also offers small animal reproduction services, being one of only five veterinary practices in the UK with canine semen banks. Page 24
Dinu is supported by his wife Lisa who helps run the practice, together with two very experienced registered veterinary nurses, Jenny Gibbons and Kayleigh Lievesley who complete the team. Whilst I was there, it was clear to me that Dinu and Lisa care very much about the quality of care they offer. They spoke about the growth in the client base since their opening, all from recommendation. This was proven by my visit, cancelled the first time as they responded to an out-of-hours emergency caesarian followed by a full day of appointments. The building has been completely refurbished, it’s clean tidy, contemporary and with ample parking to the rear. The reception is large and spacious with a modern homely feel. “We want the practice to feel like it’s part of the community, it’s important for us to be the family vet of choice” explained Dinu. “We opened in November last year and the first few months have been amazing” says Dinu. “People are so happy with what they find when they come through the door, their feedback is constantly telling us they feel relaxed, not rushed and they appreciate the longer appointments, this also means that waiting time is minimised ... provided no emergencies arrive that is!” As we finished, we had an interesting chat around community and the impact of large corporations on them. I feel like this team have it right. If you need services for your family pet please call down and see for yourself, and as always, be sure to mention where you saw them. Do you do enough to look after your body's largest organ - your skin? Winter can be just as harsh on our skin as the sun’s penetrating rays during the summer months. UV rays are still a danger, but there is also the added punishment of cold air, wind and low humidity outdoors which dry your skin out and can be just as ageing as the sun. TAG Aesthetics' registered nurse Theresa Goldsmith has a passion for skin. Trained and experienced in the management of skin conditions - including acne, acne scarring, stretch marks, pigmentation (dark spots) and premature lines or wrinkles – Theresa can offer practical advice and treatment to rejuvenate and revitalise your skin. She explains: “Whatever the weather we can all achieve optimal skin health and glowing skin to be proud of. However, skin can become dysfunctional and unhealthy for a number of reasons. But there are a variety of steps you can take to both avoid and manage problem skin." For example, acne scarring can be effectively reduced with treatments such as a medical grade Dermaroller which works by encouraging your natural collagen, improving the texture of the skin, this treatment can also help to reduce lines and wrinkles.
Obagi Medical was developed by worldrenowned Dr Obagi over 30 years ago. Unlike over-the-counter skincare products, Obagi Medical have proven clinical effectiveness. Being prescription only means that the products have sufficient active ingredients to actually transform your skin and treat a range of skin conditions including: • Acne • Pigmentation disorders • Plugged pores • Areas with diminished circulation • Dehydrated skin • Vascular conditions • Rosacea • Skin ageing, irritations and damage • Areas with collagen loss • Sensitive and thinned skin areas. Theresa adds: “We know that active ingredients such as vitamin C and vitamin A make a big difference to our skin health. The vitamin C in the Obagi range start at a 10% concentration increasing to 20%. At these levels your skin is going to become brighter and clearer. It's a similar story with the vitamin A levels in the products, which are sufficient to start the repair process of damaged facial skin cells to give fresher, more radiant skin.” No matter what your skin concern, TAG Aesthetics has a skin treatment available to help. Contact Theresa for her professional advice and your personalised treatment plan.
TAG Aesthetics offers bespoke treatment plans following a face to face consultation. A personal favourite of Theresa’s is the award winning, world leading brand of anti-ageing, prescriptiononly skincare products - Obagi Medical. And it's only available in Chesterfield from TAG Aesthetics.

Do you wish you could change the world? Words & Images: Clare Gage
Create Change Chesterfield is happening on Sunday 10th March. We will gather together, hear about great ideas and think about changing the world! The day has been organised by Clare Gage who is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. The RSA was founded on a belief that the creativity of ideas could enrich social progress. Clare has used the support of the RSA to create this day for her local community. As part of the day we will hear from researchers from the RSA Action and Research centre, a place bubbling with inspiring ideas with action being taken towards making them happen. We’ll be led in an activity to think about the role a universal basic income could play in our society. We’ll also be joined by Talkshop to learn about deliberative democracy. They specialise in giving people a voice in matters that concern them so that democracy works better for everyone. Don't be put off if these terms seem technical and you're more about chatting and meeting interesting people. That's the main part of the day!
Page 28
There will also be a chance to get involved in hands-on craft sessions inspired by the craftivism movement. This event is for everyone - especially those in the age group who find themselves juggling work/family/homelife. Children are welcome – we have crèche facilities, and theatre workshops to entertain the kids. Lunch will be provided so that we can share a meal together. The day is free to attend and will be a friendly, lively day full of positive ideas for changing our world. Pomegranate Youth Theatre & Gekkota Arts Who's line is it anyway? Words: Carole Copeland Images: Gekkota Arts
T
he Pomegranate Youth Theatre offers weekly drama workshops that are available to all, regardless of their ethnic or social background, at a low cost.
The Pomegranate Youth Theatre was formed in 2002 from an external drama group consisting of 10 to 15 members. It has grown to an existing group of up to 90 young people ages 7-30, drawn from all around Chesterfield and outlying area.
'Promotes teamwork, life and social skills, creativity & confidence'
The fun workshops provide a service to teach all aspects of stagecraft with professional facilitators which promote teamwork, social skills, emotional intelligence, creativity and confidence. The young people involved choose and explore issues relevant to themselves and the area in which they live as well as subjects and events from other aspects of life through research, improvisation, devising, scripting and performing.
Page 32
Gekkota Arts evolved from the Pomegranate Youth Theatre. It was formed with a group of long-standing Youth Theatre members who wished to continue their journey and further their skills in every aspect of stagecraft. They produce high quality performances of new and existing works, in the local area and further afield. They are also bookable for 'Comedy Improv' events. The Pomegranate Youth Theatre senior groups are part of the National Theatre's Connections this year and will be performing 'Salt ' by Dawn King at the Rose Theatre , Chesterfield and Sheffield Theatres studio in March. All groups will be performing their showcase at Pomegranate Theatre as part the 70th anniversary on April 23rd, as this lands on Shakespeare's birthday, Gekkota Arts are currently working on 'Twelfth Pint' (their own adaptation of 'Twelfth Night').

Stephen's
Story
In January 2018 Stephen was 7 ½ years old (year 3) and was already finding school life tough, especially Maths! It’s hard to look around and see all your mates doing better than you and finishing the work before you. He grew quieter and quieter and reached such a low point that he wouldn’t put his hand up to answer any questions in case he got the answer wrong and was laughed at. Luckily his mum found Jo at Kip McGrath and took him along for a session. Jo put together a programme to tackle Stephen’s fear of reading. The programme included phonics and she encouraged him to read rhyming stories such as ‘Cat in the Hat’. As he learned the various combinations of the letters in the book he found he could then make more complex words from them. He loved going to ‘Kip’ and as his confidence grew so did his achievements. Success breeds success. He didn’t stop there… Jo adapted his learning plan to include grammar, writing, reading/comprehension and maths. Stephen found that he could use his new skills in these other areas as well and so his confidence and self-esteem increased immensely.
Stephen’s hand is now one of the first up in the classroom each day and he has a big smile on his face as he goes to school, but maybe that is because he is now the equal of his friends in more than kicking the football around. When Stephen went to Kip in January 2018 his assessed ability in ages were… Reading 6 years 3 months, Comprehension 6 years 1 month and Spelling at Year 2 level. His newly assessed improvement in January 2019 is fantastic. His Reading age - is now 8 years 3months, Comprehension 8 years 6 months and Spelling at Year 4 level with his peers. A staggering two years growth in just one year! So if you have a ‘Stephen’ or know of one … Call Jo on: 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment NOW!

Plastic’s not fantastic Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Steph's Suatainable Stuff
S
teph Mannion is creative, innovative and inventive, and has been trying to live more sustainably for some time, but it wasn’t until some life changes resulted in her being jobless, that her hobbies and interests converged - Steph’s Sustainable Stuff was born. Steph had been caring for a lady for 9 years - the lady died in April last year, around the same time that Steph’s mum died, and Steph found she didn’t have the emotional capacity to take on another caring role immediately. During this time, she bumped into a friend with a stall on Chesterfield market, who suggested she share the stall and sell some of her crafts. Steph agreed and gathered up some of her creations to sell on the stall; twiddle muffs (knitted, crocheted or fabric tubes with accessories such as ribbons and buttons sewn on the inside and outside, keeping a person’s hands warm while they twiddle the bits and pieces (reducing agitation) she’d made for people with Alzheimer’s, coffee bags handmade bags that people can take into places selling loose coffee (e.g. Northern
Page 38

Tea Merchants) for refilling rather than buying coffee in plastic, veg bags for people to take to the shops to fill with vegetables - avoiding the need for a plastic bag. Steph got the bug and took her own stall on Chesterfield Market, standing every Saturday in New Square, opposite Dents. Steph explains “When I started, I didn’t have much to sell, but the products I took were popular. This inspired me to widen my range and I started selling bags of soap nuts, that people can use as an alternative to washing powders or liquids, I buy the soap nuts in bulk and sell them in hand-made, reusable materials bags - with a smaller bag inside for using the soap nuts in the washing machine. You basically use 3 or 4 soap nuts in the washing machine drum, you can use the same nuts for about 4 washes. At £5 for approx. 50 washes, the price is comparable to buying washing products, yet there’s no plastic, your clothes smell and feel as clean, and the final product can be composted. I’ll also refill your soap nut bag again” “I believe eco-friendly shouldn’t come with a premium price tag, eco products should be accessible to all. If we want people to embrace eco friendly they shouldn’t be more expensive, so I work hard to make my products comparable and affordable. I buy things in bulk so I can sell them on at reasonable prices”.
“Whatever you do, however small – it all helps” Steph Mannion
As I talked to Steph it became clear how innovative she is, finding new ways to solve people’s challenges or reuse waste in new ethical ways. Steph explained “a friend working in catering was using large industrial sized tins of food and wondered whether I could use the empty tins.
"With my brother we designed and built rocket stoves; portable outdoor cooking devices using the tins, I took them to the stall and they proved a great hit for Christmas gifts. We’ve also designed a lightweight wooden drinks carrier, which carries up to 4 drinks at a time, with a deluxe version including a bulldog clip for carrying snacks." Originally designed for her brother to carry 4 pints of beer, it’s adaptable and also holds 4 bamboo coffee cups, like the ones she sells on her stall or some wine glasses. On her stall Steph also refills washing up bottles, £2 a litre for a refill or £2.40 for a new environmentally friendly bottle, bars of shampoo, beeswax wrapping - a reusable covering to use as an alternative to cling film - which she also makes herself obtaining the beeswax from Roper’s honey - 10 minutes down the road from where she lives. I asked Steph for some top tips for people who want to start making a change and reducing their plastic consumption • Replacing cling film for the beeswax wrap (it freezes OK too) • Saying no plastic bags for vegetables • Taking your own containers where you can • Refill washing up bottles .. from the stall Buy online at Facebook Steph’s Sustainable Stuff, and in Etsy.com/StephsSustainables and she’ll post products or do local deliveries. But I recommend you go and see her at the stall, she’s interesting and engaging and can offer you loads of helpful hints and tips, and explain how to use the products she sells, as we try and embrace new and less damaging ways of doing things. ECO Bricks A simple solution for plastic. Words: Simon Paterson Images: FB Ecobricksuk
A
n ecobrick is a two-litre plastic bottle filled to the brim with plastic! Anything from crisp packets and sweet wrappers to baubles and toys can be cut up and stuffed into a plastic bottle to a set density. The lid is then screwed on and the bottle is used as a building brick, brilliant! Ecobricks enable us to take personal responsibility for our plastic and are great to make with your kids, teaching them about the importance of recycling and how we can all make a difference, by making small changes!
HOW TO: ECO Bricks
Ecobricking is a simple but brilliant solution to the world’s crisis. As a species we are producing and consuming more plastic than ever before. The UK alone produces over 3.7 million tonnes of plastic per year, a lot of which cannot be recycled! Plastic is an incredible material with many positive properties that make it ideal for building with, so why let it go to waste?
• Twist plastic before inserting in bottle. This makes it easier to poke in.
With ecobicks we have the chance to put the positive qualities of plastic that were once so problematic - longevity, durability - to good and green use! With a little creativity and smidgen of imagination ecobricks can be used to build almost anything! People all around the globe are using ecobricks to build furniture, gardens, walls, sheds, art and even houses! Making an ecobrick is fairly straightforward. They can be made by children, adults and the elderly. There are no special skills required, just the desire to make a positive difference to the environment.
• One 2 litre plastic bottle. The same shape as a coke bottle. • One large stick, for poking the plastic into the bottle. • Collate plastic ready for poking: laminated paper, photographs, polystyrene trays, plastic fruit punnets, silvery packets (crisps, chocolate), PET trays, wax paper, food bags and supermarket plastic bags can be used.
• Slip your twisted waste into the bottle and poke down with your stick. • Fill the bottle to the brim with your plastic waste. This may take several weeks. • Weigh the bottle. An ecobrick should weight at least 500g to be at the correct density for building with. • Celebrate your completed ecobrick, but don’t get too attached to it! • Sign up to ecobricks.org and download the app. • Enter your location into the app and it will direct you to the nearest drop off point. • Alternatively create your own ecobrick community in your school, community centre, club, church etc. For more information on ecobricks please go to ecobricks UK on Facebook or www. ecobricks.org
Your first ecobrick is the most important and sets the standard for a lifetime of ecobricking. Substandard ecobricks compromise the quality of the finished construction. We have a step by step guide for you to follow which will ensure your ecobricks are of the highest quality. So let’s get started shall we? Page 40

A CALL TO ACTION Are you involved with a local school as parent, student, teacher or faculty member? If the answer is yes, then we implore you to start an ecobrick community within the school. Ecobricks can be used to create chairs, tables and a variety of garden furniture. With many schools struggling for funding, ecobricks are a great way of replacing old furniture whilst being environmentally conscious. Not only will it educate the students on the plastics crisis our planet is facing, it enables them to take action! We’d love to see your completed ecobricks so please do post photos on the S40 Local Facebook page.

Health
Coping. With the menopause. Words & Image: Shelly Chapman
Hi everyone, My name is Shelley Chapman and I’ve been asked to write regular articles for you, as I do talks on various radio stations, to groups and also help women, all over the world via social media and my book “Menopause Matters, How to Master the Menopause, Survive, Thrive and Feel Alive” get through the menopause as easily and naturally as possible. This stage of a woman’s life will happen to just about every female on the planet, so you’re certainly not alone. The problem, is that no-one talks about it and the help is sparse at best. That’s exactly what I found and I know how frustrating and worrying it can be. But not here… In this magazine, I’m going to cover all sorts of symptoms, as this is the first stage of the menopause (known as perimenopause), plus other aspects for you, because we’re not all at the same stage at the same time! So let’s get going… You may have been to the doctor to check that there’s nothing actually ‘wrong’ with you like the beginning of Alzheimers (you keep forgetting things), or you’re so angry all the time (he put the butter back in the wrong place in the fridge, again!), or you burst into tears for no reason! You might wonder if it’s the menopause but possibly be told that you’re too young, or not in the menopause yet and maybe be offered antidepressants. You know you feel different and to be honest, no-one knows your body better than you and this ‘what’s happening to me?’ stage can last over several years. So, what to Expect… In your late 30’s and 40’s, your Oestrogen and Progesterone levels will start dropping (this is called the peri-menopause stage) and start re-aligning. This is in preparation of your periods stopping and when you’ll get the most symptoms. This is quite normal and is due to your hormones changing. Your symptoms won’t all come at once, but one after the other as your body goes through this transition and it might surprise you, but if you Page 42
can get your head around the fact that you’ll go through the menopause and be as prepared as you possibly can be, it’s as effective as treatment or therapy! Just about every woman on the planet will go through this and Mother Nature will decide when it’s your turn. It’s just like puberty, but in reverse! Depending on how many, or few symptoms you get, how quickly you get them and how long they will last, is absolutely unique to you, so please don’t compare yourself with anyone else. You are unique – we all are and the way you approach, feel and manage this stage of your life is huge. You may need to take a look at your lifestyle and how it’s become, because a healthier and more active lifestyle will help combat the worst of the symptoms because it creates endorphins and these are your body’s natural happy hormones. So regular exercise, supplements and healthy eating can reduce a lot of your symptoms, keep you fitter and also help keep any weight gain down or to a minimum (did you know that your metabolism starts to slow down from 30 onwards?). So the sooner you start, the better, because your body works a lot better if you’re a happier person. If you’re sad, down and unhealthy, have you noticed that you seem to become ill and have more aches and pains more often? To be honest, how you deal with this stage of your life and the changes you make will have the biggest impact on how hard or easy it will be for you. Now, I’ve given you enough to think about and I’ll start covering some symptoms and natural remedies/solutions next time we talk, so until then, you’re more than welcome to join my closed Facebook group where you’ll get loads of help, advice and support straight away and I look forward to talking to you next month. Rotary Club - Chesterfield Supporting the 'Three Bedded Bays Project'
The Rotary Club of Chesterfield is delighted to support the 'Three Bedded Bays Project' at Ashgate Hospicecare, a £750k major upgrade of the in-patient bays to provide a more flexible, cost effective, pleasant environment. This donation of £2,750 is from the proceeds of Chesterfield Rotary's 2018 Eckington Classic Car & Bike Show.
Founded in July 2001, the Phoenix Concert Band was formed to provide adult wind, brass and percussion players the opportunity to play a wide repertoire of music in a friendly enjoyable environment. Concerts are performed regularly throughout the year, and weekly rehearsals take place at the beautifully refurbished Methodist Church in Hasland on a Friday evening, attracting approximately 40 regular players from a wide area, with a range of ages and professions. Always interested in identifying new players, the band is currently planning a workshop/play day to give people with all levels of ability an opportunity to try out and explore the enormous pleasure of playing music together. If interest is sufficient, this may develop into a new ensemble, which is an exciting prospect for both the band and community. Details of the band’s future programme and contact details can be found of the website https://phoenixband.net or on their Facebook page. If you would like to join the Friends of the Phoenix Band and receive regular updates of the bands activities, contact Mike Allen by email at mda@bcs.org.uk or call Elaine Rudge on 07970 291599 or John-Charles Tanner on 01246 201696 or 07710 065140.

Westfield Infant School Community Defibrillator Words & Image: Mrs Risorto (Westfield Infant School)
Last year on Valentine’s Day, the whole school got our ‘Hearts Racing’ to raise money for a community defibrillator. Following staff first aid training, including using a defibrillator, it was unanimously felt by the staff that having easy access to one would hugely increase the chances of saving someone’s life. This would benefit our whole school community on a daily basis, along with being accessible for our local community.
So far, we have funded two defibrillators, one sited inside Westfield Infant School (accessible for anyone to use from the community whenever the school is open) and another community defibrillator outside the Storrs Road community rooms (accessible 24 hours a day). Our next project is to raise money to site another machine near Old Hall Junior School. Having installed the defibrillators, the East Midlands Ambulance Service are going to run a training event on Thursday 21st March
To raise funds, we had a sponsored obstacle course; which truly got our hearts racing and tested our stamina! Everyone came dressed in something red too, as it was Valentine’s Day and we then linked this to our artwork to raise the awareness of keeping our hearts healthy. We were so overwhelmed with the support we received with the fundraising towards a school and community defibrillator. The feedback we had from so many people (parents, grandparents and local residents) regarding the project has been so heartwarming and positive. The grand total raised was a phenomenal £3307.20! at 2pm to be held at Westfield Infant School. The school will be open from 1.45pm, via the gates off Vincent Crescent. Everyone is welcome to attend from our local community who is interested in learning more about how to use the machines. A big thank you again to Westfield, parents, relatives and friends for getting behind this most worthy cause, which should go a huge way to increasing the chances of saving lives in our community.

Arts & Minds
Words: Simon Paterson Ian was viewing the art in West Studios when I bumped into him. We started chatting and it was clear I needed to tell his story. Back in 1997 Ian had a breakdown and suffered with serious mental health issues until events in 2008 lead to him experiencing what he recognised as his wake-up call! Ian was admitted to the Hartington Wing at the Royal Hospital on the psychiatric ward. At the time they had a day unit which was open to out patients. The day unit had an attached art room which patients were encouraged to use, to express their feelings as an alternative therapy. Ian was a regular in the art room and his occupational therapist recognised the positive impact it was having on his mental health. He was persuaded to register as a mature student on a two-year access art course with a clear goal of graduating from university. Following university Ian was involved in various mental health community groups, supporting and mentoring local artists and projects. Through his volunteering he’s found peace, stability and a passion for making a positive difference to the lives of others. He goes forward with a message of hope for those who are suffering, that through connection and expression, you can improve your health and wellbeing and live a full and rewarding life. Ian now runs his own community movement called Arts and Minds, where anyone is welcome to come along and express themselves through art, music, writing, anything that involves creativity. It’s a support network for people with mental health issues, social isolation, loneliness etc. Ian is himself a talented artist and has an exhibition at West Studios running from the 8 to 29 March. His art reflects his own personal journey, one of despair, hope, and identity. Arts & Minds is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm at 43 Bridge Street, Killamarsh. They are currently seeking premises to further expand the great work they do into Chesterfield town centre. If you are able to assist Ian please contact him on 07711 271770. Page 48

Garden Tips
M
id-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes; assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which could affect the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn’t directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year. Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed. Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint, too. It is the time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary too. If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there’s a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long. Seeds to sow indoors in March include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules. Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have. Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year - tying it up prevents this happening efficiently, and doesn’t look nice. There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again. The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them – there are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you’ll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas.
March Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
Page 54
Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem un-necessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right sort makes a big difference. We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like this say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two. www.s40local.co.uk
