Hi and welcome to our June edition, I hope we find you well. I’ve one word for this edition, business. There are so many small businesses doing everything they can to survive and so many people are ignoring them. I know many S40 Local readers love a local business but we need to share that love and encourage our friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to do the same. We’ve got chats with a whole host of small independent businesses; Chesterfield Escape Rooms, Maggie May’s, Birds Funeral Services, Big Jim’s BBQ Smokehouse, Un-hampered, The Coppermill Workshop and StraightCurves. A few of these are new business, people starting up when the pandemic has closed everything down. Hat’s off to them and ‘thanks for bringing your business to Chesterfield I say’, I wish them all every success. It’s also nice to get feedback and none better than an email I received from Sheila Cheesman of Holymoorside in response to our Spring edition. ‘Thanks Paul. I think it is one of the best. The articles highlighting local businesses are superb & so useful. I have emailed the Gardening Sisters.’ It’s so great to know that the things we do are appreciated.

Time for a bit of escape We catch up with Nick Hogan who's bringing a fantastic new experience to town, Chesterfield Escape Rooms. Words: Paul Chapman
N
ick Hogan is one Chesterfield chap that many people are very happy with. Why? Because he’s opening up Chesterfield Escape Rooms on 17 May and bookings are filling up fast!
escape room we wanted to provide and eventually chose rooms that have been played by over 30,000 people in the UK.
“Trip Advisor ranks these games as the number one attraction in their towns, so we know the people of Chesterfield will enjoy their time with us. We aim to deliver a fantastic customer experience and put a smile back on people's faces,” says Nick.
So, what is an escape room? It’s a game in which a team of up to six players work together to discover clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks in one or more rooms. The end game is to progress through the room to ensure you escape within an hour.
Chesterfield Escape Rooms is located on Soresby Street in the town centre above GHQ (Geeks Head Quarters) and Lily Pad restaurant. I caught up with Nick over Zoom to discover a bit more about his personal escape. “Despite the hospitality, tourist, and entertainment sectors being devastated over the past six months, I see a real need for family, friends and teams to spend some quality time together in a safe, clean, fun, exciting, and challenging environment,” explains Nick.
“Our intention is to reinvigorate a little bit of the town centre and bring to Chesterfield three new and exciting escape rooms, never seen before in this area. “We looked long and hard at the type of Page 6
Sounds easy? For many they make it look easy, but our personal experience is very different, when, as a family, we previously visited a room in the Lake District, and have to admit to calling in assistance after becoming totally stuck on one clue! We did manage to escape but felt like we’d cheated the system, I really can see how completing a room without any external help must be so pleasing. Maybe next time! Nick is new to the Escape Room world after spending a career in software sales and reaching a point where he was looking for a new focus. “I was spending far too much time away from home and family and took retirement in 2019. I relaxed, played some golf, trained as a tiler and did a few jobs before realising this didn’t mix well with my old sports injuries, then played a few local escape rooms and the seed was sown,” explains Nick. This is a long-term plan for Nick who is determined to make it a success. “We found a franchise operator that has been great to work with and started looking for ideal premises, we needed to be in the town centre, close to local hospitality

The Bank’ needs you to get back the family gold, ‘The Governor’ sees you and your team of paranormal explorers kidnapped when entering HM Greenslade Prison, and ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ needs her mischievous cats finding before she returns home. Can you complete the tasks in one hour and make it out?”
Nick was also keen to ensure the following local businesses got a mention who have worked tirelessly to get the rooms ready for the May opening; Abbotsbury Contractors, The Handy Pro Handyman and Services, Dalton Roofing, LGE Electrical Solutions, BRM Law, Destination Chesterfield, Derbyshire Alcohol Advice, JP Fire Safety Solutions Ltd, Indigo Hygiene, Dronfield Upholstery, Chesterfield Carpet Tiles and Nick also added thanks to anyone that has helped along the way he may have missed. Nick, in setting up the team, has worked with the Kickstart Program to offer important employment to local people. “It’s essential we support the local economy; and we have worked hard to find the right people for the positions. We’re excited to be a new addition to Chesterfield's cultural and hospitality sector. We’ve already established links with our neighbours and see Chesterfield Escape Rooms as part of a great experience,” says Nick.
So, after you’ve succeeded in your escape, call into the County Music Bar where Nick has established a partnership that gets you exclusive food and drink discounts on the day of your game (Note: you will need to show your game voucher), supporting and bringing together the nearby independent businesses.
The rooms are a franchise from successful Chelmsford based Know Escape who have designed and run their own games since 2016, and wherever they are, they are number 1 on Trip Advisor. “We’ve had our first staff training and people playing the rooms have come out buzzing. We have three rooms, Rob the Bank, The Governor and The Crazy Cat Lady which offer a choice for all, plus the option to revisit and complete each room in turn,” says Nick. “They’re family friendly, ‘Rob Page 8

FIRST HAND ESCAPE! As part of the essential staff training that Nick and the team have been undertaking we were lucky enough to be invited down as a family to sample thr 'Rob the Bank' escape room.
Nick and Annie (Nick's partner) were lovely, relaxed and friendly giving us just enough nudges to make us feel marginally intelligent, but without giving the game away entirely. We're no escape room experts, so the level of support offered was spot on. The aim of the room is to keep you occupied for your hour but also to ensure you have some fun and complete the room, and it certainly delivered for both of us on these counts! Our visit to the Chesterfield Escape Rooms came at just the right time, after a long lockdown it felt like a real treat to go out and do something together and have 'an experience' that didn't just involve another family walk!
It's clear that a lot of time and attention has gone into getting things right and if our visit was anything to go by, you can be sure of a fab time, what was also evident were the procedures they have in place to ensure they're operating a COVID safe environment. It was lovely to see the kids really get involved, take control and solve the clues. Thanks to Nick for bringing the Escape Rooms to Chesterfield, we even called in at Pizza Pi on the way home to pick up a takeaway! We're hoping to go back to try the other rooms at some point soon!

Out & About
Go Wild
But go carefully and legally! Text & Images: Jamie & Laurie
Page 12
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
With restrictions on holidays and people looking for new adventures we were interested to read Jamie and Laurie's blog that they sent us. They share with us their trip to the Lake District, where you can legally wild camp in some places. But if you are planning on trying wild camping please ensure you check out www.coolcamping.com for more info.
Y
ou may be wondering, can you camp anywhere? The general rule for wild camping is that you must have express permission from the landowner before you pitch up for the night. We always recommend that if you aren’t sure you’re in a permissible zone, you should check first, as you could be disturbing farmland or private property.
Wild camping is our escape and our way of feeling closer to nature, we feel wild and free, it’s a cheap and cheerful break for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rat race! We are Jamie and Laurie, a local couple with a passion for the great outdoors and photography, and we are super excited to share our adventure with you.
We planned our trip carefully and decided on a sunny Saturday to pitch on top of one of the mountains in the Lake District.
After checking the weather to make sure it was going to be nice, we set off on our adventure. We knew the top of the mountain would be the perfect place to watch the stars, the world go by and relax and unwind in nature. We packed two litres of water as the mountain is a steep climb and I pre-cooked a pasta the night before as carbs are a good source of energy and taste great cold. Jamie made sure we packed coffee (we cannot live without coffee) and milk in miniature tubs, we took our two man Gonex tent, two light weight regatta sleeping mats, Regatta sleeping bags and foil that goes under the sleeping mats to keep us warm during the night. If you are wild camping try and pack as light as possible, you don’t want to be carting a lot of equipment around.
We set off on our adventure at ‘silly o’clock’ from our home in Chesterfield so we could catch the sunrise at Derwent Water, and it
didn’t disappoint. We walked down to the Lake, no one was around, the world was still for a moment, just us with our cameras and a white silhouette appeared. It was a swan gliding in the mist so majestically. We were tired from our early start and long journey, but this made it worth it. We were mesmerised by its beauty against the backdrop and instantly felt at peace. We made our way to Great Langdale Campsite and the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel. The hotel looked lovely, a traditional pub to stop in for a meal and a bevvy for anyone that loves pub grub. We parked up and rested realising the walk ahead of us would be a tough one, especially with 20kg on our shoulders, mine was slightly lighter, Jamie’s was the heaviest and he resembled a pack horse! The weather was fantastic, the sun was shining bright with just a slight gust of wind, perfect weather to walk in. The walk took us three hours. I would recommend walking poles as it is tough on the knees, it is quite steep, long and tiring especially if you have bags on your shoulders, but the views are stunning on the way up. You can see most of the Lake District from the very top on a good day, even better at night as there’s very little light pollution so the stars shine fiercely! We awoke to the sunrise, a burst of pinks and purples lit up the sky, it was a warm morning. We gazed on in awe…
When clearing our tent up we made sure there was no trace left to respect the farmers and the land. On our way down we had some lunch and watched the farmers herding their sheep with amazing skill and agility down the mountains with their sheep dogs. We were hot and bothered on our way down so decided to bathe in the flowing river to cool off. Refreshed and full of the wonders of nature, we laughed and began to plan our next adventure in England’s green and pleasant lands. This was a fantastic walk and to stop the night was even better. If you are planning on following in our footsteps, always remember to take a map and plan your route, wear appropriate footwear and clothing and have a great time soaking up the beauty of the lake district. Stay safe, Jamie and Laurie.

hen Laurie was loitering around the tuna sandwiches in the canteen at Chesterfield on a daily basis, Jamie knew there was something fishy going, and he was right. It turns out she had taken a shine to Jamie who works in the catering department. So, Jamie asked her out and five years later they are the ‘picture perfect’ couple, known on social media as _jl_photography_ and we are pleased to feature them on this month's front cover. I caught up with Jamie and Laurie eager to find out what inspires them to photograph our beloved back garden, The Peak District Firstly, I just want to say how stunning your photos are, we (S41 and S40 Local Magazine) are very impressed and it was an easy decision to place one of your images on our front covers. The majority of your photos are taken in the Peaks, do you have any favourite spots that you can share with our readers?
Jamie: We go up Snake Pass and to Lady Bower a lot. Laurie: It’s really quiet and peaceful up there. The views are incredible. We also like going to Alport Castles, which is three large mounds that tower over the valley. From a distance they look like castles. Did you know that Tom Cruise is currently filming in Eyam?
Laurie: He’s been out filming in the Peaks before and the Yorkshire Dales, very cool! Were you both into Photography when you met, was it a shared passion from the off? Laurie: I always wanted to get into photography, but never bought a camera because I didn’t have anyone to do it with.
Jamie: I was into it a little, but I only had a tiny camera, then Laurie bought something decent. Laurie: I bought one from CEX in town, nothing special, but from then on, we were out every weekend and loved it. It’s great that you both share a love for what you do, your Instagram page is fabulous.
Laurie: We’ll have to do you a free print, Simon. Please Mention S40 Local Magazine
Page 17
Cover Photo That would be excellent, thank you. So, what camera do you use now?
Jamie: We both have the same cameras, the Cannon 6D Mark 2 which is why the photos look half decent! We are still very much learning; we learn something new every time we go out. Laurie does most of the editing. Laurie: I enjoy the editing process and tend to use Adobe Light Room. I’m getting a lot better at it now, it takes practice and patience. Out of all your photos, which is your favourite? I suppose this is like asking a parent who their favourite child is, they all have one, but would never disclose that information! Laurie: We are really struggling with this one.
Jamie: The boat house at the Lake District is one of my favourites (page 16). It looks like you are in the middle of nowhere, with nothing around for miles, but you actually have a B road just behind you! Where do you recommend our readers go for the best sights in the Peaks? Jamie: Bamford Edge, you can see for miles.
Laurie: Baslow Edge for the Highland cow! If you are lucky, you may even see a hare! Jamie: The Ridge, Mam tor (page 16) Castleton area, amazing views! Laurie: It’s not very popular there, good shout.
Page 18
We have a three-year-old little girl, so give us a couple of child friendly suggestions, please.
Jamie: How about a day out in Bakewell and then you head down the Monsal Trail. It’s as flat as flat can be so very child friendly. I don’t suppose it’s only 100 metres long? I have problems trying to get her to walk to the car without complaining! Laurie: Haha, there are some nice coffee shops on the way! I’m sold! Last question; if you could travel to and photograph anywhere, would it be?
Jamie: It’s got to be Iceland, there are just so many different photo opportunities, beaches, glaciers etc. Laurie: Even the clouds are different, but not forgetting the Northern Lights. I bet every amateur photographer would love to photograph it! I really enjoyed chatting to you both and can’t wait to see your images in print in our magazines. I’m sure our readers will love them just as much as we do. See you in the Peaks! If you want to see more of Jamie and Laurie’s photos, or even buy a print, you can see them on Instagram (make sure you use the underscores).

was a coffee shop run by Donna and in the evenings a real ale micro pub run by Stephen and Cheryl who have now retired.
Walton Dam Nation has always been a busy hub on Breckland Road at Walton shops for the last four years but was run as two separate businesses. By day it
“It’s now a single business, it’s always been busy, but we feel has the potential to offer more, and we have some plans in place that we hope to share soon that I’m sure will go down well with food lovers in the area.”
aggie Mays, previously Walton Dam Nation, is under new ownership and they simply can’t wait to meet you.
Walton residents for 20 years, Andy and Donna Vaughan have been serving up great coffee since reopening on April 12, not to mention fabulous cakes, snacks and drinks in their outdoor space, and by the time you read this (Ed: and all things going to plan) they’ll have space open for indoor meet ups.
Page 20
“We knew the business was going to be available early in the year,” Andy explains. “Donna and I expressed an interest in buying it outright, and after a few conversations we were excited to get our hands on the keys in April this year.
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
Andy has a background in local government but recently took the opportunity to step aside from the corporate world. He clearly loves the new business and when we met was happily greeting each customer and ensuring their time at Maggie May's was enjoyable.
So why Maggie Mays? Sadly, Andy lost his mum, Margaret, to COVID in November last year, “she was a social, fun loving lady and it only seemed right that we name the business in her memory, she would have loved it,” adds Andy.
Andy jokes, that it’s a ‘lifestyle business’, one that works around their life, and not life around the business. “It’s important that everyone is welcome”, he says. “We have over 4000 people living within a few minutes walk of the micro pub and coffee bar and over time it would be fab to have served them all a drink, but please don’t all come at once!” I agree with Andy, it’s a relaxing friendly place, you’re made to feel welcome and there is a sense of community, a place to meet friends or call in on your own for a chat and a coffee without any pressure.
Andy has plans for a Community Fun Day, where everyone gets together, he is discussing various ideas with Ashgate Hospicecare for a community fund raising day on the August Bank Holiday, just one of a number of ideas he has for the months ahead to ensure we have a laugh and put some large smiles on our faces. Andy and Donna have certainly made the most of the local business community already, the refurbishment was done by Walton based architect, Josh Botham, Joe McGuigan Carpentry, James from JT Electrical, and flooring from Kevin at Ideal Flooring, good friends of Andy and Donna. The shelves are stocked with local produce, Brampton Brewery on tap and bottled ales, Ashover Brewery, Peak Ales, Silver House from Staveley to name just a few plus a few of the more well-known brands to keep all drinkers happy.
“Going for a coffee or a beer is a social event,” explains Andy, “people have really missed the social side throughout lockdown, it’s great to see people face to face, community is so important, we get to know each other, support each other and look out for each other. That’s what we hope to bring from our business, everyone is welcome, and you’ll get the same warm greeting if you call in for a coffee and cake at 11am or a real ale at 7pm.” Maggie May's is open 9 to 9 Monday to Saturday and 10 to 7 on Sunday. Pop in and see them; there is no need to book a table and be sure to follow them on social media to help keep up to speed with special events... and as always, tell them where you saw them, S40 Local. Business Update
A Safe Pair of Hands For almost 110 years Birds Funeral Services have provided a service from their home in Holymoorside. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Birds Funeral Services
Page 24
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
T
he Birds family have operated their funeral business in Holymoorside since 1913 and today it remains a truly family business, now in its fourth generation we caught up with John Birds and Liz Craig (father and daughter) over a cup of ‘virtual coffee’.
“We’re probably one of the oldest remaining businesses in the village,” says Liz. “I can’t think of any others that are approaching 110 years old!”
John has been running the business since 1975, shortly after he closed the building side of things to concentrate solely on funerals. “When the business started, my Grandfather, John (Senior), was a carpenter and he established the business as a wheelwright, joiner, builder, and funeral director,” says John.
“In the early 1900’s the local carpenter had the skills to make the coffins, and before that the wheels for the carriages, so it also fell on them to act as the undertaker; the phrase ‘undertaker’ simply means ‘to undertake the arrangements.” Today Birds offer a 24-hour service, and it falls to Liz to pick up most of the business, after she decided to move out of her teaching career in the early 2000’s to move into the family business. And it’s John’s son who, although living and working in Oxford, is also involved in the business looking after the IT requirements.
Birds pride themselves on offering a caring service, they can take responsibility for all aspects of a loved one’s funeral care, planning the service, arranging cars, flowers, and whatever requirement you may have. They have a private Chapel of Rest on site on Loads Road, Holymoorside and a small function room should mourners wish to take refreshments following a service. “The fact that we are based in Holymoorside enables people to hand their loved one over to someone who is part of the community, and of course we offer our services across Chesterfield and the wider area,” says Liz. The way funerals are funded, like so many things, is changing and Birds are able to provide ‘Golden Charter Prepaid Plans’; a
Funeral Plan is an easy way to pre-arrange the funeral you want and pay for the funeral director's fees at today's prices, either as a one-off payment or monthly, spread over three years. A plan can help save your family the worry and expense, helping make things easier for your loved ones when the time comes. ‘Prepaid plans are popular now,” explains Liz. “Prices associated with every aspect of funeral services are creeping up so it’s great to be able to protect some elements and safeguard yourself from these increases. “We are happy to talk to people about their required plans, we’re always pleased to put together a quote based around specific requirements. “We are a member of SAIF, a national organisation ensuring we operate to the highest standards among independent directors."
The team at Birds have had a challenging year, arrangements have been done over the phone, they often haven’t met people until the day of the funeral and with reduced numbers allowed to attend it’s been hard for all the families we’ve dealt with. “The staff at Chesterfield Crematorium have been so professional over the year during the pandemic, really supportive and we’d also like to pass on our thanks to them,” says Liz. So, if you want to know your loved one will be well cared for, or you want to make your own plan and remove the stress your family will have to go through, give John or Liz a call to get a quote. With just two years to go to reach 110 years, Birds are a safe pair of hands at a time when you need someone caring and understanding. Meet Jim, Matt and some fabulous food. Words: Paul Chapman Images: BJBBQS
I
feel like I’m missing out on something this morning, as I sit down outside Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse in Clay Cross with owners James Fisher and business partner Matt Page, the beef brisket from the freshly stoked smoker smells great, just a shame it’s eight hours away from being ready!
Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse is the brainchild of two friends which came together after one simply said to the other ‘do you fancy taking on Charlie’s Bar in Clay Cross and opening our own steakhouse?’ “Once it was clear it was a serious proposal and not a joke,” said Jim, “I was in.”
Jim has been a chef for almost 20 years, he learnt his trade at Chesterfield College and like many chefs has worked his way around many wellknown local establishments before family life and kids arrived.
“Until now I’d worked in smaller restaurants and rented a kitchen in the barn at the Chesterfield Arms, until I started working for myself, I opened a sandwich shop, and we took on a catering van so we could do artisan markets, weddings, events etc. “I started to develop an American style, smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, fried chicken etc. I really enjoy these types of dishes; people love them and it’s so satisfying to be doing something people enjoy eating.”
I was enjoying what I was doing, but when the text arrived it felt as though the time was right for a change. The pair recognise the positive change that’s taking place in Clay Cross, an old mining town is now home to hundreds, if not thousands of new residents as the Avenue site is redeveloped and high-quality housing goes up around the town. “We signed the lease in January this year and opened on 12 April with about 70 outdoor seats, we are serving food that’s British and very local, it’s all COVID compliant and feedback has been Page 28
fantastic,” says Jim. “It’s essential to us that we support local suppliers, our meats are from Owen Taylors, who are proud to boast that all animals are from a 30-mile radius, our Aberdeen Angus comes from Stanfree Farm, we get out fruit and veg from Smarties in Claycross, Ginspired supply some of our gins and spirits, ice cream comes from Smiths Creamland Icecream and we strive hard to support local suppliers and businesses in everything we do. “This has already proved useful, a customer recently had quite specific dietary needs that related to antibiotics used by the cows from which we source our meat, I was able to talk directly to our supplier and ensure that they were good to go for our customer.”
'feedback has been so positive. Our food is being so well received, the St Louis ribs are going down great' Matt is studying a degree in business and stepped away from full time employment to partner with Jim. “I love a spreadsheet, so it’s a great partnership, I’m happy with books, plans and figures, Jim knows his food and between us we plan where the business is headed,” explains Matt.
“Clay Cross has been impacted by the lockdown; the snooker hall that had 25 tables hasn’t survived so we’ve got rid of the function room and put in a full-size snooker table with match cloth, we already have three local teams that will be using the space once we can provide an indoor service. The room has its own bar, dart board and will provide space for locals to meet away from the hustle and bustle of the food areas downstairs.
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
“We have Nigel Bond, top professional snooker player from Darley Dale lined up to hold an exhibition match, so keep an eye out for this.
“We’ve had some fantastic support in getting this new business off the ground and must pass on our thanks to the Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce, in particular for an exciting venture we’re working on that may see our products in a premium retailer, all I can say is watch this space!” Matt adds. Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse has been a no expense spared refurbishment, all seating has been replaced, every surface has been made over and the place retains the feel of a rustic pub but is a 100% family friendly restaurant. The carvery area came with the pub so the team will be offering a Sunday roast as soon as they are able, the outdoor space is heated, and there is an indoor area perfect for bands to play, so live music is already being scheduled.
Jim and Matt are clearly looking forward to the months ahead, lots planned, man v food challenges, events, music, specials, family days plus Jim also plans to offer a range of BBQ rubs and sauces to take the Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse taste home … plus their own smoked cheeses to accompany your burger!
So how have the first few weeks been? “We’ve not had one bad word; feedback has been so positive. Our food is being so well received, the St Louis ribs are going down great, we select ribs with just the right fat content so it renders down as they slowly smoke, I have to admit they are really tasty,” adds Jim. “Our beef brisket is selling well and so is the Mighty Meaty Burger.
“We can’t complain with the feedback we’ve had. There is still lots to do but our approach to sourcing premium products is paying off, the slight extra we pay is worth every penny if the smiling faces are anything to go by.” Check out their social media for all that’s happening at Big Jims BBQ Steakhouse, book a table and go pay them a visit and be sure to tell them you saw them in S40 Local! You can find Big Jim’s BBQ Steakhouse on the main Clay Cross High Street, (A61) on the far side of the town at the traffic lights on the left-hand side. fter an exciting launch it’s been a busy month at Un-hampered. Started by a couple of companies that have a passion for our town, S40 & S41 Local and Defeye Creative. Phase one is a directory of Chesterfield’s fabulous independent businesses, the shops, restaurants, food suppliers and so much more, all in one place.
Initially we had around 90 businesses listed and today (it’s a moving target so please bear with us) there are around 130.
I’m going to say it again, but I can’t thank Matt, Phil, Tom and Steve, the team at Defeye Creative, enough for the fantastic job they’ve done, creating something that's easy to use and looks like it belongs to the businesses.
Only problem is with designers and creative types, they’re never happy with what they’ve done and always want to improve! So, it might surprise you to find that we’re already at version two. If you’ve not checked it out, please do, and use it to find a new local business, step away from those large corporates and give some love to the small guys. Any business these days need a social media presence and Un-hampered has seen people following its Facebook and Instagram pages increasing slowly. Instagram was helped by our ‘Fancy a round on us?’ giveaway that saw people telling us at which great independent venture they’d like to meet up with their friends and who they’d take. Congratulations to Ellie Middleton who will find a £50 bar tab at The Junction bar - her chosen destination. Look out on Instagram for pics from Ellie, hopefully raising a glass to independent businesses! Thanks to everyone who took part and if you want to be in with a chance of snapping up further giveaways be sure to follow us on socials.
We also managed to get a mention for Unhampered and Chesterfield’s independent businesses on BBC Radio Sheffield! I was called by Saria, a researcher for Toby Foster who wanted to know about Un-hampered, why we’d done it and what we can do to encourage people back on to Chesterfield’s High Street! I had a great chat with Toby and if you fancy a listen visit Facebook, either Un-hampered or S40 Local where you’ll find an audio clip. Phase 2
We’ve discovered that not every independent business fits the 6 categories we have, so we’re adding Services, Outdoors & Leisure, Health & Wellbeing and Entertainment & Activities.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be adding businesses to these to make the site even more useful to even more people. Phase 3
The original idea for Un-hampered was an online shop that brought Chesterfield's independent businesses under one roof, with the simplicity of shopping at a large department store or supermarket, the difference being they are all from town! We’re aiming to have an early trial for this at some point soon, and after the positive response we’ve seen to Un-hampered so far, we’re excited, VERY EXCITED!
Stay in touch with what we’re up to and follow us if you’re not already. Until next time.

The Coppermill Workshop Meet Ross Clark, master craftsman Words: Simon Paterson Images: The Coppermill Workshop
L
ocal man Ross Clark has always dreamed of turning his passion for woodcraft into his full-time occupation and with the support of his wife Sarah, that dream is finally becoming a reality.
Ross, better known as The Coppermill Workshop creates beautiful, bespoke pieces of furniture out of upcycled wood and copper. Ross's environmentally conscious products are all hand-made in his workshop in the evenings and at weekends.
"I've been wanting to make the jump to working for myself for a while now and with orders coming in and the business growing, I'm pleased to say that from the end of May I will officially be working full-time on my own venture," says Ross with a smile.
With everyone spending a lot of time at home recently, Ross has seen an increase in orders for many of his products, particularly those related to alcohol. Fancy that! "My hand-crafted wooden, garden wall bars are proving extremely popular and are my biggest seller. They are a bit of a talking piece when entertaining and some of my customers have sent me some great photos of them in use. They really took off when the Daily Telegraph featured one of them."
Ross has turned his hand, very successfully, to make a variety of homeware pieces such as shoe racks, bedside tables, shelves and has even made a wall-mounted trophy stand for a boxing glove.
So, yes, he does take requests and is always up for creating something unique, personal and special for his customers. Ross has been very mindful of where he gets his supplies from and believes in supporting the local economy, sourcing most of his wood from a company in Barrowhill, which he stains in a variety of colours including granite grey, lightly steamed beech and silk grey. "When I first started, I tried using varnish, but it didn't give me the high-quality finish I was looking for. Now I use a wax which not only protects the wood making it more durable but gives it a smooth, shiny finish, which I think looks great." It was great chatting to Ross about this exciting new chapter in his life and I have no doubt one of his pieces will appear in our home very soon, or maybe on the garden wall outside (insert winky face here). @thecoppermillworkshop thecoppermillworkshop

he last 18 months have been challenging and it's great to see everyone focused on getting back to normal but personally and professionally the pandemic has enabled me to do so much that otherwise would not have happened. Like many business owners it’s very hard to step out of the day to day running to develop anything new, and spending time at home to establish a good work life balance never happened. The pandemic has enabled this for me, don’t get me wrong, it’s been hard as well, particularly when my husband was working in intensive care but in a way I appreciate the opportunity it's presented.
Personally I have had the chance to completely redesign my garden, get an allotment, and unpack the last few boxes from our house move in 2018. Rekindling the joy for gardening that I hadn’t had time for since moving to Chesterfield in 2012.
Professionally, teaching online has enabled StraightCurves to reconnect with anxious learners who were unable to visit us in person, and teach throughout the UK, and even expand into the USA! It has helped us to run our after school clubs too, as previously the logistics for parents getting children to the studio after school has been a barrier, but now they can enjoy a cuppa while the children create and enjoy interactive learning from home. It's also enabled us to start running 'crochetalongs', our second is a few weeks from finishing
and another on its way later in the year! I love designing patterns as it fulfils the creative in me that misses working in architecture, my past life.
We've had the chance to work with the lovely Helen Rowan to photograph our crochet kits. It’s like Christmas morning seeing professional photographs of something you created, so exciting! We now have a small and slowly expanding range of kits to purchase including our chunky cowl, robin decoration, cute comforters, bubble bag and our 2021 crochet-a-long blanket. We've also taken the opportunity now with reopening slowly approaching, to have a good old clear out and reorganise at the studio, we are even hoping to get a paintbrush out too now it’s a little warmer! We hope to fully reopen in September and our in person courses are bookable through our website. There will be a few sessions before the summer, but mostly we are focusing on getting all our postponed sessions completed to start afresh in September. NB: we will be closed for the whole of August to maintain our-work life balance, after all, it works in Italy so why not Chesterfield!

Take nothing but photos Leave nothing but footprints Text: Chris Livings (Plastic Free Chesterfield) Illustration: Chris Livings illustrated by KIP Creates Image: Adobe

Only organic things biodegrade, and this still depends on weather and location, non-organic matter only breaks down into smaller particles and never disappears.
The sanctuary the great outdoors has provided, a safe place to go, needs to be looked after and respected as mother nature does for us.
Firstly, take a bag, I’m not talking about plastic bags either, a good rucksack is an investment and is endlessly useful, so if you can, get a good one and look after it. Fabric carrier bags are useful too, especially if you’re likely to pop into any shops, so have a couple with you too.
ince the start of the pandemic there has been a rise in people enjoying the great outdoors, we are very lucky in the UK to have many national parks and woodlands to get out and explore. Unfortunately, our natural environment has taken a hit, not just footprints but sadly, litter has been a problem, whether it’s a lack of bins, awareness, education or even care, there needs to be a change.
Some statistics, the below shows how long it takes for items to breakdown: • • • • • • • • • • • •
A paper towel: 2 – 4 weeks Apple core: 1 – 2 months Banana peel: – 2 years Cigarette butt: 10 years at least Steel Can: 50 years Crisp packet: 75 – 80 years Plastic straw: 200 – 500 years (now banned in the UK) Aluminium can: 200 – 500 years Plastic bottle: 450 years ‘Disposable’ Nappy: 550 years Fishing line: 600 years Chewing Gum: Centuries
Page 40
There are very simple ways you can reduce your impact on nature, here are a few ideas to get you going.
A packed lunch is a great start, you are more likely to create something much more appetising and genuine in your own home, rather than a meal deal in a supermarket. It doesn’t need to be a full meal, just take snacks, unpackaged and home-made if you can which cuts out the packaging.
If you’re out and about because you take care of your body, perhaps take some fruit, it’s organic and biodegrades but some items can take a long time, banana skins! If there is no bin shove it in the side pocket of your bag, if you don’t have a side pocket take a container. Please don’t throw it in the bushes, it takes a long time to disappear and looks unpleasant!
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
Any type of reusable cutlery is fantastic to take with you, useful for your packed lunches and takeaway foods, now is the time to buy a ‘spork’!
The easy solution is to carry a container with you for the butts, ‘pocket ashtrays’ are simple, reusable and responsible.
Bottled water in shops might have been fresh once but it’s now trapped in plastic bottles, besides it’s only the bottle that you’re paying for, water is free(ish)!
Hand sanitiser is great, it saves lives and prevents the spread of the virus but the convenient little bottles are having an effect of the environment. They are finding their way into the litter hall of shame along with face masks. Consider using bigger recyclable bottles of the stuff and disposing of them correctly or use the same bottle and refill it, you can purchase refills from Steph’s Sustainable Stuff, search for ‘disinfecting hand rub’. This option cuts out the unnecessary plastic packaging and contributes to shopping locally.
You’re going to want to take some sort of drink with you too, water is an obvious choice but you want to make sure it’s just water. Get a stainless steel or BPA free water bottle so you’re not drinking any toxic plastic particles, found in shop bought water bottles.
It’s a nice idea to take tea or coffee with you to warm you up, a good flask or travel mug will bring you much happiness and also cuts out spending unnecessary money and waste. If you take your travel mug with you to a coffee shop, there’s a good chance you’ll receive a discount for cutting out the packaging, bonus!
If you’re a smoker, cigarette butts are litter! They’re tedious to pick up and quickly mould themselves into the floor where they will stay a decade at least.
Now by this time in the pandemic you should have a reusable mask, its more financially friendly and buying single use masks must have become a bit of a chore. So, make sure you’re not caught out without one if you need it, have a few at home and keep a couple in that trusty backpack of yours.
So now you’re ready and responsibly embarking on your outdoor adventures! With all of your ecofriendly belongings which are going to save you money and the world at the same time, pretty cool!

Brookfield’s Summer Production School productions at any school are a special part of the calendar. At Brookfield, we look forward to these performances, as they are a real celebration of the arts and gives us a chance to reconnect as a school community. As lockdown restrictions begin to slowly ease, it means we can finally enjoy events in person and not through a computer screen. This July, Brookfield is hosting a summer production full of performances - including dance, music, drama, and art - which will all be linked to the works or themes of William Shakespeare. All performances will take place in the round (audience seated in a circle around the stage) which help ensure the audience have a front row view of the show.
The audience will also be asked to bring picnic blankets and deck chairs, bringing a Proms in the Park feel to Brookfield. This event will be a celebration of work that has taken place throughout the performing arts department. Theatres have been closed for more than a year because of the coronavirus. Now, more than ever, we need to support the creative arts and therefore we hope that you can join us for the summer production at Brookfield. Phoebe Spacie
Opening up Sports Leaders Brookfield year twelve students are given the opportunity as part of Brookfield’s Enrichment Programme to undertake the Sports Leadership Qualification at Level Three. The qualification is nationally recognised and enables students to lead activities independently from the age of eighteen; it also allows students to gain UCAS points which can be used to help boost their university applications later on. These students - due to easing covid restrictions - have been able to now start their course where, in order to gain the qualification, they are expected to spend two hours after school each week, complete independent learning and give thirty hours of their time to the volunteering aspect of the course.
In the course, students get the opportunity to learn how to develop their leadership skills, how to lead and plan an event, how to deliver a safe session and about planning, leading and evaluating activities for children, the community and people with disabilities. This opportunity tools students with transferable skills such

as communication, problem solving and adaptability.
Whilst it appears that the world is a little bit more open each week as covid restrictions ease and we can return to a once familiar normality, so do the opportunities available to the students who have accepted this one of the Sports Leadership Qualification; once passed, this allows them to participate in leadership roles in activities in the community. Without it, they wouldn’t be able to access these; but they can also use it to enhance their CVs and
applications to open further doors for themselves. It feels refreshing to see such things taking place knowing how they will be able to use this chance to tool them afterwards; after so much closing with lockdowns in the last year, it is perhaps only natural that new opportunities and re-openings do feel so optimistic and hopeful. Let me tell you about the miraculous changes in my daughter Jessica! A year ago knowing Jessica was a bit behind I took her to Jo to get help with her English and Maths… Well the biggest changes in her now are far more profound and longer lasting than just catching up on her education levels! Her new development is life changing and will see her through the rest of her school work and lifelong learning.
Jessica is a different person. She is more confident, has an increased self-esteem and is very positive towards problem solving in her work. Before she was frustrated: she shut down, avoided work, was negative and constantly telling me she was ‘rubbish’ at school. We expected Kip to sort that out and they did! They are as good as everyone says they are and the move from negative to positive we sort of expected. What we didn’t expect, and what is so miraculous, is that now Jessica understands that she can control her progress, learning and ‘cleverness’. She has grasped the concept that she alone is in control through her input into learning; she can decide how high, how fast, how far she wants to go. She now has so many strategies to turn to if she can’t do something first time that she is confident enough to stop, take her time, try another strategy and then go on to succeed. If she is still wrong she is happy, yes happy, to ask for help. She sees her mistakes and lack of being able to do something as a positive step. She doesn’t expect to know everything but knows that she can find out anything she needs to know to move forward. I know I am rambling a bit, but if you could see the differences in her that I can…
One strategy Jo taught her was with complex division. Jessica knows her times tables somewhat. She can’t recite them all, but she knows enough
to write down the ones she does know then uses addition to fill in the blanks. Jessica realised that if she is dividing by 8 for instance she can write down the 8s tables and then it all comes easily to her. She isn’t worried about not being able to do it straight off, but just takes her time. As she says, ‘’I get there in the end, mum’’.
So how did this amazing, miraculous, turnaround begin for Jessica? She went into the first lockdown as a year 5 student and used Jo’s flexi lesson system. She had the work to do at her own pace. In the second lockdown she did online face to face sessions and used the ‘ little hand’ on her computer to wave if she needed Jo’s immediate help. In her last assessment she has gone up from being 3 years behind in English and Maths to only 1 and with the speed she is now progressing in a few more weeks she will have fully caught up. Jessica has always had some learning difficulties which is what makes this change in her so marvellous. Before she couldn’t write a full sentence fully punctuated, now she can. Before she couldn’t do basic arithmetic - like subtraction with borrowing, times tables and complex adding up for example. All sorted now! Sometimes in life someone just comes along at the right time, for Jessica that was Jo at Kip. We thank her so much and know that when Jessica goes to secondary school in September she will be at the same level as her peers and have an equal chance in her academic life. I’m a very proud and grateful parent, thanks to Jo and Kip

Working to protect your legal rights! Text: Chris Collard The Derbyshire Law Centre, based at 1, Rose Hill East, in the basement of the Town Hall, is the largest such law centre in the country! I've been a trustee of the Derbyshire Law Centre Management Committee for over ten years and would like to update you on the work we do. Our aims are: ‘To provide and increase the provision of quality specialist legal advice and representation in the following areas of social welfare law: • • • • •
Housing and Homelessness Employment Debt Immigration Discrimination
Additionally, we undertake necessary project work as funding becomes available and provide an accessible assessment and signposting service to all enquirers / clients. Put simply if we can’t help, then we’ll direct you to a person, organisation or charity that can! Always seeking new sources of funding we simply want to offer and protect the job security and outreach of many of our key workers. In present circumstances project funding is difficult but we continue to do all we can to be able to offer our services. It's a challenging existence! COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the work we do, but even so, the pace of enquiries and expanding work load has not slackened.
We also need to extend awareness of the rights and remedies available to both individual and communities and to continue to retain our well trained and highly motivated staff. To get a feel for what we do we have featured some cases we've undertaken recently.
A successful outcome for the Housing Unit for Mr. SY of Amber Valley, was a feature of hard work from Lisa, one of our lawyers. A council that had initially and repeatedly refused to provide temporary accommodation finally did so after legal pressure was applied. This was also a case where the client’s safety could only be secured by such a move. The housing team works well with other agencies and local councils to provide a holistic service for clients. Page 48
Homelessness: A client who was street homeless, was offered permanent accommodation with the local authority but did not have any belongings. The Law Centre secured £260 for items such as a duvet, towels and crockery. An application was also made to a homeless prevention fund for a microwave, meaning he could care for himself and maintain his tenancy.
Debt: Mrs. KR contacted the Law centre over rent arrears and her private landlord was threatening to serve an eviction notice. Additionally, our client had mobility, medical and mental health problems and she didn’t know where to start. We sorted out her debts / re payment priorities and eventually via pro rata payments, were able to prevent any further action being taken. She was even able to save a little to! Immigration: A Latvian national who lost his job, suffered mental illness and became homeless. We were able to liaise with his support worker to provide evidence that he had lived in the U.K. for 10 years and secure indefinite leave for him to remain so that he could obtain housing support and benefits.
Employment: Mrs H was due to return to work after sick leave due to a serious mental health condition. We helped make a flexible working request, but come lockdown, childcare commitments meant she couldn’t return to work. However, we were eventually able to secure the flexible work request and furlough was continued. This protected family income, reduced stress and improved our client’s mental health. Discrimination: A client was made redundant ostensibly when during Covid 19 his workplace closed. All other staff in the client’s department were furloughed. Our client believed that this was a case of age discrimination. After considerable negotiation, he was reinstated, paid all he was owed when out of work and then placed on furlough.

his is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered.

1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your currant bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too!

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted. JULY
Mon 4 Jul: Fancy 'Forest Bathing'? Part of the Chesterfield Area Walking Festival. Join Holly for a sensory experience around Linacre woods. Shinrin Yoku - the Japanese practice of 'forest bathing' - uses all of your senses to experience the forest around you. Forest bathing has been shown to lower stress hormones and boost the immune system for up to a month! The walk is suitable for adults and older children and will be taken at a very leisurely pace. The main focus is on relaxing and enjoying the experience and really getting to know the environment around you, not walking a great distance. Some parts of the walk go off the main trails and into the woodland, so it may be muddy and uneven underfoot and there will be some gentle up and down-hill sections. Please dress sensibly for the weather. We will not be walking fast so if the weather is cool, please bring extra layers of clothing. Please bring hand sanitiser with you. Organised by Nature for Life. See FB Event: fb.me/e/hIZm4tuoK (or tickets through Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre). Sat 31 Jul: Plastic Free Festival Our first big event, a Plastic Free Festival with stalls of businesses selling products that help you to reduce your single-use plastics. Alongside this there will be performances and food and drink. 10am to 5pm at Chesterfield Central Methodist Church and will be a fantastic family day out! Please contact us if your group/ organisation would like to get involved. If you do want to get

involved it has to either be about reducing single-use plastics or offer a performance, so have a think and let us know! Also, we are trying to crowdfund the purchase of reusable cups so can your group / organisation help us at all please? It would be hugely appreciated and as a way of gratitude if you donate £25 we can put your group name on the side of the cup that's 300 cups - great advertising! FB: @PlasticFreeChesterfield

Green Fingered Artist
Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) Celebrates 30 Years DVA, which has created a network of more than 300 organisations with the aim of making the voluntary sector stronger and more joined up with each other, has reached their 30 anniversary after forming in 1991.
The organisation specialises in supporting health and wellbeing related voluntary and community sector organisations.
Westfield Allotment Association plotholder, Neil Jackson, has helped brighten up the area over lockdown. Neil is a member of Chesterfield Art Group, and over lockdown, took to ''getting out of the house a bit'' and began to paint on the storage shed at the allotments.
Then with the wind behind him, just carried on. Eric Loe, Chairman, commented "it brings a smile to us all as we go down to work on our plots." Check out Neil's work below or look out for it as you pass.
Charlotte Repton, Project Manager at DVA, said: “If you were going to sum up what DVA does, we are a charity which supports other charities – but there's much more to it than that! “Healthy communities really are the key to why we do what we do. The voluntary sector is vital to delivering specialised, responsive support in the community, enhancing what is offered by public services such as the Council and NHS. I think the pandemic has made that more clear than ever.”
DVA supports the voluntary sector in a range of ways including regular forum meetings, they also lead on specialist Mental Health Liaison Services, which creates a network of mental health support organisations across the county and deliver ‘social prescribing’ where, rather than medication, individuals are prescribed services and activities in the community to help improve their health. Find out more about DVA at:

Crown's 'Can Back' Scheme
The 'Can Back' scheme sees Crown Decorating Centres (CDC) recycling any empty can from ANY branded manufacturer, at all of their retail outlets.
Over lockdown many people have spruced up their homes with a new coat of paint, but do you still have those empty tins around? If so, CDC on Chatsworth Road will take them back, provided they have no Page 58

more than one centimetre of dried paint in the bottom ... that's half an inch in, and lids are removed.
The metal tins are recycled and the plastic ones are recycled into benches and plastic goods. This initiative applies to any branded tin you have in your shed, garage or hidden away. Call in and hand over anything you have hanging around and tell them S40 Local sent you!

Tools with a Mission (TWAM) Chesterfield Words: Bryn Garland Tools with a Mission is a Christian charity enabling people to earn a living and support themselves and their families. In many countries people have few skills, little education and no means of making a living. A switch from aid dependency to self sufficiency is impossible without some form of help. TWAM started 30 years ago and has been operating in the Chesterfield area since 2015.
It has provided that help of becoming self sufficient by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. Through a team of volunteers in Chesterfield started by the late David Sanderson through St. Thomas’ in Brampton we were able to send up to four full van loads a year of tools and equipment to help transform many lives. The tools are sent to Coventry for refurbishment and then onto Ipswich for kitting as we send
complete trade kits, such as groundworkers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, mechanics etc. We also send out sewing and knitting machines and haberdashery packs to help set up tailoring businesses. TWAM as a whole shipped over 2000 sewing machines in 2020.
The requests for tools come through our partner organisations in Africa which also provide the training and mentoring to the people so the tools can be used effectively to learn the skills of the many trades which become their lifelines.
So we encourage you all to look in your sheds and under the stairs to see if you have anything that you no longer use but could transform someones life in Africa.
Please email: alans@twam.uk or telephone 01246 229683 and for more information about the work of TWAM check out the web site.

Ringing for HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh Bells in over 52 places across Derbyshire, church bells plus handbells and a mini-ring were rung in memory of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Much of the ringing was tolling a single bell (due to COVID restrictions), usually the largest bell, half-muffled (a leather cap is placed on one side of the clapper so the bell sounds alternately loud and soft - traditional for funerals and on Remembrance Sunday). In normal times all of the bells in each tower would have been rung half-muffled for HRH. St Peter and St Paul at Old Brampton could be heard across the fields with most of the ringing taking place at noon on Sat 10 April and prior to the National Minute of Silence at 3pm at the start the Prince's funeral on Sat 17 April. Calling all Future Campanologists
Bell towers across the county hope to recruit new people to ringing as soon as all covid restrictions are lifted. It's a fascinating activity for both young people and adults, a mental and physical challenge, you don't have to be strong or musical, and people of all faiths and none are welcome. If you'd like to give it a try please email: learntoring@derbyda.org.uk
Friends of Tapton House ask... 'CAN YOU HELP?' Tapton House (below) is a grade 2 listed building standing in the beautiful grounds of Tapton Park. It was gifted to the borough by the Markham family for the benefit of the residents of Chesterfield but has stood empty for some months now.
Friends of Tapton House are appealing to anyone with a soft spot for Tapton (old Taptonian or not) to join us in our attempt to lease the house from the council and breathe new life into it. Ideas for creating a community hub include galleries, workshops for local artists and craftspeople, exhibitions to display and sell their work, opportunities for creative and supportive education and lecture rooms in which to run courses. It would be a great place for therapists, counsellors, conferences, adult education, community/parent and child groups, a tea room and displays relating to George Stephenson, local history and the history of the house and grammar school.
For more information and to volunteer (please!) email friendsoftaptonhouse@ gmail.com or go to our website friendsoftaptonhouse. wordpress.com. We look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in joining us. Page 60

ello again Spireites. Well, let’s kick off with a little dé jà vu. Last month I started with the old saying “football is a funny old game” and it certainly still is!
I had already written this article before we played (and lost) at home to Bromley. The game before this was a goal-less draw against Boreham Wood. But now, well since last night in fact, we lost again at home against FC Halifax Town…and this got me thinking. Comparing the last 5/6 years to now is easy. The club is better in many ways than it was under the previous owners/management. If you’re a Chesterfield fan, the difference is as obvious as the sun in the sky. But for the non footy readers flicking through this magazine, who have decided to stop and read this (as the photography clearly is very eye catching ) let me summarise. The club is now owned by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust and run by fans of the club who see the future of this great club as long term and not just as a short-term money investment. The key word here is “investment”.
Back in August 2020 the new era of the club began and with it came some risk. It was the first club to be owned by a Trust in football. The club needed to account for every penny and invest their limited funds wisely. So, three months later the club announced our new manager James Rowe (37) a pretty much unknown manager with limited first team experience, recruited from the league below us.
Fast forward five months and we are in the play offs. We have a new work ethic and more importantly, the board back James to bring around change and a brighter future. To date since November there has been around 17 new signings. This is also thanks to the new chief scout, Paul Lemon, also recruited by the Trust to bring in the players of the future. Page 68
So, back to the present climate of the Technique Stadium.
Like any manager in any new club the boss needs time to settle in to adjust and find his feet which does involve results not going our way. James to be fair seems like a top manager and from what I hear from staff at the ground he is also a top bloke too. I haven’t heard a bad word about him. Before each game James can be seen watching the squad warm up on the pitch. He also waits on the pitch to fist bump the players as they leave the field, whether we win or lose. This to me shows the man's character. They're all in this together, as a team, as a unit and I for one like that. On social media (since last night's loss) CFC fans continue to have their opinion about his team selections, tactics and formations and that is every football fan’s right. It would be boring if everybody agreed. So, my point.
Be thankful for where we are now. Sat pitch side photographing the Spireites and James it is clear the team and the boss are passionate about getting back to League 2. But after last nights result, the second home defeat in a “Rowe” (sorry, pardon the pun) we need to restock and look at where we currently sit in the National League which is 7th, in the play offs! I for one didn’t expect to be in this position six months ago. If we get promoted through it then that’s bonus! No, next season will be our year. The fans will be back, and we will surely be favourites to win the league outright. Given how the current climate of football is at the moment with the European Super League shambles, winning and earning promotion back to League 2 will be worth it! That’s what real football is all about in my book! COYB’s!

love it when we get contributions that pass thanks onto others for their actions.
A poem arrived from Ken Franklin from Brampton who was inspired to pick up his pen (or turn on his pc) and pass on thanks to Terry Caton and the team at Londis, Chastworth Road. Ken explained, "Terry has been doing sterling work throughout lockdown with a brilliant home-delivery service supported by a team of volunteers and reinforced by the everhelpful staff in the shop.
"A fairly recent development is the adoption of brown paper carrier bags to replace as many as possible of the lime green plastic carriers. It is a contribution to the war on plastic and an encouragement to recycle. "Reflecting on this helpful development led to the writing of the poem."
Our thanks to Ken for highlighting Terry's great approach to the community around him, and we'll add our personal thanks.
Brown paper bags
It’s brown paper bags for groceries now, Brown paper thick and strong.
We must conserve, flag our concern,
And the Londis shop on Chatsworth Road,
will gladly show us how.
At plastic bags we thumb our nose, We must avoid pollution,
Stop throwing rubbish in the sea Take greatest care at every turn
and hope, in time, it shows.
Protective wrapping is a craze Too readily accepted,
It is thrown away without a thought To be never used again
and then the whole world pays.
Brown fields and green are overfilling No one likes rubbish-burning
We’ve closed our eyes for far too long; Adrift in our self-made darkness,
the golden goose we’re killing.
The paper bag will make a start In helping change our ways,
We must learn its lessons full and true Like multiplication tables
that we’ve taken to our heart.
The paper bag we can use again Then put it with the compost, Feel satisfaction at this turn
But always take the greatest care
with paper bags in rain.
