Intro
Hi and welcome to our November edition.
You might have noticed that it feels a bit heavier than usual, that's because it's our penultimate edition before Christmas and we have Part 1 of our local and independent Gift Guide.
We've put together a few suggestions for festive gifts, all from local independent businesses and many of them are made or sourced locally. We talk briefly in the intro to the guide about the power of buying locally and the impact it has on our economy right here in Chesterfield. If you start thinking about it now, you can avoid the need for next day delivery and funding the big corporation. Let's think about the environmental impact perhaps, a meal out at a local restaurant or local service might be better than a pile of stuff people didn't really want ... or need! I'd also like to introduce Maisie Cook and Jack Jerram, students who have joined us temporarily for some work experience. They have both written interesting pieces for this edition, I hope you enjoy their input. I'd also like to thank them for being so enthusiastic in their approach.
We love feedback - especially when it's positive, this is what one of our readers said this month! 'Thanks for carrying on with the magazine during difficult times - always a good read plus lots of useful information.' Hopefully you'll feel the same.
Enjoy and we'll catch up one last time before Christmas - get out there and support local this Christmas. Paul 07764 801080 paul@s40local.co.uk

THE LOCAL
CHRISTMAS
Gift Guide: Pt1 "Lets walk for our gifts" Words: Paul Chapman Images: Chesterfield's Independent Businesses
A
s I write it's just 11 weeks until Christmas Day. Each year I say 'I'll get things done nice and early this year' and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, the reality being that I find I've got no wrapping paper on Christmas Eve as I gather the random bundle of stuff I've pulled together over the last few days!
My wife's not like me. Planning starts early, gifts for family and friends bought from local shops over the counter and never a delivery in sight - in fact it could be said that you don't need next day delivery when you go to a shop and buy it - you get to take it home the same day!
We have some great local businesses in Chesterfield and it's our job to do all we can to support them. People moan about the state of the high street but then order everything online. People moan about parking charges but are happy to pay £4 for postage.
Page 6
This year, let's take a walk for our gifts. If you want to cut down on the leg-work take a visit to www.un-hampered.co.uk to find a selection of Chesterfield's fabulous independent businesses. We've been working on this with Defeye Creative and have some great plans for the New Year ... watch this space. Once you've got a good idea of the places you want to shop, pick out a place for lunch and you have your day planned.
Not only will the day be enjoyable but you will have done your bit for the local economy. Remember every pound you spend with an independent is likely to end up being reinvested back in a local business, and if every resident of Chesterfield spent £20 on gifts locally this Christmas that would plough £2.1 million back into the local economy. What's not to like?

Redcoats to Rubies Meet Laura Jo & Adam from Adorn Jewellers Text: Paul Chapman Images: Adorn Jewellers
A
dorn Jewellers, situated in the heart of the historic Shambles in town, love to offer something different. Their strapline is ‘independent, individual and inspirational jewellery’ and in a nice way … the same can be said of owners Laura Jo and husband Adam, independent, individual, and inspirational people!
I caught up with Laura Jo to discuss life in the Shambles and how they’ve managed to pick up so many awards over the past years. “We opened our doors in 2010 in the middle of the recession,” Laura Jo opens with. “It was a tough choice, but we thought if we can make it succeed now then the future will be bright.
“I worked in a major jewellery retailer with branches across the UK and people were constantly asking about the pieces I wore at work. I have always sought out independent and unique pieces and it got me thinking. Was there an opening in the market for a shop that bought these fabulous independent makers under one roof?” Promotion beckoned for Laura Jo, but it was this that lead to the decision to go for it. “I wanted to go it alone so went about finding a number of suppliers whose products felt right to stock. These guys couldn’t sell through larger retailers as they don’t mass produce but their high quality, strong designs and reasonably priced products were spot on. Page 12
“We always want to be unique, and we strive to have pieces of jewellery that you’d notice across a room, ‘independent, individual, and inspiring’ pieces for people who want something different.”
Laura Jo and Adam haven’t always been in the jewellery business; they met in Butlins, Skegness - not on holiday but when Laura Jo worked as a Redcoat and Adam was a lighting technician. They both had a desire to travel and see the world, so took a job on Ocean Village Cruises. ‘For people who don’t do cruises’, here they were at their best, making people feel good and entertaining them.
A small green shop front in the Shambles, but with arms that reach across the globe. “It’s this that’s centred around all the roles,” explains Laura Jo. “In the shop we want people to enjoy their experience, it’s not just about selling a piece of jewellery but about them becoming friends, someone who will call in again and again. Over time we often see generations of families shopping with us as they wear their pieces and news spreads.” Today Laura Jo and Adam are joined by Gandalf, their Cairn Terrier, whose job title is ‘head of security’!

Business Intro Laura Jo took me back to their very first day, the worse snow in years fell and they had to dig the shop door out. “Adam was still working in theatre at the time, and I had a bit of a panic, 'what have we done? I thought.' However, we’ve now been in business for 11 years and we are still finding new customers calling in, and our number of loyal customers continues to grow.”
The location was important to them. They sat in coffee shops and cafes and watched how people use the Shambles. It’s a cut through between two busy streets between the High Street with M&S, and down to Central Pavement, a great spot with a high footfall and a strong chance that people will notice their enticing shop window full of glittering jewellery.
I was surprised that they only have about twenty makers who they work with. “We’re quite strict about who we will take pieces from, they really do need to stand out from the crowd,” says Laura Jo. “We need them to be right, we need to get the right reaction to their work, it’s a bit of an art really.” Adorns jewellery is mainly silver but they do have gold and other precious metals, gemstones include, sapphire, rubies, blue john, agate, labradorite, diamonds and others. “Our jewellery is easy to identify, we get people say it’s like being in a secret club, they spot others wearing pieces and give a casual nod. It’s lovely to know people feel this way about what we do. I feel that every piece we have has an owner, occasionally we get pieces that seem like they’ve been in the showcase for a while, but I don’t worry, it’s just that its owner hasn’t been in yet. These pieces always find an owner in the end.”
So, COVID and lockdown, any comments I ask? “If you look back to my very first Facebook posts they were all text – no images!” laughs Laura Jo. “Since then, things have changed a lot, although we are first and foremost a traditional high street shop and that’s the experience we sell. “It was a step change in our use of social media through lockdown. We started up our Friday Night Live sessions, 7pm on Facebook we do a 30-minute live video stream and then the same on Instagram. These have been great fun, we talk through our personal jewellery collections, show our new pieces, discuss how to style with your jewellery, last week we cast the next James Bond film after Daniel Craig's last Bond film! It’s a bit of fun that has allowed those customers who often call by the shop just to say hello to stay in touch with us. One customer told me she found the back editions and watched them all … that’s a lot of Laura Jo for anyone!” Page 14
“Our online shop features a selection of our pieces and has been busy throughout lockdown, but we always have so much more to offer in store. “We love it when the guys call in. I like to think they’ve already got it right if they’re in a jewellery shop, they’ve done the research online, selected the right piece for the occasion and are in and out with military precision … almost James Bond like,” Laura Jo adds. Adorn is a great asset to our town and have won multiple awards from both the Chesterfield Retail Awards and the Derbyshire Times Business Excellence Awards, they are extremely grateful for everyone who voted for and supported them. Laura Jo was keen to point out that it may sound cliched, but it really does mean the world to them, the tears on the award pictures are testament to this!
They are also selling their products across the world. Customers have called in whilst on holiday and continue their relationship with Adorn through the website and social media channels. A small green shop front in the Shambles, but with arms that reach across the globe. It was clear that the experience is what makes Laura Jo tick. “Recently a customer called in to pick up her wedding rings, she was really looking forward to seeing them and when she did it made the whole wedding seem real after months of planning and dreaming, the emotion flowed,” says Laura Jo. “This is why we do it, it isn’t just jewellery, it’s an emotion, a partnership for life, a new home, a first baby, a special celebration or whatever reason you choose, and that piece will always remind you of that.” If you’ve never stepped foot in Adorn Jewellers, perhaps it’s time you did. There’s a big day in a couple of months and after a couple of years of uncertainty they have some great pieces to show people how much you care.
Laura Jo adds, “we’re here supporting people through life, some say that when they wear our jewellery, they are putting their armour on.Together we can help each other through the day.” What a great way to think about what you do. 7 Middle Shambles, Chesterfield S40 1PX www.adornjewellerschesterfield.co.uk @adornchesterfield

Autumn Walks & Winter Warmers Words & Images: Matt Darken (Ginspired)
I
t’s time to enjoy the beautiful cascade of golden, red and brown leaves that the wonderful Derbyshire countryside provides us with in autumn. Here at Ginspired we love to celebrate these rich, warming colours and flavours in our drinks too. After an autumn walk picking sloes and blackberries, a good G&T is a deserved treat!
Tarquins British Blackberry and Whitby Bramble & Bay are high quality examples of blackberry gins. Featuring sweet red fruits and earthy herbal tones, they are beautifully balanced and delicious to enjoy on cosy evenings by the fire. For the perfect serve, try mixing with a premium tonic (elderflower flavour if you prefer), a couple of fresh blackberries and a sprig of fresh rosemary to garnish. As the nights draw in, bonfire night is on the horizon and the all those gorgeous sweet and smokey aromas fill the air. We’re talking smoked rum, bonfire toffee in a glass! Three Tides and Burning Barn make intensely smoked rum - charred applewood, rich sweet molasses and burnt treacle. Fierce and complex yet somehow velvet smooth.

Match 20ml of smoked rum with 20ml Amaro, 10ml Campari and 10ml of pure maple syrup for a delicious smoked rum cocktail.
After being chilled to the bone on bonfire night, we’re surely in need of a seriously good winter warmer. An indulgent and sophisticated single malt whisky is the only choice. The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve and Caol Ila 18yr are brimming with decadent, rich and complex character.
The multi award winning Dalmore is matured in American oak bourbon barrels, Oloroso Sherry casks and Cabernet Sauvignon barriques to create a whisky bursting with vanilla, cinnamon, red fruits, orange zest and dark chocolate - a dram to truly savour. For more tasty autumn tipples and festive treats, visit Ginspired in the Market Hall to browse our wonderful selection of 600+ delicious drinks!

The Knife Angel Words: Press Release CBC Images: Robert Nixon Betts If you haven’t seen the famous ‘Knife Angel’ sculpture you’ve only got until Tuesday 26 October, currently on display at Rykneld Square (near the Visitor Information Centre) in Chesterfield town centre.
The impressive sculpture, made from over 100,000 seized blades, was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying our critical need for social change. Not only does the Angel act as a catalyst for turning the tide on violent and aggressive behaviour, but it also acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives that have been lost through these violent and thoughtless actions.
Created in collaboration with all 43 police forces, the Home Office, Anti-violence groups and hundreds of families who have been affected by knife crime, the monument is a symbol of the nation’s intolerance to violence and aggression. It was created by the British Ironwork Centre, by sculptor Alfie Bradley to highlight the impact knife crime has on people, families and communities.
For more details follow the local Safer Neighbourhood policing team on Facebook @ChesterfieldTownCentreSNT and Twitter @ChesterfieldSNT A huge thanks to Robert Nixon Betts for the fab images of the sculpture on this page and also this edition's cover.

New, Local HR Support Services Meet Bernadette Curley from newly established Lyndon James HR Consultancy. Words: Paul Chapman Image: EKR Pictures
A
t some point the opportunity for change presents itself to us all; we have a choice to ignore it and carry on as usual or grasp it and take a risk. The latter can be scary but if you prepare correctly and make the jump, it can be the best decision you’ll make. Bernadette Curley has done just that and set up Lyndon James HR Consultants.
I met up with Bernadette to find more about what she has to offer and who her target clients are. “Many SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) and small businesses simply don’t have the time needed to ensure they adhere to all the necessary guidelines, or it may be that they know they need to, but think they can’t afford the services of a HR professional. This is where I’m hoping Lyndon James HR Consultants will fill the gap,” explains Bernadette. Bernadette has an impressive track record in HR across her 20 years in the business. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (UK), holds MCIPD status and has experience as a HR generalist for both private and large corporates in the UK, Europe and stateside, working in all disciplines, including, manufacturing, healthcare, NHS, vehicle repair, marketing agencies etc etc. Page 26
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
“It does feel strange to be stepping away from the corporate world but I’m so passionate about what I do and want to offer my services to local businesses. The world of HR legislation and compliance is becoming more and more complex and it’s so difficult for a small business to stay abreast of developments and changes to ensure they remain compliant with the changes.
and employee engagement, and more importantly, cause health and wellbeing issues.
The typical services Bernadette is providing include, contracts and onboarding, handbooks & policies, disciplinary & grievance procedures, recruitment, absence management, HR audits & reviews, including HR GDPR, general advice and support, training and coaching, help with restructuring and redundancy, maternity leave and much more, plus she has access to payroll, health and safety, pensions, P11D services etc from partner businesses.
“The average cost of recruiting someone can run from £3k to £5k. There are so many hidden costs associated, so businesses want to get this right first time. It does feel that over the last 18 months processes have been so informal, and it’s not always as simple as just offering more to find the right people,” says Bernadette.
“I believe some feel that they can’t afford the support they need, or it may be that they can but it never gets to the top of the priority list. Why should good HR just be for the large companies? Things don’t always require an expensive financial outlay to ensure that the correct practices and legal compliances are in place; not having these established can leave businesses exposed, especially today when employees may be fully aware of their rights.”
“It’s things like that from April 2020, new employees should have a contract including policies and procedures by the end of their first day of employment - this used to be 2 months. Failure to make employees aware of their terms of employment may result in a claim of unfair dismissal should any issues arise, but how many small businesses know this and do it?
“Are businesses ensuring that employees who are continuing to work from home, have had the correct risk assessment of their home environment to ensure it's fit for purpose? People really shouldn’t be hunched over the kitchen table or squatting on their beds! This can affect productivity
“People think that HR is just about ‘hiring and firing’ but there really is so much more to it and this is where I can help,” says Bernadette. Bernadette’s husband, Oliver, runs Curley’s Products, so she understands how a small business works, how they are placed financially, and the way they need the right people at the right time etc. “Even with my knowledge, we too find it difficult to find the right people but knowing the process and how it works helps remove some of the mystery, I’m not a headhunter but I can help run effective recruitment campaigns. Often with any business it’s about the company culture and finding someone that fits this - often far more important than on paper experience and a great looking CV!
I was picking up that Bernadette had really enjoyed her time in corporate HR but her desire to offer excellence locally was showing through, she really does care. If you’re the owner or decision maker in a local SME or small business looking for professional HR support, give Lyndon James HR Consultants a call. Bernadette can offer packages and support tailored to your business and in the long run, will take the stress out of your HR issues, and as always, please mention you saw her in S40 Local! HOW TO BUILD A FINANCIAL PLAN Mark Jones, Managing Director of Jones & Co.
Building your own financial plan sounds quite daunting, right? Well, it really isn’t! If you’re prepared to invest a little ‘thinking’ time in putting a plan together, you’ll find it so much easier to manage your money in the long-term. What’s more, the sooner you have a plan and specific goals in place, the sooner you can make a success of your financial future. At Jones & Co we work with clients to create bespoke financial plans and there are three key areas to consider – this is the thinking time! Everyone can begin to plan their financial future by creating a plan, but it’s our job to turn your plan into a reality. Having an Independent Financial Advisor on hand to discuss your aspirations can really help you to focus and understand what’s important to you. What goals would I like to achieve? As with most things in life, building wealth takes time and effort. You can’t expect to have enough money in the bank to either stop working or head off around the world after a couple years of saving and investing, unless you win the lottery of course!
plan to work out how much you will need to achieve the retirement you want.

My Running Diary Part 1: Lounging in Lockdown to Running with the Wind Words & Images: Jack Jerram
I
t was June 23rd 2020, my Lockdown 18th birthday and Day 93 of a whole new world! Boris Johnson had cancelled school, except for children of essential workers, as well as my A levels and the prospect of what this meant for my further education at university, was weighing heavily on my mind. I’ve always been skinny and not prone to putting on weight but I felt sluggish due to over-eating and one too many fast food take-aways. I hadn’t used the hour outside suggested for exercise by the government but the night of my 18th – the start of adulthood – I decided to take responsibility for my mental and physical well-being.
Competitive by nature, I was really missing playing matches at my tennis club and badminton with friends. The tennis club had recently opened again but restrictions meant that balls could only be handled by the server and close contact at the net was to be avoided; it just felt too restrictive and badminton courts were still closed. I wanted to take up a sport to fill the gap that was both competitive and independent. Recently, I’d watched a tv show based on an Anime novel called, Run with the Wind. It was about a boy who wanted to rekindle his passion for running after a knee injury ruined his chances of competing at the Hakone Ekiden race. This passion and Page 38
dedication for running resonated with me, so much so, that I wanted to try it. After all, if I could no longer compete against others then I would challenge myself. On making my decision, I was eager to get started, however, thoughts of embarrassment plagued my mind. I felt intimidated. What if others saw my poor technique or heard my gasps for air? The feelings of inadequacy spiralled until I felt like a fraud for even attempting to run.
So, I slept on it! My mind was racing throughout the night, thinking of how to run without others watching me until I had a realisation, looking outside my own window! I would use the night to conceal myself! The next evening, I headed for Holmebrook Valley Park. I waited until dusk and set off on my first run. It was not pleasant! I ran 2.3 miles, the route I had planned for myself, and had to stop 5 times. The time taken was 26 minutes and 43 seconds: I logged it on the app, Strava – I now had a time to beat, the challenge had begun! Arriving home, I was exhausted, in pain and couldn’t move for an hour but I now had incentive and felt a sense of achievement. I continued to run every 4 or 5 days and gradually started to replace my equipment to improve my performance. First to get the chop, was my lanyard slim-line bag containing my phone; it obviously bounced

Wellbeing
around on my chest as I ran so it was replaced by a phone armband. Next up was a better running top, I was getting by with ordinary t-shirts but I needed a more light-weight, breathable top to stop me overheating. Then I replaced my trainers. Once I knew that running was for me, I invested in a pair made especially for the sport with cushioned soles. And finally, I bought calf compression socks to stop my shins feeling bruised after a run.
As August began and my A level results loomed ever more closely, I began running every day. Pent up anxiety dispelled as I ran with the wind but more often than not, the still heat of the summer. Running became easier and easier, my times became better and better. The effects on my mental health were considerable and positive. Research suggests that physical activity triggers a release of dopamine and serotonin which can improve mood. Dopamine is often called the ‘happy hormone’, a primary driver of the brain’s reward system. It spikes when we experience something pleasurable and for me, this had become running.
A levels results secured a place at university to study English Literature, I was happy and excited for the future but a little nervous about COVID and what this meant for lectures and studying. I continued to run and feel the benefits; it had become a routine in my daily life. Then, on September 16, I made my fastest time – 16 minutes and 21 seconds! This was ten minutes and 21 seconds faster than my starter time back in June. I was buzzing. I felt the benefits as soon as I started playing badminton with the university team: my cardio had improved significantly.
Try as I might however, I couldn’t beat my best time; I couldn’t even match it as the months flew by. I tried to recreate what I ate, how I slept but to no avail and although I still loved running, I was starting to stagnate a little. I needed motivation which led me back to where this all began. Re-watching Run with the Wind the following January reminded me of how the characters were able to run their twelve-mile sections in the Hakone Ekiden. It was through their strict marathon training. I never considered marathon training, after all, I could barely run a year ago but now, I wanted a new challenge.
Pre-running Jack before he decided to get active again.

R
educe. Reuse. Recycle. The same three words we’ve heard knocking about since the beginning of time. We all know cutting down on our meat consumption is the way forward, filtering that little bit of chicken nugget-disguised Quorn into our everyday meals to make it seem like less of a drastic lifestyle change. We all know the detrimental effects of using a plastic carrier bag for a pint of milk and some apples and then chucking it in the bin, whereas carrying our bright orange Bags for Life into the supermarket feels like we are doing our bit to save the burning planet, or rather, it’s the 10p plastic bag fee that fuels this healthy habit! We all know glass goes in the black box; cardboard, plastic, paper, tins in the blue bin; and food waste in the caddy. Much like an army regiment, we routinely file our unwanted rubbish into their designated compartments. But now, a new kid is on the block.
Slow fashion. As its name suggests, it revolves around the notion of fast fashion - buying and throwing away clothing that has been made and sold cheaply - but switches it into a more positive initiative.
Slow fashion can be embraced in a variety of different ways. To ease you into it, you may choose to give your local charity shops a visit. Whilst mooching round the Air Ambulance shop in town may smell vaguely like your grandma’s wardrobe, do not be put off, as I can assure you there are some real gems to be found in these wonder emporiums. Then, as you exit the shop, ecstatic and joyful with your £3 Bon Marche satin shirt (a particular favourite purchase of mine), you are hit with the greatest feeling of all - pride. You can give yourself a big pat on the back, for simultaneously saving the planet AND donating money to a worthy charity - go you! The only downside: when your 85-year-old grandma proclaims that she’d ‘quite fancy borrowing that blouse sometime’, you just have to smile and wave, content with the knowledge that, although you may look like an OAP, at least you’re a cool, environmentally friendly one. Other ways of going about it can prove far riskier. This method may be best left to when you’re home alone, just in case. Making sure to look left and right before you depart from the safety of your bedroom, dash quickly into the danger zone. You have arrived. Throw open the great wooden doors and peek inside, assessing the situation before you: six plaid shirts, two pairs of oversized jeans and a flat
cap, just as you suspected. You should grab them quick, before they arrive back. Rush back to the safety of your room. Mission complete. In all seriousness, if you couldn’t tell what I was describing there, raiding your parents’ wardrobes is a great way to be sustainable.
Although all the high street shops lead you to believe the latest fashion trends are being created right now, this is actually a lie. Those knitted sweater vests that are on the front page of every fashion magazine? They first became popular in the 1930s, before my grandma was even born, and remained a staple well into the 1980s, so chances are you’ll find one of those in your parents’ wardrobe, and you don’t even have to go anywhere for it ... apart from jeopardising your life by completing the trickiest stunt of all time, obviously! Slow fashion also values fair treatment for the workers who manufacture your clothes. Whilst an online order a day does seem to keep the sadness away, it doesn’t do any good for the labourers working tirelessly at machines. Behind some of the major, most well-known clothing giants of the 21st century, lurks a dark truth. Last year during the pandemic, reports claimed that some employees of the major brands were being paid a shocking £3.50 an hour whilst working in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, and something tells me this wasn’t just the case during Covid times.
Buying from more ethical companies doesn’t have to be challenging. Just a short walk into the town centre and you will find H&M, which offers an impressive Conscious Products collection, including all your staples such as jeans, jackets, and t-shirts. Venture into Sheffield and Urban Outfitters offer a Vintage & Renewal range, preowned and repurposed clothing sitting alongside new products. Chesterfield can also boast Gorilla Garms, a vintage and branded clothing business on Vicar Lane. What I’m really trying to convey is, slow fashion doesn’t equate to outdated, uncool clothes, and they most certainly aren’t difficult to source. Simply being aware of the slow fashion movement is the first step, so there you go, I’ve helped you with that. Now, pay a visit to Oxfam, pick out a secondhand M&S jumper, a pair of navy-blue chinos originally from Gap and you’ll be the coolest, most sustainable, cat in Chesterfield!

The Rhubarb Farm Family Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Rhubarb Farm Rhubarb Farm in Langwith is a social enterprise. Established in 2001, it supports a diverse mix of people from age 11 to 82 in a variety of ways.
Helen explained, “everyone who comes here is a ‘volunteer’ and we have supported and unsupported volunteers. Supported volunteers tend to be kids who are struggling in mainstream education or people with learning difficulties or disabilities. Unsupported volunteers are people who may have issues with drug and alcohol misuse, from probation, have mental ill health, older people or people who are unemployed. “We currently support around 50 volunteers throughout the week with 15 to 20 people volunteering each day.”
The farm is primarily focused on horticulture, and growing fruit and vegetables that are sold in the farm shop or as part of the cropshare scheme where customers pay £5/week for a veg bag.
Volunteers get involved in all aspects of the farm; gardening, caring for animals, learning skills to live independently, including working in the community café that opens once a week and serves a meal to isolated or vulnerable adults.
It’s difficult to sum up what it does, but this is what probably also makes it successful, the support offered is flexible and aims to meet the specific needs and preferences of the individual volunteer. Helen Heath, volunteer co-ordinator explained “what’s different about what we offer here is that there’s no limit to how long people can come, it’s not a 12-week programme, it’s for as long as it’s needed.” Chris, one of the volunteers has been coming to Rhubarb Farm since 2001 and has seen the farm evolve from a field filled with brambles to the productive and extensive farm today with the farm shop, community café, training rooms, admin buildings, multiple poly tunnels, an area for
animals, chickens, donkeys, a pony and bees and so much more. “Everyone here is always helpful. I’m doing my ASDAN qualifications in independent living skills, I’ve been learning to cook with Mel and recently a slow cooker - they’ve got me a slow cooker cookbook that I’m using,” says Chris. Josh, age 23, came to Rhubarb Farm as part of the government post-COVID Kick Start Programme aiming to get people on universal credit into employment with 25 hours paid work a week. Josh explained “I was quite nervous and struggled to come at first, but I enjoyed it so much that I volunteered to come unpaid for extra hours, I now do four or five days a week and really look forward to it, it’s calming and not stressful. Being at Rhubarb Farm has been so helpful and I’ve just got a job in landscaping which starts next week, I wouldn’t have got here without Rhubarb Farm.” Neil has been coming to Rhubarb Farm since 2015, “I was out of work and wanted to give something back when I started. I believe in the philosophy of volunteering. I find Rhubarb Farm inspiring. During lockdown the food bags really helped me and my mum. Mum recently passed away and I’m grieving and struggling with noise from a road I live near, being at Rhubarb Farm is calming, it’s an antidote to the stresses in my life.”
I asked Helen how many people can get involved as volunteers and whether there were spaces. “We have limited numbers of volunteers, but things change all the time as people’s circumstances change. If Rhubarb Farm sounds as though it could help someone, they can contact the farm and we'll see if it would be suitable for them.” As a charity, Rhubarb Farm also welcomes donations, that could be monetary, or good quality garden tools, building supplies etc. If you would like to offer support please give them a call.
Rhubarb Farm is in Langwith and people often need to be able to find their own way to the farm, but there is a minibus available with limited spaces and set pick-up points – it heads into Chesterfield twice a week.
If you’d like to see the farm for yourself – they’re running a Monster Mash Halloween Event on 23 October (prebooking required) and a Christmas Market on Sat 4 and Sun 5 December 2021. You can also visit their shop on Fridays between 10am and 3pm and Saturdays 10am to 1pm. If you go on a Saturday, you can ‘pick your own veg’ from the seasonal produce available and pay at the shop. Charity
Charity Champions Each edition we are sent press releases from people across Chesterfield who are doing great things to raise money for the charities they support. Typically, each is inspired to take up a challenge in response to personal circumstances. This month seemed exceptional with me receiving a high number of requests to help, I’ve briefly summarised each below. Please feel free to help these guys in their efforts if any of the causes are dear to you.
Breast Cancer Awareness Officially October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Abi Motais from Barepots will be doing her annual charity raffle to raise awareness for breast cancer whilst raising funds. She will be raising money for @coppafeelpeople, a charity that raise awareness in innovative ways giving young people the confidence to check their boobs regularly and correctly.
Abi says, "1 in 8 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime so I think it is important to educate yourself and remind others to get to know your bodies by checking regularly to ensure it can be caught at an early stage." Raffle tickets are £3 but please donate as much as you like for a chance to win a beautiful ceramic mug from the Autumn collection. Please see: bit.ly/barepots
Support Dogs Paul Gosney, business development manager at City Taxis, and one his close business contacts, Tony Dent from B&B Vehicle Contracts ran a Virtual London Marathon on Sunday 3 Oct. They picked their own route and finished at Support Dogs base at Dronfield Woodhouse. For details of Support Dogs and donations see: bit.ly/citytaxisupportdogs
Ashgate Hospicecare North East Derbyshire District Council has been bowled over by the amount raised for its Chairman’s charity appeal. Page 48
Holymoorside Bowling Club staged an afternoon of fun to raise £2,113.43 for Cllr Martin Thacker’s chosen charity – Ashgate Hospicecare.
Cllr Thacker, said: “The bowling green provided a wonderful focal point for an event which was extremely well supported by the local community.
“I am grateful to Holymoorside Bowling Club for their hard work and staging an amazing afternoon. To Audrey Broderick and to all who came and contributed to a fantastic amount of £2,113.43 for Ashgate Hospicecare.” The event also saw a bowls competition between Holymoorside Bowls Club and Holymoorside Tennis Club for the inaugural charity trophy presented by Cllr Thacker.
Ashgate Hospicecare: Sparkle Night Walk We can’t include this page of call outs and thanks without a mention to all those who took part in the Ashgate Hospicecare’s Sparkle Night Walk. 1,600 people covered the 10k walk stepping out from Chesterfield’s Technique Stadium at 10pm on Saturday 25 Sept. Sponsored by Vertu Toyota the walkers lit up the night which saw everyone entertained by stadium hosts, Peak Radio.
Carl Jones, Fundraising Manager at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: "I would like to thank every person who took on the Sparkle Night Walk, and those behind the scenes, the army of incredible volunteers along the entire route and our generous sponsors for covering so many of our costs. "It was incredible to see people back together after last year’s Sparkle was a virtual-only event. "We know that many people taking part are doing so in memory of their loved ones, many of whom were supported by Ashgate. That shared experience adds to the sense of community and creates a wonderful atmosphere, where people support one another."
Registration for next year’s event has opened, with the walk set to take place on Saturday 9 July 2022. Sign up for the early bird price of £7! www.sparklenightwalk.org.uk

GRANNY ANNIE Meet local author: Shelley Wilcockson Words: Simon Paterson Images: Shelley Wilcockson
W
hat does your Granny get up to when you are not there? She probably walks the dog, watches a bit of The Bill or does the crossword in the back of S40 and S41 Local Magazines!
Well, Granny Annie is different, she hasn’t quite grown up yet and she likes to get up to no good!
Granny Annie is the lead character in a wonderful children’s book written by local mum and teacher, Shelley Wilcockson. I was lucky enough to meet up with Shelley for a coffee and a chat at Koo. How did you come up with the character, Granny Annie?
Shelley: Well, I wish I had a more interesting story than I just started writing. Although, I like to think she’s based on my older alter ego. I don’t take life too seriously and neither does Granny Annie. So, who is Granny Annie?
Shelley: She is an absolutely wonderful Grandma who looks after her grandchildren, a lot, but when no one is around, she gets up to lots of mischief, like playing practical jokes on the post person, but the children don't know this! You could say she leads a double life. What age group is the book aimed at?
Shelley: Granny Annie has no minimum age and can be enjoyed by anyone, but the little ones up to about the age of eight enjoy it the most. As well as the book I have created some downloadable worksheets for parents, guardians and schools to use. These are completely free and great for learning verbs, finding sounds, spelling and encouraging kids to write their own stories. As they are written by a primary school teacher, they are perfect for use in the classroom. Page 50
Do you have a series of adventures planned for Granny Annie?
Shelley: I would love to write more, but it depends on the success of the first book. I want to go into primary schools to read the book for free and then if the school and the kids like it they can purchase the book and use the worksheets as part of their lesson plans. It would be fantastic if Granny Annie had a series of adventures! Is the book for sale in any local bookstores?
Shelley: My publisher said that Waterstones have a section for local authors, so I’ll approach them. It would be nice to do some book signings in our local store. Who are your favourite authors?
Shelley: I think David Walliams is brilliant. He’s written so many great children’s books. I know it’s a cliché, but I love Shakespeare. The key messages in his work are still relevant today. The illustrations match the character and story perfectly.
Shelley: I met Liz the illustrator through Bannister Publications. I couldn’t be any happier with the work she's done and I am so glad that I had the book printed and illustrated locally, Rob (Bannister Publications) was so helpful.
Shelley was kind enough to bring me a copy of Granny Annie which I took home and read to Florie (age 3) that night, and she loved it. I’d highly recommend grabbing a copy from her website. I can’t wait to read what Granny Annie gets up to next time.

Students can offer their expertise to support younger learners at local primaries, across the school and through the alphabet in art, dance, drama, English, geography, history, languages, maths, music, PE, science, technology or textiles; skills can be honed while taking part in worthy projects for the school charity – Project Lesotho – or the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award; and opportunities abound for a range of participants of all sorts in the school production, Sports Leadership and Young Enterprise. In all, more than 30 options provide a worthy backdrop to allow a constellation to shine. The autumn term has therefore brought a fresh crop of budding writers to the S40 Journalism office at Brookfield – and we thought we’d give them the chance to introduce themselves. Hello S40 readers! I’m an A-level student and I’m excited to be part of the school’s new writing team for S40: it feels really good to be trying out different extra-curriculars again. After a couple of strange school years, hopefully, we will have plenty to write about as everything starts to settle into a new normal. I have just started year 12, studying biology, chemistry, and maths, but would love to keep my interest Page 54
Hello S40! I'm a year 12 student at Brookfield studying geography, history and English Literature. I've written a little bit for S40 before and have delivered S40 magazines in my local area for several years. I think S40 local is an important part of the community and I'm looking forward to being able to continue writing for the magazine. – Aisling Rippin As well as the “old hands”, including Anja and Dan, this small but dedicated band will aim to keep you informed about life in the school.

Kip challenges those children who are already considered academically bright! With all the lockdown disruptions to our children’s lives, students are struggling to get back onto solid ground with their education. For some, it is having fallen behind because online learning was too uninspiring, or too tough to apply themselves to, or just plain overwhelming. For some students, like Teddy and Izzy it was boring and not nearly stimulating enough for their academic level. Work was, of necessity, targeted to a mid-range level by teachers, themselves under enormous pressure. No one’s to blame - that’s just how it was. For Teddy and Izzy this meant that their work was completed in a short time, and they were left frustrated and bored and increasingly ‘turned off’ by schoolwork. Unfortunately, when they returned to the classroom a similar situation occurred as teachers had to cope with an increased range of abilities depending on who did what during lockdown and how far behind some students had fallen. Work set for both Teddy and Izzy was not enabling them to be challenged and they were both left ‘chomping at the bit’ to work at a higher level. Their parents began to see small signs of this when Teddy began to drag his feet about going to school and Izzy became belligerent and moody at home when asked about school and homework. ‘It’s rubbish, it’s boring!’ was often the dinnertime conversation from both. A first for both of them. Amanda, Teddy and Izzy’s mum, knew Jo from Kip from an evening class they both attended before lockdown and running into each other one day in the
supermarket, Amanda turned to Jo for advice. Jo gave Amanda some ideas, but Amanda asked if they could both go to Kip for an assessment and then a few sessions, hoping they would be challenged and pushed to achieve new levels within their knowledge. Jo agreed and so they went along.
At the assessment it was abundantly clear to Jo that these two were way above their average English and Maths levels and from conversations with them, that they were thoroughly bored by learning in general. She challenged them both with new topics in comprehension and creative writing and the smiles just grew on their faces. Now some of Izzy’s school friends come along with her as well so that they still have some shared challenges and socialisation. Teddy just loves his football but at least he has stopped moaning about school being boring and is being more challenged there as well. He proudly brought in his first Merit award from school to show Jo. It was for being so keen to learn more! They won’t need Kip for long, just to fill the ‘enthusiasm for learning gap. Sometimes it just takes something a little different to keep your child enthusiastic to learn. If you recognise any of these things in your child, let Kip provide them with challenge and support. Call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 and get them started NOW!

Can You Help Breathe Life Into Tapton House? Words: Paul Chapman Images: Friends of Tapton House
T
apton House has been a private home, once the home of engineer George Stephenson, who built the first public railway using steam locomotives, a ladies' boarding school and a co-educational grammar, then comprehensive school. Today it stands empty and unused since Chesterfield College gave up the lease - hopefully this will change if the Friends of Tapton House get their way! Di Treece is a local resident and old ‘Taptonian’ (someone who attended the school), “I noticed on the Tapton House School Facebook page that it was feared the house would be converted to apartments for rent,” explains Di. “It was suggested that we should try to find out what's happening through official channels so I offered to contact a councillor I know to see what I could find out”
The research resulted in a group getting together to see if they could establish a case for the use of the building as ‘the community asset that it could, and should, be’ and then present this to the council as an alternative to apartments. Di put feelers out in April this year but the first meeting of interested people couldn’t take place until early in September because of covid 19. Many people who came along were old Taptonians, and others were either from the local community or
Tapton House A Georgian grade 2 listed building, rented to George Stephenson. When it became a school one room, the bedroom George died in, remained the ‘Stephenson room’. 2025 will be the 200 anniversary of the first passenger steam engine journey from Stockton to Darlington. There are also links with the buildings to the Markham and Paxton families, the industrial heritage that comes with the building really does put Chesterfield on the map. Chesterfield College were the last tenants moving out in 2018, since then the building has stood empty.
were simply interested as they loved the building and grounds and wanted it to remain as a facility for the whole community to use.
“One attendee at the meeting was a local artist who was interested in running art and craft workshops and exhibiting the work of other local artists at the site. Historians stepped forward, a plants-based foraging team expressed interest, and also a model railway group would like a base there. A contact at Barrow Hill is helping put a feasibility study together - and the group is learning a lot from people who have done similar projects, for example Barrow Hill and the recent renovations at Staveley Hall. “Chesterfield Borough Council arranged a tour for a small group of us to see inside the building, to see what state it’s in and to see what practical help they can give to iron out any basic problems. We are extremely grateful to all those people who are stepping forward to offer their time and expertise - builders, electricians, decorators, social media support etc etc. Things are gathering momentum,” says Di. “We have had some great ideas and helpful suggestions put forward and we are keen to ensure we record them all and keep people informed of progress. Our initial thoughts for use included space for therapists, counsellors, conferences, adult education, community/parent and child group, tea room, a small registry office type wedding venue and displays relating to George Stephenson, local history and the history of the house and school.” The group has been bowled over by the support that is being offered, despite the fact that it was feared things might stumble at the first hurdle, but with the support the group has received, they’re hopeful that in time they might just see their ideas take off.
The most recent support has come from a four week Zoom course run by the Social Enterprise Exchange which points out everything needed to set up a long-term community project. “We need to
establish a way to use the house that’s beneficial, fitting and in the spirit of the Markham family’s wishes that the house would be for the benefit and enjoyment of all the people of the borough, as well as there being full public access to the park, grounds and gardens,” says the group. “Creating apartments doesn’t fit with this - there is very little community space on the east side of town and the house is simply too nice a place to be left empty”.
The letting agents have only had one semi-serious offer so far and are planning to step up marketing. This will start at the end of September but the group is keen to put a solid proposal to the council as soon as possible and keep the house as a local community asset whilst preserving and celebrating the heritage and history of the house. There has been support from local councillors and town hall officers who have made suggestions and offered help, all of which the group really appreciates and has found very useful. The house has 17 large old classrooms, some with interconnecting doors, and an assembly hall which would make a fantastic space in which to create a full-size sports hall and build a stage to make it a great place for plays and performances as well. There are ideas to sublet rooms, either in total or as shared spaces and they will lend themselves to practically anything, but people wouldn’t necessarily have to run a creative business. At the moment, the committee is working hard to get a constitution established. Proposals are being drawn up, and plans to revitalise the building and bring it back into use are being developed to create something that will generate an income to sustain the viability of the group’s plans. To keep up to date on progress, please go to friendsoftaptonhouse.wordpress.com or if you would like to get involved please get in touch.

The Gem that is Pam's Gems Words: Paul Chapman Images: Pam's Gems Like what you see? It’s Pam’s Gems, jewellery maker Pam Bell who has put a birthday gift to good use and now creates beautiful jewellery that she sells and then donates all profits to local charities! What’s not to like? Pam is retired, is Derbyshire born and bred but moved back to Chesterfield just before COVID landed. “I love Chesterfield, being on the edge of the Peak District is fabulous, it allows me to enjoy my passion for rambling around in the hills.”
“The jewellery making started when my son gave me some birthday money and I wanted to put it to good use,” explains Pam. “I’d always wanted to have a go at making resin-based jewellery so studied lots of videos on the internet, narrowed down what it was I wanted to do and placed an order for the kit required.” “I plucked up the courage to give it a go, and when I started it was just for a bit of fun, I’ve always indulged my creative streak and it wasn’t long before I was finding the process of making jewellery really addictive.”
It wasn’t long before Pam had made quite a range of jewellery and simply wanted to give it away to create space for the next lot. “People suggested I create an Etsy shop and sell it that way, but this is meant to be an enjoyable hobby and not a job. I decided to sell it and pass on the profits to Ashgate Hospice” says Pam. “I sold a lot last Christmas through a friend's shop in Sheffield, at craft markets, and response has been good.”
and small, to raise money for their charity and give them 50% of her takings.
Over the last few days, Pam has been planning and building her website www.pamsgems.co.uk, hopefully this will be live by the time we go to print. Pam describes it as a simple site with contact details and images, she wants to keep things local and as simple as possible.
I asked Pam which was her favourite piece to date? “I love blue and I have favourites every time I make something. My products include earrings, necklaces, pendants and beaded necklaces etc. I also do glow in the dark necklaces for children and recently sold items at a coffee morning at Flamecare on Chatsworth Road, the profits going to MacMillan” says Pam. If you like what Pam produces, she’s happy to take commissions and if you’re a local charity or organisation looking for an interesting way to raise some funds, just give her a call on 07907 661009 or via her website.
When she’s not making jewellery, Pam loves to explore the Peaks. Pam did the Sparkle Walk for Ashgate Hospice, rambles with her dog Rosie and just loves being back in Derbyshire.
Prices; Box sets £12.50, Earrings £3.50 and Glow In-The-Dark Necklaces just £2.00.
The only outlet for Pam’s work is craft fayres but she would like to work with local charities or organisations, large Page 64

Friends of Whitecotes Playing Field
Discover Chesterfield’s Black History at the Museum
The Friends of Whitecotes Playing Field group was set up with the aim of securing the long-term future of the field, improving facilities for all, protecting wildlife there, and preserving the countryside feel of the place when its future was in doubt with the possibility of a housing development.
Chesterfield Museum and Chesterfield African Caribbean Community Association (ACCA) have joined up to launch an exhibition that helps us learn about the history and experiences of Chesterfield’s black community. The exhibition celebrates the Black History Month, telling the story of Chesterfield’s Windrush Generation. It highlights the challenges they faced establishing new lives in town and how they overcame them, also giving space to our town's younger generations experiences.
The exhibition includes powerful video interviews with members of the community who share their memories and experiences. On display will be personal items and memorabilia as well as special awards received.
Their first Annual General Meeting took place on the 1 August 2016 since then funding has been secured totalling approximately £85,000 from a variety of sources which has enabled a multitude of improvements: • • • • •

New Tarmac paths A drainage system has been installed to eliminate the boggy areas. The old play area has had a new wet pour surface laid along with several new items of play equipment A further play area has been created with multi age use equipment A mini goal has been sited on the top part of the field and on the bottom area, fivea-side goal posts, along with a tarmac area with a basketball cum football goal. There are benches dotted all around the area some placed to enjoy the farreaching views. Disabled entrances have also been installed
Why not come along to enjoy this wonderful haven and if you would like to be involved with the continuing process of preserving and improving one of our fantastic green spaces, contact them on: whitecotesplayingfield@gmail.com We would also love to hear your views on the possible creation of an outdoor gym, please email them your thoughts. Councillor Lud Ramsey, (Spire Ward DCC) the Chair of ACCA said: “Local history is an important subject that should always be explored and studied. However, some bits of history always seem to be left out or forgotten. “ACCA and Chesterfield Museum have worked together to inform the public about the contribution the black community has made to Chesterfield. “Our exhibition will be displayed at the museum during Black History Month to enhance everyone's knowledge about some of the experiences and stories of the black community in our town as well as highlighting their positive achievements and contributions.”
Pictured is Lud Ramsey, Melissa Redhead, Reuben Redhead, Cllr Glenys Falconer & Anne-Frances Hayes.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “It’s important that we use our museum to help people learn about our history and we should not exclude any part. This important exhibition presents lots to learn and understand.” The exhibition is on until 15 January 2022 and the museum is open Mon and Thu to Sat from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free but donations are welcome.

Garden Tips
AUTUMN GARDENING TIPS Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
I
f you have been organised enough to order barerooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.
Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light.
Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seed-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.
Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost.
Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.
If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more. Page 68

What’s Aurora Choir About? Words: Dawn Kelly @ Aurora Choir
A
urora is a group of women who meet to learn and practice a cappella songs each week. We have an extremely dedicated Operational Director, and an excellent Musical Director, to support and develop our skills. However, we are so much more than that: Aurora is a sisterhood, united by a love of singing, bonding over the joy and care we put into our music. We started out as a group interested in singing, but we have grown into a family ready to support each other through disappointments, sadness, happiness and achievements.
In March 2020 with COVID lockdown restrictions, we became unable to meet face-to-face. Like many other choirs our meetings had to be held virtually via Zoom, which was hard as we could not hear each other sing due to delays over the internet, but we kept going. During that time, with the help of Michael Dobbs of Woodborough Video, we managed to create a few virtual performances which can be accessed by the following YouTube links, via our website and the quick codes at the bottom of the page.
In May 2021, we began meeting again outdoors and even entertained a few passers-by. We were really overjoyed to be able to meet face to face for ’normal’ practice in our rehearsal venue on July 19 (2021). Born from a love of unaccompanied harmony singing, Aurora was founded by Dawn Kelly in 2006. The choir name was originally suggested by a friend, ‘Aurora’ being the Greek goddess of the Dawn. On 18 September 2021, Aurora was 15 years old. We normally celebrate by giving a free concert with tea and cake for all who attend, but for the past two years we have been unable to celebrate in our usual way. However, the future looks bright and we look forward to our 16th birthday celebrations in 2022, and to performing in other concerts to support local charities. Aurora are always happy to recruit new members; there’s no need to read music, as songs can be learned by listening to teacher tracks. So if you or anyone you know is interested in joining our singing sisterhood, please feel free to make contact. You will quickly feel at ease by the very warm welcome and support you will receive. ‘Aurora are a fabulous group of ladies who share their passion for singing with each other. Although we strive to be our best, there is no pressure put on us-the most important thing is that we have fun through our music and friendship. New members are always welcomed and soon feel part of our family! If you enjoy singing what are you waiting for? Come and join us-it’s one of the best things I ever did.’ Clare

‘I hadn't sung in a choir since I was at school, so I was full of trepidation. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and I realised that you don't have to be Maria Callas to sing with a choir. I practice when I'm cooking or doing the ironing. I have been a member of Aurora for 12 years and love performing at our concerts. Audiences are so appreciative and I think we sound quite good’.
'I wanted to meet people and I wanted to sing and I thought the best way of doing that was to join a choir. I've made lots of friends from different walks of life and the camaraderie is very good. It doesn't matter what's gone on that day, you start singing and it's all forgotten for a couple of hours. I find singing very therapeutic. I've got chronic asthma and my lung function has improved since I've been singing regularly' Jayne joined Aurora in 2015.

Sport Danny Wilson, later he was swapped with Gary Caldwell, then Lester, then Allen, then Sheridan! What did all these managers have in common, except that they all underperformed? The club had a different ethos and set up back then, which frankly wasn't fit for purpose for the long term. And I, like many Spireites, screamed the famous words “Keep the faith!” in blind hope after each new manager was announced, as the club plummeted down the leagues to the eventual relegation to where we are now - the National League. I do however believe these 3 words feel more believable now. Seriously, what else can you ask for from the club than what we have in place now? We cannot win every single game that's for sure but we can and do seem to learn from our limited errors, hence our current league position.
CFC KEEP THE FAITH
Words & Images: Michael South
Compare the differences from 2015-20 to now. Firstly, the buzz is definitely back.
L
et's not get bogged down by our first league defeat away against Woking, losing 1-3, or our 2-2 draw against Torquay at home 4 days previous. Yes, we threw away 2 late goals in both games. Yes, we didn't take all the points as expected. But at the time of writing, we are still second in the table, remember that! Who wouldn't have taken being in this position at the start of the season? In fact, by the time this has been published, we could be top again. Let's recap and stay focused on the master plan, our promotion back to the league two of football.
At present, we have played 9, won 5, drew 3 and crucially lost only 1. We still stand second in the National League, just a point behind Dagenham and Redbridge (whom we visit on 30th October). But fundamentally, this is football. I understand the frustration with the last two results and it is natural to feel disheartened with all the positivity we have experienced in the last 12 months on and off the field, with the Community Trust takeover, new gaffer and the new signings, but let's keep the faith. Things are different now. If anything, we are spoilt with the set up at the club. It's finally how it should be and is how many Spireites have dreamt it to be. That, however, may be the problem now. We expect the rewards to return which departed with Paul Cook back in 2015. Let's not jump the gun and get depressed now though. I can't see us being relegated this season, can you? In fact there's more chance of us gaining promotion than being relegated. Remember when Dean Saunders was plonked in charge after Cookie? Then he was replaced with Page 84
Secondly the kop has found its voice again. “We are top of the league!” has even been bellowing out loudly. That's not been heard for years!
Thirdly, we have some cracking players again, who clearly want to play and CAN play football.
Fourthly, and the best of all, a manager who is hungry for the prospect of League 2 football next season. Sat with my camera, pitch side, it gives me goosebumps hearing the chants, including "James Rowes barmy army!" and “James Rowe give us a wave” and my personal favourite, "Wake me up before you go go! Who needs Messi when you’ve got Kabongo!" Epic! Kabongo Tshimanga - the talisman.
We struck gold when we landed Asanti last season, now we have two goal-scoring machines. Okay, Asanti is still out injured but imagine the lineup and the score lines when both are named on the team sheets by James Rowe. The squad will improve even further.
Having only been here since August, signed from Boreham Wood for an undisclosed but an “amazing fee”, (madness to sell him in my opinion but as a Spireite, who am I to moan!?)The 24-yearold has already made his intentions known and has already become the National League's top scorer - bagging nine goals in nine games, including six in his last few starts. Tshimanga has been an instant crowd favourite as the chants prove. On match days though, he is a joy to watch. So, to conclude, let's keep the faith and enjoy the ride as it's showing to be one hell of a season if the first 9 games are anything to go by! COYB's!
