Intro
Hi and welcome to our April Edition.
Spring bulbs push through the ground whilst world events shock and cause me to stop and think, but still life for me goes on as usual, although my pocket money seems to run out a lot faster! At times like this I realise how lucky I am, a roof over my head, food on the table etc, things we take for granted everyday. I can't imagine the level of bravery needed to get the family to pack the things they need in a rucksack and head to a neighbouring country for safety.
As I sit typing, I realise and appreciate the luxury I have to speak freely, to produce S40 Local, to spread a bit of positivity and drop it through your letterbox. If you are working with charities or organisations supporting refugees, please let me know if through S40 Local we can help at all. Turn around in print isn't instant, but if we can help please give us a call. This editions brilliant front over comes from Forest McClymont, and I love it, thanks Forest for putting this bespoke piece together for us. We have some new businesses to meet, catch up with some old ones, meet groups doing fab stuff in the community and almost not worth mentioning but we reach 13 years old at S40 Local, our teenage years to come, we all know how much support our fab teenagers need - so I look forward to your ongoing support I hope you enjoy what we do and see you in April. Stay safe.

Birthday
Teenage Kicks Words: Paul Chapman Images: Cover Artists
U
nlucky for some, 13? We're hoping not at S40 Local as 2022 is the year we turn 13! A teenager. Ok, we don’t mumble (hopefully) like ‘Kevin & Perry’, Harry Enfield’s comedy characters full of teenage angst and we’ve not worn a baseball cap backwards for a few years but perhaps our jeans are a bit too skinny! This is our 126th edition, that’s quite a few adverts and pages, 9,126 individual pages laid out, 126 deliveries, loaded into my van and dropped off to my fabulous delivery team. It’s kept me busy!
That first edition took me out of my comfort zone, walking into businesses, introducing myself and trying to sell my idea. I’ll admit I wasn’t looking forward to it and was expecting to be shown the door. What I found was completely the opposite, businesses greeted me with a smile, took time to listen, made me drinks and many of these guys I now call friends. One such business owner was Phil from Newbold Bedrooms, he recently took a break from advertising but is back in this edition, thanks Phil for chatting with me that day. Particular, thanks also go to Libby for being so supportive right from the beginning and giving me the confidence to see the idea through. Looking back at my first edition, 16 pages in total, 20 adverts, three of those advertisers are still with us today; Brampton Brewery, Noble Motorsport and Chesterfield Plumbing & Home Services which you'll find in this edition.
Page 4
I can’t thank everyone who advertises with us enough. I owe you guys a massive debt, your adverts enable me to pay the bills, pay local people, deliverers, proof readers, cartoons, crosswords etc, and allows me to keep sharing features about the great people, businesses, clubs, societies, sports clubs and community groups around here. We now have our sister magazine S41 Local and Simon Paterson has become a great friend, he runs that magazine. We swap ideas and editorial between us and he puts me straight when the ‘Victor Meldrew’ in me steps up! Thanks Simon, for keeping me grounded.
I’ve learnt that you can’t stand still, we need to be on the lookout for the next interesting spread, talking to the next new business and this keeps us fresh. At West Studios, I’ve met the creative gurus, Defeye Creative, and I'm excited to be working with them on Un-Hampered - an exciting project that will benefit the independent businesses of Chesterfield.
Thank you all for your emails of support, it really gives me a boost when you let me know that you enjoy what we do! And finally thanks to everyone who has ever mentioned an advertiser you've seen in S40 Local or recommended us - it all helps!
So, 13 years on and things are still moving at a pace, busy, interesting, exciting and enjoyable. Happy birthday to S40 Local!

rom the walls of Brookfield School to shop fronts, weddings and London Fashion Week. This month's front cover artist and local mum of three, Forest, has a lot to be proud of. I was lucky enough to squeeze into her busy schedule for a coffee and a chat about all things floral and arty.
Forest, many of our previous front cover stars knew from an early age that they were going to be an artist. Was this the same for you?
Well, both of my parents are artists and I have been illustrating for as long as I can remember. It’s just what we do as a family. Pete (Pete Barber, Dad from UrbanCanvas.co.uk) took me to festivals, where he was working, such as Bearded Theory, and I loved it. I’ve just always known that I wanted to earn a living being creative. Sounds like a cool childhood to me. Can you remember the first piece you ever sold?
I think I was at school and my teacher wanted to buy it, but I gave it her for free. It was a collage piece, I think it's still in her office at Brookfield.
How old were you when realised you could make a good living by following your creative passion?
I didn’t really know I was ever going to make money at it, it was just something that I had to do! When I started being creative with flowers and posting pictures online of my arrangements, people started messaging me asking to buy them. I was just doing it for fun, and it just really exploded! This was about three years ago, I've now honed my craft and am really enjoying the weddings I’m doing, especially since the restrictions have lifted. That’s great to hear and very inspirational for our young readers. Tell me about London Fashion Week, you were involved in that, weren’t you?
I was, I did a set design during the pandemic. They weren’t doing runways so I created sets out of flowers so they could use them in the production. I really enjoyed it. From Brookfield to London Fashion week! That’s quite the journey. Who inspires you? You can’t say your parents, sorry mum and dad. Page 8
Alexander McQueen, Vivien Westwood... I thought I would go down the fashion route, I quite liked the catwalk. You can create anything for the model to wear and it’s a piece of art, unique. Fabric is just so versatile. Textiles are where fashion and fine art meet. What’s the highlight of your journey so far?
It has to be being on set, that’s where I want to be really. I love photoshoots and being part of a team of creatives all sharing and making something special together, so, more set designs please. If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?
To be honest one of my favourite florists is Anna from Swallows and Damsons, her work is amazing and luckily I get to freelance with her regularly! But I also LOVE the idea of working on set designs for Elle Decor, Vogue Living or similar design companies doing set designs and large scale installations. So, what’s next for Forest the Florist?
Well, I have a studio on my friend's farm... It’s not Adam’s Happy Hen’s, is it?
No, but Adam is a good friend of mine. We had dinner with him last night! I work from a shipping container, it’s very cold, but it works, and I can fit all my stuff in it. I am currently kitting out an out-building where I live, and I will be able to host clients as soon as this May. It’s very exciting and I can’t wait. Of course, we have Mother’s Day coming up so get your orders in now people, and my wedding calendar is filling up fast! It’s great to meet someone like Forest who has found her purpose and is living her passion. I absolutely love our floral front cover and it’s the perfect illustration to depict spring as it emerges.
Forest is taking orders for Mother’s Day and events bookings. The best way get in touch with her is through her socials and via email: e: forest.inkandearth@gmail.com inkandearth.studio www.inkandearthstudio.org

LEJOG
Not French for 'a run' English for Land's End to John O'Groats Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andy Hibberd (Leading Imagery Photography)

I
love someone who's up for a challenge, so when I met Andy Hibberd, if I'd had a cap on, I'd raise it to him! He's riding LEJOG (that's Land’s End to John O'Groats – 840 miles), which includes riding the height of Everest plus some, so pretty impressive … BUT! He's not taking the usual ten days. His target is less than 50 hours, non-stop! It was originally a solo attempt, but he now has the support of Paul Sorrell, who's been training alongside Andy for the last year, oh and it's been moved from 2021 to 2022 for reasons I'm sure you'll be aware of.
"Paul will be someone to talk to, although I'm likely to fall in a heap at the side of the road as he bores me to sleep!" So, who is this chap, Andy Hibberd? I met him through a What's App group request, and for starters, he was a Royal Marine and Royal Navy Commando, who left in 2009 to set up his photography business, Leading Imagery, based at Clay Cross.
Like all Royal Marines, Andy spent his time in the same basic training that all Marines undertake and in over ten years in the services, it has taken him to 26 countries, taking in 5 Operational Tours. In 2002, he was serving in Northern Ireland in a role where he was working alongside a front-line photographer; there is one assigned to each unit. "The role of front-line photographer is to work within the HQ element of a Commando Unit", explains Andy, "to portray what's happening and also capture photos from all manner of use including Intelligence, Media and ultimately recording historical actions." Andy went through the eight-month training at RAF Cosford to gain his photography qualifications, which saw him promoted before being shipped back to Iraq to support the Commando unit. "After leaving the military, I found my love for cycling again, first on the mountain bike, then road riding and the challenges it brings. I started looking for longer rides, 300km, 10k feet of climbing, 200-mile sportives (rides you pay to do with a planned route and feeding stations etc., fun, social challenges), that sort of thing. "I'd always fancied LEJOG, but I wasn't interested in the usual multiday ride. I wanted a challenge, two days, which became the under 50 hours target. The record is 43 hours.

Page 13
Heros "We'll need to average 17mph to cover the 840 miles and 30,000 feet of climbing, and I've been working with a coach, Ken Bryson from Total Endurance based in Aberdeen, to keep my heart rate in target zone two, less than 140 bpm for the duration." Andy aims to raise £10,000 split equally between the Royal Marines Charity and Dementia Awareness, charities close to his heart. "I had a friend who had dementia, it was horrific to see them suffer. It's best to let them just be as happy as they can." With his military background, Andy pulled a few strings to get people on board. A charity dinner on 8 April 2022 at Santo's Higham Farm & Restaurant will see Gary from Duratus UK and Craig Williams Ultra talking, both former servicemen who worked alongside Andy, there will also be an auction at this event with lots including a day at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone and a one-off sketch by Tommy Hibberd of six times Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy signed by Sir Chris. Also planned on Sunday 3 April is The Ashover Charity 100km Sportive sponsored by Bainbridge's Hair, which takes in parts of the Peak District with a final push to Beeley. Alongside this, they'll be a 10km ride at the Ashover showground for Families. For details, Google' Ashover-Charity-100km'. Andy enrolled the services of Ken Bryson, who coached Dean Stott, another former serviceman who did the Pan America's world record-breaking ride in 2018, and Andy is somehow finding the time to ride five days a week, run a business and still spend some time with his family. He does admit to having an excellent support team around him and a very understanding wife! All this was fine during the lockdown when he had more free time, but he finds that he's starting to feel the pressure, "there is an expectation growing, and I'm accountable for the outcome, the time on the road and the turbo trainer is feeling real as the event approaches," says Andy. The start date is scheduled for the week commencing 18 June 2022, whichever two days offer the best weather window, the original event was planned for 2021, but COVID put this back 12 months. As we chat, the following weekend for Andy involves a 170-mile ride with an overnight stay and then another 170 miles back the following day. He needs people to support him on Saturday. They drive back, swap over, and two others help him on the return leg. It was clear how appreciative Andy was of these guys. Without them, this challenge simply wouldn't be happening. Page 14
There are an important bunch of local businesses who have stepped up as sponsors as well, so a shout out to each of them; Liam from Lords Roofing & Sons (Wingerworth), Team Boot Camp (Shropshire), Grinsty Train (across the UK), Middlebrook Transport (Alfreton), Paint & Bodywork Services (Chesterfield), Sheaf Marble (Sheffield), Buzzbox Fitness (Chesterfield), Nix Cycles (Sutton in Ashfield) and Leading Imagery (Clay Cross). Along with a whole host of individuals and businesses who has supported everyone in one way or another over the last year. Andy loves a target, his training is a massive commitment, and this isn't just a run of the mill charity challenge. Anyone who is using the Tour of Cambridgeshire Cycling Festival's Time Trial and then a 100-mile sportive the day after as training has to be pretty serious about achieving his goals. As I type, Andy has raised £8,300 of his £10k target, so he isn't far off. If you want to donate either directly or by attending the charity night or Ashover event, the details can be found by accessing the Facebook group listed or on the gofundme website. LEJOGCC21 www.gofundme.com - 'search lejogcc21' I can’t heap enough praise on Andy for his effort and wish him every success in June. Hopefully we can catch up again later in the year and see how things went. ‘Per Terram’, by land as the Marines would say.

"There are things to make, read, carry around and touch, a chance to explore and meet not only the emotional but physiological needs of the body and mind. It's not always easy to get support when we need it. Our boxes have been made with the hope of alleviating some distress or pain and are posted to your door. herapy Sisters is the kind of thing we like at S40 Local – a small independent business offering a product that's unique, all done locally, by sisters-in-law, Rebecca and Bex!
They have developed an initial range of products offering ''emotional support in a box'' available from their ETSY shop (etsy.com/shop/TherapySisters). They fit through the letterbox and can be sent to anyone you feel could benefit from a little support. Alongside, Bex Fennell offers one-2-one psychotherapy consultations from her base in Chesterfield. Rebecca and Bex are well qualified: a Systemic Psychotherapist and an Integrative Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience working with children and families supporting mental health, emotional well-being and building positive relationships.
Bex has worked in Sheffield schools for 20 years, "supporting families to work with the schools and resolve issues with children's mental health," she explains. "We look at how people react to everyday events to address them before they become long term issues. Often, if conversations start early enough, people would feel differently. We look at the environment and circumstances of people's experiences to understand the problems." The new business emerged out of COVID. "During COVID, we found ourselves sending stuff to friends and family, who we couldn't visit. We'd send a package with ''feel-good stuff'' and activities," Bex says. "This inspired us to expand this to support others rather than just as a bit of fun for us. So many people have felt isolated and struggled through the pandemic.
"Rebecca and I put together a pack of interventions specifically for young people, things Page 18
The first two boxes are designed to support people with grief and anxiety, aimed at younger people (between six and late teens) who may have been having a difficult time.
Feedback from sales so far has been five stars. Each box is sent with a personal message from Bex or Rebecca, and they smell delightful, scented with lavender, known for its calming effect and targeting the sense of smell when you receive your box. They have already had requests for boxes to be created that cover new areas, the death of pets, transition to secondary school, and separation and divorce, plus they are looking to expand and develop boxes for adults.
"A couple of local charities have also approached us to create more boxes, and we've had a chat with local BBC radio," says Bex excitedly.
As mentioned, Bex Fennell can also offer adult therapy. She is listed on Psychology Today and registered with the National Counselling Society. Her integrative psychotherapy approach covers anxiety, grief, and sexual abuse. Her process is creative and uses different connecting methods to equip people with the tools to cope through life. Consultations can be set up over zoom if people Prefer. Their boxes can be purchased via Etsy and sent directly to someone you think needs a little support. DANSIES A Local Institution Words & Images: Paul Chapman
Page 22

D
ansies, a quiet, unassuming Chesterfield institution, have traded on Chatsworth Road for 76 years. A treasure trove of services that once might have offered thrifty repairs and today is at the forefront of the green revolution, they fix stuff, so you don't have to send it to a landfill!
Recently Dansies (on the island opposite Morrisons) have upgraded a second-hand iMac I purchased, fitted a larger hard drive, added memory and rebuilt it to the latest software version. They have replaced various broken iPhones, and iPads screens, rebuilt a windows laptop and repaired the same laptop. They have sold me replacement parts for our Dyson, sold me a reconditioned Henry vacuum (they later replaced the motor after I burnt it out), plus we've purchased printer paper, phone leads, various stationery items. They have become an advertiser and a business that offers us affordable services we can rely on! There is probably some way Dansies can provide services to all of us, consumers, self-employed traders, or small local businesses! Mr Dansie was previously an engineer in the RAF and set the business up following WWII. In 1946 Mr Dansie started doing typewriter repairs, manufacturing many of the parts himself. It’s suspected he took over the premises from Crappers Haberdashery.
They moved from parts to selling Olympia typewriters, becoming the main dealer in the area. In 1976, they added stationery supplies and the business was sold to a Sheffield based family. In 1996 it was sold again, this time to Paul Rice, John Walton, and Nigel Walton, the three present owners who are all local, and continue to offer an ever-changing array of services.
Paul started in the business in 1982, John in 1984 and Nigel, John's son, joined in 1996 when the three of them took over. Paul's description of the business: 'Dansies supply everything for the office, from the paper clip to the computer systems, today we offer a wide range of services, stationery, large photocopier sales, service and maintenance for businesses and alongside this we offer computer, mobile phone, laptop and tablet repairs for the public, plus vacuum cleaner repairs.' Their website has a quote from Paul, 'Being the current custodians of Dansies comes with a responsibility to uphold the good name it acquired and maintained for over 70 years. Therefore we always ensure any piece of equipment we sell comes with our Dansies 12-month guarantee. Our repairs and maintenance come with a 3-month guarantee for excellence and quality of service.
We pride ourselves on our industry knowledge and friendly approachable attitude, so you can rest assured that when you come to Dansies, the job gets done right!'
"We like to form long term relationships with our customers," says Paul. "We get to know each other and build a set of services that works for both." Paul has always been in office supplies, previously at Taylor & Brown, Mansfield, who also started in 1946 as an Olympia dealer. John is an ex-Marine engineer, having worked in the Royal Navy, he has driven buses but, due to health issues, undertook a course in electronics, typewriters, and photocopiers at a disabled college in Durham. He came to Dansies for work experience following his retraining and never left. Nigel came straight from school and specialises in photocopier repairs and maintenance; this is still a major part of the business and represents around 70% of the business's activity across the county and close by.
The three are supported by Jayne Blackwood on reception, who has been with them for 12 years, Frank Stawarz has been with them for 21 years, and Ethan Douthwaite is the newest recruit, having been with them since 2018. The team are also supported by Ted Stevens, who has 40 years' experience in photocopier sales and Michele Deakin, their bookkeeper. Like any small business, there is great banter going on in the store and workshop; it reminded me of my first role in fulltime employment putting together IBM AT and XT personal computers and DEC PDP systems. If you need a screen repair for a mobile phone, Dansies can help. A new battery in an iPhone 6 or 7 starts at £35 and prolongs the life of your device. That old vacuum cleaner that's in need of an overhall can be sorted, and whilst you're there, you can pick up some printer paper and a memory stick. So, there you have it, a quick introduction to the team at Dansies. Give them a call for repairs, and don't forget to tell them where you saw them and be sure to take your S40 Local along for 10% off the price of your repair.

(1st) Classy Kitchens
We catch up with 1st Class Kitchens after they refit their Derby Road showroom. Words & Images: Paul Chapman
I
always look forward to meeting up with Helen and Dave Oxley from 1st Class Kitchens to see their latest showroom refurb and learn about the latest trends and styles in kitchen design. The problem is, I come away, get home, and look at our kitchen thinking, ‘we need to update this!’ When walking into the showroom this time, I’m immediately impressed by a stunning quartz worktop on display that wraps down to the floor on each side of a funky (can I still describe something as ‘funky’?) looking island; see pics. This looks amazing and, like everything they do, can be bespoke made to fit any requirement and comes in a range of colours that will suit all tastes, no matter how discerning.
The doors of the island and the main displays in the 1st of three showrooms are Shaker style, these with handles, the main units in a very on-trend dark blue/grey are handless, small recesses at the top of drawers and doors and vertical on the full height units allow you to open the cabinets, and I love the lighting, recessed and integrated into the bottom panel of the cabinets. This all results in a very sleek look, no need for pelmets and cornices, and lighting directed straight down where it’s needed and 100% hidden away. Dave and Helen are a husband-and-wife team, and Dave has worked on the tools for many years, Helen looks after the showroom and helps with design and styling and the pair are supported by a team of time served craftsmen who, like them, strive for the highest level of quality in their work. If the installations in the showrooms are anything like their work for customers, I’m sure people will be happy with their work. They have access to all services you’ll need during an installation and take care of every task from initial design to the final sweep up before leaving for the next job. Business is brisk at 1st Class Kitchens and they have been working since Christmas on the showroom refit. They have had periods through the lockdown when they have had to cease work Page 26
but have worked carefully when they can, at one point having to ban customers so their installers could work as a bubble. They have a great and varied range on display, including appliances with WIFI connection and my favourite, the Siemens InductionAir system, simple design, no need for an overhead extractor, flexibility in how you use zones on the hob, and functions that make cooking so much easier for us all. Plus, the design allows you to create a sense of free-flowing space and light, ideal for large open plan spaces or if space is tight and you want to maximise storage space. Connected appliances allow you to warm the oven for when you get home or turn things down if you’re running late etc. One thing I can’t see myself wanting is a WIFI connected fridge, although the idea of viewing the camera to see what’s needed whilst you’re at the shops might be worthwhile … or perhaps checking to see who’s pinching your chocolate! 1st Class Kitchens can supply appliances from Bosch, Neff and Siemens and hold their stocks of popular items to reduce waiting times that are still experienced at times following the pandemic.
“We’re still doing quite a lot of larger, open plan rooms,” says Helen. “New house design features a single communal living space, and this is reflected in the work we are being asked to undertake.”
“Alongside this, we are doing several more traditional designs and styles, our in-frame designs are still popular, and we have traditional wood finishes available. The doors and cabinets we use are British made, and we do try and support UK brands wherever we can. It’s important to us to use quality British suppliers. “We also offer office design as the requirement for people to work from home has changed from temporary to permanent for many, and we’ve been responding to this offering bespoke, fitted office spaces, bespoke builds for lounges, cinema rooms etc. The way people use their homes has changed over the last two years, and we love designing an environment that works for everyone.” If you need a new or updated kitchen, office design, or help figuring out how to best use the space you call home, give Helen and Dave a call or pop down to their showroom on Derby Road, and as always, tell them where you saw them … S40 Local! And the winner is? LATERLIVINGNOW! Local independent equity release specialists, Laterlivingnow!, has been named 'Winner' of the 'Best Financial Adviser - 5 or fewer advisers' category at the ‘Equity Release Awards 2022’, the 'Oscars' of the industry. Laterlivingnow!, as the only Equity Release specialist company based in Chesterfield but serving clients throughout the UK, claimed 'Best Financial Adviser - 5 or fewer advisers' at the Equity Release Awards ceremony in London in January. Simon Chalk – the founder, said, "this award is testament to the hard work, integrity, and expertise of our small privately owned firm," Kaye Wallis – Head of Marketing added, "the judging panel were clearly impressed by the first-class service we offer our clients and our reputation for giving clear, appropriate advice and guidance". Simon doesn't intend to let the company become too big for its boots. "We are small, independent of every lender and enjoy being so. The big national firms that advertise on TV and the internet are often promoting their own plans and simply cannot match us for personal service or choice". Customer delight is evidenced by 88 Google Reviews - each one an impressive '5-star *****' rating, with 166 reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5.0 on VouchedFor - the leading site for reviews of professional firms. This has helped Laterlivingnow! gain a listing in the Sunday Times 'Top Rated Advisers 2022' guide. Simon said “more and more advisers and big brands are entering the equity release market, making it difficult for customers to know who to trust with such a big decision. Taking out a Lifetime Mortgage can affect entitlement to certain benefits and impact on future choices in paying for care. We believe that our small team possess the best combination of experience, knowledge and skills to help guide people at what can be a critical point in their lives.” Page 32
Not being tied to any single lender, Laterlivingnow! can access the 'whole of market', helping source the most favourable plans from over 700 available today, and secure attractive fixed interest rates for life. With interest rates widely reported as due to rise, many homeowners over 55 are taking advantage by releasing equity now. With inflation making everyone's living costs rise, Laterlivingnow! has experienced an increase in enquiries from homeowners over 55 looking to cover day-to-day living expenses, or to help out the family. The pandemic has led to people spending more time at home, encouraging them to make home improvements, extend living space, or adapting a room to become a home-office. Laterlivingnow! offers a FREE initial consultation to help homeowners decide if an equity release lifetime mortgage could be right for them, as it may not always be the best option.
With a choice of a home visit, phone call, or video call (e.g., Zoom, WhatsApp), Laterlivingnow! can guide you through this important area, and of course, you’re welcome to invite along family or a trusted friend. If you have any questions about equity release, please call Laterlivingnow!

Jo’s ‘magic wand’ as told by her happy students…
At every session at Kip there are up to five individual students on their own computers and doing an individualised learning programme. This does not mean they are unaware of each other and how each other is progressing!
Sarah is ten and doing her best to up her written skills to increase her SATs score before going up to secondary school. James is also ten but is working hard at his Maths to improve his SAT scores. Reuben is seven and struggles with his confidence and most aspects of English and Maths. He has progressed well in his work but still has a way to go. Jude is eight years old and has considerable problems with his reading, being able to read only eighteen out of the total of 120 Key Stage 1 highfrequency words. They all come together with Jo one evening a week at the Matlock Kip. So where does this 'magic wand' come from then?
It began with Izzy a year 11 student who was tasked with writing an article about Kip for her English homework. She arrived at the class to interview each of the students. Sarah was her first and she said it was like having a magic wand waved by Jo that made the lines on the computer seem clearer; they seemed to all fall into place as she worked and, even if they did not immediately fall into place, she had some strategies which she called 'Jo’s magic wand' to cope with them. When Izzy asked James, he knew exactly what Sarah meant as his 'magic wand' worked on his
Maths in the same way. Rueben was smiling as he said his magic wand made him feel strong inside, and Rueben knew that if he kept that feeling, he could do anything he wanted to do. He said he used to feel scared, but now that Jo had given him his own 'magic wand', felt so much better.
Little Jude was noticeably quiet. He didn't know how his 'magic wand' worked or even if he had one, but Sarah reminded him of one evening when Jude played a reading game using the flashcards. At the end of the game, he counted those he could read. Lots of encouragement and support was needed for Jude to 'have a go' but, week by week, the number increased, 24, 28, 33… Eventually, he had a big pile of words to read with confidence. As usual, he started to count them aloud 64,65,66,67,68… then something amazing:
93,94!
... 91,92,
Sarah reminded him how all the other students had given him a big clap! He was a champion, and they were proud of his hard work, determination, refusal to give up and sheer bravery to make a change in his life. She told him, 'That is your magic wand from Jo'. So they all agreed that Jo did have a magic wand and she could make it work for everyone all the time! (And Izzy got her article for homework!) Call Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a FREE assessment and get your child’s own magic wand from Jo.

New Years Resolutions ... in March? Words: Katie Trickett Image: Niamh Weston
N
ew Year's resolutions… perhaps something you've forgotten about or pushed to the back of your mind as we head into our fourth month of the year; have you made any resolutions for 2022? Every new year is powerful and an opportunity to pick up a pen and alter the
script. Maybe as you party popped your way into January 1st, you felt new as a fresh page was turned, and the chance to make a new year's resolution was awaiting your grasp. However, maybe in April, those goals start to feel a little less desirable to complete or even begin. Rationally, January 1st is no better than any other day of the year to start a journey into achieving those goals, so is the needless pressure to improve ourselves unnecessary? Maybe you began to flounder in February or lose motivation in March, but whether it's January, May, or November, it's never too late to make that change or start that new hobby; there's no time like the present. Here at Brookfield, featured resolutions for 2022 included not thinking brutal thoughts (successfully sustained thus far); running more (met, with more consistency: 2-3 5ks per week); drinking more water, moving from a very low bar to drinking a litre and a half a day. It has to be said, though, that some of our number have given up making (and therefore breaking) resolutions. Many people have aspirations such as using social media less, eating healthier, or being more productive, but instead of stopping things, maybe we should start doing something. This could be as simple as trying a new activity, visiting a new place or going on walks. Avoidance goals turned into approach goals could help us maximize our chances of success. Perseverance, of course, will be needed, but we have all shown we've got that in the last two years. So, whether you're taking the first step or the fifth step, it's always a little closer to reaching that milestone, no matter how small or big. M
id-February saw the return of school productions to Brookfield, and this year's focus was all about celebrating, bringing together our community and reflecting upon the past two years. The show was "Back to the '80's the school musical" by Neil Golding. The play is a jukebox musical that tells the story of an American high school in the '80's, and the soundtrack is made up of our favourite 80's hits from Madonna to The Proclaimers. Audiences arrived in 80's clothing and were given glow-sticks upon entry, the sight of 250 glow-sticks waving in unison as the audience shouted back to the "dada-da" chants from "500 miles" was the tonic we all needed. The show was made even more special as the band was led by a talented sixth former and made up of a range of students from across the year groups and all the technical aspects for the show; from lighting to sound and backstage was also studentled – a natural school production in all aspects! The audience's feedback was overwhelming, and it was clear that the show achieved precisely what the staff had set out to achieve – pure theatre joy! Such talent and passion from young people – we can’t wait to see what’s next. Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

'SNAPP-IT'
Smart-health at your fingertips. A new, locally developed selfharm/suicide prevention mobile app for Young People (15-19yr). Text & Image: Jason Cotton
I
n May 2019, we caught up with Jason Cotton and Fraser Longford who established MenTalk, a local charity offering face to face support sessions for those suffering with poor mental health, raising awareness, breaking down stigma, and getting men to talk. Jason described how the energy in the room would change during these meetings ‘as men would turn up at crisis point, desperately needing to be heard and understood without fear or judgement, knowing that what’s said in the room - stays in the room and through their courage and strength, would arrive broken but walk out as warriors’. With five community hero awards and everincreasing volumes, Men-Talk teamed up with Hayley Oxer to launch an online sister group called ‘Broken Beauty’ which provided the community with additional self-harm/suicide prevention support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, helping 100s of men and their families via zoom, facetime sessions and 121 messages, sharing the power of community spirit through its darkest times. Around the same time, the team also looked at helping our younger generation by visiting local schools and colleges delivering life-experiencing, motivational talks to help raise self-awareness. Jason explains "the talk at Brookfield School was such a rollercoaster of emotions and changed our lives forever. Speaking to an assembly of over 200 students was just unreal, as they listened intently you could hear a pin drop with each young face telling a unique and personal story, many of which were hiding real, emotional pain. Watching young Bradley Littlewood then deliver an inspiring, motivational speech followed by an ovation was just incredibly uplifting. Finding out from a parent that their child had planned to end their own life but having sat and watched us in assembly that Page 42
morning had found the courage to speak out to them instead - it’s stuff like that which just breaks you." Jason mentioned that a few weeks later having delivered a talk at Chesterfield College, he noticed a young lad sat all by himself and so went up to chat, explaining what he does and asking him how things were going. Jason explains, "he said things at home were bad, his girlfriend had dumped him, he was drinking and smoking heavily, he couldn’t sleep and was now failing his exams and feeling completely overwhelmed with stress. He said he needed help, but his anxiety stopped him reaching out, the fear of being seen and bullied had stopped him taking down a number from a poster and knowing his mum checks his bag had stopped him from taking a crisis card - he was ready to give up. He then said he had to dash asking me if I could do something to help to which I replied, ‘yeah of course, there’s always something that can be done’. He then said, ‘do you promise?’ which really took me by surprise. After what seemed a lifetime, I replied, ‘yes ok, I promise’. The following week the UK went into lockdown." Working from home, Jason kept thinking about what the young lad had said to him. "It sounds like a cliché," he explains "but a few weeks later I had this dream about building this self-help digital app which gives users a platform to access all the contacts, services, and self-help knowledge available, via their smartphone. A readily available source of information which young people use discreetly and without fear, taking the anxiety out of taking action." In partnership with public health and children’s services, the team have just completed a successful one year pilot delivery of 'snapp-it' to over 250 pupils across schools and colleges in Chesterfield, Erewash and the High Peaks.

Jason comments "we kept the project quiet to ensure the best and most natural response. With no promotional campaign or previous awareness of ‘snapp-it’, it was exciting to be introduced to the students who knew pretty much nothing about us, who sat and listened as we started talking, and to see their reaction, it was really cool. Real-life people sharing real-life experiences, standing up and talking openly to them. Kids are smart and they want the truth so there are no boring slideshows or uncompassionate lecturing, we know what it feels like, we understand what they may be going through, and we just want to help them live happy and fulfilling lives. As a group we connect, and it just works and to then hand out free smart devices for them to keep forever is always a winner." The free 'snapp-it' smart-devices come in the form of wearable wristbands, lanyards, smartcards and phone badges and offer a 32GB USB memory stick so students can store their schoolwork or create your own personalised wellbeing toolkit. Snapping the cleverly concealed QR code takes you to the snapp-it mobile application which provides over 4,500 contextual links for phones, sms, emails, websites, forums, GPS maps, social media pages, mobile app stores and tons of insightful video links of local and national health-care service providers. Through an engaging, intuitive icon driven menu, the user can auto-dial a helpline, auto-send a crisis SMS, auto-create an email to your school nurse, get directions to your nearest A&E, GP surgeries, Page 44

Tools with a Mission (TWAM) Chesterfield
The tools are sent to Coventry for refurbishment and then onto Ipswich for kitting as we send complete trade kits, such as ground workers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, mechanics etc.
Words: Bryn Garland Tools with a Mission is a Christian charity enabling people to earn a living and support themselves and their families. In many countries, people have few skills, little education, and no means of making a living. A switch from aid dependency to selfsufficiency is impossible without help. TWAM started 30 years ago and has been operating in Chesterfield since 2015. It has provided help to become self-sufficient by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. Through a team of volunteers in Chesterfield started by the late David Sanderson through St Thomas’s in Brampton, we send up to four full vans a year of tools and equipment to help transform many lives.
Page 46
We also send out sewing and knitting machines and haberdashery packs to help women set up tailoring businesses. TWAM shipped over 2500 sewing machines in 2021.
Our requests for tools come through our partner organisations in Africa which also provide training and mentoring to the people so the tools can be used effectively in the learning of the many trades which become their lifelines.
So, we encourage you all to look in your sheds and under the stairs to see if you have anything that you no longer use but could transform a life in Africa.
Please email alans@twam.uk or telephone 01246 229683 and see more information about the work of TWAM on the web site.

FOSWPPP The Friends of Stamford Way Play Park Project have been working since September 2021 to provide all new equipment for the play park behind Stanford Way and the end of Bowland Drive. Chris Collard explains, “The plan is not only to provide this new facility but also to clean up and enhance the surrounding park area as much as possible, the present park together with the rubber tarmac, is nearing the end of its useful life.
“The care and maintenance of the play park equipment together with that of the surrounding area will hopefully become an ongoing community responsibility that will promote a much-needed sense of post-Covid local community. We need to get out there with spades, rakes and sturdy backs!” There will be fundraising events to reach our target of £5,000, which amounts to 10% of promised match funding. They also have a justgiving page below, where any donations are most welcome.

Garden Tips
APRIL GARDEN TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts
It should be properly spring and noticeably warmer by the time you read this. We've had a generally mild winter where lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators and more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus. If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes. They are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most types are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero. Lots of vegetables (and many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go directly into the soil, but that may depend on if you've had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil. If you're not confident about growing things from seed, many seedlings will be sold in garden centres. These will have been raised in a benign environment. They won't appreciate going straight outside, especially if it's chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don't keep them in a heated house. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover: tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. If they need watering, it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the soil's surface appears damp; spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres, but they can be pretty expensive for what you get, plus it's far more satisfying to grow things from scratch.
Page 50

If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year, now is the time to save space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops an excellent start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can't produce enough or haven't got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertilisers spread around above where their roots will be and gently forked in – don't overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth sprouts. If you have fruit trees or shrubs, their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will, to some extent, provide their own micro-climate, so they will only suffer minor damage (depending on the severity of the frost) and can be left to take their chances. Lawns should be growing faster now, so they may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first and rake the surface. Protect any newly sown areas from pigeons. There isn't a month when you shouldn't be weeding, but it's much more important if the weather is mild!

The Crooked Spire Musical A thrilling musical murder mystery set in 14th century Chesterfield. This family-friendly show revolves around the story of John, a carpenter who has travelled from York to help with construction of St Mary and All Saints Church spire.
Tragically, the master carpenter is killed and John is accused of the murder. As he gets closer to the truth further murders are committed and John’s life is in danger. John is helped along the way by new friend, Walter, the brother of a local seamstress, Katherine, who has caught John’s eye.
But will our hero survive and justice prevail? Will John win the heart of a good Chesterfield lass? Come and see for yourself at a unique opportunity to see this home-grown ‘West End musical’ directed by Jake Smith who has worked on Sting’s ‘The Last Ship’ and a tour of Sleepy Hollow.
Ashgate Heritage Arts was formed by Chesterfield musicians Martin Coslett and Peter Gray, together with writer, Mary Hennessy from Buxton, in order to bring history to life through exciting live musical theatre performances.
The cast of The Crooked Spire includes established TV and film actors such as Gerard Fletcher from Netflix’s The Crown and Bartlett in BBC’s Get Even and John Conway, from the film The World’s End, directed by Edgar Wright. Eleven year old singing and acting sensation, Eddie Waller, from Chesterfield has been cast in one of the starring roles. “I feel very lucky to have been cast in the role of Walter. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from some professional actors. It’s a great show too, with some catchy songs,” Eddie enthused.

Hipper District Girlguiding As clubs, groups and societies start to meet up face to face again Beckie Jones gives us an update on our local Rainbows, Brownies and Girl Guides. If your youngsters want to get involved, please take a look and get in touch with your local group. Where and when do Rainbows, Brownies and Guides meet?
Groups in the Hipper District meet in the Walton area, there are groups on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. What do we do?
We introduce girls to a world of new opportunities, challenges and fun. Girls go along to camps, holidays, day trips and sleepovers. They get together with their friends at regular meetings where they learn new hobbies, get creative, develop skills and have outdoor adventures. As well as trying activities in their meetings, girls choose badges related to things they want to know more about. Based around having fun, Girlguiding is modern, exciting and helps girls to develop confidence. Do you go on trips?
Yes, we regularly have events which girls can attend outside their usual meetings, one night sleepovers for Rainbows, weekend camps for Brownies and lots of more adventurous activities for Guides including paddle boarding, outdoor cooking and climbing. We also have days trips to different places where Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are invited to come along with their unit and meet girls from other units and sections for a day of fun!
My daughter has additional needs, can she still join Girlguiding?
Yes, of course!! We have wellbeing and adjustment plans to ensure everyone is included in Girlguiding. Lots of our leaders already have personal, professional or guiding experience supporting girls and young women who have SEND (Special Education Needs and/or Disabilities), come and join the fun! How can I get my daughter involved?
Whether it's Rainbows (4-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14) or Rangers (14-18), start her Girlguiding journey by heading to www.girlguiding. org.uk Begin by registering her interest and finding out about units in your area. Adventure, fun and friendship starts here. Girlguiding is unique
We offer a safe, welcoming girl-only space for girls and young women to try new things, help other people and discover their passions and talents. All while having fun with a ready-made group of friends! We're dedicated to girls leading the way – they choose the activities, challenges and events that inspire them, and our volunteers support them to make it happen. Because girls shape and lead everything we do, we know that we're offering the best opportunities and experiences for girls today. For more info contact Beckie on 0774 243 0750.

To Barrow Hill & Beyond! With the Phoenix Band Phoenix Concert Band, a Chesterfield-based community wind band, is proud to celebrate 21 years of providing the local community with the enjoyment of making and listening to live music. During the lock-down period, like many music groups, they embraced the challenges of rehearsals over zoom and emerged as a bigger and stronger ensemble.
Since their return to live rehearsals, they have performed several successful concerts and are busy preparing for a more ambitious event at a much bigger and more exciting venue. Set against a backdrop of steam locomotives at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, they will be taking the audience on a ‘Journey to the Cosmos’ with a space-themed programme, which will include music such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Journey Through Orion and many more.
The concert will take place on Saturday 7th May commencing 7.30 pm. In advance, tickets will be £8 (£4 for children) and £10 cash on the door. They are available from the beginning of April details of how to obtain can be found on the website www.phoenixband.net, the band’s Facebook page, or by telephoning 07729 951815. A supply will also be available to purchase at the Tourist Information office in Chesterfield
New players are always welcome by the band, and there are vacancies for various instruments. If you are an interested adult, playing at grade 5 level or above and willing to commit to weekly rehearsals (Friday evening at Hasland Methodist Church) and playing at local concerts, please contact by email at PhoenixBandCHD@gmail.com or through the website or Facebook page.

on the club which seemed to go against the clubs own, now infamous, “5 year plan” to get into the Championship. Then the rot set in.
Words & Images: Michael South
O
n the 11 May 2015, just shy of seven years ago he left us all heartbroken… but now he's back!
Thursday 10 February was a great day to be a Spireite as Paul Cook was officially announced as James Rowes replacement. "I would not have dropped out of the Football League for any other team in the Conference,” he told the club during his first interview as the new boss. But before all that, a brief history lesson.
Paul Cook originally took charge of the Spireites back in 2012, 25 October to be exact. He came in having previously managed Southport, Sligo Rovers and Accrington Stanley before the previous CFC regime offered him the job at the club, taking over from Tommy Wright who was holding the fort as caretaker manager after John Sheridan resigned. By the close of play in his debut season, the Spireites finished just two points away from the playoffs in League 2. The following 2013/14 campaign however Cookie went one better and clinched the Spireites promotion to League 1 by winning League 2 outright AND taking the club to a Wembley final with the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The next season however, would be the last for Cook as CFC boss despite finishing 6th in League 1 at his first attempt. In 2015 Cookie left to pursue the manager role at Portsmouth FC. At the time it was rumored that the club (owned back then by Dave Allen, before the Community Trust took ownership) had cut the funding budget
Over the next five years, without Cookie, the club were relegated in two back to back seasons, from League 1 to League 2. Then from League 2 to crashing out the football league altogether and landing down in the National League. 2018 was a dark year for the club. Not only did they lose their football league status, but for Jack Lester in his first management role and a Spireite legend returning to manage the club after retiring as a player, was hard to witness. It was under Lester's watch we were relegated down to the National League. Full respect for trying though in my book, given Lester's legacy achieved at the club with the now retired No 14 shirt.
Despite having a succession of 11 different managers (including caretaker managers) between 2015 to 2020 AND facing an identity crisis both on and off the field, Chesterfield were eventually rescued by the Chesterfield Community Trust. On 7 August 2020 and languishing in the relegation zone of the National League the club was sold to the Community Trust and the Spireites were offered a lifeline which immediately seemed to work. The first manager to actually turn the club round under the watchful but respectful eye of the Trust was James Rowe. Rowe spent a total of 15 months at the helm before he parted with the club. But during his tenure Rowe (and the club) recruited a quality and crowd pleasing squad which was left behind after Rowe departed... and that's where Cookie now returns. To finish what he started?
12 Feb - Cook's first game in charge (two days after his announcement). Weymouth away was the fixture and 1-1 was the score. Alex Whittle became the first CFC goal scorer under the new gaffer. The game took a little longer to conclude due to Tshimanga, the goal machine, being stretchered off which pretty much ended his footballing season with a broken leg and a dislocated ankle. And if that sounded bad, it got worse. Paul Cook's first home game was the following week against Solihull Moors, and oh boy was it a memorable one. Not only did we lose 2-3, the first home defeat of the season, but we threw away a 2-0 lead
Wedding photography T: 07807 042655 E: michaelsouthphotography@yahoo.com @MichaelSouthPhotography Page 68
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
(Whittle 14, Asante 20). To add insult to injury, McCourt was also stretchered off with a suspected broken leg just like Tshimanga. So, another false start to Cookies homecoming.
Next up three days later, to continue our consecutive run of home games came Deadpool's Welsh side, Wrexham. But before the game I noticed something. During the previous two games, Whittle had scored first prior to the first aiders being called into play to carry away our wounded. Both now out for the season. Thankfully however, this didn’t happen for a third time. We just lost 0-2. That was Cookie’s second home defeat in a week and CFC's second home defeat of the current season. Paul Cook’s first win finally came at home in front of the BT Sports cameras against Yeovil with Kellermann's stunning half volley curling round the keeper. This was followed by a brilliant 3-1 comeback against Notts Co, again at home with two unexpected Maguire goals three days later to secure another victory for Paul Cook. This, as it turns out, was Cook's 150th game in charge for the Spireites. Mind you, things got back to CFC normal at the next two games Southend and Boreham Wood where we drew 2-2 with a very late equalizer from Southend. Well, technically it was an own goal by Kerr in the 89th minute. Then conceded late against Boreham finishing 1-1 live on BT Sports (sigh).
So, to conclude - Cook's back. We have limited players available and the "Mend and make do'' attitude continues as we throw away valuable points in the last few minutes of games. Whatever, it's going to be frightfully interesting to see where we end up come the 15 May… Gulp. COYBs!
