Intro Hi and welcome to our Autumn edition. This couple of paragraphs is often the hardest part of putting an edition of S40 Local together, and this month is no exception. Usually I'm still waiting on a couple of adverts, I've got changes to make and I've yet to upload the edition to my printers. However, this month, something is very strange! I have all adverts in, all edits have been made and I've uploaded to print... and all looks OK!

It's things like this that make a huge difference and reduce the stress, I might open a beer to celebrate (drink responsibly out Fiverthere)!Fest is coming to town between the 8 and 22 October, a time when businesses are encouraged by national organisation Totally Locally, to put on special offers for a Fiver. We have had some great support, many of our local businesses have put offers on and the ones we know about we've included. There will no doubt be many more businesses that get involved closer to the date so please look out for their posters in windows and on social media. It's tough out there so please take up the offers, every penny you spend locally will help support an independent business on our high street and keep them in business. We also have some energy saving tips from Transition Chesterfield, which I hope you find useful as energy prices continue to rise. Over 100 towns and thousands of businesses across the UK are joining together to bring you very special £5 offers, to highlight the contribution to the economy that local shops and businesses bring. It is also an opportunity for those businesses to say “Thank you” to their loyal customers who have supported them through the pandemic. And Chesterfield is joining in.

“I don’t go out looking for anything specific. My photos are a result of seeing a combination of colours or textures and the right opportunity.” One of her recent shots taken on a walk in Linacre Woods was featured in the national Guardian newspaper and is still a “pinch me moment” for Katy! She reflects “I think I was lucky to have been inspired by both my parents. My Dad is a painter, now living in France. Growing up we had his work and photos on the walls at home – I always thought how cleverly he caught the combinations of colour and subjects. My Mum, who sadly passed away eight years ago, supported my young enthusiasm for seeing through a lens. I clearly recall how she allowed me to drag her out of bed before dawn during our holidays, to accompany me on taking some scenery shots as the sun came up.”

Katy Strudwick is well-known and greatly respected in the local classical music scene as a recital performer, accompanist, flute and piano teacher and ABRSM music examiner. Following her Music Degree at Royal Holloway University in Surrey, Katy has been teaching and performing in and around Chesterfield for 20 years. Her principal instrument is the flute, and she is also an accomplished pianist. During 2020/21 when tuition and live music events were either not allowed or greatly restricted, she took time out to develop a passion for photography. Katy’s stunning images reflect the magic of the Derbyshire landscape which, amazingly, she now mainly captures on her iPhone. Whilst we looked through some of her ever-expanding portfolio, she told me that her interest began when she was quite young. “I remember having a camera as a teenager and the excitement of capturing a moment in time. Of course, using and processing film was a different experience 35 years ago; now we can see our digital pictures immediately!” Her images are just as she sees them – without any modification, which makes them all the more remarkable and a testament to her eye for a composition. However, this requires considerable patience, perseverance, and a little good luck for the right conditions. She says, “I enjoy getting up early to catch the best light or to see the dew on a web or frost on a leaf before it is disturbed, and the quiet of that time of day is quite special.” She continues “I also love walking in the countryside and was introduced to the Walk 1000 Miles challenge by a friend last year (walk1000miles. co.uk). I completed the virtual Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge – and have continued the habit, usually setting out from my home in Somersall. Photography is the perfect walking Katycompanion!”explains

The Walton Peaks development consists of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, semi-detached and detached. The site is a mixture of open market, shared ownership and affordable homes, making an attractive community just over a mile from Chesterfield town centre.

As well as local direct engagement with schools, Linden Homes under their other arm of the business, Vistry Partnerships, joined the Chesterfield Champions organisation and have attended Springwell College where they spent some time with year nine and ten Design Technology students. “This was really appreciated by the students,” explains Jess. “We covered everything that happens on one of our developments, starting with initial processes and designs through to the more practical side from digging foundations to the final handover with the new owners. We were also able to provide information about how colleges can get involved with us through apprenticeship schemes.”

I was introduced to BWE by John King, a fellow tenant at West Studios and past cover artist who is the longest member of the staff team at Bolsover. We were discussing BWE after John read our recent piece on High Ashes Rural Project, so I popped up for a chat.

“The project started in 2000, a small Derbyshire Social Services supported environmental project to provide opportunities to adults with learning disabilities to go out with the Derbyshire Ranger Services, to help with pond clearances, hedge cutting, thinning of small trees on old pit sites etc,” explains John. “The guys were using bow saw and hedge cutters to support the rangers and were based on our site at the Business Park in Bolsover. Back then it was a small team with a single funded staff member.”

“We maintain the Five Pits Trail, Peter Fidler Park and Snipe bog which has a meadow, so we cut the grass and rake it aside to stop the long grass depleting the ground of nutrients, to encourage wildflowers to grow. At Peter Fidler Park we thin the woodland areas, to ensure the woodland floor gets enough light which allows the woods to Thereflourish.”will typically be a works team of up to 13 team members taking on a variety of tasks each day. The staff are Lantra (the National Training Organization for the Land Based Industries) Land and first aid trained to ensure people are working safely and are picking up skills. The project ensures people are able to work safely with the tools available allowing a real mix of skills on site, all year round.

I was impressed with BWE, the workshop was immaculate! The products for sale include, chopping boards (much cheaper than commercial products, John was keen to highlight), tea light holders which are very popular at events, stools and tables, the handmade stools seemed a real bargain at £49, each one unique and lovingly finished. BWE also have logs and kindling available to collect or for delivery, check out their website for more info and prices. I felt uplifted when I left the project, a small team of staff, a handful of volunteers and some very happy adults. A round of applause for BWE please!

Bolsover Woodlands Enterprise (BWE) is one of those places I love, described on their website as ‘a social enterprise that manages and protects woodlands in Derbyshire. All our team members are adults who have a learning disability.’ A short and simple description, yet the place really is so much more than that.

“We have a portable sawmill, so if wood is very large, we are able to mill it into planks on site.”

I was keen to understand how adults make their way to the project and how it was funded. “We’re linked with various local agencies but operate independently, people come down with their carers to see if the project is right for them. "We aim to self-generate much of the money needed to run the project and support the team members, as a Social Enterprise all the income we generate is for the benefit of the team members.

The notice prevents water being taken at St Helena’s flood gate (the start of the waterway) and has an impact on the use of the canal, basically preventing any use on the water. Rod was looking forward to getting the trip boats running again.

Rod explained how the funds will be used, "The £5.3m is fantastic news for the area. We will be restoring an extra half mile of canal up to the river Doe Lea. We will be building a new return lock with a 500m siphon pipe which will bring the water to the same level on both the east and west sides of the old Hartington railway bridge. We will also build two new bridges.

"We recognise that some sections of the current towpath in Chesterfield are narrow and have right angle bends which cause issues with users. Walkers and cyclists will be the first to benefit," says Rod.

"With extra funds, we could restore the section from Staveley basin to Spinkhill, but the issue is with maintenance once it’s operative. Who picks up the bill?" questions Rod. "Any new section needs to be subject to a managed agreement, the completion would produce a 7.5 mile stretch from Chesterfield to Renishaw but still wouldn’t connect to the basin at Chesterfield Waterside. "We work with landowners, authorities and agencies, and the support from councillors and the community has been fabulous, but we need to continue the drive."

hesterfield Canal Trust have recently received £5.3m of funding which comes as part of the Staveley town deal. I’m sitting with Rod Auton from the Canal Trust who’s quite excited to tell me about the developments that will result.

The trust will continue seeking out funds as things like the aqueduct will be expensive as there is no road access to the site and overhead power lines cross the site. “The first work people will see is drilling to add a new bridge across the Arkwright trail and work to move a vast pile of clay which has been gifted to the trust by Suon Ltd. It is currently at Foxlow to the north side of the basin, Rod was clearly very pleased with this gift… I must admit to not quite sharing the same excitement for what, to me, is a huge hill that needs to be moved!

As we met the canal had a ‘hands off flow’ notice which was coming to an end.

"We can start work on designs for a new aqueduct to run the canal over the Doe Lea River which will be a wonderful draw for the crowds, running for 32m and sitting at a height of 10m above the ground."

I’d just like to say a personal thanks to Rod and the team at the trust. I don’t own a boat or paddle the waters but I’m often cycling along the towpaths as part of a loop around Chesterfield and simply wouldn’t be able to do this without their hard work. Rod points out that plans have had to be reined in as rising costs mean the funds won’t go as far as originally thought.

The trust was formed in 1997 arising from the Chesterfield Canal Society formed in 1976 and our volunteer Work Party has worked in Derbyshire every weekend since 1988 plus many weekdays and can show 34 years of effort. "It shows commitment and a long-term future but it’s still difficult to guarantee plans," says Rod. "Work is often slow, we have a moveable rubber dam that inflates with water which allows us to work on 30m sections to identify the leaks at Renishaw and put a liner in the correct place, slow tiresome work."

"There is also £2.2m allocated for Staveley Waterside (aka Staveley Town Basin) secured by DCC.

"The towpath to Renishaw will be upgraded to a multiuser trail and then we are hoping to take this through the Norbriggs Cutting, which is presently a right of way but needs work. These changes will significantly extend the cycle network.

The Chesterfield Canal is 46 miles in total to the river Trent and there is about 8.5 still to be done, Rod is confident this will all be restored, the group's target year was 2027, but as they never know where funding will come from this is getting a bit close.

"I didn't scream, I laughed when we went down these huge inclines but that's because I trust her, she is a great driver. After we had been round a few times she said, 'right it's your turn now' and I took Prescilla down some inclines I didn't think I'd do, and I loved it," smiled Marcella.

"I went home (to France) for the first time in nearly three years, three weeks ago, for a long overdue catch-up with Helen. “The others had all been in bands before, all I’d done was acoustic gigs by myself, the first gigs were quite small which allowed me to develop confidence on stage. Now I enjoy being on stage, ask me to dance at a wedding and there’s no chance but stick a guitar in my hands and I’m ready to perform!” Describe your sound. It’s got elements of 60s rock, think The Beatles and The Who, but at the same token has a psychedelic 90s groove to it. A combination of the Stone Roses and the Verve. From their first gig to performing at Leeds Festival in five months, we catch up with local band LUNARCA. Introducing LUNARCA; a locally based Indie Rock four-piece band, inspired by the 60s their sound is raw and energetic, their influence of the era is showcased in their songs with Beatlesque harmonies and jangly, melodic guitars.

The band is made up of singer Connor Berry, guitarist Elliot Britton, bassist Jasper Elliott and drummer Tom Stafford. As well as the 60s, they also take inspiration from the 90s with bands such as the Stone Roses and Verve. Where did it start? “We all go to the same college,” says Connor. “I was in a rehearsal room in college one day when Elliot walked in, he heard I was a singer and asked if I wanted to help form a band. Jasper joined shortly after when we saw him perform at a gig, and Tom we found on social media. The name LUNARCA came randomly months prior to forming the band, I came up with it in case I ever joined a band."

“It was strange going from my bedroom to a stage, it was new to me,” explains Connor.

"We work together, I’ll bring a finished song to the rest of the lads on my acoustic guitar, and then they’ll pretty much just play it back on the spot, but add all sorts of different elements. And it’s the same with whoever brings a song to the table as we all write. It really is a massive team effort, we all have a vision of what we want a song to sound like but we don’t normally plan what we’re going to do, it just ‘LUNARCA’shappens.”

I’m constantly booking us for gigs, talking to people within the industry and getting our name out on social media, I seem to have become the band manager which is quite a fun role. Next year, we’re hoping to make an appearance at some festivals, YNOT is one of our goals and so is Tramlines as we would be representing Sheffield.

“There aren’t many music venues in Chesterfield unfortunately. We’ve played at The County Music Bar quite a few times and have always enjoyed gigging there, but Sheffield is notorious for its music scene, so we’re trying our best to make a name for ourselves there as we love it so much."

‘unbroken.solutions’ explores the impact and responses to the environmental damage from our electrical and electronic waste. The project explores responses from multiple perspectives. It covers countries where a repair culture still exists, to countries creating city-wide solutions, to communities and volunteer groups creating local responses and the independent repairers. Underpinning all of this are those who seek to change the laws and regulations to give us all the ‘right to Unbrokenrepair’.Solutions is the brain child of critically accliamed photographer Mark A Phillips. His photography is largely focussed on ‘constructive’ stories about people and groups taking action to address societal problems; with an emphasis on the environment and sustainability. His current projects focus on the importance of repair and reuse as a response to waste and creating a sustainable future. He originally studied engineering, has a PhD researching innovation and social ecosystems, developing multi-perspective approaches to understanding emerging and complex systems. That research now informs his photography projects. His work has been published online and in print in various major newspapers and magazines and shown at exhibitions in the UK, Europe and USA.

In the first set of actual examinations since 2019, students at Brookfield Community School have achieved impressive results in their GCSE examinations. Over 60% of students achieved a 'strong pass' (grade 5 or above) in both Maths and English, while almost 80% achieved a standard pass (grade 4 and above) in both. Results at Brookfield, which is part of Redhill Academy Trust, have improved significantly since 2019. The Attainment 8 measure, which shows the average grade every student received in all subjects, has increased to 5.4 (from 4.7 in 2019).

Local University Opens Its Doors To Breastfeeding Families!

The University of Derby in Chesterfield is opening their doors and offering a FREE friendly breastfeeding support group. The drop-in sessions will run from the 15 September on the first and third Thursday of the month, between 10:30am and 12pm at the Chesterfield, St Helena campus. Whether you are expecting a child, are new to parenting, or are further down your parenting journey - all are welcome! The group will be led by experienced breastfeeding supporters, who are trained and supervised by Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire. They will provide non-judgemental support and information for families attending the “It’sgroup.great that the Community Chesterfield Project has enabled us to work with the University of Derby in this way,” says Alexandra Dilkes from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire. “It’s a wonderful venue, centrally located and easy to get Freeto.” refreshments will be provided, as well as a selection of toys to entertain the little ones! Many of you may know that, thanks to the generosity of the local community contributing to the Justgiving page and the success of the Jubilee Event at Maggie May’s, the target amount of £5,000 was reached, meaning that we can begin the necessary talks with the council, play park manufacturers and most importantly apply for the other 90% needed through funding. As part of the application process, we, as a community need to provide evidence of support from local residents. Over the last two years, local volunteers from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire, known as Feeding Together Bolsover and Chesterfield, haven’t let the pandemic stop them supporting families. They have been providing remote support and running regular ‘Parent in the Park’ walks at Poolsbrook Country Park. The organisation will also be running sessions at Staveley Healthy Living Centre and Bolsover Children’s Centre. As well as regular social events, members of Derbyshire Peak Oddfellows can access financial benefits and welfare support, with a dedicated care helpline, citizens advice team, and a travel club. Oddfellows membership costs from £25 a year.

“We saw the effect spending less time in the company of others had on our members during the pandemic and we need to make sure that as we face another difficult time we stay in touch.”

Research undertaken by the Oddfellows showed that those aged 60-plus in the UK have on average four close friends, with three percent saying they don’t have any. Nine out of 10 (87 percent) agreed that friends improved the quality of their life.

Few singers can enjoy such a long career as Valerie Crick, who has marked her 51 years as a founder member of the Chesterfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society which was formed in 1971 at Central Methodist rehearsal rooms, Saltergate.

The Society had around 40 members back then and more recently gained a reputation for excellent productions of the Savoy Operas at The Pomegranate Theatre. Elizabeth Jepson, herself a member of the group for nearly 50 years said: "It has been a remarkable achievement to reach this landmark because many towns have lost their Gilbert and Sullivan Societies. For us still to be around is great, although it is getting harder each year to attract the audiences and to find new members."

Words & Images: Michael South Welcome back my fellow Spireites. The friendly games are done. The signings have been made and the squad has been assembled for the assault on the 2022/23 footballing season... So, what could possibly go wrong? Well nothing, for the first 27 minutes anyway. The opening game of the season was away at Dorking Wanderers and midway through the first half our new keeper Covolan was sent off for charging out of his area and lashing out at a defender after clearing the ball. So with ten men and no substitute keeper on the bench, up stepped Ollie Banks to don the keeper's jersey and swap midfield for the bloke between the posts. It was all going so well up until that point too as Asante became the first Spireite scorer of the new campaign after just 18 minutes. It got a bit more hopeful just before halftime when Dobra made it 2-0, so all looked back on track. But that all changed in the second half. Dorking, freshly promoted to the National League, clawed back 2 goals in 10 minutes, 67th and the 77th minute to level the game. Then to add to it all, on the 96th min, Horton was then sent off for time wasting during a throw-in. This was later rescinded however when CFC appealed the decision, claiming the second yellow card given to Horton was for mistaken identity. So that was something I guess. The game ended with a point a piece, at 2-2. So not the greatest start to a footballing season especially as the unexpected hunt was now on to sign another goalkeeper for the next fixture. After a short search though the club signed Fitzsimons as the new goalie. Next up came the first home tie of the season to Aldershot. This did go as planned and it ended

Next up came a short drive down the M1 to Nottingham for Notts County. This, like the Dorking game two weeks prior, ended 2-2. After being 2 goals up the Spireites seemingly switched off in the second half and conceded 2 goals within 4 minutes. No keeper was sent off though this time. But we still need to see our games out when ahead if we wanna dominate this league. At the time of writing, we've just played Barnet and not only did we smash them 3-1 at home but Tshimanga scored his first of the season fresh from the bench, newly signed Jesurun Uchegbulam made his professional debut for the Spireites from Matlock Town. But, most importantly… We ended the night firmly Top. Of. The. League!!! Plus, if you've noticed, all the goalscorers so far for Chesterfield have come from all positions, which is a huge positive for us. Cook has crafted an attack minded squad of players, like he said he would when he arrived. So, unlike last season, we aren't

The Spireites then played some of the best football I've seen at the club for many a year. Paul Cook has put together a fantastic squad. It really does look like they really do wanna play for Cookie and win the league outright. Well, accept for the keeper perhaps. I've not seen passing and movement for ages as good as what I saw that Tuesday night. And the goals...Outstanding!

Jeff King and Ollie Banks both got on the score sheet in the first half and for a while I heard the Kop sing "We are top of the league!" I really felt like we were back and heading in the right direction, all without Tshimanga, who was on the bench and not needed.

Before the game even started they were very vocal. The Welsh like to sing! Shame then they decided to throw a red smoke grenade on the pitch in front of their own keeper just as he arrived on the pitch at the goal in front of his travelling fans.

The season's only young. It's still in its short shorts, and we are bound to have our fair share of injuries as the games go by. No, he'll play his part and bag many more goals as the season unfolds, of that I am certain. So, to recap. We are still unbeaten and the Kop once again can proudly chant "We Are Top Of The League" at the time of writing.
