Intro Hi and welcome to our Autumn edition. This couple of paragraphs is often the hardest part of putting an edition of S40 Local together, and this month is no exception. Usually I'm still waiting on a couple of adverts, I've got changes to make and I've yet to upload the edition to my printers. However, this month, something is very strange! I have all adverts in, all edits have been made and I've uploaded to print... and all looks OK!

It's things like this that make a huge difference and reduce the stress, I might open a beer to celebrate (drink responsibly out Fiverthere)!Fest is coming to town between the 8 and 22 October, a time when businesses are encouraged by national organisation Totally Locally, to put on special offers for a Fiver. We have had some great support, many of our local businesses have put offers on and the ones we know about we've included. There will no doubt be many more businesses that get involved closer to the date so please look out for their posters in windows and on social media. It's tough out there so please take up the offers, every penny you spend locally will help support an independent business on our high street and keep them in business. We also have some energy saving tips from Transition Chesterfield, which I hope you find useful as energy prices continue to rise. As always, we have loads of other stuff so please enjoy, next month will be part one of the Christmas gift guide. that beer!

FIVER FEST: 8 to 22 October

Economy

www.fiverfest.co.ukwww.totallylocally.org

Steph from Steph's Sustainable Stuff with her Fiver Fest offer back in 2020...seems like an age a go!

Independent businesses coming together to highlight their contribution to the great British high street and ChesterfieldChesterfield is taking part. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Totallylocally Page 6

Spending just £5 a week in Chesterfield can make a big difference to our High Streets, the “Fiver Fest” promotes this message.

Over 100 towns and thousands of businesses across the UK are joining together to bring you very special £5 offers, to highlight the contribution to the economy that local shops and businesses bring. It is also an opportunity for those businesses to say “Thank you” to their loyal customers who have supported them through the pandemic. And Chesterfield is joining in.

Even if you don't see a poster, you can still show your support by trying out a new independent business and spending a fiver (or more) with them. Happy shopping.

www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

The community support for local businesses has been amazing during lockdown, but it is easy to slip back into old shopping habits now that things are returning to normal. So, this is a little nudge to say ‘Our local businesses are still here, we are still serving our community and we appreciate your support. And of course we are great value!”.

neighbouring businesses' offers too. Fiver Fest is about everyone working together to promote their town and high street as a whole, instead of individually. If lots of shops have great offers on, the trip to the high street is really worthwhile and Atfun!'the time of going to print, many businesses were still thinking about their Fiver Fest offers but those I do know of are shown opposite. Please look out for Fiver Fest posters between the 8 and 22 October when you'll find many more of Chesterfield's Independent businesses taking part.

Fiver Fest is a free to join campaign, devised and run by Totally Locally, a Grass Roots High Street Organisation that has been helping businesses and High Streets to help themselves since 2010 with incredible results.

Totally Locally founder Chris Sands said “Over 100 towns from the North of Scotland to the South coast of England now take in Fiver Fest events on a regular basis. It’s a campaign that sees incredible offers from £5 massages, to £5 veg boxes, £5 walking tours, £5 lunch deals, £5 ghost story-telling, £5 axe-throwing session, and even £5 Scottish dance lessons! Independent Business owners are really inventive with their offers, and we encourage them to also promote their

Fiver Fest is based around the now famous Totally Locally £5 message: 'If every adult in Chesterfield spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £20.4 Million per year going directly into our local economy. Which can lead to more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy and a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn’t it ?!'

“I don’t go out looking for anything specific. My photos are a result of seeing a combination of colours or textures and the right opportunity.” One of her recent shots taken on a walk in Linacre Woods was featured in the national Guardian newspaper and is still a “pinch me moment” for Katy! She reflects “I think I was lucky to have been inspired by both my parents. My Dad is a painter, now living in France. Growing up we had his work and photos on the walls at home – I always thought how cleverly he caught the combinations of colour and subjects. My Mum, who sadly passed away eight years ago, supported my young enthusiasm for seeing through a lens. I clearly recall how she allowed me to drag her out of bed before dawn during our holidays, to accompany me on taking some scenery shots as the sun came up.”

Katy’s love of sunrises and sunsets has endured and feature among her collection of images, along with shots of Walton Dam, Linacre, and other Peak District places as well as holiday venues. She has been invited to exhibit some of her favourite pictures in Holymoorside on Sunday 9 October, with a preview following a “Sounds & Scenes” Concert on Saturday 8th October. Helped with the choice by husband, Chris and niece Amelie, Katy has selected a number of attractive cards, calendars and mounted pictures to display, discuss and for immediate sale or to Sharingorder. the exhibition with Katy’s Photography are:

Cover Artist Focus Katyon: Strudwick

Katy Strudwick is well-known and greatly respected in the local classical music scene as a recital performer, accompanist, flute and piano teacher and ABRSM music examiner. Following her Music Degree at Royal Holloway University in Surrey, Katy has been teaching and performing in and around Chesterfield for 20 years. Her principal instrument is the flute, and she is also an accomplished pianist. During 2020/21 when tuition and live music events were either not allowed or greatly restricted, she took time out to develop a passion for photography. Katy’s stunning images reflect the magic of the Derbyshire landscape which, amazingly, she now mainly captures on her iPhone. Whilst we looked through some of her ever-expanding portfolio, she told me that her interest began when she was quite young. “I remember having a camera as a teenager and the excitement of capturing a moment in time. Of course, using and processing film was a different experience 35 years ago; now we can see our digital pictures immediately!” Her images are just as she sees them – without any modification, which makes them all the more remarkable and a testament to her eye for a composition. However, this requires considerable patience, perseverance, and a little good luck for the right conditions. She says, “I enjoy getting up early to catch the best light or to see the dew on a web or frost on a leaf before it is disturbed, and the quiet of that time of day is quite special.” She continues “I also love walking in the countryside and was introduced to the Walk 1000 Miles challenge by a friend last year (walk1000miles. co.uk). I completed the virtual Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge – and have continued the habit, usually setting out from my home in Somersall. Photography is the perfect walking Katycompanion!”explains

Unhampered is about supporting Chesterfield's independent businesses. Phase one was the launch of an online directory of Chesterfield’s fabulous independent shops, restaurants, food suppliers and more, the businesses we love, all in one place. The Unhampered online directory showcases over 200 local businesses and is a great place for you to seek out the indpendents and support them, but it's also a place that helps visitors to town find the best we have to offer. We have a number of Founder Members as shown on these pages, please go and visit them; Adorn Jewellers, Bottle & Thyme, Defeye Creative, Ginspired, Ingmans, Libby's, Pizza Pi, Odyssey Greek Restaurant, S40 & S41 Local Magazines,Tallbird Records, The Cafe at Libby's, The Cheese Factor, The Vintage Tea Rooms, and Vanishing Point Records. Over the past few months we've delivered our Unhampered map, featuring a selection of hand picked selection independents. Maps have been really well received and distributed to founder members, hotels and the tourist information centre. We're presently working with Chesterfield market traders to produce market specific maps listing the great range of traders we have on the various markets in town.

We'll be supporting Totally Locally's Fiver Fest through our channels and of course we will personally be trying to partake in as many £5 offers as we can.

“The development has been selling really well,” says Jess. “We only have a few properties left that are due to complete in 2022, it's another success story for people wanting to get onto the property ladder or expand into a stylish larger home.”

“We have also helped run a Christmas card competition with the school, which was great fun.”

Walton Peaks Linden Homes delivering a new quality, community place you can call home. Chapman

Linden Homes is close to completing the new development of over a hundred new, energy efficient homes at Walton Peaks on part of the Walton Hospital site on Whitecotes Lane. I caught up with Marketing Manager Jess Sidwell from Linden Homes to see how things were going.

The Walton Peaks development consists of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, semi-detached and detached. The site is a mixture of open market, shared ownership and affordable homes, making an attractive community just over a mile from Chesterfield town centre.

If you’re in the market for your first home or moving to a new larger home visit the site on Whitecotes Lane or check out the website for details. If you don’t manage to secure one of the last homes available for 2022, you can sign up to their mailing list for their new releases expected at the end of this year for completion in 2023.

You can also see Linden Home's logo on local sports teams through sponsorship of Brampton Rovers Under 8's. A little further afield, Bramley Sunnyside U10’s team in Rotherham are sponsored by the Vistry Partnerships side of the business, where the site manager's son plays.

As I type, the properties left include the three-bed ‘Bloomfield’, a three-storey house with integral garage, three beds and three bathrooms. “The space in these properties is fantastic,” explains Jess. “Perhaps a little deceiving from the outside.

With living space spread over three floors it allows us to deliver a large kitchen/diner and separate lounge on the first floor, full height floor to ceiling windows in the lounge and a third storey bedroom adds to the appeal and it enjoys the benefit of an integral garage, shower room, WC and bedroom on the ground floor. “The three bedroomed ‘Elliot’ is a more traditional build over two floors, but it enjoys a large living room/diner that opens out onto the rear garden.”

T: 01246 641247 E: lindenhomes.co.uk/WaltonPeakswaltonpeaks@lindenhomes.co.uk www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

As well as local direct engagement with schools, Linden Homes under their other arm of the business, Vistry Partnerships, joined the Chesterfield Champions organisation and have attended Springwell College where they spent some time with year nine and ten Design Technology students. “This was really appreciated by the students,” explains Jess. “We covered everything that happens on one of our developments, starting with initial processes and designs through to the more practical side from digging foundations to the final handover with the new owners. We were also able to provide information about how colleges can get involved with us through apprenticeship schemes.”

“Linden Homes is always keen to support the local community around our developments and we have loved the project ran with Walton Peaks

I was introduced to BWE by John King, a fellow tenant at West Studios and past cover artist who is the longest member of the staff team at Bolsover. We were discussing BWE after John read our recent piece on High Ashes Rural Project, so I popped up for a chat.

BWE produce a range of outdoor products which you’ll see alongside local trails and paths; bench seats, picnic tables etc. installed and dug into the ground to make them attractive, long lasting and Allunremovable!ofthetimber used in projects is from local estates and parklands, any trees used are felled for genuine reasons not just for projects. “For instance, when Sherwood Forest relocated their visitor centre, they had to remove a number of trees which were gifted to us,” says John.

“The project started in 2000, a small Derbyshire Social Services supported environmental project to provide opportunities to adults with learning disabilities to go out with the Derbyshire Ranger Services, to help with pond clearances, hedge cutting, thinning of small trees on old pit sites etc,” explains John. “The guys were using bow saw and hedge cutters to support the rangers and were based on our site at the Business Park in Bolsover. Back then it was a small team with a single funded staff member.”

“We maintain the Five Pits Trail, Peter Fidler Park and Snipe bog which has a meadow, so we cut the grass and rake it aside to stop the long grass depleting the ground of nutrients, to encourage wildflowers to grow. At Peter Fidler Park we thin the woodland areas, to ensure the woodland floor gets enough light which allows the woods to Thereflourish.”will typically be a works team of up to 13 team members taking on a variety of tasks each day. The staff are Lantra (the National Training Organization for the Land Based Industries) Land and first aid trained to ensure people are working safely and are picking up skills. The project ensures people are able to work safely with the tools available allowing a real mix of skills on site, all year round.

“Werequirements.havetwo strands to our work,” says John.

I was impressed with BWE, the workshop was immaculate! The products for sale include, chopping boards (much cheaper than commercial products, John was keen to highlight), tea light holders which are very popular at events, stools and tables, the handmade stools seemed a real bargain at £49, each one unique and lovingly finished. BWE also have logs and kindling available to collect or for delivery, check out their website for more info and prices. I felt uplifted when I left the project, a small team of staff, a handful of volunteers and some very happy adults. A round of applause for BWE please!

“The field team are out and about maintaining woodlands, paths, hedge cutting and general conservation work for a variety of clients including Derbyshire County Council, Bolsover District Council, Parish Councils, local associations, we also work for private individuals that have their own “Ourwoodlands.teamnow have skills in operating chainsaws, petrol hedge cutters, petrol brush cutters, a chipping machine, an industrial flailing machine, a portable milling saw, plus others.

Bolsover Woodlands Enterprise (BWE) is one of those places I love, described on their website as ‘a social enterprise that manages and protects woodlands in Derbyshire. All our team members are adults who have a learning disability.’ A short and simple description, yet the place really is so much more than that.

Today the enterprise has a staff of seven people working with 35 team members who spend between one and three days a week working with BWE, depending on their skills and personal

Alongside the field team there are a few people in the workshop working on smaller projects. “This smaller team works with me,” says John. “We make tables, stools and smaller items, door stops, chopping boards, door wedges, cedar blocks as insect repellents and a range of other small wooden products which are sold from the “Overworkshop.time the team have built larger items, but we now stick to a range of items the adults can make almost entirely unsupported, I just need to do some of the marking out for them.”

“We have a portable sawmill, so if wood is very large, we are able to mill it into planks on site.”

I was keen to understand how adults make their way to the project and how it was funded. “We’re linked with various local agencies but operate independently, people come down with their carers to see if the project is right for them. We have a limited number of places and operate a waiting list, demand is high, at present we have just one “Thespace.project receives some funds from Derbyshire County Council, generates income from contracted work, plus the smaller products are sold through festivals, shows and from the centre” explains John. "We aim to self-generate much of the money needed to run the project and support the team members, as a Social Enterprise all the income we generate is for the benefit of the team members.

The notice prevents water being taken at St Helena’s flood gate (the start of the waterway) and has an impact on the use of the canal, basically preventing any use on the water. Rod was looking forward to getting the trip boats running again.

Rod explained how the funds will be used, "The £5.3m is fantastic news for the area. We will be restoring an extra half mile of canal up to the river Doe Lea. We will be building a new return lock with a 500m siphon pipe which will bring the water to the same level on both the east and west sides of the old Hartington railway bridge. We will also build two new bridges.

"We recognise that some sections of the current towpath in Chesterfield are narrow and have right angle bends which cause issues with users. Walkers and cyclists will be the first to benefit," says Rod.

"With extra funds, we could restore the section from Staveley basin to Spinkhill, but the issue is with maintenance once it’s operative. Who picks up the bill?" questions Rod. "Any new section needs to be subject to a managed agreement, the completion would produce a 7.5 mile stretch from Chesterfield to Renishaw but still wouldn’t connect to the basin at Chesterfield Waterside. "We work with landowners, authorities and agencies, and the support from councillors and the community has been fabulous, but we need to continue the drive."

If you fancy a trip on the canal, their trip boats operate from Tapton Lock and Hollingwood Hub where you can enjoy an afternoon tea and of course Christmas will soon be here so look out for their Santa YouCruises.could also just hop on your bike and take a trip out to Rother valley, the first section follows the towpath from just along Brimington Road.

hesterfield Canal Trust have recently received £5.3m of funding which comes as part of the Staveley town deal. I’m sitting with Rod Auton from the Canal Trust who’s quite excited to tell me about the developments that will result.

The trust will continue seeking out funds as things like the aqueduct will be expensive as there is no road access to the site and overhead power lines cross the site. “The first work people will see is drilling to add a new bridge across the Arkwright trail and work to move a vast pile of clay which has been gifted to the trust by Suon Ltd. It is currently at Foxlow to the north side of the basin, Rod was clearly very pleased with this gift… I must admit to not quite sharing the same excitement for what, to me, is a huge hill that needs to be moved!

As we met the canal had a ‘hands off flow’ notice which was coming to an end.

"We can start work on designs for a new aqueduct to run the canal over the Doe Lea River which will be a wonderful draw for the crowds, running for 32m and sitting at a height of 10m above the ground."

I’d just like to say a personal thanks to Rod and the team at the trust. I don’t own a boat or paddle the waters but I’m often cycling along the towpaths as part of a loop around Chesterfield and simply wouldn’t be able to do this without their hard work. Thanks Rod. chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk@cctrust

Rod points out that plans have had to be reined in as rising costs mean the funds won’t go as far as originally thought.

The trust was formed in 1997 arising from the Chesterfield Canal Society formed in 1976 and our volunteer Work Party has worked in Derbyshire every weekend since 1988 plus many weekdays and can show 34 years of effort. "It shows commitment and a long-term future but it’s still difficult to guarantee plans," says Rod. "Work is often slow, we have a moveable rubber dam that inflates with water which allows us to work on 30m sections to identify the leaks at Renishaw and put a liner in the correct place, slow tiresome work."

"There is also £2.2m allocated for Staveley Waterside (aka Staveley Town Basin) secured by DCC.

"The towpath to Renishaw will be upgraded to a multiuser trail and then we are hoping to take this through the Norbriggs Cutting, which is presently a right of way but needs work. These changes will significantly extend the cycle network.

The Chesterfield Canal is 46 miles in total to the river Trent and there is about 8.5 still to be done, Rod is confident this will all be restored, the group's target year was 2027, but as they never know where funding will come from this is getting a bit close.

"I didn't scream, I laughed when we went down these huge inclines but that's because I trust her, she is a great driver. After we had been round a few times she said, 'right it's your turn now' and I took Prescilla down some inclines I didn't think I'd do, and I loved it," smiled Marcella.

So, how did this all come about I hear you ask?

"I went home (to France) for the first time in nearly three years, three weeks ago, for a long overdue catch-up with Helen. We went for dinner catching up with everything she's done, and mentioned that she wasn't sure if she'd got the right navigator and, I'd had a few glasses of wine, and I said I'd come," says HelenMarcella.isnostranger to the desert and has completed several rallies in the past. She will undertake most of the driving whilst Marcella navigates and fixes any mechanical issues that may arise. Understandably, she’s a little nervous. The Rally positively encourages the participation of female only teams, empowering women from all over the globe to step out of their comfort zones and grow through adversity. It aims to raise over £20,000 for Cancer Research which Marcella and Helen will contribute to, with the help of our lovely readers of course. "The fact that we can raise a lot of money is a driving force, no pun intended. A lot of rallies are businesses, the aim is usually to make money but this one is 100% to the charities, apart from the expenses, the money raised by you entering the rally goes to charity, that's quite pioneering actually," exclaims Marcella

Various mini-challenges have been set along the way including the fastest tyre change and blindfolded navigation. “The others had all been in bands before, all I’d done was acoustic gigs by myself, the first gigs were quite small which allowed me to develop confidence on stage. Now I enjoy being on stage, ask me to dance at a wedding and there’s no chance but stick a guitar in my hands and I’m ready to perform!” Describe your sound. It’s got elements of 60s rock, think The Beatles and The Who, but at the same token has a psychedelic 90s groove to it. A combination of the Stone Roses and the Verve. It’s a pretty unique sound” says Connor. “Jasper’s music taste is different to mine and Elliot’s. He’s into Mac Demarco, Blur

From their first gig to performing at Leeds Festival in five months, we catch up with local band LUNARCA. Introducing LUNARCA; a locally based Indie Rock four-piece band, inspired by the 60s their sound is raw and energetic, their influence of the era is showcased in their songs with Beatlesque harmonies and jangly, melodic guitars.

The band is made up of singer Connor Berry, guitarist Elliot Britton, bassist Jasper Elliott and drummer Tom Stafford. As well as the 60s, they also take inspiration from the 90s with bands such as the Stone Roses and Verve. Where did it start? “We all go to the same college,” says Connor. “I was in a rehearsal room in college one day when Elliot walked in, he heard I was a singer and asked if I wanted to help form a band. Jasper joined shortly after when we saw him perform at a gig, and Tom we found on social media. The name LUNARCA came randomly months prior to forming the band, I came up with it in case I ever joined a band."

“It was strange going from my bedroom to a stage, it was new to me,” explains Connor.

and Reef. Which is why I think our sound is so original, because our music taste is so diverse. It shouldn’t really work, but it does.”

The band have been recording at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield and their single ‘Runaway’ is due for release on 23 September, scan QR code Youbelow.can hear LUNARCA live at Sidney & Matilda in Sheffield on the 17 September, 21 October at Sidney & Matilda supporting The Haciendas and on 29 October at the Blue Note in Derby supporting The Public Eye. “We recently had two girls do a three-hour drive to see us at a festival in the Peace Gardens, they’d found us on social media and wanted to see us live which was just crazy.” Give me a few fave tracks, bands you’re listening to now and a summertime track. “This changes so much depending on my mood. ‘The Word’ by The Beatles, ‘Life on Mars’ by David Bowie, these match my mood today.

“My Dad was an Elvis fan and I’ve picked up on the love of the Beatles, I’m a massive fan of their more psychedelic tracks from Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour."

starting to see audience members singing along with the lyrics which is fab, people bring their friends, and our audience is growing.

first gig was at Sidney & Matilda in Sheffield on 2 March 2022’ Connor adds “It’s pretty mental to see how far we’ve come in less than 5 months, the even crazier part is that we’re performing at this year's Leeds Festival, so in five months we’ve gone from doing our first ever gig to performing at one of the biggest festivals in the “We’reworld.”

Music

How does the band work creatively? "We work together, I’ll bring a finished song to the rest of the lads on my acoustic guitar, and then they’ll pretty much just play it back on the spot, but add all sorts of different elements. And it’s the same with whoever brings a song to the table as we all write. It really is a massive team effort, we all have a vision of what we want a song to sound like but we don’t normally plan what we’re going to do, it just ‘LUNARCA’shappens.”

Ed: An opportunity for someone perhaps?

"For my summertime track I’ll offer up The Beatles ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, it’s one of my favourite So,songs.”isthere a plan? “I have a massive plan, and we all have visions of where we’re wanting to go.

I’m constantly booking us for gigs, talking to people within the industry and getting our name out on social media, I seem to have become the band manager which is quite a fun role. Next year, we’re hoping to make an appearance at some festivals, YNOT is one of our goals and so is Tramlines as we would be representing Sheffield.

“There aren’t many music venues in Chesterfield unfortunately. We’ve played at The County Music Bar quite a few times and have always enjoyed gigging there, but Sheffield is notorious for its music scene, so we’re trying our best to make a name for ourselves there as we love it so much."

• Switch appliances off when not using.

It's unlikely that you've not heard about rising costs, in particular our energy prices are set to nearly treble. Here are some changes we can all make taken from a flyer produced by Transition Chesterfield.

• Warm the 'core' of the house only and keep unused rooms cooler by shutting the doors and turning the radiators off or low until warmth is needed.

• Put reflector foil behind radiators on external walls to reflect warmth back into the room and fit a shelf over the radiator to divert rising heat from the window.

• Install solar panels to generate electricity (save £475/year).

• Consider an air source heat pump for well insulated homes. If you are worried about your energy bills, call 0800 677 1332 for free impartial advice from the Warmer Derby and Derbyshire service. ‘unbroken.solutions’ explores the impact and responses to the environmental damage from our electrical and electronic waste. The project explores responses from multiple perspectives. It covers countries where a repair culture still exists, to countries creating city-wide solutions, to communities and volunteer groups creating local responses and the independent repairers. Underpinning all of this are those who seek to change the laws and regulations to give us all the ‘right to Unbrokenrepair’.Solutions is the brain child of critically accliamed photographer Mark A Phillips. His photography is largely focussed on ‘constructive’ stories about people and groups taking action to address societal problems; with an emphasis on the environment and sustainability. His current projects focus on the importance of repair and reuse as a response to waste and creating a sustainable future. He originally studied engineering, has a PhD researching innovation and social ecosystems, developing multi-perspective approaches to understanding emerging and complex systems. That research now informs his photography projects. His work has been published online and in print in various major newspapers and magazines and shown at exhibitions in the UK, Europe and USA.

All these things happen at a Transition Chesterfield Repair Café – and the Café means exactly that: we serve refreshments too! Transition Chesterfield runs the Repair Café. Repairing broken or damaged items can save time and money! Items can be put back into use and given an extended lifespan. This way we also send less waste to landfill and use up fewer resources when replacement items don’t need to be bought. Watching and, where possible, taking part in a repair helps you develop your skills and become more confident in repairing damaged items yourself. Less waste! Less pollution! Less money! Advising on how best to use your belongings, particularly electronic devices, can mean you take full advantage of all their options and services, thus saving you time and effort. Our fixers can often show you how to maintain your items so they last longer. We also advise on how to dispose of them when they cannot be repaired.

Many of you may know that, thanks to the generosity of the local community contributing to the Justgiving page and the success of the Jubilee Event at Maggie May’s, the target amount of £5,000 was reached, meaning that we can begin the necessary talks with the council, play park manufacturers and most importantly apply for the other 90% needed through funding. As part of the application process, we, as a community need to provide evidence of support from local residents. These can be in the form of emails, Facebook messages or Posts or even handwritten letters. Emails to hotmail.comfriendsofstanfordwayplaypark@ please. Letters can be dropped in to Chris @19 Stanford Way, Chesterfield S41 7NH. The messages/letters do not have to be long and wordy, but simply voice your support for saving the park and installing new equipment. You could mention the current state of the park and the desperate need for refurbishment. Maybe you have memories of the park growing up and wish to state your desire to see it remain in use for many more years for your children and grandchildren. However, whatever you write will greatly help. We really do need YOU to help us save our park.

Over the last two years, local volunteers from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire, known as Feeding Together Bolsover and Chesterfield, haven’t let the pandemic stop them supporting families. They have been providing remote support and running regular ‘Parent in the Park’ walks at Poolsbrook Country Park. The organisation will also be running sessions at Staveley Healthy Living Centre and Bolsover Children’s Centre. To find out what exciting things they’ve got coming up, check out their Facebook pages. @bfnderbyshire@Bolsoverbfgroup Page 46 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk

“I am so glad that we were able to bring Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire back to the University of Derby in Chesterfield, they make such a big difference to parents - particularly in the early days of being a parent. It’s thanks to the University that we have been able to offer the group such a fantastic venue,” says Jennifer Raschbauer from Community Chesterfield.

Dr Jennifer Wild, an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at Oxford University and friend of the Oddfellows, describes friends as ‘precious protectors’, and something you can never put a price on. “Friendship is a wonderful thing," she said. "Spending time with people who share our values and beliefs can be motivating, and laughter with friends is proven to improve our mood. “But friendship goes much deeper than that. The support that good friends provides can also be protective. Those with close companions are less likely to suffer from depression. Friends offer perspectives more compassionate than our own, helping to interrupt self-critical thinking and improve our problem-solving skills.”

Oddfellows Social Organiser, Trudy Ford, says; “When you’re stretched financially, you’ve no choice but to look at how you can spend less.

To celebrate national Friendship Month this September, Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows is holding several inexpensive taster events, specifically designed to make newcomers feel at ease and give residents the chance to experience the supportive benefits of joining a friendship group.

As living costs continue to rise, local friendship group, Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows, is urging residents to not cut back on socialising.

“We want to remind people that socialising doesn’t need to be expensive. It’s not where you get together that matters, simply that you’re doing it.

“Nobody should be without company if they want it,” added Trudy. “If you’re finding it difficult to socialise in later life, or you’d like to build or extend your friendship circle, groups such as ours are a great way to meet like-minded people locally. We’d love to see you.”

If you're interested in attending an Oddfellows Friendship Month taster event, or to receive a free events pack, call Trudy Ford on 01246 273076 or 07900 184696 or e: trudy.ford@oddfellows.co.uk

Further event and online open day details can be found at www.friendshipmonth.com, as well as a competition to win one of two Champagne afternoon tea gift boxes. For Dr Wild’s series of friendship advice blogs: www.oddfellows.co.uk/news.

Investing In Friendship Press Release: Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows

As well as regular social events, members of Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows can access financial benefits and welfare support, with a dedicated care helpline, citizens advice team, and a travel club. Oddfellows membership costs from £25 a year.

“We saw the effect spending less time in the company of others had on our members during the pandemic and we need to make sure that as we face another difficult time we stay in touch.”

Research undertaken by the Oddfellows showed that those aged 60-plus in the UK have on average four close friends, with three percent saying they don’t have any. Nine out of 10 (87 percent) agreed that friends improved the quality of their life.

Up and coming events include; a ‘Petanque and Picnic’ event, on Monday 12 Sept. at Eastwood Park, Hasland at 11am - free of charge, just bring a picnic - and a lunch, at The Hurt Arms, Derby Road, Ambergate at 12.30pm on Monday 26 Sept where you simply pay for your food.

The not-for-profit group has 300 local members, many older or retired, and is becoming increasingly concerned about the impact any reduced social contact might be having on people’s mental health and wellbeing, lessons learnt from the Pandemic.

The August 2022 study also revealed how 68 percent of over-60s felt they could rely on their friends in times of need, with 65 percent agreeing that friends help them to get through difficult times.

Few singers can enjoy such a long career as Valerie Crick, who has marked her 51 years as a founder member of the Chesterfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society which was formed in 1971 at Central Methodist rehearsal rooms, Saltergate.

The Society had around 40 members back then and more recently gained a reputation for excellent productions of the Savoy Operas at The Pomegranate Theatre. Elizabeth Jepson, herself a member of the group for nearly 50 years said: "It has been a remarkable achievement to reach this landmark because many towns have lost their Gilbert and Sullivan Societies. For us still to be around is great, although it is getting harder each year to attract the audiences and to find new members."

AUTUMN TIPS Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts

Keep harvesting runner and French beans, many vegetables (including courgettes) will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. There comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground.

Remember that next year's fruit will appear on the previous year’s growth, e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants.

is a good time to think about ordering new fruit trees and moving existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm. Keep on top of tidying jobs but leave as many ornamental seed-heads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs.

When your crops of tomatoes etc. have finished, thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.

Words:

GARDENING

f you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.

Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this Coveryear.

Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants.

ponds with nets before heavy leaffall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot.

Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic and continue to sow winter lettucesstart in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a Nowfew).

When leaves have fallen then this is the time to give your soft fruit, blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids some shaping while they are dormant.

Words & Images: Michael South Welcome back my fellow Spireites. The friendly games are done. The signings have been made and the squad has been assembled for the assault on the 2022/23 footballing season... So, what could possibly go wrong? Well nothing, for the first 27 minutes anyway. The opening game of the season was away at Dorking Wanderers and midway through the first half our new keeper Covolan was sent off for charging out of his area and lashing out at a defender after clearing the ball. So with ten men and no substitute keeper on the bench, up stepped Ollie Banks to don the keeper's jersey and swap midfield for the bloke between the posts. It was all going so well up until that point too as Asante became the first Spireite scorer of the new campaign after just 18 minutes. It got a bit more hopeful just before halftime when Dobra made it 2-0, so all looked back on track. But that all changed in the second half. Dorking, freshly promoted to the National League, clawed back 2 goals in 10 minutes, 67th and the 77th minute to level the game. Then to add to it all, on the 96th min, Horton was then sent off for time wasting during a throw-in. This was later rescinded however when CFC appealed the decision, claiming the second yellow card given to Horton was for mistaken identity. So that was something I guess. The game ended with a point a piece, at 2-2. So not the greatest start to a footballing season especially as the unexpected hunt was now on to sign another goalkeeper for the next fixture. After a short search though the club signed Fitzsimons as the new goalie. Next up came the first home tie of the season to Aldershot. This did go as planned and it ended

Wedding photography

Next up came a short drive down the M1 to Nottingham for Notts County. This, like the Dorking game two weeks prior, ended 2-2. After being 2 goals up the Spireites seemingly switched off in the second half and conceded 2 goals within 4 minutes. No keeper was sent off though this time. But we still need to see our games out when ahead if we wanna dominate this league. At the time of writing, we've just played Barnet and not only did we smash them 3-1 at home but Tshimanga scored his first of the season fresh from the bench, newly signed Jesurun Uchegbulam made his professional debut for the Spireites from Matlock Town. But, most importantly… We ended the night firmly Top. Of. The. League!!! Plus, if you've noticed, all the goalscorers so far for Chesterfield have come from all positions, which is a huge positive for us. Cook has crafted an attack minded squad of players, like he said he would when he arrived. So, unlike last season, we aren't

Page 70 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Sport

The Spireites then played some of the best football I've seen at the club for many a year. Paul Cook has put together a fantastic squad. It really does look like they really do wanna play for Cookie and win the league outright. Well, accept for the keeper perhaps. I've not seen passing and movement for ages as good as what I saw that Tuesday night. And the goals...Outstanding!

Jeff King and Ollie Banks both got on the score sheet in the first half and for a while I heard the Kop sing "We are top of the league!" I really felt like we were back and heading in the right direction, all without Tshimanga, who was on the bench and not needed.

A New Season

with a Spireite win, courtesy of Mandeville. He scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half. Another home game followed three days later with Deadpool's Welsh side Wrexham coming to town. They sold out the entire away end and boy did they let us know they were there! Before the game even started they were very vocal. The Welsh like to sing! Shame then they decided to throw a red smoke grenade on the pitch in front of their own keeper just as he arrived on the pitch at the goal in front of his travelling fans.

Happy COYBs!Days!

heavily reliant on Kabby to score the goals. Hence him not named in the starting lineup and being subbed on against Notts County. How much in technical terms have we improved if Cook can say to Webb or Roberts "Nah, we don't need him yet"? Now don't go thinking for a minute that we don't really need him, because we do. The season's only young. It's still in its short shorts, and we are bound to have our fair share of injuries as the games go by. No, he'll play his part and bag many more goals as the season unfolds, of that I am certain. So, to recap. We are still unbeaten and the Kop once again can proudly chant "We Are Top Of The League" at the time of writing.

Although when I got overexcited, often you’d give me a funny look, My time with you has been short, And that’s such a shame, I’ve missed out on so much but no one’s to blame Because you’d been here long before I got here, And as you leave we will shed a tear, remembering… Your tiny feet and busy hands on school on that first day, At four years old, you’d make new friends and learn to work and play. You’d run around, you’d play with toys, sometimes forget share, Your teachers helped you to work it out by showing love and care. My first Y6 as a Head teacher, I’m so proud of all that you’ve done, You’re absolutely faaaaaan tastic, amazingly fun, you’ve been Walton Holymoorside through and through right from the start, And you’ll always be with us, right here in our hearts!

Words: Mr Holmes

Y6 Leavers Poem

You made me feel so welcome, as your new Head, With every fist pump, every nod and every kind word that you’ve said, You always greet me with a smile, with a wave, You showed me great traits you were kind, caring and brave, Any opportunities to teach you, immediately I took, Although when I got overexcited, often you’d give me a funny look, My time with you has been short, And that’s such a shame, I’ve missed out on so much but no one’s to blame Because you’d been here lon g before I got here, And as you leave we will shed a tear, remembering… Your tiny feet and busy hands on school on that first day, At four years old, you’d make new friends and learn to work and play. You’ve been Walton Holymoorside through and th rough right from the start, This was meant for our Summer edition but had to be pulled at the last minute so apologies for it being 'out of season' but it was just so fitting it needed to be shared. The fantastic Mr Holmes has just completed his first year as Headmaster at Walton Holymoorside Primary School. For all the year 6 leavers he wrote and performed this poem. Well done to all the year 6 leavers and to Mr Holmes on a wonderful first year at MrWHPS.Holmes is pictured with Eva Anstey, one of our fab regular contributors.
