Intro

"Chesterfield is a fabulous place, full of great little businesses like this, it's my new favourite place!"

I didn't say this, but I overheard a customer chatting to Matt in Ginspired, just inside the Market Hall. We had a quick chat and she had travelled up from the South to see her parents that live on the western fringes of Sheffield. Bored of going to Bakewell each time she comes up she'd taken a trip into town, much to the consternation of her parents! The reality was she was having a great time. She was carrying several bags from local independent businesses and was full of the joys and experiences she'd had in town.

I was in town with Matt Pritchard from Defeye and we were really encouraged by what she said, we reminded Matt at Ginspired that it would be great if she had a map of local independent businesses. Luckily, he still had a few of the Unhampered maps left and handed one over. To check out the map use the QR code below.

Maybe we can take a lesson from this passing stranger and invest some time visiting the local independent businesses nearby and in town, personally I know we as a family will continue to do what we can.

Libby’s and The Café at Libby’s

After almost 20 years running Libby’s, one of Chesterfield’s gems, Libby Morris has handed over the reins of the business. Libby’s was one of the first businesses on Chatsworth Road to recognise the changes and give us something different, a quality business with a welcome as warm and friendly as you could ever wish for.

A couple of years ago Andy Crutchley took the bold step and started running the Cafe at Libby’s, he is now super excited that Libby has entrusted him to run the the gift and homeware shop as well!

“This is a major undertaking but you’ll be pleased to know there will be no major changes,” says Andy. “It’ll just be a few tweaks, the usual warm welcome will remain, along with our fabulous products and scrumptious, homemade food.”

“I, along with many others would like to thank Libby for all the endless hours she’s put into the business, her hard work, dedication, and her amazing creative eye and attention to detail, in creating such an iconic, independent, Chesterfield shop.”

“You can be sure we won’t let you down.”

We look forward to seeing you very soon, Andy & the team.

DRIFTING Chatsworth Country Fair's early morning balloon flight

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Andy Childs

This month's cover image comes from local photographer Andy Childs from Holymoorside. You might remember Andy? He helped out with the cover image for our Christmas edition back in December 2017 when we took our Christmas tree made of pallets and lit by Paperstarlights to Longshaw for a day out! Andy now works locally with an agency but sent in these superb shots of the balloons taking off from Chatsworth's grounds during the Country Fair in September.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we did and thanks to Andy for sending them in. You can find more of Andy's work at his website below. www.andychilds.co.uk

We chat with Sally from Feel Good Dog Training

The fear of dogs is real and many children and adults are scared of dogs.

Local dog trainer Sally Bawden, who specialises in working with families and schools to help children and dogs to live happily together, has overcome her own fear of dogs and is now helping others to do the same.

“It’s crazy that I now work with dogs! I remember vividly how stressful visiting a friend with a dog could be. I can still remember the feeling of fear with a lively Labrador running around freely when I was at a friend’s party. Luckily my fear subsided as I grew older, but this is not always the case.”

Sally has turned her fear of dogs into her passion and a career when she qualified as a Dog Trainer and set up her business Feel Good Dog Training in Holymoorside.

However, Sally wanted to specifically help families with children, so she joined Kids Around Dogs (KAD). “When I found out about the international organisation Kids Around Dogs, I knew this was the area of dog training I wanted to specialise in” Sally says, “I love working with families with the practical aspects they should be thinking about and the management tools to put in place with babies, young children and teenagers.” Skills such as how to play safely with dogs and how to read the subtle signs a dog can give when they need some space, such as turning their head away or yawning when not tired.

Sally explains that she has also seen firsthand the trauma caused when a family friend was bitten when visiting a friend’s house for a sleepover and saw the distressing fallout for all involved. The scars the girl was left with will always be there, physically and mentally.

One of the certifications Sally obtained by joining KAD was learning the successful protocol to overcome the fear of dogs in children. The fun 10-week program helps kids to understand dogs and see them as individuals with emotions; likes, dislikes, opinions and ideas, rather than a scary animal who will bite or jump up at them. What helps a lot by using the KAD protocol is the confidence the child will gain around dogs because of their new education on canine body language. Giving the child the knowledge and skills to know what to do if a dog should approach and changing their negative thoughts into positive ones. The protocol is child-led with emphasis on parents or carers being present and involved too so that the whole family learns new things about dogs. It uses positive reinforcement and rewards for completing tasks each week.

Sally has recently worked with a five year old girl whose mother saw the difference in her daughter from the start to the end of the protocol. 'My daughter was so scared of dogs it was becoming dangerous and stressful where she was hypervigilant. She would notice a dog in the distance, get sweaty palms and she would even run into the road. It was getting so stressful to even walk to school or the local park. After the protocol with Sally my daughter is now able to show interest in dogs, wave at dogs and even stroke dogs. It was pitched to my daughter’s age and Sally was very friendly.' Another parent commented that, 'It is nice not to have to worry, try to second guess what he will do when a dog is around and it has made life so much easier.'

Sally confirms, “This is what makes this work so rewarding and positive for me.”

For more information or an informal chat please contact Sally or visit her website and the Kids Around Dogs website.

COMPETITION

Christmas is approaching and Unhampered have put together a Christmas Competition where you can win a star prize of £150 or one of two runners up prizes of £50 to be spent with any independent business listed on Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk. The prize fund has been kindly sponsored by St. Modwen Homes, who are presently developing the site at Egstow Park in Clay Cross (see advert).

The competition is open to all and is easy to enter, all you'll need is a trip in to town and a bit of time for a wander round.

From the 1st November we're displaying eight stars in businesses across town, each star contains a letter, which when you have collected all eight, makes a Christmas themed word.

The stars include the Unhampered and St. Modwen logos just to ensure you'll know when you've found one!

Opposite is a map showing the location of each business where you'll find a star, please note that some will need you to visit when they are open, also we've not named the business so you'll have to take a browse.

Once you've found all the letters unscramble them to make a festive word and send it in to us here at Unhampered to be dropped in the hat.

To be in with a chance of picking up either prize:

• Email your answer to ayup@unhampered-chesterfield.co.uk

STAR PRIZE £150

• Or text your answer to 07764 801080

• Or complete the form below, and send to: Christmas Competition Unhampered West Studios Studio 2, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield S41 7LL.

Please ensure you get your entry to us by close of play Friday 9 December after which the three winners will be drawn at random.

A huge thanks to the team at St. Modwen Homes for sponsoring the prizes of £150 and two £50 Unhampered vouchers which can only be spent with any of the independent businesses listed on the Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk website.

The site contains over 220 of Chesterfield's independent businesses supplying everything from Buttons to Bikes, from Gin to Giraffes (wooden ones that is!) and from Prints to Pizzas!

Whilst you’re out and about, don’t forget to pop into the shops and businesses and do a bit of shopping.

We’d love to see photos of you out and about enjoying your day, perhaps pausing for a hot chocolate, stopping off for lunch at Pizza Pi or Odyssey – or buying your Christmas presents! And don't forget to tag #unhamperedchristmas.

Enjoy your day in town, and thank you for supporting our independent businesses.

On a sunny morning in midSeptember I clipped into my pedals and enjoyed a peaceful cycle across town, using dedicated cycle infrastructure from Queen Mary’s Road right out to the meeting point at the A61 interchange roundabout to the proposed Gateway @Peak.

I was here to take part in ‘Journey to Net Zero’ an initiative trialing two buses, one Hydrogen powered and one EV, a joint initiative between Peak Gateway Properties, Toyota, Air Products, Caetano, City Taxis and Chesterfield Borough Council, so it only seemed right that I cycle there! We were met at the A61 interchange roundabout, the consented access to the development. Much fun was had reversing out from a narrow trail after taking a wrong turn, but it got us all smiling and was a great ice breaker… easy for me though as I was the only one able to turn around!

The route through the estate site is really impressive, it opens out into a wide natural bowl, surrounded by greenery in every direction and very quiet, I’d never realised how the site was positioned over the hill to the east of the A61 so any traffic noise is lost entirely. I locked my bike up and walked the last few hundred metres to the building that was once the club house of Birchall Golf Course.

The site is owned by Birchall Properties and over the past years they have had to adapt and change as the business environment has struggled to work its way through BREXIT, COVID and the present cost of living crisis. A ‘challenge’ is an understatement.

Today things are looking good, exciting times ahead with new partners, Milligan, on board. Milligan are mixed use developers, specialists in developing iconic destinations and have for over 20 years, been using their skills to curate the right mix of uses for new destinations. Long term, this approach will serve the community and visitors in a sustainable way and this trial marks an important milestone for Gateway and the Peak District National Park.

Over the past 10 years areas of the reclaimed opencast Estate have been part of a nature recovery programme and, as a result, over 20 birds of interest migrate or reside here today. Other areas of the estate have been maintained to welcome the approved development with Biodiversity Net Gain at its heart. The Estate has outline planning permission for 2,000 hotel rooms, 250 lodges, and a range of leisure, education, and entertainment facilities many based around

outdoor activity. A number of reserved matters approvals have now been granted on the outline consent.

With the Gateway @Peak being so well connected to national road, rail and bus infrastructure it is intended to operate the PEAK Express as a car free way for tourists to experience the national park and surrounding areas.

Gateway @Peak will provide accommodation, parking (2800 spaces) and services for onward travel into the Peak District for walkers and cyclists using the PEAK Express tourist service. This will help mitigate the environmental impact of these journeys and help reduce traffic congestion.

Melanie Taylor, Director of Leasing and Commerce at Milligan, said; “Our vision is to create a sustainable hub for like-minded businesses and a basecamp for the exploration of the Peak District. This will be a world-class example of a sustainable tourism project.

“A gateway could provide information for visitors to book single or multi-day itineraries, explore the area using more sustainable, less polluting modes of transport and buy or hire outdoor activity equipment to try out new activities. The information available about the wider Park’s attractions will help spread the economic benefit of visitors beyond the area’s traditional ‘honeypots’.”

Back to the buses. Hydrogen is a zero emissions fuel and I learnt that Air Products use green energy in its production to create a clean fuel. Once we have locally produced hydrogen it will be a game changer.

I took a trip out to Hassop Station on both the EV and Hydrogen powered vehicles and couldn’t tell the difference, again I was surprised by how quickly we reached our destination using a carefully chosen route over to The Robin Hood and down through Baslow to Hassop.

With regards to timescales, facilitation works and ground investigations are underway and The Gateway @PEAK is presently scheduled to open for Autumn 2025 bringing with it up to 1,000 job opportunities and a total change in the way visitors can access the Peak District.

I can see this working. We take trips to the Peak District regularly and the ability to create rides, walks and days out around the routes taken from Gateway @Peak is an interesting one. I look forward to buying my first ticket.

Reader, Ian Walton, got in touch after being fascinated by the article about the autograph books donated to Ashgate Hospice.

Although he wasn't able to shed any light on those books he has shared with me a similar book, which belonged to his grandmother, Theresa Walton (née Summerscales). She was born on 16 January 1883 and died in her nineties.

The first entry in the album is 30 December 1901 and all subsequent entries went into the album over the next ten years, with the exception of one dated 1925.

We suspect these journals were common in the days before radio, TV and social media when people took the time to develop their artistic skills. The following pages show a few of the pages and the detail that went into the books.

I hope you enjoy them and a huge thanks to Ian for trusting me with the journal.

Pickleball

Ian Walton, the secretary of the Chesterfield Pickleball Club, introduces us to a new(ish), and rapidly growing sport!

Words: Ian Walton Image: Simon Paterson

When I set off for Canada on a family visit in 2019, little did I imagine that I’d return home hooked on a brilliant new sport – pickleball!

We go to Squamish, a small town just north of Vancouver, for several weeks each year to spend time with our grandchildren. While there, I like to take my mountain bike out on the superb trails in this beautiful area. But as well as cycling, I enjoy tennis and racket ball so whilst away I decided to look for somewhere in Squamish to play these sports. I made a few enquiries at the local Sports Centre and discovered that while there were tennis courts in Squamish, there was no club or organised play, so without a partner, I wasn’t going to get a game. They suggested that the Over 50s Centre might help. When I called there however I was told: ‘There’s no tennis here - but why don’t you try pickleball?’

‘Pickleball? What’s that? I’ve never heard of it.’

I quickly discovered that pickleball is a mixture of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s played with paddles (like large table tennis bats) and a hollow plastic ball with holes in it, on a badminton-sized court. It’s both an indoor and outdoor sport, and the net is similar to that for tennis but a little lower. A pickleball travels at about a third of the speed of a tennis ball, and this slower speed combined with an underhand serve and a smaller court makes the game easier to play than tennis, and more inclusive for younger and older players.

After one session I was hooked! I went straight out and bought a paddle and played pickleball a couple of times a week for the rest of my stay in Canada.

When I returned to the UK, I wanted to carry on playing so I started surfing the internet, which led to a whole host of information, notably at www.pickleballengland.org. It says that the game was invented in the USA in 1965, and it is now the fastest growing sport over there with about 3.3 million players. It started to take off in the UK in 2010, mainly in the south, but it is now spreading to other regions. I also learned that there was a group playing at the Arc Leisure Centre in Matlock so I joined them on Friday afternoons.

I then decided to try and set up a group in Chesterfield. I invested in four paddles, a net and some balls and began to involve friends who were tennis and racket ball players. Very quickly there was sufficient interest to book a badminton court at Queen's Park Leisure Centre for our first game in Chesterfield, back in September 2019.

Because the game proved so popular in Chesterfield we formed a properlyconstituted club in late 2020. Chesterfield Borough Council were very supportive when approached to help provide facilities and agreed to allow us to play on the outdoor tennis court at Eastwood Park, Hasland. This gave a huge boost to the game in Chesterfield.

Page 42 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
Sport

Councillor Jill Manion-Brunt came to try pickleball and commented “I love it! This is just the thing Chesterfield needs to encourage more people of all ages to become active.”

With both indoor and outside courts and a newly formed club we will soon be in a position to apply for funding to buy equipment and further expand and promote the game. And who knows, maybe pickleball will one day be as popular here as other, better known sports.

In October 2020, Chesterfield Borough Council marked out four pickleball courts at Eastwood Park. This was a life saver for the club, as indoor play had been suspended because of the covid pandemic and it enabled play to continue when outside

Page 43

activities were permitted again. In March 2021 the Council awarded the club a grant towards additional equipment so that we could use all four courts at Hasland.

In late 2021 Queen's Park opened up again and we started playing indoors on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The club committee realised that the club had a limited appeal when we could only offer daytime facilities and so in September 2021 we decided to look for an indoor evening venue. The sports hall at Chesterfield College was available and we booked to play on Monday evenings from 7:15pm until 8:45pm. This was a major step forward in the club’s development and membership rose dramatically, to the point where we took on another night, Wednesday, at the college. At this point in time, we had over fifty members and had to halt recruitment.

Sessions take place as below.

The college isn’t available for hire from Easter to October and so in early 2022 we started looking for somewhere else for evening play during the summer. We tried three different schools in the Chesterfield area, finally settling for Whittington Green School, where we play on Tuesdays and Fridays. We returned to Chesterfield College on 28th September and will offer evening play on four nights a week during the winter, as well as our regular indoor and outdoor sessions during the daytime and so we are looking for new members again!

Laterlivingnow!

Sue Wilmot Rowe joins the local team.

Laterlivingnow! – the only independent Equity Release specialist company based in Chesterfield and Derbyshire, have appointed Sue Wilmot Rowe as their 4th ‘Laterliving Planner’, at a time when they are experiencing unseasonably high demand for advice from homeowners over 55.

On joining Laterlivingnow! Sue said; “I believe with a passion, that those who have worked hard for much of their lives, raising families and paying vast sums in tax, deserve much better than a meagre retirement. Later life is to be enjoyed, not worried over, so I feel very privileged to be able to help our clients live better and more comfortable lives by releasing part of the value tied-up in their homes.”

retirement in particular finding that their pension income (much of which can often be fixed) no longer covers the necessities, let alone the niceties.

Laterlivingnow! - Chesterfield and Derbyshire’s leading Equity Release specialist is expecting an even busier time ahead, as the UK Energy Price Cap rises 80% in October, with the prospect of energy bills hitting £3,549 or higher for millions of households.

The increasingly popular drawdown style of Lifetime Mortgage, established by taking a modest £10,000 minimum sum initially, can allow homeowners over 55 to take much smaller regular sums, from as little as £500 a time in some cases. This way of taking some of the value locked-up in property, may be particularly well-suited for anyone needing a bit more ‘income’ to meet the bills and live free from worry.

Laterlivingnow! is well placed to support many more clients through this turbulent, uncertain time, whilst pointing out that Equity Release may not be suited to everyone. In offering homeowners over 55 a free initial consultation, the company’s advisers can help people to understand their options, and together explore possible alternatives, such as means-tested benefits, before making recommendations.

Simon Chalk commented;

“The Equity Release market has grown enormously since the pandemic, with many inexperienced advisers suddenly claiming to be ‘specialists.’ People regularly tell us that they feel confused by guidance on the internet, hate being sold something that might be wrong for them, and sometimes just don’t know where to turn for experienced, independent advice.

The Equity Release market can usually rely on the summer months being a fairly steady, relatively quiet time. Not so this year, with enquiries at Laterlivingnow! up 22% over the corresponding period in 2021. The soaring cost of living is having a real impact on many people, with those in

We can usually work out in under an hour, whether releasing equity is worth considering, or whether it’s simply not right for someone – all within a free initial consultation by home visit, phone, or videocall such as Zoom, Teams, or WhatsApp. Our small team of four advisers are highly skilled, well qualified and have years of experience as advisors on Equity Release, so are well placed to help homeowners explore their options."

New Chairman Looks to the Future at Chesterfield CC

Aformer player with strong links to the golden days of Chesterfield cricket is hoping to lead the Queen's Park club into another successful era. Nigel Mallender has just stepped into the role of Chairman and he believes many of the foundations for what he wants the club to achieve are already in place.

The 45-year-old is looking to lead an inclusive club at the heart of the community while achieving success on the field. He said: "Last year we reorganised the committee so everyone now has a defined role and that is working well. Our bar is doing well, we are gaining traction with the community and building relationships with the likes of the local Running Club.

"We have a good relationship with Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Cricket Club and are grateful for their invaluable help and support." Mallender added: "We have around 100 children on Wednesday evenings for junior training and it’s fantastic to see so many youngsters enjoying themselves playing cricket at Queen’s Park. We’ve also recently had our Clubmark accreditation renewed following much hard work led by Club Welfare Officer, Julie Franks. Clubmark confirms we are well-run, sustainable and provide the right environment for our members.”

On the field, Chesterfield have had a difficult time in the last couple of years. They were relegated from the Premier Division of the Derbyshire County League last season and are mid-table in Division One this term. But Mallender is upbeat about playing prospects. "We've got a good, young squad under a new captain in Harry Wilmott," he said. "With two or three key new signings over the winter, I'm confident for the next season."

Yorkshire-born Mallender first visited Chesterfield as a child to see his uncle Clive Baxter. "He was Captain of the first team and Chairman, so there is a strong pull there for me to take the role," he said.

One of Baxter's closest friends was Jim Brailsford, another former Captain and Chairman and a legendary figure in the Club's history. Mallender remembers him fondly as "Uncle Jim".

Mallender, has played in the first team, captained the Seconds and development team, coached juniors, been involved in sponsorship and fund-

raising and served on the committee. He also worked closely with former Chairman Mike Taylor, another huge figure in the Club's history until his death last year. He recalls going to see Taylor during the later stages of his illness. "Mike said to me: 'You are going to get involved again, aren't you' and I promised him I would." Taylor was succeeded by John Windle, who stepped down recently. His spell at the helm involved all the problems of the pandemic and Mallender said: "We have to be grateful to John for doing the role at such a difficult time."

Mallender says people at the club have encouraged him to step up and he feels the time is right. Mallender aims to follow Taylor's lead, saying: "He was an outstanding person who worked so hard for our club, we all still miss him greatly. You don’t succeed someone like that but I’m proud to follow Mike. "It’s a real honour to be entrusted with the role of Chairman of this historic club and I’ll give it my all.” He believes that all local cricket clubs rely on a band of volunteers to help run them. But he points out that the size and stature of the Chesterfield Club, particularly with Queen's Park staging Derbyshire matches, mean it needs more helpers than many other clubs. He is therefore urging anyone interested in getting involved in any way or supporting the club as a sponsor partner to get in touch via the contact details on the Club's website - chesterfield.playcricket.com

Any newcomers can be sure the new Chairman is willing to lead by example. Earlier this summer he received a phone call on a Friday night telling him the Seconds were a player short for the following day so he dug out his kit to ensure the side had a full complement!

Goal Attack

Brookfield’s Sixth Form netball team are the new U19 North East Derbyshire Netball Champions.

Early in September, Henry Franshawe School hosted the U19 netball competition. Impressively, the Brookfield team - comprising Year 13 students and a large number of Year 12s who had only just started their post-16 studies - hadn’t managed to squeeze in a practice. PE teacher and netball coach Mrs Cooper commented: “I can’t therefore take much credit for the success! We knew rivals Tupton Hall and Dronfield HF had a few key players so were aware we were in for a few tough games.” In a close-fought first game against Dronfield, the Brookfield team showed some real determination and managed to convert some turn over ball in the last third to secure victory. The second game against Tupton was a more comfortable win: they had some great individual players but the connections that the Brookfield team had on court were superior and allowed us to dominate the game. All the girls played fantastically well, particularly as at times – lacking players in defensive roles - they played out of their normal positions. As a result, the win felt even more deserved.

The atmosphere was great and it was lovely to see - especially after the break due to the pandemic - so many Sixth Form girls involved in a local competitive tournament.

For the Year 13 team members, this will have been their last tournament; however, we are hoping to play a ‘friendly game’ prior to Christmas and there has been talk of a game against staff!

Wonder-walkers

September ended with a fantastic sponsored walk in aid of Ashgate Hospice. The whole school community took part, students walking in mixedage house groups with Years 12 and 13 walking last to support younger students along the way. Staff accompanied each group, with others marshalling the route to ensure a safe and fun end to the first month of the new school year. The route took walkers from school on a circuit via Linacre Reservoir and Ashgate.

As we go to press, more than £8000 has been pledged on the Just Giving page for the event... more than double the target.

The Bells Tolled

Across Derbyshire church bells rung out for the late Queen and new King. If you heard bells ringing in your town or village between the announcement of Her Majesty's death and the state funeral it may have sounded a bit different because bells were rung muffled or single bells tolled.

A muffle is a leather cap which goes onto a bell's clapper. When a monarch dies they are used to 'deeply muffle' the bells, which makes them ring mournfully softly with the largest bell solemnly tolling over them.

Even Big Ben's bong was softened with a muffle on its strike hammer.

For the proclamation of King Charles III no muffles were used as bells rang out in celebration.

Being a bell ringer is a fun activity, but at a time of national importance it is a real privilege and honour, none more so than to ring for royal occasions.

In fact hundreds of Derbyshire bell ringers of all ages rang in over 75 different places in Derbyshire, completing about 200 special pieces of bell ringing to remember the late Queen or celebratethe new King.

One of the ringers, Ian Johnston, had had a 47 year gap from ringing, but came back to ably ring for the King's accession and even tolled the tenor at Alfreton for the Queen's funeral!

Some single bells were tolled exactly 96 times, one for each year of the Queen's life.

Most of the ringing lasted up to an hour, but the full peal rung on Derby Cathedral's 10 bells took 3 hours 21 minutes to ring. It was rung at 5pm on the day of the funeral and was broadcast live using the Cathedral's Peregrine webcam.

You will find videos of special ringing from around Derbyshire on our Facebook page, where you can also find out more about being a ringer and contact us if you are interested in giving it a try.

Open Doors at CFC

Every September thousands of volunteers across England organise Heritage Open Days to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences, all of which are free to explore. The ten days of 2022 Heritage Open Days has just ended with several new venues opening their doors for the first time.

Chesterfield FC took part and arranged four tours that welcomed visitors from near and far, ranging from people that lived a few streets away to visitors from hundreds of miles away and even from other countries.

Club Secretary Peter Whiteley (pictured far right) explained, "We felt it was vital that the football club participated in this national (and international) event as a way of welcoming a wider audience to understand the club's ambitions. We want to be successful on the pitch but we also want give as many people as possible a chance to recognise our ambition to become firmly embedded in the community by offering a huge range of non-football activities."

Robinson Bowls Doubles Trophy Winners

It was success for Pete Sanderson and Chris Dart, winners of the annual Robinson Bowls Doubles Trophy, a competition which is organised each year by Robinson Bowls Club at Walton Dam. This popular event is traditionally held on Chairman’s Day and is a round-robin event which this year paired experienced league players with newer members to give everyone a fair chance. The event this year was held at Walton Dam on Sunday 28 August 2022.

AUTUMN GARDENING TIPS

If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.

Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seed-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out wormcasts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.

Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.

Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost.

Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.

If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.

If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with overwintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more.

Record Breakers

Words & Images: Michael South

Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Firstly, absolute respect to ALL in the ground during the minute's silence remembering Queen Elizabeth II's sad passing. You could have heard a pin drop!

So what's what, in CFC land?

At the time of writing we have just suffered our first league defeat at home against Maidenhead Utd and it was just a bad day at the office for me. All teams have them, but let's not get bogged down.

I want to highlight the fantastic run of form and team spirit that we have witnessed from the squad.

The Southend Utd game is a good example of my case in point. When they paid us a visit on the evening of 13th September it took just 19 minutes to take the lead with Clarke's opening goal. But by half time we were 2-1 down and Banks had been sent off due to a "bad tackle" (later rescinded after the Spireites won their appeal). Not so long ago that would have been that and we'd have come back out and played the second half-heartedly. But we didn't. We fought back. All due to whatever Cook said in the dressing room. It clearly had a profound impact on the squad when they returned to the field, because Quigley stormed through the Southend defence then slotted the ball calmly home past the keeper to bag the equaliser. Not so long ago we'd have probably settled for the draw, for the single point at that stage, if not have conceded a goal (or two) to lose all three points in added time. But no, not anymore. Because next stepped up Jeff King. Who, in the 69th minute, confidently and rather impressively rocketed the ball into the net from his left boot, from over 20

odd yards out, to secure all 3 points and keep us at the top of the league. What a noise THAT made round the stadium! And that right there is my point. The whole mentality has changed and has stayed consistent since the start of this season, now Cook has shaped his squad. Players want to and WILL play for the badge. It gets better too. So much so, Cookie won the Vanarama's manager of the month award (some fans believe that this is an Omen, but we shall see) AND the club has also broken a long standing club record for starting a season and remaining unbeaten at the tenth game mark. Held since 1938. Excellent!

In other news…Tshimanga.

I mentioned last month how we can play and more importantly win without him in the squad given his injury and his slow rehabilitation back to the team. I questioned the need for the club to depend on him, like the season before, to score goals. And just as I'd submitted the article to print, he was linked with an imminent big transfer move to Birmingham City up in the Championship. Luckily (for us) it fell through but it did make me question if he'd be missed. The short answer is YES, but we’d survive without him in my opinion. Debate amongst yourselves here. But since being subbed on and scoring in both the Southend game and again against Maidstone Utd he still is lethal when needed. So to return to the aforementioned mentality of the squad for a moment, Oldaker then finished the comeback in the dying minutes of the Maidstone game to make it 2-1 to the Spireites. This made him the 12th CFC player to score for the club this season. So, in the words of Roy

Castle, God rest his soul, and in keeping with the record breaking theme "Dedication's what you need!" Which leads me perfectly into our newest signing…Uchegbulam.

Fresh from Matlock Town FC who are a few leagues below Chesterfield, he has shown real class and determination to get into this team. After just a few games in, the young lad has scored his first professional goal against Yeovil Town. And it came at the right time. It was another comeback goal to earn the Spireites a point away from home. I would happily bet all the money I have currently in the bank, all £23.65 of it, on him banging in many more this season!

But to finish here we need to remember how far we’ve come and that we have broken our own club record for starting the season unbeaten in the past 10 games. Best in the club's history! Remember that if you start to feel disappointed on reflection, after a few beers. Anyway, raise a glass to Paul Cook and the boys. I for one am glad he's back, as I’m sure you are!

Simple

Every time I see one of these signs it makes me smile. They're placed on many of the posts around the Peak District.

A simple suggestion and one that we often forget. I ride my bike on trails across the Peak District and always try to say 'hi' and give people a smile as I pass. I'm pleased to say that most of the time it's reciprocated.

Apparently (thanks internet) it takes 43 muscles to frown, and only 17 muscles to smile, so it's even taking less energy. Anyway, this sign makes me smile and if you see me, give me a smile back.
